PADRES POSTCAST: PADRES STUN NATIONALS! Manny's 2-Run Single Keys 4-Run 8th in Wild 5-4 Comeback Win
About this episode
Locked On Padres - Daily Podcast On The San Diego Padres is made possible by:
The San Diego Padres refused to go away — and pulled off another wild comeback when they absolutely needed it.
Trailing the Washington Nationals 4-1 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, San Diego exploded for four runs to steal a dramatic 5-4 victory, win the series and keep pace in the National League Wild Card race after the Arizona Diamondbacks had already won.
Manny Machado delivered the biggest at-bat of the night, battling through an eight-pitch plate appearance before ripping a two-run single up the middle to tie the game 4-4. After Ty France followed with a single, Luis Campusano dropped in the go-ahead RBI single, scoring Machado and completing the comeback.
The Padres had been held scoreless through six innings and managed just one run in the seventh before Washington pushed the lead back to three on Andrés Chaparro's eighth-inning home run. But the Nationals bullpen unraveled in the bottom half, including three consecutive walks from Jake Simpson without recording an out, and San Diego made Washington pay.
The victory gives the Padres their 11th comeback win of the season when trailing by three runs or more and adds another dramatic one-run victory to a growing list of late-game wins.
We break down Machado's monster moment, Campusano's game-winner, the four-run eighth, Casey Mize's start, the decision to bring Randy Vásquez into a bases-on situation, Washington's bullpen collapse, and what the win means for San Diego in the Wild Card race.
Padres 5, Nationals 4. Another comeback. Another one-run win. And another huge September victory.

Your team every day. We got the fri furry busted out tonight. We got a big one in the lamp. It's lit. I mean, it's after a holiday. We can everybody's dead tired of Tuesday that's a Monday and you just went after it hard all weekend. But man, the Padres making it fun down the stretch they come and don't forget they have the debags. The last three games of the season in PEDCO Jim Grease, Haber, Call me grease, GRIES at Jim Grease underscore. Give me a follow make you halla on social media. You see the fri furry big come back win for the pods tonight at PEDCO unbelievable. Manie, manie, why you bug any sitting like three 16 is last 10 games. He up that tonight, manie with a game time to run single in an eight pitch battle in the bottom of the eighth camp with Sano drops in. They go ahead RBI single by the way Harris with the sack fly pinch hitting for Chrome and worth a second guess. Damn it on that one tonight. That got the first run of the four in the eighth and they had second
and third with nobody out in the seventh and only got one run and then Matt Sui gives it right back on a home or anyway, we'll get into all that. But San Diego keeps pace with Arizona after the debacks that already won another one run. Run another late come back another reminder that this team is never out of a game and four out of five now for the Padres tonight's postcast is brought to you by the Fandall. Yes, yes, yes, yes, it's $350 and bonus pets guaranteed. When you bet $5 every day for seven days join all the action at Fandall dot com. This is what you'll be talking about. Ugly for a long time, Washington led one to nothing after a Morales home runoff Casey Mise in the second and Casey Mise was great tonight. We'll get to his numbers and not even the number of people who are in the game. The pitch was about six to eight inches inside off the plate and just took his hands in got around on
it and kind of like Aaron Boone against the Red Sox in game seven all those years ago just managed to keep it fair down the line. Beautiful job by Morales and the nationals can hit man. I'll tell you that and they had a bullpen game tonight. So you know, their starter goes three innings. The Padres don't get anything going to three perfect innings. They take him out. They're a tough on a team but they're late inning bullpen has been the bane of their existence all season long and it reared a tuggly head on the nets tonight. Think you know for the Padres. But nationals made it three to nothing in the six and you're thinking wow man, Doc say it's a rap. It's a rap the way the bats were going tonight because Casey Mise, you know, just had a little bit of trouble. CJ Abrams and Andre's Chapparewa on base and Brady House basing Randy Vasquez. Now it's very early for this. But I'mma just go ahead and do it now because I am and it's become such a staple in the show. So let's go and and an interesting factoid to go with the daily Stamman second guess.
