All right, welcome back to on Texas football. Welcome to a special live edition of on Texas football recapping the Steve Sarkiesian Monday press conference. 2:02I'll join by C.J. Vogue and Hank South will get to the news notes and nuggets here in just second, but let's start off real quick. Go around the horn C.J. big takeaway from today. It is Ohio State week. We're here. We can talk about the long horns in the book eyes now 630 on Saturday under the lights of D.K.R. Your biggest takeaway from today. C.J. was what? Well, I think we've waited nine months for this exact moment. Right. I think obviously kick off playing Texas state is great. Texas had a very, very impressive showing week one, but we've all had this game, right? Texas Ohio State folks around the country included have had this game circled no more waiting. It's finally here. Sarkies mentioned today he wouldn't, you know, he's basically anticipating this game being the most watched. Maybe of all time, right? If not a week, the month, the year said, look, it might be the most watch game of all time in the regular season. So anticipation is here. Both teams looking really impressive week one, both quarterbacks looking like they've taken a step. Buckeye luck should be a fun week.

3:02Yeah. Hank, you, it's really weird that you have two non conference opponents with these two bigger brands that are playing for the third season in a row. It's just the way it's worked out. And we'll hear from Sark coming up here in a little bit about what could be different about this time. But the two previous games have been huge, but this one, it's Monday and just being around campus, being around the team, we can already feel it. Yeah, the bus feels different. And, you know, it is crazy. And you know, just thinking about it looking ahead to this game, third time in a row, Texas has faced Ohio State. It almost feels like they're in the same conference at this point. But I thought one of my takeaways, hearing Sark talk about Jeremiah Smith and just, you know, if you look back at the past two matchups, you can make an argument that no school has done more to contain Jeremiah Smith than Texas has. You know, you look back to the 2024 season, held into a season low yardage, one catch, three yards. Last season, I think you had 40 something yards, seven and a half yards per catch. That was as low as output of the season. So Texas is doing something right.

4:03Sark talked about, you know, needing to account for him, his size, his strength, his catch radius, kind of compared him to a camcolman type where, you know, we heard him talking about camcolman in the same light as Julio Jones. He brought up AJ Brown today just that size and speed combo. So he talked about feeling Jeremiah Smith's presence and needing to account for him every play. So I'll be curious to see if we see a better version of Jeremiah Smith against Texas on Saturday or if Texas continues that, you know, going into a three game trend of holding him in check. So, yeah, but certainly buzz around campus. This game, the excitement is pretty palpable. That'll be a big topic of discussion this week and I agree with what Sark said today. Look, even if your fastball is really good, you can't just throw fastballs out of you. You've got to do a lot of different things to keep him in check. We'll talk a lot about Jeremiah Smith this week, but a couple of notes, as it really restricted the long horns going into this one, Ryan Day's press conference in Columbus is tomorrow for what it's where. So we track in that. But Sark was up today, Derek Cooper in a boot and Sark said he will be in a boot, quote,

5:04for the foreseeable future. Jerry Hamilton actually reported over on Texas football.com a little bit ago that source close to Derek Cooper saying he's dealing with a high ankle sprain. We all know how those can work and no timetable for his return. So that's going to be a storyline this week along with Hollywood smothers and Relique Brown who's going to pick up the slack in the run game. Obviously, Arch will be more involved in the run game this week than he was against Texas State. Maybe I don't know if it's more significant, but a more noteworthy piece of news. Cole Hudson did not play against Texas State. As of right now, according to Sark Cole Hudson is ineligible. It's not an SEC situation is an appeals process right now with the NCAA Sark said it is a different deal. Obviously, because Cole Hudson was never on a pro roster. He did go to the two tryout camps, but he was never signed to an actual contract. So it's an NCAA related thing. Sark said they'll let that play out then go for it or go at it from an SEC angle. So as of right now, Derek Cooper out of her underterm and amount of time with the ankle injury, Cole Hudson ineligible, according to the NCAA.

