Oh yes! How great is it folks! The LSU Tiger Football Team now ranked 8th in the nation. Returns to action tomorrow night right here on WWL and the LSU Sports Radio Network. Chris Blair the voice of the Tigers joins us now live from Baton Rouge. Hey Chris! Dave how are you man? Good to talk with you. Man it's so great the excitement's back. It's so great the swagger's back. It's so great that the buzz is back isn't it? Yeah man I tell you what it was a long wait. I said to a lot of people leading up to the game last weekend that you know for LSU going back to Coach Kiffin being hired on you know November 30th of last year. LSU got kind of an extended talking season as we like to call it and it was nice to finally put that all behind us and get between the lines
be inside at Tiger Stadium. I know we had a little bit of a delay due to the weather but nobody left and it was it was a memorable night. I ran into a lot of Tiger fans. I did last night at the Lane Kiffin show and you know there's some people who have been to a lot of games there and they've got some great highlight moments highlight games over the years but they said that one's one of the the ones that stands up there it was just a whole culmination of again that long wait to finally see it and then to get the result you did against the team that you played was certainly a night to remember. Yeah and I think it was almost fitting that after all of the anticipation all of the buildup all of the waiting we had to wait a little bit longer and I think some great memories memories were made during the lightning and rain delays that some of the amazing videos that have come out of the student section singing along with purple rain in the downpour and and some of the activities
outside the stadium that made it to social media. I mean people made the most of it and kept themselves and entertained and excited right up until we finally got that game and then the game did not disappoint. Yeah I mean again coach Kiffin has said now for many many weeks leading up to the game that they practice extremely hard to one of the things I noticed you know through spring ball and certainly during fall camp is it is it's a lot of work. I mean it's a chaotic loud lively and very fast moving practice every single day in fact you know he talks about Fridays where a lot of teams kind of have a walk through unless you does that on Thursday and then on Friday they kind of ramp it back up again hoping to hit the crescendo on Saturday nights because he sees it as a performance number one win the game but number two put on a performance that whether you've been to Tiger Stadium a hundred times your entire life or whether you're coming for the first time or whether or not you're watching or listening wherever you may be you're going to get a show
and again that's the challenge for LSU tomorrow night against the Louisiana Tech team that certainly feels good about what they did last week and hopefully you get that same type of performance because as I said I mean you I don't know if you could have scripted it any better I know coach Kiffin told me yesterday that late touchdown stuck in his crawl a little bit but but other than that I mean I don't know that you could have scripted a better start to the lane Kiffin air in the start of this season. Yeah the early interception the late touchdown probably could have lived without those but that's all right because everything in between was definitely everything anyone could have hoped for out of the SLSU Tiger football team in the Kiffin era debut. 100% and you know again he said it on Monday look don't let the opponent regardless of who it is you know change your mindset about being hungry for a win and he you know that was a message to the team and that's certainly a message to all of
us you know Louisiana Tech as I said they come in eighty to six against Northwestern State and I get it it's it's a division one FPS versus FCS but it's still hard to be efficient and score 80 points I mean there's only 60 minutes in a game and there's not a whole lot of mistakes when you watch that game film as far as what Louisiana Tech did coach Kumbi I think does a very good job with the the Mike Leach air raid which is again to me I think for defensive coaches and defensive players a lot like going up against the triple option I mean you got to be super disciplined you got to have attention to detail you can't let your eyes get in the wrong place because suddenly you'll be out of position and a six yard pass will turn into a 70 or 80 yard pass so he's trying to keep them locked in against Louisiana Tech and hopefully the fans as we heard yesterday it's another sellout so we should have another great atmosphere all day long leading up to the kickoff around six thirty two six thirty four tomorrow night
you know you talk about the lesser opponents and it is sometimes you worry about butts in the seats and fans in the stands but I think it does speak volumes that it's supposed to be and expected to be a full house against clearly lesser opponent when LSU is favored by what thirty one and a half points yeah I mean again I look at it from a standpoint of you know coming into this year Dave everybody wanted to see an explosive offense a high-flying offense and for a number of years they wanted to see that nasty LSU defense that just kind of imposes its will for you know four quarters and sixty game minutes and you saw that against the team who has two national titles one in fourteen and one in sixteen and is played for a couple others and has certainly been one of the top programs over the last ten fifteen years they just completely dismantled them so again I don't know that it matters to the opponent is you want a high-flying