Since hindsight is always 2020, let's deliver today's second guess. Oh boy, Craig Stamman second guessed himself in his press conference after the game because he knew it was coming. I'm kidding, but he second guess the same thing I did, which is taking Casey Mise out. Now look, you take Casey Mise out in the sixth inning and he's dealing at this point. He had just struck out a couple of guys the inning before. I mean, he had a little bit of trouble in this inning and we'll take you through a little bit more of this, although it's not necessarily necessary. Like what I did there. Anyway, you know what I'm saying? So it was the top of the sixth inning would grounds out or teased doubles to write members top of the order, right? Would grounds out or teased doubles to write. Crews strikes out swinging Abrams walks and he takes him out for Randy Vaskis. Now, to have a problem taking him out there, I actually do. Yes, I do have a problem taking him out there and that's, you know, obviously something that I would not have done. And Stamman said later, he let
him face one more hitter if he had the chance and maybe bringing Yuki or have him ready a little bit sooner and we'll get to that as well. But Randy is a guy who's been a starter all year long. You know what I'm saying? And Mise, by the way, five and two thirds, four hits, three or a run, ultimately, but at that point, only one seven strike outs in a walk only had thrown 90 pitches. Stamman said he had a little blister on his hand, but it's definitely the second guess, right? Definitely the second guess. You take him out there, you bring him Vaskis. The other part of the second guess is not just taking Mise out when he's dealing. It's also thinking about the fact that Vaskis is a starter. And the last time you screwed with him and had a couple of guys do a bullpen start and then brought him in relief. You messed up a hot streak and he got it going again. Now he's out of the rotation with Pavetta back. And the first time you bring a menu, you bring him in with two on like that, he gives a big wrapper in both runs scored. You know, the house doubles Abrams and Ortiz and it's three nothing, two runs on two hits and then Randy obviously did really well the next inning, but the Padres in the seventh inning, man. Machado singles to center, France singles to left first and second, nobody out. It would get worse.
Well, it looked like it was getting better, but it got worse. Believe me, when you get to the end of it, you'll understand. First and second, nobody out after the singles from many and France, you know, you might not be able to get another one out of the first and second, nobody out after the singles from many and France, and then a while pitch, they moved a second and third and what happens, all they get is a sack fly off the bat of Jackson Merrill. Now, Merrill, I mean, it was one of those crazy things in this game because second and third, they pitched to Merrill, second and third, they pitched to Fernando and second and third, they pitched to Manny. Merrill with a sack fly, Fernando walked and Manny with a two run single. They pitched to all three of the Padres stars in late game situations with first base open and no double play in order and no force. So think about that for a second, right? That's what they did with that bullpen and the bullpen is not very good. They're trying to baptize these guys by fire, I guess, but, you know, good job, by the way, by Beater after the Merrill sacrifice fly and he just missed a home run, one of five off the bat exit Velo to the track and Petco ready to explode. You could feel it, but oh, man, he just missed it.
Camposano fouls out to the catcher terrible at bat, called strike swings and one by his eyes, then he pops out behind the dish. He would make up for it later and then hair strikes out swinging. He would also make up for it later. But if you think the Padres are at least starting to chip away, think again, top of the eighth inning, Shapiro Homer's to left off Matsui makes it four to one and there you have it right there. And that's what it was through the top of the eighth inning and we will pick it up there when we come back after this limited break. And then we'll see what we do with the ball. And then we'll see what we do with the ball. And then we'll see what we do with the ball. And then we'll see what it was through the top of the eighth inning. For sure. And then there you have the third inning. But if you think that's what we do, I mean, good. And then we'll see what you do with the balance of the at least right there when we come back after this limited break from our friends at Amazon Gimgreece, Hover Call me greased, this is your Padres Postcast on V number one sports podcast network, the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team, your pods, your fryers every day, five four of the final eighth inning. Four runs come across for the Padres.
They scored all five of their pace with the diamond back still not in that last wild card spot, but still only a half game out. Remember when they were losing last week in the diamond backs for losing to will now they're winning and the dimebacks are winning too. You got to love the race down the stretch. We're live on YouTube. Then we upload you download Amazon Spotify Apple I heart, Stitcher, pod bean and of course you down with OTT. Yeah, you know me, Roku smart TV, Techno share. We are everywhere and we are about to be a lot more places coming up here soon. They want to make tell you and I'm such a big mouth. I want to. Hey, good things come to those who wait. Let's take the break. We come back with a player of the game, the X factor who fudged up and of course we get you ready for the series finale tomorrow. Could it be a sweep? You got the giants and the Rockies after this perfect time for the Padres to make a run. It's Greece. It's the postcast. Keep it here after this limited break from Amazon. We keep it rolling with your postcast. And there we have it.
A big thank you to our friends at Amazon for this limited break Jeff Bezos and company. Thank you very much and thank you for everything you do. I literally am an Amazon addict. I don't know about you. I get all my groceries from Whole Foods. I get the Amazon grocery free delivery. I have Amazon Prime. The only TV I haven't really watched is Amazon. Of course those NFL Thursday night games are on there, right? So you got to love everything they're doing, but this back to school season specifically spend less on your kids with Amazon. We all know how crazy the back to school shopping experience can be, right? It starts with you items on the list. Then suddenly your shopping for supplies, clothes, lunch gear, tech, and about 10 other things you didn't see coming. It adds up fast. And of course when you have three kids like I do, they always want to keep up with the Joneses. You know what I'm saying? When your kids definition of need for back to school shopping is a lot different than your definition of need. Somehow the list keeps getting longer every time they look at it. It's like, yo, you don't need a spaceship. Explaining the need versus want conundrum this time of year has just become an annual part of the process like, you know, impressing their friends and all that.
