1:00game. We're going to look at the game again, technically. We've got the upcoming schedule we need to look at. See what really are the chances realistic that they can do this. But let's begin with the unfortunate loss on Monday night in San Francisco. A Labor Day loss. Lot of work in this one on the Labor Day. And unfortunately one because of what it does to the teams withering playoff chances. I mean, the odds are not good that they're going to make it. But you know, they've been playing really, really hard. And they've been winning more games than they've been playing. And the last night it felt like a game that they should have lost. And then it felt like a game they should have won. And then in the end, they didn't lose it anyway. But it wasn't like an anger inducing game where they kept making bonehead mistakes or the pitching staff collapsed and was awful and screwed everything up. It really wasn't like that at all. Sure, there are some moments where execution needs to be better and was lacking a bit and you need to learn from those things and work on them moving forward. But that's kind of what you get when you have this young

2:01team. And I don't like using the phrase good losses because losing stinks no matter what. But in the grand scheme of things, it was very entertaining game between two very young teams that saw the Cardinals battle an extremely tough starter. Fight back. Come from behind yet again, which they've been doing a lot of. They use every single bench player available. And was almost there, I say, a playoff like atmosphere in San Francisco where they've been out of it for a long time. But unfortunately the W ends up going to the Giants. Now, let's start with the pitching matchup where you had three time all start Logan Webb, towing the rubber against the Cardinals, Michael McGrivie. Now, Webb has had an up and down year. It hasn't all been roses for him. Previous outing, he got crushed by the pirates to the tune of nine runs on nine hits and just two innings of work. I was really hoping that his struggles would continue. And we'd see that guy on the mound on Monday night. And instead we saw all star version of Logan Webb.

3:01He was at the top of this game. Pitches were moving all over the place. He was dotting the strike zone painting the blacks of the plate with everything. And on top of that, you had those crazy shadows that appear in mid afternoon games at Oracle Park. That's normal. That it's the first thing I noticed when I'm watching the game, like, how do you even follow the ball into the plate? That's crazy. The shadows that they got there. And Webb took full advantage of it. It was burning through the line up for the first five innings. He allowed, I think it was only two hits and struck out like seven. Like, he was very impressive. He looked awesome. On the other side, you had our guy, Michael McGrivie, who was coming off of winning against the Dodgers. Wasn't the best game in the game. I think it was the best game in the game. He was the best game he pitched. Obviously, he had that one. You would have hoped that, you know, he'd have been a little bit better than what he was. But, um, nonetheless, there's a win over the two-time defending

4:01World Series champion. So, can't complain too much, right? The one thing we did learn early on in this game with McGrivie on the mound is, you don't need to pitch to Raphael Devers. If that's the case, if you don't have to throw to him, don't do it. Just don't do it. And whatever you do, don't put guys on base in front of them. We learned that right away in the first inning. McGrivie walks the lead off guy. Big no, no, we know that. And pitches to Devers who hits one off the wall in that little nook in right center field. That Oracle, which would have been a home run in every single other ballpark in Major League Base Poll accept Oracle. But it brings in the first one of the game. It's one and nothing just two hitters into the bottom of the first inning. Devers is scorching hot right now. It's been one of the hottest hitters on the planet for a while now. Hit and 421 over his last 15 games is absolutely breaking. Do not give him anything if you don't have to from here on out. Period. Just don't don't. Barry bonds that dude. That's welcome. Get him.

5:01The guy is crushing everything. I don't care who's on the mound right now. It ain't going to usually end up in your favor at the end of the bat. So third inning starts with a painful knock up the middle against McGrivie. Where it hits his glove hand. And he knocks it down. Goes to pick it up. Fumbles it a couple of times. And when that happens, you know, the timing mechanism in your head thinks that whoever is running is really getting close to first base right now. So he does this horrendous panic toss that wasn't even close to first base, which puts a runner on second when nobody out. Obviously, and they even brought the stuff on the telecast. You want to say just calm down. Take your time in those situations. I'd rather guy be safe at first than in scoring position right off the bat. Ground ball moves him over to the third. Giants did a lot of this. Monday night where the, you know, if there is a spot in the game where they have to execute something, they did it pretty well. Cardinals decide to walk Devers. Well done. Well done.

