Jackson Merrill's Superstadom and Did Craig Stammen's MISTAKE Accidentally Lead to Padres SWEEP?

Greetings ladies and gentlemen, as always, I'm your host with sometimes the most aviere, reyes on today's episode. Mara Madness, some further criticisms of Craig Stamman, the Bika little boy there were many, and another supply for the off season to keep an eye on. But not before, we discuss what on the surface looks like a horrible start for what Sir Walker Beeler.

1:01But it's a lot more complicated than that. NDSJ's game in which the Padres do get the sweep 9 to 2. It is the no thanks to Walker Beeler, who only goes 2 and a third in this game, giving up 2 earn runs on 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 4. He does give up a home run as well. But here's the thing. Walker Beeler wasn't that bad in this game at all. And I know that the box score suggests otherwise. He got pulled after just 2 and a third at just 60 pitches. He was laboring a little bit, especially in that third inning. But it is more complicated that because, first of all, like I said, dealing with the first couple innings, he's got the strikeouts, he's looking great. And by the way, against a very good national's offense, aside from the home run. But then he has multiple hits drop that probably aren't his fault. Specifically, Jackson Merrill, who has a great game, we're going to praise him in just a second. But he has a little bit of a blooper that he missed times, that he probably could have got to. They bet you this on the broadcast too, if anybody was watching the broadcast I imagine you were,

2:06that Don and Mud both bet you this like, it was a really not all that hard hit of a ball. In that third inning, it was a single by I believe it was a Dylan Cruz. And I had to expect the batting average of just 200, right? It was a little bit of a blooper, wasn't hit particularly hard. And that's my thing is he got a little bit lucky in that regard. And then with the bases loaded, what happens? He gets a fly ball from Dylan Cruz, who then. Or whoever was the next batter, I'm stepping over my words right now. He gets a fly ball and then Jace Bowen stumbles in the outfield, allowing the ball to land, right? Then he gets a one one more out after that, but. And then he gets pulled, which we'll talk about one second, but that's already like, this is not a Walker beaver. What happened yesterday? That was bad defense by Jackson Merrill and especially by Jace Bowen. And then Craig Stamon makes a bone headed mistake. Accidentally, removing Walker beaver from the game. So how does that happen? You might be asking, well, I actually forgot this was a rule.

3:08That's how much of a rookie mistake this is that he didn't realize that Ruben Diabla was already out there. So when he came out there to see for a second mound visit, he realized Diabla was out there. That means that you have to that he has to exit the game or whatnot. And the beaver walked off the mound himself. Stamon clearly didn't notice it in the moment. So yeah, rookie bone head move by Craig Stamon, but I will say was it accidentally really clutch? Because then how hard goes two and a thirds innings giving up no hits, no walks, no runs, and just getting one strike out how hard kind of the savior of yesterday's game in a lot of ways. So shout out to him. Showing up big time for this team. Also shout out to the rest of the bull pedigrific can and comes in to end this one. Wadi Peralta goes two innings as they go, Betty runs gets two K's. But for the most part, it's just very funny to be that Craig Stamon not only just continues to make mistakes, I think continues to have just absent minded errors that never happened under Mike Schilt or even Bob Melvin.

4:14It's just been a guy who's clearly still learning the ins and outs of being a manager. I like his energy, I like his experimentation, but unfortunately this year we have seen just too many mistakes. And this just adds on to it. So the cries for dismissing Stamon are not going to get any what's the word, I guess they're not going to get any quieter. They're not going to cease whatsoever in this one. But hey, I guess accidentally clutch, we love it because again, how hard to end up doing well there. But if I'm Walker Bueller, who of course takes the high road, he doesn't throw Stamon under the bus. He kind of dismisses it and dodges it in the post game afterwards. It's just good, good sticking up for your manager moment there. This is what happens, and you have a rookie. This is what happens. But I guess we could give him the accident, a clutch moment of yesterday's game. I think Bueller could have been fine too because again, the only reason that he was getting into trouble is because of some errors. Two of them by Padre's outfielders, specifically J. Spowe and being the bigger one.

