PADRES POSTCAST: MICHAEL KING DEALS! Padres CRUSH 15 Hits in 5-0 Shutout Win Over Reds in Opener

Michael King delivered exactly what the San Diego Padres needed Monday night.

King threw six scoreless innings, allowing only four hits with six strikeouts, as the Padres opened their series in Cincinnati with a 5-0 shutout victory over the Reds.

San Diego's offense finally backed up its starting pitching, pounding out 15 hits. Manny Machado went 4-for-5, Ty France finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, Jackson Merrill had two hits and an RBI, Xander Bogaerts drove in two with a huge fourth-inning double, Dustin Harris stayed hot with two hits and an RBI, and Luis Campusano added two hits.

The decisive rally came in the fourth when Merrill opened the scoring with an RBI single, Bogaerts followed with a two-run double and Harris added an RBI single as the Padres exploded for four runs on six hits.

King repeatedly escaped trouble, while Cincinnati finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners.

Kyle Hart then dominated with two hitless innings and four strikeouts, before Wandy Peralta completed the five-hit shutout in the ninth.

The win comes after San Diego had lost five of its previous six despite outstanding recent work from the starting rotation, and it arrives at a critical moment in the National League Wild Card race.
