PADRES POSTCAST: Merrill's Career Day Powers Padres EXPLOSION- 16 Hits, Sweep of Nationals, WC Tie
About this episode
Locked On Padres - Daily Podcast On The San Diego Padres is made possible by:
Jackson Merrill delivered a career day, the San Diego Padres offense erupted for 16 hits, and the Friars finished off a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals with a dominant 9-2 victory at Petco Park.
Merrill was sensational, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, a triple, two runs scored and a career-high six RBI. His two-run triple gave San Diego the lead in the third inning, he added a two-run homer in the fifth, another homer in the seventh and capped his monster afternoon with an RBI single in the eighth.
The entire Padres lineup joined the party. San Diego finished with 16 hits and went 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position, getting three-hit games from Fernando Tatis Jr. and Ty France as the Padres scored in five different innings.
And after Walker Buehler lasted only 2⅓ innings, the bullpen completely took over. Kyle Hart led a dominant relief effort as San Diego’s bullpen threw 6⅔ scoreless innings while allowing just one hit the rest of the way.
The win completes the sweep, moves the Padres to 78-68, and pulls San Diego even with Arizona for a National League Wild Card position before the Diamondbacks play later.
We break down Merrill’s historic offensive day, the 16-hit attack, the bullpen’s incredible rescue job, the three-run third-inning turning point, and what this sweep means for the Padres’ September playoff push.
Padres 9, Nationals 2. Brooms out in San Diego.

Four hits, two home runs, a triple and a career high. Six RBI's. The Rodgers are up for nine runs, 16 hits to complete the sweep of Washington and the bullpen phenomenal today as well. Nine two Padres and man, oh man, as we hit the airwaves right now, your San Diego Padres are tied for the third and final wild cards pop with Diamondbacks just three games and three and a half games behind the Phillies and the Cubs. Respectively, this race is getting tight. This is your Padres Postcast and it starts right now. This is the Padres Postcast, your instant game reaction for the San Diego Padres.
Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Oh baby, what a game. Jim Greesa, McCormie, Grease, GRIES, action grease underscore on social media. Give me a follow, make you a hollow. The furry makes its return because it's a sweep. Another big win for the Pods, another comeback win, even though they were down to nothing early in this game, but they score three in the bottom half and they just keep on erupting from there. What a game for the Padres. Today's episode is brought to you by Game Time, download the Game Time App, create an account, use the code Lockdown for 20 bucks off your first purchase. Jackson Merrill, four for five, two home runs, two home runs. I repeat again, two home runs for Merrill. A career high six RBI's with a triple as well, two runs scored just a double shy of the cycle, 16 hits for the Padres, five for 10 with runners in scoring position, Fernando Tati's junior, his second three hit game of the series, I see London, I see Ty France, three for five, a big day for Austin Hayes, who went two for two, some Montaille or two
for four, and the bullpen was absolutely fantastic today. Big job by the bullpen Walker-Bueller, last only two and a third. The bullpen allows one hit and no runs over six and two thirds innings. That hit was in the top of the eighth inning. Think about it and it was no Miller, no Montaille home. You know what I'm saying? It was not the usual suspects. It was Kyle blaming on my wild heart, the star of the show out of the pen today, the sweep's complete. Padres continue to build September momentum and they pull even with Arizona for the third and final wild card spot. This is what you'll be talking about. I'm into today trying to do something good teams have to do in September. Finish off a bad team. You got them on the ropes. That was a terrible loss for Washington last night. There's no way around it, right? Great win for the Padres, scoring five runs in the last two innings of the game, four, right, in the bottom of the eighth inning to take that dub and finish it off. So a terrible loss for the Nats last night.
The opener wasn't much better, but today they did it emphatically. The pods did they stomp on the throat of the wounded opponent, but it sure didn't start that way. Walker Bueller started off really well in the first inning. I think Vasquez should be in the rotation instead of Bueller. I know Stamman probably falls in love with Bueller's postseason experience, but he's not the same guy after the surgery. I don't know. With Pavetta back, though, you have options. I don't know about Randy out of the bullpen as much and I don't even know if I put Bueller on the postseason roster. I mean, I'll get into that later on. It's a hobby thing too. But man, three straight strikeouts in the first, but by the third, it all started to fall apart when Kibbutt Ruiz launched a 400-toothwood homer. I'll see Nunez Walks steal second, Jacob Young singles, Wood Walks, Cruise singles, home another, Tuzip Washington takes the lead right away in that third inning and you're thinking, oh, man, Bueller's done after two and a third, three hits, two runs, two walks, four strikeouts, 60 pitches, Kyle Hart came in, right? And Stamman had walked out. He was going to take Kyle Hart out earlier in the inning.
