Hello and a very jolly evening to you all, a brass band lovers and first-timers alike.
You're tuning to this week's Wednesday Live, your two-hour free ticket to the brightest,
the ball-list and of course the most brilliant brass band music on the airwaves.
I'm Peter and I'll be your guide as we march, we dance and swing our way through a hand-picked
selection of tall tapping tunes, no contest pieces, just pure upbeat joy.
So whether you're a lifelong bandie or just curious about what all the brassy forces
about, you're in the right place.
So polish up your imaginary brass band instruments, settle in and let's get this show started.
And what a way to kick things off, then with a classic twist, here's the world-famous
quarry band with the take on the Chubby Checkers Let's Twist the Gain, and if you're not
dancing by the end of this one, please check your pulse warrior.
Oh yes and e, that was the quarry band and if you're new to the brass band world, then
let me tell you the absolute legends.
Based in the Arundhavalli in South Wales, the quarry band has been crowned European and
British champions at more time than I've shaken a bat in it.
The norm for the innovative concerts and the knack for making every genre sparkle with
brass brilliance.
Next up, a tune that practically became a national treasure.
The floral dance by the Brigha's and Rastwick band, now this piece stormed to the UK pop
charts in 1977, reaching the No. 2 spot and even giving pop stars a room for their
money.
Tell you what, let's relive them in that magic just one more time, here it is, the floral
dance.
What a classic!
The floral dance is based on the Cornish Festival where tones 4 preyed through the streets, dancing
and celebrating the start of spring.
Now the Brigha's and Rastwick bands version became a surprise hit thanks to the late
great Tury Walgon lending his vocals.
It's a perfect example of how brass bands bring communities and of course the pop music
charts together as one.
Anyway, let's swing things up a notch now with the Grime Thought, the Coloury Band and
the Big Band attribute to Glen Miller.
Grime Thought, of course, shot to international fame in the film Brast off, but they're just
as comfortable with a bit of a Glen Miller music.
Just as they are, well with a match anyway, all I can say to that one is Enjoy!
Oh, if I don't get you in the mood, I don't know what will.
The Grime Thought Coloury Band's story is literally one of the resilience and reinvention.
Formed by Yorkshire miners, they've weathered picked closures and some tough times, but the
music has always lifted spirits and a little bit of a fun fact for you.
The Big Band attribute is one of the crowd's favourite pieces during summer time concerts.
And as I've just said, listening to that piece, it's hard, it really is just hard not
to bob your head to it and tap your feet along with it as well, what a fantastic piece
that is.
24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Love to hear from you, love to hear what you're up to or any future band from the job you may have
coming up as well. By all means it's getting such as I said I would absolutely love to hear from you.
Now I want you to saddle up now for a trip to the Wild Wild West.
Now the Brast Band style now here is the Black Dyke Band, the way that the
roasting theme from the Magnificent 7. Black Dyke are a brass royalty within the Brast
Band world they really are, with literally well over 350 recordings and more and collaborations
with everyone from people like Paul McCartney and even Peter Gabriel. Anyway here is the Black
Dyke Band under the direction of Dr. Nicholas Childs giving all the Magnificent 7.
You know there's something magical about hearing film music being played by a Brast Band,
the power, the drama. You know it's like the silver screen just comes alive in sound and Black
Dyke's versatility is absolutely legendary and second to none. Did you know they've even appeared
on the Beatles Yellow Submarine. Before we crack on though I wanted to give a big shout out to
the Batsers Betz Hanger, sorry, Colory Band. I'm hoping I've said that right, Betz Hanger
Colory Band, who has just been promoted to the second section after leaving a third section or when
they won the section at the London Southern Counties Championship. Big congratulations to them as
they have now been promoted to a second section starting in 2027. So big congratulations to them.
From the wild west now to well to the nuns of Cyster Act, here's the forelands band now with
I will follow him. Now this pop classic actually gets a brassy makeover and that's guaranteed to put
a smile on anyone's face. Here is the forelands band giving us from Cyster Act. I will follow him.
