And now ladies and gentlemen, it is our privilege to introduce to you the honorary captains for this 50th anniversary Major League All-Star Game. Representing the National League, a man who played 19 years right here in Chicago to hit 512 whole runs and who became known simply as Mr.
Cobb, number 14 of Party Banks. The great Ernie Banks, place MVP 11 years in All-Star, and for the Hall of Fame, Mr. Cobb no longer associated with the Chicago Organization. He's looking at nightlight tonight and says it's a great day to play too. And the chance Wells-Up, Ernie, Ernie, and he gets a salute. Not from the South Side, but from all of Chicago and all of baseball. 52-year-old Ernie Banks. And in a moment, the honorary captain for the American League.
The American League's honorary captain was a Hall of Fame shortstop, the manager of both the Washington Senators and Boston Red Sox, a former American League president, and is currently chairman of the board of the American League, Mr. Joe Cronin. 76-year-old Joe Cronin, you talk about a man who can do it all. The shortstop in 1933, a member of the Hall of Fame, the manager of the Washington Red Schins, the Washington Senators of Boston Red Sox, president of the American League, chairman of the board he has touched all the bases. Joe Cronin. Chicago, much more than a doggling town. It's the home of the 50th anniversary of the Old Star game. In Chavisky Park, where it all began. New York is held the Old Star game seven times.
And Ebid's feels a polar ground, Yankee Stadium and Chase Stadium. For Chicago, five times. This is the third time at Chavisky Park twice at Wrigley Field and left Ego Man. To drove in a run in a 33 game as the privilege had thrown out the first ball, Joe. What a tremendous day out here yesterday and right now, around that mound, some great early-year old Dick Bartel, Ben Chapman, Wally Berger, Tony Kuchinello, Bill Dickey, Rick Carroll, Charlie Garinger, Hal Schumacher, and Sammy West. You know, there's a great feeling of nostalgia. There is also the bittersweet feeling here of the dominance of the National League, the fact that they have 111 straight, but to put it in proper perspective. The American League is won one Old Star game since 1962. What that means is the American League is won one Old Star game since Kennedy was president. One one Old Star game since Pete Rose broke into the majors.
The American League is won one Old Star game in the lifetime of current Major Liger Jose O'Quendo of the Metz. And there was a Washington Senator on that American League team, Frank Howard. That really lets you know it's been a long time between wins. Well, I got a man on a mound tonight, a power pitcher Dave Steve. Many people consider him the best pitcher in the American League. He's a hard-throwing right-hander, a hard slider. He'll ride the fastball, he'll sink it, has good control. So very due to change of faces, and probably the best fielder among the pitchers in baseball. He is a tremendous athlete, and his problem was just to try to control a competitive anger. Let's call it that. He didn't like the things not to go his way. You know that record of 10 and 7. The J's average, two runs for each of his seven losses. He allowed only 10 earn runs in his 10 victories, and he's strong. He made 134 pitches to beat the Yankees, 6'5, and he scored 500 runs.
He had successive 10 inning starts, and he won 3 to 1 and 2 to 1. He beat Canda City with 139 pitches, and he should have more wins. He led four to another, and the ninth inning against Detroit and the bullpen let him down. Let 3 to 1 and the eighth inning against the angels and the bullpen couldn't hold it, and he lost two to one in Texas. In other words, work looking at some kind of pitchers, he gets ready to pitch to Steve Sacks, Tim Reigns and Andre Dawson. The American League with Rod Caru and Manitrio, Robin Young, and George Brett on the infield. Jim Reigns, Freddie Lynn, and Dave Winfield on the outfield. Sacks is a good first ball hitter. It'll be interesting to see if you'll take a look at Steve. It's the first time look, Fran. Steve will be trying to get ahead of him. You can bet on that. He is the youngest player to sparred in this year's All-Star Game. He's 23 years old. Good heart slider for his right.
He should wonder, the youngest player in an All-Star Game, but he went back in 1976 was only 20 years old. Fouled away off to the right upstairs. Oh, and two. The dimensions here at Kamiski Park were socks par. 341 down the lines, falling away to 374 of the Allies to 401 and straight away center. But boy, when it was first built, it was an airport. One and two. When Kamiski Park was first built with the guidance of Ed Walsh, it was 362 down the lines and 420 to center. Pitches parked, no doubt. And last pitch, he just handcuffed Simmons. That's the kind of stuff he's got. Oh, and two. One and two. The lights are not taking effect at yet. And a bright blue sky overhead, so it will be particularly tough for the hitters this early in the game.
Two and two. Hit foul, not a play. By the way, for the history majors who were listening in, then we refer to the mayor, the first mayor of Chicago is John Wentworth. Actually, the first mayor was William Butler Ogden. John Wentworth was the first Republican mayor. And it was from his estate that this real estate was purchased for $100,000. A little number up along first, Steve down to get it. Flip-off. Frozen over Karoo's hand. And Sacks is a boy. But that comes under the heading of, man, fight, stomp. You just do not see Dave Steve do that. He's too good a builder. It looked like he just squirmed out. He had Sacks completely pulled. And he's got an easy play once he gets the ball. Karoo and he inside, he just threw it right over his head. Look at the reaction that Steve himself makes. And now Simmons says, bear down. Try to hold him on. But you can bet that these national leaders will be off and running. And the one thing about Sacks showing the speed that we were talking about
in this national league line up right up of the top, Sacks gets aboard, I was very careful to make sure he stayed in the lane. When he left home plate, I thought he was going to run inside the line. But he suddenly realized it and got in tight the restraining line. And made the plate legitimate. The air is Jim Reins, the left builder. Good numbers and he runs exceptionally well. And fully conscious of the national league speed. In the fact that Ted Simmons does not have a good throwing arm. Dave Steve is going to have to tie up the run. He's a lot of pressure on Ted Simmons tonight. I would doubt that Reins would be funny unless it be funny for the face hit early in this game. And Sacks reigned Dostin Oliver Murphy, Smith and Smith all can go on their own.
I think, I think, on a one and all count he's going to go. He's already seen his move. He doesn't go and the pitch is fouled away. Sacks has 29 skull invasives. He's been caught 12. And I really thought that he had seen that very good move and he was ready. Evidently, he didn't get the jump. The Reins checking with Tommy LaSorta, coaching a third, go Tori in the first base coaching box. With Steve's control, you'd almost have the luxury of pitching out and nailing somebody to stop him. He doesn't go and the breaking ball is low. Two and one. Here's that manager's delight though. Two balls in one strike when they got the catcher in the box. Again, Sacks acting like a man who'd like to go and again, Steve spotted it and drives him back.
Steve's sacks trying to get a jump here at the outset, getting a board on the Arab charge to Dave Steve. There he goes. The pitch ups, that throw behind the runner, an easy steal. Reins did a good job in the batter's box. Simmons had a slight hesitation as he went to throw as Reins kind of leaned into it, watched it as he takes the pitch. Watch right there. Then he ducks his way and the throw was kind of a three quarter, it sailed a bit and Sacks who had a pretty good jump. And it's a straight steal. He's looking for that bag. He's not even worried about what's going to happen to the ball. And he's got a stolen base. It was the second time that he looked like he wanted to go. The first time as we told you, I thought he was going to go one and oh, and he didn't get the jump. He didn't get two and one and he made it. So now it's three and one to counter Tim Reins. Sacks at second, nobody out.
Just the started things. Breaking ball hit back to Steve. He looks Sacks back and throws it through. Who lost the ball, I guess, in the sweating sunlight that remains. Sacks to the plate. The ball gets away from Simmons. And Sacks finally gets a hand in there. And all the way to third goes Tim Reins. And Corroule lost the throw. I'd say this is a real Halloween. And he now watch when Steve throws the ball. Corroule just loses it. He had no idea where that ball was. And the throw coming in the Simmons was a sharp hop. He misses the ball completely. But continues to block Sacks off the plate like a tag team resting there. And Simmons does not have the ball at that point. The ball is about 4 feet to the right of the picture. The three official scores get on the whole of the Chicago Tribune. Randy Minkov, the Midwest U.P.I. sports editor.
And Joe Gileotti of the Boston Herald. So they'll put their hits together and we'll get the ruling. But we do know here comes Andre Dawson. And the National League is leading one to nothing. In our pregame, Sean, they talked about one of the reasons George Brett's an unpredictable. And here it is, a Halloween inning to begin the game. Little slider for a strike. They are going to give Corroule the error. Even though you know he lost the throw completely in the waiting sunlight. One and one to count to perhaps the National League's all around ball player. Andre Dawson and he's trying to pick up teammate Jim Reigns from third. Paul never left the infield and there's a run in and a man on third. Two errors. Jim Reigns at third, you might wonder.
There's only been one time a player has had a steal a homin and all stargain. It was part of a double steal with Melon. And Harold trainer, Harold Pytreiner 34 had himself the steal of home. As a good look at that Dave Steve slider, it's a hard slider, good control. Dawson against Dave Steve. And there's Jim Reigns down the line from third. Check Swing, you're going to look at first Swing says Harry Wendelstead of the National League. Dawson tried to hold up and couldn't do it. Taking out the look and you can judge as well. Steve leads the league in strikeouts. What do you think? I thought he went around. So did Harry Wendelstead.