6:06But Sark was at the mic discussing other things the day, including Ohio State. This is part of Sark's opening statement right here. Thanks to producer Matt for getting these cuts ready. This is Sark talking about Ohio State, basically giving his overview of the buck eyes. All in all, it was a good win for us. It was a good start to the season, but we also know the challenge that we have this week. Ohio State, they're number one in the country for a reason. Ryan has done a tremendous job with that program since taking over, obviously, national champs a couple of years ago. Brought in Matt Patricia last season, led the country in just about every defensive statistical category. This year he brings in Arthur Smith. So it's a nice luxury to have. Having two NFL head coaches on your staff as your play callers, and they've reloaded. You know, they're extremely talented. I think we all know who Jeremiah Smith is, offensively, but Julian Sands, the heck of a player. You know, Bo Jackson, run of the ball. They got a veteran o-line. They've added some receivers to the mix, losing car and L. Tate.

7:10And then defensively, they've reloaded as well. You know, they got some really good players and some guys that have grown up. You know, with McLean, Matthews, those guys, you know, Pierce, but also the addition of an Allegro, the addition of a John Walker. They still have Kenyatta Jackson. They still have Devon Sanchez. So this is a very, very talented football team that's well coached. But these are the games that you love to be part of, you know, and we're fortunate that we get to be part of these games as a staff, as players, as a fan base. We're obviously looking forward to the opportunity. Should be heck of a week. Shocker Ohio State's really talented and they got a bunch of NFL players on their team. I know we're all floored to hear that from Sark. CJ, I do think it's interesting. And Sark mentioned this too. I am going to go watch the Ohio State Ball State game. I haven't watched it yet. But just like the Texas tape against Texas State, CJ, good luck getting anything off of that that's going to give you an indication of what either side is going to do on Saturday.

8:11Just like going into the game last year, I cannot wait for the chess matches on both sides of the ball all facets included. Yeah, no, absolutely. I would say very vanilla for both. And look, that's 63 points for Ohio State in 59 for Texas, including seven points from the defensive side of the football. So, you know, your, your offenses were out clicking, right? They were executing the baseline to the offense. And that's encouraging, right? We talked about basically the whole month of August, Texas needing to start quickly. Well, they did exactly that. Started three touchdowns on three possessions, defense, three stops on three consecutive possessions to start the game. That was something that Sark Asian mentioned today as well. When playing Ohio State, we got to start faster. We've got to find points on the board earlier this year than what we've been able to do in the last two meetings with the buck guys. But Jeff, we certainly heard from Sark, and that long story list of names for Ohio State on that roster. Look, you're going to be battling against some of the best players in the country. In Texas, very much in their own right, possessing many of guys, number of positions that are

9:14in the conversations for being the best at their position or it's manning included. So that's going to be really encouraging is building off of week one and now going into deeper parts of your playbook, both offensively and offensively, showing up a little in the run game, showing up a little bit when it comes to the explosive plays allowed. And then, man, we should be in for a real treat because Texas looked pretty good. I would say when you put up 59 points and only allow seven in week one. Hey, this is this is round two for Sark versus Matt Patricia with the Texas offense against the Ohio State defense. But you got a first year coordinator in Arthur Smith at Ohio State. You've got well, much champ back in Texas. And again, neither guy revealed much on Saturday. But Hank, I feel like, you know, being on the road, does, you know, we saw last year in Columbus, you know, Brian Hartline, who was called to play for Ohio State Ryan Day. Really, I thought really did a good job of insulating Julian Sain. Kind of took the game out of his hands, made it easy for him.

10:16Can't do that on the road this year, Hank, especially with I think we're going to see Will much champ be much more aggressive against Ohio State than he was against Texas Day, particularly on early downs to try to get them behind the chains. Yeah, I think you're going to see Will much champ kind of we talk about Sark being in his bag as a play collar. I think we're going to see Will much champ going to dip into his bag as a defensive play collar. He's some more exotic blitz packages. I think they're really going to try to kind of bring about the essence of a Will much champ defense, which is disrupting the quarterback. And so, you know, Julian Sain, a lot less mobile than Brad Jackson, but still has ability with his legs. Sark even noted that today, talking about how Julian Sain and Archmaning, just from this time last year, or just drastically different quarterbacks, and you're seeing Julian Sain be able to use his legs more again. He's not going to, he's not a huge running threat, but he's a capable running threat that you have to respect a little bit, not as much as Brad Jackson. But yeah, it will be interesting. I think we're going to see, we're going to hear call on Simmons's number probably a lot

