That is the World Trade Center and we have unconfirmed reports this morning that a plane has
clashed into one of the towers. It looked like it was moving slowly. The line itself up to hit the building directly. The car man goes to me. Wow, I never seen a plane flying so low. And we looked out at it, all the sudden boom. It seemed like it wasn't even real. I was still shaking. I saw it, hit the tower and plane everywhere. Oh my god, I don't believe it. Ryan Lutz, they're on the scene as we were talking. You just heard it. I was looking at it. It's outside the northeast corner of the border. I think we saw a smoke coming out. Everybody started running out and we saw the plane on the other side of the building and there was smoke everywhere. People are jumping out the window. Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center. And an apparent terrorist attack on our... I just visited that building. I got a lot of friends who worked in that building. I've seen you watch it at the front. And we have now had eye with the supports from our sources in Washington say they did see a plane crash in the vicinity of the Pentagon. I got a nine year old sister that just called me and asked me why people hate the America.
We were standing here and we were just discussing the things that were going on. The second building just crumbled right in front of us. The Trade Center begins from the skyline for New York to prove that the US$1000 was the only country in New York. It's hard to put it into words and maybe one doesn't need to. Both trade towers were thousands of people work. On this day, Tuesday have now been attacked and destroyed. I'm just a firefighter. This is... Tell. I've never seen anything like it. It's... It's one of the worst things I've ever seen in my life. But we're all brothers. We've all got to stick together.
Oh... Oh... Oh... Oh... 553 AM, Muhammadata and Abdul Aziz Al-Amari, photographed by security cameras reporting a small plane in Portland, Maine. They fly to Boston's Logan Airport. Two passengers later say that Ata and Al-Amari sat separate from each other on the flight. They kept quiet, trying not to draw attention to themselves. The 6 AM, President Bush is preparing for his morning jog at the Colony Beach in Tennis Resort in Longbow, Key, Florida, where he has stayed. A van of men of Middle Eastern descent tried to enter the resort claiming they are to have a poolside interview. With the President, they are turned away for not having an appointment.
6.50 AM, Ata and Al-Amari land of Boston's Logan Airport. 6.51 AM, according to the Washington Post, at least two workers at the instant messaging company, OdaGo, received warnings of an upcoming attack on the World Trade Center. It's scheduled to fly to San Francisco but sits on the tarmac delayed. 8.13 AM, flight controllers and flight 11's pilots have their last conversation. Pilots respond when told to turn right, but failed to fly when commanded to monthly. 8.14 AM, flight 175 takes off from Boston bound for LA. Order 56 passengers, seven flight attendants, two pilots and five hijackers. 8.19 AM, flight 11 veers dramatically off course. Boston flight control assumes the plane has been hijacked. However, they wait five minutes before notifying other flight control centers. And they wait another 20 minutes before contacting Norway. 8.20 AM, American Airlines flight 77 departs Delus International Airport in Washington, DC bound for Los Angeles.
On board are 58 passengers, five flight attendants, two pilots and five hijackers. 8.21 AM, flight attendant Amy Swini calls American Airlines ground manager Michael Woodward. She tells him calmly, quote, listen to me very carefully. I'm on flight 11, who's in hijack, two flight attendants have been stabbed in a first class passenger that's had his throat slashed. She delays the hijackers seat numbers. In minutes, staff have their names, phone numbers, addresses and credit card information. Amy Swini stays on the line till the end. 8.41 AM, through an open mic in the cockpit of flight 175, flight controllers hear loud voices telling everyone to stay in their seats. 8.42 AM, after a 40 minute delay, United Flight 93 takes off for Newark Airport. On board are 38 passengers, five flight attendants, two pilots and four hijackers. At the same time, flight 175 beers off course over the state of New Jersey.
8.43 AM, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld is in the Pentagon speaking on terrorism. He says, let me tell you, I've been around the block a few times, there will be another event. 8.44 AM, Amy Swini, the flight attendant on board flight 11, who's been speaking on an air phone with American Airlines personnel, is asked if she can recognize where she is. She answers, I see water, I see the buildings, I see buildings, oh my God, pray for us. 8.44 AM, Peter Hansen of board flight 175 calls his father and says, oh my God, they just stand the airline hostess. I think the airline is being hijacked. Although his cell phone cuts out twice, he's able to report to his father, the flight attendants were being stabbed in order to force the pilot to unlock the cockpit door. 8.45 AM, two F-15s are ordered to scramble from Otis Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts to try and find flight 11. One minute later, at 8.46, flight 11 slams into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York.
A French film crew working on a documentary about New York City firefighters manages to catch the crash on film. 8.48 AM, flight 77 suddenly changes course near Southeast from Kentucky and heads back towards Washington. The hijackers tell the passengers to call their families and say goodbye because they are all going to die. 8.50 AM, a mechanic who routinely gets calls from attendants about broken items at United's maintenance center in San Francisco receives a call from a female attended on flight 1175. She says, oh my God, the crew's been killed, a flight attendant's been stabbed, we've been hijacked. Then the line went dead. 9 AM, President Bush on his way to read a children at Booker Elementary School in Florida is told of the crash to the World Trade Center.
