Why Max Christie Is the Overwhelming Fan Choice to Start Next to Kyrie Irving

About this episode

Locked On Mavericks - Daily Podcast On The Dallas Mavs is made possible by:

The Dallas Mavericks starting lineup is still very much up in the air, and Mavs fans have strong opinions on who should join Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg on the floor. Would trading Kyrie Irving for more draft assets actually speed up Dallas' rebuild around Cooper Flagg, or is that a mistake the Mavericks and the NBA world would regret?

Nick Angstadt (@NickVanExit), Isaac Harris (@IsaacLHarris), & Slightly Biased (Slightly Biased) break down the latest Locked On Mavs fan survey, covering the Mavericks' starting five, Naji Marshall's contract extension, and reaction to the team's ninth overall pick. They dig into where Max Christie, Daniel Gafford, PJ Washington, and Dereck Lively II fit into head coach Dusty May and GM Mike Schmitz's plans for the roster. Sergio De Larrea and Marcus Sasser also come up as the crew debates who can create offense beyond Dallas' two stars this season.

So we have baseball practice tonight from a son and it's coach pitch. And I watched the coach beam a kid. Burpest? No, it wasn't on purpose. I was just like, I mean, I kind of felt bad for the kid.

It was a practice and everything, but he was hitting all over the plate. And I was like, do I step in? You know, like, do I be that parent? And then he beamed a kid and I was like, oh, crap. And so anyway, some shout out to the coaches out there. And the post game prodigy. What'd you see from the Dallas-Movic tonight, so I'd be biased? We are like a month and a half away. We're getting there, boys. We're excited. We're getting there. We're getting there. Getting the media day, getting to training camp, getting to a 5am start of a preseason game. It's like you're going to be streaming during that game, right? No. Yeah, you are. Yes, you are. I didn't even realize that. I think I'm going to just for the fun of it. I'd love to go. The one in China, right? Yeah. We should go. Let's do it. Slightly travels. OK. Can you trip a bit, Macau? Today's episode, we're going to be responding to more of these survey results from what you guys sent us in the answers to the thoughts about the Dallas-Movic.

So I didn't have enough play make around Kyrie and Cooper. I just wanted to have trade Kyrie for more assets. What do you think of Nasi Marshall's extension? The maverick make the right pick at pick nine. And the majority of you think, no, the maverick made the wrong pick at pick nine. We'll get into that a little bit later. But let's start with this one. The first one is who should be in the starting lineup? And I think we can all kind of agree and I guess correct me if I'm wrong. Kyrie, Cooper and PJ are probably the three of the three starters you can probably lock in for this Maverick's team. Are you asking what it's going to be or what it should be? What it's going to be? I guess it said who should start as the question. Here's I think I don't think you can say all three of those locks. I think the only lock see you can do hands down is Cooper and Kyrie. Cooper and Kyrie are the only again in terms of who should start. There should be three. It's Cooper, Kyrie and Derek Lively are the three who should start if they're all healthy. Yeah, that'd be a should.

Yes. That'd be a should. I'm not penciling in Derek Lively just yet. I need to see him jump up and down. Yeah, I guess that's true. And Derek Lively's healthy, he's starting for me. I don't agree. I don't even care if he can jump or not. We don't even know like that's the thing. Like we don't we don't know Derek Lively's. I mean, dark didn't jump for like 10 years, right? True. He started. He did. He did. Okay, but our question though to everyone was if Kyrie, Cooper and PJ are starters, we wanted to just kind of like narrow it down. All right, let's narrow down to one other like wing guard type spot. Who is the other non big you would start? And it was I was a little surprised with the results. 61 and a half percent said Max Christie should start next to Kyrie Cooper PJ and then a center. 20% said Zachary Reese's Shay 16% said Najm Marshall and then this little 2% said other on that. Max Christie has not got a lot of talk over the over the offseason, I think. He did get some talk when he came in and came to some press and stuff and he was extremely