The forelands band giving us from the hip-mute
movie that starred Wuppie Goldberg Cyster Act and that was I will follow him. Now brass bands
just love a good pop tune daughter and I will follow him as well as a perfect example really.
Arrangeers works wonders translating well catchy melodies into rich harmonies and sparkling
solos and well yeah it's all about making familiar songs feel fresh and fun. Let's give a big
cheer now for our community bands out there and here's one that's coming your way now. It's a band
that I've never featured before but they are just as good as the top class bands. Here is the
Dalesford Community Brass Band from Australia. So if there is anyone from Australia listening
welcome to the show with the rendition of a all-time classic children's nursery rhyme and song
the teddy bears picnic. Proof? Well yeah that brass banding is definitely globally fun-boy.
Ah yes indeed what an absolutely brilliant piece of that is. I do love that arrangement. In fact
the only other band I've heard played that arrangement was the Chadgaard time band and they did a
good version of it as well and I don't care what anyone says when you know you think about all these
brass bands you've got your fourth sections, third section, second section, first section and
then your championship sections but we need to give part to these community bands out there
and community and youth bands well yeah they are the hearts of the brass band world. You know
the other ones that are playing from village halls to big city parks and these groups I believe
bring people together young and old sat on a lecture in a big field or in a big park in front of
the bands so much in the bands and you know to show the joy of music and as you just heard
there can be every bit of entertainment or entertaining sorry as the big brass band names out there
they really can and that was the Dale's third community brass band from Australia down under
absolutely brilliant. Attention all UK brass bands and brass players sounds of brass is

Wednesday Live with Peter Webster on Sounds of Brass Radio
24 hours a day 7 days a week the home of brass band music
It's time to hit the dance floor now with a summer pop and he's been played by the Carlton
Maine Fricklerick Coloury band who brings us a 1998 favourite which was made famous by
Catatoria here is Mulder and Scully
and who say the brass bands can't do pop from walsies to discos bands but well they just
love to get audiences moving and well yeah pop actually inspired pieces are actually a staple
concerts and always and have always and will always be a hit with the crowd especially the younger
generation let's take a quick trip can I start again let's let's take a quick trip to the
Netherlands now with the brass band the well sang and the lively piece called bandstand European
bands yeah they always seem to bring their own flair to the brass band tradition
the well sang from Germany the giving all the bands stand here on today's Wednesday Live
on a cell pita here on Sounds of Brass Radio I just want to break into the program a little now
with a story actually that I've been following now for a few months and it's to do with the
brass band that unfortunately have to move premises and it's the Isle of Sheppie band and I've
just come just come across the latest update on the Facebook page and they were disappointed
to show that the island of Sheppie band that bid for the building that there was going to bid for
114 Queensboro Road has unfortunately been unsuccessful now the rain as a community you know the
the rain is for true community space at supporting local music young people community groups
an event for the island now sadly it appears that the decision was ultimately driven by profit
well tell me when it isn't really rather than the opportunity to give something back to the
community especially to the younger players out there well unfortunately disappointingly the
opportunities now gone but the good news is there is a silver lining or a gold lining at the end of
tunnel and they are now continuing to rehearse at the local rugby club and an incredibly great
pull for the support with many bookings already confirmed this year and they're continuing to carry
on growing so it's not bad for a small band and they got some good news out of it in the end but
it really does upset presenters like Misselle who like here at Sounds of Brass Radio were
airing it is to keep brass banding alive and as i've already said it doesn't matter if it's
a fourth second a fourth third second first or even the championship sections who have got money
coming in we also need to give credit to these local community bands as well because without then
the in my eyes it's these community bands and these local little bands that start these players
on the road of brass bands and then they move to bigger things and yeah i just wanted to show that
with you on today's show anyway well let's let's get back into show anyway well brass banding
isn't just a british affair anymore actually the Norway to from Norway to New Zealand
bands around the world who put their own spin on genre now the European brass band championship
are always a highlight of the calendar showcase the incredible talent and creativity it's time we
head to launch pad number one and getting ready for liftoff here's back with the cori band now
with this iconic star wars scene John Williams music is a favourite for any brass arrangers
and this version is definitely out to this world he was the cori band taking us into space with
star walls
Star Wars 2 Jurassic Park, brass bands just love a blockbuster.
