1:01Hello and welcome back to another episode of Lockdown Gators, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Thanks for being a Lockdown Gator. It's your first listen of the day. The Florida Gators screen game against FAU was very effective and should continue to be arguably the best screen offense in the country. The Florida Gators on Saturday against FAU. Well, we'll say Aaron Filo, right, because there was Aaron Filo and there was Tremel Jones and we are talking more about the starters there, right? Aaron Filo only attempted seven screens, which by the way, all seven Drop X for screens were throws and catches, including one that was not necessarily like difficult, but one that could have gone poorly where he kind of like tucked it for a second reset and then threw it because the defender tried to get out in front of it. So there was that play, there was a great play by Aaron Filo.

3:05I know there's people that are set with me like minor league critiquing him on this morning show, get over it, but guys know the football is back. But Aaron Filo went seven for seven on screens against FAU, 80 yards, which is 11 and a half yards per attempt and one touchdown, which the 80 yards ranks eighth in the entire country or at least screens and pretty damn good, right? Ahead of him, by the way, Carter Bolivar was on a state, Kenny Minci with Kentucky, owned McCown with UTSA, Ryan Brown with Purdue, Caden Creole with Jacksonville State, Kevin Jennings with SMU and all from Monday night or last night, which was a turn up lights and then Florida with 80 yards there one touchdown again. And I know that this is a small sample size.

4:07I know that this is one game and this is not against an SEC opponent, but I do want to make it clear, this is a team that's going to be good at screens this year. Like we've talked about it before where with screens under Billy Napier, it wasn't that screens were bad, it's that screens were poached poorly and that's why screens were ineffective. Right, it's that not that screens bad, right? I know that we got we got into that a little bit with with Florida, Twitter last year, screens are bad and dropping edges into coverage are bad. Neither of those are bad. Florida is just bad at doing them and that won't be the case this year at least with screens at the absolute minimum because that's what Buster Falkner does. But you should still have a very effective screen game against most teams, right? Aaron Filo had 80 yards on screens on Saturday again, that was in three quarters. I would imagine that especially had they kept him in.

5:10It had been more because they probably weren't about to start, you know, really opening up the playbook, which we're going to talk about tomorrow. There was that there in Filo and I thought it was very effective again. He got he got the job done entirely in every which way he could have. There were a couple times where it could have gone not awesome, right? Like I said, like there was the time I think it was to Dallas, I think that they tried to jump it and he pulled it down for a second, reset, got it out going. Like that's a great play as an improvised or improvisation. There we go. That's a great play, right? That's what you did. This is still an offense that's going to be really effective and a large part of that is because of how it's coached up. You look at guys like K Jack, like everybody on this team was down feel perimeter blocking. That was the biggest issue under Napier was that there was not anybody really outside

6:12of maybe K Jack that was an impressive blocker downfield on the perimeter. There's just in shorter early in the Napier regime, but outside of that, there really wasn't much going as far as, oh, these guys are good perimeter blockers on screens. That's why you failed at them under Napier. So we're going to talk about the actual receivers and making plays when we get back with Lockdown Gators. And one of those was Vernau Brown the third right VB three. Had his first career touchdown on a screen on Saturday night in the first quarter. It's also a play where I think with the junior unfortunately got banged up on. I got rolled up and Vernau Brown the third four screen catches 66 yards in such a way that's right. That's the kind of guy I have. That's also the kind of guy you have in multiple spots in the room right. I know there's people that are not big fans of the idea of throwing a screen to Dallas

9:18Wilson. And to an extent I get it. He did catch one screen of his 15 yards. I understand saying hey we shouldn't be throwing screens to Dallas Wilson. I get when he will say that I get what you're saying when you say that. Here's the thing. If you're a corner and a lot of power force was I mean I mentioned SMU earlier with Kevin Jennings SMU DB's they're like all six feet or shorter and they're all 190 pounds or shorter. That's a power for a program. It spends a lot of money right. It won't see much of that in the SEC but you will still see that right. That means you throw the ball to a 6 3 2 15 pound Dallas Wilson and you say go tackle him then corners. Like that's the kind of play where I think people go oh if you're catching a screen you've got to be the speed demon that's just shifty as hell and it's going to go cadarious Tony mode and make guys miss or is going to go Percy Harvin mode and just outrun everybody.

10:18There's a different kind of let's get this guy a screen and it is to throw it to a big body ex receiver ex build receiver right and you throw it to him underneath and you let him run and you say you go tackle him then go ahead because guys like Dallas do not get tackled easily and corners do not want to tackle guys like Dallas Wilson. They don't again he's 6 3 212 pounds that means he's got probably on the average power 4 4 dB he's probably got 3 inches and 15 to 20 pounds over these guys. That's what you got and that's that's I think being generous on the weight you could probably say 20 to 25 pounds like that that's what he's got on. They don't want to go tackle that. Okay, what you didn't see much of in the screen game for Florida against FAU was that there

11:23were no you didn't get a Jaden ball screen. You didn't get a Byron Lewis do Clark screen. Evan prior was not around. You didn't get a single running back screen. You got 4 2 for an Irma on a third. One to Bailey Sockton one to Mike amaze and one to Dallas Wilson. If Eric singles in junior is available. You would have gotten some to him. Wouldn't shock me if you got TJ Abrams or Justin Williams against Campbell. We'll see what happens. But the screen game for Florida was incredibly effective against FAU. Again, this is a thing that we're going to talk about a lot this season that the screen game is meant to be a true extension of the run game where that's where we're looking for some efficient gains underneath if we break one we break one.

12:25But the point is not to break one every time it's to pick up consistent consistent yards. Right. It's genuinely extension of the run game because when you run the ball you're like hey, we're picking up 4 1 1 2 half 5 yards of pop we're okay but that we're cool with that. If you're getting out on screens you're cool with that too it's incredibly efficient. Right. Complete percentage is going to be very high on screens pick up yards and go. Like that's what you're going to be doing a lot of. It's a true extension of the Run game in a sense that you're getting rid of it quickly and you're forcing the offense to or the defense to really spread out open things up for your run game, but it's also just an incredibly quick completion where we're like, hey, let's just get a few yards call it a day. But let's play down this into here. And if we break one, we break one. Like that's where it is. And Florida, I mean, the film does not lie on Saturday. They were really freaking good at running screens. I would expect that to be the case even when we do get into SEC play. I still think that's going to be the case because of how creative the offense is and will be that I think that that's where things really open up for you.

13:35And that's where we're going to start talking about everything opening up defense needs to defend everything. They're going to give you those little completion underneath. They are. You just because there's a little hesitation there. They're going to give you those those quick screens underneath. It's up to you to block and then make the right read as a as a receiver.