tan. That's probably the only thing we've really talked about him. So much about this season. But what is it about Max Christie Isaac do you think has mass fans like so overwhelmingly saying he should start? Well, I think I think he's a little bit more known. You know, Reese's Shay is kind of more of the unknown. You know, you get Max over in the Luca trade. He shoots 40% from three last year around six threes a game. He's still at 23 22 somewhere through there. And I think he just naturally fits into the old school positions of a shooting guard. You know, if Kyrie is your point guard and Cooper's on the wing, then Max is your like a prototypical type of two guard that you'd have out there. And the only thing with like Max is going to shoot the lights out like that. That's fine. The only thing with Max is can he give you the point of attack defense that you need from that spot because you can't ask that from Kyrie right now. And that's that's what they got to figure out.

So yeah, I wasn't maybe a little bit of like the percentage, but I would expect most people would lean Max Christie right now. Yeah. Um, this is this is the most glaring weakness on the team right now is who's going to fill out this second spot. And I don't know what the, I don't know what the right answer is. I guess it is Max Christie, but it's a little for a team that wants to be in the playoff one. I think it's a little underwhelming truthfully. I'm surprised. I'm actually surprised it's not higher. I don't think Reese's Shay has any real argument, uh, at least in my opinion of being a starter right now. Yeah, it'd be, it'd be hoping, right? Like there just be hope for Reese's. Yeah, there's a starter over. He's not been a starting caliber player at any point in his career thus far. Um, so you do have a Reese's Shay. Oh, that's good. I'm just like, I don't know. It was like 30% of people voted for him. Like he hasn't been a starting level player at any point in his career. So yeah, but it could work for us. Yeah, true. Good. Maybe, maybe a year or two, like that would be nice. But Max Christie, like, like you, this, this group is going to need shooting.

So Max Christie was 40% last year. It's just the obvious one. I love Najee, but Najee's probably the best, Najee's the best player out of that trio, but his fit is, doesn't, his fit is better off the bench. Yeah, just, I think it's just exemplifies the need for shooting in that group, especially. Yeah. The shooting part, hoping Cooper gets better. Hope that PJ bounces back, but those are two hopes. The center, none of the centers unless they start Aldama, which, uh, I thought Eddie said, co, well, Maz.com say, here's the depth chart for the Mavericks. And he had Sanjee Aldama's starting center. So I was like, oh, starting to sit or haven't thought about that one yet. Uh, that ain't happened. I, you know, it's interesting. When Cooper was in on that list, what if Cooper's the starting to, well, we said who start, who starts with Kyrie Cooper and PJ? So who would they start next to one of those guys? But bear with it. Could, could you go, Santi and then it's just Kyrie huge. Yeah.

Yeah. I mean, that's what Dusty made in. That's, that's what, what, that's what kid did to start the last season. Well, I think that, I think that's the thing of, I think we all have to go in with like an open mind of besides Kyrie and Cooper, we just don't know what Dusty May is going to do. That's what's part of like, I think it's kind of fun with it of going into camp. It, you know, I just wouldn't be shocked if there's some like crazy lineup that coming out of camp or a first preseason game there in China. And it's like, Oh crap, Bebear Vitch and Aldama starting. What the, what, and we just don't know. Like, you know, OMAX started two games in the preseason or we just don't know what Dusty May and Mike Schmitts and them are going into it. What if they did trade for Risha Shay and they built in Mike Schmitts is like, dude, this dude is legit. It get him in a different system. He is our two guard. We just don't know, right? Like we don't know how camp is going to be. I think there's genuinely going to be some like battles and training camp for who's going to get some of these spots in the rotation.