11:16more on Saturday. I think we're going to see them get those guys more involved in the past rush, maybe some more NASCAR package. We'll see. But it should, that that's, I think kind of emphasis number one is disrupt Julian Sain and try to just take advantage of that once he starts and hope he starts to make some mistakes. Jeff Lansch Jackson mentioned that specifically. He said, look, we have to find a way to get him off rhythm, right? He is really talented from the pocket. I believe he was 21 of 24 in the opener, 21 of 25 maybe against the state week one. If Texas is able to find ways to keep him moving around, he is capable of running. He hates to run. He will do anything he can to not take off beyond the line of scrimmage. That's his game. But you keep him in that pocket. He will dissect you. As well as anybody in the country, but go back Texas did a fine job pressuring them a year ago. Go back and look at Indiana in Miami. The two losses late in the year, Ohio State suffered pressure from the front. Seven was the key. Lansch Jackson said, right away, he's like, we know we need to find ways to make him uncomfortable.

12:20That's the big key for Texas off from. Yeah, I'm going to see if we'll mustamp turns. We're him bios loose by the way. We're him bios. SEC co-defensive player of the week after that forced fumble and an interception and the win over Texas state. 16:25All right, let's hear a little bit more from SART today during the press conference opening Ohio State Week. He was asked about the physicality the last two times Texas has played Ohio State if he felt like Ohio State was the more physical team and we'll get into his answer afterwards, but I thought this was a really interesting answer from SART. I don't know if there's a common denominator. I think that each year was different, just like this year's different. We're a different team today than we were three years ago or two and a half years ago, and they are two. They were a different team last year than they were the year before. When you talk about Quinchon, Jenkins, and Travion Henderson, those guys were real factors obviously in that game two years ago. Last year, they had some elite defensive players. They had three of the top 13 picks were on defense with downs and rees and styles. Everybody's changing and evolving and playing their strengths.

17:27Like I said, last year, I thought we ran the ball really well and I thought we defended the run really well. I don't think it was about physicality. I think it was about our inability to execute the other half of the offense to get points on the board when we had chances earlier in the game. Then I think the biggest common thread in both games was we essentially played behind. We were playing from behind in the second half and that's an uncomfortable feeling when you feel like you're having to play catch up. You have to take a few more risks. That's probably the most common theme of the last two. I felt like both games were a little bit different. Even though the scores were similar, the flow of the games were a little bit different. Ideally, we can put a few more points on the board earlier in the game and maybe change the math a little bit of how the game goes and not feel like we're playing from behind in the fourth quarter. Yeah. CJ, if you just look at these two rosters objectively, there's just not much that separates from a talent standpoint.

18:28I agree with SART for better or worse in the two games. Ohio State was better critical down situations and in the red zone like goal to go situations. That's basically what decided the last two games. Even you can look at it because I looked at some numbers last night. Ohio State in the two games, they were six for 22 on third down, which if you're Texas, you're thinking, hey, we're great. They were two for three on fourth down though. One of those was in the cotton bowl that 18 yard. I think it was a run that Will Howard had on the go ahead touchdown drive. Then last year, it was a fourth and goal. The one where CJ Donald scored that touchdown early. CJ, I don't want to simplify it so much to say, hey, it's just about situational football. But when you break down, it kind of is whichever one of these two teams executes those critical situations. Better's going to be the team that wins. Absolutely. And look, Texas 11 to 15 on third downs, two of two on fourth downs. I thought some of large mannings best throws of the day, week one, Jeff, were on these crucial downs. I posted it earlier on Twitter today. The fourth and fourth, the outright to Emmett Mosley for a gain of seven.

19:30Look, that's an NFL throw from basically the right middle of the field all the way to the outside of the numbers on the line. That's a fantastic throw. The fourth and two probably a better catch than throw on Ryan Wingo's part on the out nut. We talked about the third and 15. You basically said everybody go deep and dropped the ball right in the bucket for Ryan Wingo for a 45 yard gain as well. That's encouraging to me. Now, Arches 1 mistake was in the red area, Jeff, but you go six of seven. You move the ball effectively. You stayed ahead of the chains enough to be able to move the chains on third down. I don't think that there were many third and 15s, third and 20s, like what we saw last year against Florida and Oklahoma. So that's encouraging. Texas can find a way to continue to stack up three to seven yard gains on first and second down. You're going to be living in a very dangerous area if you're Texas when it comes to having your entire playbook open for these crucial downs, something that kind of played them a year ago, but looked really good in week one.

