At Afe Owe, he transformed his game over the final 11 games of 2025, and it's that transformation
1:14
the commanders are looking to pair with Dorante Jones' scheme, elevating the entire defensive
1:20
front in the process.
1:27
You are Lockdown Commanders, your daily podcasts on the Washington Commanders, part of the Lockdown

This is Lockdown Commanders, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, the number one sports podcast

network, and I'm David Harrison, your guy on the ground covering the Washington Commanders,
1:46
financial member of the media for WUSA9 and your host here with you five days a week
1:52
coming up on today's episode, Rashad White and Jerome Ford create necessary redundancy
1:57
to fix the commander's third down issues from 2025, and the cornerback doesn't necessarily
2:02
need to fit protocol, prototypical sizes with Dorante Jones.
2:07
But first, Leo Chanel and Chigacocco are the biggest bang for your buck free agent
2:11
signings of 2026, all of that coming up on today's episode of Lockdown Commanders, part
2:16
of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team, every day.
2:18
And it's all brought to you by Fandall, Fandall's giving you a way to turn college basketball
2:22
energy into even bigger potential wins with a college basketball parlay profit boost
2:27
head to fandall.com to get started, whether it's from his days playing tight end for the
2:32
burgundy and gold, his role as host of the Command Center podcast or his expert insight
2:37
on the drive to the draft podcast with Jason Johnson.
2:40
You know Logan Paulson, and if you know him, you'll love him and we're going to start
2:44
off our conversation with Logan today, asking Logan, who is your favorite free agent
2:48
addition this off season?
2:51
I mean, it's kind of like, you know, picking your own kid, like your favorite child a little
2:54
bit, because I think they all are good fits.
2:56
I think they all have good roles, and I think they're all good players.
2:59
And I think my favorite thing about pretty much all of them is that they all seem to
3:02
be kind of younger prospects who are trending upward, and I think are ready for larger roles.
3:06
So like, you know, the first one that comes to mind was the major signing, which is a
3:09
Daffa, and watching him with the chargers, especially the last, you know, what is that
3:13
11 games of the season, like he was really cooking, looking like a different player.
3:18
And not to say he was playing bad in Baltimore, but just kind of seem to be stepping into
3:21
his own there a little bit with a very high pressure rate, creating a lot of sacks, very
3:25
disruptive in the run game.
3:26
But I think people look at the price tag and say, well, he'd better be good because
3:30
they're paying him a lot of money.
3:31
So if you're looking for kind of the bargain bin, second tier guys, to me, it's between
3:34
Chica Conco and Leo Chanel, like those guys to me, I think are the, like, I don't
3:40
want to say perfect, kind of free agent signings for this team.
3:42
Like, Chig, like when you watch him in Tennessee, and I've said this a bunch of different places,
3:47
but I just love the competitor that he is, and I love the athletic skill set that he brings.
3:50
And I also think it's a really interesting kind of modern, you know, it gives you some
3:56
And what I mean by that is like when you look at like the LA Rams, for example, with all the
3:59
13 personnel, they're in this kind of sets the foundation for something along those lines.
4:03
And if you, if you wanted to, right, which is, which is pretty exciting.
4:06
And then Leo Chanel is again, and a guy who, I think the film's pretty good.
4:10
I think the role for him when he was in, he was in Kansas City with somewhat limited.
4:14
I think he's behind, you know, Milton and the other guy there, number 23, who's a pretty
4:18
good football player.
4:20
And I just think he's ready for more.
4:22
He's ready to kind of be blitzing more.
4:25
He's ready for more opportunities to attack line and scrimmage and use some of that
4:29
strike, use some of that athleticism.
4:31
So those two guys to me are like kind of the, maybe best bang for the buck free agent
4:37
You hit on a lot of things that I love about these signings as well.
4:39
I think Adafi, oh, way, really kind of helps to highlight the importance of coaching.
4:43
Not saying that the Ravens coaches last year were bad coaches per se, but like he just
4:48
seemed to fit better what they were trying to do in Los Angeles.
