The St. Louis Cardinals suffer yet another bullpen collapse late in a game and they get swept by the giants. All the vomit inducing the tails on today's episode of locked on Cardinals. But we got your bar ready. You are locked on Cardinals. Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the locked on podcast network. Your team every day. Hey there, Cardinal fans. I'm JD Hafferent and on today's show, it's not all bad news. All right. Maybe I should specify not everything is as dark and do me as is it started off. Like it's not all bad. Although Liam Doyle did have to leave his start on Wednesday because of an issue.

So we'll get into that. But just so you know, it's that like into the world stuff. Right now, Radarigas continues to go off one of the best dinners in the minor leagues right now. But we got to strap in first for another episode of how the bullpen blows starring the St. Louis Cardinals because I don't know what else to say about what we've seen this year. It is so unfortunate. That we got to keep talking about this and we have to keep seeing this happen over and over because you've got a team that in my opinion has been playing some pretty entertaining baseball. They deserve to win more games than they have. I've thoroughly enjoyed watching this team and this young roster learning on the fly, learning developing throughout this season. But with that, just like when you're raising your own kids, there are moments where you watch

them and you want to tear your hair out and punch something when things go south. And we've also had plenty of that this year as well. The most frustrating losses, at least for me, I don't want to speak for everybody. But are the ones where the team seemingly has this game in hand. And then they cough it up and ultimately lose those drive me bonkers. You know, the one run ball games they're always going to flip back and forth on teams. Like being one of those teams that wins so many one run games. Like eventually the tide feels like it's going to turn on you and you're going to lose a couple of them and then you're in trouble. And it goes without saying though, the teams that, you know, win more of those one run games are teams that are going to the playoffs. The cartels are not going to the playoffs. This is not something that we've beat around the bush on. I mean, we've been saying it for

quite some time. Basically since the trade deadline dead, they're probably not going to playoffs. Now they hung around for a while. But now you're starting to see a lot of separation. Okay. The inevitable E next to the wild card column where you're already eliminated from the division wild cards in next one, right? And early on the season when going back to one run games, you know, the cartels were winning those. Yeah, Bernie McClus pointed this out on X last night that they were 10 and 3 in their first 13 games in one run ball games. And of course, that was also at the point of the season where they were hanging around at the top of the division. And in the wild card chase, sets that point 13 and 22 in one run games and you're seeing them slowly slip into oblivion because of it. Now losing all three games in San Francisco by one run. Pretty gut-wrenching considering number one, the giants have not been a good team this year.

Overall, they are not a good team. Yeah, they're better at home. But they were 59 and 85 before the Cardinals arrived at Oracle Park. One of the bottom five teams in baseball. You didn't walk into Colorado thinking you were going to lose. Why would you walk into San Francisco thinking about this? And what did I say before this road trip? The Cardinals for whatever reason. They seem to play down or up to whomever their opponent is. They go to LA. They play the Dodgers. Play really well against them. Take two of three. Could have swapped them. In Colorado, they end up having to outslug the Rockies, which is just what happens at course field. So went to a three. And all you got to do is finish the job in San Francisco. I just want to end the season on a good now. And instead you get swept by losing three straight one run games. Now, there's still games left. So you can still end on a good one. But man, right? That's just.

And the first two. The offense can't get anything going, but you fight back in both. We found positives in both games, even taking the lead at one point on one day, but you lose an extra. Then Tuesday, you get it within one run in the ninth inning. But you fall short Wednesday. You had this game in the bag. It was over. There are no excuses to be blowing a six to one lead to a San Francisco giants lineup that didn't even have Rafael Devers in it. And you only had four outs left to get. There are no excuses there. Shame. Shame. Shame bell. What's that shame bell from? What was that? Why can't I think of the name of the show? Game of Thrones. Shame. Shame. Fiber on lead. Olly goes to the rookie K. Windquest to face the bottom of the order. Single starts all of us.

