Marlins Rewind: 9/6/26 Marlins vs Cubs

0:00All right, very good Monday morning to you. Happy Labor Day, 2026. Nice win for the Marlins on Sunday afternoon. They beat the Cubbies 10 to three to salvage 172 and 72 for the recap for Sunday afternoon. Here's a radio voice of the Marlins, Jack McMullen. I think this one was the best one this weekend, huh? For sure. Yeah, for sure. 10, three, the Marlins. They get the win over the Chicago Cubs. They salvage the series. They avoid the sweep. And again, they put up 10 and eight of which on the starter play homes who came in with an ERA on the year in the very low twos and just about 80 innings. Jack McMullen, AJ Ramos here with you to break this thing down offensively. This was exactly what the Marlins needed after being stymied over the last couple of days. What a cool offensive showing today from the fish against a really talented arm in hopes. Yeah, and they what they did was they they allowed homes to beat himself. They didn't expand the zone. That was one of the things that at homes likes to do is expand the zone guys are trying to hit balls that are just out of the zone. They pound them into the ground. I mean,

1:01they allowed them to walk walk them and then when they did, they got on base. I think of that double steel between was it Marcy and Bert? Yeah. That double still put him in in scoring position applied pressure to homes. And then the Marlins capitalize on that. I mean, that's one of the biggest things that I feel like is is that this offense capitalize on the homes, mistakes, put pressure on them. And that was that was what's been missing. Is them being able to apply pressure and continue to build off that and tonight and today they're able to do that? Yeah, no doubt about that. And this was such a great day at the ballpark here on this Sunday afternoon. Obviously, the Marlins approved a nine and three in the till uniform. So they've been great in the Sunday teals here. But Josh Beckett immortalized the Marlins legends Hall of Fame. Tyler Phillips was good as the starting pitcher five innings of three run ball. The bullpen did its job as well. But the overall five AJ Romus at the ballpark today, it just seemed like was outstanding around Beckett and just the performance from the fish. It's a great crowd. Yeah, from Beckett coming out to, you know, everyone celebrating him. And then for the Marlins to come out with this firepower,

2:05with this energy going into this very important week, they're going to be playing against the Metz and they got the Dodgers here. So you want to make sure that you continue to build off of this. This is the game that you can build off because of the amount of guys that were coming through. I think of Jacob Marcy, who is hitting the ball to obviously feel looking good out there. So no hot staying hot, birds staying hot. Both of those guys had two hits, both of them had homers. So I think with those guys continuing to come along Kyle Stowers is hitting the ball well. It's starting to shape up to where hopefully they can get on another little hot streak before this season ends. And if they do that, who knows who knows what happens? No doubt. Joe, how was the offense? Maybe contagious this afternoon? Um, you know, just rallying, rallying hits together, putting guys on, taking good ABs, you know, getting walks when we needed to. And you know, we're all doing it in the right time. So collectively, it was a great group job by the whole guys. Back out with you. You see Shaw running down the first base side. You're covering. What do you see there? How are you able to? Yeah, honestly, really shock everyone. Yeah. I mean, I mean, like, it's just, I guess it's a new rule where like the ball gets passed. And, you know, you take a, like a turn or like a give a movement towards second base. That makes you a runner. And so you're not like, you can't, you can get tagged. So I was just remembering it happened earlier in the game. And the guy didn't do it. But I was like, all right, let me just encased do it to tag them and he was safe. And then he did the turn and he just walked back to the back. I was giving the ball, giving the ball, tag him out. So, um, just kind of understanding the rules and how

