3:08We must acknowledge the establishment we are in. This is the new Hebron's location. It's got a rich wood location vibe to it but it is bigger, it is better, it is wider, it is more spacious, the bar is spectacular, the back patio is spectacular, there's a massive bar on the back patio, I swear the TVs are bigger, it is big and we are so excited to be. It's an amazing new location, they did a fantastic job and encourage everyone to come out and check it out. You're right. I think you say 57 TVs, I think there's like 107. I think that's true, I think that's true and it is very, there's a lot of open space here. It's really cool, no matter where you turn, you see a TV, it's going to be great for the football game tonight. And whether you're at the bar inside or at the bar on the back patio, they are going to take care of you. They've taken care of us for now. A sixth year, Mike Lison confirming this is your number six with long necks and how cool of them to be a part of what we do for now. A sixth consecutive year, we are fired up for a run.

4:10Absolutely. And into the postseason, if not to the Super Bowl. So that's what you're saying basically next like 23 weeks. I'm saying book it, book it, book it. All right, let's go. 5:11There will be a quiz on all of this by the end of the night. Now, some quick details. Mike Gleason informs me that this is our six year with long necks. He then followed that text by saying, I can't help you on how many years this is for the two of you together. But I've done some number factoring. I started doing sports talk in 2009. So this is my 18th season of the round table show. I know I did one of those with Dave Lapham and Bob Trumpy together for a year. And then I believe I did with John Thornton maybe two or three years. So does it sound that we could you and I could be in the neighborhood of 13 or 14? Is that possible? That would take you to like what, 2013 or so? Yeah. Does that win? Do you have an idea of when you would have? I think that's about right. Sounds about right. So we're going to say 13 or 14 years.

6:13Think about that. Holy cow. Man, oh man. In fact, am I correct? In the early stages of this, we went, I want to say we went until eight. Seag did sports talk eight to nine and you drove back to the station to do nine to midnight. So that was 2015, 16 and 15, 16. Yes, I did. Unbelievable. Yeah. We drove back in and did nine. Wow. Yep. All right. Well, happy 13, 13, 14 to us. Absolutely. Absolutely, brother. Man, this is, we have our regular cablecade of guest checking in throughout the evening. Mike Vitraia, Trags coming up at 620 on the Bengals beat. We have Chad Brendel, Bearcat, Journal Talking UC football at 706. Greg Shoemaker fired up to have him back high school football tonight, previewing some games and at 750 Dan Claskins has our fantasy football fix all of that between now and nine o'clock. Let me give you a couple of headlines. Bengals ramping up work on the Buccaneers. We'll get the latest on the injury report with Trags coming up in less than 10 minutes.

7:16Anthony Munoz, ruler of the jungle on Sunday. Let's open an orange kickoff for the season opener tonight. 49ers and Rams down under in Australia kickoff time there. Eight or 10 35 AM 10 35 AM from Australia. Couple of baseball notes. Reds off today opening a Milwaukee tomorrow night inside pitch at 640 with me. Florence Yalls lost game one of their best of three versus the Washington wild things. Last night they hit the road for game two tomorrow night. All the college basketball notes in KU full schedule is out. Miami's full schedule is out. We'll run down some of those matchups later in the US Open tennis. A couple of big ones in the women's semi finals tonight. Coco Gough versus Arena. Rebacana and Jessica Pagula in a rain. As Sabalinka that coming up tonight from flushing. All right. Let's begin here. Let's get to the really important stuff because man, since we last talked with this show. Think of what has transpired. And there were points last season where we will freely admit it became very difficult.

8:17When Joe got hurt, went down the hopes and dreams of the season went down. Joe Flacco brought an infusion to it and excited things. But the reality is they missed the playoffs for the third straight year. But into the off season they went. And from the off season to now rock, it's been knock on wood about as perfectly an executed plan by an organization and performance by an organization. As you could possibly have had you given me a big list of things to check off. This organization was a box checking organization since the end of last season. So I remember in the last show we did, obviously that's a look forward to next year. What needs to happen? What needs to change? And you put forth the question, can the Bengals get this defense better in one off season? And I said no, I did too because I had history on my side. So showing that the Bengals would not make the big moves. They weren't going to train a first round pick. They weren't going to make some splash, something happened in the first three days of free agency. And I didn't think, so now you're left with just the draft.

9:20So I didn't think there would be any way possible to get the amount of players you needed to get with the DeLine questions, all the linebacker questions, some of the secondary questions to get it done. And the Bengals fundamentally changed how they do business. And that is the big headline here, of course, in getting Dexter Lawrence and the amount of attention that was paid. Not just him, boy, a mafia and Jonathan Allen and totally revamping that defense. They get the impossible, Lance, because that is defense unfathomably better than it was last year. I didn't think it'd be done. You didn't think it'd be done. No one thought it did. And now here we are. And that is our starting point tonight, as we look ahead to the season, what is ahead? The last check I saw they are favored. This is hard to believe they are favored in 15 of their 17 games last this coming season. We had to see your expectations at a lot of ground to sort through between now and nine o'clock tonight. We'll check in with Trags, Mike Petrae from CLNS media on the Bengals beat when we come back. He is rocky. I'm Lance.

11:20Mike Petra, you're Trags. How are we doing? Lance, rocky. Thanks for having me for a third year. It should be a lot of fun. I will let you know that I took out my friends to the very establishment you're in. My friends from Boston College in town, the radio crew doing the bear cats. Boston College game last week. They had a blast. Love the drinks. Love the atmosphere. Long-necks in Hebron. It was a fun time had by all. Excellent. Excellent. That is great to hear. All right. Let's start with the Bengals news today. Have you seen update on the injury report? A couple of names popping up is limited today. Yeah. So we don't know the situation yet to the full extent of DJ Turner and his hamstring issue. I hesitate to call it an injury because if it's a tweak or something and they brought it took them out of practice as a precaution on an incredibly humid day on the practice fields

12:23outside Take War Stadium. You don't want to overreact. Certainly it's concerned because he was not on the injury report at all on Wednesday, which leaves you to believe that it happened during practice. He was on the field for stretch, for warm up, for all of that. And then he shows up as limited. So that leads one to believe that the DJ Turner injury or tweak, whatever it is, happened during practice. We'll find out more from his act tailor on Friday after the walkthrough. And certainly if DJ Turner is a part of the walkthrough, the Friday, lighter practice, then we'll know he's probably good to go if he's not. Then there is definitely reason for concern. Shamar Stewart, he showed up on the injury report today after being a full participant on Wednesday. I have a different feel about that one. That may be a situation where they put them through the rigors of a full practice on Wednesday

13:28to see how the knee would respond for the first time in a practice like that in a while. And they're just letting him rest it. And then they either feel he's going to be ready for Sunday or they don't. So that's how I view those two. The rest of them, I think Jamar Chase and T Higgins, good news is they should both be ready to go. BJ Hill and Jonathan Allen were both given rest days again on a very humid day. And some fans, guys, and Rocky, you can chime in on this. May go, you need a, of that day on the first week of the season. Well, when it was as humid as it was today, in full pads, I think the coaching staff would rather have them fully rusted and ready to go Sunday than burn them out on a Thursday full-pads practice. Well, look, they've made it this far without any real serious injuries. Yeah, let's get to the game and get it done.

14:29So try to, you know this. Every Bengals fan feels that this is a special season that is getting ready to take place. But you're in that locker room every day for the last couple of years. When you're on the players, do you feel that they feel like this is a different season? Do you notice anything different in the locker room covering the team this year or the maybe in years past? Yes. I think like Jamar and Chase talked about today, there's a different energy, a different vibe, a different, the word urgency has been tossed around a lot, especially as it relates to Joe Burrow. But definitely there's a different energy, a different urgency throughout the locker room. What I like about this locker room, Rocky, is that there are a lot of leaders who have come in, especially on the defensive side of the ball. And there's more of a business-like approach. Last year because you had two rookie linebackers, you had a rookie first rounder in Jamar's Stewart. You had a lot of guys learning the lay of the land.

15:31And our golden, God bless them. He was kind of the sacrificial lamb in terms of, we're going to try and get these two rookie linebackers up to speed fast. And certainly they didn't start the year with two rookie linebackers just to meet your new junior. But once they decided to move on from Logan Wilson, it was two linebackers for the rest of the year. They paid the price early on in the year. And I think they feel both of them are going to take major steps forward this year, especially when you aren't asking to meet your nice night to play on the ball on the edge. Tracks, I went back today and I listened to the Joe Burrow news conference the Wednesday after that gut punch lost a buffalo last year. It was December. He was down that day. You ask him a question that you said it seems like you've got something on your mind. You seem frustrated. He opened up and was very revealing that day. And I think of then compared to now and just what a different place Joe Burrow is in

16:33right now. I think he's more confident in the roster after the off season of moves that the front office executed. I think that's one reason for that. I think he feels fully healthy. I know Charlie Goldsmith asked this question of Joe Burrow yesterday. Now that you're fully healthy, do you think you've got full use of your mobile skills back? Remember, that was a big part of his game before he got hurt a couple of years back. He was very much a mobile quarterback and could run and could make first downs on, let's say, third and third and five. If guys, if a second area or linebackers were dropping too deep and the whole opened up at the second level of the defense, he was more than happy to take advantage of that. I think Joe Burrow feels now that he can take fuller advantage of his mobility and that

17:33after the turf toes surgery that he had last year, it's had a full off season to heal. I think he feels very much back to where he was in terms of his mobility. So Trags, I think folks feel really good, of course, about the Bengals passing game. They feel much better and feel really good about the defensive line. I think they feel better about the tackling from what we've seen in the preseason. Is there another area where you think that maybe not as talked about as much, but this Bengals unit, whether it's on offense or defense, is vastly improved? I'll give you three areas. I'll give you the short passing game to chase Brown. I'll give you the linebacking group, which I already touched on. I think the punting game, I know Evan McPherson had a great preseason in training camp. Ryan Rico, nobody's talking about the job he did in the preseason. I think Darren Simmons is much more confident in Rico's ability to pin opposing teams back.

