DiPietro & Rothenberg — Hour 2: Could the Jets have a winning record?. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
This is the DPA Troin with Rothenberg podcast. Hello, Mati. Listen live weekday mornings from 6 to 10 am of 880 ESPN in New York, the ESPN New York app, or on your smart speaker by asking it to play ESPN New York. This is DPA Troin Rothenberg. For me to believe you can truly win this division, you have to be a game back at the very least, going into that series. And right now, they're four behind 12 to play before that four game set. But deep down, I told y'all they weren't winning this division. It wasn't happening. And I don't care that the race lost. If it's July 7, sure, we can talk about, hey, they went 500 on a road trip. They didn't lose any ground at the rate. That's fine two months ago. But it's money time. This is DPA Troin Rothenberg on ESPN New York.
And streaming live on YouTube. Yo, every time I'm on a stream on ESPN New York, at least one person says to me or about me, I look high. I don't understand it. And I keep telling y'all. It's just your face. I've got sleepy eyes. I'm up at 4.30 in the morning, bro. It's not easy, bro. I'm up early, man. I'm training for the New York City Marathon. I'm trying to keep some physical features, some muscles. So I got to be in the gym. I don't smoke. And if I did smoke, I will be honest with y'all about it. What about drinking like your supposed brother? Yeah. Go bar, Wimby, Wimby, Yana. Wimby, Yana. Now the war was. Go f***ing French. French. Yo, my man was lit off the table. Jailin on a Buddhist morning, J.B. Man.
Go. Man. No. You don't miss that, you. Yo, by the way, by the way, Ray. Big summer for your boy, McCellbridge. Oh, man. Big summer for all them, boys. All from McCellbridge. They were particularly. Because there was a torch that had been passed. Rudy Go Bear had to wear the crown of, oh, man, this team trading five first round picks for you. Well, to McCellbridge, this had five first round pick trader for him. And this summer, hmm, then he did, was winning a championship. And then with a nice little icing on the cake, was what happened with the clippers? Five first round picks. Five first round picks. So it's not he's not he's no longer the guy. When someone says five first round picks, he's no longer the guy that immediately comes to mind. Well, again, like two, two buzz phrases. What slogan took the city by storm? One was nix and five. And that's that became a greeting. Hey, what's up, nix and five? The other one was f them picks.
We know what it was. And that was before the Kawaii stuff went down. And when all that happened, who? Wait, I don't, I feel terrible for clippers fans, bro. Terrible. Listen, you know, the worst part is it's all five of them. Kawaii just gets to skate. He's like, I'm out of here. I'm going to Toronto. Bomber gets to spend it for a year, 30 million who cares. But five first round picks, you help build the thunder into a juggernaut. And now Kawaii is responsible because we sometimes, we did this with LeBron. We treat the star player who is behind the big trade as if they're the GM. Kawaii learned it is responsible for the worst trade and NBA history. It's not the Luca trade. It is that Paul George trade. 10 first round picks in total, a couple of swaps. And what you got to show for it, the Thunder win a championship, SGA wins a league MVP and finals MVP.
And you won three playoff series. Three. Three playoff. So the nix this past April to June, when more playoff series than the clippers did in six years with Kawaii and Paul George. Terrible. Speaking of the nix, do they get a shout out? Because I read somewhere that the NYPD is reporting. Crime was down this summer. Is this a nix story? So here's the headline for complex. If it's not, I'll make it one. Here's the headline for complex. And it helped me figure this out. So the NYPD announces New York City just had its safest summer and recorded history with murders at an all time low. According to the NYPD, New York City recorded its safest summer in a history for shootings, shooting victims and murders. From June through August, the city reported 195 shooting incidents,
249 shooting victims and 66 murders, all record lows for the period and the entire time, Ray. I'm reenestinking. Oh, shout out to nix and five. Hashtag nix and five. Am I bugging? I don't think you're bugging. Because the city just feels happier. The city is happier, man. You're not going to tell me it's not. And unlike some people around here, I don't know if you listened to the show last week. There was a lot of controversy about taking the flags down in the office around here. Because not everybody's around here is a nix fan. Some people are transplanted, so I get it. But some flags were taken down in the office. I said it's too early. We got to celebrate the summer of nix past Labor Day, all the way up into banner night. And it went. Do we drop a second banner for lowest crime, safest summer and record a history? It could replace the NBA cup banner. How about that? You mean a third because the NBA cup banner still exists? Do you? Do you guys hang that? We're not hanging that. If they didn't, if they didn't hang it after they won like the Lakers did,
and I think the Bucks did, right? Did the Bucks hang a banner? They had to. They did. So I don't think if they didn't do it after winning, they're going to do it now. But if they did do, it'd be petty and I'd be here for it. I say just let it all hang. Nice. By the way, speaking of the nix, this show tomorrow makes its debut on MSG networks. And I'm excited for the team. How are we feeling about Dave Rothenberg? My man was, wasn't feeling great. Thursday, Friday didn't do the show. Talk to him this weekend. Sounds like he's a trending upward. Is he going to be as close to 100% like, where's the, what's the word on Dave? Dave says he's ready to go tomorrow. So we'll see him here on YouTube, here him on the 880 101.1F. And HD 2 and see him on television. MSG network. Now was this deal orchestrated by you
because you're a MSG employee? A lot of people have asked me that question. I got nothing to do with it, man. I'm just here. I just work here. Are you just, you know, doing the whole ignorance thing and being humble? You don't want to take any credit for it? I am. I'm like Jalen Branson. Don't call me the king. I just want to continue doing my job. Do it well and I want to win awards. But down he knows he's the king of New York. So are you saying you're the king? And I do feel like you're the king of the station. I can't say those things. He would look at me with arrogance if I said those things. Go Leo. Is this Santiago the king of ESPN New York? Don't feel like the king. I'll tell you what. Don't feel like you're working on the king. Wouldn't be working on Labor Day. I'm sure King probably wouldn't be doing doing this on Labor Day. No, you would be working on Labor Day. But you weren't 10 toes down. Folks tried to argue with you. Jerry Farah was coming at me and Dave. But you were 10 toes down. Never wavered. Never lost. That was very science. Yeah, we're talking about his nicks.
