Washington Commanders mock draft strategy takes center stage as the team debates cornerback vs receiver in the first round, weighing the defensive upside of Mansoor Delane against the offensive firepower of Carnell Tate. With Adam Peters and David Blough shaping the roster, the trade back with the Cincinnati Bengals gets dissected, revealing how KC Concepcion’s slot versatility could elevate Ben Johnson-inspired schemes, and how additions like Harold Perkins Jr. and Roman Hemby strengthen depth across linebacker and running back.
Which approach gives Commanders the best shot at immediate impact, and how does draft board scarcity influence the position picked first? See how the balance between defensive lockdown and offensive matchup nightmares could reshape the Commanders’ future. Is selecting a cornerback at 10 smarter than chasing the next star receiver? Drop your thoughts in the comments and share which mock class wins out in your eyes.

What if, instead of going receiver in this week's mock draft,
we went corner back in the first round.
You are Lockdown commanders.
Your daily podcast on the Washington commanders.
Part of the Lockdown podcast network.
Your team every day.
Welcome inside today's episode of Lockdown commanders.
I am your host, your guy on the ground, David Harrison.
And on today's episode, we're going to run it back.
A double dose of mock drafts for you this week.
But we're taking it back to the future with this one.
And seeing what the class might look like.
If we go corner back in the first round.
Instead of receiver like we did already.
All of that coming up on today's episode.
As is our way during the off season.
We drop a new and a fresh mock draft every single Monday to start every single week.
And we try to take a what if look at what the commanders might do in April based on the latest information.
Listen, I'm not trying to tell you what the commanders are going to do at the end of April in mid marks.
There's too much that can still happen.
There are too many variables.
All those things.
What I'm interested in is kind of a choose your path adventure.
Let's take this path and let's see where this thing takes us sometimes.
It takes us into a beautiful clearing with great scenery.
We're just comfortable and warm and everybody's happy sometimes.
It takes us deep in the woods and everybody is terrified and scared.
We say, OK, let's never go back down that path.
Again, yesterday the path that we took her to start this week.
The path that we took was to trade back to number 10.
We trade it back as far as 16 didn't like that.
That's a path that we're going to board off.
Never going to go down that path again.
15 was OK.
But I think somewhere before 15 is really the best place to go this time around.
We trade it back to number 10.
We use all the new information.
Adafee.
Oh, wait.
Leo Chanel.
Rashad White.
All of these new guys that are joining the Washington commanders roster.
We traded back with the Cincinnati Bengals at number 10 to see if we could fill some more holes on the Washington commanders 2026 roster.
And what we did is we end up going with White receiver.
Carnell Tate.
Now we let the board kind of decide that a little bit for us.
So we're going to go back and reset it a little bit.
And so it took a little bit of work as I had to get the simulator to give me the same type of results.
And of course those things aren't always the most friendly when you're trying to dictate the results.
Of course, but eventually we got there.
So we're going back for number seven to number 10 with the Cincinnati Bengals.
And instead of going Carnell Tate at White receiver, we were left with cornerback man sword, the lane out of LSU.
And that's the route we took the rest of the class then shook out like this.
And the second round pick number 41.
Part of that trade with the Bengals will get to here in just a second.
We end up with White receiver KC conception on out of Texas A&M fifth round.
We went with Jagger Burton center out of Kentucky six round two picks there Harold Perkins Jr.
Linebacker out of LSU was one of them Robert Spears Jennings safety out of Oklahoma was the second.
And in the seventh round here, we really pivoted.
We went Roman Embi running back out of Indiana.
So that is how our second version of this similar mock draft again.
The replacing or filling in the plate the spots with the new players added by the wash smears during free agency.
And then going through the mock draft to see what else we could fill out.
So let's refresh this just a little bit because we didn't go all the way back and redo the trade or just pick it number seven.
We kept the trade in place.
The Cincinnati Bengals receive number seven and number 71 from the Washington commanders who we are representing in this mock draft.
That's the wash smears first rounder and third rounder.
And in exchange, the Washington commanders move back three spots to pick number 10, but move up 30 spots from the third round pick number 71.
To the second round pick number 41.
And just for everybody wondering out there, it does match the rich hill draft valued charts for trades.