And the thing, the other thing with Max that we started off the beginning of this offseason talking about that still hasn't happened is like an extension and it like it could happen any day. But like we haven't seen any reporting anything about this Max Christie extension because going into this year, he's going to make $8.2 million and then he has a player option after that. So they're in the extension, you know, timeline for him. If they want to or they just, Hey, we're going to play this out and see how you play. And the coach specifically mentioned him by name and said he's going to have a breakout season this year. So the coach mentioning you is probably a good sign in this. That is good. In this regard too. The other question on the starting lineup that we got was if Derek Lava can't start the season, which kind of I kind of alluded to earlier, who should start for him? Slightly, what do you think the, what do you think the response was? Gafford or Morris Johnson, Jr. We put just two options there for you. How much do you think Gafford want to buy? My guess to be Gafford 80% Gafford 70% more as 29 almost 30% on more as Johnson, Jr.

Isaac, you're you're the the the in house more as like enthusiast. Why the almost 30% think that he should start at center? Why is it too low or too high? Oh, which router are you going with this? I think it's high because slightly thought that it was supposed to be 80 and I thought it would be a lot higher too. Oh, you thought more as you thought 30 is pretty high for for res. Yeah. I think that I think the selling point would be, hey, you took a top 10 dude and you won 26 games last year. You start the top 10 guy, you know, because like how many of these other guys that were selected in the top 10 are just go through them. How many of them are not starting? I mean, flimmings is probably not starting. Akef starting, Wogler starting. I mean, just go down the line. So if you look at it and you're like, all right, well, how much do you believe in res? Do you think he's like a, you know, like a long term project type of guy? Or if you think he's a win now guy and Dusty May is like, dude, this dude, we have res.

They don't and we believe in him. Like we love him and we want him playing. If one of your goals going into next season is we want as many minutes with res and Cooper together as possible, then you go into with res as you're starting five or you're starting forward and say, I mean, heck, would you be shocked if it's res and Aldama starting next to Cooper, PJ and Kyrie is lively healthy or we're still going. I'm like assuming like, I'm assuming the livest like ramping. PJs coming off the bench. Gap. No, I said, I said PJ Cooper and Kyrie with res and Aldama. Like would you be shocked? Like slightly, they just go huge line up. I don't think I would, I don't think I'd be shocked. I'd be kind of like, I'd be pretty shocked. I'd be like, oh, okay, all right, let's do this. Like I think I would be a little excited by an opening night. I just don't, I don't, there's it would take a lot for me to be there's a collection of those guys in which I wouldn't be shocked. If you told me the bear of it started on night one, I think I would be, I think I would be

surprised by that. But there is a, I think there's a group of like eight dudes that I'm like, I wouldn't be shocked if any of these dudes started and res as part of them. It's a big mystery. This starting lineup. We'll see what happens. I think, I think by the time opening night comes, we'll have a lot more answers because we'll have had media day. We'll have had multiple practices of training camp. We'll have had multiple preseason games. We'll get an idea of what we think that these, you know, the coaching staff thinks about these guys. But for now, we're just guessing just like just like everybody else. And it seems like 61% think that Max will start. And if lively doesn't start 70% think that Gafford will start at the center. So I guess we should have put saunti in there as one of the options. Coming up, do the maps have enough playmaking outside of Kyrie and Cooper? 88% say no, I agree. Talk about that more. Fidelity brokerage services LLC member NYS CSIPC. Gentlemen, we've been doing this fan survey. We've got a lot of results and a lot of answers. This one did not surprise me at all. Do the Mavericks have enough playmaking outside of Kyrie and Cooper? 88% said no. 12% said yes. I'm trying to understand the 12% that say yes on this one. Because it just makes sense to me that you look at, we asked all offseason, where is the extra playmaking come from? Kyrie has historically been very good as a, you know, secondary type. Like, you know, ball handler, like player, like, you know, a creator. He's been great next to Luca, great next to LeBron.