But anyway, yeah, tomorrow the show, DPHR, Rothenberg, David Rickerback on MSG networks. And I brought this up this week into Jolio. Listen, Rick's my guy. Big fan of him. I think he is a sensational talent. Do get a little concerned about him graduating to television. Do get a concern about that. Because there's no protection on television. So yeah, man, well, you could argue giving his a history. They don't really use a lot of protection in the crib anyway. But, but you're on one today. But, but you're right. No guardrails. And I liken this past week in Rick to like Jackson Dart. There's a certain jazz chism. Like there's a certain way they have to play in order to get the best version of him. So we're not going, you know, strip him of that.
We can't. Because you need Rick to be Rick. That's what makes him an extraordinary talent. You need him to be himself. But, there are certain lines he can't cross. So when do you think it happens? Like do you think this week, things start flying off the rails? Well, not right off the bat. I mean, he's probably going to push the envelope once or twice those first couple of days. But, you know, it's going to be one of those things that slowly, progressively builds. I think where he's going to be spending a lot of his energy. Again, if you listen to the show on a regular basis, you could you could feel like a little bit of attention building between myself and Dave because week one Sunday night football. Yeah. Cowboys giants. I think he's going to do everything he can to push that that lever little by little. And he wants a Dave blow up by Thursday Friday. I think I think that's going to be his goal. Can I? Yo, right. You know, I love you, bro. And usually when you like preface, what you're going to say with that, it comes with like something. Yeah, here's here comes the bug discipline in you, bro.
I'm so disappointed. How so? Because you had every opportunity. You had every opportunity all summer, not even just all summer post schedule release to be going at that man. And you're playing the whole humble will be, yo, the cowboys, I think the cowboys are going to win this game convincingly against the giant. Okay. So here's what I here's what I need to tell you. And again, if you listen to the show, you know that I'm pretty confident in the game because Dave has dropped his. We're going to kick your ass. We're going to do this. That will be competitive. But then, you know, at the end of the day, I think Dave just expects the giants to be competitive, not outright win. But if they do win, it could get ugly for me. I do expect Dallas to win. I do expect Dallas to win where they're not basically squeezing a call into diamonds late. I don't expect that either. I do think they're better. I do think they're more established on the offensive line.
I do think they'll be able to run the ball. But it's weak one. And sometimes things have to go out the window. John Harboss go have his team ready to play football. No, regardless of where the talent is, John Harboss a good coach and he's going to have them fundamentally ready to play. Where were the Ravens in the fourth quarter of week one and that bills game raster? Were they ready to play? There's the fourth quarter though. Well, of course they just ran out. They had 11, what was it? 11 point lead with 445 left in the game and lost. And again, if somebody makes a field goal, John Harboss might still be coaching the Ravens, you know? Like, I don't know about that. You don't think so? Yeah, it just felt like it'd run its course. Like all year long we had heard about like this could be it. Like, even if they, I guess, unless they win the Super Bowl, but even if they want to play off game, I don't know. I still feel like Harboss was out. There was like weird friction between him and Lamar. Like they were never on the same page when it came to injuries. As far as weak one is concerned, and this is how he gets to football,
I think while the Giants will be a better team this year, the Cowboys humble them to some degree, humble them in their fans on Sunday night. All Dak has done since he's coming to the NFL post-Rookie season when he's played a full game is beat the Giants. He's beaten the Giants. And I do like the Cowboys off season. Now, if Von Miller coming in at 37 years old, was their lone fix to what was the NFL's worst defense last year, you can say, eh, didn't do much. But Rashan Gary, drafting Caleb down, you got Q get in the bag and now you've got a full season there. Kenny Clark, like you got some pieces on this Cowboys defense that are in my eyes are enough to where they can be significantly better than they were last year. Going from worse to just middle of the pack, which is all they need.