4:50
I think that's why you saw the spike in the expectation for that to transfer here to
4:54
Washington with Dorante Jones, certainly very exciting.
4:58
Leo Chanel is someone that I really wanted to ask you about because I feel like we know
5:03
what he does well from what we saw in Kansas City, but we also kind of don't know what
5:09
Dorante Jones's vision may be for because he's got some off-ball ability, some like inside
5:15
But like you said, like mug him up is great because you also play him off the edge.
5:18
You can move him around.
5:19
And a lot of people ask me and I honestly don't know right now, is he the Mike?
5:24
And to me, I think Leo Chanel is at his best when you can move him across the field.
5:28
But if he's left outside linebacker on this rep and he needs to communicate to whoever's
5:33
on the right side, it's going to complicate things.
5:35
So how do you feel like a guy like Leo Chanel's best use in any kind of defense, but especially
5:41
a more aggressive defense like we're expecting?
5:43
Yeah, I think that's a great question.
5:44
I think the thing that comes to my mind is like, you know, Dorante Jones and his press
5:48
are talked about flexibility and how important that was for his defensive philosophy.
5:52
And I feel like this player encapsulates that.
5:55
And so like when you look at the way they ran the Mike quote unquote or the player that's
5:59
listed as the Mike and Minnesota, like he lines up all over the place.
6:03
And I think you there are ways you can communicate that, you know, I'm saying you are there
6:07
are ways that if he's going to be your green dot, you can you like you can manage the communication
6:12
issues and shortcomings or whatever.
6:13
So I again, I agree with you.
6:15
I think he's best kind of lining up in multiple spots.
6:17
But I also think I'm excited to see him just kind of find a home a little bit like if you're
6:21
playing off ball linebacker, you're going to run this like double A mug or you're going
6:24
to run this like, you know, double A over the guard kind of looked at they've been running
6:29
a lot with Frankie and him like, I want to see him blitz like there are times like there's
6:33
a I think a play versus I think it's the chargers maybe where he's like running a loop and
6:37
gets his hands on the center's chest just kind of forklifts and back.
6:41
Like you don't see off ball linebackers play with that kind of strength.
6:44
So I want to see him in a round line of scrimmage.
6:47
I want to see him mixing it up.
6:48
I want to see him running pick games with Frankie, pick games with OA like I think you can
6:52
just bring a ton of flexibility with that kind of body type and then the other thing that
6:55
I think people are sleeping on is he played quite a bit in space.
6:59
You know, not as like a nickel, but like they played base defense and he would walk out
7:02
over the slot is a great interception versus Andrews and Baltimore earlier in the season.
7:08
So yeah, man, I think there's there's a lot of untapped potential there and I think
7:11
a big reason for it is because again, he just was playing behind two guys that kind of
7:15
entrenched themselves as the starters there are embedded themselves as the starters.
7:19
So I'm really excited for him and I don't think his versatility precludes him from being
7:24
the Mike necessarily.
7:26
And I think a lot of people in Kansas City also talk to me about how they're like if you
7:29
want to know how athletic this dude is they used him to spy Lamar Jackson.
7:32
So there's an explanation of that.
7:34
So the versatility is off the charts.
7:36
I want to ask you about the cornerback position and I am in the group where I'm like I'm
7:41
a little bit surprised that we don't have more out there about and it doesn't mean that
7:45
But we don't have more out there about having Peters, targeting a little bit of length
7:48
in free agency, guys like Jalen Watson.
7:51
You bring in Amy Robertson.
7:52
I love Amy Robertson just from what I know about him already.
7:55
But the surprise that is left over which shouldn't take away from a meet in my opinion
7:59
is that lack of length that they, you know, that Adam Peters presumably didn't go after
8:04
We don't know everything that happened behind the closed doors anyway.
8:07
But were you surprised at all that, you know, Amy Robertson, another sub six foot corner
8:11
is brought in and there's not more smoke around AP going after longer corners in free
8:17
I mean, a little bit, but I think it's also you got to think about like what this defense
8:21
is and what it does.