But then Windquest gets to strike out in the fly out. And this is where things get get stupid. Really. He hits the next batter with the first pitch curve ball. And this for whatever reason throws him all out of whack. He walks the next gun five pitches. Most of them weren't even that close. Now it's bases loaded to out. You're still up six to one at this point. And I get leaving him in there. And I saw a lot of people in the comment section are like, why did they leave Windquest in? And I'll tell you what at least this is why I think it happened. Because he's a rookie and he needs to figure out how to get himself out of these situations. Why not practice it? There's nothing to lose here anymore, right? Like the idea that they're going to make the playoffs, I think is out. It's gone. So why not use these moments as learning moments?

But he's going to have to do this when the Cardinals are contending. At some point he's going to have to do things like this and get out of situations like this, whether he creates them or not. So I get it. And coming up to the dish, it's the guy that's tormented them. This whole series feels like there's always one guy that just abyscerates the Cardinals each series. No matter what team it is, there's somebody who just cannot, they can't get out. And that guy happened to be Bryce Eldridge in this series. He is the cause of a lot of pain in English in this three game series. Infield shifted towards right. Eldridge rolls what in a normal defensive setup would be an easy out. But it goes through the hole where the short staff would normally be playing for a two run single. Now, Bernal was not set up inside on this pitch. But I'm assuming that the idea was not to throw the pitch on the outside part of the plate

because that would go against your entire defensive setup. If he's going to take it that way, which is what good hitters do, the big holes over there. So you're not doing that. But now you got a six three ball game. And now this is when Ali is like, all right, all right, all right, all right. You throw a lot of pitches here, dude. Let's get you out of here. Sadly in Trots George Soriano. The first half of the season, George Soriano. Was solved three point three two, er a and 41 game second half. He's been terrible. 24 appearances, er a of six coming into this game. Mind you, August the er a 7.36. And up to this point in September, he was at 6.75. Horrible numbers, right. So I'm thinking just like you, oh, I'm sure this is going to go. Just fine. I mean, you only got to get one out, right. So I went out. As you know already, that didn't happen.

The implosion. That is the rest of this eighth inning. We're going to talk about next on locked on cards. A big big you to our friends at Amazon for this limited break. This back school season. Spend last on your kids with Amazon. Now we all now crazy back school shopping. Can be that experience. It can get nutty. It starts with a few items on the list. Then suddenly you're you're shopping for supplies and then clothes and then lunch gear. TAC. And about 10 other things that you didn't see coming at all ads up really, really fast. You get that teacher's list. That supply list. You know what I'm talking about. It arrives somehow every item feels pretty reasonable on their own. And then you add everything together and realize, hey, how much stuff does one kid need for one school year? And when you start shopping for a few back to school essentials and realize that quickly the list continues to grow. Supplies, clothes, lunch gear, headphones, it just keeps going and going and going.

That's why fighting a little prices on all of the things you need makes a big difference this time of year. So remember, with Amazon's low back to school prices, just spend less on your kids. Because every dollar you don't spend on them is a dollar you haven't spent on them. Shop back to school to Amazon and spend less on your kids. Thanks for making lots on cartels. First listen of the day and thank you for making a lot on the number one sports podcast network. Now we've established that things have not gone all that well for George Soriano. They just have here in the second half of the season. It's been bad. So when he comes out and it's six three and there's runners on. Personally, I'm not feeling great. I'm not thrilled about this one bit. But I always got to use guys in the in the bullpen. And. Again, I just I.

I wish you had gone to stand it. It's not like we're not even having this conversation but it doesn't. Alright, bad luck on the first hitter. Ground ball but. It's not hit hard enough. This is a JC who doesn't have Mason wins arm. Who was out. After apparently dealing with more pain in his thumb. So that sucks. That's not great news. And Jonah Cox. Runs like the win. beat it out of first base. Now it's 64. And it was at this point that I tweeted out. Our followers on next will we can go back and see it. I went, come on guys. You can't blow another one. And George Soriano looked me dead in the eye and said, hold my beer. Jung who leads your next batter. He gifts Soriano a first pitch strike with a pitch clock and violation goes up. Oh, one didn't have to throw the ball. Next pitch fouled off.