9-01 AM, United Airlines warns all of its aircraft of the potential for cockpit intrusion and orders of cockpit doors to be barricaded. However, United does not mention the hijackers. Flight 93 still on course acknowledges the message. ände crashed at liberty as the latest digital information is getting steady in the process of Taylor Holmes. 9-03 AM, no one wants to hold a vá. Bea switch off trying to soften or don't kill Osgee by turning his sheep around on 260 minutes later. I'm playing disappointed, I'm filling it in full heart. This World Trade Center begins out there skyline for New York. So these officers told everybody to form a human chain. And we held on to each other. We flashed a light, and we direct us to building five.
And we went out building five. Have you seen people bleeding and what was it used to? Oh, everybody could see that. Do you want blood? Is blood? Everybody's bleeding. People laying all over the floor. It's horrible. 9.05 AM. While waiting to speak to the group of second graders, President Bush is told of the second World Trade Center hit. 9.16 AM. The FAA notifies NORAD that Flight 93 may have been hijacked. It is thought that one of the hijackers was in the cockpit prior to takeoff. On the flight recorder, the pilots make mention of a guest who is a colleague. It is common for a guest pilot to ride in the cockpit's jumper seat. 9.17 AM. All New York City area airports are shut down and all bridges and tunnels of New York are closed. 9.24 AM. The FAA informs NORAD that Flight 77 may have been hijacked and appears to be heading toward Washington, DC. 9.25 AM. Flight 93 checks in with Cleveland Ground Control and Utters Good Morning.
A few minutes later, three men on board stand up, put red bandanas around their heads and break into the cockpit. One grabs the loud speaker mic unaware that ground control could hear his every word. President Bush speaks privately with National Security Advisor Rice. He leaves the school immediately. He makes a quick comment to reporters calling the crashes and apparent terrorist attack on our country. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a difficult moment for America. Unfortunately, we will be going back to Washington after my remarks. Secretary of Rod Pays and Lieutenant Governor will take the podium and discuss education. I do want to thank the folks here at the Booker Elementary School for their hospitality.
Today we have had a national tragedy. Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country. I have spoken to the Vice President, to the Governor of New York, to the Director of the FBI, and have ordered that the full resources of the federal government go to help the victims and their families and to conduct a full-scale investigation to hunt down and to find those folks who committed this act. Terrorism against our nation will not stand. And now if you join me in a moment of silence, my God bless the victims, their families, and America. Thank you very much.
9.31am Three F-16s leave Langley Air Force Base to intercept flight 77. At about the same time, hijackers aboard flight 77 tell the passengers the plane is going to hit the White House. 9.32am The New York Stock Exchange closes. 9.33am Flight 77 is spotted flying over the Capitol Beltway at about 7,000 feet. Suddenly, the plane makes a sharp turn and begins dropping towards the Pentagon. The plane is soon lost by radar. 9.34am aboard flight 93, Tom Burnett phones his wife to tell her of the hijacking. She tells him of the planes flown into the World Trade Center. He responds, Oh my God, this is a suicide mission. 9.40am The FAA orders the entire nationwide air traffic system shut down.
They large jet aircraft perhaps the size of a large passenger plane came very low. Clipping off light poles as it approached the Pentagon, it slammed into the side of the Pentagon. And it drove itself from the outer ring all the way to the airport. 9.41am Flight 77 slams into the Pentagon. President Bush gives the order to shoot down any plane refusing to turn away from Washington DC. And as you can imagine, there was a great deal of shock and a lot of the parade activity in the West Wing of the White House when this happened. Shortly thereafter, the White House was actually evacuated. Well, let me just describe the scene that we have here and I'll back up a little bit. But right now I'm looking at the charts of the size of the Pentagon, a huge gating hole on the side where the Pentagon helicopter is located, the size of the faces are in the cemetery. In front of me is a long line of rescue personnel with backboards. They're just waiting for victims to be brought out so they can rush them to nearby medical facilities.
9.48am Tom Burnett calls his wife again from Flight 93 and tells her, don't worry, we took a vote and we're going to do something. 9.49am The White House is evacuated. 9.58am Todd Beamer aboard Flight 93 puts down the air phone he'd been using to speak with an operator for the last few minutes. The operator stays on the line and hears Todd say to a nearby passenger, are you ready? Let's roll. We were standing here and we were just discussing the things that were going on and the second building just crumbled right in front of us. It is difficult to make out through the debris and smoke but it does appear that a portion, the top portion of the building has collapsed down to the streets below. Oh my gosh. It's not there anymore. That should be it. Thanks very much. The whole side has collapsed. The whole building has collapsed.