8:22
And so that's where like when you take a step back, again, initially because you're like,
8:25
oh, Dan Quinn, long corners, long corners, they play like look at every draft conversation
8:30
they're talking about corners with long arms, which is appropriate and important, but
8:33
like when you look at this defense specifically, I think the thing that comes to the forefront
8:38
is the way, if you're going to run it the way that they ran it with, that Flores ran
8:42
it in Minnesota, it really, the one position that delivers is the most is cornerback, right?
8:47
It lets you play in these off looks with eyes to the quarterback.
8:50
So I want guys that have great clicking clothes are instinctive to the football.
8:54
I think about Mikey on the perimeter.
8:56
I think about Roberts Robertson, right, as I say, as I'm, yeah.
9:00
So him on the perimeter, again, like that's like his superpower, like these hyperquick sudden
9:05
drive on things with vision of the quarterback, looking through the receiver to the ball,
9:09
like that's what he's good at.
9:10
So to me, and again, like Trey Amos, same thing, like that's what they're good at.
9:14
So to me, like maybe we're thinking about body type as opposed to skill set, because I
9:19
think all three of these guys that are on the roster currently have this skill set of
9:23
like we can be an off coverage, off man, off zone, off quarters, whatever it is, eyes through
9:28
the receiver to the quarterback and play the football.
9:31
And I think that's the thing that sticks out to me as to why he's here, in addition
9:35
to the stuff you alluded to, like the, the really dynamic, aggressive personality, that
9:41
like the competitive personality, which they've always valued here in the front office.
9:45
I think it's a great point.
9:46
And Mika actually talked about that and his introductory press conference with us said,
9:49
you know, he's been short his whole life.
9:50
So he knows how to operate that way.
9:51
It's not going to be a surprise to him when he gets on the field and he's shorter than
9:54
a lot of these guys, but it's also helped him, right?
9:56
It helps him be a little bit quicker, be a little bit faster to the ball.
9:59
So I think that's a, that's a great point there.
10:01
I will say I will out myself as well.
10:02
I just recently dropped my, this week's mock drive Monday and I passed up the Angel of
10:07
Ponds, the corner back out of Indiana and went with Chris Johnson out of San Diego State.
10:11
I think they're both really good prospects.
10:13
I'm not going to lie.
10:14
Like one of the, one of the tipping points for me was the fact that Ponds is also five
10:18
I'm like, I don't know if I want three, five foot nine, five foot eight dudes in this
10:22
defense, even though I do, obviously, see where you're coming from and agree with you
10:25
Because no, he's not to that.
10:27
I mean, Dave, I did the same thing with just the traits.
10:29
We just had to do our, you know, I just had to do my draft, my top 10 DVs and you better
10:34
believe Johnson is ahead of Ponds for me and I have no other reason other than he's taller.
10:39
Like they're both good football player.
10:41
So again, it infects every element of analysis for sure.
10:44
More to come with Logan Paulson talking, often talking, defense talking, free agent additions
10:49
and a little bit of critique from him on my most recent mock draft.

13:28
Moving over to the offensive side of things, Logan, you mentioned Chig and Chig was one
13:32
of my favorite free agent targets coming into this whole thing.
13:36
I got a lot of paths on the back from my listeners, which I always appreciate, but to be
13:40
fair, a lot of people were on Chig, right?
13:42
It's not like I went and found this diamond in the rough.
13:45
This is a diamond in the front row of the case.
13:46
We all wanted them.
13:48
Well, you just said something that really supported something I've been saying as well.
13:51
Chig doesn't bury Ben Sinett for me.
13:55
From what you said, I believe you agree, so I'd like to kind of dive a little bit deeper
13:59
Yeah, I mean, I do think the roles are different.
14:01
So I think one of the things, like you think about Bates and Sinett, and I'm going to kind
14:04
of like, it's kind of like this weird evolutionary chart.