5:14So maybe he could have battled out of that. We'll see if he bats his back in his next start. I hope he does because this is technically his worst start in a while, which by the way says something like Walker Bueller has been just a solid solid picture for this Padre's team that in another world, I wish could potentially come back next year, right? This is definitely his worst start probably since he gave up seven against the debacks back in July or when he only left two against Toronto the next week. Right. He's been he's been pretty solid. I really think that this game though was it wasn't on him. Next though, it's all about offense, baby. It's all about the offense because Jackson barrel goes absolutely nuts in this game. Four for five with two home runs six RBI's on the day. He also draws a triple in this game, which partially was due to a set of fields error. I guess you could call it that was it actually scored it error. I mean, actually check out that looked that up beforehand. It was it looks like it was not a scored it error instead.

6:17It was the throw away that the the guy who threw it to first base, I believe that messed up Kent. But Maryland this game the six RBI's the two home runs. I mean, he's been unbelievable. This also goes three for five in this game. He gets an RBI as well. Another three hit game for him. Ty France goes three for five within RBI. Austin Hayes actually has a good game. We were just complaining about it the other day for pitch hitting for Jake Carter worth two for two. And this one, some I tailor gets an RBI a but right. That was really, really fun. Love to see that. But all in all, this is about Taty's and Merrill. Two guys that are clearly going to be the faces of this franchise for years to come. They need them to be faces of this franchise for years to come. But what I'm seeing from Jack's Merrill is although he does have some at bats that are frustrating. He doesn't see enough pitches. He swings at everything. This is one of the best bat to ball guys in Major League Baseball. What he's able to do no matter where you throw the ball, turn that into a hit and turn it into hits for power and extra bases playing great center field.

7:23All that sort of stuff. Both Taty's and Merrill in the second half. Let me read you their numbers. In the second half so far of 2026, Jack's Merrill is slashing 292, 329 on base and a 583 slug. That's a 147 WRT plus and he's fifth in war wins above replacement. And then Taty's he's slashing in the second half 299, 372 on base, 593 slug. That's good for a 167 WRC plus and he is fourth in wins above replacement among all positional players in the second half. Only Aillard, Ellie Delecruz, Alex Breggman and Mr. P. Carrobstrog, the likely MVP have been better. Again, it's it's Jackson Merrill didn't even have to be this good for me to be optimistic about the future. But he's been so good that the first half almost looks more like a fluke. He's been so much more aggressive at the play just buying into who he is and then Taty has looked like the version that we saw in 2020 and 2021. Not just a good player but an MVP quality bat.

8:24That's what we have seen from both of them and I couldn't be more thrilled for the offense. Don't get me wrong. Some blue bobbets, the outfielder who is like a cat, catch barrels ball. But then you have all the other hits. You have the two home runs and with Taty's he's just been able to be one of the best lead off players in baseball and remains one of the most weirdly criticized players. And at sometimes underrated player just because I think people forget that even his version of himself last year, which was a pretty good at that with elite defense is still a top 10 player in baseball. And Jackson Merrill he's making a case for a top 20 player in Major League baseball and has the potential to be a top 10 to that's how good they've looked in the second half. I am all the way in this is not a fluke. This is not just a hot stretch. We got ourselves a real dynamic duo. But I'm not done talking about yesterday's game because there was something else somehow that Craig Stamford did aside from the walker billier mistake that's worth critiquing. And if you're an everyday listener, you might know what I'm referring to.

Let's talk about the other thing that had issue with Craig Stamon yesterday great offense and maybe we could sidestep the Walker bill or think maybe he accidentally is a Freudian slip in sub form. Accidentally moving Walker bill or because that it ended up working for Calhart. I guess Freudian slip is at the right terms to use there but just just stick with me just stick with me. J Krunoworth isn't in the lineup yesterday. Cool. They don't hit him number two. I have been campaigning for this for a couple weeks now and it's I'm not like angry angry. But it is so similar to last year with Mike Schill refusing to move Luis arise in the lineup border.

11:30Luis arise much better that J Krunoworth has been this year including the bad version of him that we saw last year and including frankly the version of Luis arise that we see ever since the trade deadline when he got said to fill it. But my issue with him last year was always I just didn't like that we had this guy who is going to swing it all these pitches as your number two bat right after tattoos. It just makes it more of a not as much of an issue if you put tattoos on first base at least in my opinion. And J Krunoworth is at least different in that respect that he doesn't swing it every pitch. But I just didn't think he was a quality number two hitter and there's been multiple times in which they have pinch hit for him. Later on in the game and to me good baseball teams do not find themselves in position where they are pinch hitting their number two hitter is it sometimes maybe in certain certain scenarios where it's not necessary the fastest player that's your number two and maybe you pinch run for them sure but that's very rare very very rare. I just don't think that there are many playoff teams that end up being in that situation the braves don't pitch it for Michael Harris the Dodgers aren't going to pitch it for a bookie bets.