So two errors, a stolen base, one out of runner, third and here is Al Oliver. Oh and one, Dawson. Oliver's lowest batting average in the last seven years is 308. That's the kind of hitter he is. That was his off year. One ball, one strike. He stands a long way from that plate and he also has a very small bat. It's almost like a little league bat, if 31 inches long it, but he really whips it into action in a hurry. And he hits it down the left field line foul out of play. You know Al Oliver, this might surprise you. He's the only national league starter with a career lifetime, 300 batting average. But of course, another interesting contrast between the two starting teams. Six of the eight national league starters began with their original teams. They're still with them. Six of the eight American league starters are not with the original team that signed.
There's been a lot of moving around over in the American League. Tim Reign, the third. Your joiners late. Sax aboard on the Arabi Steve Stoll second. And then Reign's aboard when Caru lost the throw in the light. Sax aboard. Reign went to third. Dawson called out on a half swing for a third strike. Three and two to Al Oliver. Well, we hear so much about the mysterious world of singles and signs. And here we are in all star game and Simmons. And I'm sure that Gary Carter is the same way. We use those same signs of using high school. There it is. Let's see. Hip-Chain jobs. Granted. And he missed with it. So he has trouble for long over now. Without giving up ahead, yet Ron is at first and third. A run over and he'll murpy coming out. Choon on is cut Harvey Keen. You know, Keen when he was a rookie with Detroit established a major one.
He had 209 hits and 679 at bats. He could really swing it. In fact, we talk about nostalgia as well as the current date. You remember 1960 when the defending batting champ Harvey Keen was traded for the defending home run champ Rocky Colovito? Whoa, now that's a blockbuster deal. Frank Lee was involved in that one. He was engineered. Dale Murphy, the National League's MVP last year, went to Florida to the instructional league for five days. And his teammate said, Murphy might be the first man to be the most valuable player one year and the most improved player in the league the next. And he comes up there with Oliver at first and reigns at third, one to nothing nationally. Steve struggling with his control now, two balls and one strike.
Murphy, a real classy young man. In fact, they say that he makes Steve Harvey look like a rowdy. He's the first brave to win the MVP since a great Henry Aaron back in 1957. He didn't get cheated on that two and two, the count. So you can hear that ball popping in the mid. I'm sure you can hear it through your set. We can hear it up here. Steve is kind of a guy. You can break in a new glove, the bullpen, about a day and a half. He had 112 strikeouts to lead the league in any nail Dawson. And now he gets Murphy. So Dave Steve, we're going to try and muscle his way out of the jam. Boy, he had that fastball smoking. And the battle will be Mike Schmidt. And the ball still hasn't really left the infield. Saxed back to the box and there was a ground ball that was lost, the throw from Rod Caru.
Two strikeouts and a walk. And the nationally sends up Mike Schmidt. When Mike Schmidt was a junior in college, he batted left handed. And he can still hit balls out of sight, left handed in batting practice. But he has never played a game or swung in a real game. You know, I found out in a trivia book that in 1923, they brewed. Hit right handed several times. Why are we? Must have been some awfully mean left handers to turn him around. In a ball, that ball, you didn't want to hit left handed in the mid-night. One and one. Mike Schmidt is seventh all-star. And facing Dave Steve, Schmidt's numbers are rather overwhelming with runners at first and third. Schmidt is four for nine with a home run, a triple and two doubles, all extra bass hits. Good, fastball. One and two. You would think you'd be able to pitch Schmidt on the outside corner.
He stands deep in his batter's box and for the real older folks. If you ever saw footage of Roger Haronsby or Sawian Play, it's about where the Roger's stood. When Schmidt goes into that ball, he really steps directly at the ball. And he's ready when he gets to the hitting zone. First and third, two out with the runner going. Oliver, he strikes out the side. What an inning for Steve. Despite two errors, he strikes out Goss and Murphy and Schmidt. And then, as you know, he gets a gift run and takes a lead of one to nothing and Steve gets handshakes all around. A lot of people thought that that would be the last home run ever hitting. Of course, Frankie, appreciate one in that game. There have been a total of 118 all-star home runs hit. But it was only right and proper that the babes should put the seal of approval on it. Mario Soto will be pitching to Gary Carter. You have, Al Oliver, Steve Sacks, Ozzie Smith and Mike Schmidt. The Nip-Tip Rades, Andre Dosson and Dale Murphy in the outfield.
Rod Karoo, Robin Yealt and Fred Lindt. Soto, nine and seven. An excellent fastball and as good a change up as you'll ever see. Eighth, those are slider. It's a decent slider. But that change up really makes the fastball so effective. That's a strike. Karoo hitting 402. He's the whole time both getter for all-star games. 30 million plus. And he promptly bangs into the Nip-Tip Rades and Andre Dosson over to get it. And through, holds up for the line drive, single or left center field. In his heyday as a younger player, he stole home 17 times. But right now, look at his swing. It's really not a time at bat when he's up there. It's a performance almost like a recital for him where he waves that bat.
He adjusts not from day to day. He adjusts from pitch to pitch is what he does. Better now, Robin Yealt. Robin, as you saw, here's your pressure numbers at 315. Well, that's some lineup for Soto. Karoo, Yealt, Lin and Rice. And if you think you're looking for a breather, then you get Brett. Yealt has good power to right center field. He's got a big gap between first and second. If he gets a breaking ball, he'll smack it right through that home. One nothing nationally on a couple of errors. They have swing for strike. We should mention George Maloney of the American League behind the plate. Harry Wendelstead of the National League at first. Ted Hendry at second. And Jim Quick is at third on the foul lines. John Schulach is down the left-fielder line of the American League.
Dave Polone of the National on the left. Here's the gene. It looks so much like the fastball until you start to get ready to hit at it. Billy Gardner coaching at first. Joe Altevelli over at third. They're going to check for a swing. No swings at Harry Wendelstead in the count one and two. Mario Soto. He was quick to acknowledge his countryman, Juan Marichal, and said he hope he could follow in his footsteps. And here he is in the all-star game. It's hard to believe, but when he prosproken,
Karoo, he was talking Stole Home 17 times, seven times in one year. He can do everything besides him. And then I found a shocker Joe in the trivia book. Do you realize that Luke Gary, Stole Home 15 times the Iron Horse? You'd almost want to ask why? When he could do it so easily by hitting the ball nine miles outside of ballpark. The complete athlete. Rod Karoo at first won nothing nationally. Paul can just start. Last ball. Takes care of Robin Yowd. And the pitch was in, so Robin couldn't extend his arms and get any power at all. And now the batter is Fred Lynn. And the first thing Lynn does is take a look at Joe Altebelli. So far, we've seen a lot of muscle.
Remember Steve? Struck out the side. Dawson Murphy and Schmidt. And now Soto goes to work with his strikeout. Lynn hitting 259 during the regular year, but he's been plagued with injuries. There was that off-speed pitch. It is so effective by Soto. Not only is it the team to speed, but also where he spots it. He really tied up Lynn. Lynn has that gap, much like well like Yowd Hanth between first and second. He's going to try to pull it through there. Soto knows that. Or Lynn can pull the string himself. He has hit home runs in all-star classics, against such illustrious names as Tom Seever, Steve Carlton, and Bob Welch. Corrullet first held on by Oliver, won to nothing nationally, bottom of the first.
Two and one to count. Lynn does a good job, as you see, of giving a third-base coach a chance to go through a whole series of signs. You doubt very much if any play is on with the kind of hitters they got, first base being big gap there. Check of Corrullet doesn't go. Now they can put a play on it. Wish they'll run and hit three and one. But of course on deck, there's more sock to come, Jim Rice. A lot of managers say if you're going to run three and two, you might go run three and one. I think I'd hold him right here, then. I'd let him use the bat all the way. And especially if Lynn can get something to pull, you have Oliver on the bag and Saks is shading up the middle, right side wide open. One run, no hits for the nationally, no runs one hit and two errors for the American League. Three and one.
Crew doesn't go. And there's ball four, so here comes the American League. First and second, one out, and Jim Rice, who has been red hot, coming up. When Reggie Jackson sitting in to the bell, there was a rumor that Ogleby was going to start, but Rice blazing. And he's the left fielder. We just got word at first by some fire. Her windowstep was talking about that son that blinded Crew. He said, you just couldn't see at all what that son coming through there. And the son he was proven by the throw, and Crew just couldn't see. Good handle. Jim Rice has had six home runs in his last five games for this weekend against the Yankees. So he comes in here blazing hot. He has all kinds of credentials. He led the American League three consecutive years. Only Thai Cobb has done that. Most home runs in the American League the last seven years.
Incredible player. Breaking ball missed one and one. Just started there and watching Gary Carter have been on that. Three one pitch. Another reason doesn't show up in the past for a while. Crew is in front and with a great arm that Gary Carter has behind the play. Two on one out in the first inning. One in one fastball is fouled off one and two. You know the consummate offensive season I guess is when a player hits at least 300 with at least 30 home runs and 100 RBI is OK. Rice has had three such seasons the most by any active player. I think he could hit two any with his elbow. So strong is that he's followed by George Brett. So Leonard first, Karoo at second, one away in the first inning, one did nothing nationally. Missed trying to pinpoint the black two and two. You know you don't about Gary Carter's arm, Joe.