14:07
It goes like, you know, Bates who's like this, like lumbering, you know, monster of a man
14:12
to a little bit more live Ben Sinett who's a little bit more explosive all the way to Chig
14:16
who's kind of this, you know, the perfect evolution of the past catching tight end, right?
14:21
And so I do think if you look at roles and utilizations for those three guys, because
14:25
of where they are in terms of body type and skill set, they're going to be used differently.
14:29
Like I think about John Bates in line, getting open on keepers, boots, play actions, kind
14:33
of like these little like heavy outside zone fakes.
14:36
Think about like the Patriot with Rob Gronkowski, where he's like working up the seam.
14:40
They lose them because everyone step into the run.
14:42
Ben Sinett, I think, can be your move kind of, hey, we're sifting across the formation
14:46
we're inserting and runs.
14:48
And I have enough vertical juice again to capitalize as like, hey, on this insert, I'm going
14:52
to bluff and now I'm running a corner.
14:54
And so like getting into some more diverse stuff and then Chig is kind of the guy that
14:57
has a, the closest thing in the room to a receiver skill set where it's like, hey, we
15:02
can have, you know, John do his thing, Ben's doing his thing and then Chig can actually
15:07
play like a pseudo Z pseudo X receiver at times, formationally where we can have him run
15:14
We can have him run a post.
15:15
We can have him run an isolation slant because of the raw horsepower and the lower half.
15:20
Now, they got a, he's got to get here, you got to see if that plays, but that's kind
15:23
of the way I would envision that 13 personnel, a great roadmap for that is the LA Rams, kind
15:28
of with how they use Terrence Ferguson where he's like, he becomes kind of pseudo receiver
15:32
ish because the matchup he's able to draw on 13 personnel.
15:36
So I think that's what I would look at here.
15:37
And again, like they don't, if you do it right, they don't have to infringe on each other
15:41
because they each have their own unique individual kind of benefits at the position.
15:47
The way I've been putting is it further weaponizes the tight end position.
15:51
That's just kind of the way I see Chig's addition here.
15:53
I do want to ask you this as well.
15:56
He kind of mentioned this and clearly Chig has no problem outing himself as a player who
16:01
definitely reads his press.
16:02
He talked about how there have been narratives built about him that he can't block.
16:05
There have been narratives about him that he doesn't run routes cleanly and it's actually
16:09
kind of ironic because our locked on Titan's host asked him to send me a video about what
16:12
the committee is getting in Chig and he absolutely says in the video, Chig can't block.
16:17
And Chig doesn't run clean routes.
16:18
I'm like, well, at least he knows the narratives that are out there about him from what you
16:23
And I know obviously we get to see him in person, but from what you've seen, do you believe
16:26
the narratives or do you think Chig is is going to prove some narratives wrong out here?
16:31
The thing that again, you go for the athlete with Chig, right?
16:35
The thing that kept me watching play after play after play with him is how aggressive
16:40
he was in the run game.
16:41
And like, so again, people saying, oh, you can't block like an important part of run
16:46
blocking is matchup.
16:48
But when you're looking at like the fundamentals of blocking, like hand placement, hat placement,
16:53
footwork, Chig's pretty good in these areas.
16:55
And if you get him in a favorable matchup, so like there's a game was Jacksonville, right?
17:00
Which is like their second last game of the year last year, where he's blocking kind
17:03
of like they basically took their Sam linebacker and put him on the ball.
17:06
So kind of like your Jordan McGee for that defense.
17:09
And Chig absolutely wore that guy out, right?
17:13
He just was like, hey, hands in tight, there's a back running nose back.
17:17
He's pushing him in the pile.
17:18
He's kind of shoved him down the ground.
17:19
Like, so again, if you want to block defensive ends, yeah, it's not going to be good.
17:23
There's only a handful of guys in the league, John Beds being one of them that most teams
17:27
feel comfortable with that role for a blocking wide.
17:30
Chig, you got to think matchups.
17:31
I can block safeties.
17:32
I can block corners.