20:31Yeah. Hank, I mentioned a little bit ago about, you know, well, much chance being more aggressive. If you look at Texas states to go distance on third down in the opener, a little less than four and a half yards, you'd like for that to be more mean ball state had Ohio state to average to go distance on third down a little over eight yards to go. So if your Texas, that's kind of where you want to operate. And Hank, you know, going back to you mentioned the Jeremiah Smith factor in this game, I do think this is a game where he probably gets in the end zone and the numbers are a lot better because I think Hank what Texas fans probably need to wrap their head around. If you weren't around for Will Mushams first go around to Texas or, you know, you're just not that familiar with this game, there is risk for award here. And I think that's some of it. And look, Texas states tempo and the temperature on the field probably had a lot to do with Sarg said today, a clocking out. It took like 160 degrees on the turf, which doesn't shock me considering how hot it was on Saturday. But there is some risk reward like you're going to give up some plays. The flip side is just like Saturday, which you hope happens against the Ohio State is what

21:31happened in the opener. You're going to give some up. But if you make more than you give up at the end of the day, you'll be all right. Yeah, I think it's just about mitigating those explosives. I mean, Ohio State has guys that if Jeremiah Smith is down, they can go to Bo Jackson out of the backfield. They've got a five star freshman receiver in Chris Henry. They've got the UTSA transfer, Devin McQueen. They've got guys that can beat you just like Texas has guys. If Ryan Winkos having an off day, go out to Cam Coleman, go out to MMO. You can kind of change things up. So there is risk reward. I think it's mitigating those explosives. And I go back to what Sarg said, starting fast and not playing from behind. Get yourself some confidence early in the game to where you're not coming out of halftime, trying to just claw back and then run out of time pretty much in the fourth quarter. And so, yeah, I'll be curious to see. I do. I agree with you, Jeff, that Jeremiah Smith is probably going to have a better day. I think he's probably itching to get out there against Texas and have a big game. Despite still being two and O against Texas, he just hasn't had that breakout game against the Long Horns. So I'll be curious to see how he's utilized.

22:31CJ, I want to go back to what you said here in a second about Texas needing to score early and Sarg talking about that. But this last clip will hear from Sarg from the press conference today. We're talking about it at the top. It's really unusual that two big brands like Texas and Ohio State that don't play a regulatory or a meeting for the third consecutive year. So Sarg was asked, if I frankly, what's going to be different about this third meeting compared to the last two? Yeah, I mean, I think that it, you know, I think it lends to strategy, right? I think it lends itself to style of play. I think it lends itself to, as I said, the life of a competitor and to your point. We've had some great success against really good teams over the past two, three years. We've had not so good success against other teams. Well, you got to do a deep dive. Well, why is that? And where can we make those subtle adjustments to continue to try to improve to play better against certain teams and continue to play well against other teams?

23:33I don't think it's a rinse repeat. And I think that's a mistake you can make. Is that, hey, we're good against this team. Let's just do the same thing again. Because there's really good coaches that we coach against. And they're making adjustments, too. They're making adjustments to their roster to try to be better against us or to continue to proving against us. They're making adjustments to schemes. And so you have to adapt. You have to continue to evolve and you have to try to do what we think is in the best interest moving forward for specific opponents as we go. CJ, I want to get your thoughts on this because when we talk about Texas scoring early and trying to not play from behind, I think if you're looking for a positive spin or kind of a silver lining on Texas in the third meeting, maybe from Sarc's perspective, maybe this is the best position he'll have been in in the two meetings because it's not a bowl game towards the end of the year. It's not, it's not game 16 where you've run out of stuff, which he admitted. That's what happened in that cotton bowl game. But it's not an opener where you really don't have a good feel for what you do.

