Former SEC DC Reveals What Makes Will Muschamp Different

You know, I stumbled upon one of your tweets yesterday to caught my attention. The timing of it was perfectly because a lot of what we were saying overlapped with what somebody on the Texas state sideline said that must-champ was two steps ahead of them. And you're someone what you said you're like he's always on the ball. Can you go into what you were talking about with with much chip in that tweet? Yeah, I mean he's a sharp sharp ball coach like everybody knows how fire he is. I mean we've seen the videos of him punching whiteboards and him and coach Sabin back at LSU just ripping everybody on the field probably half the stadium and has fiery personality. But at the end of the day he's a knowledgeable ball coach knows everything X's and O's from a defensive perspective and then he's kind of like a mad scientist that gets inside the heads of offenses and can discern and figure

1:02things out and then kind of lay traps for the for the opposing offense that they don't even know that they're walking into. Like I did a video series the other day from the Texas state game and I think it was during the game when they had the cost fumble recovered fumble for a touchdown. Well, must-champ had set up in a six-place sequence a trap for them. They fell right into it. Cost fumble recovered fumble, uh, tuddy for the long horns and it was a thing of greedy and that's just you know who he is and this chess match on Saturday between him and Arthur Smith. Like I've got a 10 year old daughter and I love her to death and I love my wife but for three and a half hours I'm just going to geek out on some really good football. Yeah, we're going to get more and some us-champ. I want to talk a little bit about your resume coach. You've got you came up the old-fashioned way. It looks like you came up, pulled yourself up by your bootstraps. What was your breaking coach and where did it go from there? So interesting. So I was uh played FCS football,

2:05won double A. They called it back in the day at Western Carolina. Then was a high school coach for a year, painted the fields on Thursday night, all of those great things that come with being a high school coach. Then I went to Fort Me University in the Bronx FCS, Division III, defense coordinator like 24 to 25, and then I got to be a GA at Georgia Tech. Then after two years as a GA I got promoted to full time. So I'm 29 years old and I'm a full time Division I ball coach. Which back then that was, it was a lot different than it is now. And now everybody's trending the younger. Back then when I was coming up, you had to be an old head to become a Division I coach and I became a Division I coach at 29. Then Georgia Leary gets another name job. I'm 29 years old about the head to South Ben and all of a sudden he has to resign within a week. And I had to start over again. And then went work for FCS ball for another four years. And then I went work for Nick Sabin at Alabama and that kind of just

3:09shot everything, you know, that just accelerates everything for everybody. And uh that's kind of part two of the big break. Yeah, you worked great. You fell apart then I had another one. It was good. And you worked for, or Leary, you, you CFF I remember correctly. So two times I worked for Georgia Tech and I worked for him at UCF and I wear that as a badge of honor. Yeah. Because Georgia Leary is just an old school Irish ball coach and uh he's very difficult to work for and with and the fact that I got promoted from being a GA for him. Then got hired again. I wear that as a point of pride because that is not not a lot of people have ever done that and you know respect the heck out of him. Yeah, and you worked for Nick Sabin who you know I watched the national championship game with a bunch of coaches at a coaching clinic. Right. The night that Clemson took it to Alabama pretty pretty thoroughly and that lose those former Alabama coaches had sort of mixed emotions. They were like, you know, they didn't like to see it but it's like it wasn't the worst thing

4:13they ever saw. I thought that was quite quite interesting. I don't know that I have that because the one year that I spent when Nick was amazing because I had access that people don't get because I was running recruiting and I was on the defensive staff. So I never left his side for a year. So I got to see things and learn things that most career assistants for him don't have that access to him and it was monumental in my development. So I think the world of him and then I work for Hall of Famer and Matt Brown too. So I'm lost that you know and maybe even Mario Christobal if he goes ahead and wins one someday soon he'll be a Hall of Famer. So I got I got some good guys I've worked for. Well I was going through your resume last night saw Christobal at FIU and I forgot about that. So yeah quite the resume and Dan Mullin at Mississippi State. We had a role in two bro. That yeah absolutely and that that takes us to you so you have some sort of a adjacency to much. What's the family tree that you guys share? So the biggest one is the schematic

5:15defensive mindset and and game plans and all those things come from saving and that's the you look I've got the playbook right here. This is the Florida playbook that all of the things that I was doing at Mississippi State that I'd learned from Nick at Alabama were the same things that were happening at Florida when he was the head coach and what I did when I got there it was so similar but the names had been changed over times and different stops and I went back and put all the names to how the Florida players knew him under will and I said this the other day there's 98% of college football coaches I would never do that with. Well Muncheb's different you know so the respect to have for him the players that he left me at Florida on defense like we were back to back top five defenses in the country and people on the back and good job Jeff whatever Will Muncheb left us right dudes at that place and so just you know tip of the hat to him and you know the stories