17:33
I can block linebackers.
17:34
I can crack defensive ends, but if we're drive blocking an end, that's not my skill set.
17:38
But I think he'll want to the physicality.
17:41
The mindset is there like, I love it, man, when I see him like on a pin pull, like they
17:45
pin the defensive end, he's pulling the perimeter and he is looking to jack up a corner.
17:50
Like he's got the right kind of mentality.
17:52
So I'm 100% for that with regards to the route running.
17:55
Yes, it doesn't look like Zach Erts necessarily where Zach's like hyper technical, the stems
18:00
are perfect, the double stick euro at the top is perfect.
18:04
That's not his game.
18:05
He's going to win with just raw free course power.
18:08
Like that's his thing.
18:10
And so like when you're talking about tight end specifically or even receivers, like there's
18:13
no perfect model for how to win, right?
18:17
There are certain things you want to see, but Chig has kind of adapted his game to be like
18:22
I'm a freak athlete.
18:23
I'm going to win my freak athleticism, and that's okay as long as you continue to grow
18:28
So I think like that's what I'd say.
18:29
Is he the most refined route runner?
18:30
No, but that's cool because he can win, right?
18:33
Is he the best blocker of defensive ends?
18:35
No, but he can do these other things.
18:36
So I don't look at what he can't do, I look at what he can do and the mindset.
18:41
The competitive mindset he brings is really outstanding.
18:44
Yeah, I mean, I think context absolutely has to matter.
18:47
I was just watching a little bit of carnaltate and I say a little bit because I'm definitely
18:51
just scratching the surface on like I'm a black eye fan.
18:53
So I watched a lot of carnaltate, right?
18:56
Study a lot of carnaltate, right?
18:57
I was watching a little bit.
18:58
And I watched a rep where he's pulling from the left side.
19:02
But as the ball snap, he's going, it's a run play, it's a zone run play.
19:05
The corner on that side is kind of like, I'm like, I'm not in this.
19:08
Like, I don't want to be part of the carnaltate says, nobody, you're going to be a part of
19:12
this, whether you want to be or not, absolutely attacks the dude.
19:15
So yeah, I mean, the matchups matter, you said the spirit of it matters, the intensity
19:20
I like everything that chick has to bring to the table.
19:22
So I'm not worried about it.
19:24
Rashad White and Jerome Ford are very interesting to me.
19:27
And then, of course, today as we're recording this, we also get confirmation that Jeremy
19:30
and the Knickles is coming back.
19:33
Ford and the Knickles are not officially signed yet.
19:35
Rashad is officially signed yet, but all of them are confirmed to be joining the team.
19:39
Four backs now are going to be under contract once these deals get done.
19:43
Started off with one, right?
19:44
And then everybody wanting Kenneth Walker, which I'll be honest with you, like just for
19:47
what the commuters needed in the backfield, I've been saying, I thought Kenneth Walker
19:51
did what they already have better, but didn't add what they needed to add is kind of the
19:57
On there are some other candidates out there.
19:59
Obviously, Rashad has a relationship with Jayden, but just what do you think about the
20:02
team and what they're doing here?
20:03
Because you got three backs now added to Bill who have proven third down ability.
20:07
And obviously that was a focal point.
20:09
Yeah, no, I think, and again, like, Bill's done a great job.
20:13
And I think he's going to continue to grow.
20:15
It was kind of this explosive back, but getting some experience there specifically for
20:19
the third down stuff is going to be huge.
20:21
And I also think like about the run game in both in Detroit, obviously, that David
20:26
Blau was going to be kind of pulling from obviously, she shades of that with the bearers
20:32
But like, if you get a back that's going to be good and decisive downhill, you're going
20:38
So you've got three, four guys really that can do that.
20:41
And obviously everyone's like, oh, we need Jamir Gibbs and again, everybody in their mom
20:44
wants Jamir Gibbs, right?
20:45
He's one of the best running backs in the NFL for a reason, right?