18:43We saw that, certainly in the bearer's game, the second preseason game, I think he had five punts, four were inside the 20. I think three were inside the 10. He had a great game. I think that is something that could really help the Bengals early on in the year. Here's my thought. In those three areas that people may not be talking about, you have to take some of the burden off Joe Barrow and the offense early on. Why is that? Because traditionally Barrow and the offense need about a month to get in rhythm. That's the case around the NFL. Look at last night's games in Seattle. Neither team looked remotely close to efficient offensively. The Bengals are certainly not averse to going through that thing sort of struggle. I think we've seen in the past that fans with weapons like Jamar Chase and T Higgins get

19:47impatient. They want Barrow to put up 35 points right out of the shoot. That's just not realistic. Tracks you are all over this is the season begins. You've always been all over this. Tell listeners how they can read what you're writing, watch and listen to what you're talking about and follow you throughout this season. I had a Patrick Mahomes in my pack of football cards. And look at this for my birthday, Fran. This is the box score on the date I was born August 29, 1966. Fred's name, Colonel's framed. How about that? That is really incredible. Yes, so thank you. Wouldn't be the round table show without you from here, so. Exactly, really. Yes, it right in Phyllis. They're so big that they get their own speaker. It's a speaker. Nobody else in the place gets their own speaker. Mike got a speaker and put it right by and they get their own speaker. That's big. No one has ever had their own speaker.

23:51That's huge. Now, as the season goes on, she may start wanting headphones. So what we'll see. And then your plug. Make it to the point where she wants a microphone. I want to be a part of the show. You never know. Let me tell you, if this season goes south, then that's going to happen. They can both do the show. Exactly. I'm on. We did South last season. I'm not doing South again. We struggled through it. You know, if they were to lose on Sunday, then they go to Texas Texas Texas. Yes, use Texas. Are you okay? No, we're there an underdog. That's one of the two games are a betting underdog. Then we'd be staring down the barrel of trying to create a scenario to avoid O and two. So let's not do that. Let's not go down. Don't put that out in the universe. Let's begin with what is exciting us about this team and players we're interested in seeing. And I think I can speak for both of us. I can't wait. The Dexter Lawrence trade, I will never forget sitting on the couch and we were I was watching

24:55a movie with Kelly and I grabbed my phone and I just scrolled on Twitter to get back to present. And the first thing I saw was Charlie Goldsmith piece about the impact of Dexter Lawrence and I'm like, I said, wait, what? And I started looking back and I said, wait a minute. The bet goes just traded to get Dexter Lawrence and rock from that moment on. He has handled everything perfectly and the impact day by day in camp. He was doing something that was being noticed by everybody. And that's the thing. And by the way, my first introduction to Dexter Lawrence was, remember, I was coming out of the hills of Virginia and I'm turning my phone on. I've been going for three days and I see two texts from you and one was like, can you believe it? And next was we got to do a whole draft show with no pick. I'm like, what the station screw up now? That's what I really thought. I have no idea until I got back into the civilization I could get like actual, you know, 5G and found that they had made it trade. But no, to your point, I mean, the animals of NFL history are filled with big time splash

25:59free agent signings that just from the very get go did not work. Albert Haynes worth to the red skins, right? I mean, just some of these from the day one, it's just like, this don't look good. I mean, look, things could change tomorrow. But I mean, he has exceeded the expectations. Just, I mean, as not just as a player, it performed in camp, made plays in camp. Wasn't the guy that was taking 55 days off. You know, he was a locker room guy. I mean, he was a captain. Yeah. I mean, everything about this guy is, is he set up for what we all think is a spectacular season. It's been wonderful. From, from day one, I think there was an anticipation, you know, he'll come in and he'll sign the contract to go back home. They'll see him when the many camps come up and he came and he stayed and he did work. He got a lift in before he talked about the media for the first time. And it's just, you know, there was some, there was the perception of some baggage from the giant situation where maybe he didn't have the best of years. And maybe there was, he was a little bit overweight.

26:59I don't care about that. I only go by what we've seen here and what we've seen here as a guy who was out to have a monster season and what an impact he could have up front on a defense that certainly could use that type of impact. It's what you have to do, right? How many times I talk about you need a defense full of, you know, solid players, but you need three or more game records. And he is the definition of a game record. How many, as you say that, how many times last season do we talk? And even in the past about, you're the opposing team's offensive coordinator and you're watching the tape, the Bengals didn't have a guy. There wasn't a guy since, since they've had him in the past. The Geno Acids or somebody like that, who you had to really think about in your game playing. Now, anybody watching the tape is thinking, holy crap, they've got Dexter Lawrence. Yeah. You get the impression that the coordinators watching the film going, well, we can try that. And then they do something practice next thing. Oh, that's not going to work. So let's try this. I mean, that's what we think is going to happen with Dexter Lawrence. I'll give you another guy. I'm interested to see it.

28:00And I'll go the opposite end of the spectrum because he's more of the unknown. We just know him from camp, but he's somebody who was undrafted. He was on an academic scholarship. He was paying money to try out for CFL teams. He plays on a great cup winning team. And Dante Myers comes here and from day one, he just made play after play after play. And I'll go back to, I think, the defining moment was the story that Joe related after the first preseason game. And during the off season, he's texting with Dante and he says, hey, are you in town? And Dante said, I can be. And Joe said, you want to throw tomorrow. And Dante Myers got in his car and drove from Atlanta through the night to be there the next morning to throw with Joe Burrell. And from that, like the story has grown into just one of the coolest fuel goods that you can't wait to see how it plays out. I mean, things are set up for this guy to become a total fan favorite. And you love the story because it just, that just doesn't happen. And most of the guys in the NFL are freaks from day one, right?

29:02And T Higgins is six foot five and runs of this and Dexter Lawrence is, you know, six, five, three, eighties. And has all these measurables and there are five star, but it's like, fans love it because this is like, he's not a normal guy, but he's like, he's not like just some total freak athlete that was always the best. He's had to work and people like that story. You like to think that there's an opportunity for a guy that maybe doesn't have all the measurables and all the things like that that can make and make an NFL team with his attitude and is, you know, how well he's worked. And I think what he can bring to this Bengals offense, I mean, he's going to be a fan favorite if he plays well. I'll give you another guy and I've heard you talk about him along the lines of how I'm excited to see what he does. I don't know how much he's going to play or fit into the rotation, how many snaps he gets in a game. But tell me your thoughts on somebody like Lamin Robinson? Yeah, I've always liked him since, you know, I cover the music city bowl. You know, and so I got to see Navy and got to talk with, you know, their coaches about him and talked about how crazy of an athlete he was and, you know, he was undersized and

30:02all that sort of thing. But he had always, I also got to remind me from the get go of Dan Kleco who I played with. He was a defensive tackle, a little bit undersized, but just you couldn't get your hands on him, right? And then Kleco was also a guy that gave you some snaps and pullback because he was a heck of an athlete and it kind of fit the same old as Landon Robinson. So, you know, love the story. I just, I like that, you know, kind of like Dante Myers. And most of the bangles wide receivers are tall, long guys, but you kind of need that small kind of wiggles in space guy. And you need big defensive lineman, but now Landon, rather a little bit of a curveball, right? A little bit of a change up something that's different. You can throw him in there and maybe that catches an offensive line by surprise. You know, as you say that, I think that plays to what was part of this offseason when I liked him at this organization. They thought in different ways. They kind of broke the mold in a lot of ways, whether it was drafting a guy or signing a guy who maybe it seemed like in years past they had a certain template. It maybe cashes how didn't hit the title of the offense.

31:04You got to be subscribing. Yeah. And the willingness to think outside the box and say, you know what, let's tweak it a little bit. I think that says a lot about how this organization changed in the offseason, the willingness to take a different look at this. It just gives the offense or the defense, your opponent something different. The thing that's something that's not in the same mold and like, wow, we, we may like, you know, power this week. But God of landing around. He's so quick. He gets a cross before the gargant. You know, so it's just one more thing that they have to adjust with. And that's a good thing. Now, we, we've talked about the excitement behind all this. There is the acknowledgement. It's not a perfect football team. There are some concerns. But I weigh it from this standpoint in a salary cap era. There are no perfect teams. So I almost, I look at it and say, man, if we're worried about the swing tackle or worried about the X, Y or Z, it must be nice because there's a lot of teams that are worried about their quarterback situation or don't have a Jemar chase or don't have a Dexter Lawrence.