Got him. Oh, two now Soriano for no a pair of reason gets wild. Now he can't throw strikes. Next three are off the plate. Now you got a full count. Now you got to come to him. And this is once again, where the lack of swinging miss in the Cardinals ball pin comes into play. We've talked about it all year. That's an ingredient. They're really missing. Swinging miss not only in the bullpen, but in the starting rotation, but specifically you need it in the bullpen because the bullpen is usually at a point of the game where things are getting tight. And you need guys who can get swinging miss. And the Cardinals do not have enough of those people. Soriano is now one of them. Three straight foul balls against him leaves one hanging finally that Jung who leaves rips off the wall in right field for a two run double. We got a tie ball game. It's unbelievable. It's unbelievable. I'm in the car at this point going to another job of mine. And I'm like, you've got to be ishing me. But wait, there's more.

Now you got to go ahead run at second base and a chance to complete this horrific masterpiece that you've created. And the Giants don't make you wait long. First pitch, Whitcom blasted to center field over the head of Nathan Church off the wall, RBI double, seven to six Giants. Normally at this point of a game when this is what I'm watching, I am dropping all the exploits like it is. I'd be losing my mind. But I am so numb to this. I wish I was numb to this back in July. But I cared still. At this point, I realized where they are. And this is just stuff that's going to happen. I'm pretty numb doing it at this point, especially ever since that.

I'm going to destroy something. I'm so mad about them blowing a game. After this one, like after they took the lead, I just started laughing. I laughed. Because it's hilarious that you have a bullpen that can't hang on to five run leads with four outs to go. Hell, areas. Cards get a lead off single, the ninth inning by the Fermanator. But in keeping with the trend of this series, Jordan Walker grounds into a double play. Was it playing yesterday? That was a pinch. And then Herrera grounds out to end it. 11 more ground ball outs to go along with the other million of them that they hit in the first two games. It's a shocking loss. Not saying it's not. But it's also not so shocking at the same time. Because we have seen this happen time and time again. So I should expect it. And I do. I expect it to happen. There is going to be at least once a week.

And they got the seasons only got a couple weeks left. But at least once a week, they are going to absolutely food bar a game. And it's cost them dearly during this season. Which again, it's not been a horrible season. Like it's been fun. And I, it's gone better than I thought it would. And I think that most people thought it would. But that's now eight blown saves by George Soriano, second highest amount in the league behind Andres Munoz of Seattle, who is a real closer and Cal fit again of the Tigers. Five of his blown saves have been in the second half of the season. And the guy just looks cooked. He's on fumes. He's already 10 innings passes career high in a season. That's now 28 blown saves on the year for the Cardinals team. Third highest total of the major leagues behind Washington and Detroit. Washington, does Washington blow a save every other game. They've got 38 of them now. Imagine how frustrated they are.

We're over here at 28 throwing his defense. Cardinals finished the road trip at four and five, but three of the losses came in the opponents final at bat. 26th one run loss for the Cardinals this year, who have lost nine of their last 10 one run games. If they're going to spend money on anything going into 2027, I beg of you. I think I speak for locked on Cardinals nation as well as Cardinals nation. I beg of you, please, spend some of that on the bullpen, please. Because this sucks watching games get flushed down toilet like a turd on a regular basis. Like I'm telling I'm trying not to get mad about it, but just like speaking about it out loud, I get upset. I'm trying to stay calm. Because we're at the end of the year that we should be calm

about these things. And there were positives before the ill-fated eighth inning, which is where the focus is for our three stars of the game. So let's do that. Third star of the game. I'm going to show a little bit of love to Nolan Gorp. He doesn't get a lot of it. Only player in this game with multiple hits, two for four, RBI Blooper in the second, mine drive in this core, but nobody knows any different. Also lefty versus lefty single the right field in the eighth inning. Second star, Leo Bernal. Continue to be quite impressive, doesn't he? He's a lot of fun to watch. The big three run jack, which at the time felt like the dagger that the Cardinal Soirley missed in games one and two of the series. Second home run since getting called up. He's now driven in 10 run, or he's he's now scored 10 runs. No, he's driven in. He's driven in 10 runs. I think he scored like six