12:38I don't know their lineup order but you get me or Andy Pahas whoever their top of the order is. And the Padres keep doing that with J Krunoworth yesterday's game I just say two days ago now it with the bases loaded you bring in Austin Hayes who hasn't been all that great for them. I know he had a two game yesterday but still. So what do they do looks like he changed that j Krunoworth not that number two and instead it's zander bow guards who look in a vacuum sure he goes one for four yes she does have a single and he does have a walk cool that's that's fine I guess right like if you want to limit our sample size to just oh cool he was able to get singles and walks sure I guess I don't mind having bow guards. Up there instead of j Krunoworth because j Krunoworth is not walking he's just he's genuinely been a pretty egregiously bad player this year because the defense hasn't been there he hasn't been able to add all that much with the bat hasn't been walking enough as much as he was last year and I guess you could argue in September so far for zander bow guards he's been a little bit better than the past few months.

13:47And so just getting on base right he has an 88 WRC plus okay but that's not very good right like he has a 387 on base percentage that's what I think we're looking at here but just a 240 slug so he's been bad but maybe salmon said okay but I'm getting a version of what I got from Krunoworth last year more so with zander because he could draw more walks okay. And of course what is he doing his first plate appearance after being moved up to second for the first time in months it feels like by the way I think months immediately grounds into a double play. My criticism with this has less to do with zander bow guards than it is I just don't understand why some odd Taylor is at the guy who picks up a but single in this game. That leads to an error right because he was just trying to get a bunch but with his speed he's the one that can outrun those sometimes and it kind of speaks to what I. Have been preaching on this podcast about some of Taylor being a little bit of a spark plug every time he puts the ball in play it's a fire drill there's a little bit of panic because of his speed he also walks a lot and his expected batting average is actually quite high.

14:52In terms of just right now could that go down if he plays more games absolutely this is not a high ceiling prospect this isn't a highly regarded prospect he's got to expect a bad day of just to 57 that's not all that incredible right I don't think some on Taylor is great but I do think that he's discerned deserved a little bit more of a look because I think that putting him up there potentially could be better for Fernando Tete's junior I just think that with those two guys on the base paths now all of a sudden you have to deal with many in France and then you go back to another speedster in Jackson Merrill I would just prefer giving some on Taylor more of a shot I think it's weird that some on Taylor has performed better than Jake Runawerth and to some degree better than Zander Boeckarts at least when it comes to just putting bats ball then Santa Boeckarts this year he's a faster player than Zander Boeckarts but of course he is coming back off the aisle so maybe that's the counter for this is saying you know what he just came back off the aisle he been out for a little bit we're not ready to put him in the high responsibility the second spot his advanced metrics don't look great I understand that but by the

15:58mind is he keeps having moments like he did yesterday and I don't like that all it seems to have taken was Zander Boeckarts walking a decent amount this month with no extra base hits he's only slugging to 40 and all it took was a few walks through just nine days in September for him to immediately earn that number two spot in the lineup order I just would rather try out some odd Taylor their first before Boeckarts I don't hate Boeckarts over coronavirus I do think that that is a better decision having Boeckarts in there instead of coronavirus and then maybe Jake Runawerth at the bottom line of can do a little bit better I don't know he's just he's just been horrid this year but it's just a little bit frustrating to me at least to me but of course Craig Stamman all in all I mean I think it's also sometimes just hard for me to kill the guy and get super mad at him call him a worthless manager ask for him to be fired for a couple reasons number one there are some things I've liked there are some things I've liked I like that he experiments I really do this has been a very stagnant

17:03team for years now that it gets a little bit to little bit to rigid a little bit to headstrong when it comes to managers and what they do but they're also more prepared but even still the next point I have is I like that Craig Stamman is not just doing new things but he also I think represents just a different style it is more it is cool that they brought in someone young and different instead of just the old old heads that they bring in previous years I think that that is an admirable quality whatnot but number three which is the biggest reason I can't be mad at Craig Stamman is because he's a rookie manager and I can't expect too much from a guy like that a guy who doesn't have managing experience if you want to be mad at someone about Craig Stamman it's got to be AJ Preller if you want to be mad at someone with the offense sure you can bring up that it has never been or at least it's it's better now but in the first half it had never been worse

