In a world that can feel so loud, so fast, and so demanding, it's easy to lose touch with the
0:09
quieter spaces within us. The places where rest, healing, and deep relaxation live.
0:18
Today's practice, humming be breath with a healing light meditation, is an invitation to return to
0:26
those spaces. Humming be breath, also known as Brahmari Pranayama, has been shown to calm
0:35
the mind, soothe the nervous system, lower blood pressure, and increase heart rate variability,
0:44
all markers of deep relaxation and resilience. And one of the things that I find so powerful
0:53
about humming be breath, is how a little effort it requires, and yet how profoundly it impacts the
1:01
body and the mind. Studies have shown that even a few minutes of this gentle humming breath
1:09
can support the body's natural shift out of a stress state and into a state of healing and
1:16
restoration. It's a really simple practice, but one that creates measurable shifts in how we feel,
1:25
how we heal, and how we come back into balance. And when it's paired with this healing light
1:32
meditation, it becomes even more relaxing, offering a gentle way to nurture your body, ease
1:41
inner tension, and invite a profound sense of calm to every part of you.
1:52

5:06
Now, let's dive in to this humming bee breath with the healing light meditation.
5:23
So, finding a time and a space where it's safe and comfortable to close your eyes
5:31
and turn your attention within.
5:43
And with your eyes closed, just gently bring more and more awareness to your breath.
5:51
Perhaps you can feel the air moving in and out through your nostrils.
6:04
Perhaps you can feel the rhythmic and effortless rise and fall of your chest and tummy
6:22
that just naturally happens on every inhale and every exhale.
6:38
And then just simply begin to hum on every exhale.
6:57
And this is actually a yogic breathing technique called Brahmari Pranayama.
7:03
And at its most simple, you just naturally inhale through the nose if possible.
7:15
And then you hum on the exhale.
7:19
And you can do this at any pace that feels right to you.
7:30
You can hum on any pitch that feels good to you.
7:35
And I'm going to add another instruction here.
7:50
But continue to let this be incredibly effortless.
7:53
So, as you're breathing and as you're humming on the exhale,
8:04
just begin to feel the vibration of the hum.
8:11
And different pitches and different volumes will vibrate differently in your system.
8:18
You may feel the vibration in your lips or your mouth or your sinuses or your face.
8:28
Perhaps in your throat or your heart.
8:34
So just add this little bit of somatic awareness to this gentle humming be breath,
8:41
feeling the vibration on every exhale.
9:12
And there's actually been some really interesting research done on Brahmari Pranayama
9:28
and the effects it can have on the body and the nervous system.
9:33
So, this gentle humming be breath helps regulate the nervous system in a very direct way.
9:44
The vibration of the hum stimulates your vagus nerve.
9:49
And this gentle slow exhale also has a calming effect on the brain,
9:56
including the amygdala, which is involved in detecting threat.
10:03
So, as the amygdala becomes less reactive, the body receives the message that it's safe to soften.
10:12
And that's when the nervous system can begin to settle a little bit more and a little bit more.
10:20
So just know that although this breath is so simple, you're getting real benefits from it.
10:28
So continuing to hum and letting this be so easy.
10:58
So, as you're here,
11:28
humming and feeling the vibration, I'm going to tell you a little bit more about the health benefits
11:36
of Brahmari Pranayama.
11:41
So researchers have looked at how Brahmari Pranayama impacts our overall well-being.
11:49
In one study, participants who practice this humming breath for about 15 to 20 minutes a day
11:57
showed significant improvements in well-being markers like heart rate variability,
12:05
which reflects nervous system resilience and flexibility.
12:10
And what's especially interesting is that in this study, the group practicing Brahmari Pranayama
12:18
showed greater improvements in well-being compared to groups who focused on regular exercise
12:26
and getting a full-night sleep. So that's really a remarkable outcome.
12:34
And part of the reason can be what I've already mentioned, that it regulates the nervous system
12:41
and tones the vagus nerve. And another thing that may be happening is that this gentle humming
12:50
also affects something called nitric oxide, which is a gas that's naturally produced in our nasal
12:57
passages and our sinuses. And nitric oxide has antimicrobial and antiviral properties.
13:08
So as you breathe in and out through your nose, it filters the air.
13:15
And it's been shown that when we hum like this, our nasal nitric oxide production can increase by
13:25
up to 15 times its normal production. So we're increasing the antimicrobial and antiviral filtering
13:35
that happens naturally in our sinuses. And then, of course, that nitric oxide enters our bloodstream.
13:48
And some people have called nitric oxide the miracle molecule because it has so many benefits
13:55
for our bodies. It supports our cardiovascular system and it has anti-inflammatory qualities.
14:06
So when you're doing this simple humming, you're enhancing this natural process in your body
14:13
that supports immune function, reduces inflammation, and improves circulation.
14:43
So continuing to hum, continuing to let it be easy. And I'm just going to add one more
15:13
suggestion here. So you're already feeling the vibration of the hum on every exhale.
15:26
And now gently feel the expansion of your ribs on every inhale. So that's actually an incredibly
15:35
small movement but your ribs naturally expand ever so slightly to the front and the back
15:47
and the right and the left with every inhale. So just let yourself gently notice that very small
15:59
natural movement on the inhale. And then feel the vibration of the hum on every exhale.
16:59
And now as you're breathing and feeling and humming, we're going to invite our imagination to
17:25
become a part of this. So your imagination is going to give this nurturing hum a color and a
17:40
quality, perhaps sensing the nourishment that comes from this hum as a healing light.
17:57
And then as you hum, just imagine that that vibration, that color, that quality, that healing light
18:16
just goes to all parts of you.
18:19
So the reality is that this is very healing to your nervous system.
18:50
And your nervous system does touch every single part of you. It even controls many parts of you.
19:03
And it's also true that that nitric oxide in your bloodstream touches every cell as well.
19:12
So this vibration, this hum is actually nourishing every part of you.
19:25
And you're just imagining that healing light representing that nourishment,
19:31
and flowing to all parts of you, especially the parts that really want or need a little support right now.
20:01
So as you're humming, this healing light just effortlessly begins to fill you and permeate you.
20:22
This healing light just naturally begins to expand within or around you.
20:37
So perhaps imagining that this healing light can fill you and permeate you from the top of your head
20:53
to the soles of your feet and everywhere in between.
21:08
Gently imagining that this healing light can begin to fill you and permeate you from the right side
21:27
of your body to the left side of your body and everywhere in between.
21:42
Perhaps you can feel this healing light vibrating on every cell of your body from the front of your body
21:57
to the back of your body and everywhere in between.
22:11
This healing light can sink down deep into the core of your cells and your bones and your organs.
22:28
And perhaps it can even radiate through your skin into the space around you,
22:40
holding you and supporting you.
23:10
And then just let these final
23:40
few minutes of humming be the gentlest yet as this healing light just naturally and effortlessly
23:52
permeates and fills and holds any part of you that needs a little extra support right now.
24:52
And now just let go of the hum whenever you feel ready and allow yourself a quiet minute to just
25:16
feel the residue of this practice.
26:17
Now just ask your body if there's anything else it wants or needs before we bring this to a close
26:28
and just listen for any answer it gives you.
26:58
And then whenever you feel ready and in your own timing just gently bring some movement back into your relaxed body.
27:12
Maybe stretch or wiggle or move your spine just move in any way that feels good.
27:28
And then whenever you feel ready just let your eyes open.
27:54
So I'm curious how was that humming be breath with the healing light meditation for you?
28:03