He has thrown out 53% of the attempted to steal. That's the best and the big leagues. It's got to cut. One and a half or the third. It gets away from Smith. My picture up throws widely to first. Everybody's safe as Oliver comes up the back and. It could have been a double play ball but the ball was also in hard and a weight for the Triumvirate to make the official ruling. Here it is. It looks like he was going to make the play. I would rule it air because he was right there. He is an all-star. And there's the close-up. Bitches hitting right in the old belt buckle and everybody is safe and it looks who's up. Well, you get the feeling right now. It's a pure six-row. It is only one and nothing. But here comes the American League. And instead of a double play to get out of the inning, the bases are loaded. And here's George Brett. And he was cheated. It is Heath All-Star Game.
On one to count. Brett hitting 3.64. Bryce at first, Leonard II, Carua III, won away. Give me. Brett has a lot of interesting numbers. But he has done something that really takes your breath away. That was in 1980. He hit 24 home runs, but he only had 22 strikeouts for the first players in 1956 to do that. But in anyone approached that, well, Joe DiMaggio had seven years and finishes his career with 361 home runs, 369 strikeouts. Two and two. Rod Caru down the line from third. Brett landed second.
Jim Raish at first and Soto and a jam. George Brett is a prize pupil of Charlie Lau. Now the White Sox hitting coach who just got out of the hospital. We hope that Charlie's watching, feeling better. He says the greatest quality about Brett is to be able to swing that bat and not move his head. Two and two. I fly ball in the left center. Andre Dawson angling over. Tagging up a third is Caru. And Dawson's going to throw to third as Caru brings into time run. And Lynn and Rice holding. So we're one-one in the first inning. Thanks to Aaron. And Harvey Keen and company applause the arrival. And Caru is Brett picked him up. And American League benches alive. I tell you, they are sick and tired of hearing about losing. This game has been hyped so much about that. Lucy Strington almost overshadowing the game itself. Which borders have been on the ridiculous because when you really add it up
it is still a next-efficient game as great as it is. So Ted Sevenths who has started all-star games in two leagues. He started for the Nation Lake in 1978. Coming up with first and second. Two down and a one-one time. By the way, just before Brett hit that fly ball you might have wondered. Has there ever been a grand slam home run hidden in all-star game? And the entry is known. One ball no strikes. A little smoke on that one. And when it falls to the top of the net you think you're in a lumber yard. They were stacking two by fours. It's just flat. He is really firing as was Dave Steve. One and one to count to Ted Sevenths who holds a Nation Lake record for switch hitters as far as all-bruns are concerned. He had 172 when he was over there. And he can still hit him.
Two and one to count. Husqvall Perez loosening up down in the bullpen. Ground ball back up first. Oliver is there. He's going to hand a Soto coming over in time for the last round. So the play goes three-one. However the American League thanks to the Arab I might spit on what might have been a double play ball and at the end of an 80-01 time. One-one ties we go to the second. Let's go to New York to Don Sutton and trace a thrown ball. Thanks, Ben. You know we really can't show you how fast a ball is traveling. You use a radar gun for that. But with our NBC Tracer what we want to show you folks is how much a pitch moves or slides occurs. You know a few years ago somebody tried to convince us all that a curve ball was just an illusion. We'll take a look at this Dave Steve breaking ball and tell Steve Sack that it doesn't break. As the game progresses we'll trace some more pitches for you but now back to Chicago.
That obviously was an overhand curve ball the kind when we were young. As we call it drop there certainly is progress. Which you know Ben I remember Wiggle-Y and the great Dodger pitcher when they said a curve ball is an optical illusion. He said it might be but I'll tell you something you get behind a 360 feet 6 inches away and I'll want you to death. Sure. We did it with the Tracer. Why I did it with his Womper. Well talking about a Womper here's Gary Carter. Carter followed by Ozzy Smith and then Mario Soto. You know what? Well first inning we have a one-one tie and breaking ball missed. All two. Well there's an all-star game record already three errors in an inning. You know Carter doesn't have as many homers as usual as you hear. But when you look back his slump started at the end of last year. He hit only two home runs after August 27th. So I think catching took a great deal out of him. Well back one and one.
He's an interesting player. 78 he said a major league record for the fewest pass balls. One. The next year he came right back with a dozen. Curve ball and he hits it to right field. Pretty deep. When feel however is there. The good year blimp enterprise from Mopin O'Vease Park of the file at Captain Patrick Henry Parsons. From West Virginia Enterprise to the newest good year blimp. One of only four in the world. Captain Patrick Henry at the wheel. A bird's eye, a blimp side view. More one, Ozzy. The Wiz as they call him. One of the two switch hitters along with range in the starting lineup. Interesting for Ozzy.
He went four for five in the last game of a double header. To get his average to two old five. Only one player has ever started in an all star game. Hitting less than 200. You know who it is? No idea who Deemey. Reggie Jackson. Of course. Same same guy. Under 200 to you. He all started. Under y'all started. Well, Ozzy was in a little slump. He was over 29 and he was 17 for 106. That's not a little slump. He was hurt. Clive all under left field and rice is there. Waiting to handle it. Just like that, a couple of clive balls two down. You know, we were looking up at the good year blimp enterprise. 50 years ago, two good year blinks. They were reliant on the turret.
Floated above the first all star game in Kamiski Park in 1933. Keep tying the pass to the present. That's the charm of the all star game. Like it's more than anything else. And especially this one. Oh, this one. Yesterday was great to see all those. Judy Johnson. Fuck Leonard. Why do hers are the manager of the National League? He had a quick look at him. He's done almost everything. Players scout coach, manager, general manager, and even director of playing personnel. Why do you hear his dog? In fact, in the years where he's had a full season, 162 games, he's finished first four times in second once. That's about as successful as you can get. Two and two, the Gouda Mario Soto. One, one second and a Clyde Chopper.
Cutting across in front is bread to get him. Ah, go back to the past. All right, how about Carl Hubble striking out five of the most feared hitters in a row in 1934? Where you certainly recognize the gray hair in one, Joe DiMaggio, and seated in front of him to the left of your screen just eating a peanut or lamb knows the payday. Yeah, we've got Jules and stars scattered all over the ballpark tonight. As Dave Whitfield, Manitrio, and Dave Steve Duov, bottom of the second inning, one-one time. Whitfield started for the National League in 79, and the American League in 81, and again this year, he is only one of a few who never played in the minor leagues. He joined the Padres right off the campus
of the University of Minnesota. I think there's only 21 players in history. He could come without any mind-align experience. Some of them are rather illustrious names like K-Line and Co-Facts and Frisch and Banks and Odd and Feller. Dave Whitfield. Remember after the 1980s in the Yankees Gate and the largest contract in history? And it could be worth more than $20 million by the end of its 10 years, they tell me. What do you do? What are what? Line drive down the left field line in the corner, hooking and goes fearful. Tim Reigns chasing it. Whitfield into second makes a turn, holding there with a long double. And he hit that like a $20 million man. He's in the middle of the field. Doubles to open up matters in the second inning.
That is the second hit of Mario Soto. And it'll bring up many trio. Trio is in the record books. He is the first player ever to make back-to-back starts in different leagues in the Old Stargate. Winfield, a big guy, is now five for 12 in Old Starplay. Boy one. You know an interesting number. John Lowe of the Daily News in Los Angeles pointed out something. The fact that five of the ten nationally pictures began this year with seven career wins or less. And they're on the Old Star Squad. Ground ball to the right side. And he's in the dirt. And he pulled over off the bat. He has that mental block.
He knows it. It was a routine ground ball trio trying to pick up a face with an eye and watch him. He just throws it right in the ground. It was an easy play. And the sort of hold on to our organization. They're worried about that. Well, I tell you why. There's a note. And I mean most of them have been the simplest of throws. And it is absolutely mental now. So in a sloppy first inning and a half, all the wildly exciting at the same time we've had four errors. Here is Dave Steve. The infield has to come up a little bit with Winfield down the line. Do you remember Dave Steve with the bat? There's the fun just to get the man to second. So does going to tag him out. We were talking about sacks as troubles throwing to first base. And it's nothing like showing you.
This was again since an addy bird hoot was pitching. Pull the runner off. Those sacks fit to be tied. And it is ball start. Second appearance. There's no sense messing around with Peru after the sacrifice. So they will walk him and the patient will be loaded. Rather than trying to set up the double play obviously because you got young landed rice coming up. That's like walking death row. You know you're going to have something happen to you. You got a pretty good idea of what it is. So in a moment Robin Yount will be coming up. We're in the bottom of the second inning in a one one tied. Adley Hammaker, the left-hander from the Giants loosening up. In the nationally bullpen, Pasquale Perez had been up earlier. And in a moment Robin Yount.