4:11that works. Are you like quietly saying, give me the ball, give me the ball, because you don't, or do you think that he could realize in that moment? I set a pretty loudly to Griff just to make him give me the ball. Uh, but, you know, I think, I think in that moment, if he's running back, then he understands what's that stake or what's going to happen. Um, and I didn't see him running back. So just, it was like, Hey, give me the ball and he gave me the ball and tagged them out. It's hard to explain that. You did that very well. Last one for you. The Phillies are red socks in this team. All those teams are going to the post season. How do you feel like you guys have stacked up against these team? For sure. I mean, we've been playing great baseball together. Um, you know, a couple of tough losses in that mix. Um, but, you know, I think that we're in a good spot. We continue to do what we've been doing, playing good baseball, having our offense, create runs, create chaos, as you, as they say, um, and, you know, have our pitching staff just do what they do. So I think that all those come together. You know, we're a pretty good team. Really tough team to beat. Thanks, Joe. No problem. Thank you. All right, Jack. All right. What we're going to play is something gritty at the outset here because the Marlins, they struck first with two in the bottom of the second, but it doesn't happen without a double steel kick started by Jacob Marcy. Two one. Both runners go Kelly fires the third head first stop for Marcy. It's not in time. Jacob Marcy got a great jump. Bert was the trail man and it's a double steel. The Marlins lead the world in that and the runners at second and third double play out of order and advantage count for Mac. It's three balls in the strike. And on that three one pitch, Joe Mac had an RBI ground out to push the fit fish in front. One nothing. A hitter later. Otto Lopez. He doubled up the Marlin advantage. And the O1 out of the ground ball past the dot of the shorts that Warner in the left for a base hit and another run comes in. Otto Lopez and RBI single. It's two nothing fish on play homes here in the bottom of the second. But Chicago would have a response to sacrifice fly from Pete Crow Armstrong and then a double play ball rounded into by Nico Horner. But a run came in to

6:20tie this thing at two. But then in the bottom of the fourth team leading 24th for Big Bird. Yeah. First pitch. Bert. He hits high in the air out to left field. That's pretty deep. Taylor is back at the track. He leaves up. It is gone. A high arcing Homer lands in the Marlin ballpan. It's a beauty of a bomb for Burns. His team leading 24th and the fish jumping front again. Three two in the bottom of the fourth. Well, Otto Lopez. He nearly had a homer, but it was robbed by Tyrone Taylor to end the inning. And then the possible National League MVP did some National League MVP type of things. And Pete Crow Armstrong. What's going on? Pete Crow Armstrong. Yes. Well, down the right field line is twisting. It's a fair ball and it's gone. And it's number 40 for him.

7:22Pete Crow Armstrong got a sweeper over the heart of the plate. He dropped the bad head on it and annihilated it. The MVP chance. Raine down. Cubs fans are bowing to him. One eleven off the bat. Sizzle down the right field line and his 40th home run of the year ties this game. It's three in the top of the fifth. But the fish would gain the lead on a bases loaded hit by pitch. A Griffin Kona. One one. Kona takes a load in that. Yeah. Yeah. It was a cutter that clip maybe is big toe. It's a bases loaded hit by pitch and the Marlins jump right back in front. Line keeps on moving bases. Stay loaded. Still nobody out. And it's four three fish in the bottom of the fifth. And then one of the big swings. A two run single from the former Cub prospect in an acquisition via trade by the Marlins this offseason from the Cubs. Oh, and Casey one oh from Holmes. Casey with a pout. Oh, that eats up the first baseman push and it gets

8:24in the right front base hit. Kona first at third. Sinoha in from third. And the trailman stowers in from second. Turf monster wins. It was just a funky hop on Michael Bush. He was playing it on the backhand, but it bounced right over the top of him. He wasn't expecting it. And it's a two run single for Casey. It's six three fish in the bottom of the fifth. Now, Ariberto Hernandez made it seven three to effectively chase Clay Holmes from the game. Three one. Ariberto lines one into center. That down for a base hit. And another run get a come in his score. Pro Armstrong flicks it in, but Griffin from third. Casey to second. It's a two RBI day for Perth. And it's seven three Marlins in the bottom of the fifth. A heck of a job from Ariberto Hernandez. Mac would follow with an RBI single as well to tack eight runs on Clay Holmes on his day. Push the ERA to the high twos. And then the