offense you want a dominating defense they showed you they can do that now it's up to the players tomorrow to do that again and do it next week and do it for the next uh... you know two plus months but I think that if that's what you've been looking for that was delivered on Saturday and deservedly so I think that's why this place is going to be rocking tomorrow night as well and I know that Lane kiffin and the rest of the staff will not let these football players overlook this opponent a lot of people are saying what if it's a sleeper game what if you know they're looking ahead at the ninth ranked kiffin's former Ole Miss rebels on the road for the next game and that's not i just can't imagine any scenario in which they would lose the focus on the task at hand tomorrow night well again i agree with you and certainly if you've been around the football building the last uh... well since sunday actually
uh... that message has been allowed and clear it's also been allowed and clear practice every single day uh... they have absolutely put their nose to the grindstone they have not let off the gas at all uh... and so again who knows what happens when bootleets ball tomorrow night but there's no way that anybody in that program hasn't been told numerous times that you have not arrived you've done nothing you're one and oh uh... with eleven more regular season games to come so if you think you've arrived and if you've been paying attention to social media and every all the talking heads of college football bragging about what you did on saturday uh... you're probably not going to get a lot of playing time if you don't give a hundred and ten percent uh... against everybody that you play uh... so i i i'm with you i have a hard time believing that the focus is not on lewisian attack uh... and then they'll turn the page once that game is over early sunday morning talking with the voice of the tigers you'll hear him calling the game on the lsu sports radio network right here on ww well
saturday night as lsu the eighth ranked tigers take on unranked lewisian attack you're welcome to join the conversation at five o four two six o one eight seventy if you've got a commoner question for crisp player five o four two six o one eight seventy call us or text us on the oak one heart jullars talk and text line you've used the word loud uh... and the phrase fast moving quite a bit to describe uh... what happens in tiger stadium in this lane kiffon offense i got asked you though and it became evident on television that there was some tension between coach kiffin and the golden band from tiger land during that first game because traditionally we know the band plays between offensive downs but we've not had an offense trying to get the call in almost as the previous play is ending like we now have seen in this first game under coach kiffon was there any conversation discussion or if you heard anything about
and it's even showed him on tv literally hushing the band and telling them to stop playing so i get it uh... i think david's it's we all have to adjust a little bit uh... and again that'll all be taken care of in the truth of the matter is no i'm pretty much stuck in tiger stadium all week long uh... in our studio so i have not heard anything but we had to adjust i mean we talked to a capacitor great number eighteen for l i u gory rush former tiger mean we we go to practice we watched the the way at which they run their program and that as i said earlier practice runs at the same speed that the game speed runs at uh... and so we kind of realize guys were going to have to be very um... you know uh... precise and quick with what we're trying to get in because they're going to line up extremely uh... extremely fast and again i think everybody's got to get i just as that for fans it's hard to really celebrate a uh... a play that that isn't in the end zone because before you look up you know the next nap is coming so i think all of us are going to have to adjust to the speed of that we've
all seen some some tempo from from previous teams here at ls u but not quite uh... the warped speed which uh... coach wise and coach kiffin wants to run this and i'll also add that to me was one of the most impressive things to things to me i took away from saturday's game and one was the the defensive speed um... and it hasn't been there in in quite a while and and it was just incredible to watch the number of gold helmets that were in the right position took the right angles and and just flat out looked way faster than anybody climpson had on the field second part on the offense speaking to the work speed of how they move things i was impressed with the way that ls u would run a play player would get tackled whether he got a big gain or a short gain and immediately ball is tossed to the official and they are springing back to the line and i got a theory about it and i'm going to try to confirm it a lot has been made of the basketball hoop and the fire extinguishers and all the things that go on on the sideline uh... with coach kiffin's team including
ls u and i think it's kind of a deal he's made with the players look when you're in between the lines we're moving fast we got no time to celebrate after you pick up a first down if you get a thirty five yard catch in the middle of the field that's great you need to handle ball get back to the line because we want to snap that ball in the next ten to twelve seconds and i was impressed at the discipline by the tigers to do that over and over and over again i know there was one unsportsman like the came after one of the scores one of seven touchdowns on the night uh... but i think there's a deal that basically says hey guys we're gonna run fast no celebrations no pointing for the first down no you know putting your hand to the ear to hear the crowd you get tackled you sprint back to the line of scrimmage now once this drive-ins in the end zone come on over to the sideline don't the basket ball fire up the fire extinguishers do all that you want to do but you cannot do it inside the lines and uh... that to me was one of the impressive things about how fast this team moves and