Yount of course, the only man to have two four hit games in the World Series he did it against the Cardinals. Very much accustomed to the pressure. He struck him out the first time so it did by keeping it ball in on him. Now good hitters, they had just, they looked for pitches. You can bet he'll be looking for something in tight. Yount's a little hungry, he's over five and all stargades. It's just trying. And he struck out in the first inning. The wind field down the line from third, Trio at second, first in Mario Soto in trouble. And a one one tied. In the dirt, a good save by Carter. There's a great example for the young catcher. You got that bass runner on. You don't want to catch it, ball. You want to smother it. You want to mutilate it. Watch him just get in front of it with the body. And he just smothered it. And that's just a tremendous play. That just doesn't happen.
You practice that. You feel like an idiot when you're doing it and having a guy bounce and balls in front of you going black and blue, but it stays off just like it did there. The one and one to count to Robin Yount. I fly all the center, Dawson. He's there, tagging up his wind field. Wind field coming to the plate. Good throw to the plate. Good and slate. So Robin Yount is scoring, fly ball to pick up the big man from third. And to get the American League, a 2-1 lead. And remember, they cashed in the air by Mike Schmidt with a scoring fly ball by Brett. Two plays here, which were all star plays. Many trios ground ball, even though it was at the second inning. They picked up a bass with an hour with a man on second move. They've over and in the second vice-fly. They got the job done. There have not been too many major league plays. No, there haven't. This has been one and all so far when we're on after reading this claimer. Nope. Here's Freddie Lindwood, run as it first and second.
Rod Karoov and Maddie Trio. Oh and one. Lind walked in the first inning. Two runs, two hits, and two errors for the American League. One run, no hits, and two errors for the national league. Freddie Lindwood, for nine years, has piled up a 301 lifetime batting average in the benches. Well, that's a nationally bench with Pedro Guerrero talking to Johnny Bench. Foul away. Lind is a native of Chicago, so in a sense, he comes home here. When he is hot, he can just tear up a team. In the playoffs last year against Milwaukee, he hits 6-11. But he's always had a lot of nagging injuries.
Karoov at first, Trio at second. Two down, one and two. Little number foul behind the plate. I like those close ups of pitches like we just had Ben just to see what he's doing. You see Soto take that big breath of air, and he closed his eyes. He looked down. Every pitcher is different. Right before they throw it though, they do pick up that target. One and two. Johnny. Soto is humming. And he had to go to the muscle to take care of Lind. Now, over the errors, heard him flush the doubles. And in each two to one, American, and in two, we'll be right back. Have a nice message to the old mistakes. Dave Winfield got a big face hit. Don Sutton uses tracer. Here it is. In order for a fastball to be effective, he needs to have speed like Nolan Rye and movement like Tommy John.
Or you have to put it in a real good spot. Well, Soto had movement speed, but he didn't get it in a good spot. Here's what Dave Winfield did to it. I'll show you guys in Chicago. So when Fieldhood doubled, then took third on Sacks as airy, he would have taken third on the groundball anyway. But then Steve Sacrifice, they might have gotten out of the inning on Yoms Fly Ball. It could have been the third out, and said it was a scoring fly ball. And here is the trouble Mr. Sacks to lead it on. He made his big league debut here in the city of Chicago in 1981. He got his base hit in his first at bat, and a year later, in the first anniversary of his first game in the majors, he scored the winning run in a 21-any game here. So Chicago needs a lot to win. One ball of no strikes. You know, it was tough being a lead off man in the national league last year.
Only Sacks, Tim Reins and Mookie Wilson. The only national league player is able to hold their lead off job throughout the entire season. Two in one. Did you have our trouble throwing the ball? Yes, let's say back to the pitcher. Yes, sir. He hits it back to Steve. Over to Coru. It's a typical thing, man. You got to where you get up, and you throw the ball, and you just can't turn the ball loose. Watch this replay, and the ground reacts. That was a curve ball right back to Steve, and he kind of sets himself, and he's not going to throw this one away. I would practice, I'd go out and give him maybe five feet from the pitcher, and just lob it back, lob it back, work my way back, but he can't hit. It's a mental thing, that's all I can tell you. I can't explain it. Tim Reins takes his strike, going one.
Reins was a board, when Coru lost the throw in the twilight, although actually was a lot of sunlight, piercing through the stands. On and one. I can name you two other guys. My guy, he had that problem, and Dale Murphy, I believe, has a catcher. He couldn't hit, he's not being a big leagues today. One ball, one strike. Pet Jus, he got so they couldn't throw strikes, he fell like Rex Barney, who threw a no-hitter, and suddenly he just couldn't do it. Kevin Sochi. He just quit, because he was afraid he might kill somebody, he was so wild. One and two. Foul arm. Ember singly enough Reins who is a race horse. They had to put a pitch runner in for that last week, and throw it out. He pinched it on a bad leg, beat out a ball even then, and had to come out for a runner.
He came into this game with 34 stolen bases. Third inning, two to one American league, national league, still looking for a hit. Foul away, that was over in the high rent district. That's right, we're the commissioner of baseball, isn't it? They're athletes, front of it. The visitors have enough troubles with the job, and look at the happy Chandler, and look who's seen it behind him. George Burns. And Reins is caught looking. That's four strikeouts for the American league strike on leader Dave Steem. Now the record below strikeouts in an all-star game is only six. Hubble, Van Damier, Janssen, Larry Janssen, and Ferguson, Jenkins. And here's Dave with four strikeouts and two and two third inning. Andre Dawson struck out on a half-swing in the first inning.
Boy, you have to like the Steve when you throw that hard. It's big a breaking curve ball he has, control of both. He comes right at you. And you get a lot of Dawson. He's played the entire all-star game each of the last two years, so he usually gets a lot of advance. High-fly ball to right field, wind field on the track at the wall, makes the catch. The Dave Steem goes through three innings, allows an unerred run. No hit strikes out four. And he was fairly magnificent. And at the end of two and a half-swing came back into the National League one. So I'm a bigger day. Let me buy a beer. Sure. Ah, these fans, I love them. When I came in, they didn't recognize me at first. But then when I told them who I was, next thing you know they're buying me my favorite beer. They know a sex big leagueers drink light because it's got a third less calories in their regular beer.
It's less filling and it tastes great. Thanks. They had some pleasure to buy a beer for a great pitcher like Whitey Ford. So I lied. The late beer from Miller. Everything he wanted in a beer and less. Hey, Whitey, I thought you were a lefty. Oh, that's right. One, Mario Soto will have called it a night and a game. Mario went two innings, allowed two runs and two hits, two walks and two strikeouts. An era cost of a run in the first inning and also in the second. And left hander, Atley Hammaker, of the San Francisco Giants coming in. Hammaker, there's Kalia Stremsky, his turn, 18 All-Star games. I hope we see him in this one and Bench. They're saying goodbye. Hammaker has a good slider. The thing they say about him though, you've got to be ready to hit because he comes right at you with good control. So when he takes the mound, he's going to throw strikes. There's no waiting and checking him out. Slider is his outpitch.
You know what he did in April, Joe? He was the pitcher of the month. And you know why? Very simply. In the month of April, from April to 13, through the 23rds, a little more than 10 days, 11 days. He allowed only five batters to get on base. He got 58 out of 63. I mean, he was totally unbeatable. Why wouldn't you sign the five batters? Yeah, they did. A right away. Five batters. Five batters. His earned run average is close to the record. It's 1.7. And the lowest for a left-hander in the modern era of 1920 to date, the great Carl Hubble. It was 1.6, so he's something. And so is Jim Reiss and George Brett and Ted Simmons. Reiss, who's aboard, was looking at a double playball kicked by Mike Schmidt in the first inning. And he popped in foul out of play on one.
They weren't going to wait. First pitch by Hevaker, he went to work on it. There's no sense trying to get a base on both. Reiss doesn't mess around anyway, but as you see, Monty Urban. That's another great name out of the bat. Reiss is a killer on the road. 15 of his 22 home runs have been hit on the road. He has a mere 631 slugging percentage when he has a suitcase in his hand. Jim Reiss. Oh, dude. One and two. That was the classic example of the ball player not showing up the umpire. He didn't like that second call strike, but he kept looking towards center-fail and made his speech. He was staying a lot of games that way. And he probably hammers it to Lam Reiss goes back. It's on. Home run on the road. Thank you, Reiss.
Five five through the great Kavon salesman, Mr. Jim Reiss. He had looked like somebody was pouring milk. He was just a white blur. More like the left field. It never got up. It never got down. It just went straight out. And look at that American late fence. They're tired of hearing about losing 19 of the 20. They're leading three to one. The batter now is George Redd. He had a scoring fly ball in the first inning. That left field wall is nine feet ten inches. It was just a low line drive that landed right there in the picnic area.
I was your member. A home run hit here in the 59-world series. How spiff was standing here? Somebody knocked a big bucket of beer that went on his head. Remember, the strike got the beer shampoo. The rains did not have any rain. There's a drive to center, but Dawson has to get in the line. The wall. Red is going for three. And the relay by Sam Schiske. Here's a look at it. It looked like Dawson might get to it. It wasn't even close. It just sunk away. It almost went on it. And it's a ten-foot-y of just the hit of like that. It just sinking all the way. And Redd has himself a three-base hit. It all went into a state not to wear you out with numbers. But George Redd has a triple. He's led the American League in triple three times.