I don't go too crazy.
I don't charge to high taxes. I don't do all the what ifs.
I just stick to the point charts.
So so just so you're aware of the criteria here.
It fits the point charts.
The Bengals do pay a little bit of attacks.
We never go above say like 15 points.
And even then it's kind of stretching.
I think it was like a three point tax quote unquote to jump higher into the first round that they did before they take an offensive tackle.
And then the Saints and she used to get their crack at it and they go out there.
I think the Saints end up taking car and elitates this time.
But we end up with Mansor to Lane.
And so we get that second rounder now that big gap from second round to fifth round still large still looms large.
But we get Mansor to Lane here.
I know some of you in the comments, some of the insiders, some of the all access every day or club members who have reached out to me to talk about this mock draft.
They like car and I'll tell you everybody sees the value in car and I'll tell you like that.
But they wanted more defense.
They just felt like this team needed more defense, especially that cornerback position after the wash compares already with Mikey Sainter still coming in at 5859.
Go out there and add Amique Roberts in a veteran who's about 5859 probably best in the slot though he can do a little bit of everything.
So here we go after that's a little bit taller, a little bit longer, a little bit more prototypical type of cornerback build six foot tall, 191 pound cornerback out of LSU.
Pro football folks is number two rated cornerback and pastor rating allowed in the 2025 college football season.
He's got the technicality. He's got the football IQ is out for four speed.
Not the most athletic cornerback in this year's class.
And I think that's kind of where some people maybe pull away from Mansor to Lane.
Just a little bit and talk about I've seen some some chatter or received some questions as well.
From all all access members of the every day or club about the potential of moving back to say the middle.
Of the first round back to that area we didn't really want to go and maybe targeting a more athletic cornerback like a German McCoy.
Or something like that and I've been saying and I'll continue saying it like the workouts the medicals on him are going to be the real hang up for me.
And any mock drop getting him, but if you give Doronte Jones Mansor to Lane, what you give him is you give him a guy that you can run those simulated pressures with you can bring pressure.
You can do these things you can put Mansor to Lane in a man match situation and you can feel confident even as a rookie.
And he's going to have his bumps. He's going to have his growing pains.
Of course, but you can put him opposite of Trey Amos on the other side coming into his second year with some lessons learned a little bit of tutelage under William Gay, who has been advanced to the corner backs coach for the wash commanders this season.
And Doronte Jones, of course, is a back end secondary guy by nature.
And you can help Mikey Sainter still in the slot because that pressure that added pressure from a Daffy O way coming in and some of these other guys.
And the improved what we hope to see anyways improves scheme that gets some more freed up with that pressure will make it easier for those corner backs in the slot and on the outside of play more aggressively.
If you caught the Logan Paulson episode that we dropped on Monday nights, we talked about that a little bit about the is there level concern from a former player from a guy who knows more than I certainly do about watching tape and breaking down these players.
About the double dipping with the smaller stature cornerbacks and he said, listen, at the end of the day.
If the washing manners and get pressure up front and I'm paraphrasing here, make sure you go back and check out Logan's full comments.
But basically if the wash manners and get pressure up front, it's going to allow even a smaller cornerback to be able to jump on the ball, jump around, make a play.
Be aggressive, which is what a meek Roberts and likes to do with what Mikey Sanders likes to do.
It's what traamist did so well in college. It's when these guys have to back off to provide top coverage because they know that guys can get into their full routes.
It's when guys have to be concerned with, you know, this is going to have five seconds to run all over the field, things like that where the size of differentials really start to kind of show up.
So really interesting thoughts from Logan there and I think that matches, however, we both also acknowledge like.
When you see a six foot tall dude or even even higher on the draft board, you do get a little bit of perked up perked up about that guy and you do have the interest in adding him there.
So for this mock draft iteration, we go man sort of laying here, which means that going cornerback instead of receiver number 10 meant at the top of the top defensive rookie was secured right away, but we still need to add depth and competition for David blouse receiver room coming up next.
Unlike our last version, we ended up with plenty of options to do just that that's coming up next on today's episode of locks on commanders part of the locks on podcast network your team every day.