18:03Then it was under Craig Stamman and Steven Susers Jr. If you want to bring the bat heading coach but on some level the guy's got to hit He can't entirely control that So that's why I'm not all that just frustrated with Craig Stamman I just think that he's a rookie guy who experiments Sometimes for the bad oftentimes maybe even for worse but at least he's trying And he's a rookie and it's not always his fault that players do Poor things like don't don't get me wrong. I don't like the decisions they've had over the last couple weeks with the bunting situations and high leverage shots But they could also just maybe not pop out at least You know like I that's like that I grew the decision to buy but maybe don't pop out every time That's not like that crazy even asked from your manager But at the same time he has made a lot of mistakes. I am very curious to see what happens if they Don't make it to the playoffs, which they are now a half game up on Arizona. We'll see how that goes. I'm curious what happens

19:08If they don't make the playoffs and whether or not they try to move on from someone Particularly Craig Stamman and maybe that has to do a little bit with the ownership saying we wanted a new guy We want a big sexy name. We'll see we don't know But that's just why I don't have the the I'm not vociferously like I don't have the vitriol the real hatred for Craig Stamman The way or frustration like rage that I've had towards him versus many other people in Padres managing Leadership or certainly players over the years that I've been hosted this podcast which just it's funny On all lowercase g good series for the Padres I say that because they did get a little bit lucky and some things was almost a little bit reverse a little bit of a reverse of the race series Where they got crazy unlucky with the injury with the Samad Taylor drop all that sort of stuff I say that because they did get a little bit lucky on a couple things in this series in their favor, which we'll take you know Tuesdays rb i single for many match i was right up the middle 140 expected batting average

I was thinking about the other day and I thought about it because you keep my two-minute appearance One that wasn't good one that was solid yesterday eight pitches

23:18Which is get it retiring the entire side for the natural is again a good offense So love to see that from him He's having a pretty dang good season you keep not so it reminded me This padricks bull pet has some question marks and I think that the question marks actually Are quite interesting and what it is is basically they've got Some issues potentially with keeping this bull pet together which has been the big reason for why they've been able to be good this year frankly It's the biggest week biggest reason But Jason Adam who is working his way back and reportedly could be joining the team soon I actually wouldn't be surprised if that's by next week he has unfortunately had kind of an injury Riddled season in a lot of ways but he played like catch on Monday back in August like he's been throwing it a little bit more I think he could return at least by the end of the season So you have him who has been a really solid reliever for the padricks He was awesome last year was an all-star and year before that He was a fringe all-star as well

24:20So you might be losing him You're you might be losing Adrian Monahon who has been Sensational if you actually look at this year when it comes to pitching The major league leaders in wins above replacement and a lot of the the advanced stats I think when it comes to relief pitching He has been obviously behind Basin Miller right Mason Miller's worth apparently 3.4 wins above placement which is nuts But he is fourth in war now I don't always like using war for pitchers because I think that it Is treating too much of the hypothetical towards what you contributed to this year I don't mind fit though and fit wise he's been phenomenal Like he is 13th in major league baseball He has as many strikeouts as you could possibly ask for he is very very good He's been at least by war one of the most valuable relievers in baseball and then you have based on Miller to Yes, he's had at points some frustrating moments right he has

25:22His moments every now and again, but overall this has still been a Relief pitcher that you are going to want to have on your team And he's a free agent and if I'm a manager of another team He could potentially be a closer for a lot of other teams He's got a 29% strikeout rate just a 7.5% walk rate which is really good His ERA is at 2.86 this year and he's got a 5 of 2.42 So he has had some bad blowups. He's been overall pretty dang good And by the way, he has the resume last year 2.08 ERA you're and also a 5 of 2.28 you're before that 2.83 ERA with a 5 of 2.79 And I think that it also will matter for managers and people prospective buyers that his strikeout weight went down last year After it spiking heavily and being great in 2024 is first full year kind of as a reliever Then the strikeout right down. Don't worry. Went right back up this year last year clearly an outlier So they've got three guys Or two guys that I just mentioned that are going to be free agents

