Beauty editor Perdita Nouril is back with all the latest news and views.
This week we're talking about Perdita's exciting meeting with Euphoria makeup artist Doniella Davy as well as the band new, peptide laden iteration of Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Cream. Perdita also chats about Love Story on Disney + and how the aesthetic is influencing the beauty industry. Plus, a huge collagen study has just been published and we're exploring whether it really is the miracle everyone claims it to be.
Love my weekly catch up with Perdita. She really knows her stuff!
I've never seen you look this glam. You look like Bridget Bardot in the old days.
You really do. I'll take that, yeah. Yeah, look at what's going on.
I have been so funny because obviously we changed the timing so I had and I'm going out tonight
so I had like a tiny play with some makeup because I met the absolutely brilliant fabulous
like incredible makeup artist for Euphoria so she's called Donny Davey. She's got big following
on social media. She's just gorgeous and she has been responsible for all the iconic looks on
Euphoria. So like the glitter tears and the amazing like gemstones and the rhinestones and she has
this incredible range called Half Magic and it's just I think you could get some pieces in the UK
before but I don't think she never really like came across and like they've done this
big all singing all dancing launch in Sephora this week and you can now buy everything whereas
before you could get a few pieces of I think I don't know if it's called Beauty or Look Fantastic
or somewhere but it was always a bit tricky and I remember going to New York I think maybe it was
like two, three years ago with Dove and a couple of the other beauty editors I was with we went straight
to I think it was like Alta and we bought like half the range just because it's so incredible
but yeah it was just really fascinating to talk to her I think that or you know
but even though she's known for these sort of like really sort of high-end like Gen Z glittery
looks she was actually saying like they are translatable and she's sort of showing me like a few
looks and she's giving me some of her products and they're amazing so I was sort of saying you know
like I'm nearly 40 and like I love glitter but I think I feel like it has to be an occasion like
Christmas or like a big night out or something like that yeah and she was like I just don't want
women to feel like that she was like it doesn't have to be a big event she was saying that she
runs to the grocery store sometimes with like a load of glitter on and actually I just really
loved that I think that she's really she's really bought that beauty in a fun way after years of like
you know clean boring new makeup I'm so relieved I feel like I look around me and I think I've
said this before and I feel so different to like Gen Z because Gen Z do they don't wear much makeup
and I I feel very removed from them culturally almost because of the makeup I wear because it's
how kind of we were bought up so I like I really want the fun to come back and I would love to see
like the younger people like really piling on the glitter and just having fun like letting go
a bit having fun well honestly if you look at her Instagram and so and she's been with sort of
loads of people in Sephora this week and she's gone like full glitter mode on them they look
incredible absolutely she showed me so she's got this this lovely product called glitter park and
it's really I don't know if you can see it but it's really sort of like a a new deal most like brownie
glitter and you can just like dab a little bit of that over over your eyelids and you're done
like it's so easy I think she's really kind of created a product range that doesn't feel scary
that doesn't feel too young um yeah I know I'm such a big fan of her she's so talented
she was like a big makeup artist on loads of shows she did like the underground railroad
before she did euphoria and yeah she's just amazing it's just what I think what's amazing about
her is she created I mean she was such a massive part of euphoria that look he often I think the
makeup artist isn't really recognised they just do their job and no one is here they are but she
was a massive part of the success yeah hugely and I was speaking to her about that I was like
did you ever envisage that you know like culturally it would be this or seismic shift in beauty
towards this kind of fun new way of wearing makeup in a time it did feel very you know sort of like
nude lip um and she said not no she had no idea um it was only when she started to like
put a few looks up on her Instagram and she was then like inundated with more requests that she
was like oh okay wow people really dig this look and she said that she really liked the fact that
people got the emotional play behind it you know they understood like the emotional context and
meaning of the looks because yeah euphoria is filled with that but yeah she was really cool and
she's got a great I think if you struggle with winged eyeliner she has created the most amazing
winged eyeliner product it's like it's sort of it's not like a nib it's almost flat and I think
that's why I've created quite a good wing yeah I mean yeah it's a really good wing and I never
see you with a wing you you're for me like a lipstick girl oh my god yes so yeah I think it's
definitely worth seeking out go and have a little bit of a play um yeah since the for her she's
great watch her videos what else have I got in terms of makeup okay so I don't know if you have
heard any of the noise about Disney's new programs it's called a love story I feel like I'm
really missing out culturally here I feel like where where have I been but now I haven't heard
the noise there has been so many features and sort of like commentary pieces and fashion pieces
and beauty pieces about this show because of the because of the people that are in it so it's
based on a couple so Carolyn Busset and her husband which was John F Kennedy Jr and they were just
I mean they were gorgeous I can't I can't kite with how beautiful they are if you go and
google them there's loads of pictures of pictures of them he's just like this gorgeous heartthrob
and she's like like beautiful this long gorgeous blonde hair um anyway it's it's called a love