frankly we had to adjust in the broadcast booth and the fans are going to have their just being ready to watch the next play and that includes uh... the great golden band from tiger land so i'm sure there'll be adjustments and and we'll see those tomorrow night and if there are future traditions that have to get altered or change some fans may be upset but as long as the team was winning i think they'll be okay with slight changes in those traditions you talked about between the lines versus outside the lines on the sidelines and what can happen there was also obviously been a lot happening off the field you can't take players the way you used to be able to and literally put them in a bubble and keep them from seeing and hearing the outside world they all are going to have exposure through their smart phone social media and everything else how are things in your estimation going in keeping the players focused on the game and not all the outside activities all the news that is surrounding the program and everything else
you know it's interesting uh... was talking to some some people some fans long time fans and about that very thing last week leading up to the clenching game and you know one of the interesting points that was brought up was let's give some credit to nicks savin and bear with me for a moment so coach savin comes here and eventually puts ls u on a path to upgrade their facilities one of those being the football operations center and that thing has grown it has been renovated and one of the reasons i think that it was very important for coach savin and it has been for all the other coaches that david if you are inside that football building that may be one of the more insulated buildings in the state of louisiana if you're in there and you want to be in there for you know getting the hair cut at the barber station or playing video games in the teen lounge or practicing uh... recovering whatever the case may be you may be as far away from the rest of the outside world is any place i know of on ls u's campus and i think that's by design and you've heard coach savin say
at every stop along the way you gotta get rid of the rap boys and you got a block out the noise and i think he was able to see that if you really want to be able to do that and keep your team focused you have facilities like ls u has now of course every major program has facilities like that now uh... but i i think you you can't as you pointed out everybody's got a phone in their hand everybody hears the talking head everybody's got social media and that's great um... but i think that the reason i didn't think it would be a huge distraction for the players is i think they just took the approach of it's ls u versus the world and the only thing you can do you can't fight on social media that's a lost cause the only way you can do it is go out on the field and and show what you can do and again one weekend of this season i would argue ls u did that better than any team in the country uh... and i would argue they've done it better than any team in the country against the opponent they played uh... up to this point in the season including week zero week one and even the midweek game uh... last night in that lopsided win for my amy against
the team that had no chance to play against my amy so i i just don't think that i just don't think it's as big a deal for the players um... as maybe some people thought it would be and obviously i could be wrong uh... but it certainly didn't show last week and i don't think it'll show tomorrow now he really does seem like and feel like that all of the things that should be done need to be done had to be done were done and that the players on this team do understand what their task and role is and how to execute the plan and hey i think you're right we saw a lot of the mighty not looks so mighty we saw a lot of those who we thought we're going to be at the top of the hill look like maybe they'd slip down the hill a little bit on the flip side ls u i think looked even better than most of us expected them to look this past saturday night yeah i would agree with you and again we talked about it just a few moments ago you know is there a distraction this week well again they were able to handle
last week with flying colors this week is coach kiffon said on monday you kind of flip it i mean starting saturday night all through sunday and just about every day this week you've heard nothing but incredible praise put on the performance of ls u can anybody play with him can anybody beat them are they the best team in the country so it kind of switch from the negative to all the positive but for a player and for a coaching staff it's the same thing you've got to keep that out the people who praise you today or the same people going to tear you down tomorrow and so that's the challenge this week it's a different challenge but you still have that challenge you got to go out play the game you got to win the game christ player we look forward to hearing you saturday night as the tigers take on luiziana tech at tiger stadium looks like the weather is going to be well i don't want to jinx it but right now the forecast is most of the rain will be done by game times let's hope that's the case we don't have any more lightning or torrential downpours always a pleasure so glad that you join us on friday's to help us get ready for saturdays here on ww well