6:22about Will at Florida legendary positive then I go to South Carolina and help out with Shane last year for fun and I don't know how many years has been since Will's been there but at least once a week there's going to be a Will Munch champ story you know champ did this or champ this and champ that and just the amount of respect to have for Will it is through the roof. Yeah there was a lot of discussion especially from rival fan bases of Texas OU fans and M fans talking about you know Muncheb has been mothballed the game has passed and by and all that one thing that's from following Texas closely as I do especially since he was hired as he earned player by and right away and that's probably something you saw carry over to your time at Florida. Yeah absolutely and the way those kids would run through a wall-forming we played them when he ended up being the head coach of South Carolina we played them in the line after we won pretty good but the line to go hug Will Munch champ. Oh wow I mean it was it was like fan day you know all these you know five and four

7:27star kids that he had recruited just loving so much so that was special but about two or three years ago I went over to Georgia to hang out with Kirby and watch their whole process and practice so I go to the team meeting with Kirby did a great job then we go to the defensive unit meeting Glinch Human does this thing as the defense coordinator then Will Munch champ gets up in the front of the room for his turn to whatever they were talking about that day I wanted to put on a uniform I had been in uniform in 20-something years I wanted to put on a uniform and just go ahead somebody just the intensity and just the passion and you could tell the connection he had with every player in the room I mean he was a codie see he was the analyst whatever but the respect that Glinch Human has for Will it was obvious that you know a lot of the directives of what they were doing schematically philosophically were with Will like I know Will's not called a game since 2015 but he's been in every defense of game plan room at Florida at South Carolina at Georgia

8:32winning national championships all of those things so he's good yeah that's one of those things it's kind of hard to convey to readers I'm glad that you're you're doing that for me is that the player buying is through the roof they don't want to let him down they play extra hard I think they study extra hard right you mentioned that he hasn't called place since 2015 and being somebody that's that's called defenses for yourself what kind of is there is there a lag period you have to knock off some rust like this was just his first game to do that and so long do you think there was a period where he was trying to acclimate so it's a little bit a lot of different factors I think Texas State is a great offense like they're one of the top offenses in college football and they were a spread attack they were a tempo attack and a lot of the things schematically that Will's gonna do against Ohio State weren't even on display Saturday because it's an Arthur Smith offense and a Texas State offense are not even in the same language I mean it's completely different like they resolve spread formations I watched the whole thing Texas State Texas game

9:37and then you look at Ohio State Texas State is spread everywhere Ohio State will get in their tight bringing some big bodies because they've got you know great players at all levels so the multiplicity of personnel groupings that Arthur Smith and Ohio State are gonna do then combating that will must-champal deploy a lot of different personnel groupings that he didn't have to do against Texas State so it's gonna be it's gonna look and feel different than it was you know Saturday and it's I don't even know what their mascot is the Texas State bomb cats the bomb cats yep the the old movie with Scott Miller where they were the Texas State Armadillos with cats and they might remember that movie I do yeah these are the Bob cats it's so given the I give them the overlap and then you know all stems from the Nick Nick statement playbook what are the what are the core defensive principles that must-champ a body spot so I think one of the the biggest things that I've seen in the development of Nick's system and muchamp and Glendtune and Kirby

10:43and that whole tree right now is how much odd mint front they call it their their playing right so they they line up in a bunch of mint which they'll have two four eyes big deep defensive defensive tackles inside the offensive tackles a head up nose and then two overhangs and two inside backers and then they will run that against with nickel on the field with base on the field and they will do a whole bunch of sexy stuff you know pressures and things coming from everywhere out of that but will will also go to a bunch of the four two five four down looks and like the sequence of plays that I I reviewed the other day and everybody that's listening goes coach Collins show and go watch that that that clip and it was just six plays of him going from mint defense which is essentially three four to four down lineman and then running dime running base and just moving in and out and the pressures and things coming from everywhere I mean it's the the when I evaluate

11:47defensive play callers really offensive play callers as well how do they sequence plays how do you show something execute a certain stunner pressure show something different or the same and have a different place that you're coming from I thought the way we'll call the game Saturday was really good then the answers that will would go to whenever the fighting bobcats would get a play they beat the willy backer early in the game on a third down on an angle route yeah later in the game will comes back and puts a safety on that dude so just those little things that I don't think a lot of people notice but you can just see the answers to the test that will and set them up with this and then come and hit them with that set them up with this and then it's just it's fascinating to watch let's chat a second about our good friend Andy ludicie at my perfect franchise are you a displaced corporate executive or wanting to put your career back in your

13:53maybe a little bit more time can you talk about the first game of an install for these guys I mean there were there were some mistakes that you'd expect and it's it is a pretty tricky offense uh with a mobile quarterback right what what his first game install like for for a new coach you've done a number of times in your career yeah so just the the thing that makes it unique in coach saving system is there's a lot of things and I don't know how how much he had done this for Texas State because they were so spread but there's so many things that you build in as automatics within a call if they're two by two with this call we're going to be in this three by one with this call we're going to be in this that might include a pressure it might include a stunt whatever the case may be but the layering of the defense to be whatever the offense gives us here's how this defense is going to present itself the thing that's going to be interesting on Saturday is there's going to be so much that Arthur Smith does window dressing motions shift spread formations