32:05So I'm always trying to put an in perspective. This is a pretty damn good football team. It's not perfect. But the issues I don't think are like season altering because they don't have this or that. Is that fair to say? Yeah. This is not, you know, mid 2000s Alabama where you just have all these guys in the roster and they're all the biggest and all the best. It's, yeah, it's a roster has 53 guys on it. And yes, a salary cap. You can't just get all the players you want. But I mean, I don't see, I can't think of one move that you say, man, if the bingo has only done this in the off season, maybe we have no, I think they hit it about perfect. And at some point, it's going to take a guy that maybe wasn't, you know, as thought of or wasn't expecting to have a big season somewhere, maybe on the offensive line. Yes. That's going to have to just develop and just going to have to have a big year. You got to get that little stroke of a little bit of luck here. That some guy that you're not paying a ton of money steps up and has a big year. When we continue, let's talk a little bit more about the defense.

33:05The second year linebackers, a couple of things that Charlie Goldsmith said yesterday about Al Goldens defense in year two and what Dmitri's night, Jr. has set up for much more from a standpoint of success this time around compared to last year. 40:16Rocklet's talk some defense. And this year throughout the year, we're going to review the defensive play of the game. Maybe Dexter Lawrence making a lot of those. It hasn't been an issue since like week four last year. And then when Fran reminded it reminded me of it like an hour ago, I thought, well, there you go. Now it's going to be planted in my head and I'm going to blow it. I haven't blown it. I haven't blown it. I haven't blown it. Take a listen to this. I had Charlie Goldsmith on. Charlie Chalkboard yesterday. We were talking about just the issues on this defense a year ago and how they were so short in so many areas. It really limited our Goldsmiths or our Goldens opportunity to do what he wanted to do.

41:18The vision of what he had. I think some people looked and said, our gold and what the hell does he know? And I'm thinking, this is the guy who is at Notre Dame. He knows what he's doing. There's not enough pieces. But listen to how Charlie described what he thinks we could see from the defense this year. The story of the 2025 defense wasn't a lot of ways the defense kind of got duck and pigeon hold by its youth by limitations. Al couldn't really express what he wanted his system to be about because they had to simplify things just do whatever they could. But the improvements they had with the added experience that they brought to the mix. And then another year of this coaching staff together, like what I'm calling this is a reintroduction of our gold. I think we're going to learn a lot more about, you know, is this the guy who believes in not blitzing, which they didn't last year or did he just not have the pieces he needed to do stuff like that? And you know, at the end of the day, you know, they think it's going to be late December or January or who knows how long they're going to be facing one of those elite quarterbacks. The season or the post season is going to be on the line. He saw in 2021 and 2022 the impact of defensive coordinator can make in those moments.

42:21What does that have up his sleeve? We haven't seen it yet, but he has philosophy. It's one of the most interesting parts of this theme to me. Charlie Goldsmith yesterday on the show and think of all the upgrades. They upgrade in the defensive line. They upgrade in the back end and the depth on the defensive line and the options, options and pieces give you combinations to play with and toy with and different looks to give. If you're out golden, I'm moving my hands like I'm excited. He's got to be excited about what he has to work with. Well, not just that. I mean, think about being a decordator going into a game and drawing a game plan. No, and you have guys that can't tackle. No, and you have a safety. And God love you. And she wants to miss tackle. Absolutely can't. I mean, what do you do? You can draw the perfect scheme in the world. But if your scheme is set up where you're going to have a safety in the alley to make a tackle and he can't like what do you do? The very essence of a defense. That's great. So start there. That's hard. So yeah, so now with, and going back to the point about the different body types they got that are kind of outside the mold.

43:23I mean, this is obviously going to be a deadline dominated kind of situation and the things that now we're going to see. Hopefully the genius of him of now he has the toys and the pieces that he can play with and move around and put in the right positions and make plays. One more thing that Charlie said, I was interested in getting your reaction to since you were a linebacker. Dimitri's night, junior, Barrett Carter, we know the struggles they had a year ago. And Dimitri's night, junior specifically was really asked to do things. He wasn't really good at because of what they didn't have on that defensive line. Now with what they've added to that line, listen to what Charlie said about the impact it could have on Dimitri's night, junior. Take a listen. Because they had nothing else they could do, they had to put Dimitri's night on the edge. His head was already spinning by the way. He had to play out of position in a place where his game was a little bit more suited for him to be successful and the Bengals defense got exposed. Well now they don't just not need to put night on the edge. Now they've got an option. They have all these different tools. Here kind of come the specifics of the album defense.

44:24You have this brand new role that Cassius Howell is going to play. That's this completely different combination that the Bengals have. You have their turn of Schmars Turt. He pro-thalves as their best and most versatile run stopping defensive end. Something is interesting as last year, and really for his whole career, T.J. Slate and Headsland playing over the center on the nose. All of Dexter Lawrence here, they're not putting T.J. over the tackle, inside the tackle. Stuff he's never really done before. And I said, you know, T.J., how tough it's going to be to run on you guys when you've got you playing next conductor. And he kind of used a phrase, the kids use these bases like it's going to be Hella Hard. And I agree with that. It is going to be Hella Hard to run against the Bengals base defensive. And that base defense last year, which was just a mess allowed. I want to say quoting Charlie's story, over six yards per play and on the ground average gave up 5.1 yards per carry on the ground of that base defense. And Rocky, you know this. If you're a player who's not put in the best position to succeed, it becomes very difficult.

45:28This now seems like an opportunity to let Dmitrius Knight Jr. do more of what good it do it. You want to put your guys in position to do things they do well. Right. And when you're playing a guy out of position and it's not what he excels at, that's a set up. Now, instead of having to set the edge as part of that base, now we can fly around and is a linebacker. Give a linebacker a chance to fly around and tackle people. No doubt. Yeah. That defensive line you mentioned, we've spoken before about the importance of if you've got depth and options. The difference between playing maybe eight more snaps per game versus eight fewer. And the ability to stay fresh later in the games and rotate guys in like hockey lines coming over the boards. That's huge light in the game, isn't it? It's so big, but I mean, just to go back to like the different looks they can give. I just did Georgia last week and Glenn Schumann is their decordinator. And it's very similar to what offenses do now. I can't hardly think of a time where an offense just comes in the line and snaps the ball.

46:30There's a motion, there's a shift, there's a trade, there's a this and that. So you're playing games with the defense, giving them a different picture and making them react and move. Now you're going to be able to do that on defense and show up with a three down look and then go to a four down look. And then so now the offense is going to wait a minute. So, you know, okay, who do I block here now? That kind of thing. That's going to be goal. He is rocky. I'm Lance. That will be until 4 a.m. UC playing at 7 p.m. Cincinnati police and UC public safety have been working to combat crime after shooting to past few weeks near campus. The 8 p.m. closure did get pushed back from business owners in the Clifton area to injured in a shooting Wednesday night in Colerain Township as police responded before 10 o'clock to Mullen Road near Harrison. They found a woman in juvenile female suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The juvenile was in serious condition at the hospital. The woman listed a stable so far no suspect information has been provided. Sorry, 39. But, yeah, the fake punt. We saw him work on it in practice Tuesday. I didn't think they would. I mean, that we've seen that play be worked on before.

58:52And they've never ran it. So, you know, it was a little bit of a surprise to see it, but it worked out great. Max Fletcher's a lot better. Max and Mason Fletcher, remember, third dad and grandpa are like all of fame Australian rules football guys. Like, their dad is the Kobe Bryant of Australian rules football is what they call him. Those guys are athletes. Like, they can make play. So, it was really cool to see Max get that. And then, here from there, they bought some college, let's be honest, it's not very good. And since now he did what they should have done to it, then it's not very good. All right, Chad. Talk to me about the quarterback, JC French. I'd covered him a few times at Georgia's Southern. Look, it has a lot of experience. He'd had trouble in the past, turned the ball over, but only one week. What's the verdict on JC French? I think you hit on an important key there, Rocky.

59:54Don't turn the ball over. The only way they were going to lose to Boston College is that they made a bunch of mistakes, and they gave Boston College extra opportunities. And I think that was probably part of the game plan. Just play Keep Away. Make sure they don't get the ball at Cincinnati's 20 yard line and get gifted a touchdown. Because they weren't going to move the ball consistently enough to score with Cincinnati. So, I think that was part of it too, if they were just controlling the game on the ground. And you didn't really need to go to JC French and his arm all that often. Now, is it going to have to improve? Is it going to have to get better going forward? Yes, they're going to need a serviceable passing attack if they're going to win some games in the big 12. But in that particular game, I just didn't really see an overwhelming need for Cincinnati to throw the ball

1:00:56to end up with more points in Boston College. And in fact, I think that was probably the only way they could have lost as if they threw it around and it didn't go well. The other side of the ball, what did you make of the highly anticipated debut of Nate Woody's defense? It was as advertised. They were aggressive. They flew around the ball. It was really nice watching more than three guys attempt to beat the five offensive linemen. They played three on five all year last year. That did not work. They blitzed blind backers. They blitzed safety. They're using Antoine Peak all over the field to get up the field and get pressure. That's going to create turnovers. That's going to create some havoc. Fourth acts, two turnovers. I don't think you could have asked for a better debut for the East Coast three, four defense in Nate Woody. And we found out that Nate Woody just walks around the facility with the broad acts, which

1:01:57Yeah, go deep. Go deep. Picture of all this. So that is something I guess he started at Army. They liked it so much at Army. They had a replica of broad acts that they still use for Army and defense. Apparently we found out after the game like he occasionally just walks around the building with that thing. It's the reward for getting a turnover. You get to have the broad acts. So I was surprised when I saw that thing come out and even more. But knowing Nate Woody, I guess it's not a great surprise that that's a man. The walks around with the broad acts at the ready. So who was the team? It was in the NFL. I think it was when I was when I was playing. I want to say the jaguars that had like a slogan like keep chopping wood, right? And they had like a like a stump and like an axe in the locker room and like the kicker. Kicker, stuffy. Kicker.