You get add free versions of these shows and you get your first month free again with the promo code March locked on commanders out supercast calm to check all of that out today going corner back at number 10 instead of receiver means that we still have a need at the receiver position and fortunately unlike our last version when we needed that corner and pickings were a little slim now we still came away with Chris Johnson who I like a lot so I don't want to make it sound like we just kind of had to settle with the bottom of the barrel type of thing but at the receiver position we did have plenty more.
We did have plenty more options with this second pick that we made here in this mock draft but we end up coming away with one of the best separators in this years NFL draft class Casey conception wide receiver.
At a Texas A&M six foot tall closer to 200 pounds elite stop and start quickness is what a lot of scouting reports say about this young fellow yards after catchability is off the charts and when David blow took over this offense we got the up to coordinator job we immediately started talking about.
What are some of the things we expect from his scheme we expect a little bit of Ben Johnson and the more we learn more we talk to people I mean Chica Conquo and his introductory press conference flat out told us that they showed him some tape of some Ben Johnson concepts that they're going to be running a Washington so the more we learn about it the more Ben Johnson ask it looks like it's going to become certainly David blows going to have his wrinkle and all that stuff into it but it's going to be very Ben Johnson centric right and what is Ben Johnson's offense.
Ben Johnson's offense lean on it's not that X receiver that outside that you know left side outside receiver that gets the monster majority of the target so it's actually the slot and specifically it's a power slide it's not your shorts you know super twitched up.
The type of sides a guy who can win with size sometimes you win with quickness and other times and really is a match up nightmare for opposing defense as you put a linebacker on him who's not fast enough he's going to get towards you put a safety on him who's not big enough same thing you put a slot corner on him who's not big enough.
Same thing is going to get bodied out and get posted out kc consumption on could become that slot weapon now the good thing about kc is he can also play outside I would say he's definitely strongest inside.
But he can play outside which means we can still see the washmairs move Terry McClaren inside you see them both kind of start off in one alignment move into a different alignment so on so forth and David blow can give the illusion of complexity moving guys all around but in reality it's the same place.
You can literally run the same three plays one time Terry McClaren is your is your ex diami brown is your z kc consumption is in the slot the next time you go out there and run it you put kc consumption on the right you put Terry McClaren inside you put loot McCaffer in the slot the next time you do it you put the army brown on the right you put kc consumption on the left you put Terry McClaren in the slot you can literally run the same play all three of those times with different personnel different matchups and the defense has got to fit fit and meet each and every single one.
So while it doesn't give you that elites or that top shelf number two on the outside like carnell tape necessarily did for the washing manners it does give you another option of that slot and again like we said if David blouse offense is going to be similar to Ben Johnson's it's that slot receiver that is actually going to come away with the majority of the targets in this offense so having a young guy like kc in there who can do that can also rotate out with Terry so Terry can get his quote
to say nine you can do that but also kc next year maybe hopefully can take that next step potentially become the top receiver in the room and you know we have these number one receiver conversations all that I'm going to you start using the phrase top receiver because the top receiver could be left right slot I don't really care where he lines up who is your best receiver kc consumption certainly demonstrates the potential to be that guy now maybe you don't like kc consumption as much as some people do I was certainly surprised to see him there at 41 I am.
Anticipate at least one comment or one text says hey sorry dude I don't see him being there well tell PFF because you know what PFF had him there at number 41 so we took him and with the news of the Miami dolphins are training Jalen waddle to the never Broncos 30 to the overall pick that that definitely makes it a little bit less like the kc conception is going to be there 41 as well I agree however also available at number 41 when we got here Chris Bell Jeremy Bernard and Chris Brazl were also all available so there are certainly options.
For the Washington commanders in the receiver room and if you go back to yesterday you had the Angelo Ponds and yeah Chris Johnson that was basically it at pick number 41 in this scenario so again you like both those guys for different reasons but not as much versatility with that second pick but here receiver I mean I imagine there's going to be someone in the comments who likes each and every one of these receivers for different reasons they can see that fit for David Blow and certainly I think the David Blow can make any of these guys work if Adam Peters gave him to him.