story has a tragic ending um I'm not ruining it when you google it you'll find out but they they
were killed it's very sadly killed in a playing crash it's really awful and they were so
and he was I think 38 she was 33 but she was like a real it girl in the 90s in New York so she
worked for Calvin Klein and she was really responsible for making Calvin Klein this like super cool
brand in the 90s so I think she helped Calvin Klein pluck Kate Moss from obscurity and do that
famous black and white campaign when I think Kate Moss was only 15 and helping to create CK1
and obsession and yeah she was amazing one of the biggest cultural moments in the 90s
un yeah unbelievable and I'll be honest I really didn't know that much about it so they were they
died in 99 so I wasn't super old then I don't really remember reading about it or knowing about it
um but I've got some like friends who were like said when they were 20 they just they loved
Carolyn Busset but anyway if you go and google her look she's she's famed for her aesthetic so she
would wear lots of like gorgeous like um black outfits like slip dresses and then like a white shirt
and a like a black um yeah she she was incredible so do you think maybe this is going to really
influence the way we we dress and look I think already there's but I've seen so many fashion
pieces about how to get the Carolyn Busset look and it's a really kind of cool I can't look to be
there and she she was sort of very minimal so she never really wore any jewelry and she kept her
makeup like really simple but she was kind of famed for a red lip and not much else
um and I think if you look at her it didn't make me think oh this is why I'll always be a red
lip girl but yes there's been a few features about what lipstick did she wear
annoyingly of course it's an American brand from a brand called face stock home have you ever
heard of that brand nothing I hadn't either are they still around oh yes still around and
apparently get their lipsticks for like eight dollars which is amazing um but the next best
thing and rumored obviously because nobody really knows like I think some people do but obviously
we can't confirm um but the next best thing is bobby brown's crushed lip color in Ruby and it's
sort of this lovely like ready bricky red um and then Mac spice lip liner and that's one like
that's one of my go-to's but yeah okay yeah go watch it on Disney I mean it's a bit cheesy I won't
like but it's kind of I love it better cheese I mean I'm still I'm still in Bridgeton made
and I'm still getting overwhuttering heights to be fair so I'm kind of I'm I am I'm I'm ready I
am ready ready for another loves another tragic love story ready for another track I don't know if I
I cried so horribly at the end of weathering heights I couldn't stop I was just sniffling
and snorting I haven't seen it yet but it's got it got panned didn't it by the critics
well say there was this whole thing I think about people saying it wasn't true
to the novel and I think the whole point of it was it was never meant to be true to the novel it
was how she interpreted it and saw it as a teenager um the the director and so I think if you take it
just for what it is if you go in and just experience it as a beautiful piece of film then I think
it's great I think if you go in expecting to see a very true version of the book then no you're
going to hate it but just say what it is it's it's amazing yeah it's really amazing and it's
hot and it's the acting good I imagine so with those two I think it's really good I really do
I was really impressed I just I hate art and I hate all the snubbery I think people sometimes do
it just to make a point I agree I agree and also it's like oh don't take it too seriously who can
like what I thought was because it's Theo Fennel's daughter isn't it who um is it Theo Fennel's daughter
here who is it yeah it is Theo Fennel um that's created it yeah I think it's Theo Fennel's daughter
or is it what's his name emerald Fennel is the director and that's it yeah she I mean her vision
and like the way the the photography the way she did it was is absolutely incredible like incredible
she's super talented so yeah yeah she's also um I know this because one of the school moms at
my daughter's school she is a sound engineer and she worked on the film and as she said the
emerald Fennel was so lovely and especially to like female crew members and she would pay for like
the moms so that their kids can come and stay on set yeah I remember her telling me like I think
this was like three years ago when she was doing the sounding she was like oh I've just been doing
with the ring height so then mod Fennel and she was actually amazing she really takes care of her
team and nice she's really accommodating around moms that work on the set which I thought was
lovely I thought it's really really lovely yeah it's nice to hear that you see a lovely female
director I just I love this
what else have you been up to good news for Charlotte Tilbury lovers
what's going on anyone that loves the iconic magic cream which isn't me
no no no I I never got it the whole thing was it was all magic as in like complete
bullshit but I tell you what I do love I never liked it because it's too oily for me and
it just I found it too occlusive I loved magic water cream really loved it I do think
it's not overpriced but I really rate that especially if you don't get on with the original
but for those that love the original and I know millions of women do
she has reformulated it I think the first time in its history and she has added peptides
and everyone's favorite ingredient so they're called I mean she's given it a name recover stem
I think it's a peptide blend and she's got over a hundred in there
we're okay and it does to be fair with all Charlotte Tilbury products they do have some good
clinicals to back it up I think you get to a point where you think okay I've had this iconic
moisturizer and it had a great story behind it and it was all you know it was very very
showbiz but actually you watch the rest of the beauty industry and you see the
formulations that are coming out the ingredients and you probably realize people probably aren't
going to choose this over some of the other options so I need to do something and I get it