1:02:58Yeah. Swole and it's landstaff and like cut his leg or something. So that doesn't happen, right? In that start with Gianno. Well, that was a Rutgers thing because one of my greatest memories of UC football is Ben Mach running down Rutgers sideline chopping wood with his hand after a touchdown throw. And Gianno did not take kindly to that at all. So, Trevor, for folks that maybe don't know or still a little bit on the peripheral with this UC team, what would you say? And again, just one week, but what's the biggest strength of this team? What's maybe the biggest weakness you see? The biggest strength is clearly offensive line. The they are a team that's going to run at you. They've got a stable. They've got four starting quality running backs. An NFL guard, probably an NFL tackle in Joe Cotton. Evan Kangastole is obviously a first team all-American. And then another guy at center in Taren Tio who's got NFL aspirations.

1:04:02So that's the strength. Like without question. They're going to lean on that as much as humanly possible throughout this season. Weakness, it's still probably going to be the passing game until we see otherwise. Like, I think JC French is fine. I think his role in this situation, I think as game manager, I think people take that as a negative connotation. I don't necessarily take it as a negative connotation. Run the ball, throw it when you need to, convert on third down, give your defense a chance. If the defense is good and the run game is good, you can win quite a few games with a game manager. So I think the passing game, especially taking the top off the defense, I think is probably the biggest weakness. You've seen JC French. I think he's fine in the short and intermediate game. He's just not really a guy that, you know, and they don't have a receiving core. I don't think that's really going to blow you away down the field.

1:05:05So know who you are, which is what they did on Saturday. Know who you are. Lay to your strengths and try to win games that way. All right, I was looking through the game notes and the look I had to Western Carolina and a thought struck me and I'm going to ask you this in the form of a trivia question. The last time they played Western Carolina was 2005. The UC Bearcats won 7-3. Can you name for me who scored the lone touchdown for the Bearcats in that 7-3 win? I'll give you a clue. He's a local product. Bradley Gladhart. Yes. Wow. Look at you. Okay, one more. One that just made the most sense. Okay, one more that smart guy. Name for me this one time UC Bearcats basketballer who had one catch for 28 yards in that game. Boy, think mixed early years in need of help.

1:06:11Conor Barwin. Yes, yes, Conor Barwin. Conor would have been a tight end at that point in time. 28 yards on the catch. Oh, Derry and Brent Selleck had a couple of catches in that game as well. Wow, you're impressive. You know something about this UC football program. Lance, this is year 20. Every once in a while, somebody will be like, how do you know all these? How do you like, how do you have the, I'm like, look, I've been doing this for 20 freaking years if I didn't know everybody. Fire me. Great job. Get rid of me immediately. Now you're now you're pushing me even maybe into like try to stump Chad's second of the show every week. Boy, that's not I'm not as special to public school in Northern Kentucky. I'm not as smart as I look. All right, you're going to you're all over it. You're always all over it and you're going to be this weekend. Tell everybody what you have going on with Bearcats Journal.

You got a giant bar in the back on a sweet looking patio. And we are excited. The first of our three week run here, we hit the wilder and Richland Wood locations throughout the season as well. It's all presented by Cincinnati Tax Resolution, Power by Topesheldon, Lance McAllister and Rocky Boyman. We'll get into the high school football scene with Greg Schumacher coming up from high school football tonight at 736. Dan Klaskins has your fantasy football fix at 750. Tonight, Rock Eye was struck by something. Charlie Goldsmith said yesterday when he joined me on sports stuff. And I think one of the unknowns. It's a guy everybody roots for and they hope he stays healthy. Eric Hall missed all of the last season. Has Blight since 2024. And I believe he only had six snaps during the preseason. But there is such a sense of excitement for what he could lend to this offense.

1:10:18Listen to the words, Charlie Goldsmith used to describe all's potential impact on this offense. You can make the case he's one of the 5, 6, 7 most important people on this offense. They've said all along, they can redo a lot of what they do because of Eric's presence. It's almost like Eric Hall spaces out this offense with his blocking, with his motions, with his physicality. Like he creates space and he gives chase brown and everybody else. There's more room, oh, and he can also stretch the field vertically, with his routes, which impress the coaching staff, the pass catcher. So, you know, when you look at the under center, stuff a lot of that could have a better chance to work because of all. And he's probably the guy on the whole team outside of Death to Lawrence, I'm most interested to watch. That's a pretty big statement about Eric Hall. And there is a, there's clearly an element of a leap of faith here that he's going to be healthy. But man, he's the tight end who can do, they've got a couple of different tight ends who do one thing well. He's the guy who can block, he can catch, he can do it all. And he gives them an opportunity to tie it in whatever he can impact this off.

1:11:22We've been talking earlier in the show about the defense and how there's different body types and different skillsets and, you know, cash is how and, you know, kind of what he can do. Boy, I'm off in some of those guys, and Alan and all those guys. It's the same thing for Eric Hall. Yeah, Micah Siggie is going to be the long tall, you know, lengthy tight end. But yeah, now Eric Hall is a guy that can be one that he can block. You know, by all accounts, you know, had a heck of a camp. And yeah, just be that piece that has some different skill sets that they can utilize. And, you know, the defense can't just hone in on one thing the tight ends are going to do. He can do multiple. I want to stay on the offensive side of things. And Joe Burrow did an interview with Albert Breer of SI last week. A couple of things he said struck me about how comfortable he feels and healthy now and what that will lend itself to from an ability to run and create again. But there's also the element he said where in thinking about

1:12:26staying healthy, he's learned some things about that that includes understanding that every play that some plays you have to give up on that instead of trying to extend it a little bit longer. Maybe you're opening yourself up to a hit. Sometimes you just have it's the classic live to play another down. And maybe it's just throwing the ball into the ground and moving on to the next one. And it made me think of somebody like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady who are really good at realizing I just need to cut my losses here. I don't need to extend this and try to create something and turn it over. It's not happening on this play. I'll try to make it happen on the next play. And I think that's part of the maturity of Joe and realizing his value of when he's healthy on this team and not taking risk all the time. So I feel totally vindicated here because I feel like for a couple years every time Burrow would get hit or take a second. All the offense of line sucks. I'm like you realize these are the best in the world. And you're not going to be able to block these guys 70, 80. It's not going to look perfect.

1:13:27And having played with Peyton Manning, having played in the era of Tom Brady and knowing that those guys were statues. And I remember saying for years like those guys weren't even half the athlete. Joe Burrow is and they didn't get sacked. They didn't get hit the way that Burrow is. And I felt like, and I was saying this for a while, but I felt like it was Joe Flacco coming in and showing everybody within this Bengals offense right in front of their eyes. Again, the same guy who's also a statue kind of quarterback. Yeah, you know, someone happened to, okay, we cut a guy loose, boom, that ball gets thrown right into the ground because he realized, and I was always screaming for Joe Burrow to realize, your health is the most important thing. It's more important than any first down. It's maybe more important than any game. Yes. Of you staying healthy. Yes. You are out there and we appreciate how he never gives up on a play. It's an admirable quality. But the great ones know that fine line of when I got to hang in there and I got to make a plan, I got to take a shot and I got to take a sack versus you know what, it ain't worth it.

1:14:28And it's a hard thing to get to, but I feel like Joe Flacco coming. Yes. I think show Joe Burrow that and I hope that sticks. I hope I will stand up and applaud in this game on Sunday against the box. If something happens, they bring a blitz and it just ain't there. And he just sells a ball 27 yards out of bounds and we live to fight another day. I also think there's something to be said for. As you mentioned, Joe Flacco, perfect tie in. And Joe kind of alluded to it earlier this week. This under center, how much they're going to do it? Not sure. They certainly tried it during training camp to limited mixed bag success. But Joe referenced the fact that that Joe Flacco has been under center a lot. Josh Johnson, the third stringer under center a lot. And picking their brains about that. And I'll be interested because Joe likes to process from the shotgun. And it's different. He's talked about. He has said, you know, the idea of turning his back on the defense is is a little uncomfortable. It's something he has to get used to. I'll be real interested to see how it's incorporated.

1:15:31When it's incorporated and the patience they have with it. Because it's clearly a work in progress. I don't want them to bail the first time it doesn't work. But I don't think they necessarily have to. I think it'll be like match up base. Like maybe there'll be games they use it more than the other. I just want to I'm curious to see how it's going to look. Well, you said it's going to be up to Joe Burrow. How much does he embrace it? And if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. It doesn't work. How long is he going to stay with it? Because let's face it, people like to do what they're good at. And he's damn good at it. When he can sit back there and spread the field and form five wide and see the rotations of the defense because let's face it. They do that now more than ever. The defense is not giving you a static picture anymore. So is he going to be comfortable? Like you said, turn this back to the defense. I mean, I've been saying it for weeks if not months. There is no play action unless it's under center. Unless the quarterback's under center. I've lived it. Like a little zone read vague does nothing. But when you're, you know, Peyton Manning was always the best. Had you under center and he turns back and he would hold,

1:16:31stick that ball out. And even at the NFL level, there's something that attracts you. You want to go get the ball, right? You want to go get this so you come up and then boom. Flip that thing out. And it's just a matter of, you know, and they're going to have to have some success with it. And hopefully that happens. And then he'll maybe choose to embrace it. But at the end of the day, you know, he's got to do what works for him. And sometimes some guys, you know, are good at everything, right? You know, so you get in and Rocky. It's a stark difference. The numbers will show. And I'm in the ballpark on these numbers from the shotgun efficiency wise. He's like the third best in the league. Under center, those numbers are somewhere down around 25th or 26th best of the league. So you can understand Joe looking and saying, but I'm really good at this. But you wonder if there's a little bit more attention paid to it. A little bit more if that 25 doesn't bump up after more use. That'd be the perfect. They don't have to do it 15, 20 times a game. They got to do it maybe five times a game or something. Just something. Another little look and, you know, because again, I mean, I can also slow down a rush.