He decided to leave him in. He second-guessed himself at the press conference again today, but the response was there from the Padres and it was immediate today, right? Bottom of the third. As soon as the nationals take the two nothing lead and you're going, oh, they're going to have to come from behind again. They didn't wait very long. Time to reveal where the game was once or lost. It's the turning point. Fernando Tati's junior who had three hits today gets on base to start the third inning, right? And you're looking at it, you're going, Fernando's been doing that all series long, just been phenomenal, right? And it was Fernando Tati's junior. I'm sorry, not the third, the second inning. I don't know why I keep saying the third. It was the second inning when the Natto's two nothing lead and the Padres came back and scored three, right? They're down to nothing and they hit the bottom of the second inning. Wait a second. What am I doing here? No. Oh, never mind. I lost my place, guys. I'm sorry. It never happens, but just bear with me for that bow and reaching a bow and strikes out.
That was the throw me off right there. Fernando reaches on an infield single, one of three hits today for him. Bogart's flies out two away, but Manny walks first and second two hours. How many times have they not come through in that situation this season? Well, not this time. Ty France singles to left scoring Fernando. Merrill triples to right, scoring Manny and France to make it three, two, three runs, three hits. So errors and you take the lead just like that after giving it up and it's three, two and Kyle Hart just dealing one, two, three in the top of the fourth inning and then comes the bottom of the fourth, right? Hayes singles to left. Taylor reaches on a bunch single, Bowen with a sacrifice, Bunt to first base. You know what I'm saying? And by the way, Hayes had scored on a throwing error by the pitcher Kent on the previous play, but Taylor ends up on third on Bowen's sack, Bunt. Tis with a single to left. Taylor scores. It's five, two, two runs, three hits, one error. Top of the fifth, Kyle Hart gets the first two hitters. Morgan comes in, walks a guy and then gets the final out. Bottom of the fifth, Jackson Merrill after a tie, France lead off double with the first
of two homers on the day, makes it seven, two, two runs on three hits. They were not done, but the nationals were at that point. Matsui pitching in the game after that because after Hart and Morgan, Matsui with a scoreless inning, beautiful job by Yuki. Then, you know, the Padres don't score in the sixth. Top of the seventh, Wande comes in, gets them one, two, three. Bottom of the seventh for the pods, Merrill leads off with a homer. It's eight, two. Top of the eighth for the nationals, a lead off single for wood. The first hit of the game for the nationals after that second inning came in the eighth inning. In the eighth, that's how good the bullpen was. And remember, it was Hart, it was Morgan, it was Matsui, it was Peralta, it was not Marihone, it was not Miller, it was not any of those guys, man, it was not. But man, oh man, bottom of the eighth, Merrill with an infield single, Bogart scores, and that makes it nine, two, one run on three hits there. Then Griffin canning, of course, had to get it on the act. Yeah, one, two, three, and the ninth, including a lead off of Tennis.
So beautiful job by that bullpen. And again, let me repeat, okay, this is the scoreless bullpen today. So you got seven innings of scoreless baseball, seven and two thirds, right? Wait, did I get that right? Two thirds, five and two thirds, six and two thirds, scoreless innings for the bullpen today after. Two and a third from Bueller, three hits, two on runs, two walks, four strikeouts, 60 pitches, not a good outing at all for Bueller, anyone, Walker, San Diego Ranger, right? But Kyle Hart, two and a third scoreless innings. Morgan with a third of an inning, Matsui with an inning, Peralta with an inning, and two strikeouts in Canning, a scoreless inning that eight strikeouts, man, and they only gave up four hits total today. But how about on offense, the Padres, they were five for ten with runners in scoring position. Fernando had three hits, Frans had three, Pays had two, Taylor had two, and of course, Merrill went four for five with six RBI's, two runs scored, and two home runs. All right, Padres with a big win, nine two, they complete the sweep, they're tied with the debacks for the third Wild Card spot, put their only three and three
and a half games behind the top two teams respectively. And imagine if the Padres hadn't had that little scuff last week, they'd be sitting pretty, maybe in first place by now, but better late than never, they finished off the sweep. Now you go to San Francisco, then you got Colorado on the road, you got a chance to get a bunch of wins here before the Dodgers come in, and then the debags to finish the season. And they just made a really good point on the post game show with with mud and scan. And they said, or Mary Louise and scan. And they said, hey, you know, scan said, you know, when you think about it, the Dodgers might be resting players in that series. And you might get a Dodger team that's, you know, Otani's banged up, guys, bets and freemen, they're all getting older, their rotations had injuries all year. You might get a Dodger team that's kind of resting guys getting ready for the playoffs. This is your Padres postcast, nine two, the win, still to come, the player, the game, still to come, the X factor, still to come, much, much more than that. The wild card update. And of course, we'll get you ready for the giants coming up on Friday with the day off tomorrow.