9:26big final blow. Javier Sinoha on the bottom of the seventh. Javier Sinoha smokes it all out to let that back. Now it's gone. Keep ball pouring it on man. Javier Sinoha turned and burned his eighth home one on the year. And it's ten three fish in the bottom of the seventh on a beauty of a bomb from Sinoha. And that is how this one sounded ten three. It was seemingly going to be a back and fourth game. And then you guys break it open in the fifth. What you make of that I think really overall like our you know, clay's tough. You know, we've seen him a number of times in New York last year. And I thought our guys really

10:29had good and they had terrific at bats. I think in particular just forced him onto the plate. And I think it was a day where Clay just wasn't able to strike. You know, as consistently, we just really zoned him up well. And again, guys just put together really really terrific at bats. And it was nice to see us when we got some traffic out there to get some bass hits. And let me say like push the margin but be able to continue to add on. You know, Bert just continues to come through. And it was big hit for Joe. You know, Havi again. So when you look up and down the line up, Griff had good at bats. Paulie had a couple really good at bats. You know, him and Snow out getting that rally started the way they did. So you know, offensively today very very pleased with just the back quality. And it was you know, really nice to see us come through with you know once we had some opportunities. You mentioned a whole bunch of different guys contributed. Yeah, but Bert in particular, I mean it feels like as great as he's been throughout the season these last couple of weeks, he's been really

11:31locked in. Yeah, I mean, I think in this series for him could have gone you know, PCA makes an incredible play on him, you know, jumping up. I think it was, you know, I mean, even like Taylor Taylor, I can't remember if it was Taylor half like, you know, on him again. So like this guy, you know, he hits the ball in the air to the pole side. And you know, that leads to gives you a chance to do some damage. But I think also we're watching he just buttoned up the Shregg zone very well. I think he understands which pitches are going to give him the best chance to go, you know, do some damage and you know, he's even some of his outs right now. There's the swings look terrific and it's great. He can hit anywhere anywhere in the lineup depending on that day. How I want to spread guys out and you know, you're going to get a good at batting. It's going to be a threat in presence when he comes up there. Certainly hope so because I think we've shown ourselves and everyone like numerous times that you're like, but we're very capable offensive. I think you know, you look at the whole

12:33you know, the season in its entirety and like there's, you know, we're, we've done a lot of things, you know, really well. And you know, it does feel like the last three weeks or so, you know, majority of the games are like they have been kind of the previous couple and where they're, you know, they're just very tight and we've kind of just maybe been, you know, a hit or two away from being able to really break through, but we're certainly no, I do that the, the group is capable of that and they've shown that, you know, today, shown it in the past and you know, hope that a day like today where you, you know, you get to take a little bit of a breath sum and, you know, a lot of guys contribute and come through that will, you know, give guys some steam heading into, you know, another big series with the Met's coming here. He always pointed out how he always found the way to being in the game on every game on the other issues, but now for the last month. What does that mean? He's starting to play the games. But what have you seen from having that period doing that he's basically going through his best offensive pressure? Yeah, I think another, I think what he's always done well, he's continuing to do and that's you just, you know, he can get the barrel to really pitch anywhere.

13:33But I think he has this run of success does have some to do with, you know, what he's swinging at and what he's not swinging at. I think he is, you know, he's, he's like, he's, he can go, he gets hits anywhere, but when he gets that ball closer to him, you know, we've seen like the line drive home run. He had one, you know, in Kansas City as well on a similar type pitch, the base hit and the five six hole that, you know, early in counts, he can continue me to stay, you know, more stubborn and disciplined to, you know, what pitch is giving the best chance. I think also we'll allow him to stay off some of the ones that, you know, could lead to some early outs, you know, in some softer contact when he's, you know, got count leveraged. So again, it's, yeah, he should be, he's earned, you know, playing every day. And then not other times that he hadn't, but I think that what he can do now, we know defensively, you know, his ability to move around and offensively just, you know, hard contact and I think just much better overall quality of play to parents. Yeah, that was great. I mean, to back up there and, I mean, all it took