And so I've been talking about the Cowboys, how high I've been on just because, how high I've been on them, just because they're offense, you know, if Dak is healthy with CD, we know for a fact, they're going to be amongst the top and the league. And of course, George Pickens, and that didn't become the dominating story. We haven't heard a lot about Dallas and distractions this off season. That's what I feel good about right there. Forget about, forget about all the other things you said. And listen, Vaughn Miller, I think, is brought in more for like veteran leadership, that maybe the occasional relief pass rate. He's not that Vaughn Miller anymore. I think people got to know that he's not that dude anymore. At this stage of his career, I think he's not quite transitioning into retirement, but he's getting, he's getting very close. It's there. But the most important thing for the Cowboys, it was all about football. It was nothing else. It was nothing, there was no George Pickens distraction. There was nobody was laying on the trainer's table,
making faces during a game. Nobody was going on podcasts, saying stupid things, you know, it was just about the football. And that, more than the improvement on the offensive and defensive lines, more than the changes they made defensively, more than Caleb Downs, that has me most excited. It's all about football there. And I can't remember it. I literally cannot remember the last time it was all about football and Dallas. And your season, by the way, didn't get torched a couple of days before it began with this micaparcin straight, which is near. All goes together. It all goes together. Did you see this statistic? So they had 26 players on, you know, that played defense to start the season last season. At a week ago, when teams had made their final cutdowns, 15 of those guys were not on NFL rosters. 15 out of 26. So it's a complete overhaul defensively. And listen, you're asking a lot to make all the changes. Yeah, Christian Parker comes in as your new DC. So you're putting a lot on this plate. But I just,
you're the Cowboys fan. Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't think, and I said this about the Bengals who made massive changes this off season on defense. I don't think we get to the end of the year. We're like, yo, Houston, Denver, the Cowboys, like they're all in the same conversation as far as the best defense in the league. But I also don't think because of how offensive, they just have to be average by a power. If they had, if they have an average defense last year, they're a playoff team easily. Yeah, and look, I know you get annoyed with, you know, the get up and first take segments. The Cowboys are super well, can say, we're not talking about that. We're specifically talking about what they are this season and what they are this season. And my opinion is better than giants. That's not me being a hater. That's me being a true teller. Yeah, but you know how I feel. So who are you telling? You know how I'm telling Mr. 65 or sooner. That's one talent.
And by the way, if the Cowboys do win this, win the Cowboys win this game, can you show up Monday and flaunt a little bit? See, no, see what I found. Come on. No, what I found gets under his skin. M. S. E. More. It's the house that resorts. Yago. Like come on dog. Like get it all the way. What gets Dave. Say like being like over the top trash talking like mean fan. That's not what sets him off. What sets him off is when I downplay it. That's where the whole like the whole, all the Cowboys needed things to clean up. That angered him way more than anything else. I said after that game, because he. He gets the vibe that I don't take the giant seriously. And that angered him way more. Oh, way more than that. You're kind of irrelevant. I know, but like it's perfect. It's perfect. That you meet 65 or sooner with an immediate loss to your team.
And you get to come on your network. Because as far as I'm concerned, the pecking order is James Dolen, Ray Santiago. So if you're a network. I do not endorse that state just for the record comes on. And Molly Watson. And by the way, giant fans. Listen, I promise you I'm not being a hater. But when I look in the chat. This is proof that I am right. Because I want to find the comment. Where is it? I lost it. But someone's like, and what's that press got record in the playoffs? Irrelevant for week one. Irrelevant. Haska's record against the giants. I think these 14 and three against the giants and two of the losses was his rookie season. So this game, I fully expect the Cowboys to win and to do so convincingly. Now Vegas has a line at minus three. And look, it's a road game. So you award the home team with three points. So they really feel like the Cowboys are six points better. It's also week one.
We saw the Raiders pull off an upset against the Patriots and week one last year. I get all that Piff Puffer TV. Ty, you are a hater. It's cool. I'm not a hater. I just, if me being a hater is saying the Cowboys who have largely been better than the giants the last decade are going continued to continue to be better this year. If that's me being a hater, find out where they've got the better quarterback. They've got the better offense. They've got a defense that I at least can trust. And the Cowboys have been the better team the last half decade. It's not me being a hater. That's me being a true teller. 899-3776. Let's hit a break. We come back and talk about the jets. Do they start three and two this year? I say yes. We can't. We can't. You can't. You can't. You can't. You can't. You can't. You can't. You can't. You can't.
You can't. You can't. You can't. You can't. You can't. Thanks for listening to the DPA Crow and Rothenburg podcast. I think they're listening to me. They're everywhere. I know you're here. Catch the show on demand wherever and whenever you want. Woohoo! Over here! Just subscribe to us. Rate us and review us wherever you get your podcasts. Women about their age. But she looks fantastic. I was in the car on my way to pick up rotisserie chicken yesterday. And I was listening to her on the Yankee broadcast. So, you know, happy birthday to her. An absolute gem. And hopefully she gets rewarded with a nice little deep-plair front for the Yankees this year. Before we get to my jets three and two prediction, let's go to my man Hiveyere and Queen to Chimes in on the show today. What's up Hiveyere?
Hey, what's up. Good morning, Tye. Happy Labor Day. Shout out to Nick's and Five and Safe New York City streets with a different feel like a really, really good one. But you can go outside and it's safe, right? You can go safe outside this year. Yeah, for real. Go be free. Enjoy yourself. Enjoy the rest of summer that we have left. So, you absolutely have to hang the banner for the NBA Cup. And when you hang up that banner, you have to play the music that San Antonio played for the starting lineup announcement. I think that's what you do. That's so offensively. Like, it's a real arena. No, you know what? You do what you want, but why feed the monster? That was so stupid. Why would you ever do that? All you do is you make the other. Hiveyere, I felt like there are 62 win team with we thought or some of us thought the best player in the series, they've got home court advantage.
So, did they look at the nicks as a monster? I don't know. I think that, I think they did it all season long. It was just, it was, it's what they did. But like, choosing to do that, against your opponent, you're just giving them a reason to try a little harder. So, why do that? It is, in my opinion, just stupid. And I think that's the next. You think the next would have tried. Less harder if the clown uses it. No, no, no, no. They're professionals. They're going to do what they do. But like, why give them any kind of, why give them any fuel? Why add anything to it? As an opponent, like, why would you do that? Like, I don't know. Sometimes you trash talk people into a better game. Yes or no? Sometimes you, you trash talk them down, but sometimes you lift them up. It can go both ways. Yeah, I guess so. It happens on weekends with Harvey. I'll trash talk them and then I get his best performance. So it can work that way.