And then you get to the card total and you're like, you start shopping for a few back to school essentials. Then quickly you realize the list is growing. Oh my God. No supplies, clothes, lunch gear, headphones, money, money, money. It just keeps going. That's why finding low prices on all the things you need makes such a big difference this time of year. So remember the 21st, not a September. It's almost a 21st, not a September. But remember with Amazon's low back to school prices, just spend less on your kids because every dollar you don't spend on them is a dollar you haven't spent on them. And as a guy who raised three, that's like 900 grand right there. Every dollar matter. Shop back to school at Amazon. Spend less on your kids with Amazon on the locked on podcast network. Your team, your pods, your friars, the furries out every day. And I should correct myself there. The furries not out every day. The furries out when the pods do something amazing like a sweep or a big comeback. 11th time this season, down three runs or more, they come back and another late in and
come back. Two of those categories right there where the pods have been the best in baseball. And you know, Mani Machado said it on the field after the game. His tying single, game tying single in the eighth made it four four by the way. Harris with the sack fly, Mani the two run single and Camposano with the bloop single to put him ahead. Morday home the clothes tonight in the save his fourth of the year with Mason Miller unavailable. Matt Sui gave up a homer, but he did a decent job. Morgan got a big out. You know what I mean? Vazquez came back from that one inning when he gave up the big hit and the two runs were charged to Mise and he did all right. You know, and the bullpen was good. But Casey Mise, five and two thirds really should have only given up that one run. Gave up three because Vazquez came in and gave up the two run double. But it just was what it was. No, Mani two for three, two RBI's two runs scored tonight. Also had a walk on base three times. He's at like three 80s, last 10 games. Now France had two hits tonight. Camposano had two with the game winning RBI and pitching wise. I told you about Mise already Vazquez and inning in a third.
One hit, no runs two strikeouts. The two run double that he gave up. They were both charged to Mise who gave up three over five and two thirds should have been one. Stamman already second guest himself. We did it earlier in the show. And when the managers agreeing with you in second guessing himself preemptively before you do it, winning. Anyway, he has no idea who I am or what I said, but I'm just having fun with it. So Matsui two thirds of it and he gives up a homer and another hit. But a big strikeout in an 11 pitch outing Morgan goes a third of it and he comes in gets a big out to get out of Matsui's jam with runner on third and two away. And then Maude Hone bouncing back with a beautiful scoreless ninth. And you were thinking for a couple days or maybe you weren't, but I was. Then Maude Hone might be getting a little used up right now. And good news on that front with Jason Adam ready to start throwing. This week either in San Diego possibly in San Francisco when they play the giants, but then maybe next week when they play in Miami, it depends must grove not really having the mobility or the range of motion in the arm after the starts yet. He's been good and he's been fine in his rehab starts. And Andrew Harb, by the way, is hitting the baseball in his rehab assignment.
So you might get another bat back up here soon and you'll definitely have some choices to make come postseason. I don't think Salis is going to see the roster if they make it to be honest with you. But you know, he's had his cup of coffee and he's a young kid and you know, he gets a taste and then we'll bring him back when he's ready. But you know, we got a lot of stuff to do in a short time to do it in before we bounce. Like Mickey Mouse, let's start with the most important thing tonight. And that is time to reveal where the game was once or lost. It's the turning point. Man, you didn't think this was going to happen after that seventh inning when they had second and third and nobody out and they only get a run and then the bases loaded with one out and they only get a run and oh man, it was brutal. But it wasn't to be repeated in the eighth. Zander Bogart's leads off with a walk for Eddie for mean walks after that. While pitch moves them up and I'm talking this was a wild pitch that was so far out of the strike zone. It didn't bounce on the ground. The catcher just didn't even have a chance to catch it. He didn't even have a chance to catch it. So while pitch moves them up for Nando draws the walk.