14:38was a little move by the runner and him and Griff to, you know, Mac to be on it and get it and just take a chance, you know, it's no harm in taking a shot in it, you know, that was a big play. I mean, all the outs, you know, in this game to try to throw, you know, throw it in the potential type of a rally. So great for Joe to be in the right spot and have the presence of mind to, you know, just take the chance there with, you know, with Griff and, you know, hope for the best. Sandy was in the bullpen and I mean, I think I didn't talk to Sandy before the game and just said like, here's, I mean, he knows where we're at and I think that this speaks, what I'll say, this speaks a lot to Sandy that I have told him, I said, look, the way this might go today, like I don't know, it might, you know, it might be where, you know, few guys are in this game, you know, early on and we get to the ninth inning and, you know, you close this game out, you know, this game's tied or we're, you know, we're in a safe situation, you know, we go, think you can throw and he didn't even hesitate and he said, you know, absolutely.

15:41So just kind of hung around, you know, five or six in the dugout and said, make your way down there and because again, we are at a place where, I don't know, we have 20 some games left, we still, we have, you know, we have some room to try to make up and I don't know how many guys of his status and would just be like, yep, I'll absolutely, I'll go down there and if that's what's called for today and that helps us, you know, get a win that we need then, then I'll do it. So I'm always, I'm glad it didn't, I mean, it would have been cool to see Sandy, you know, come out, something, but I, I think, you know, it gives him now Tuesday, you know, he's in a great spot for his start. So yeah, he was up for it and look, I don't think anything at this point from here on out is going to be off the table. We just, you know, we need to win games. And the point you can to the map and get the conclusion, but this might be, I think, I mean, look, it's, we, I mean, I know and you guys know that, you know, we've been on a long stretch of

16:41games and have been fairly aggressive with, you know, using guys and throwing guys, whether, you know, some up games, down games and so they'll, you know, if there's a chance that if, you know, Mike has to go, you know, one plus and a couple other guys throw that, you know, just said, Sandy, if I have the choice between you and what I have that, you know, I'll, I'll pick you if you can, you're up for it. So it was once, once we probably got to the, you know, we got into like the seventh or eighth inning with the lead, probably like less likely, but, you know, strange things can happen in the game. So he was down there, you know, ready for that potential. Is it likely that we could see that on the days that should be his life, old and days, moving forward so long as he's feeling the same type of way physically? I mean, possibly. I think it could just be kind of more reacting to, you know, again, where we continue to be in this, you know, how him or other guys, you know, feel when we saw junk do it, not too long ago on a day where he could have thrown a pen. So I think we just have to continue,

17:44I think we have to be incredibly open-minded and I appreciate our players. I mean, all of them, they've, you know, whatever's asked of them, they step up and do, and this may be while maybe not a, this made me a little bit more of a unique ask, but for your, you know, the face of your franchise to be willing to do that, I think it speaks a lot to not only him, but the group in you know, in general, with like they want to win, we all do. We want to try to make a push here, so all hands on deck. But then, getting could spec it and then I'll see us, it had a hole, it's not to say, but before his series here, right? Yeah, it could have been, yeah, it could have been quite the story, but now it's just, it's more of a hypothetical, like, well, it was more of a possibility than a reality. Which is building off that hypothetical, then I guess you mentioned not a lot of stars are willing to step in and do things like that, or at least you don't know how many, just what is his selflessness? Yeah, how do you think that kind of impacts the younger guys? I think you see it in the postseason all the time, you know, right? But it's also, you know, again, it'd been very easy for him to, like, now I'm just, you know, I got to start Tuesday,

18:44I'm just not quite feeling bouncing back, whatever, but, you know, again, he just, he wants to win, and he wants to win here. And so again, I just think that speaks to our group, like, you know, we still have an uphill battle ahead of us, but everyone in there believes that we can go get this done and that to get that done is maybe going to require us to be as, all of us to be, as open mind is flexible and trying to make that a reality. Tyler Phillips, he earned his fifth win of the season. He goes five innings, gives up three on run, he punches out three, he walks one, here was an animated and entertaining, as always, Tyler Phillips. Boys picked me up, you know, they're showing him the bat. I've usually high down that tunnel, but I can hear the, I can hear the cracks, I can hear the cheers. They're picking me up and that's, it's all going to ask for. They did a great job today, so I'm going to, I mean, you're really a bad guy, I mean, it's three runs, or I'm not necessarily happy about that. So we'll get through five, keep the game at a tie game.