1:17:33You know what I mean? Because guys are now coming up. They feel like they got a rack to the run. So I think it's got to play out. I hope they at least embrace it for a little while. How are you? I am wonderful, guys. It's great to be back for your number five with you guys on this show. And boy, we are three weeks deep into the season. And it's actually, you'll be four weeks deep now. So, uh, five Wednesdays all sitting down for sure.

1:24:44We are ready to get it going. Let's jump into it. Let's start with Elder Hosting Lasal. Elders rolled through three top 15 opponents, I think in the Blitz five top 25. And the Lancers now looking at a bounce back this week. Yeah, how about that? I mean, Elder's beaten three teams in the top 15 of the Blitz top 25. Pulled by 32 points or more. All three of them. And guys, in the second half of games, they have outspoken their opponent 63 to seven. They are putting teams away with a passion. Not only that, coming into this season, the teams on molar schedule were combined, I think, 75 winning percentage. Coming into the season. And they are just taking care of it like it's nothing. I mean, Panthers quarterback, Kay Nees Step. He's a Miami Red Hawks commit. He is thrown and ran for more than 100 yards in each of the three games. He's completing 76.2% of his passes for 689 yards and seven touchdowns.

1:25:47And then his top target, Andrew Lyman, he's tied six of those touchdown passes for, and has 18 receptions for 305 yards. Lyman is a transfer from Kings and a ball state commit. The two of them are neighbors and he decides he wanted to come and hang out with his buddy, you step for a year over at Elder. Boy, it's paying off big time for those guys right now for sure. And like you said, Lance Lance, looking for a bounce back win. They suffered a 27 to 24 loss last week at Bearmont. They were leading that game with nine minutes left and bound away not to finish it off. It's a young, old, sad team. But their average in 4.7 yards per carry, that's their thing. They run the football behind their centerpiece, is their quarterback, you're frayly. He has a team high 38 carries, but they, Lance has five other guys who carried the ball between five and nine times. So they spread the wealth out. They're going to need to run the football in this ballgame. But in the end of this one,

1:26:48I just think Elder's too tough. And at home, I wouldn't be surprised if they have another 32 point win or more over the number 13. I remember 12 of the South. Lance is in this one. They're just so tough. And they bring the linebackers that you in droves. And I think that's going to wear them the South down here in the second half of this affair. Elder one of the best teams in the state hands down. Moving on here, Greg Anderson, that Lebanon and Anderson had a tough loss that opening week. But man, they can still put up a ton of points. They got a lot of playmakers. And again, it gave up 59 to Trinity. But there still have a 14 point margin of victory here. What are you seeing in this one? Yeah, Robbie, this team scored 121 points after having a 59 put up a week was. So they have showed no prisoners in the first two games in ECC play. One thing I do love about Lebanon is their average for 15 yard profits per game.

1:27:48And 287 of that is pulling the ground. They're going to need to keep that ball in the ground. Keep that Anderson offense off of the field. Being your Logan Schmink for the Warriors is averaging 214 yards of game rushing. We've got nine rushing touchdowns. Here's a crazy thing about Lebanon. They've got 31 tackles for losses on their defense. But yet last week to West Claremont, they gave up 319 yards passing. That's one of those things right there where Anderson's got that they throw the ball so well. If Lebanon does not keep them off the field, they are going to march it up and down. And Anderson's going to march it up and down and feel it against them. So Lebanon, again, you've got a lean on Logan Schmink and that running game to keep them in this ball game. And it is that Lebanon. It will be a good crowd. So we'll see if they can knock off number 6 Anderson. All right, with row is that Harrison. Harrison's got a quarterback who's certainly slinging it so far early on. And with row seems like up and down the roster,

1:28:48they've got guys contributing with touchdowns. Yeah, so the layoffs out in the preseason. I went out and saw quite a few teams. And one of the teams that I was very impressed with was with Harrison. They had three losses, regular season losses last year. And ended up seven and three in the regular season. They lost by 1.2.4 points. And you could tell this team when they came out this season that they were ready. They knew that they were that close and they had a mission on them. The other team like that was Dakota West. We'll talk about that next week. But West was another team like that. I saw in the preseason that they just had their own a mission. And Harrison won their first two games. That's going to opponents 63 to nothing. This is a bigger more athletic team than with row is than anything Harrison faced. Now Beaver Creek was good last week. Harrison won a close game after winning those first two games by shut out. But I do think this is going to be one of those teams where one of those games where with us that's let us this could do some damage here.

1:29:51But again, Harrison is just so home in on what they're doing. Brady, Lehan, the quarterback like you said, Lance 73.8% of his passes have been completed for 824 yards through three games. But they touch down to no one in their section. So he's doing it through the air. The thing I love about with row is they've had 11 different players already find the end zone three three games. But last week the Tigers against Springboro gave up eight tackles for losses that offensive line did. And if Harrison could find that kind of pressure and contain the outside against Harrison, they are going to are outside against with row. They're going to have a great opportunity when this game is the part of the Harrison Wildtask. All right, Greg. It's the battle of the hill. Wyoming and Indian Hill and some great quarterback play in this one. Wyoming quarterback David DeBree, 11 touchdowns already. And of course, Indian Hill, QB Devlin Daniel. He's the Mississippi State baseball commit athletic dual threat quarterback. How you seeing this one?

1:30:53This team, Rocky, I really like Wyoming. Other after the bench last season's lost in the battle at hill. It was just the Cowboys second loss in the last 97 regular season games. They're very a complete team here. Their quarterback David Dupy is completing 76% of his passes. He's got a 772 yards and 11 touchdowns with zero interceptions this season. He's had four consecutive games with at least three passing touchdowns. And it's a marquee. It's hit seven times in his last in starts. They throw the ball around really well. Indian Hill, the reigning division four region 16 champions. Their first ever regional championship last year. Devlin Daniel's been a great player for them. We got a junior running back that's run the ball very well for them. So it's taken some pressure off of Daniel in the backfield. But the fact is it's going to come down to defense in this one. And does the Indian Hill defense have enough to maintain and control and contain the Wyoming Cowboys and to them in the crowd?

1:31:55I think this is one of those games where too many weapons at Wyoming. And it's an event that last year's lost game two Indian Hill. I like the Cowboys in this one for sure. All right, Greg. Give us final notes or things to watch for tomorrow night. Really cool stuff here, Lance. There are four teams looking to go 4-0. And they all have to do it on the road again. Teams that are sitting at two and one already on this season. So four 3-0 teams right now that haven't gone 4-0 in a long time. So they're dating. They're at mud loads. 3-0. The last time they start 4-0 was 2020. Northwest is 3-0. They're at a Perk Carolyn Dayton. Last time Northwest started 4-0 was in 2015. Jews is 3-0 and apparently they're very good looking. Small schools team. I haven't seen much of them. They're at Pristelle Marion. The last start for Jews at 4-0 was 2021. And Franklin County that East Central, after East Central lost to Elderlast, we've 42 to 7.

1:32:55Franklin County is looking to go 4-0 for the first time since 1999. Usually in week 4 they get East Central and can't get past that rivalry game. But yeah, some fun stuff there for some teams that haven't gone 4-0 in a long time. I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow night with those schools. So big night across the board. Lay out a preview of the show. Yeah, so high school football tomorrow night. I'll box forth 1350 and ESPN 1530. It starts at 6 o'clock. We will have, I actually will co-host the pregame portion of the show. I've got interviews with Jesse Herp. The Dayton Head Coach, we just talked about their 3-0, Luke Cribe, Redding's Head Coach. He's got his son as the sophomore starting quarterback. They got a sophomore starting running back. They're looking to do some good stuff. So we'll have him to preview in their game against Dear Park, who's 3-0. So they got a chance to make some headways there over at Redding tomorrow night. And then by cloud, the head coach over at Roger Bacon will also join us. Cool, cool interview with him. He actually, they have turf that got flooded out at Roger Bacon High School during the season.