Now he can be very good as, you know, the primary creator and all that. Obviously, one of the best dribblers of all time. But Cooper flag, Kyrie, and then who else is creating stuff for this team and making plays. And I think that's kind of the question we run into is like, all right, let's say Kyrie misses some time. This is back to last season's guard rotation almost seems like slightly. Yeah, I mean, obviously, if you look at it through the lens of contending in the modern NBA, they don't, they're probably four or five guys short. But yeah, four or five, okay, four or five does seem like a lot though. Like do you, do you consider us? And if we're talking contention, I don't know what Nogyna, I don't know Nogyna play offs yet. Yeah, is that fair to say? I'm with you on that because he's, he's the shooting it will, the shooting is the question, Mark there. Mm-hmm. But you look at, you look at all of the best teams in the league and they have five guys on the

court at any given time who can dribble at the very least and pass or get to the rim, like the best teams. I'm talking about the best of the best, right? The Mavericks are, you always want to win, but the Mavericks are going to be that this year. They're not going to be the best teams. They're better than they were a year ago in that regard, but they're still, they're still a handful of guys away, I would say, that you hope that, hey, can Marcus Sassar or one of these like stabs we took be somebody? And if that answer is yes, well, then you, the, the amount of guys you need has shrunk. So yeah, no, they definitely don't have enough when comparing them to the top in teams in the league. Then, then let's take, then let's move the goalposts a little bit. Do they have enough to make the play in? Oh, yeah, yeah. Which I think we would all kind of, if they made the play in and then won the play in and made the playoff, so I think we would all be like, oh, yeah, that's a good season. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. So they have enough to get to where we would be like, satisfying result. Yeah.

Yeah. What's the percentage of people who said that they do have enough? 12. 12%. Yeah. So if you're in the 12%, then you have some really high hopes for Sergio Sassar or Nasi or a collection of those three guys. Because it ultimately comes down because the question is outside of Kyrie and Cooper, Kyrie is obviously the biggest answer to that, the biggest difference between last year. But that's another thing we have to figure out is, what do they feel about Sassar? How confident are they in Sergio in year one? And I feel the most confident in an opinion about Nasi that I think they view him as like a point forward that's going to do some setting up of the offense some in the second unit. But so ultimately, I think maybe you say it comes down to like Sassar and Sergio. Like, how do they? Is this or is the lack of like going out and pursuing another trade? Does that show you how much confidence that they have in Sergio and Sassar?

My question to the 12% would be, was there a question on this survey you said no to? Wait, well, let's go back to the first question. Where were the maps finished in 2026, 27? One, there's only only one percent said top four. So really that's kind of surprising actually. Yeah, we got realistic. The raccoons got our realistic. Okay. The last question. Now, 23% said said five through six. So that means that what is it? 24% almost 25% said they'll finish on the top six of the West. So maybe this is where that group is hanging out. I actually think that's, is there a 25% chance to have to make the playoffs? I think that's actually kind of fair. Yeah, but they can make it at seven or eight, too. This was yeah, what's the percentage though for the play in though? Play in was almost 70%. 68.7% said them. Yes, yeah, in between seven and eight. They're seven and ten. I think that's pretty realistic. Yeah, oh, yeah. I think I think we all agree on that.

But we don't think they have enough playmaking to be better than that. And that's kind of one of the things that we're stuck at with this team. Again, unless, like I said, Sergio De LaRera becomes something real right away. Marcus Sasser is just this, Jalen Brunson-esque guard that's been underutilized on a different team is going to come and blossom in some way. Maybe not blossom to the point three takes over a major metropolitan area as they're as their crowned king and then host SNL, but maybe to a different lower degree. I've got I've come around to being pretty high on Sasser actually. At the very least, like him being my favorite upset, like bet that they took outside the draft in this offseason. Just because I like I like the shooting and there's some interesting rim numbers with him where it's all right, maybe he was a little underutilized. It's just weird though that the pistons just needed that skill set so badly. And just year after year just did not go to him. Well, he had a hip, he had a hip problem last year that kind of derailed the season.