and like it's a great decision absolutely good decision the right one I agree and actually
I think brands it's a little bit like how technology worked you know how Apple are always
upgrading things and like you know how Microsoft are I think like the beauty industries
sort of very good at that they're always looking to improve their products so yeah that's good
I've told you one that I have tried that I don't love also gave me really bad spots was
hilariously it's for your barrier support but the ordinary the ordinary soothing and barrier
supports him it's pink and I was like oh this a few goes no awful didn't like really it hasn't
isn't that funny it's like it's sometimes you buy something you're like this is absolutely
going to be the answer to everything and it just isn't and that's why I think it was skinking you
just have to try and try until you find your thing and it doesn't and sometimes it doesn't really
matter what brand it's for almost just like you will find something and it works for you and then
it might work for you for a year it might work for you for a month and then you change it up again
there's no one I'm always on yeah no there isn't yeah I think yeah the skin is so changeable but
that's interesting because I thought that was meant to be like amazing so there we go yeah just
now didn't agree with me and then the other big bit of skincare news this week that I have seen
it's been important a fair bit but is a big collagen studies come out yes I'm fascinated to hear
about this yeah well I think it's kind of funny so I think depending on what camp you are sitting
people feel vindicated either side and I think it's I think it's because the people that love
collagen have gone see I told you it does work and then the people that think it doesn't don't
believe in it have gone see I told you it does it it's proven now to not really help with wrinkles
so a long story short the findings which were published in the aesthetic surgery journal
they analyzed data from 16 reviews and 113 randomized controlled trials that featured
8000 people around the world so it's big it was a big bit of data they analyzed
and they looked at a bunch of different health metrics from skin health measurements to
oral health and they even looked at things like your muscles and loads of like symptoms of
osteoarthritis and pain and stiffness and how it helps stuff like that in a nutshell where skin
health is concerned they said that collagen shows a consistent clinically meaningful signal
where connective tissue matters so it does give better skin hydration and elasticity it also
really helps with osteoarthritis pain and you can get modest but measurable gains in lean mass
and strength however and they did say it was not a miracle product but when it's taken consistently
it does it like a sensible low risk supplement for people who want to support skin joint and muscles
as they age collagen may be best positioned not as an anti wrinkle quick fix but as a foundational
dermal support for individuals seeking holistic skin maintenance and I think really reading between
the lines is what sort of journalists have and like beauty experts have always said that it's
not a miracle cure it can it might help a little bit and if you've got the money and you want to
give it a go fine but there's also no point taking it if you're not going to wear your SPF and you're
still going to not eat your healthy diet and drink enough water and do any exercise and I think
it's that and we're faced with these really aggressive marketing tactics and adverts make it seem
like it's miracle fix and it's just not the only reason I'd ever take it and I don't take it again
because no one ever talks about the fact that it can exacerbate anxiety and I just hate the
funnel most most brands don't even know about this and it is a fact it can it can you about that
yeah it can it's um oh god it's about the kind of the proteins that can get to the brain it's
really it's I think it's about balancing those proteins I to be fair I don't even get it but
it but it is there if you need it in fact bear biology and the brilliant nutritionist Charlotte
Foro Green has done a great article explaining this but um I think that you know I would take it
probably for more for health reasons like for things like my joints and my bones like that I'm
far more interested in that I couldn't care less about whether I have wrinkles or not but I think
if you just want something for a beauty fix then I mean you know no don't don't you know I'm
do just go and get Botox and you know what I mean don't bother with the collagen completely
and I think also if you're taking it really hoping it's and also the study was sort of explicit
in a sense they were like it really does it does help with a bit of elasticity it does help with
skin hydration yeah and it doesn't help with wrinkles and it doesn't help with skin roughness
and it just it just won't help those things so I think yeah yeah it I mean it's wild I get
asked it maybe I'd say three times a week because people see it everywhere and do you know
what's really interesting when I um was working with um outtrian vitamin C they get those results
they have brilliant results with skin and hair there's no collagen in it but the vitamin C makes
a difference so I think yeah it just got to be realistic there was no miracle I'm afraid it's
really sad but there was yeah oh my god I feel like you've been that like the proper like edited
I felt your editorial powers like through the sound waves oh thanks babe I think also because we didn't
I had we we didn't get to do last week so I felt like I do the stuff I need to pay there's so much
to catch up on one now I've really enjoyed it and I love the fact as well that like me you're afraid
you're not afraid sorry just to say what you love and what you don't love and just because you
don't love something doesn't mean somebody else you know for them it could be the best thing ever but
we like to be honest don't we an outspoken yeah we do and we like to wave through the bullshit
so there's a lot of it we do because there's so much out there I think next episode maybe we
should be like let's wave through more bullshit yeah well it's been a pleasure to always have
an amazing night out with your friends they're going to love your makeup and we'll speak next week bye