Good point. Shout out to Harvey. Happy Labor Day, guys. Go ahead. I thought he had another point. No, that's it. I thought he was done. Oh, I thought he wanted to, he said he wanted to talk about, I thought he said he wanted to make a next point about hanging a banner. I bet. No, no, no, he did. He did early on right off the bat. Were you listening to him? No, boy. Maybe yeah. That's a bad, that's bad. That's bad. I'm a tie. No, listen, maybe I got, my attention was taken away by someone coming at me for wearing my Apple Watch Too Tight. In the toilet. I got questions. I'm like, why people pay attention to your wrist and the Apple Watch be in Too Tight? They're paying attention. And I guess that this is a compliment. My beer doesn't connect enough to my mustache, my Apple Watch is too tight. So people are like really locked in on me. What's next? Are we going to attack the Yankee Hat? Yeah, she got next. Someone did already. Someone said, are you wearing your son's Yankee Hat? Someone said that already.
So they're coming at me. Listen, it's all good. I'm not so off. It's fine. Jet starting three and two. Am I man, Joe Leo doesn't like the take, but I think it's because he's running scared, which is a movie we did have earlier in the year in First Watchables. It's not that hard to get to three and two. In Tennessee to start the season. Is it crazy to suggest the Jet's win necking? It's not insane. And maybe it's a little bit of an overreaction to what we saw in preseason, where the cam ward and that offense was terrible. But the line started at three for Tennessee. Tennessee minus three. It's now come down to Tennessee minus one and a half. So there are people pouring money in favor of the jets. Forget the Vegas sides. If you're the jets, shouldn't you be further along
in your development in the Titans? All these new starters on defense. Aaron Glenn's guy is super power. You got the second pick in the draft on your defense. Minka and Demario Davis and on your mind. Like you've got so much that you dare I say like. I don't want to say love because we've got to see it happen. But like about the team, I kept hearing about, well, this is the best offensive line. It has the back-to-back and AFC championship games. All right. So I want to see it. If I'm to believe Geno Smith was the worst quarterback in football, not named Justin Fields last year. And it was mainly because the Raiders were a disaster. Bad offensive line. Pete Carroll kind of on his way out. Team and injury. If I'm to believe what happened? Chip Kelly. Oh, Chip Kelly. We know he just torches franchises. If I'm to believe that's the case, I'm not expecting Geno to be in the MVP conversation.
Which by the way, 2022, I don't know how much people value this. Geno top nine MVP candidate. According to the AP poll, who would have thought it? If I'm to expect him to just not be as bad as the disaster that he was last year, why can't the jet offense do this thing that we haven't been accustomed to? Which is, oh, score touchdowns. And if you could score touchdowns, I think that would be good enough to beat the Titans. Titans aren't some juggernaut. Yeah, Cam Ward had a nice little finish to the year last year. But let's not forget. As much as I liked Robert Sala, just seemed like a nice guy. I did accidentally say Merry Christmas to him when I was filling in on the K-Show a couple years back when he did this, did the spot. That was not a good look for your boy. I just, you know, blanked. But anyway, Robert Sala got fired for a reason. You could argue it was not the proper thing to do to have it happen five games into the year, but he got fired because he was in a good head coach.
Now Brian DeBulles in his element, offensive coordinator, but I look at the Titans and I don't see a team that the jets are drawing dead against. I like Carl Nell Tate. Oh, Wandaile Robinson, Tony Pollard, former cowboy, shout out to Ray Santiago and their defense, I do think would be good. John Franklin Myers, Jermaine Johnson. So there are elements of the team that you like, but it's not the type of situation where you come into it if you're a jet fan or anyone weighing in objectively saying they've got no shot. So again, big ships turn slow. I was led to believe because I got told that by the head coach. Well, we need to start seeing it turn at some point and what better place to do it than in Tennessee again to Titans team, a Titans team that you should be better than. You should be better than the Titans. And now we get to week two, the Green Bay Packers.
Package fans, not happy with your boy because I stepped out on my local marriage, dip my toe into the national field and was hosting for my man Nick Wright. I had the audacity to say Jordan Love, not a top seven quarterback. In fact, slightly overrated. And so Package fans are coming at me because I said, hey, I don't think that a quarterback of that caliber who were all just like anointing should be one that's allowing an 18 point lead to be blown on his behalf. And they're like, oh man, Matt LaFloor's play calling, conservative and the defense. And I said, yo, four straight puns to start the second half ain't on the floor. That's not on the defense. Tell your quarterback to make a play. Mist kicks, I got you. And so look, maybe there is the karma element to this. I may fund a race on Ciego, striking out in a softball game,
and then what happened? I struck out in the softball game. I'm going at Jordan Love and then what happens? He likes to get defense up for 400, y'all. It's four tuddies. I can see it happening. But as we sit here today, remove karma from it, the jets can't beat the packers. A packers defense that I mean was got awful once Micah got hurt last year. And I understand, Tucker Krav, he got hurt. Listen, the packers are not some juggernaut. I can't see one of those weird Jordan Love games where he's just making bad decisions. The analytics love them some Jordan Love. I watched Jordan Love. He's not one of the 10 best quarterbacks in football. They're a better team than the jets. Sure. But you're coming in with some juice, some momentum, home opener. Why can't you win that game? Not what I will say is week three, drawing that. You're not beating the Lions. It's a big year for Dan Campbell.