26:23They also might have Yuki Matsui be a free agent He's got an opt out after this year for two years 13.5 million that are remaining on his contract Will he opt out is an important question And if he does that is a piece that is part of this hydra's bullpen because he has actually produced pretty okay this year It's a 2.05 ERA now And also by the way 26.7% strikeout rate now the difference though with Yuki Matsui is that unlike a Asia monohon his peripherals aren't quite as good I still think he's good but not quite as good the biggest reason is because he has a 4.31 fit compared to his current ERA Now here's the thing does that mean that he's due for massive regression Not massive, but it probably means that he's more of a 3 ERA guy He gets a lot of strikeouts which makes up for it But he does walk a lot of bad. This is the highest walk rate of his career so far And it's gone up each year 10% is what rook year which is a very good Then 12% last year, which is very very bad and his strikeout rate went down

27:24And while he got the strikeouts back up this year He gets a lot of swing and miss for sure he has a 13.8% walk rate this year That's really bad and his home run 5 ball rate is the lowest of his career as well 9.6% and he doesn't put the ball on the ground 31.3% ground ball rate In some ways the advanced metrics like him a lot better his rookie year when he had 3.73 ERA Then this year because his rookie year he was putting the ball on the ground a lot more And wasn't walking near as many badders He just gave up home runs and add a lot of blowups at the worst spots So that's my thing with those peripherals Is there a team out there that could go and pay you keima tsui more than the two years 13 million left on his contract I'm not sure it's gonna depend on what teams want because people like throwing a decent amount of money at relievers He's not gonna get paid what you think is associated with a sub three sub two five ERA Which is usually top dollar no that's an age you're more to haunt type of thing And certainly may similar when he becomes a free agent in three years

28:25Um Not the case with the keima tsui But if he does opt out that's three important players that you will be losing from this bullpen And I raise all this to say what will the padricks do will they just say now we good we got Alex Jacob We bring in Morgan every now and then we've still got Mason Miller Um, and we've got Brad Glee Rodriguez who has been who's been phenomenal this year genuinely He had that one blow up against the raise which is a little bit fluky because of the Renifo injury And other than that he's been just nails the whole whole friggin year man that guy's been awesome um So What will they do I think will they try to keep age your board of hood? I imagine they'd like to and I'm wondering if Him talking about before the deadline his last game pitching with the Padres before deadline He's pumped and in the locker room being like yeah man I want to do whatever it takes to to kind of win here I wonder a little bit if he tipped his hand Basically being like yeah, he's gonna really try and resign with the Padres he likes being here We'll see we'll see But this is also because of all these question marks not gonna lie guys

29:27Take it a while take it a long long time and I stand by by reasoning for it, but This is also a quiet case in favor of them keeping Mason Miller um Because if you don't have Mason Miller Next year you're like oh god what do we do with this bullpen? It can go for being the best in baseball to being Quite poor very very quickly if you're not careful because I like Riley Rodriguez was he ready to be a closer We don't know I love Jeremiah stride a lot in his talent, but he's been shaky particularly with his control and has been hurt a lot So I'm just curious what will they do? I think there's a better chance that they try to keep a lower tier ERA or that might be a Better decision because that's what they've been doing for a few years now is letting the guys walk Before they get paid a lot of money and spending elsewhere because yes, Aja Mora Hona has been awesome But I think that they have a lot of faith and guys like Jeremiah strata and certainly Bradley Rodriguez and obviously Mason Miller

30:28So This might be a quiet case though in favor of keeping billers because of all these guys that are leaving and another side note Y'all though I have been critiquing the trade for a while, but Leo de Vries is undergoing shoulder surgery and it's expected to be out Of sideline for at least eight months before resuming activity Padres might have dodged a bullet there Um, I still think Leo de Vries is a top tier level prospect. He's a top 10 prospect faith by basically every single system and major league baseball every single um You know analyst that you follow has him as a top five prospect at baseball and he's still super young that this isn't going to end his ceiling But not gonna lie I saw that news that I was like maybe this is try to tell me something Hopefully he gets back. It is a great player for the A's but Maybe it's try to tell me hey bad ease up on your whole. We shouldn't have done that trade thing Mason Miller's been great. I'm curious to see how much things change Uh, but overall keep an eye on that for the offseason. What do they do and what do you think they should do? Should they be like let's spend whatever it takes to keep Mora Hona together that way