1:34:00So they haven't played a home game yet. They play Nick Tomar and Knight. They play Nick at Wyoming as the home game for the Bacon Spartans. The Spartans also have a freshman running back and a freshman quarterback. So he talked about the trials and tribulations of that, having to go through that. And also how surreal it is for Roger Bacon to now as two NFL players in Cory, Kyron James, Thompson, playing in the NFL this week in one playing in Australia. Obviously, Cory played last night for New England in that game. It was really great, great interview with Mike Blauch. Guys don't want to miss that. That'll be on between 6 and 6.45. He's been hobbit a little bit during camp, expected him to be a big part of the game plan tonight. Also, obviously we've got George Kittle coming off his Achilles injury. What's that kind of look like? I'm not expecting Kittle to have a large role in this game. Maybe he does. Maybe it doesn't. I'll enter with caution and fantasy. I've been seeing a few leagues right having, but also the Rams back here. What's he going to look like? Blake Horm is going to get a larger workload this year in his second D numbers, Kyrie Williams. And we're all looking forward to seeing that cycling LAD defense. I know Aaron Donald's not playing yet, but Watson Marshall Garrett in that Ram View is going to be something we should all be doing then too. All right, Dan. It's week one yet. There are still injuries and do some big name guys here. Let's go through them here. Yeah, rock. Definitely. The injuries already happened. We saw last night with Sam Darnel with the hip issue. He's weak to weak and AJ Brown looks like he's going to miss at least four weeks with

A couple of few weeks with coming up and me procedure there. Better news for Vaders running back at Gen. T. His status has been cleared up for week one. He's going to go. He's going to be in stuff. Walk him in. Also encouraging news on Jeremiah. Love the first time. Rocky Carr. Zona. But his ankle issue. He's also be a full go with the growing for the jet that running back in two hundred. The Andre Swift all looking like their in action for week one. A receiver of the league neighbors. A name we're watching. He's coming up as only injury. He's going to be ready for week one. Could be limited. I mean, you can both. I'm going to have full go versus the bangles off his turk to watch him room. A dozen. If he didn't have for the pair. She's day to day here with this leg issue and a couple of good news on some tight end. Tyler Warren with his groin and standle quarter. The chip have both been cleared for week one. Lock them into your line up. All right. Let's do those weekly studs.

1:39:08Duds and sleepers. Yeah. Yeah, let's start with our studs. Lance will start a quarterback with Justin Herbert. The matchup couldn't be juicier with obviously the Arizona Cardinals on tap. They were one of the worst teams on defense last year and might think Daniel the new offensive play color. The former dolphins head coach a lot of excitement in this charge is all fence. I think Herbert gets to start with the top five. The NSE performance that run a quarterback and a running back to on HM and that my top five. He could easily did a top scoring running back this week. The dolphins don't have a lot to go on. HM is the whole offense. They're at lost bag. It's whether they're losing or winning. He's going to be part of the game plan. I like him quite a bit from the guy that I like the ones I don't go next. He tops my double this to quarterback. I don't really like him or Patrick Mahomes. The Spanish. He starters in week one is the team throws the Broncos on my day. And I think it's a low scoring game and I'm going to also be very cautious with CJ Moore. I love his arrival to Buffalo. Get a judge on that target.

1:40:09But this first week one trip as Houston leaves me less optimistic. He's going to get off to a bang and then a couple of sleepers for a fellow. And it's game well. I like the bus running back, especially if the bangles have a lead. He'll get them out of the PPR action and catch up time for the bucks on Sunday and also like me Josh down. He did my top 30 receiver and a great matchup with Baltimore. I think without fear of being able to bang up, he's going to be heavily involved here for the coach. 1:42:16Make the playoffs the next year and you talk about hope and opportunity for fan bases in every NFL city and we look at baseball which is headed towards an Armageddon showdown of a lockout because the the lack of parody in the league and big money versus small money and the NFL for 36 consecutive years to have at least four teams every year. Fall from outside the playoffs in is just an incredible number. It's the ultimate reality TV show. I mean, that's what people love to watch and it you're right. It has it over every other sport because there is true parody and teams, you know, like the Jaguars will go five years being terrible. Then all of a sudden make the playoffs. It's a wonderful thing. Let's get into Zack Taylor in this hour because I think this isn't breaking news when when you have a team that has missed the playoffs three straight years, like the Bengals. With somebody as talented as Joe Burrell. And then you've gone out and done what you've done as an organization and checked all the boxes and been very aggressive and changed the way you operated. There is an increased enhanced sense of the importance of this season. And I don't think it's breaking news to say. Zack Taylor and the Bengals best make the playoffs this year or dot, dot, dot, because I think you'd be hard pressed to make a case that in his eighth year,

1:52:39he could miss the playoffs coaching a team for the fourth straight year in the Joe Burrell window and expect to get another opportunity next year. And I think anybody who's ever the thing is there are some coaches, you know, you could realistically, you could care less if they get fire because they're in a pain in the rear. Zack's like nobody says that nobody ever says a bad thing about Zack. I mean, he's like the nicest guy in the world. And yet in Paul Dana, Jr. wrote a fantastic piece for the athletic this week. And his line was specifically where was the line? He says there's a reason nice guys finished first, never quite caught on as a saying. And the reality is he's got to win this year. And I think that's a fair and reasonable expectation. Or he's probably not going to get another crack at it, you would think. Agreed. And I mean, for the past how many years, I've defended Zack Taylor because I, you know, I've simply looked at the pieces he was given, the greetings, the ingredients he was given. And said, look, this is not his fault. It's the assembly of the roster. I think he's doing the best with what he has and dealing with injuries and

1:53:40Joe Burrow and all that. But now he's got the groceries, right? He's got the guys that can play the front office has assembled the team for him. So now there was no excuses. I mean, it absolutely does fallen him to take this roster, which we all think is easily the best roster Joe Burrow has ever had and really produced this year. I had asked on Twitter, ex at Lance McAllister a couple of weeks ago, I said, who do you think faces more pressure this season among this group of four? Zack Taylor, Joe Burrow, Duke Tobin or Al Golden and about 70% said Zack and about 13% said Joe. And I think 70% is a fair, probably a little bit even lower than I thought, because I just think it screams and look, we know, we know what Zack is about and what he's good at. This is his eighth year. His messaging, his steadiness, he's the calm and the storm and you know how important there's a consistency to Zack and there's a positive to Zack and is a former

1:54:42player. I see you nodding your head. There is something to the consistent, positive messaging and being steady and not the roller coaster all over the place. Yeah. I mean, the good coaches I've played for have always been consistent. You know, Tony Dungee, if we're win, we're not that great. If we're lose, we're not that bad. It was just every day is the same, same message and I think Zack Taylor is like that. And I would say the bad coaches I played for the ones that were super emotional and you didn't know what you were getting. It's a long season. He spent a lot of time together to be, you know, every day like what, what, what, what coach are we getting today? Yeah. And I don't think the Bengals have to deal with that. I'm reminded of something that Zack said earlier in, in camp. It may have been even during the offseason or maybe during one of the OTA's or mini camps. One of those gatherings in Jeremy Rao asking the question, Fox 19, asking the question about getting this team back to the postseason and chasing greatness. And I thought it was a great answer. Here is the question from Jeremy and the answer from Zack Tegel.

1:55:43Zack, you have to be so focused on the daily grind and focused on everything you have to do. But how much do you just feel yourself thinking, I want to get this team back to greatness again? Like how hot does that go through your mind? Or constantly? I mean, you really have no idea. It's constant. It's the second week of the morning. I turn the shower on. All I think about when I'm in the shower is what this team, what we want for this team next year. And I have to keep notes on my phone of things. I want to tweak it at the schedule. So it's a constant, I'm not spending time with my family. I think I do a good job separating that, you know, when I'm with them. But I think if you were in my brain, it's just a constant process. Thought that's going on on things that we got to do, things we got to tweak, where we need to be. So yeah, that's our expectation is to be great and play for games that are really meaningful at the end of the year. We haven't done that recently. And we know what it looks like and feels like. That's the good news. And I think we got a lot of guys that understand that as well. And the coaching staff that understands it. And we're going to do everything we can to get there. Jeremy Rao, Fox 19 with a question to Zach earlier in the season.

1:56:44There was a quote from Duke that Paul wrote about, included in his story this week from the athletic pole to enter junior. And Duke just before camp started was asked about Zach. And Duke Tobin said, I believe in Zach. I believe in what he does. I believe in how he manages people and the staff he's put together. I believe he is very quick-minded. I think he has a great vision for players and willing, is willing to change the vision based on what he has. He has taken us to the Super Bowl. He's very organized. And then Duke kind of paused and said to Paul, is that enough? And he, because he laid out, and there's no doubt they support Zach. And I think in mentioning Duke, let's acknowledge there's been a shift on Duke because this offseason began with a lot of heat on Duke. And everybody was complaining, man, they've got to, if they're not adding to the scouting department, they've got to be more aggressive. You got to do things. You got to do this. You got to do this. And it's unacceptable three straight years. And what did Duke and the organization do? We've laid it out. They went out and did all the things that, if we had put together a wish list,

1:57:48they went out as an organization and checked all of those boxes delivered. Yeah, over delivered, which shifts that blame scenario off of them onto. And now it's just the way it is when an organization does all of that. And they've got a quarterback like Joe, then the all eyes go to the coach, all right, what are you going to do with it? And that's just how life is. Well, it's the classic too much is given, much is expected. Yes. If this was a middling kind of roster, which you could argue at some degree, it was last couple years. Okay, maybe you don't expect as much or you shouldn't expect as much from Zack Taylor. But now the roster is here. I did like what Duke Tobin said about being quick-minded. I think that's a good quality to have where you can recognize things and what needs to be assessed, what needs to be changed and do that very, very quickly. That's a great quality. You know, that made me think of something about the under center offense. So I want to pivot off of it, but it points to Zack and his coaching. We have been frustrated. I've been frustrated at times. How many times have we talked about the narrative of play calling and giving up the play calling?