14:57tight formations unbalanced formations and just the mental gymnastics that come defending all of that but then defending all of that with making all the right maneuvers mentally and communicatively to execute at a high level but I think at the end of the day the first thing will did when he got to Texas was he said if you don't hit you won't play yeah and no uncertain terms and that's in practice in games and scrimmages probably in walkthroughs knowing him right if you don't hit you're not going to play so regardless of the schematic find somebody hit somebody yeah right and then preferably if one of the dudes has the ball let's get a bunch of dudes hitting him and I just think that mentality piece along with the exos knows chess match you know I think at a certain point sometimes you just got to line up and run through the ball and hit somebody and what you can

15:58can convey that as good as anybody in college football it's probably no coincidence that Texas had maybe the most violent hit of the weekend with Kobe Black the safety that they got he just moved from corner that was a former cornerback that made that hit over the middle and then also something that much time is emphasized is just punching the ball out and Texas had two punchouts the big playability is certainly there but this all brings us to the million dollar question is how does Texas how does Will Must-Champ defend Jeremiah Smith Julian saying one of the best passing passing receiving combos right in a very long time but then also they've got Bo Jackson a better runner than that you know better than he was at this time last year Ohio State does have some questions on the offensive line just like Texas does right but when you put it all together how do you defend this group so obviously with Will it's going to start with stopping the run right you got to know where that what numbers Jack night 411 he's number four so I was right in the first time so you got to know where number four is right no matter what and whenever you know you're the corner

16:59of this defending more than nickel if he's in the slot you better get your big boy pants on and get ready to compete because he's the real deal if you're on an island but there'll be times and he even did against Texas state on third down is wherever somebody needs to be erased off the field Will can put doubles on him with the call or roll the coverage to him all those kind of things depending on the situation down to distance all those kind of things he did that some against Texas state I don't know their personnel to know if they had a dude that he was you know trying to wipe off them out but number four is worthy of that and one of the calls is jersey and basically it's the jersey number so you put the jersey number jersey number four and that's who's getting doubled and then how you double in misdependent where he's lined up and Will did that on Saturday against Texas state on third downs yeah so I heard a lot about the play the play the game plan going in a lot of cover four was that was on the agenda and Texas state actually does have very good water

18:02seaver over there and they basically took him away now we heard from the Texas state side they wanted to challenge the middle of the field more I guess they kind of knew that was coming but it seemed like a good tune up at least for your coverage and taking away the other teams number one one thing that concerns me a little bit is this is going to be a test of pure physicality because as you mentioned aren't there Smith is quite multiple on offense and he's going to bring in some tight ends and challenge that defense of front right and so that'll be the the schematic shift does you know I think the road of Pete you know Pete I think did a great job the last couple years at Texas as the DC but I just think the the ability to get big people on the field when Arthur puts big people on the field and still have a lot of answers because a lot of a lot of defense coordinators you don't see 22 12 13 personnel a ton you don't have a ton of answers and if you do change personnel you're not going to have a full myriad of you know things to attack an offense with Will Must-Champ's got it you know and that that piece is going to be so much fun to watch

19:08Arthur gets in spread whatever let's go play some some football but whenever the big dudes come in I'm so excited to watch I will combats that schematically and I know the the long horns are going to play hard be violent absolutely yeah mint front and that they've got to die maybe they want to want to unveil yeah does you have a prediction for the game I just think it's going to be good ball man you know I'm leaning towards Texas but I don't know that I mean Matt Patricia the defense coordinator at Ohio State is ridiculous obviously they proved that last year when they give up eight points of game or something earthsattering so great defense of collar great players on the defensive Ohio State and then the Arthur Smith Julian say in you know that's going to be intriguing too but you know I've been excited too I studied a bunch of archmaning film this week and I just think the watching him from the Georgia game because I watched that whole thing on the all 22 watching him

20:08in the all 22 versus Georgia then how he developed throughout the season then the Michigan game where he just everybody caught on camera I'm just going to stop giving a crap and you can see the way he plays that you know he's competitive he's conscientious he cares at a high level right and he prepares the right way but once the ball is snapped let's just cut it loose I got him combing out there I got other weapons that I can do things with just go out there and be archmaning and just play so I'm excited to see him do his thing too absolutely he's he's got the improv game that I don't think is uncle sad that goes back to his grandfather the athleticism and then he's got a lot of toughness that so even if he's a little inaccurate he's not going to he's not going to go throw for throw with say and maybe he'll go out there and use his legs yep absolutely working working inside Texas viewers finds you on the internet was crazy since I did those two videos half my new followers and