Everyone was singing his praises. I think the honeymoon has kind of ended because of some of the foolishness that we've seen. The NFC Championship game. He's never going to live down. Mr. Playoffs last year and I get they had a lot of injury. Sure. But maybe the seat is a little bit hotter than folks are led to believe. But with that said, jets no chance in Detroit. I don't care if they're one in one, if they're two and no, they're not beating the Lions. But then we get to week four, y'all. Interesting spot. Bears. Bears jets sandwiched in between a Monday night game. This is for Chicago. A Monday night game against Philly. And then the following week, they're playing the Packers. So do they take the jet a little lightly? Now, what I will say is if you are building your case for your team to win a game and it's predicated on the other team taking you lightly because of their schedule and it being a trap game, it tells me
you don't really feel all that confident. But all I'm saying is they can win the game. They can win the game. They're going to beat the Titans. They'll hang in there long enough against the Packers where I think they will win. And then even if they lose, I told you Detroit, that's an automatic law. I'll bet the game they're not beating the Lions. That's a loss. Week four, gun to my head, I think the Bears, when the Bears are the better team, Ben Johnson, a fully bought in on, Caleb was sensational. I don't want to say all of last year. It really was the fourth quarter magic. But Caleb obviously took a jump from year one to year two and the Bears are better than the Jets. Week five, you then get to the Browns. So listen, three in two through five games, it not only is on the table, but I'm predicting that's what's going to happen. That's what's going to happen.
The Jets will win through the first five games and the closer we get to Sunday, six days away, I feel more confident in it happening. So sign me up. I want to hear from you all, Jeff, in 090, 0193776. I see y'all in the comments. I see y'all in the comments. Let's do it. Three into, and it starts. It starts this Sunday. Now, a week from today, I could look in like just an absolute before. Agile over my face. Gainer and team, they would beat the Titans because it's like tie. You should have seen this coming. You can picture how it happens. Robert Sala Revenge Game, the defense forces, Gina into a couple of turnovers. He's taken sacks. You can see Sala like fist pumping. And who are you as the fan of a team coming off a three and 14 season to say that any game is a guarantee, Doug?
Who are you to do that? I get it. I just feel confident. You're and hit that subscription button. We're nearing 50,000 subscribers. So let's get there, man. How about we get there? This might be too aggressive. I'm going to say before the start of the football season. But let's get there before the Jetson Giants kick off on Sunday. 50,000. We're at 45.6. Let's get to 50,000. So I'm in the comments. On how the Andrew says, tie is drinking too much. Go get them. Hey, listen, thought about it. Too early for that. A little too premature. Because I was going to say, look, my kids are gone until tomorrow.
So Cassie and I, after this show is over, we're popping outside. Like the parents are going to be outside. And so we're trying to figure out what to do. My grandmother is not having a barbecue. So, you know, we're exhausting all of our options. And so when I see you say, go get them. I was there. Might not be a bad idea. But two months too early, that starts really ringing off around Thanksgiving into, you know, the holidays, Christmas. September 7th, gokito is a little bit too early. Harvey from Queens says, damn, I see what they say. You be high. And he's not talking about how I look, which, I mean, a little, a little handsome on the YouTube stream. He said, because I got the Jets going through and through to start the season, I don't know how that's crazy. How is that like an insane take? They are, you could see them beat in the Titans. They'll be favored against the Browns.
So all they need to do is when one of those three games packers, Lions Bears. Piff Puffer TV says, tie, take the deodorant and clone from behind. It's actually not deodorant. It's, uh, what do you call it? It's body glide that I have to rub. Excuse me. Yeah, hey, listen, listen, let me explain myself. Yeah, I'm going to have to hear this. So I'm a runner, which means when you run long distances, especially in the summer, you have some friction happening between your thighs. And I used to get like, you know, these scrapings and those are really, really tough to do with. So I had to purchase some body glides to rub between my thighs into the Gooch area and also on my feet. But why the feet? The feet is because I get, um, I'm flat footed. And once there is, uh, sweat on the feet, I get those, uh, blisters. Okay. The friction between the sweaty feet, the sock and the sneaker creates, um, blisters.
So I'm not a runner like you are. Like I, I used to do a lot of it when I was younger. It's off of the fine of time now. The chafing thing. Yeah, it was never a problem for me. Never a problem. Were you doing distance running? Three miles at a time. Yeah. Or a lot of people were talking like, I did 13 miles yesterday. That's what? Are you doing a marathon? Yeah. I'm, I got the marathon coming up well in the first. Oh man. Which is tough. 26 then. Yeah. That's, that's tough because it's, uh, just Raiders that day. Fernando Mendoza, I predicted he's going to make his debut. When you look at the Raiders schedule, like that's the perfect opportunity for him. And why is that time? Raiders? Yeah. Oh, I see where you're trying to stop it. Play cards with my superpower really. Well, it's only because I see where you're trying to set me up. But I'm doing no such thing. Listen, they played the chiefs, the Patriots, the bills and the Rams weeks four through seven.