1:58:51And clearly that's not going to happen. But I think there is, it's going to be interesting to watch. One of the issues has been getting plays in on time that's frustrating. There seems to be a delay and sometimes they have to call a time out the plays not in. If they are going to go under center more, you best be giving Joe all the time. Get that play in. It's one thing when Joe can stand back and process. He's going to be under center, which already he's not as comfortable with. And the play has come in late and he's rushing to the line of scrimmage. That's not going to work. That part of the process, the streamlining is going to have to improve from this. Right. It's already foreign to him. Yes. He doesn't love it. And if you want him to love it, you better make it happen to where he can have some success with it. So I mean, he's, you know, with the hell of communication, these coaches are constantly, they can't help themselves. You know, hey, check this and watch this and a number 29 score. And all the way up to that last second here. And that's what keeps the call from me. I have lived that.

1:59:54You know, and getting the calls in and you're like, just come on, give me a call. Give me a call. Give me a call. And but they're waiting because they want to see what the offense is doing. And the offense is trying to see what the defense is doing. And it happens very, very quickly. By the way, one final story from Paul Dana Jr.'s piece that I laughed. And it's, you think of it and what it does to a family and the pressure on coaching and whether you're going to lose your job or not. And I think that's lost on fans at times. But this story, Zach was driving his son Brooks to school this spring. And his son asked him, do you like Stephen A Smith? And Zach said to him, well, he talks about a lot of topics and he's knowledgeable on it. You're not always going to hit a home run every time with your topic. I respect the work he does. And his son looked at his dad and he says, well, he says you should be fired. Zach said, well, I don't agree with that one. But you could just see that conversation to the car between other and son of a,

2:00:54he thinks you should be fired. Well, he is so calm and unbothered that it almost seems fake. But but you know, he's been, he's been around here long enough to work. Yes. I know that it's not an act. Like he's, as you say that, there's never been a moment where he seems to have been unnerved or unravel and oppressed conference. There's always a, even when there's been maybe the question that digs a little bit deeper than the normal or after a personal. Yes. Yeah. There's a way he, it's almost a pause or a quick like take a breath and then answer the question and he's very good. The messaging, he's just very good. We see it publicly at the podium and you understand how that messaging works with his guys. They're just a way of saying it with a directness and a calmness and a reason behind what he said. Well, and because that's sometimes he's not the best sound bite in the world, right? Because he's, he's not going to get unnerved.

Today, next up, the first up, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday at the Pakehor Stadium. Last night on Bengal's game plan, heard down the dial on ESPN 1530 with Dan Horton, Wayne Box Miller.

2:03:59They talk with Jenna Lane who covers the Buccaneers for ESPN. Two of their big names, Vita Bay and Baker, Macy, went through very public contract dispute, so to speak. One included a trade demand. She talked about the impact of deals getting done for both guys and said this is what it does for the team. Take a listen. It's so rare for this organization to have players that make their grievance of public until you have two guys that are doing that. You really wonder if Team morale going downhill. I think they did a good job and I give a lot of credit to Baker for showing the leadership when they got together for Tampa. He assembled everybody and he just said, Hey, guys, look, my contract situation is what it is, but I'm all about ball right now. And I promise you, I'm going to give it everything I have. And every player that I talk to about that just said they knew all those things, Baker even said he did a lot of that more. So for some of the guys, Macy didn't know him because they did bring in a lot of new pieces, which is that that really reaffirmed their belief in him. You know, that they knew that he was going to give it is all.

2:05:00And I think it goes a long way as far as morale when you can take care of your guys and it may not go the way you want to from the jump. I mean, I thought with Mike Evans, he had a contract view, which is really kind of the first one of those I can recall in recent memory. They were ultimately able to get a deal done with Evans after that. And of course, he did go on to the 49ers, but, but after that dispute in 2023, they were able to come together on a two year deal after that. So I think they see that maybe these things don't always work out from the jump, but if you can just be patient and you stay committed to the team and most of all, like to each other, good things can happen. So I know they're all really thrilled for Baker today. They're really supportive of them. And I think, I think this is going to go a long way for team morale. Gelaane covers the box for ESPN two things there, Rock. When when two of your best arguably your two best guys, when they're in contract disputes or unhappy, the last thing you want is for that to carry over into the season. They take care of that. It's out of the way. And the messaging of to everybody else, hey, they got it done.

2:06:02They took care of our best guys because nobody wants to wonder or think they don't value the guys who can ultimately lead you to where you want to go. That's a big thing to get out of the way. Isn't it? First of all, how nice was it not to have to deal with it? Oh, no, no, no tree Hendrickson standing outside of practice in his golf outfit, holding his own news. Kind of with not one of his teammates supporting him anyway. What was the question? Just how big it is to get it taken care of in the message. It sends when you actually lock up the guys who are most important to the franchise. That means that that means everything because yeah, you know, hey, look, the message is there for everyone to see. If you perform, we want you here. And did you watch the new season of quarterback? I'm, I'm halfway through it. OK. Yes. If you're not a fan of bigger, maybe I think you become a great become one. Yes. I always kind of have been just like how he how he plays, but it was even cooler during the show. My wife and my son. Yeah. Well, one of the he's one of those classic guys on your team. He is also the other team.

2:07:03He just wants to punch him in the face. Very well said. Yeah, he's on the opposing team. Yeah, hey, yeah. OK, I thought on this roster and tell me if this makes sense. And the Bengals announced the roster when I was on vacation. And when I got back, I took a look at their final cuts and the kind of the back end of the roster and this struck me. And Zach has always said that he loves guys. They love guys that love ball and and guys with maybe a chip on their shoulder who were overlooked or underrated. And I look towards the back end of that roster. And I see some like Dante Myers who we talked about. I see Jack Andrews, the tight end who was drafted in the seventh round who said, I'm going to make all those blanking teams pay that passed on me. A swaisy bozeman is an undrafted linebacker who played it. Copia Lincoln Community College. And he's on his fourth team, but made his way onto this roster. Landon Robinson, we talked about him being undraft or the seventh round pick who didn't even get an invite to the combine. They've got an offensive lineman named Jacob buyer, a bear who was undrafted.

2:08:07Kind of a fighter and a scrapper. He's got a bullet. I love that. You got guys like that. And Zach said after the third preseason game, when a bunch of the other guys backups played, he said, you fit exactly what we want a bangle to be. Rock to me. I've never put together a roster. And I don't know how much any of these guys are going to impact the season. Maybe they don't impact it at all. Maybe they impacted a lot. But I think there's something to be said for. And as I was thinking about this, I thought of Germaine Burton and just how how many doubts they had about Germaine Burton and wondered if he was going to be at practice, if he was going to show up for a game. And I compare and contrast to the back end of that roster now that guys, ultimately you have to perform to stay in the league. But I like guys that are overlooked and underrated and scrappy and have come out of nowhere and are taking advantage of an opportunity. Is there something to everybody would like to have the best roster of all? And maybe on this back end, they're a little bit short on talent, but they think there's something there.

2:09:09I think there's something to be said for that. Yeah, it's almost like that can be the glue and the difference of having a great roster versus having a great team, right? Because you can have a good way to put it. I mean, how many, you know, it was the the Eagles and what year was that? Yeah, the dream team, right? Where they had all these great players, but they just didn't really fit together. And I also think it's important yet to reward those guys that aren't the big name guys and have them make the squad because that does two things. Number one, future players are convinced I got a shot. That the organization has to give me a shot. The other thing it does is it's a subtle note to the draft picks and the high draft picks on the team is, Hey, just because you're drafted high, doesn't mean you're going to stick around here. I mean, some teams will do everything under the sun. If you're a first or second or third round pick to keep you around, keep you around, keep you around. Yep. But they're saying, Hey, we don't we don't care about that. You know, so again, kind of getting both messages out there is good for your team. No doubt. 2:10:11Oil, feeling champions, odd and off the field. We think Hudson oil for being a back. I want to add this is a topic. And I, I'm asking a lot about practice squads in the NFL and how much guys make. I did a little background. Are you ready for this rock? Do you know? I know what it was when I was in the league. So younger players, two or fewer seasons in the league. When they're on the practice squad, they make 13,750 a week. So over a full 18 week season, you make $247,500 on the practice squad as a young guy. If you have better and experience more than two years, you can negotiate between 18,000 and about 23,000 a week. So you bring home on the practice squad as a veteran between 330 and $400,000. $11,000. Not a bad gig. I think most people think practice squad, they probably don't, they make scraps. That's not scraps. It's not scraps. Now, the thing that's different now about the practice squad than what I played is I think

2:11:12you had to be in your first, second or third year of eligible of, of, in the league. But then after that, you couldn't be in it. They've switched it now. We can have more better guys on there. And the philosophy back then was, you know, this keeps the league younger. And instead of having guys just hanging around, hanging around boom, we're going to move on. If you don't make it, you know, at some point you are, you're not going to make it. I see both sides. I think, you know, it's valuable to have. And now there's more members on the practice squad. But no, it's a, it's a nice living. I know guys that were just, I mean, over the moon happy to make the practice squad. And for good reason. All right. Bottom of the air, let's check news when we come back urban Meyer on the state of college football. And what he thinks of the job, Kurt Signetti and the coaching staff is done at Indiana. So maybe it's a late arriving. It's only 57 degrees there as well. I don't know. There you go. It's a great radio. It does. It is now. I think the NFL game doesn't? No. I think they're wearing shirts too. I think it's like a stripe the stadium type of thing. Okay. Of some sort. My eyes aren't that good. I guess. You're the one calling the game. Of course on their game day show. He said the following about the state of college football in this day and age. Take a listen to his thoughts on the game today. What it is right now.