The power of the full band always brings these epic scores to life in my eyes anyway,
and the best days are no special effects even required.

Now to a little bit of a musical and mischief and the grind thought of a

concert, here is Chinese take-away.

Brothers are a brass band staple, arrangers loved to tackle everything from Abba to Queen,
giving them a familiar hit say balled brassy twist. As Paul's it's all about having fun
and definitely surprising the audiences.

When's the live with myself Peter here on Sounds of Brass Radio? Look at it, I'm getting
a day ahead of myself already and yes you're live with myself Peter here on Sounds of
Brass Radio. Remember, if you want to get into it for us here at the station the lines
are now open. You can send me a message to 0793 866805 that 0793 866805. Remember, if
you are going to contact me for outside the UK then the United Kingdom's early card is
plus 4.4. I may just want to send me an email and you can do that either way. I'm not bothered
and you can do that by sending a message to Wednesday-live-with-Peter at mail.com. That's
Wednesday-live-with-Peter at mail.com. Now let's march across the Atlantic now with the
New York staff band and a piece called Saints on Parade. This American style opener is packed
with energy and definitely a lot of good cheer.
Yes indeed, I tell you what, it's not often a march gets me excited but that one certainly
did. Now there's a march I would love to see a band do on a wick Friday contested I really
would, being played by the New York staff band and that was at Saints on Parade. Now the thing
about march is they are the bread and butter on brass bands, whether it's a village fates
or a grand parade, nothing really gets the crowd going like a good, loud, rousing march and
Saints on Parade, well it mixes classic tunes with a big band, a swing. Absolutely irresistible in my
eye, absolutely loved every bit of that I did. Well he's talking about marches, we're going to go
to another march. Now a concert march, here's the Fordon's band with Pandenis, a modern concert march
that's wealth, it's as catchy as they really come.
From the album brass explosions, the music of Goff Richards and that was the Fordon's band
The Giving Girls at Pandenis, the concert march, absolutely great piece that is. Now today's
composer is keeping the march traditional live with fresh tunes and clever twists and Pandenis
is a great example, it's traditional in spirit but with that modern kick and as I said that was
the Fordon's band, absolute great piece really really is. Now there's one thing here at Saint
the Brass, we love hearing from you our listeners and if you're dancing in your kitchen or you might
be singing along in the car, let us know. Show your four tours and stories on our social media page
on Facebook on the sounds of brass. As well, brass banding is all about community and I'll tell you
now we want you to be part of ours and we'd love to hear what you're up to this evening.
It's time for a sure stopper now, here is back with the Black Dyke band featuring a dazzling
euphonium solos in carnival of venice. Get ready for some serious virtual washi too now.
The euphonium which is the starring literally any a brass band, warm, lyrical and capable of
those breathtaking runs and Paganini's Carnival of Ennis is a favourite for solos packed with
variations and technical fireworks. Today's solos was David Child's one of the worlds leading
euphonium players who's actually performed everywhere from such places as BBC Proms right across
to Carnegie Hall. Anyway, let's spice things up now with a percussion feature. Here's the
quarry band at the Royal Welsh College for Music and Drama with a live recording that they did
of somebody put samba in the band. Get ready for sizzling rhythms and definitely a whole lot of
fun. Percussion is, well, they are the unsung heroes of the brass band if you ask me.
From samba grooves to drum to dramatic drum rolls, they add colour and they definitely add
excitement to every performance. Modern bands often feature percussion showcases actually.
So just listen to that energy now.
