2:00I'm Tom Sussman with WMOV and it's the Valley today. And on the phone with me is Cheryl Miller, city council person for the city of Ripley, but also a member of the Ripley High School Alumni Association. And they're in the process of doing things to upgrade the look of the school and explain what it is that you all are bringing to Ripley High School. Well, we are adding another piece of Viking art to the exterior of the school. As you approach the school above the parking lot, there is the wall that says Ripley High School into the left of that area has always been a very large blank space. So we are going to fill that space with the 18 by 8 Viking ship and it's going to be made out of the same aluminum that the Viking head was. And again, that aluminum was donated to us from Constellium. They have been wonderful to support these projects.

3:01It's been a project in the works for about a year. You know, we've been meeting with engineers and designers and contractors and getting the plans laid out and all the details worked out. And the exciting part of that is all of the community members who were a part of the initial project with the Viking head are on board to do this project with us as well. So they have a little experience. You know, they share the same vision that we do. And so many of those folks are Ripley High School alumni. So it is just truly a community project. So who helped you design it? The design. It's actually the alumni association's logo and it was created by Mike Rubin and Courtney Schien Dudley. And that came together quite a few years ago. That's been our alumni logo for quite some time. So we're really proud of that to have those key figures and to bring their vision to such

4:04a beautiful example of art and something that will be a focal point at the school and actually the community for, you know, until the end of time. So you cut it out and made it. The medal once again came from Constellium. We took that to Nitro to Maldigrath and our friends at Maldigrath are the ones who cut out the design for the Viking head. So we knew them well. They cut it out and then Ramsey has helped us with designing the boats and the things that will attach it to the wall and, you know, getting all that engineering together in the blue prints and United who is doing the construction at Ripley Middle School currently. They're going to help us hang it. Ronnie Martin, alumni, has spent weeks and weeks. Once the shape was cut from Maldigrath, it was taken to Dickerson and Dickerson put it together to make sure all the brackets were in place and it was in, you know, good shape.

5:07So they put it together, assembled it and then disassembled it and then we transported that to Ronnie Martin shop and he has spent countless hours sanding it, you know, finishing it, cleaning it, polishing it and then he painted the design on it and then buffed it and sealed it and let it cure. And so then this morning we transported it from Ronnie shop back to Dickerson for it to be reassembled and then sometime in the next two weeks it'll be transported back to Ripley High School and my goal was to have this accomplished before homecoming. So it looks like we're going to meet that goal. Don't win as homecoming. September 25th. I mean, you're just a couple of weeks. You've got to be really excited. I am thrilled. I am thrilled into, you know, see something come to fruition that you worked on for over a year and to see those designs actually before you today, it was just an incredible moment. I have such community support, you know, we could not have done this without, I will

6:11tell you the leadership from Dale Ruben, our alumni president, he has been extraordinary in pulling all the pieces together and helping with the engineering of it and the design and countless phone calls and it is such an extraordinary team of people, the alumni as well as the community partners. And I love that when you see that much support and encouragement and everyone is so excited about the project, not just the alumni, the whole community is just really excited and thrilled and the high school and Mr. Banton and the staff and the students. Cards surged higher in July by the most in three years because high inflation is forcing a lot of people to charge for food, gas and other everyday items. Oil prices higher and late trading above $94 a barrel, the highest since July.

10:18That follows strikes on an Iranian oil transfer hub early Wednesday morning local time. Now earlier, oil was above $93 a barrel, sparking fears about inflation. And with Canada today, launching retaliatory tariffs against American-made imports, stocks ended lower at the close to down down 628 points of more than 1% drop. The Nasdaq was down 86 the S&P lost 45. Move over Door Dash, Uber Eats and Grubhub because Walmart, the world's biggest retailer, unveiled plans to use its growing delivery network to enter the food delivery business. From more on the win, I go to Vicon said coach Ryan Simon. How you go on the road, you take the hatchet? What's it always like when you win that ball game? What goes through your head as a Jackson County man?