Hips don't die. I agree though. I mean, there's a reason you got him for free. Yeah, but it is interesting though that he has like the one underutilized bet on another team. I guess Reese's Chase kind of the same thing, but right, like a super underutilized where the team didn't like completely give up on him yet. All right, I guess there's a scenario in which you, yeah, you could ask the question of like, what if Sergio's like first team all NBA? I mean, first team. That would be something. Not that first look at comparisons would come back in a big way. If he would be really upset. I'm not that first ball NBA. We're not we're not. If he was first, first ball NBA his first season would be insane. Move over SGA. I mean, I mean, this is even crazy too, but like, what if he's first team all rookie? That's what I meant. Yeah. Like, I mean, that that would be crazy. But like, what would that do for like the Mavericks projections and stuff? If you if you told me right now, Sergio is going to be first team all rookie. And you're like crap. Thanks. It's sad that I only see that scenario of Kyrie misses like the majority of the season.

Yeah, I haven't even I have I don't know how much for even get a sea of Sergio. Because I watched some of the Feeba games and he just didn't look like. I get to be ready to be honest with you. I know that's but that's why I don't know like I don't know. Is Sergio going to come in and just like get some random spot minutes and it's more of like a development thing or is he going to come in and like, oh no, he's our backup point guard. He's one of the main guards like coming off the bench. I don't know. I just I don't know how they view that. Those Feeba games can be weird though. We're like sometimes you're like, oh, this guy doesn't look like he belongs at all. And then like, Ronda Hollis Jefferson is doing Kobe Bryant moves in your life. Right. Didn't work in the end. He had all like, wait, what's happening? It's like only and then and being takes it to Yoke it's and you're like, wait, what the heck? Taylor Schroeder. Yeah, Taylor Schroeder becomes the best player in the world every time he plays on that. Yeah, he does. Coming up, did the maps do right with the timeline? What do you think about Najemarsson's extension?

And the majority of you think they made the wrong pick at nine. I'll talk about that in more coming up. The problem of finding clothes that you can live it all day, be comfortable and do whatever you need to do. Whether it's just chilling, go in the meetings, playing golf, being on the move. All right, so we're talking about the Mavs fan survey that we put out. A bunch of you responded to it and we've got some answers here. Should the Mavericks trade Kyrie Irving for assets to fit Cooper Flag's quote timeline? I'm quote, first of all, Isaac, I want to know why you put the timeline in quotes. I just, because I hate the, I don't know, I just hate timeline talk so much. And I think he gets overblown so much. So I was just kind of, it's kind of like a shot at the whole conversation of like,

Oh, time button. You're cool. Okay. And let's, let's talk about the timeline. 68.7% said no, so basically they should keep Kyrie. And 31% said yes, they should trade Kyrie to fit Cooper Flag's timeline, which I found interesting. That's a pretty big percentage because we've been, I mean, on this show, you've just been hammering that you don't trade Kyrie unless he wants to get traded thing. And we were worried that we were going to skew some of these answers on here, but there's still a big percentage. They're like, no, no, they should just trade Kyrie right now because they need to fit Cooper Flag's timeline. I think it more so has to do with the lack of assets, maybe. Yeah, it's more, it's just more of a, hey, let's, let's get more picks or whatever, so we can fully retool around Cooper and Cooper himself. Yeah, I go back, well, yeah, I go back to the conversation when Nick was out gallivanting the whole world in Switzerland, you know, had Bob Sturmman from the ticket.

And, you know, Bob was leaning into a little bit more than, you know, than we do because I'm like all team like, hey, keep Kyrie as long as he wants to be here. And Bob was like leaning more towards like, hey, this is their chance. This is their chance to get assets. This is their chance to like get some picks and stuff to really help the Cooper rebuild. And I think his point was this kind of like, you know, Kyrie's not going to be around for majority of like Cooper's like career. So, so like if you can get either any rest of these guys get really good value right now. And that hurt my soul, Bob. So, so I think that's where the 31% comes in if they try to probably take their heart out of it. And it's like, all right, well, Cooper's what 19. And if if a team, you know, comes out and is like, we don't know what the value for Kyrie Irving would be if they entertained it to deadline. That's my that's my point. We don't know what his value is going to be at the deadline yet. I know what his value probably is right now. And I don't think that would be worth the assets that they would get to get to get to know what his right now.

