The orbital ring surrounding the "Strobe," a pulsar that emits lethal gamma rays for 100 years, then goes dormant for 100 years. The ruling merchant class uses a neurological parasite called "The Focus" that destroys a person's ability to sleep or feel fatigue, locking their brain into a state of obsessive, hyper-fixated labor.