13:23That game has been around forever. Both communities, it's a big game for both communities and it means a lot to the kids. It means a lot to the coaches. It means a lot to the fans. So atmosphere is always great. It doesn't really matter which he's got the home game, he's got the way game. We brought a lot of fans over there and they had a lot of fans that made for a great atmosphere and it was a competitive game. Yeah, a little cagey there at half time, 7-7. What was your message to the guys at the break? Oh, well, I can't go into particulars about what I said. FCC. Yeah, exactly. It was pretty heated. That was very happy with our, you know, I felt like we were already going into it. For whatever reason, we definitely were not. So we had some pretty intense conversations and fixed some problems at halftime. And I was pleased with how we did. We improved and got better in a second half and we were able to run the ball and do some things to put a lot of scores on board in a second half.

14:25But yeah, I was definitely not happy and it was not a very good message to him in the first half. Do you find in this generation does the kick in the butter, the pat on the back work better? What's the psychology behind that for you? I've always been, you know, a believer that, you know, if you get onto a kid, you know, you got to bring it back up, you know, at some point, you can't leave him down. So that's kind of the way I've always approached it. You know, they got to know that you care about him, but, you know, they also got to know that they need to be told when they're going wrong. And I think everybody, you know, pretty much falls into that same description and that's kind of the way I try to do it. You know, obviously, you know, if you're to kids when they're doing things wrong, but also try to pick them back up, you know, maybe at the end of practice or at the end of a game or something like that to kind of get your spears back up and let them know that I care about them. I don't know if you guys do game balls or stickers or what, but who got the individual recognition this week? I think Jordan Adams, you know, he was coming week one. He was definitely not 100% back.

15:26He was dealing with a pretty significant leg injury that had us all scared at the beginning of the season. But, you know, he was, he really wanted to get back for that, that's a, that's a middle game and came back and I don't think he was quite had that. He just wasn't himself. So I think, you know, with him coming in and I think he had over 100 and a second half took the ball and took charge. And so I'd say I definitely have to give the game ball to him. Playing the Giants at Crossley Field, the Reds led four to one after the fourth, but starting in the fifth, the Reds bats went to sleep. The Giants tied the game in the seventh at four all and the score remained tied through regulation and into extra innings. The Giants relievers were unhittable literally as the Reds went hitless from the fifth to the

He pitched eight innings of three hit relief, shutting out the Giants and finally in the bottom of the fifteenth Bobby toll and singled in the winning run, 10 innings, no hits. Brownfield Agricultural News on WMOV is brought to you by Farmers Feed of Ripley. Corn was lower Tuesday, soybeans, cattle and hogs finished higher. I'm John Perkins with a Brownfield market update. When it comes to short stature corn, it all started with Stein. For decades, they've been focused on unique hybrids and delivered top yields. Stein invented short stature corn, then they perfected it. Soybeans were up on these strengths in soybean and crude oils. November beans were six and a half, higher at 1316 and a quarter. And January was up 7 at 1332. Corn was down and profit taking.

18:33December was three and a quarter lower at 533 and a half. Arches down three and a quarter at 549. Live and feeder cattle were sharply higher, had a widespread direct trade. October live is up 407 at 2702. December was 450 higher to 1922. October feeders are up $5.30 of 325.45. And with pork higher at midday, October hogs are up 195 at 8425. December was 2507 higher at 7505. Now here's Megan Grebner with your look at cash livestock. Megan? Thanks, John. It's been a pretty quiet start for direct cash cattle trade activity in this holiday shortened week. Bids in asking prices did not surface Tuesday. Look for significant trade volume to hold out until sometime Thursday or Friday, especially if business follows the trend of recent weeks. As submitted, cattle slaughter was 109,000 head. That's up 3000 on the weekend down more than 11,000 on the year. The cash hog market continues to struggle to find significant support.