So again a lot of options here so maybe that's part of the equation when we get to the part of the conversation of talking about which approach was the better approach between these two that certainly has to come up in the equation is what is the likelihood of the talent stock left when you get to that second round if you go one position over the other in the first round like we did in the last episode and in this episode let's move on now let's move 106 picks later all the way to pick number 147 in the first
round in the fifth round the only pick that is the same in both mock dress Jagger Burton Center out of Kentucky I love this dude listen there are some guys that are better out there Jake Slotter out of Florida comes the mind Sam Hack that Kansas state comes the mind right there are certainly some other prospects that that seem to have that higher Florida starts and perhaps perhaps a higher ceiling but honestly I think Jager Burton Jager Burton his ceiling might be as high as any of those other guys just his floor maybe is coming in a little bit smaller but it's not
in the fifth round pick 147 man if you can get Jagger Burton on this team I am all about it we're not going to dive too much into him just because we did dive deeper into him on yesterday's episode but you know second level type of guy lateral movement type of guy absolutely love what he brings as a prospect again he's a fifth rounder so let's not get crazy here but got a future all pro right but he certainly has a lot of upside going to the sixth round we have two picks here Harold Perkins Jr. linebacker out of LSU is where we go with the first pick a little bit of a reach in some boards.
All kinds of things but the way the board stacked out the players who were available at this point I felt comfortable taking Perkins is that a little bit of a tweener tag right in every day is those we've been through here if you've been here for multiple episodes you've heard me kind of had this conversation about tweeners and today's NFL we love versatility the dark side of versatility is a tweener and tweener is someone who does multiple things good doesn't really do anything great whereas versatility a versatile player does something great but then does other things well as well.
Harold Perkins is definitely looked at as more of a tweener by a lot of people then just simply being versatile but that's where Doronte Jones can come in and again the fact that you're going to have him in depth there with Jordan McGee and some of these other guys in front of them gives you time to work on him just like safety Robert Spears Jennings coming at Oklahoma actually I know for a fact this is at least his second time landing on one of our mock drafts here is that tons of range 4 3 240 at 6 1 over 215 pounds basically you're looking at that
in the safety position but also if Juan Martin is going to get more box reps like I expect him to under Doronte Jones it gives you another young guy back there along with Jeremy Reeves and some of these other safeties that the Washington Bears have to try to patrol that part of the field will Harris is over there as well with Nick Cross coming in to be more of a box safety I believe in the Doronte Jones defense and then finally I go into the seventh round this is where we went kind of really different seventh round last draft we went edge here to pick 223 we go Roman Hempi running back out of Indiana 6 foot 222
7 pounds very high IQs very he's known very well for his intellect his ability to play smart over 1200 screaming yards in 2025 for the national champions he's a blitz pick up guy he is a receiving guy he's got smooth hands he's at one cut vision he basically fits the mold of what the Washington commanders have been bringing in this off season they're free agents and Rashad white Jerome Ford and bringing back Jeremy McNichols like basically Roman Hempi is your younger version of those guys on paper obviously what it turns out to be
what it turns into and all those things and it gives you know they're back to bring into training camp it would be five guys to come in you'd have five running backs if you're the watch commands between contracts and draft picks you would have five guys in there make the running back competition really really interesting so our final 2026 draft class this version of it man sort of lane in the first round Casey conception in the second Jagger Jagger Burton in the fifth round Harold Perkins Jr. and Robert Spears Jennings in the sixth Roman Hempi in the seventh we're a still
with our undrafted free agents I don't have them listed right in front of me but Dominic Zavada kicker out of Michigan and running or a tight end out of Indiana another national champion Riley Noah Kowski to come in and be the John Bates in training coming up next we had our first class of the week now we have our second so which one is better we'll answer that coming up on today's episode of Lockdown commanders part of the Lockdown podcast network your team every day and today's episode of

well where that come from Arby's we have the meat and participating Arby's for a limited time
thank you again for making locks on commanders your first listen of the day two classes for you to digest
this week and we after we decide after we decided to do our best Marty McFly impression if you don't

already lost the good news is host can't win the merch right the host can't win the merch we can only win
bragging rights so jump in the pool let me know who you think is going to win each tournament or
whichever tournament you decide to sign up for so we have two classes here that we did to start the