The only other player to do it is the important tie-com. So to see Redd triple, what else is new? And the batter now is ten-sevenths and he in field halfway. And then hammock has been lathered. Right-o-hole run. Redd and triple. And it count all at one to seven. Three to one and favorite of the American League. Popped it up on the right side. Sax is falling. Tagging is Brett. And Sax will run it back in. One away. One to one to a few. Put your in an all-star game. There are no soft spots. There are no breeders. Here you are waiting to rise and Brett and Seminay get windfield. That's why they're here. I tell you. Well, windfield, a hook that doubled on the left field corner in the second inning, remember. And came around a score on the climb wall by Robin Young.
You know, windfield was born on a very historic day in baseball history just to link the pass with the present. His birthday is on over the third, 1951. That was the day Bobby Thompson hit the home run off Ralph Branca to give the Giants the national league pen and over the Brooklyn Dodd. And they had windfield with born that day. Seems like day before yesterday. That's why the game was being delayed. The bullpen's out here. And Komiski Park way out in the outfield. And the player has to wait on the sidelines and the umpires is okay. You can go on across. All right, big windfield. Trying to pick up Brett. The infield is halfway and the American League is leading three to one. As George comes down the line under the guide of Joe Aldebelle. And a big chopper up the middle makes it four to one American League. And in waist any time on hammocker they just went to work first pitches.
They went to whack and windfield drives it in. And he's a base dealing threat. He wasn't talking about baseball but Winston Churchill once said the price of greatness is responsibility. Taking the responsibility to take the responsibility to the game. He wasn't talking about baseball but Winston Churchill once said the price of greatness is responsibility. Taking the responsibility full of charge. Rice homers, Brett triples, windfield singles. And the great ones have given the American League the four to one league. And here's Manny Trio. Four runs, five hits with the American League. One run, no hits for the National League. Line drive, face into the field. Windfield will stop at second on a single by Manny Trio. And the American League is after the National League.
Joe Aldebelle wants to make sure windfield is okay. And Dr. Sincage is coming out of the American League dugout. Windfield hit the bag, oddly at second. And Aldebelle just got out there and windfield said, oh, I'm okay. And here is Dr. Sincage of the California Angels. Take a look at the way he hits it, Joe. He had ideas about going to third and instead of looking at the bag he was watching the reins and left field. Then when he put the brakes on he needed those radio shoes and get a little grip with some studs. He slept, but he's all right. And we're going to have a pinch hitter. See him looking at the outvale. He's not wants to look at the bag. And when he sees he can't get the third whoops I better make me a U-turn here. So Dr. Sincage sat up there by Harvey Kean. To hit for Dave Steve.
The Sincage was third in the MVP voting last year to Robin Yowne at Eddie Murray. And he has five numbers this year. He has 15 home runs, a 300 batting average. The only American leaker up there. But those numbers. Four and one. Twice in the month of August last year. The Sincage hit three home runs in a game. He won up with 30. He's got a lot of soccer. He's got dramatic home run in one of our Saturday games of the week in Detroit. And Skanyors tied it up in a ninth and he wanted an extra innings. He's up there now with Winfield and Sack and Trio at first. And he's going to one American league, a high fly ball in the right center. Dawson and Murphy and Dawson is the captain out there and makes a catch.
So the Sincage fly ball to shallow center, two down and Rod Caru coming up. You talk about numbers and we all know Caru is a good hitter. Caru has 808 multiple hit games. You round off the season to 160 games. That means for five seasons every game he got two or more hits for five years. The only other story I love better is the one you think it out on Reggie Jackson. Yeah, but I can identify with the Reggie Jackson but the only guy I can identify with that is Superman. And he probably snaps it into the field from Beechhead. Winfield on his way to the plate. Green's throw is way off the mark picked up by Smith down to Sack to drop the throw holding a third as Trio. Five to one American league.
Mike Smith couldn't get anything on the throw. It wasn't handled at second base. You can see the hesitation if you to hell that ball he's out but the ball is laying on the ground. You can see it. And so everybody's safe and not only is the American league just whacking the baseball there really running the base as well. Throw I think by the hand he was the up on second base ready to call him out. Now they're going to walk robbing you out and then a load of the bases. You got to tell it again. You know the Reggie Jackson the other side. Oh well we were doing that game and detried you said he struck out 2,100 and 26 times I said making the 500 times at bat one season. He went four years without hitting the ball. And you made the all-star team one year hitting less than 200 and speaking of multiple hit games. Peru's got another one to nine and coming down. Jim Rice beaming in the dugout. He started it all with the home run and Freddie Lin will be the batter.
Rob and Yaldes at first. Ron Caru is at second and Manny Trio is at third. Freddie Lin walked and struck out. Or Freddie Lin and there's Jim Rice who let it off with the home run on deck. Only once is Lin ever managed to play 150 games in a season. It's been in big trouble. The other side of a point Eddie Murray whom we'll see later has never played under 150 games. Well they've earned one in the first one in the second and three in the third. They have pushed Antley Hammaker around and it is five to one American. One more one try.
They hit a close up of Hammaker. If you're wondering what that button is, that's a famous cry of the candlestick. You stay for an extra inning game and you get awarded this medal. I guess you call it because it does get cold and candlestick bark. There you see it. Man Candlestick bark the home of next year's all-star. One and two the count of Freddie Lin. Lin surprisingly has really been struggling with men in scoring position and he's got the base loaded. He's hitting less than 200 men in scoring position. He out at first, Caru at second, Trio at third, two out. And he drives it to the right. That close work will be way back and there it is. The first grand slam in all four history.
The first grand slam in all four history. The Adley Hammaker has been driven to cover on the first grand slam home run in all star history. Hit by that man, smiling, breadlin. Here's his time at bat. Watch the reaction. He knows he touched it off.
He's watching it. The Merculing is a bit upset, man. One and inning seven runs in the third inning. And look at Fred Lin as he has just knocked in four. We'll be back with more fireworks. Nine one American. Cheers for the American League here in Kamiski Park. It's a record setting inning. Seven runs in the inning. Back in 1934, the American League scored six, but seven is a big one. And Bill Dolly, the kid who literally came from the back of beyond from nowhere, is pitching to Jim Rice. Dolly is only the third player in history who began the year in the minors. And he has a downcast Hammaker. Kurt Ball has popped up on the right side and sacks as he has it.
The American League devouring the national A with a seven run third inning. A record inning for all-star play. And they lead the national league now. Nine to one as they drove Adley Hammaker to cover. They had two under and runs against Mario Soto. And then they rolled a big seven against Hammaker. There was a triple by Brett singles by Winfield Trio and Karoo. A home run by Rice and a grand slammer by Lin and Lance Parrish from Detroit. Well handled Texas Rick Honeycutt. What an inning, Joe. A big big inning. And of course there goes that national league speed when you give your pitcher that big a lead. That cuts down a lot of things that you can do. Honeycutt, when they talk about Ham, the name of Tommy John comes up. He keeps the ball down, sinker baller. Those more slider than a curve ball. Pretty good control. So, Honeycutt is a new pitcher, parished a new catcher.
Back talking about him being another Tommy John, somebody did a little percentage. And there's a line drive there on the line. Jacing it is Jim Reich and into second base goes Al Oliver with a double. They were saying it over 70% of all the outs reported by Honeycutt are ground balls. And Oliver promptly opens up with a double. It's one of those nights. It could be the fats against the leans last time at Fats for a win. And that by the way is a hit for the national league. Right on the chalk. Dale Murphy who struck out in the first inning coming out. Down away. Honeycutt last year was about as far from an old star game as possible as you look at Dale Murphy.
And I'm going to have to go back to the old star game. Honeycutt last year was five and seventeen. This year in the old star game. Been a look at this Murphy and I marvel. He's great athlete for such a classy young man as we I was in a couple of bankers last year. I'm convinced somewhere on their bodies the good house keeping seals. And he drives into right center field for a base. So Oliver is on his way to score and holding on the long single as Dale Murphy. So the national league without a hit for three innings. He gets a double from Oliver in a single by Murphy for the run. Here comes Lynn coming over and cutting in front of him is Winfield. He's an aggressive outfielder and you get everything you can get your hands on.
He does and cars you drive back in there. So Dave Winfield the twenty million dollar man makes the throw in and the batter is Mike Schmidt. Mike Schmidt might be the strongest man in the national league. Once in a game in the Astridome in Houston. He hit a speaker which was a hundred and seventeen feet high and three hundred and twenty nine feet from home plate. And the loudspeaker was suspended from the roof. There were runners at first and second at the time. The ball hit the speaker and dropped and nobody knew what to do. He didn't get an RBI for it. They have since raised the loudspeaker. He's around balled out of short stuff. He's fielded by Yon over to Trio. Back to the road. That'll play. Oh what a play by Trio. He didn't even wait to let that ball hit the glove. He took the toss from Yon in the bare hand and with that great arm watching now.
Here comes Murphy. He's not trying to take him out. Look at Trio. Just bare hand and there she goes and there's not even close. Beautiful play. Meanwhile Oliver comes home. Manitrio back to back starts for two leagues. He's something. And it is nine to two American League and the batter is Gary Carter. War one, one and oh. Carter flying to right in the second inning. His father is here with him. His dad is celebrating his 65th birthday today. Sound away. One and one. So the national league got a couple of errors from the American League to pick up the gift run. The national league committed some errors to give it back in the first made another big error in the second. And it was two to one American and the American League then exploded for a record seven runs in the third inning.