19:34The sellers have leverage and can control the pace of business, which is slow to get going. Following the long holiday weekend, the industry continues to monitor the availability of market ready hogs and hog weights, especially as it relates to demand. And while there have been some bright spots in both global and domestic markets, there are lingering concerns about long term strength. Estimated hog slaughter was 483,000 head up 11,000 on the weekend about even on the year. Which on parkans I'm making Rebner for Brownfield. Be aware, ticks are there. As you head outdoors, remember to avoid tall grass, wear light colored full coverage clothing, and use EPA registered repellent. Be sure to thoroughly check for ticks after you head in for the day. If you find any ticks, remove them carefully with tweezers and watch for symptoms such as fever, headache or rash. Governor Morrissey says law enforcement activities are up in things like violent crime and drug trafficking are down. Violent crime has dropped by more than 5% and property crimes have gone down by more than 13%. What we're doing is we're sending a message. Crime has no safe haven in West Virginia and it's important that we keep our people safe. Morrissey credited a strong partnership between local state and federal agencies. 24:43A Charleston man will spend five years in prison for creating a scarlet, lately field in May, 20 year old J.K. Harrison heard his sentence this afternoon. Harrison fired his gun at another vehicle while driving by the stadium on May 2nd. He said in court today, he's sorry for his actions. I just heard what other sentences that the court gives me. And the first opportunity I will have, I will get a job and work on being a good father and a real man to my children and protect the member of society. Harrison gets credit for 130 days served. We're learning the names of the man and woman killed in a side-by-side crash over the weekend in Webster County. Deputy, say 43-year-old Richard Chandler of Hurk, and 24-year-old Maggie Driggs of Charleston died in the crash Saturday night. They were killed near Bergoo near the Webster Randolph County line. 28:58I'm Tom Sussman and welcome to the Valley today on WMOV and Mark Curtis, former political reporter with our next start, TV stations in West. I want to reach out to you and catch him today and want to talk about the Republican mini convention that's coming up in Texas. This is kind of a midterm convention not generally done by political parties in the past, but when it comes to a Republican party led by Donald Trump, nothing is status quo. What do you make of this convention? Well, you're right and this is the first time ever that the Republicans have held a midterm convention. I don't know the Democrats have held one either, but I think the first thing that tells you is the party, including from the top down from President Trump on down, knows they're a serious danger in the midterm elections and danger of losing control of both a house and the Senate. And this is in some ways perhaps a hail Mary Pass to try to save their majorities. I was listening to some folks talk about this over the weekend and they were talking

29:59about how the Republican party just doesn't have the excitement for turnout that the Democrats have and part of this is trying to get people excited. Yeah, well, the Democrats are motivated. They're behind, they're close enough in the margins that they know they can they can win control of the house and or the Senate. They could really they could take either chamber or they could take both chambers. And so they're excited. They're motivated to get out there. Republicans on the other hand have a difficult time. We just finished a three day Labor Day weekend with the highest Labor Day gas prices in history. We are having the highest diesel fuel prices in history. There's no end inside to the Iran war and that of course is what's driving up oil and gas prices. So, you know, people vote their pocketbooks. They always do it. So I think that the President and everybody on down the line knows that the economy is going to play a big role and they're going to have to give some speeches in in Texas that might you to suggest that the ship is about to turn. Ken Ann, resting one time with Mark Curtis political correspondent. Yeah, every time the President tries something to try and work on affordability, it just seems like there's another set of problems.

31:01For example, he was talking about bringing in all this beef from a foreign country to help reduce prices, but then the whole agriculture community is jumping stiff leg because they don't like the fact that beef's coming in from another country. Yeah, none of that. Of course, we have trade wars with tariffs between the US and Canada and the US and other country and tariffs do nothing but drive up prices because those prices are generally passed on to the consumer in the ends. You know, in that causes inflation and it's a, look, we're six weeks away from this election. There's not a lot of time to write the ship and get it straight now between now and then we'll have two more inflation reports that get out. One, I believe next week and then one in a second or third week in October. And if inflation is still up, that's bad news for party and power. Well, in part of the problem is you have politicians and academics and who say, well, you know, the report, the inflation report if it's up or it's down. But, you know, when you have a housewife who's got to feed their family and they go in and the advertised price for beef is $10 a pound for