The whole building has collapsed. The building has collapsed. That's the southern tower you're talking about. The second building that we witnessed the airplane enter has been, the top half has been fully involved in plane. It just collapsed. There is panic on the street. Thousands of people running up church street which is what I'm looking out on. Trying to get away but the entire, at least as far as I can see the top half of the building, at least half of it. I can't see below that. Half of it just started with a gigantic rumble folded in on itself and collapsed in a huge form of smoke and dust. 9.59 am. The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapses. We were talking about massive casualties. We saw what happened in the cockpit. It was a very active take charge of sort of young men. And I'm just going to add to the chaos and the trauma of the day by saying that a large plane has now crashed just north.
Or I say just but crashed about 10 o'clock in the last 15 minutes. North of Somerset County Airport about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. 10.06 am. Flight 93 crashes just north of Somerset County Airport 80 miles east of Pittsburgh. We have it from other people, another man on the aircraft who called his wife. We said that they were, he was, he and some other passengers were hoping to get out these guys somehow. 10.08 am. President Bush is told of flight 93's crash. He asked, did we shoot it down or did it crash? Several hours later, he is assured it crashed. 10.24 am. The FAA orders all inbound transatlantic flights to be diverted to Canada. We heard a rumble like I've never heard before and a firefighter ran towards me. We ran as fast as we could.
I lost my shoes. I fell down, he picked me up and slammed me into a wall and covered me with chemicals. The second tower, the only one that was standing tower number one, just we saw some kind of explosion. A lot of smoke come out of the top of the tower and then it collapsed out onto the streets below. Much like we saw the first tower, it's about a half hour ago. The World Trade Center bolt towers are now gone and my god, look at the skylines without the towers. Skyline, no towers, just a billows a smoke. The second and last tower, the World Trade Tower is just collapsed. It is about 10.30 Eastern time. And the tower has collapsed. We did not hear an explosion. There was no sign telling us previous any kind of warning that the building was going to collapse. The warning for us for people running in our direction and that's when we started to get out of the way. 1028 AM. The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. Seeing the entire lower half of that hat completely covered it's smoke, debris, dust, everything,
well south of Canal Street, it's just completely uncovered in this smoke and dust at this time. There is not anything recognizable of what were the two trade towers. It's hard to put it into words and maybe one doesn't need to. Both trade towers, where thousands of people work on this day, Tuesday, have now been attacked and destroyed with thousands of people either in them or in the immediate area adjacent to them. This is, there is simply no way to accurately describe the emotion disavokes in people all over the world. The crams of the United States and enemies of the United States is right.
11 AM. Evacuations are ordered at various skyscrapers around the country including the Sears Tower in Chicago. Major tourist attractions are closed including Walt Disney World, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Seattle Space Needle and the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. 1104 AM. President Bush puts the US military on high worldwide alert. Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward and freedom will be defended. I want to reassure the American people that full resources of the federal government are working to assist local authorities to save lives and to help the victims of these attacks. Magnum mistake, the United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts.
I've been in regular contact with the Vice President, Secretary of Defense, the National Security Team and my cabinet. We have taken all appropriate security precautions to protect the American people. Our military at home and around the world is on high alert status. And we have taken the necessary security precautions to continue the functions of your government. We have been in touch with the leaders of Congress and with world leaders to assure them that we will do whatever is necessary to protect America and Americans. I ask the American people to join me in saying a thanks for all the folks who have been fighting hard to rescue our fellow citizens and to join me in saying a prayer for the victims and their families.
The resolve of our great nation is being tested, the Magnum mistake. We will show the world that we will pass this test. God bless. 1-10 PM. The Navy dispatches aircraft carriers and missile destroyers to New York and Washington. Around the country, fighters, transports and refueling planes scrambled to get airborne and patrol 50 cities in the U.S. 4-10 PM. The 47th story building known as World Trade Center 7 is on fire. Firefighters find it nearly impossible to get close enough to the building to stop the fire in a little over an hour, building seven collapses, making the Trade Center's devastation complete. 8-30 PM. President Bush addresses the nation. Good evening. Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts.
The victims were in airplanes or in their offices, secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers, moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror. The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness and a quiet, unyielding anger. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorists attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America.
These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world, and no one will keep that light from shining. Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature, and we responded with the best of America, with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring of for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could. Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C., to help with local rescue efforts. Our first priorities to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution, to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks.
The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies in Washington, which had to be evacuated today, are reopening for a central personnel tonight, and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business as well. The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible, and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts, and those who harbor them. I appreciate the very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance. America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world, and we stand together to win the war against terrorism.
Tonight I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us, spoken through the ages in Psalm 23. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for you are with me. This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day, yet we go forward to defend freedom, and all that is good and just in our world. Thank you, good night, and God bless America. I survived nine months in captivity, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them.