Carter it's a fly ball into somewhat shallow center. Freddie Lane is right there. So the double play for the blocks for the inning. And the national will get to run on two hits. Nobody left. And the score in the end of three and a half minutes to the American League nine. Now the national league two. Johnny Bench went out to help warm up Bill Dolly and then retired to the dugout. We're hoping to see him in the game before it passes into history. Well, the young pitcher on the mound is quite a story. And there of course, Carlisle Strenzby who is also in his last role star game. And we're sure hope he has gets it. Here's a kid who began the year in the minor league. And is in the all star game. He is only one of three ever to do that. And George Brett hits a fly ball down the left field line in Tim Reigns over in the corner to make the catch and foul ground.
Well, we joined everybody else in asking young Dolly what it felt like to go from the minors to the all star game. Well, I've been asked that question many, many times since I've been here for about 24 hours. And probably the places that I can describe this on this completely dumb especially right now a few hours or four games time. I just hope by the seventh rate thing when I'm in there, everything will calm down and I can get these merciless superstars out. Well, I'll be looking at a superstar now in Lance Parrish in account of one in case you wonder. The other two rookies who started in the minors and made it to the all star game then year Don Swall with the Red Sox and Don Nukum with the Brooklyn Dodgers. And I had the name Bill Dolly who is created from Cincinnati, Houston. No down goes Paris and he stalks the mound. He's about over third base. He's going to just have a little.
He's no doubt very high strong as he said he was hoping he would settle down. Pretty good way to break in get Brett on a fly ball strike out Paris. And now here's that man went field again. The national league remains Oliver Sack Smith and Schmidt Reigns Dawson and Murphy caught her behind the plate. And there have been three nationally pitcher Soto Hamacher and Dolly. Windfield has a double on a single he scored twice driven in one. I want to. I like this big kid. He wants that ball. You know, everybody has different expressions. And I asked Terry Kennedy and I was asking some of the other national lagers about this young kid. He said, well, he's got good gas, which means he throws hard. He's got great smoke.
He brings a lot of heat. So obviously it's his fast ball that impresses everybody. Bill Dolly. He's 25. And there's a base hit into that field. So windfield goes three for three, a double and two singles. And in his all star career, windfield is hitting five hundred and he's seven for fourteen. What a man for the spotlight. And a pretty good night so far one run driven in two runs scored three base hits. That's nine hits for the American League. And here's Manitrio. He was aboard on the throwing air by Steve Sacks and the second inning and single a left in that wild third inning.
One and one to Calvin Manitrio. Dave Drovecki beginning to loosen up for the national league. Breaking ball missed. The pitch you spot is two up second in the fifth inning for the national. Hit down the right field line foul and out of play. It's a good bullpen here in Kamiski Park. And if you wonder why I say a good bullpen ball player, at least those of us who live in the most of our lives, we think it's good when you're away from the manager. You close to the fans. You don't hear him. You don't hear him. And you can get fit. Breaking ball fouled away. Yeah, you can warm up under the soon name out there. Some of the bullpen you can't do anything. Look how poor they are. I mean, this way out there in right center field. No way the manager can look at you. It's a pretty hard to stay in the game too.
That's a problem. Well, you got a radio. You got the fans. And the food. I'm trying to let feel my trio, but range on the track is there to make the catch. The windfield gets a base hit and they leave him. No runs. One hit. The American league hitters know about Dolly, but how about Don Sutton and Tracer? Let's look. All right. You know, there have been very few good pitches for us to Tracer. Today Steve left the game, but Dolly shows us right here a very good slider. And what's a slider? A short, quick breaking ball that looks like a fastball until it's too late to do anything about it. Just ask Mr. Perry. Okay. You know, Vin, I think we're going to point out that it's not animation and it's a memory that that's the track of the ball. Sometimes you get the idea there's somebody drawn it, but that's the way the ball went. It really illustrates, I'd like to see a slider on that. I'd like to see a slider moving in on a hitter.
I don't know. That would be the one to look. You know what I'd like to see? But a knuckleball. Look who's coaching first base. Ernie Banks is taking over for Joe Torrey in the national league's first base coaching box. And it's going to be Ozzy Smith, Dickie Thon, and then Steve Sachs do it. Or one, one to know, Ozzy Smith lined the left field in the second inning. Switch hitter. Right handed, and as you can see, no power. In there. He is without a doubt the most acrobatic shortstop to ever play the game. And I hope somewhere in the course before he comes out. The people see him. They saw enough of him in the World Series. Will you ever forget him going out the last game and doing a back flip? Yeah, he is a true acrobat. One and two.
Ernie hits it in the hole and grounds it into right field. Well, the national league trying to get off the deck. And Ozzy Smith singles against Rick Honeykund. The batter now will be Dickie Thon, the case of a young player who is really just starting to come into his own. He's the only national league shortstop hitting over 300. This young man could be the shortstop of the 80s. He is a tremendous ball player. Now, another note with Ozzy Smith at first. Thon was the third toughest player in the league to double up last year behind Joe Morgan and Mooke Wilson. And he's the number three hitter in the Astro lineup. I don't think in his early days as a reserved shortstop. But the angels that he would ever think he'd be the number three hitter, but he has 10 hole runs.
Two and all the count. Nine to two. The American league just blew the national league right out of the tub in the third inning with a record seven run. And the national league trying to pick up the pieces. And there's a patient trying to look at the center. Ozzy will go to second and hold there. The honey cut is not fooling people. And with first and second and nobody out. If sax, brains and Dawson coming up. Oh, it was well hit as we look at Harvey Keaton pat dobson. Of course, with that seven run lead, the national league they have to play station to station. Quite a rehearsal camp when he plays on. It's getting the first, get the second, get the third. Steve, be tricky. Steve Sack, you have ever hit the little number back to Dave Steve, who shot put at the ball over Karoo's head for an error.
An in-sack stole second and eventually scored last time. I'll be hit back to the box. There is over two with a run scored and he's committed to no one. Run is in first and second. So pretty good running speed out there. It's like a two-haw. I'm in the sort of third bassist manager. He'd really, really have a blast with that sway. I'm then. I'm Dave Ruth. I'm Dave. Well, then one to count. Good one. What's got him crazy, Sack said. He has already made more errors than any second baseman in the major leagues all of last year.
And he hits it to the hole. Here's Isaac Smith, a round third and he will score to make a nine-three American. Yeah, there's nobody out in the fifth inning. Robin Yow really gave that a good effort in trying to knock the ball down. Now you see Fred is in your picture. You as many to see Yow make a dive trying to knock it down. He really did a half-gainer hoping that he could knock it down and save a run. And that's why he's the most valuable player. So Yow comes up empty after a brain-ever. He almost knocked his boomerles off. It is nine to three American. And you have Steve Sacks at first. Dicky Thorn is in second and Reigns aboard on an error and struck out at the plate. Number one, Bob Stanley is up and loosening up into the bullpen.
All two, nine runs, nine hits to the American League. Three runs, five hits to the national and two errors on each side. Reigns, one of the two switch hitters in the starting line-ups. Ground ball to third, Fred on the back goes into dirt to Trio. Safe, but now he has a ball to back. Steve Sacks, I'm proud to play. Here it is again. Fred wisely steps on third, one off, makes the low throw and watch what happens. Now Sacks tried to take him off and didn't make it back. And the call by Ted Henry, take another one. To slip right by the bag and I'm parted.
And never didn't get back. Good work by our camera crew. And a big play is Andre Dorsen, come to us. Dorsen has struck out and flying to right. So it sacks oversliding to double play. One and one, Andre Dorsen. Nine, three of the American League in the fifth inning. Reigns and first. I guess it s typical, Ben Erichick, I hit into a double play. Reigns and he's still on base. Yes, that kind of a night. It is, Halloween. Jim Reigns, held on by Ron Garou. Two and one and Egos Reigns. The throw by Paris, not in time yet a sidearm and he threw a sinker.
And it was a pretty good save by Trio, a Reigns is the third base. It was a foul tip held on to and Reigns even though the score are nine to three. There he goes, he gets himself the stolen base. Trio really handling a lot of low throws. Reigns at 18 consecutive steals during the regular year but he was picked off twice. So now Dorsen trying to pick him up and get a little bit closer. Two and two. He hits it down the right, be a line, foul back in amongst the customers. Here's the throw by Paris, now the ball, he backhands it and Reigns doesn't get on top of it and kind of sidearm. And it didn't have it by the scenes, you could just see it kind of sink. Well, I got a chance to, Ben. George Burns is going to sink, take me out of the ballgame and we're going to listen to some of it after this inning. Another foul out of play. George Burns, he always said he takes his lady friend's home and then he has a piano player play some songs and then the piano player takes his lady friend home.