And so yes, it isn't a little bit of a drop off going from that to the Jets. Sure. Doesn't mean the Jets can't start the season three and two. Stop being a miserable fan. Like as high as you are on that pathetic win from your, your Michigan war. Never said that. Be never said that. Be on the Jets. Be on the Jets. 899 99 3776. So yeah, that explains the body glide. Does that, does that help Joe? Does that help you a bit? I get it. We're not doing anything lusty here in the office. In between breaks during the show. Let's go to why is it called body glide? I don't know. I guess like the implications, you know, because it really it, I mean, technically it is so your body can have some glide. Yes, I guess. I don't want the, I don't want the friction burns man. What's the text underneath the actual logo of your body glide?
Say that one. Looking at it. Like the text underneath like the logo. Oh, original anti-chafed bomb. Oh, okay. I just, because usually the descriptions, I wanted to see if the description was a little bit more risque. Yeah, nothing there. There's no lustiness happening. Though I did say, I did say the kids are going this weekend. So in Cassie's up. So, you know, when's our longest break? You think you got enough time? God bless you. How much time is that? Whatever you want to make it, bud. Whatever you want to make it. Yo, shout out to Missy Elliott. She put that song out all those years ago. One minute man. That's all we need here. Play it. Eight, thank you. Nine, one, nine, three, seven, seven, six, Bobby's a young. I can't believe somebody would say that on air. What's up, Bobby? Hey, good morning, Ty. I'm listening. I got to love you as a jet fan. You know, I agree. You know what? I actually agree. I mean, we want them to win, right?
The big thing like you said is, can the defense be average? Just average and get some turnovers. I'm more nervous about Geno not turning over the ball because I remember when he took over for Sanchez. Right? He was worse than Sanchez with the turnovers. But if he can, and that would be good coaching, right? Like when Paul Seals did it with O'Donnell the first year. Just, you know, be like that. I see it. I mean, look, I want to win. I want H.E. He's a former jet to win. You know, I, to me, the optimum would be get us to like five and four, four and four. Geno gets a minor injury, not a big injury. I'm a good bitch. And the other guy takes over and gives me quarterback. Or whatever. He stays late for a game and they sit up. And the other guy is good. That because listen, I just don't trust Geno. And he, but he's right.
Okay, Bobby. Hang on, hang on. Hang on. First of all, rooting for a guy to get hurt is, is this like reckless? And I don't think that you know, I'll take that back. I know I won't say injured. Just like something where the other guy took over. I let's just strike that from the record, your honor. My question would be this, if the jets are somehow, not from my mouth, from your mouth, five and four, that would mean they're playing, they are in the play, you know, through nine weeks of the season, in the playoff hunt. So the quarterback is doing enough and look, there are varying degrees of this. But he's doing enough to where they are, you know, a head above water and outperforming expectations because they're over under this year's five and a half. So if through nine games, Geno's playing well enough to have them five and four, why would you want them to, to strip him off his, of his title as QB1? Like, why would you want him then to mote it? That doesn't make any sense to me.
And that's okay. I've been a fan since 1967. I've seen it. Here's what, why? Because you're not going anywhere, Geno. He probably won't even be on the team next year. 100%. Well, you got to do, come on, we're going to draft the first round pick next year, all right? That's what you're going to look eventually. I'm not against you. I think Geno's decent as rookie year was eight and eight. But he's 36. He's been around. So to me, a good season is between seven and 10. I have a quarterback, maybe Cade, that's going into the season. Now we could take the three picks and not have to pick a quarterback. I want the jets to win a Super Bowl again. I'm getting older. I'm in my mid 60s. That's why I would say, but listen, I love your optimism. And I want to hold up the show. And I hope my booklet nets are the same way. Because I've seen a lot of losers in the bunch of years. Joe just got as excited as I've heard him all morning. By the way, do we have a breaking newsory and I appreciate the call.
A Sean Marx has got a seven year extension. I want you to stop that, please. Jazz hands. Because anytime you lose 60 games in a year, that's just floats the boat of nets management. Let's go to around the league with a man race on Tiago. It's time to go around the league. And it's week one. Finally, we made it. Tie. That's all I keep telling people. We made it. Some of our discontent is over Yankees, whatever it is. You ain't got to worry about it no more. We are where we need to be. So let's start with the big news of the weekend. If Sunday you probably had a lot going on. You probably missed this, but Adam Chef, the reporting. Yes. Teams were notified Sunday that Roger Godell, the commissioner, as a finalized new four season extension that runs through 2039. The contract expires March 31st, 2031.
So 2030 season, I should say, is when it runs through. So Roger, a lot of people say, um, maybe he's coming to the end. He's not going nowhere. No. Roger. Roger's got hell of a gig. And he's been there a long time, man. So I was going through like old videos. You know, I'm like a kind of a uniform, a fish in auto. Yeah. And so I went way back. It's like when the Broncos first brought out the Nike uniforms with the big orange swoosh on them. Like John, I always last a couple of years before they won the Super Bowls. And you see like the NFL like, and I forget what his title was at the time. But he's like not low ranking, but not high, high ranking either. There's Roger Godell with the press conference. It's a young Roger Godell. It's amazing. Look. Been around a long time, man. First of all, I love that he's embraced that at the draft. Folks blowing him. It's like amazing. Remember way back, this is probably like a decade ago, 12, 13 years, when folks legitimately had like discussions about
oversaturation of the NFL. Like is the league doing too much? Are we playing too many games? We're stretching to week 17 and now week 18. We're playing on too many different days. You added Thursday night football. Like is that going to be bad for the NFL? What's the verdict on that? The verdict? I mean, he's pretty good. He's been pretty damn good. He could. I could like, we were worried about that too much football. And we love it, man. We can't get enough of it. We're playing on a different country's expansions coming. How much of that is because this is the Golden Goose. And we just keep, we'll keep going to it. Like what would eventually kill the Golden Goose? I don't think anything, man. Like it's hard to imagine it. And I guess, like boxing in the 80s and 90s, like you could have said that. Like what's going to kill it? So it's hard for us to like fathom anything can. But it's football, bro. Like everyone loves football. We're getting it played on like every day now.