I mean, it's probably not it's probably not satisfactory to what we would want if we were going to trade in. Like, that my whole point this whole office has been he's worth more to the mavericks right now than whatever assets they would get right now. And I think I think though if he proves he can stay on the floor and he proves that he's just as good as we think he's all going to be. And he could be worth those assets by the trade deadline. And then I'd be in favor of trading him at that point. I mean, Lamello just went for one unprotected pick and then three swaps. And I was reading and like Lamello is a young, you know, should have been an all NBA player season ago. So they had seen his interior decorating. True, you know, true. It is an entry risk 24 or 5 however old Lamello is still to pair alongside Anthony Edwards. And that was the market for him. So a 34 year old. Yeah, that I mean, that is three swaps though. And a first like, right. But I'm saying Kyrie's trade value will be lower than that. Right. This second. Yeah, right. Yeah.

So if they if they can get higher by the time the trade deadline comes, then so if it was if it was unprotected first from Houston and a swap with with Vanvley and Reach Eppard. I think though, I think that's the type of deal they think I'd have to have a medium about that. Silly, hard to name Reach Eppard. I was like, I'm in I'm in I'm in I'm out. I just think that if if they do entertain it at the trade deadline, that that's the type of thing that they'll be going for is like, hey, give us a two whoever it is. We want a couple picks. We want a young player and we got to match some salaries. And we're not taking on some like long term salary type of thing. And that that's where yeah, comes in play. Team standing in the like the national anthem line would look so funny. It just be like this giant team and then like Reach Eppard, Fred, Matt Wheaton, Sasser, at the end. Reed does not fit what they're trying to go for with positional size.

Naju Marshall does fit the positional size thing. What do you think of Naju Marshall's extension was a question that we put out way poised out there. And 50 over 50% said it's a good contract straight up. 43% said, eh, it's okay. And then a 6% said it's a bad contract. So only like 94% think that it's at least okay to good of a contract. All right. So I voted him this poll. I vote I did the survey. You're part of the blue. Thank you. I said it's okay. No, no, no, I said it's okay. He's like, I am the 6% Yeah, if there was an image, I mean, yeah, I've been a really big proponent of this contract. As far as like when the contract first hit, it felt like the initial response was like, oh, like too much money. And I'm like, I feel like it's like fairly reasonable. I'm not like staying on the mountain top saying, dude, this is like the best contract, best bargain ever. But I don't think it's like an overpaying all that either. I think it's what it, I think he's what is worth.

And so it's okay. I guess I would good contract be like, it's like a really good bargain. Slightly I do have to break it to Isaac that he wrote the question. I think it's okay. It's like, yeah, that's, you know, what it'd been cooler if we got him on a scam deal. Yeah, but I just realized I didn't get the camel hat, that ball. Yeah, good job. We said we just sent it in the tech group. You must have missed that one. Cool. It's important. You should just unplug the extra important. Support and show because over there. You got a military, you got a whole, you got a whole military helmet. Oh, no, put on the helmet. If you put on that helmet this year, we got big problems. The problem with the helmet. It doesn't, it doesn't, it doesn't work with the headphones. Problem with the helmet. We'll do the draft one later. We'll do the draft one on a later date.

We'll talk about that on a different show. But we'll show it because I've been teasing it basically the whole time that 48.6% said that they should have taken Bradenburys instead of more as 41.6% says, should have taken more res. And then 5% said, Yaxel, 4% said, other, just real quick, who do you think the other should have been here in the 4%? Big Mara fans. I guess. Aim it. Trade down. There was some aim at stands for sure. So there were, there were a few that started cognitive. But I think we came listed. The maps just can't be the team. Like if it ends up working out on the box, congrats. Yeah. This can't be your one stab at it. No. I mean, I would, if I voted on this, I would have said Burys because I think that that's what they should do. So are we doing, are we doing this now? I'm going to show this. We're not going to do it right now. I'm going to show it. Thanks for hanging out with us. I like how maps with our camo hats. So if I voted, yeah, I think I'll take a day.