And he said I've outlived four piano players. He is marvelous. Oh, one of my favorite, everybody's favorite. Do it, dude, I'm Dred Dorsen. Fly ball, add it on the hands and come over as wind field. And that's that they pick up a run. At the end of four and a half, it's nine to three and favor the round. Nine to three Americans, we go to the bottom of the fifth inning and several changes. St. Louis sends in Willie McGee in center field for Andre Dorsen. Blan the Hubbard takes over at second bag for Steve Sacks. Dickie Pawn, who vatted for Dauley, stays in the game at shortstop for Aussie Smith. And the new pitcher is Dave Trevecki. Now if you are keeping score of this one Gary Ward from Minnesota is up there hitting for Honeycutt. Or one, your lead off man is Glenn Hubbard. Then you have Reigns, then you have Drevecki in the number three slot. Then Oliver Murphy Schmidt and Carter remain the same McGee bats eight and Thon, who hit for the pitcher and stays in bats nine. One and one. One and two to Gary Ward.
Ward really blossomed last year. He had 28 home runs, 91 RBIs. Boy, you had a jackknife to get out of the way of that one. That's the picnic area, which is underneath really in behind the left of your wall. That's how it looks if you down there. A drive to center and McGee is going to get his feet wet if he can catch up to it and he does. So he knows soon it gets in the game he handles a fly ball. Interesting too to see Ward come up there and hit the contrast. We were talking about Winfield not playing a game in the minor leagues. Ward's meant eight years into minors before reaching the big leagues. Some guys have it so easy and some have struggled so hard.
And here's Rod Karoo. Karoo tonight, single walked intentionally, single again, each two for two. So Dave Trevecki pitching against one of the great hitters in the game, Rod Karoo. Trevecki had won only five major league ball games before this year. He was a 21 round draft pick up Pittsburgh. And here he is on the old start. How do I? I think it's amazing to wake Karoo can adjust not from day to day, but it seems like from pitch to pitch. He has all kinds of different stances just complete control of that strike zone. Ground found, just imagine he is hit 300 or better for 14 consecutive seasons.
And he's now challenging the 400 barrier. Rod Karoo. Come backer and Trevecki has it underhand Stolliver. So two down in the fifth inning. And Robin Yount coming up. One of the things about Trevecki that I like, he's not afraid to come inside to the right hand hitter with that pass ball. He saw him do it with Ward. Let's see if he does it with Yount. He'll come in and hit Kitscher. Here's Robin Yount. Struck out had a scoring fly ball and walked and he hit one up the metal jiky thon behind the bag over to Oliver. Good play. So Yount losing a base hit on a good play by Diky thon of Houston. And at the end of five. The American lady 9 runs time hit. Next Sunday at 4 p.m. Eastern daylight time at NBC Sports World.
Live coverage of a scheduled 10 round middleweight bat between WBC Super World Away champ. Thomas Motor City Cobra herds. An former light heavyweight champ Murray Sutherland. Herds stepping up in weight class Sutherland is stepping down which could prove to be a very interesting bout from Atlantic City. Also, survival of the fittest continues between the men's river bridge duel plus sports journal all next Sunday on NBC Sports World. Cal Ripken has taken over at shortstop for Robin Yount. He had a quick look at Eddie Murray at first base or Rod Caru and Bob Stanley is on the hill. Now Oliver has walked and doubled his one for one. Stanley has more innings pitched than any reliever in the major league. Little chopper wide of third bread on the front will throw Eddie Murray. One away.
Stanley has a hard sinker that he throws. He's going to not stand a palm ball in the slider. If you see somebody looking off stride it'll be that palm ball. He's been accused of maybe load one up once in a while. You know he's one of those fellows he can enter a game in any inning and finish it. In fact once this year he pitched ten innings in relief and got a no decision. In fact not until June that Stanley allowed a score or run. A runner who was on base when he entered the game. Stride. Dale Murphy struck out and singled a right to drive in Oliver in the fourth inning. A seven run third inning that's the headline so far tonight. A grand slam the first in all star history by Fred Lynn and it's nine to three American league top of the six inning one away bases out of something
about relief pitches of course Stanley won an premiere relief pitchers. They just get the ball throw strikes throw it as hard as I can for as long as I can. It's as simple as all that. Nothing fancy just get him out. That missed one and two the count of Dale Murphy. Now it all. Crowd in the 40s of course it will not be as large a crowd as the first one. They've rearranged the risky park a great deal. You know what's interesting we take two million ten and a year for granted. Three million now you know the first year and what team drew a million. It'll be the Yankees no sir Chicago Cubs when they throw a million nineteen twenty-seven.
Well I was just here yeah I just came over tonight's paid is forty three thousand eight hundred and one. I pop up Eddie Murray little handler. You know during batting practice talking about this big ballpark watching guys hit the ball close to the roof they're Ron Kittle and the home runs here. I just wonder how far Reggie Jackson's home running Detroit would have gone in this ballpark because that ball was hit by the gun over there. Here's you got to get hit over the roof when you talk about home runs over the roof at Kamiski Park. The history books tell me that there have been twenty one home runs to clear the roof in either left field or right field. The first got to do it was paid group. The last got to do it was Greg Luzinski just two weeks ago. Look at kind of a mess up at those two big guys. You can do it Johnny Myers in the front row.
He's the slaughter Charlie Garinger right in the middle. Wally Berger in the middle of your screen. How new hazard. Prince House you marker. Oh what great ball players. I was hoping in talking about those home runs keep going. There's Ed Rousch Ed Rousch ninety years old. See him right. He's just signing the autograph now and he showed up in Sammy West in the front there Al Kay line into front row next to the West. Oh does that get me excited? That's great. Good for you. We're talking about home runs and home runs over the roof where it comes to be far. If you look straight out into center field you can see the bleachers and it's like they're out of state. Tank Greenberg hit one in the bleachers. And only two men have ever hit the ball out of the roof or over the roof twice. Jimmy Fox and Ted Wally. Little number to Eddie Murray.
And that will take care of Mike Smith. So then actionally tip toes through the top of the six inning coming up Reggie Jackson's home run in Detroit in 71. Our victory you have to go back to 1971 and Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Young Reggie Jackson of the Oakland A's faces Pittsburgh's Doc Ellis. And a monumental drive off the light transformer on top of the upper deck and right field a drive that would have traveled more than 500 feet had been unstructured. List of home run hitters in this game. He's like a baseball who's who benched. Aaron Kilvall, Clemente, Frank Robinson and Reggie Jackson who helps the American League to a six four win. I go red lin to Grand Slam over on the first in all star history to really put a light to the record seven run inning. We'll lead it off and we have several changes to give you. We don't want to do it on horseback. So let's take our time. Behind the plate is Bruce Benedict of the Atlanta Braves. The San Francisco Giants.
The one-one pitch, ball two at third base from the Los Angeles Dodges Pedro Guerrero. And in right field getting a big roar when it was announced. Leon Jordan, Brown foul. There's Leon. So defensively the Nationally stacks up this way. Evans Hubbard, Thon Guerrero, Brains McGee and Durham, Benedict behind the plate and Rebecca on the mound. And it is nine three American League bottom of the six inning. Red lin when he hit his brand slammer in the third inning. It's the fourth all-star home run in his career. Boy that's right in the elevator. Grand slam home run and it's right out. One way. If you wonder the record for home runs and all-star competition for a career.
Stan Muziel for the half a dozen of courts. Yes, Stan was here and got a touch of the stomach floor. Something had to go back to St. Louis. We understand he's in the hospital feeling much better and he's probably watching it. So he's got the harmonic up playing a wall-based cannonball right now. He was there for a speedy recovery. Wilson Chuck Mengy only in a helping. Here's Jim Rice. He was there. He had a double play ball and Mike Schmidt kicked it in the first inning. But then he homered in the third and popped up in the third. So Rice is one for three. Nine three American League bottom of the six. Knocked the club right off Benedict's hand. Well, they don't really grip that club anymore like they used to. You can see that it's almost like a pair of tweezers and they've got the spuns. They cover the index finger. They've got the other club. One finger's out of there. You do everything but catch the ball with your hand. You catch it right into the webbing. I wonder if he gets good reception with that finger like an aerial out there.
I wouldn't do that with Dave Steve pitching on. The first guy ever saw it do that was Yogi. There was nothing scientific about it. He sent my finger hurt. Water one. Now, bow wide a third. Under Guerrero's glove and through and a left field. Oh, we'll see how. They're ruling. And it'll be a face at the game right bangs it just under Guerrero. Here's a good look at it Guerrero just doesn't get to it. It's past him. I think you'd ask the shortest manager what he should leave it to hotel. He had to leave something and would be his glove. And be sure to bring your fat. Here's the good look at it Guerrero. He just doesn't get to it. It's past him. First George Brett had a scoring fly ball tripled and scored and fly to left. And he drives it over the roof foul almost behind the point.
Ah, the memories had come along. You know in 1906, up in Sinclair wrote a book called The Jungle. It really gave the city a Chicago kind of a punch in the ribs, tough place. But 1906 was also the only Chicago White Sox Chicago Cup World Series. The town would really alive. He should care the White Sox one in that series four games to two. Trying to tie the past to the present. What kind of a year is it up in Sinclair now? He had a very good year thinking. All into the cow. Up in pretty good here. Like the ball up. You know talking about fuses. I'll never forget that home run he hit in Milwaukee because of the X-Traini. And I remember he said to Yogi, I'm getting tired. I want to go home. Yogi said me too. And stay and hit the home run of Sola. Brett filed it away. Of course the last all-star game played here was marked by home run in 1950.