We had a Tuesday game during the cold season. They're taking the NBA's Christmas market, even. Yeah, which the Braun is not happy about. Oh, well, too bad LeBronch. I also don't like it. As a as a die-hard football fan, I don't like it because it just requires too much. Eight games. It's a lot, man. It's too much, man. Especially when you got two kids running around. This stuff. It is, it is. We're kicking off the season. The Super Bowl rematch on Wednesday. It a clock. NBC. Seahawks. Patriots. You read a little bit of injury. Your poor Travegan Henderson did not practice yesterday. Hasn't practiced in two weeks due to an ankle injury. So I think they have walked through today. But I don't know about Travegan Henderson. He's not playing. Which, uh, well, note that because I believe Travegan Henderson is on the fantasy team that I co-drafted with Rick this past week. Wait, you're doing fantasy? Yeah, I was co-wrestling to being a, uh, an advisor, I guess you would say on Rick's fantasy team.
So you're a long way to go? And I said, GM, if you will. Yeah, I said, like, the, like, the, uh, bill par cells when he was a Mike T in Miami sort of situation. Wait, so you're no longer an NFL purist, man? And listen, I got, I got, I got peer pressured, basically. I actually appreciated that about you. That you were just like, going home now. I'd never had that. Well, I told, I told Rick, I'm going to like, do my best to like, not be involved with like roster management. That's on you now, bro. Like, you can ask my opinion on stuff. But like, this is, this is your team. I'm just here as a consultant. That's it. Uh, I'm disappointed. Yeah, I am too. Meanwhile, Nick Imannuori is, uh, dealing with an ankle injury of his own limited participant, meaning he's not practiced since coming off July ankle surgery. So we'll see if he plays on Wednesday night. I don't think he will. Lee, there's the same sort of situation. Uh, Thursday. Wait, hang on. I got a question for you. Yeah. What's going on with Christian Gonzalez? Is he going to play? He keeps putting out there, man. He doesn't want to commit. Uh, this is a situation, man. He's a big story.
Yeah. Because Christian, and listen, he's, he's young, but he's, he's earned the right to to make his kind of the man's here. But like, he's kind of talking out of both sides of his mouth with it. Like, he's, I'm here with the team. Like, will you commit to playing on tonight? Hey, you know, it's, I don't know, man. Christian Gonzalez. Very maybe on Belish. It is kind of like one of the things I saw around all weekend, because the Cowboys cleared a lot of cap space. Not a half, like, 30 million dollars in cap space right now, a 30.3 or 30.7, something like that. And there were two camps. One camp is like, oh, this is the max cross. I don't think that's happening. Another camp was saying, oh, get Christian. Get Christian. I don't think they're doing that either. I don't think Christian's going anywhere. Yeah, I did see someone float out there that, and it's been a popular rumor. The Cowboys at some point are going to trade for Max Cross. I don't think that's happening. Do not think that's happening for a couple of reasons.
One, I think if they were going to do what they'd have done it already. Two, they, so that whole thing with Baltimore, when that trade died because of the physical. Yeah. I believe the doctor who performed the procedure on him is the Cowboys team doctor or connected to him in that light. And he's performed like numerous surgeries on various guys. And he definitely informs their opinion on people. That's why they took like, Jalen Smith that year after he came off the really bad knee injury. I'm doing it, yeah. So they have a lot of the information. And I think they would be comfortable trading for Max Cross. If it didn't have the price tag that it would cost. And I'm not talking about just the financials. I'm talking about the draft capital, which they don't really have a lot of because of the the Quenin trade, the George Pickett trade. I think they traded another third around there this year for the offensive linemen. So they got a lot of draft capital invested. So I think these next couple of years are a big go for it time for them.
I don't think however they're going to trade another first round there. Don't think they're going to do that. Australia football about this. Niners. So they went on Friday. There's two different schools of thought here for the Rams in the 49ers. You followed this time? Yes, I have. So so the Niners went on Friday and they're adjusting to the new time zone. So they'll have spent almost a week there. Kyle Shanahanch talked about a lot of things. I'm going to give you this story in three parts. First is they lose what they call a home game. Now, what do you talk about? This was supposed to be a Rams home game. They lost the game in 2005. Well, Kyle Shanahan says those are Niners home games. It's it's cool for us. Just we always have an advantage of getting having one. I see it as one home game of year in LA. It's just the way our fans are and take over that stadium. So it was disappointing to let them off the hook. And I'll get them out of that. And but I have a feeling or knowing how our fans roll. I have a feeling they won't be much different here. I expect to have a good showing. And I want to say it hit me right on the plane. But after being here for a couple of days, like this is the right time to be here. It's right place to be and it's the right team to go against.
