Our Favorite Proverbs: Proverbs 16:31

0:00Welcome to your moment of hope. I'm Jen Houston joined by Pastor David and Marilyn Chadwick. We're in a series that we've been calling our favorite proverbs. Today we're going to take a look at Proverbs 1631. And I have a question David. Certainly I'm asking this on behalf of a friend, not myself. But why is gray hair so good? Well, you know, I'm not going to speak to the gals who are listening or around this table who might use a little touch up here in the air to avoid the gray hair. But we will admit that there's something beautiful about gray hair probably ought to say here with Proverbs 1631 gray hair is a crown of glory. It is gained in a righteous life that those who may not have hair on the top of their head aren't necessarily unrighteous. You know, I don't want to suggest that at all because my daddy bless his heart was his bald as a cue ball on the top of his head. Unfortunately my brother Howard and I both were able to keep hours for all of our lives. But the point being, I think,

1:02that there's some things that can only be learned and earned by the ages of the years that pass by. And I think that's what this point's trying to make. I sometimes joke with people that on the top of my hair, it's more gray than ever before. But I earned every single one of them. And I think righteousness is not earned. I think sometimes it is though learned. Righteousness is a gift from God by grace through faith. But also when you learn how to live rightly, you then have a more righteous life because you've learned how to avoid certain potholes that you know you don't want to step in. Again, it's that joke Maryland reviews before with Anna Gray sour now 15 year old granddaughter came to me one time and said, Pappy, that's my granddaddy nickname. How'd you get so wise? And I said by making a lot of mistakes. And that's the truth of the matter. I think with each one of my gray hairs, it's an evidence of something I've learned in life that gives me, I think, a crown of glory so that I'm

2:04wiser than most people younger than I am simply because life has allowed me to live through the year. So gray hair, I'm all for it. I think it's a wonderful gift from God. I hope people when they look at me think that's a guy that earned every single one of them. He's got some wisdom. I want to learn from him. Maryland your thoughts. Well, David, you know how much I love watching Miss Marple series. You know, I got the Christie's famous character. And remember that time that somebody asked her Miss Marple, how did you get so smart? And she looked at them and she said, I got old, you know, and so it's the same principle. And I really think there should, we should celebrate this. I think it was a wonderful song. Psalm 71 18 that talks about this even though I'm old and gray, do not leave me God. I will tell the children and the next generation about your power. And I just think there's so many things that you couldn't do when you were earlier. There's some real value to this season of life. And we encourage people in our church moments. I hope church, if you're younger, find an older person that you can just sit down and get to know and pick their brain. And there is just something because you've got gray hair that give you

3:05wisdom that you can share with other people. And they can pick your brain too because we need each other. You know, when I look in the mirror and see my gray hairs coming in, I'm like, I forget how old I am because I still feel it. I've heard as you age, you still feel so young on the inside, but you know what? We've learned we've lived a lot of life when you start seeing gray hairs sprout. Yeah, and that's why God gave parents to children. I mean, it really is that simple. He gave parents who are 20 to 30 in our case, Marilyn, even 40 years older than our children. And we could guide them well because we had lived life well in our gray hairs were earned. Well, you know, Daddy and I are working on a book together about his life before, during an after-war to and some of his time as a submarine sailor. And we were talking the other day and he said, you know, I still feel young on the inside. He's 98. And he said, I still feel young on the inside. And he said, somebody asked me the other day what I would change. And he looked at me and he said, you know what? I've just decided I like being me. And I thought, if you can say that at 98, that gives encouragement to the generations following after encouraged me for sure.

4:09Well, I encourage everyone to be a part of a multi-generational church because when there is the passion of the young, with the wisdom of the old, you have a great church to be a part of.