6:01But then Bryce Eldridge hits a sack fly makes the two to nothing. Lead off guy in the first reaches on a walk. He scores lead off hitter in the third inning. Reach is on an air. Scores. You see the pattern here. Lead off guy is getting on. They're coming around to score. Fifth inning, you got two out and they decided to try and actually pitched a Devers and get him this time. And for whatever reason, like they, they go to attack him. McGreeby leaves the change up literally right down the middle. Absolute meatball. And Devers smokes it for another double. Little leaguers could have hit that thing. And then they go to attack him. McGreeby leaves the change up literally right down the middle. Absolute meatball. And Devers smokes it for another double. He's lucky. Devers didn't splash it into the bay. Really. But still you got two outs. So I understand why you're like, well, it's, you know, I would have, you don't want to leave it over the plate like that. But I get it way there's two outs. So let's try to get the third one. But you just get the next guy. Right? That's the, that's the plan here. Well, eldridge had something to say about that. He rips a fastball up in the zone to centerfield for a base set.

7:01That scores Devers. And now it's three to nothing. So that backfired. Again. Don't pitch to Devers. Three of bats for Devers. Two doubles in a walk. One RBI. One runs scored. Again, very bonds treatment. The rest of the series. That's, that's my idea of dealing with what Raphael Devers is doing at the plate these days. But credits of McGreeby. In the long run of things here, he never gave up a huge inning. He pitched quite well outside of those couple of bats made a really nice defensive play in the fourth inning. Got some nice plays from Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman. So defensively the Cardinals. Look pretty good. It was a solid outing. Still from McGreeby. And he kept his guy. And it's six thinning two outs. Alex Burleson absolutely destroys one from Logan Webb. A super bomb. Burley splashes it into the bay. 431 feet. Three to one. Jordan Walker walked. Lay over and all smokes one that gets snared by Eldridge over at first base to end the inning. Or that would have scored Jordan for sure. But that got San Francisco to pull

8:01the plug on web and go to the bullpen. So we're going to three to one ball game. It doesn't feel like the Cardinals are really in this one, but at the same time they are. It's just two run lead. Seventh inning. Nolan Gorman works the lead off. Walks. Super nice. It's bad for Gorman. Moves over to second on a strikeout in the dirt. Great. Great. So that gets them into scoring position for Nathan Church. Rips two out double down the line and right. Here we go. Three to two ball game. Now the eighth inning got very interesting when Ivan Herrera led off the inning with a single. And Ali went to the bench and pinch runs with Victor Scott. And I want to talk about this a little bit further because there's been some good discussion back and forth about what did or didn't happen whose fault it is. 10:02Thanks for making a lot of carlos first listen of the day and thank you for making locked on the number one sports podcast network. So top of the eighth inning, even on her rear leads off with the single lead off man is on. This is good, right? That usually means some offense is about to go down. Mind you, the carlos are down through to two here. So Ali is like, all right, let's let's let's get Victor Scott back in the game. Let's get him on first here. I assume the idea here. And again, I am assuming which we all know the phrase for that makes an ASS out of you and me. I know. But I was assuming that the idea was to try to steal second base. Obviously you put his great speed on in case a ball gets into a gap or something he's going to score. I you know, they're their positives for putting Victor on. But I assume the idea was to steal second base and get him into scoring position. That way, burly in the boys behind him cannot commit now in order for him to do that. You do have to take some pitches. That's just way it goes.

11:02Like if you watch anybody with a really good base stealer gets on first base, they don't always go on the first pitch. Maybe not even the second pitch, but you got to give him a chance to get a read on the pitcher, get a good job and take off. Now, Alex Burleson is the first person up after Victor takes over first space. Takes first pitch. Victor doesn't go. Second pitch, burly swings at it and crushes one to center field. Just misses clubbing a two run home run. Now, this is where people started to get upset because it certainly was deep enough for Victor to tag up at first base and move the second base, which in hindsight, he should have. But Victor goes at least halfway here because if that hits off the wall, he's trying to score from there. Cody have done it. If he had tagged up at first, I don't know. He is extremely fast, but he does and he goes halfway instead.

12:04He does an advance. We'll chalk it up to the mistake for Victor. And you can even see Burleson tag up, tag up instead of going halfway, which when you look back at it, you're like, all right, that would have been pretty good. And he'd been on second after that. Now you got one out runner still on first base. That brings up Jordan Walker, who swings at the first pitch. Okay. Then he takes strike two, which puts him in a no two hole. Now, like he's got a swing. Like there's no chances for Victor to run here. And he ends up getting to hit singles in between that hole and short and third. Now it's first and second one out. You got two fast guys on. You got two of your best base dealers on. If you agree that Victor Scott's a good base dealer. Carlos don't steal third very much, but a double steal here is at least on the table. Like it's an option. If you want to go for it, lay over and all. You're rookie up to the plate.