19:51I wouldn't call that an accomplishment, but it is keeping the guys in a position to win a game, you know. Personally, just, I thought the execution ahead of the count was a pissport, hung all my breaking balls, wasn't it? Just got to be better with those. Made some pitches when I needed to, got away with some pitches, some pitches got hit. And that's just baseball for you, you know, like, you're not going to be perfect every time, if you were, you'd be sowing, you know. Yeah, I mean, that's just something going into my next bullpen just trying to work on that ahead of the count execution and making sure that we don't, we try not to hang pitches the way that we did, you know, like, especially that, that homer, hanging a pitch to, to, uh, Mr. PCA there, put it on a tee. It's probably going to put a good swing on it. So, um, you know, like, you go out in that fifth inning, you try to attack and to know sweeper over the middle of the plate, you know, trying to get ahead, um, just wasn't executed where I wanted to.

20:56I'm like, yeah, I'm not that, I mentioned PCA's not active. Um, just what's the sense of maybe urgency or like, you know, there's only 18 game remaining, you guys are playing catch up, but you guys are still in it, just what sort of the vibe, like, there's 18 games left. I felt like, it feels like month one to me. Now, uh, I don't know, that's, I hate to give you a bad answer there. Um, I'm a very like one day at a time guy. Um, I don't even, honestly, I don't even know, I don't know how to answer that one. I'm sorry. Uh, like I said, just one day at a time. Um, obviously you want to win every game, uh, but that's how it is from game number one, you know, game one game 150. It doesn't really matter. Uh, you're coming out there, you're trying to take our business. Um, we can't think about what's coming tomorrow, what happened yesterday. Uh, it's just, that's just not setting you up for success. You know, you, that's something like I talked about with, uh, with Moscow. So, um, we talked about hitters, right? Like I've talked about giving up hits. The guys in the past, um,

22:05you can't bring past things with you and you sure, uh, sure, self can't look into the future. You know, it's just one day at a time. We show tomorrow, hitters out their plans, pictures out of their plans, take care of business for me. I'm going to show up, get my treatment, do my lift, do my conditioning, try to get ready for my next start. I'm going to go to the team again. Yeah, I saw him out there. I was, but that's not fair. I was, uh, sandy, uh, sandy is like a very big like inspiration to me. And I've told him that a lot, um, you know, this guy's resume as a picture as a starting picture. That is, is obviously unbelievable. Um, and for him to just be willing to do whatever it takes to help a team win or to help guys out. That's a, that's very admirable of them. Um, I told him, gosh, what happened was that he was against the red socks. Not sure. I think it was like a base loaded like he gets out of it, right? Like, everybody loves analytics. Everybody loves like stuff and whatever it is.

23:09Um, and something that I've seen out of him and I told him was like, hey, like, that was, that was big. What you did the other day. I love watching you pitch. I love watching you go about your business. Something that people can't measure and I analytically is a guy's balls and what he's gotten his heart. And I'm sorry. That's the lack of lack of better terms. Like the guy goes out there and he pitches with balls, you know, like, and that's something that I see every day. He comes in to take chair business every single day. And that's something that you can't teach. You know, it's just, it's something that's in his heart. It's in his mind. It's in his way of those, you know. And I love it, man. I love it. I love. I love seeing what he's able to do. I love seeing how he handles situations and for him to go out there and just be willing to do whatever. It's really cool to say. And it's also more of a passion somewhere. Yeah. It's, it's leading by he's a big like leader by action. You know, and that's something I see and I aspire to be. You know, I've only been in this game for a short time. And the major league level and just I would only wish that I could be a fraction of what he is.