Good morning. Oh, yes indeed. Sorry about that. Yeah, you could tell it was for my live recording
and that was, oh, I have to laugh at myself now for that one. Somebody put samba in the band
that would be played by the quarry band and that was from one of the live concerts they did
the Royal Welsh College for Music and Drama and what an absolutely brilliant piece of the hat is.
When it's a trip over to the William Furries band that I know for a little bit of a movie
music and it's another cracking piece that's been quite a while and I think it's a piece that
everyone will recognise. Here is the William Furries band on the direction of Mark Rift and they're
going to give us the last of them a weekens.
The William Furries band are under the direction of Mark Rift giving us the last of them a weekens
and you know something I've got all my hand up now and say that it's one film that I've never ever
watched. I don't know why but I've just never ever seen it and I really must check it out because
I know a lot of people have said it's meant to be able to watch this film and you know I haven't
taught no why. I just wanted all the films that I've never really watched.

For the sound that makes you feel alive, come on home where the best bans thrive,
the home of brass band music, sounds of brass radio, the home of brass band music, sounds of brass
radio. Here's another international gem now. It's been played by the ground pop
Colouriband and they're going to give us a march called Zurich march. It's a Swiss inspired tune
that actually became a brass band of favourites.
Here's one thing about brass bands. They look to borrow the
borough from around the world and the Zurich march brings a touch of Swiss flair to the repertoire
proving that, well, good tunes, no nor borders. And speaking of Switzerland, here's the brass band
Mulendorf, if I said that right, which I'm hoping I have, with a piece called Disco Swiss. A
discord inspired a number that's, well, is guaranteed to get you grooving.
Oh, yes, this
discord and brass, absolutely. You know, bands love to experiment with different styles and,
yeah, discord numbers are always a hit at concerts aren't they? I suppose it's all about having fun
and, yeah, keeping things fresh I suppose. Now, your mission should you choose to accept it,
and that's what black guy is saying now as they take us to a little bit of a mission impossible
theme. You know, brass bands, they make even the trickiest tunes sound sort effortless.
Welcome to brass flask. Get ready for the sound. The biggest party in music spinning round and
round. High energy anthems and pop covers too. These amazing brass bands are here for you.
Featuring all the legends you've come to know. Brick house and quarry. Ready for the show.
It's an explosion of power. A pure shock wave of fun. So turn it up loud because the blast has begun.
24 hours a day. Seven days a week. The home of brass band music.
Signs of brass radio. Hold on to your hearts now because here is the
brass band with a saber dance. A whirlwind well of notes and definite excitement.
Oh yes indeed, a little bit of a saber dance. A real test of the band's agility, fast,
furious and definitely full of flair. It's a sure stopper that never ever fails to impress.
Well, looking at the time cannot believe it. We've got roughly about 10 minutes left of today's
sure. Today's sure has flown by so quickly. And well, let's bring things back up to date again
with another modern pop hit. We're going to go back to the Australian band, the Dalesford Community
Brass. So they're going to entertain us yet again with the version of a cold plays, a yellow
proof that brass bands, well, they can tackle any genre.
From a cold play to a Dell, today's bands are always adding new hits to their repertoire.
It's what keeps things fresh and definitely brings in new audiences. Plus, well, it's just
plain fun isn't it? Well, let's swing our way towards the finish line now with another big band
piece. A big band explosion being played back with the black dyke band because, well, you can never
have too much swing. And it's a great way to close down a sure.
And just like that, our two-hour brass band Wednesday Live has come to a close. Thank you for
joining me on this musical adventure from classical matches, from classic matches to disco groove,
from community bands to world champions. We've celebrated the joy, the energy and sheer fun
of brass band music. I'd like to say a huge thank you to all the bands and solos feature today,
and to you, my wonderful listener. If you enjoyed the show, telly friends, show your favourite
moments online and please keep supporting your local bands and let's keep brass banding alive.
Until next time, I'm Peter signing off with Keep smiling, keep tapping those at
talls and remember, every day is better with a bitter brass. Bye bye for now.