13:07Swings at the first pitch. Grounds into the field as choice. Now you got first and third, stealing any bases. A moot point here. So was he supposed to go ever? Was that ever? Was it even on? Was he supposed to run? We will never know. But part of me wanted to see them at least tried to run at the same time. For at least fly ball should have got him over to missed opportunity there. Learning experience there. But the boys don't quit. They don't quit. Even though they don't score that inning in the ninth inning, you get back to back and field singles by bias and CJC. Bias busted it down the line for his base hit, which was great to see. He loved to see the hustle. And then CJC should have gotten to the outfield, really solid play. I think it was the second baseman that knocked it down on a diving attempt there to keep Bias at second base at the time. So that end up being a big play. Another small but important mistake is made here. And this is where the execution comes into play.

14:08Nathan Church comes up first and second. Nobody out. The bun's coming. Giants are crashing. Church tries to bun in any way and he pops it up. And it could have been disastrous. But luckily Cardinals runners got back to first and second without getting doubled up. But those are the little things that the really good teams, they get that down. They either get that down or they don't bump that play at all. And they figure something else out, but they get those runners moved over somehow some way. They even talked about it on a telecast that like if you see the guy crashing, like you can't bump because you know that it's going to be an automatic gather going to they did the what they call the wheel play where the shortstop runs to third. And so the third baseman if he got to is going to whip it to third anyway. So you got to figure something else out. Giants later in the game when the Cardinals did that same thing defensively and came crashing. The guy pulled it back and then swung and just missed hitting one down the line.

15:09So there's other ways to attack this, but church. Gets underneath the ball pops it up to the third baseman. So not good, not good there. The Giants later on will execute, bunning the ball twice. And it becomes the difference in the game. Brian Torres comes up works a awesome eight pitch wall. Kekko that that there and that's followed by Jose for means pinch hit. Sacfly to tie the game. You love the fight. You love the relentless, a relentlessness of this team. Like it's great. Stannic throws up a zero in the ninth inning. We're off to extras. Just what you want after having to play in three in Colorado, right? Because you're already using up all your pitchers when you had to go into Colorado. And now here we go. We got to go to extra endings now. So McGreeby, luckily, when deep for you and got you six and two thirds innings, but any onion up having to burn through guys anyway, which sucks in the long run.

16:11Tenth inning in the Cardinals, grab the lead on a blue single by Leo Bernal, who continues to impress me with his poise at the plate. No moment seems too big for him. I love his swing, both the right side and the left side. He's really been a lot of fun to watch. But we know that how this game goes, right? Because of extra innings when you're the away team, you got to score at least twice. That's the goal. And they only get one. So the Giants can play for the tie if they need to. And they get their ghost runner in off of Raleigh O'Brien rather quickly to be honest with you. Like it didn't take long. They walked average to make it first and second. But then O'Brien leaves a sinker up to Eldridge who wants to get a ripswad center field makes it first and second. Nobody out. We're tied it for another blown safe. Although it didn't put the guy on second base. So I think that sucks that they still count that against him. But that makes seven on the year for O'Brien. He's just two off the league leader, him and George Soriano now tied at seven blown saves each for the 2026 season.

17:14Giants get their bun down to make it second and third. They end up walking, Jung Hulie, to load them for the force play at home. And Raleigh O'Brien gets a soft contact by Drew Gilbert. Taps one in front of the plate. And this was a great play. Bernal pounces like a friggin Puma from out behind home play grabs the ball touches the plate simultaneously fires the first double play. Ittings over awesome stuff. They reviewed it, but it wasn't even close. They were just praying that Bernal somehow didn't have the ball on his hand when he touched on play. Fantastic play by the rookie. That was awesome. Under the eleventh we got Thomas J C is your first sitter. You got bias on second. He flies out pushes over the free runner to third base where the game shifts once again. And again, it's on the shoulders of Nathan Church. Had the RBI double to out RBI double earlier in the game, which was awesome, right? Can't get the fun down in a key situation. Not so awesome. Chancellor redeem himself here instead.

18:18Taps one in front of the plate. Doesn't make very good contact. Going out of first runner can advance. Now you got a runner on third and two wilds. He's our Prieto last guy left on the bench. He's got a pinch head. He draws a walk. Gives Jose for me a chance, but the Fermanator grounds out the end. The ending were still tied at four, but now you're in trouble. Now you're in trouble because. It's the home team's got the guy in second. So they can do all the small balling they want to try to get this guy in. Ali goes to George Soriano, Giantsley down another bunch successfully. Again, they did it twice in this game and pulled it off. Moves the runner over. Infield comes in for Shay Witt com who hits a chopper. And it goes over the head of the pulled in infield. So Jayce is able to field it, but I mean, didn't matter. Runscores game over. Should they have loaded the bases up? Just to make sure that you can get the force play at home. I suppose you could have. I mean, people are making that argument, but you're dealing with the bottom of the order for the Giants here.