Remember, they pitched to Merrill in the seventh with first base open, second and third. He had a sack fly out of the track, almost in a three run home or with first base open. Would have been catastrophic for the nets. Amazing for the pods. They pitched the Fernando here. He walks bases loaded. Nobody out Austin Hayes gets the sack fly. It's four to two and there's a runner on first and a runner on third because tagging and going to third, right? And there's the first third, but a wild pitch moves the runner up to second. And then man he pitch after pitch foul after foul didn't kill the ball. Bounces it up the middle. A one hopper barely gets over the pitchers head barely gets over his glove. He almost gloved it and man. Oh man, two run single to center. Look, you pitch to Merrill. You pitch to Fernando and you pitch to Mani with first base open and runners on second and third, three times. You're going to get burned. You're going to get burned. That's another second guest, but this isn't the nationals postcast. I'm sure that's theirs. You know that in the bullpen, but Mani, Mani, he is bugging big night tonight for him. Ty France follows with a single, you know, and then another big opportunity
after Merrill pops out for Camp Lusano, who's been the ladenning heroic sky lately. Remember he walked it off the other night against the yanks had the game winning, hitting the finale against the yanks that held up. Well, he does it again tonight, a two out bluepsyngle into right. And I'm talking the center fielders come in the right fielders come in the second base was coming out. It landed in the perfect spot between the three of them. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Mani scores from second. He's been doing a lot of that lately too. And it's five four Padres, pet goes electric, bring in the lefty. Give me more. I hone because ball game. That is it right there. That is our turning point tonight, which leads me to and you know what's coming next. Don't you? This is the lock down player of the game. All right, all right, all right. You know what's coming. You don't even know do you take some big and some pop can you mix them up in a pot, springing a little bit of mani machado, the player of the game. No debate for me to hits to our be eyes.
The two run single that ties the game. The run score. He also walked many, many two for three to run score to our be eyes. The walk the line doesn't tell the story. The eight pitch at bat and the eighth. That's the gamer. That's the veteran. That is the legendary mani machado down to runner's second and third. One out fouls off pitch after pitch against a tough reliever and he finishes it with a hard fought at bat. Just hits it hard and it finds a way bounces over the pitchers head. Very rarely can you hit it hard enough to hit a one hopper over the pitchers head that also gets through the shortstop in the second basement. I mean, you got to smoke that thing, right? Mani did that tonight ties the game veteran playoff at bat baseball. That's what wins in September and hopefully October for the Padres. Your player, the game, ladies and gentlemen, and everyone else, mani machado, which leads me to it's time to reveal who made the biggest under the radar impact with today's X factor. This would be a team award tonight. So the whole team come on up.
Let's go take a bow. You know what I'm saying? Because the San Diego Padres are never out of the game. They're at or near the top in all the comeback win categories in Major League baseball this year for a lot of reasons. The bullpen is incredible and they keep them in games, even when they're down three, one, four, one, three, nothing, two, nothing. The bullpen holds they did again tonight for the most part, right? Often's got them back tonight and that's the way it should be, but they are never out of a game, man. They're never out of a game. Not one player, the late game pressure and the comeback DNA. I got loyalty, got royalty in my DNA. I got comebacks inside my DNA. They kept forcing Washington to make pitches. They kept putting runners on. They drew walks. They advanced on wild pitches. They ran the bases flawlessly. They kept extending innings. They made the Nats bullpen keep working. They never took the pressure off. And then the whole thing cracked because that's what happens with pressure. It breaks pipes or it creates diamonds. Well tonight it broke the pipes and the Padres created a diamond.
Eleven come back wins this season when trailing by three runs or more. That's the X factor. And that leads me to the obvious for the next one. Slap a moto on me for a master of the obvious. Uh oh, somebody messed up and it's time to let him know with who fudged up. Oh boy, the nationals bullpen, the damage, very clear Jake Simpson, enters in the eighth phase three batters, boguards, walks for mean walks, Tatees walks three batters, three walks, zero outs. That's terrible. Then Ethan tomen enter stage center. Hayes with a sack fly. By the way, great job by Stan and pinch hitting Hayes for Kronor. And that spot Hayes comes through got the lefty ride. He match up waited until they brought the lefty into face Jake. And then he out maneuvers the nationals manager, which he got out maneuvered by Aaron Boone the other night against the yanks. Right. But when tomen comes in, Hayes hits a sack fly. Mani had to run single, France a single. Camposano the go ahead single. He retired. Marrow and that was it three hits one on run and an inning.
But man, he inherited a bases loaded disaster couldn't stop the bleeding. They're late inning bullpen collapse completely cost them the game. So who fudged up the nationals bullpen, especially Jake Simpson for opening the floodgates. Man, oh man, but it's just unbelievable man. It's just wow. I mean, you just you think they're out of it and they end up winning the god dang gang game and I got to hurry this up because they're telling us we got to cut these shows down less than 19 minutes. And I'm already over. So Arizona already won San Diego had to answer and they did the series finale tomorrow is at one 10 p.m. At pet go and I am load for me. Please, it's you're going for the sweep and it's a big one. It's a big one Jackson Kent on the mound for the Nats against Walker. Bueller Kents one and three with a five five five Bueller eight and six with a four point five six. I don't know that I'd keep Bueller in the rotation over Vasquez. Would you food for thought and for hobby day to day on the podcast, which is wherever you're seeing me or hearing me right now.