20:48
So like, yeah, I have one that guy and I want to be John Robinson to and maybe Christian
20:53
But for what this offense is right now, right?
20:56
Like, we're okay, we can start a football game tomorrow.
20:59
So what I would look at is in the draft though, like, can you get a little bit more dynamic
21:05
Because white is a perfect like singles runner, right?
21:09
He's going to get exactly what it's blocked for.
21:10
He can catch the football.
21:11
He's a good pass protector.
21:13
I look at Jerome Ford.
21:14
He's got maybe a little bit more juice, but very, very similar mold and we all know what
21:17
McNichols is, right?
21:18
Kind of three guys of the same cut.
21:21
So if you are in the draft and you're sitting there at 71 or sitting there at, what is it?
21:25
156, whatever the next pick is in the fifth round.
21:28
And you know, Mike White or Mike Washington from Arkansas, a staring in the face, like,
21:34
He runs a four three is a big body guy, like get downhill, like just add a little bit
21:38
more juice to the offense.
21:40
I think that's definitely still in the table for this group.
21:46
I've kind of used the word redundancy with Rashad White Jerome Ford.
21:48
He made a little bit Jeremy McNichols and a lot of people will take that as a negative.
21:51
It's not necessarily negative.
21:52
You're getting a lot of guys that bring what you need to bring to the group.
21:55
They're all on one year deal.
21:56
So you kind of figure out who's the best of the group.
21:58
Do we want to move forward with them when the time comes?
22:00
So we're done and see not necessarily a bad thing.
22:03
Logan, last question for you.
22:04
I want to put you on a spot that I was just on again, mock drive Monday.
22:07
We love mock dress because we're never ripe.
22:09
But we're always right.
22:10
I was left with Montsort de Lame and sort of Lane corner back at LSU as you know, and
22:15
Carnell Tate, White receiver out of Ohio State.
22:17
I went with Carnell Tate in that situation based off what the commander has already done.
22:23
What I see that they need, did I go the right direction?
22:25
Or do you think I should have gone with the lane?
22:27
I'm not telling you who else is left on the board either because that's always a conversation.
22:30
I will show you downs, reach styles and love.
22:36
Yeah, that's a really, I love this question because I think like I have like a,
22:41
I have a very high confidence in both those football players.
22:44
I think they're just kind of outside of the top of this draft class.
22:48
And like, so I kind of tear my process, right?
22:51
Where there's like, hey, these four dudes are the blue chip guys that I would draft,
22:55
kind of no matter where I was picking, right?
22:57
And then you get into that second tier, which is like, you know, player five to player.
23:01
In this case, I haven't finished yet, but let's say 17 or 18, right?
23:05
And they kind of fall in that second tier.
23:07
And so to me, I think it just comes down to like, honestly, this is going to sound insane,
23:11
but which person you like more, right?
23:14
Because I think Mansort de Lame has great ball skills.
23:16
He's got great feet.
23:16
He's got great instincts.
23:18
Wonder about the athlete a little bit.
23:19
And I think for Colonel Tate, like there's not a lot of questions about him.
23:22
He's a young prospect.
23:24
So I don't think you go wrong either way.
23:25
I think as of right this second, I'd probably feel slightly more comfortable with the receiver
23:30
just because of the dynamics of the Washington commanders, Terry's contracts expiring.
23:34
They got a bunch of one year deals in that room, just having somebody to kind of build around.
23:38
But if you said, hey, man, we dropped to Mansort de Lame.
23:40
Like I would be doing backflips because I think he's a heck of a football player.
23:44
He's aggressive, got great ball instincts, great and off coverage as well.
23:47
Like kind of the thing we were talking about earlier.
23:49
So I don't think there's a wrong answer.
23:51
I would just say ever so slightly because of the current roster construction for the Washington
23:55
commanders, I go Colonel Tate as well.
23:58
And that's kind of how I sold it.
23:59
So you get you get a Z for today and you get an X for the future.
24:02
They look at you with all your little like cool little one-on-one liner quips over there.