Yeah, listen, he feels away. Well, I like the little psychological warfare. There's a whole game. There's some shade and some shade. And listen, that that is a real thing. So the other angle is like I said, the Niners have been there. Excuse me. What's going to talk about this game? Niners have been there since Friday. Or is it Saturday or Sunday? Because Calshan has been very confused about living in the future. Now see if you can follow this. And we did our totally normal routine. I'm not sure because we're like I said, we're a little confused with when I look at my clock and it says a time. And then I try to see my family's time and it says the time. But it says yesterday. I don't even get how that's possible. So I feel like I'm in the future. And then also when we play on our Friday, which I think is the Thursday in the US, where such creatures have happened. So I call today Tuesday. No wait, sorry I call today Wednesday, which is the first day we put in a game plan. But I think it's Monday, however though it's Sunday and the present. So like I'm going to mess that up all week if you guys ask me. But today is just our first day of the game plan, which is a Wednesday. We'll put in some on a Thursday.
Friday is the final part of the game plan. Saturday we walk through when we play on Sunday, which is a Friday in Australia and a Thursday in the US. So don't ever make me do that again. That is a true confusing man. Yo, the fact that it was a hard follow. He didn't have notes. He just like did that off the dome. He like freestyle that. That's nuts man. That is actually nuts. I like that. Can I just say this one thing about the Niners request? So they're actually my pick to go to the Super Bowl. I got the Niners and the Ravens in the Super Bowl. Here's my problem. There's so much variation with this team. Like I could see San Francisco finishing six and 11. Like that would not shock me. I also can see them obviously. As I just said, going to the Super Bowl. Like there are so many different variables with them. You've got Kittle coming back from injury. McCaffrey, the whole contract situation. Purdy played nine games last year.
But you do bring back D-Bolt in. Comes my Kevin's Trent Williams is getting. So they've got like a lot so many older players that they rely on that doesn't exactly make me feel comfortable. But the team is still loaded with talent. Still loaded with talent. And so while they are my pick to go to the Super Bowl, I would not be shocked at all if they finished six and 11. And I know that sounds like convoluted. But they are as high variance of a team that I think we have in football. You can't fool me. You went to Australia to get away from the substation. Keep your guys healthy. Oh, listen, on the injury note real quick, Kyle Shanahan did talk about living in the future and how that's an advantage there. Because he's meant to all these guys. McCaffrey, Bosa, Kittle. All these guys trying to work back. What? Can we get an injury update? Because we're technically in the future. From where we're from. The Rams are in the present. I don't know how to talk about injuries still tomorrow. Wait till tomorrow. When are we talking about Jed York? Is he in the future or is he in the past?
You're listening to DPH on Rothenberg on WHSQ WCBSFM HD2, New York. That's unbelievable. We spent a lot of time on that. Did you see Michael Irvin defending him? Michael Irvin. I mean, is that defending him or is that just talking about what? So, Michael Irvin. Okay, okay, hang on. Let me, let me, let me phrase this. I gotta, I gotta use, I gotta choose my words carefully here. No, I don't have a CD to why. Okay. Michael Irvin retired in 1999. That's 27 years ago. You would be correct, Michael. The vet, the vet turf took his neck out. No, serious. Like, I watched that game live. That, that was the game that made me hate Philly fans. That was the game. Um, so Mike's been retired since 1999. But the playmaker? The playmaker never retired. And that's all I'm gonna say about that. Oh, yeah, he's out here. He never retired. Sometimes to his detriment. All right, we talked about the variants and plans between the teams.
Here's Sean McVey on the Rams plan. And we'll talk about that in a second. Yeah, everything is geared towards what we think is best for the players. Based on, you know, that's what we'll guide every decision as long as I'm fortunate enough to, to be the head coach. And so we felt like staying in our rhythm and routine and then traveling when we do, which I'll go over with the players this afternoon. But the, the thinking and its simplest form is, what do we deem the best for our football players? And for them to try to be at their best. There's different approaches and theories. But I do have a lot of trust in our group. And we'll see, you know, hopefully it works out. And I know that we've got a bunch of guys that, uh, I think, you know, we'll feel good about the plan. And then ultimately it's, let's go play to the best of our ability. And that three and a half hour went over a lot of it. So here's the thing. The Rams are flying Tuesday, 16 hours crossing the international date line. Land and Melbourne on Thursday. Check into the hotel, sleep, wake up, play football. Total contrast. We're going to see what works out better for who. Yeah, I, I think the Niners win this game.
Oh, by the way, the, the, the Niners say they expect to see Aaron Donald. The Rams don't expect any discipline now for Pukinakua and Alleric Jackson. Are not on the commissioner's exemplest yet. Yeah, but I guess that could change, right? Like from what I was reading this past weekend, it doesn't mean they won't eventually. I mean, it's Monday. It's Monday. So I think they're good for this game for this game. But I mean, like, uh, at some point during the season. Uh, a couple notes for you after months of contemplating retirement. Safety Harris and Smith has agreed to return to the Vikings for a 15th season. He'll sign a one year contract worth 12.25 million with a max value of 16.25. That's per in rap port and Mike Garafola. Second vet defender to sign with the Vikings this week, joining linebacker Kyle Van Neuhe. Another guy who's not quite retired, Aaron Rodger Steelers are motivated to send him out like a winner in his final season, Alex Smith, telling the Pittsburgh Post to Gazette. We know our goal, not just to get to the playoffs, but when we get there to make noise to win and go to the Super Bowl, but there definitely is extra added motivation to send eight out the right
way. And one more piece of news for you, Chef D reporting this morning to a tongue of Iloa has been named the Falcon starting QB for the opener against those Pittsburgh Steelers. That is the league we've gone around it. Thanks for listening to that DPA hero and Rothenberg podcast. All right, bye bye.