32:03for hamburger, it's hard to convince them there's not an affordability problem in this country. Yeah, I'm one of millions of people that had an outdoor cookout on Labor Day and I went in bought my working back ribs to click on my grill and I had George's dropped at bottom anyway. I bit the bullet. It was, you know, it's a holiday. You got to celebrate. But I was like, oh my god, I've never paid $30 for a rack of ribs in my life. And so those things, those are, those are, you know, top of mind issues to a lot of voters. Flipside, you have the Democrats and set it coming to the middle. It seems they're going to the left. Does that play in the Republicans favor? Or do you think the affordability crisis is just so far out of hand? There's nothing they can do. Yeah, that's, both parties have problems and that's the Democrats big problem. They're having essentially a civil war and the Democratic Party between the mainstream moderate Democrats of long ago versus people who are openly socialist. The Democrats Socialists of America is growing in numbers and a lot of candidates aren't afraid to put that banner on their stage. And so they're having an internal fight. So this is not, this is not a slam dunk for the Democrats.

33:06You know, you got to race in Texas. Texas may be the state that determines the total of the Senate. You have a very liberal, if not progressive, James Telarico, the Democrat running against Ken Paxton, the Senate Attorney General. It's a dead heat. And Republicans know they have to win this race, which is why Donald Trump has pumped $10 billion into Paxton's campaign. But for the president, it would seem that if he loses control of the legislature or the Senate in the House, then he's going to have a hard time keeping discipline in the final two years of his administration with the Republicans that are remaining. Yeah, and I'll flag a big issue that I think is going to be at the forefront, maybe not on election day, but in the coming two years, either Clarence Thomas or Samuel O'Leato is going to retire from the US Supreme Court through the two oldest members. And if Democrats have control, they're going to be able to cut the majority. There's a lot on the table. He was able to put two kickoffs for touchbacks. I think he had 10 tackles on the game and a touchdown on offense. Offensively though, really was led by our quarterback Colton Jones. He was able to comply, you know, a hundred yards in the air with a score and then had two rushing touchdowns on the ground. But you know, it was a great team effort. We had six kids score on the night and anytime you can say you have six different kids reach the end zone in a game and that's huge for us. And defensively, we really rallied to the football and really gang tackled really well. You know, it was just a great performance. It's finally starting to see us really get over those growing pains that we had with some of the, the physical changes and young guys stepping up and we were just able to put a great night's football together. What's it like when you hit the point of trusting a quarterback and vice versa? You know, it's awesome to watch the growth.

36:19Obviously, you know, stepping into that role and in our type of offense is tough. But he's finally getting to the point now where we can put full 100% trust in him to run the offense and to make the adjustments and checks and things that we need done on that side of the football. He's really starting to articulate and pick up things and really reading the defense, you know, successfully and you can tell it's taken some pressure off of him. Now that he's finally fully understanding things and what what I'm wanting him to see, he's just able to go play free and play fast. How much does it change your strategy when you have a legit kicker like Cooper? You know, it really does. You know, we love to light up and kick some field goals and we need to, we really just need to share up our blocking up front for our PATs and our field goals. But, you know, having the opportunity to every time you kick off the ball, he puts the ball at the, you know, he put two of his kickoffs inside the five and one hit at the seven and rolled in, you know, in high school football, that's phenomenal. You know, it really makes the, the opposing

37:20offense really have to drive the field puts us in a great position for defense. So, you know, it's huge. Cooper has really, really worked his tail off to have that ability. I mean, he puts a lot of extra time in practicing his craft and he has really started to show this year of how strong his leg is. You know, he even hit a 52 yard field goal and practiced the other day and, you know, that's phenomenal. So we're hoping to have the ability at some point to really putting about there and use it as a weapon as well.