week here we got Mach number one and Mach number two and Mach number one and two we traded back
with the Cincinnati Bengals move back to spot number 10 end up getting the 41st overall pick
in the NFL draft as well in the second round but we did have to give up our third round pick
to do so we came up with two somewhat similar in spots but also very different classes
in the end with the first pick pick number 10 first time we went around we went with carnell
tape wide receiver out of Ohio state man sort of lane was not available in the second iteration
carnell tape came off the board before number 10 and man sort of lane was the guy available
so we obviously went there carnell tape the technician wide receiver who makes the quarterback's
life a little bit easier the lane is the potential future lockdown corner who makes life hard for
the opposing quarterback so obviously quarterback impact is a big deal now in the second round pick
number 41 we just swapped it in the first version we took our corner back in the second round
Chris Johnson in the second version we took our wide receiver and second round Casey conception
on again with plenty of other options as some of you might like better available and on the board
as well in both Mox we went after the passing game again Johnson appear boundary project so not
as confident with him as a day one starter if you have to take him there Casey consumption on he's
going to be a contributor from day one but he's a contributor as part of the offense not in a
solidified single point of failure type of position in the fifth round pick number 147 we went
with the same dude Jagger Burton in the first one Jagger Burton in the second one Jagger Burton
or bus as far as I'm concerned in mid March for the NFL draft at the end of April we'll see if he
lasts up there the entire time these things tend to have been flow six round pick number 187 went
linebacker in both Trey Moore was the linebacker we went with in the first version he was off the
board so he pivoted to Harold Perkins junior Moore has more of a high floor type of entry while I
think Perkins has more athletic profile more speed more sideline to sideline ability lower floor
but he's at the higher ceiling if Dorontay Jones can get the max ability out of him in the second
six round pick that we had we went safety with both but again a little bit different style of safety
VJ pain has a little bit more hybrid to him whereas Robert Spears Jennings is much more of a cover
guy for three to track star type of center fielder to do those types of things as they cover safety
in the future as he develops and then seventh round it was our hard pivot we went Vincent Anthony
junior edge rusher with the first mock draft in the second mock draft we went running back Roman
Hempi and I remember even telling you guys that in that first mock draft like once I got to the
seventh round I was like if I could do one over right off the cuff that would probably be the one
and truthfully that conversation kind of sparked this entire thing to be honest with you but we go
Roman Hempi I'm more comfortable with that pick you know I do think it ends up eventually pushing
out probably Jeremy McNichols from the running back room but I like Roman Hempi's potential I like
his future ability and if you can tap into that you potentially end up with Jacori Korski Merritt
Bill and you end up with Roman Hempi who knows maybe you strike lightning twice in the seventh round
with running backs Anthony Lynn out there earning his paycheck and earning his title as one of the
more veteran coaches in the NFL so the trade off here the islands certainly gives man a little bit
better when you talk about Doronte Jones like to bring pressure put in corners sometimes on an
island you're much more comfortable doing that with man sort of Lane is a rookie that you are Chris
Johnson as a rookie so you obviously like that part of it the explosiveness I think the second
class is faster a Spirits Jennings of 4-3 guy Harold Perkins is a 4-4-4 linebacker so I think
you get a little bit faster there which I think fits a little bit more of what the washmares want to
do and by taking your receiver of 41 whether it's Casey Consumption or is any of these other guys
you have a good like I said choice of a good stock of receivers to choose from with different styles
different things they bring so if you're David Blow you looking at impetus and say you know
which which flavor of ice cream do you want for your wide receiver room and David Blow can literally
customize the pick to what he wants whether it be Casey or be somebody else so for me
I think that the second class is better I think that the second class the one that we literally
just did is better I don't think it's recency bias I think that's pretty fair so I think if the
washing players were to find themselves in the situation where Arville Reese Caleb down sunny
styles Jeremiah love all these guys are gone whether you're trading back or not I think that the
the board shows that you're going to have more talent available at the receiver position then at
the corner back position if you pass up on that guy so that makes corner up above receiver now what
about edge what about all this other stuff granted those conversations certainly there are Caleb
Downs is there at 70 yet everything changes the scenario we're talking about the first scenario
that we ran into this week where those guys are all gone and certainly could be gone
by the time this thing rolls around at the end of April so next time I'm on lockdown commanders
