About this episode
In this episode of The Buckeye Weekly Podcast, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr break down what Day means when he talks about a fun offense — and why the Buckeyes may be positioned to deliver one.
The discussion starts with explosiveness in the running game and the expectation that Bo Jackson, Isaiah West and Legend Bey can turn ordinary gains into much bigger plays. The guys also look at how Arthur Smith plans to involve players like Jeremiah Smith and Brandon Inniss, why the offense should be harder for defenses to predict, and how multiple plays can build off the same looks.
They also get into the offensive line, where Carson Hinzman says Smith has brought a sense of “tangible violence” to the running game, and why a more physical, efficient and explosive offense could be a lot more enjoyable for everybody involved — especially Ohio State fans.

Hello everybody. Welcome to the Buck Island with the podcast. I'm Tony Gurdam and here as always with Tom or Tom. What's it going? Tony, I am ready to have some fun. Yes. Will it be as much fun as the Ohio State offense this season? Well, that's what we're here to talk. Well, that's uh... I don't know that we need a game thread of the podcast. The comments and the complaints at that point. But the games this year, the offense at least, according to Ryan Day, he did say they'll have a fun offense and what that means specifically for one, he's talking balance, he's talking explosion, he's talking all of these things. And I'm just wondering and I asked him, fun for the coaches or fun for the players and fun for their fans because that's really what's most important.
But he said it's going to be fun for everybody and if you've got a balanced offense that executes and that is efficient, Tom, it can be fun for everybody. But really the most important thing here is fun for the fans. Well, yeah, fun, book to the fans is that's your move in the ball, but you're also it's probably explosive. Now, I think Ohio State fans had a heck of a lot of fun watching them put together that 20-play driver, whatever it was in Ann Arbor last ball. I think they, you know, that can be fun as well. But the high flying, you know, Cardale Jones throwing the Devin Smith down there somewhere ball like that's kind of fun. The offense that they're striving for this season, they've been talking about it about the running game a bunch. You got to have, you got to be able to hit bigger plays, you got to be able to turn the short games into the long game. It sounds like they're optimistic that they've got guys on the roster that can do this. We talked about legend Bayonet Show earlier this week, but even Bochak's in Isaiah West, it feels like they think that they're going to get more of that, you know, whether you want to call it yards for carry or
explosives or fun, it seems like they're going to expect me to get more of all of it from those guys. Yeah. And Ryan Day said he does expect works most of plays. He's seen it in practice, seen it in fall camp with the running backs, being able to break tackles and just get into that second level and then go from there. And I'm thinking the fun offense is time are the ones where like back in college, we would rewatch the game on the VCR kids, but there are times and maybe maybe last year, like I don't know how often was the offense fun to rewatch where, you know, they're even during the Jim Dressel years, you stood 10, 10, 10 times where it's like I want to rewatch some of 10 again, but the rewatch ability, I think is a key component or a byproduct of a fun offense. And we'll see what that looks like this year, but Ryan Day is talking about everything that Arthur Smith has brought being, you know, the confidence, the efficiency of the entire offense we've
talked with receivers, I asked Jeremiah Smith last week, like so what is different about Arthur Smith's offense for you as a receiver? And he's like, what's different? We're going to get me in the ball. And so when he receivers as I and Brandon, in a sense, something similar, if all, if all you know about an offense is that Jeremiah Smith is going to get the ball, he last pretty good start right there that that will answer a lot of the questions that people had last year about the Ohio did offense. So yeah, and Brandon and his talked about the fact that Arthur Smith went to him and said, like, here's our plan to get you the ball. That, you know, is that just pandering to these guys? No, I think it's very much, we're planning on involving everyone. And if it's, if it is just you're going to run the ball and you're going to throw the ball to Jeremiah Smith, well, the defense figures that out eventually. And it's like, this sounds great in principle, but you've got to be able to use your tight ends. You got to be able to use your other riders. You've got to have, you got to have roles for everyone where, you know, this kind of goes to what every time we talk about Arthur Smith's offense, it's, you've got the thing.