24:35So maybe this is the time CJ where he's got a decent feel for what he's got. But definitely, you're definitely not going to be out of stuff in the second game of the year. And certainly not. And I don't think Texas really showed anything of note in game one. It was a lot of base stuff. So I mean, I'm going to sound as elementary as possible saying Texas has to start faster. Right? It took until deep until the second quarter in the cotton bowl to find their first touchdown, took until the fourth quarter to find their first touchdown in Columbus. That cannot be the case. And now, I know I'm not really saying anything groundbreaking here. When Texas wins the first quarter on the scoreboard, leading after the first 15 minutes, they're now 28 and one over the last three years. I would say that's pretty good. Obviously, things went very well in week one against Texas state. Will you be able to have that same start against Ohio? I would say probably not. That's a really talented football team with a lot of playmakers and game changers on both sides

25:36of the football. Playing at home, full playbook, a lot of weapons around you. Texas is able to run the football effectively. I think you're able to start to put points on the board earlier in football games. And that's something that we all look at and say, hey, that's probably a pretty good sign for this offense given how aggressive we all expect must champ to be with a lead against some of these elite teams. Hey, to CJ's point, I feel like SART in terms of the opening script, you know, whether it's 20 plays, 30 plays, whatever it is. This has got to be like 2020, 3 in Tuscaloosa, 2024 in Ann Arbor shoot, maybe even like 2021, first half of Red River type good for Texas to win this ballgame. Yeah, absolutely. You know, you look back and it's kind of I was thinking about that earlier today, that rice game in 2023. There were issues, you know, obviously we're not apples to apples with the same games, but there were people, you know, trying to nitpick, you know, still had a big win against your opener, but you're still concerned about week two against the big dog opponent going

26:37to Tuscaloosa. That's a lot different than how it's coming to Austin. But yeah, I think that that'll be the goal. I think he's going to do things that Arches, obviously, very comfortable with. I'm kind of curious to see, you know, we didn't see a lot of germane bishop and this is kind of just a side thought as we're talking here. Yeah, the initial drop, you kind of just, you know, I think he took his eyes off the ball, had the catch later from KJ Lacey. I'm kind of curious to see how they get him more involved. Obviously, I think we all know the other three top three receivers are going to get involved. Sterling Burkhalter, a big catch. So I'm curious to see what they kind of work up and practice this week. Obviously, it's going to be a lot of, you know, communication with Arches, AJ Mill, we steves our Kejan coming up with what he's comfortable with because yeah, they can't just keep doing the same things they've been doing. They have to mix it up a little bit. And I think we'll see that on Saturday. Yeah, I like the idea of they got your main bishop. They threw in the ball and that kind of bubble screen. CJ, when the ones were still in their arch, just put a little too much sauce on it. And then, you know, CJ would talk about Tennessee breakers in this game. I think one that kind of went unnoticed because the game was already well decided at that point, which of Texas state just kind of stopped playing RPO.

27:40They were strictly playing the run. Well, what's one really good way to counter penetration or defense, just screaming down hill, call a draw, call the lay handoff and they did with Relic Brown and that. It's not like the offensive line just rolled everybody off the ball. You called a draw. It was a great time to call it because the right side of the field was wide open. Like, I think really probably could have walked in. That's the kind of stuff CJ Saris can need to do to break Tennessee and really get deep kind of to wrap up the conversation, really get deep into his bag to get Texas over the hump. Yeah, look, and I think the other side of that is what works well with this personnel group keep feeding it, right? Until they're it's proven to stop. Hey, keep throwing the ball to Camcola. Keep throwing the ball to Ryan Wingo because what we saw week one is if you stop on the other one, probably not going to be stopped. Right. I think both of those guys compliment each other very well. Another wrinkle that we didn't see I charted the game. I've watched it back twice now. We'll go back and watch it a couple more times before Saturday comes in. Only one snap by my count in 21, the pony package only one.