times. I don't know why I wrote about it. 10 RBI's though. In his first nine games, it's a big one. Okay. First star of the game. And we don't really even get to talk about him. Andrei Palante allowed the run in the first inning. He goes five innings, allows just one out of five hits. No walks, four strikeouts. It's not spectacular to watch. But you look up and there he is. Like it's like, oh, another, another salad outing. He goes on for Andre. Lovers this season, ER rated 3.45. Heck of a comeback season for Andre Palante. I didn't see that couple at all. I don't know anybody. I think we were all ready to strap him to a rocket and shoot him to the moon. And here he is. And it'd not be in one of your better pictures throughout the year. Shout out to

Hey, Hey, man, and then it wasn't with four outs to go in the game. They got the day off today. Traveling home got the final homestay of the season, Hall of Fame weekend. It should be a lot of fun. I hope I hope we get big crowds so we can salute Albert and Yadi. It'd be weird if it wasn't sold out. Like, you got to show, you got to show your appreciation of that. But yeah, just horrible. Just horrible. To lose that game. Down on the farm though, things are going much better than they are at the major league level. The wrecking ball that is the Springfield Cardinals crushed their opponent again on Wednesday. But top pitching prospect Liam Doyle had to leave early. I'll tell you why coming up on Lockdown Grants. Thank you for making locked on the number one sports podcast network. Let's go to the farm. Springfield destroys the travelers on Wednesday. Score was 16 to six. Type-E back in the lineup. As if they needed another weapon. If a type-E was back three for five three runs scored. He's been incredible this year.

Rainiel Rodriguez. I mean, do we have to brag about him? Sure. Why not? Put on a show again. Going four for five, including his 21st Dinger of the year for double A. It's got 25 over all this season. Drowman three. He also scored three times. The guy's hitting four or 14 since August 18th and he leads all Cardinals minor leakers in average at 321 hits with 141 runs at 94 and OPS at 977. He's insanely good and he's 19 years old. Not to be outdone. Jesus bias. Drowman four runs, including a three run shot. 24th home run at double A for Jesus 38th over all this season. Pretty impressive stuff. Stole him from the mets in the Ryan Housel. Cade McGee. No relation to Willie by the way. Pop two home runs, Drowman four and the win. He's got three blasts in seven games since he got promoted to double A. Jack Uravitch went two for four.

Hit his seventh smash for double A. 30th over all this season. He continues to break. Now Liam Doyle was a starter on Wednesday. He ended up going five innings. Two earned runs, one hit, walks two strikes out five. Kind of seventh one of the season, but he had to be removed from the game due to a blister on his pitching hand. But the word is from the reporting that I bred through that he should be fine. They're not they're not concerned about it. You know, blisters are never I mean, when you see guys who deal with it, the one that comes to mind is Nick Lidolo from the Cincinnati Reds. It's constantly going on the IL with blister issues. It was a Josh Beckett back in the day. Constantly dealing with blister issues. I have not heard that Liam Doyle has had that issue ever in his career. So the assumption is that this isn't an

ongoing problem and he should be fine. He's been on quite a tear down the stretch, picking up wins in his last five starts and over his last, what 10 games? 1.73 year A, 1.02 with 59 punchies over 52 innings. Hasn't allowed more than two runs in his start since June 16th. Now it's pretty good. It's pretty good. Your big league club is now 72 and 75. They have slipped the fourth place in the division. They're only two and a half up on the red zone. If I can beg for one more thing, spend money on the bullpen next year. But I beg you to not finish and last this year. After all the fun and all the success this season has brought us, would that not be the biggest kick in the Twig and berries if they finished in last place? Even though they were so much better than everybody thought they were going to be. Can't let that happen. And I can't live with that because my wife is a red fan from Cincinnati.

And if I have to hear about that, I'm coming to get somebody. I'm coming to get you, Jordan Chorion. And I'm going to have a talk into you, Riley O'Brien, because you guys have been the biggest culprits for the blown seas. 15 of them between you two. I kid, but I don't.