And then you've got the thing that goes off of that first thing. And then you've got the thing that goes off of the second thing, which goes off of the first thing. There's going to be a route combination where it's, okay, you're going to throw those. Blind to Jeremiah Smith. Okay. Well, Brandon and his is going to loop around behind that slant. And then you're going to pump it to Jeremiah Smith. And then you're going to throw it to Brandon and then the safety is going to be following Jeremiah Smith and all of a sudden Brandon and his is open, you know, whatever, whatever the combination is, you're going to have plays off a play is off a place. And eventually you do involve everyone. Yeah. No. And you mentioned the pandering because that's something that Brandon and his talks about with Arthur Smith. He's like, it's not just telling us what we want to hear because he's showing us a coach could just say, yeah, don't worry, kid, we're going to get you the ball. Thanks, coach, but he's spending time to show him all of the different ways. It's like, you're not going to waste that time. If you're not actually going to do it, you're not going to show it, kid. This is how let's watch some Jackson Smith and Chigba. And so that's what we want to do with you. Like, you're not going to waste the time if you're just trying to humor somebody. And there's the
humor here is going to be a, it's a fun kind of humor. Basically, where I was saying is able to run well. And then once you do that, everything else comes off of that plan action or whatever. Defences coming up to stop the run. You don't even have to play action as much that because you can just throw however you want. But when Arthur Smith is very focused on getting the ball to the key guys and then able to do that. Like you said, out of looks that are completely the same, but the ball is going somewhere else or the play is going somewhere else or whatever. Keeping defenses on your toes. That's one of the things that Pete Pierce has said, where it's just hard to tell what they're doing. When defensive have defenses have trouble with you, boom, at the fun offense to watch as well. Right. It's a fun offense for you because it's a bad off, because it's a bad experience. You know, when the person you don't like it, yeah, exactly. Shot and Freud is exactly right. Yes. You, I mean, again, this is this is you go back to the drive against Michigan, where Ohio State
is putting the final nail in the coffin of, as it turned out, the whole Sharanmore era, but the Michigan team and Michigan season Michigan's playoff hopes and all that kind of stuff. Think about how much fun Ohio State offense were having watching that drive where it's the team that was told that whether tough enough and the team that was told it couldn't do it in, you know, you can do it when it's perfect conditions, but you can't do it against whatever. And then just went out and went, no, and yeah, Ohio State fans are having fun watching that. You know, who else is having fun? Because I was watching him on the sideline. Brian Day was enjoying himself during that whole. There was a little bit of point proving I think that was going on there. And that's, I think, you know, not necessarily this exact same thing where you're going to be doing it exactly like that. But the offense that makes fans happy is long as it's productive. Yeah. As long as it's not just, you know, it's fun, but you know, you're running this annexation of Puerto Rico, but then you're punting like it has to, it has to be more than, it has to be more, uh, more than just fun. It has to be efficient. It has to be explosive.
It has to be effective. But if you can check those boxes and it seems like they have the personnel and the coaching staff to do it this year, that, that seems like that's something you should make everyone happy. Arthur Smith's Shadden Coast offense, something. Shadcoast. But the offensive line is also excited and haven't thought it. I think if, if your offensive line is doing that, then, then, then there's going to be fun. These are fun guys. Fun guys to be around. When they're angry, and as a Carson Hensman said, the, the Arthur Smith guy, he brings tangible violence to the off-fronts and the offensive line in the running game, as opposed to the intangible violence was just being in the right place at the right time, I guess, the right place at the wrong time. But they want to be physical and set a tone and have fun. And one of the interesting things that Carson Hensman said was that, but also being, being about your business and being a man about it. Like you want to have fun, you want to, you want to push people into the ground,
but you don't get penalized for you don't want to celebrate too much. You just want to know, this is the next step to a championship. This is the next step that we have to take. And when offensive lineman are having fun, the entire team is having fun. Yeah, but well, this is one of these we've talked on shows this week about, you know, well, sometimes cliches or cliches for a reason. Games being one of the trenches. If your offensive line is having fun, they're probably pushing some people around. If they're pushing some people around, your offense is moving. If your offense is moving, you got a pretty good chance of going to the football game. Where did the football game is? Fuck that is that is something that is, you know, even even some of the game that we're not as high flying over the like Jim Tressel era, Ohio State fans still enjoyed themselves, I think more or less. So, yeah, I think this isn't this is an offensive line that enjoyed playing with each other. Yeah, we get the especially the three guys and the interior that have had their whole careers together, but also just this is a, this should be an offense where you're doing the work and then you are seeing the results where you've got some running backs who could potentially, you know, you block it for five.
You're really working your butt off to block it for five and it doesn't turn into six. It turns into 60 and you're blocking your, your diving after guys and you're picking up that blitzer, whatever it is. And that allows Julian to throw it to Jeremiah Smith for 50 yard. That's more fun than well, I dove and I picked up the blitzer, but then he threw it away. Like you, you can, you know, the same process, I, you know, for some of these guys leading to better results can make it a whole lot more fun. You know, it's interesting because I go back to my college days of watching from Ohio Stadium and I'm watching players like Eddie George and Terry Glenn and David Boston and Michael Wiley and and and and that type. And so like when it was there, I would always have said this before in the show, like, okay, there to 34, this could be a 66 year touchdown. Yeah. Yeah. You would just think like, okay, this could be a net. I want to know right away how long, how long was that because somebody's going to ask, I mean, that was 66 yard.
Those are fun offenses. And I think there's every possibility that you're going to see a fun offense here with the bunk eyes as well. At least if you want to believe that coach and all the players that are talking about it. But of course, this is the time for talking because the games have not yet been played. But they will soon, very, very soon fact. In fact, I'm like the games where we played and we'll be talking about it. We'll be covering them. We'll be at the games.