2:20:32And I don't love this part of it. Right now this is all about can you put together a roster with the financial. Yeah. And I about be honest. I can't stand that part of it. But it's not that complicated. If you can put together and finance a great roster. You're going to have a better chance of winning. And again, that's not comfortable for me to say that. The team that pays the most for the roster wins. I mean, I never thought we'd get to that point. But here we are. There's no chance that teams that don't invest in roster can win this thing. I'm going to add this to Tom. The product on the field right now has never been better because you have grown men playing football. Yeah. I never coached a senior. I very rarely did I ever coach a senior. You know, they were gone. They were gone to the NFL after we took that approach. So we're going to recruit you play and you're gone in three years. And now you're seeing, you know, the Wolf range, the buckeyes and the Hoosiers. Their average age is 23 years old. Mm-hmm. I never coached a 23 year old. And there's a big difference between that 18 year old and a 23 year old. Urban Meyer on with Tom Brennan.

2:21:34There's just a lot that's different. Lots that changed. And he used the word. He's not comfortable with it. I think a lot of people are uncomfortable with it because it's a dollar's race of gotta spend to win. And if you don't spend good luck attracting the talent. Because you've related these stories before. The conversations that I've talked with coaches who say, you know, it used to be the conversation began with anything from facilities to, you know, what are you going to major in or whatever? Now it's before anything begins like, how much are you going to pay me? Yeah. Coach, here's my number. And if you're there, we can continue talking. If not, let's go elsewhere. Yeah, it's, now I won't say this, you know, kind of just to go opposite what Urban was saying. Yes, if you don't spend money, you're not going to have a good team. But it has added some parity. If I had told you five years ago that Indiana would win a national championship, you'd say it's impossible. So yes, you have the money. Now non-traditional programs or non-traditional winners,

2:22:34you're a non-Alebama, Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, have a chance. Now you have to get lucky and have a great donor base and find a way to get money. But in a way, it's added, it has added some parity and, you know, broadly, the group of teams that are possible to win it. But yes, my question is always this. So when Ohio State won it, was it two years ago? The roster was, I think, $22 million. LSU's roster is here as $44. I think Texas is around $42. So we're talking in three years. It's doubled. Yep. So in two years from now, when we're doing this show, are we talking about $60 million? At what point does it end? And at what point do you win a national title? But you're in the red. Yes. Like you've done all this. Yes. At one point you say, is it all worth it? And how often can you go back to the donor? That's the thing. It's going to take some more. And it's going to take some more. And, you know, into your point on donors, if Indiana has somebody like a Mark Cuban

2:23:36who's fully invested, then you've got to, that's what makes there will be different schools and have been different schools that you wouldn't think of. But then you think, oh, but they've got that donor who really is involved in this and he's going to pony up the money. And that changes the game. It does, but donor fatigue, right? Politicians to get, you know, the same guys are getting hit up by political campaigns every year, need money. And at some point you go, I don't have any money to give. They used to be in college athletics. Every five years, you know, the school would go to their top five, 10 donors and say, hey, look, we need to build a new waiting room. It's going to cost $30 million. Can we put you down for five? Sure. But now it's every year you're asking that guy for $5 million. Yep. And then you hear reports about, you know, so much coming and going and he's got to say, I'm paying money for these guys. Or they're watching the quarterback who they've invested millions in to get there. And he has a three-interception game. And it's like, why am I contributing money if you're not bringing me somebody better than that guy?

2:24:38Well, and that's a whole another conversation. Now they're saying, well, I'm paying the bills here. I think Johnny should be starting a quarterback instead of this guy. Yeah, so it's, you know, I think there's so much about it that's good. Again, I think, you know, the fact that, you know, if you're a fan of a roster and your roster and your team is not very good, that can change very quickly. Where it used to be, you had to hope and pray, you would put together three recruiting cycles. You got the right players in the stars aligned. Now you can flip a roster and boom, be good tomorrow. Or at least to that next year kind of thing. So in that way, it's good. But I mean, the money thing people are uncomfortable with, especially folks that are a remire. He can't see that because, you know, and it's hard for you and I to see it because it's a whole live has been a different way. But it is the thing that moves the needle. And then in the schools that don't embrace it are gonna have trouble. Perfect segue with roster turnover. Last week, for example, the UC Boston College game, each team had somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 new guys.

2:25:40And that's not like out of the norm, changed from one year to the next. I asked this every year. I probably asked you this every year. And I maintain one, the fact that there's preseason polls now, I can't even imagine anybody having any idea what a team has one year to the next when you're flipping 50 players on the roster. But more specifically to coaches who just don't know until week one. Could you ever envision reaching a point where I don't know if it's the NCAA who gives the go ahead, but there's a maybe a preseason college game or joint practices where you get a chance to practice against somebody else or play a preseason game against somebody else to get a greater feel for what you have before the actual week one of the season. Am I nuts or is there something to do? Absolutely not. I think joint practices make a lot of sense. I think that makes maybe more sense than a preseason game because I like when the NFL teams do it because you're getting the looks, but it's in a somewhat more controlled environment.

2:26:41You can pick and choose, we're gonna do this in this element of the practice. I would do this. Yeah, we're gonna go full go, but our quarterbacks still has a red jersey on it. That kind of thing. So I think that makes sense. You know, but then what he taught me? I mean, something to replay, you know, 15, 16 college games, you know, you're gonna have three of those and that's now up to 19. I mean, you know from a financial standpoint, if you allow joint practices, or maybe a school had maybe two joint practices, then I open those up to you sell tickets, fans pay to see stuff like that, put all that money into NIL. I mean, I'm just thinking about ideas. There's something along those, just the uncertainty would drive me nuts at just bringing in 50 new guys and really not knowing in week one what I've got. I think the way to pitch it though is, I mean, look, everybody hates it. I had Georgia Tennessee state last week. And it's kind of like, okay, what are we doing? These are not great fun matchups. What if you say, hey, look, we're gonna force you to play a tougher schedule

2:27:42and we're not gonna do it. We're not schedule an FCS teams all that, but you're gonna get a couple, you know, two, three warm up, sort of joint practice or preseason game kind of situations. I think coaches might be like, okay, because on the other side, I mean, last year, Notre Dame started with Miami and Texas A&M. And I thought that was the dumbest scheduling move ever. I'm like, I just did Florida. They played Long Island University. Why? Because they know, hey, in this age of roster movement, I don't know what my roster is. I need a warm up game. So you kind of have to have that and see where your roster is. Ohio State was a 55 point favorite over ball state last week. I mean, in the cupboard, but it's like, what? I mean, who really wants to watch that type of, I know the diards, you'll just take the win, but I mean, just, let me give you one more from Urban, before we get totally behind on time here. I thought this was a fantastic quote when Tom asked him about the job that Kurt Signetti and the coaching staff has done at IU and trying to find the words to describe

2:28:43just the job they are doing. Listen to what Urban said. It's hard to find the words. I've said this many times. It's the greatest coaching performance I've ever witnessed in my lifetime. And I would say in college football history, you never want to take away from the players because the players are one that did it. And they were excellent. But when you start, and I'm going to do this segment on big noon this coming Saturday from Bloomington is that they do the hard better than anyone I witnessed. For a viewer, they see it quarterback through a touchdown pass. And they think that's great. And it is great, but that's not hard. It's really hard as the tailback that has to block a 240 pound linebacker run it through the A gap or the offense line protecting that quarterback. The receiver learning how to separate. So when I talk about ball security, pass protection by a tailback, perimeter blocking that could go on and on. They do that better than anyone I've witnessed. Players don't wake up in the morning. So I'm going to go out and practice blocking a 240 pound linebacker. That's not fun. The receivers don't sit there. So I can't wait to go out block for 35 players

2:29:43during the game. It's got to be culture. That's got to be taught that's intentional behavior. Basically, it's called coaching. And they, they were the best in the country at it last year. And I think the best in my lifetime. How about that quote? It was great. And it's even harder now to get that kind of buy-in with the allowed player mobility. Because now players are like, well, I'm not going to play or you're going to make me do that. I'm not just going to go somewhere else, but he somehow can win and get some of those, you know, glue-type guys that you need that aren't that, you know, that are going to stay and buy in. And it's amazing. I mean, I'm sure you saw that article and just how efficient they're, I mean, they practice like an hour and 15 minutes. But like, you're getting like an hour and 14 minutes of work in that hour and 15 minutes, right? You make it a minute to get a drink. And then you want some out of there. Get out of there, go do your thing. And it truly is remarkable. I mean, what he's been able to do and how he's been able to flip that, he's something. I mean, I had the pleasure of covering when he was at J.M.U.

2:30:45and was very impressed. He had a perfect combination of like that old school to him that I think you need, but he was still, you know, up on the latest this and the latest that. And it was a good combo of that. His new commercial for one of the insurance companies or whatever, where the sprinkler is going. You see it with a water spray on him. I'm not seeing it. Just wait till you see it. It's just, because he keeps his stoic face and he's explaining how he's happy yet his face is expression losen. There's a, I forget who wrote the story this week. Or I give him credit, but it relates how his routine pregame is so regimented and down to the minute of everything is in the perfect order as he sends the team onto the field.