28:43Now again, I'll go back and rewatch specifically for it, but I only saw one snap with it. Texas gained five yards. I would imagine Texas is using the pony package in a much larger capacity this weekend. Was that a was that on the first drive CJ where they had like a third down motion or leak brown out and was it a smothers handoff, maybe? It was a Michael Terry was the second back. Hank and I both kind of joke. Who's like, oh, he's on the field. Look, what might he do? And I think he brought right back to the sideline right after. So we'll see, but that Jeff, I can only imagine the creativity of color like shark can come up with with a brown with the smothers and hopefully in a couple of weeks a healthy Derek Cooper as well. See how much 12 personnel Texas uses used a lot of probably more than I thought they'd use in the opener was how much they use against Ohio State. All right, just to recap a couple of headlines will use some of your comments to do this. How is Derek Cooper doing in the book? But apparently not great. Sart didn't say Derek Cooper's going to be in the walking boot indefinitely. Jerry Hamilton reported over on Texas football.com.

29:46He's been told it's a high ankle sprain. That's according to a source close to Derek Cooper. We all know how those things go. No set timetable for his return. So maybe we see more Michael Terry or James Simon or definitely get an archmaning involved in the quarterback run game to take a little bit of the load off of Hollywood smothers and releap around this weekend against Ohio State. Hank we kind of had that fools gold outing last year in the Ohio State game where Sartre's point Texas did run the ball really well. But I thought at times it was kind of designed by Matt Patricia like, hey, we're not going to let archmaning beat us if Sartre is patient enough to run it 50 times. We'll let him run it 50 times. I think they ran it 37 so not quite 50. But they took advantage. And yeah, I think we all came out of that feeling a lot different about the offensive line than we did a few weeks after that last season. Yeah, that was kind of like our first taste of, you know, this isn't the best five grouping just yet. And, you know, so I thought I was mentioning today Sartre C.J. asked him about Dylan Sikorsky and Lauren Seymour and they kind of split time on Saturday.

30:48So of course, he's getting the start and he said they're probably going to keep doing that. They're going to rotate those guys and a lot of it, not a lot of it is Lauren Seymour kind of getting back into the conditioning and getting back into the swing of things after missing a little bit of time with it with an injury. But I thought that was interesting. Maybe that's still an ongoing battle or just trying to have both those guys up to game speed. Yeah, I think last year with Matt Patricia was, you know, first year as the defensive coordinator for Ohio State, I think I didn't give him enough credit going into that game thinking, you know, he wasn't, that wasn't going to be a good first game as a DC trying to drop stuff against Steve Sartre C.J.J. and he proved me wrong very much. I mean, he was, he was doing really well. And so, you know, I think you can't overlook Arthur Smith now and obviously we know what Matt Patricia can do both with NFL experience. Steve Sartre C.J. called it a luxury for Ohio State to have both those guys. Arthur note from today, Cole Hudson, not eligible right now. As of right now, don't know what the holdup is with the NCAA, but Sartre said it is an NCAA issue, not an SEC issue that's got Cole Hudson in eligible.

31:51So Sartre said they're going to let it play out and see what happens. And CJ will end with this from Tyler. Who's covering Jeremiah Smith, mostly game, little 10 or mask of CJ. My answer is yes. Like everybody is going to have to take turns. This is one where you'll trap him. You'll go cloud coverage, you'll split coverage. Like to Sartre's point. And again, we'll get into this later in a week. Even if your fastball is really good, you can't just throw fastballs. You've got to mix it up when you've got a guy this good. Yeah, you absolutely do. It was Brandon and his who played basically 90% of his snaps from the slot. Devon McEwan on the outside on one end. And then obviously Jeremiah Smith on the other. So it's going to be interesting, right? Because we saw some boat mascot in the nickel, right? We saw him at the star position a little bit. We saw a lot of Warren Roberson out wide. So who does Texas deploy in this big game? We see rotations get cut basically. So about 18 to 22 people, players per game, per of this magnitude, from what we saw over the last couple of years from a Sart team. So I would have to imagine right now it's Masco outside, Kate Phillips outside and little

32:5710 in the slot. We'll see. But Jeff, the answer absolutely to your point is anybody. Whoever's in a burnt orange jersey, they better know where number four is. And that was something Sart mentioned today as well. Even if he's going in the backfield, let Ian Jafarad do it like I don't care. It's going to take all 11 guys to slow down Jeremiah Smith because a lot of averages says he's probably going to get his at some point against Texas. Infinite Void, thank you for the Super Chat.