Indeed.com slash podcast turns from this is a plan. You don't hire this isn't a job for Indeed Sponsored. Jobs and it's a job for me to rewrite the copy because no one knows how to write a one minute spot around here. I'm losing my mind. I've always had it done for me. Here they want us to do it. I guess all this have to rewrite them is what it is. We can't be having these five minute breaks when there's three spots. It's crazy. Not after a game like this. Nine two Padres three games sweep.
Merrill Madness Jackson. Merrill four hits two homers. A double shy of the cycle. A career high six RBI's. Fernando three hits. France three hits. Taylor with two. Hayes with two. Sixteen in total for the pods five for ten with runners in the scoring position. The bullpen six and two third scoreless sending's allowing one hit. And it was Kyle Hart. It was David Morgan. It was Yuki Matsui. It was Wande Peralta. And it was Griffin Canning. How about that right there man. I'll tell you what what a performance by the Padres today to finish off the sweep. And we got to get to a couple things because they also want us to hit a time limit. If you want to say the time limit. Write the spots shorter. All right, here we go. You ready? And go. This is the lock done player of the game. This would be today four for six. Six runs driven in a career high. A double shy of the cycle. Usually the triples one that you don't get. Right, but Merrill four for five today
with two runs scored six RBI's. The two home runs went seven for 12 in the series. Fernando a close second three hits. Today is second three hit game of the series. Ty France deserves consideration. As well, but Jackson Merrill is the player of the game, which leads me to we have two to lead to. It's time to reveal who made the biggest under the radar impact with today's X factor. Number one's the offense man. Oh, we've been waiting for this version all year. Have we not nine runs 16 hits five for 10 with the runs in scoring position. Fernando three for five with an RBI. France three for five double two runs in an RBI. Austin Hayes two for two. So Mod Taylor two for four. Merrill went nuclear. It wasn't one inning in disappear. They scored three in the third two in the fourth two in the fifth one in the seventh one in the eighth nine on 16 hits overall. Pressure pressure pressure for the offense. But they're not the only X factor today. How could they be when the bullpen was so great? Right, Bueller only gets seven outs. Bueller anyone anyone. So the bullpen has to cover 20 outs.
And what do they do? Six and two thirds. One hit. No runs. One walk four strikeouts. Kyle Hart was magnificent two and a third. Nothing burger for Kyle Hart. That means they got nothing off of him. Then Morgan gave you a third inning. Matsui gave you a scoreless inning. Paralto gives you two scoreless and Griffin canning finishes it off with get this. A perfect ninth inning. Washington's first and only bullpen hit didn't come until James would let off the eighth inning. That is ridiculous work, which leads us to not such ridiculous work from one podry. Uh oh, somebody messed up and it's time to let him know with who fudged up. Walker Bueller had been pretty good lately, but two and a third 60 pitches three hits two walks two runs when they're trying to finalize this rotation. We still don't know if musk ropes coming back. Don't know if we really want to leave Randy in the bullpen. Bueller without really doing himself any favors today. Let's just say that he could have given them length in a game where they were trying to complete a sweep. But his teammates completely bailed him out.
Which leads me to since hindsight is always 2020. Let's deliver today's second guest. Stamman said it himself he should have taken Walker Bueller out earlier. He let him talk him into staying into the game. He talked himself into letting him stay in the game. And so the Stamman second guest is not taking Bueller out earlier and putting hard in. But you know, you can always second guess and manage his decision. We have fun with Stamman every day on the show and he does make some. Some choices that I just I'm just. You know what I'm saying and I think those are the voices he's hearing in his head as he makes them. But today was not one of those days. But this is why this sweep matters. Are you ready? Gather in round the computer screen or phone or wherever you used to say gather around the transistor. My guy Ron Wutley and Phoenix. But man, this is why the sweep matters. You're not just beating Washington in September for style points. You're chasing October. San Diego is 78 and 68 and they're even with the diamond backs for that wild car position. They're three and a half and three behind the Cubs and Phillies, right? Can't control Arizona.
Can't control Phillies. Can't control the Cubs. But either one of those teams could fade to and then you could be playing for a two or a one seed. Which I don't have to tell you is much better than a three. Hey, University of Miami. Shout out to her. Cains degree coming in handy. But man, you can control whether or not you sweep a team that came and struggling like the Nats did. Coming back from that deficit yesterday. Score those five in the last two innings and winning that game. That's the kind of victory that can propel a team onto a hot streak. You got two teams coming up now in the Giants in the Rockies who are prone to getting their ass whipped. You need to go and whoop their ass. That should be the close right there. But the Padres handled their business today once again. Beautiful job by your San Diego Padres. That's going to do it. Thank you for making us your first watch or listen today.