19:21And if you walked the next two, which is what you'd have to do to load it up. You flip the lineup card over. You go back to the top of the order. And that's where the better hitters are anyway. So taking your chances with the number eight hitter, it didn't bother me. Just didn't work out. It's a tough loss. Definitely some learning moments in here. Executions got to be better on certain things. It came back though. I mean, there are some good things to focus on. You came back, you battled hard, you got the lead at one point. But it's tough with that extra inning role that, you know, if you have a bullpen that doesn't have a lot of swing and miss, you're kind of screwed. Because when they put it in play, things are going to happen. And that's kind of where it happened at for the cardinals where you just need more swing and miss in the bullpen for situations like that. That's what you'd prefer. So again, I'm not. I'm not upset about anything that they did or didn't do in this one. There are things to work on for sure.

20:23But I'm not hanging my head after this loss. It's just it was a good ball. Overall, three stars of the game coming up next and how this effects playoff picture. I'm going to give my third one to Mike McGrievey, six and two thirds innings, three runs, two of them earned. The one earned is because of his own air when he, when he threw the ball away, allow six hits, two walks, four Ks. Aficion kept a team in it, chewed up some innings, was able to pitch into the seventh there. I thought it was an outstanding job. Just don't pitch to Raphael Devers. Ever, ever. And we got to figure out how to get eldritch out. That was the other guy that was a real pain in the butt. And this one, second star Thomas, Jayce, man, the guy just keeps delivering only hitter with multiple hits in this game

24:32has looked really good at shortstop filling in for Mason, when who apparently worked out on the field before the game and could get activated any day. Now I would assume say is our pre into would be the one who would go back down when Mason gets activated. But when it does happen, when Mason, when comes back, they got to find a place for Jayce's bat in this lineup while he's on this heater right now. He's 15 for 29 since getting called back up. Three homers, eight ribbies, 11 runs, scored at nine games. You can't bench that guy. You got to keep them in there, whether he's playing third, whether you got him in second base, you got to figure something out and you got to keep them in there. Number one star, I'm going to go to lay over and all. Robbed of extra bases in the sixth inning comes through with the blue single to take the lead in the tenth inning. He makes the double play to get him out of the 10th inning and move it on to 11. And he wasn't even supposed to be catching in this game. If you remember, he was the DH to start, but ended up behind the plate in extra innings because of the maneuvering that Ali was doing trying to get the win.

25:35He's now batting 310 since making his debut has a hit in all seven games that he's played in with seven RBIs in five runs, scored. So impressed. So impressed with the lay over and all right now. This loss though drops the birds to five back in the wild card. Arizona and San Diego, both won. They continue to win Arizona, one's three in a row now. San Diego's won back to back game. So it's really, for being honest, it's a neck and neck battle between the Padres and the Diamondbacks at this point. You know, the Marlins and the Cardinals are still hanging around, but like I've said before, they have to get hot and those other teams, they got to cool off and they're not. They're just not. And they only got 17 games remaining. So it's not good. But the fact that we are actually watching meaningful September baseball, we're watching these young kids perform at this level. We're getting to see them grow right before our very eyes. It's still exciting to me. You know, I have no illusions that they are going to the playoffs.

26:35You know, I love seeing them continue to battle and scratch and claw their way through games. And maybe they'll surprise us, maybe they'll shock some people and maybe they will. But the odds are not good that they're going to make it. But man, I'm still having a lot of fun watching the seed play. And that's I think the most important thing at this part of the season. Power raking, Cardinals moved up two slots from 17 to 15 right behind Cleveland and ahead of Miami. The Brewers, Dodgers and Braves stay in the top spots in the NL and the divisions, filling in the Cubs, they'd really have to fall apart at this point for them to not make the playoffs. Cardinals schedule, it's favorable. You got two more in San Francisco. And then the final homestand and bush, you've got the White Sox who are still trying to hang on to the division lead in the A.O. Central. And then it's the Giants again in the Washington Nationals before they wrap up on the road in Pittsburgh. And then you face Milwaukee. So you got two playoff teams with the White Sox and Milwaukee, but you got four non-playoff teams. You've got to win games against them. And you need, you're going to need a sweep at some point. Like taking two of three is great every time I love winning the series.

27:37But if you're going to hang around at this thing, you're going to have to start sweeping some people. So chance to get back in the wind column tonight.