And remember Ralph Kiner came up and hit a home run in the ninth inning to tie. And Brett Sheen Deans hit it out of the 14th and it was time to go home. And he told Jaco Common when he was in the field. He said I'm going to hit one out when he got the second base. And how about that Jaco? I didn't lie to you. One and two the count of George Brett. They crowd having a ball predominantly American League fans. And they saw the American League just take the wheels off the nationals wagon in the third inning. A seven run third. They lead nine three. And two and two. Brett a tobacco chewer. Did you chew any tobacco? Sadly I admit that I did but I don't anymore and I wish they would all stop him. I foul out of play.
I remember Don Zimmer who always chewed tobacco. Finally convinced P.E. Reese who had never chewed tobacco. He should try and then Reese had been in the big leagues a thousand years. There's a master tobacco chewer. So it's Pat Dopson. Anyway P.E. we tried to chew it. He swallowed it on the first round. I can hit it on plate and swallow it. What happened to P.E. I had to leave the game. Brett foul tips and strikes out. You know that shot a Harvey Keen? If you play trivia with him there are two things I'll remember about Harvey Keen forever. He made the last out twice in Sandy Kofak's no hitters. He was with the Giants and he hit a comeback out of the mound in 1963. And then he struck out when Sandy Kofak's pitch the perfect game against the Chicago Cup. But he still chews tobacco. That's how you talk to it tobacco chewer.
You walk away and you look like you got the measles they're talking sprays. What I hate is when they carry their own cup. That's how I'll hit foul out of play. Old one. Lance Parrot. Finish you got for Simmons. There's P.E. P.E. Reese the capital of Dodgers. He's just had me operation he was out there limping. One and one. But it's nine three American if you wonder why we're talking chewing tobacco. We're in the bottom of the sex setting. Blue Brock. And now it's strong right next time. Now bang. You know we're talking about Peru stealing home 17 times. The great Blue Brock. Can I have any time she stole home?
Oh no once. One time. Look at him. No so he scored from the first on the base hit the old timers game yesterday. He didn't get hit by a pitch. No home. It's remarkable. He led the league like 10 years ago you hit by a pitch. One and two the count the parents. And he had to drive to Shatter. Willie McGee floating over. Yeah it makes the play. So a single and a man left. Red Chained. Chits all run into 14 winning in 1950 remember. The last off star game to be played at Khmisski Park was among the most memorable. The Americans let it three two until this ninth inning home by Ralph Einer of the Pirates tied it at three. Earlier Kiner had been robbed of an extra base hit by Ted Williams with crasting to the left of the wall and broken arm. Now this is the first off star game to go extra innings. And in the 14 red chained east of the cart. Not known as a home run hitter sends this drive over the wall and left. And the national league goes on to the beat the Americans for three in 14 innings in the 1950
all star game. The American League changing the outfield. Van Oglivy will now take over and right field for Dave Winfield. In Satter Willie Wilson picking up the Fred Lennon. And the roar went up when Ron Kiddell took over and left field. Leon Durham followed by McGee and Lawn in the seventh inning. Nine three Americans smothered by Big Stanley. Good throw jam. As far as the national league is concerned then outside of pitches you have Terry Kennedy, Johnny Bench, Bill Benlock and George Henry who have not seen action. And for the American League still on the bench Cecil Cooper, Lou Whitaker,
Carlisth Lemskie, Bob Boone, Ricky Henderson, excluding pitchers. One and one to McGee. He had the longest sitting speak in the national league. 19 games, Mollie Talon to kid out in the early part of the year with injuries. One away, bases up in the seventh, nine three Americans. Interesting that he had never made it above double A in five years with the Yankees. And the Cardinals got him for Bob Sykes before last year and you know what happened after that. High chopper over the mound, charging short now, Ripken throws to Murray in time. McGee beating the throw.
McGee spent a lot of time with Cool Pop of Bell. Of course Cool is from St. Louis. Let's watch the play again. And McGee likes to feel like he reminds me of a cool pop of himself because of that time. And you can see here he had base hit on his mind all the way. Ripken throwing on one leg so he couldn't get them all over there too much. Harry and McGee beaten to a one out into your single and here's Dickie's on. No single. Big chopper back a third foul and down the line. I think one of the greatest colorful descriptions of all time will sat you'll pay. He's talking about Cool Pop of Bell speed. He was so fast and when he turned the light out he could be in bed for a bit. That is a great word picture. You know and we've been trying to do it tonight because the 50th anniversary is McGee takes
the lead one out of the seven. Ground ball to Brady. Short hops at the back goes to second for one at first not in time. So the force played five four. Talking about Statue of Page. We'll take a quick look at the play at second base and then get back to. Satchel watch trail when he gets the ball is he on the back I would say he was just in the neighborhood which is all accounts. It's a neighborhood play. To town and Glen Hubbard coming out. When Satchel paid was 59 years old. He pitched for Kansas City against the Boston Red Sides. It was last game. He gave up a base hit it was a double in the first inning to call you Stremsky. You're Stremsky is the last player to ever get ahead against Satchel Pay. Satch went three innings left the game leading one to nothing made only 28 pitches. You know who Satches managed he was he took him off the field he would sell him.
Oh for crying out loud. 101. Here's the bearded wonder. Glen Hubbard. One of the Stone Mountain boys. Looks like he came off a quarter box but he can really play the only national league second baseman hitting 300. And with a runner going it's a one hopper and eats up Ripken and everybody's safe. Oh that thing exploded. I'm going to say that Benedict is a little guy but he can I covered as a little guy but he's got a lot of power. And Bill Madlock is now going to come up and bat. We haven't gotten a report yet on it. Ball and just about. It's a Ripken's butt.
Bill Madlock. Three time batting champ. Almost got it. Ball one. And it'll be a face hit. On that hard ground ball to short. The two hits off Stanley and seven hits. And he drives it to lap however Kettle is there. Do they love it? Let's take a look at the sinker and go to Don Sun. Okay we'll take a look at that sinker right now. The way these guys were hitting tonight we were beginning to think we weren't going to have any pitches to trace for you. Bob Stanley here shows us that there's more than one way to make a fastball work for you. He has good speed, puts it in a good spot and tremendous movement. Fortunately for us he got it far enough outside to do it and cut and swing so there it is. We can trace it for you. Back to Chicago.
It is nine to three American League bottom of the seven inning. The roar is for Ron Kettle. Chicago's favorite coming on. Meanwhile a couple of changes. As the crowd solutes Kettle. Pass well Perez is the new pitches. Bill Madlock who batted for Tim Reins stayed in the game at third base and Pedro Guerrero. As gone into left field. Ron Kettle. He was in the Dodger organization. And in 1978 he had a spinal fusion. He had a pinch nerve and the neck caused by crushed vertebrae. And he was released. And last year he hit 50 home runs in the coast later. What a wonderful story. Louis Whitaker is on deck. As well Perez the guy who he wears more jewelry than Sammy Davis Jr.
I swear to you. And what it used to be he would wear it coming into the ballgame. And they objected. They said all that gold that glitter it was a distraction. And he'd stand on the mound and take ten minutes to take all the chains and gold medals off and around his neck. Maybe six or seven up. Mary Wendell said he goes away. But now you see well he's wearing one. Get it in there. Some days he came in there dressed for fucking him palace. He's a character. One and two. Round ball to the hole at short backhanded by Thorn. And he's on the infield signal. Well that makes the hometown fans happy but Mr. Thorn is putting on quite a display. He didn't get his man this time. But look how deep in the hole he goes, raises himself. He knows he has to get rid of it now. Couldn't get a whole lot on the throw but he made it all full close. That number seven slot in the American League lineup.
His four. Winfield was three for three and now Kettle gets a base head. And here is Lou Whitaker hitting Patrio. And the great young tiger will then stay in the ballgame. So they're getting him in. And on deck and that's going to be one of the great moments when he comes up. And he's going to be a little bit more than he's going to be. And on deck and that's going to be one of the great moments when he comes up. His Paul Yuskremsky. I drive in the right center. The game going back and this ball against the wall. Whitaker in the second here comes Kettle the score and Whitaker the player. The run Kettle. Singles and Lou Whitaker triples in it now.
Bring home the tournament. Cardiastensky. A standing ovation. The only player in the American League history with over 400 hold riders. 3,000 hits and they don't want it to hit yet. Let's enjoy it a little bit longer. You want to see the ball. You want to talk about this bump time. He's great. The end field is in and Yaz was going out. Hold on.
He was trying to dive in. The end field is in and Yaz was going out. Hold on. He was trying to dive in with that one long distance. 18 times at all start. Out of way. Last triple crown winner. Two more RBI's this year and 11, 1800 and half was by our way 11 players. 10 to 3 American in the seventh inning. We want to salute some people as we go on. The executive producer of NBC Sports who presented this tidy and tasty package tonight. The Michael Weisman and the coordinating producer of NBC Baseball.
The great Harry Coyle. The telecast to tonight's all stargazing and a low bow from the waist to George Lynch. Directed by Harry Coyle. Let's do all of the other. The labor is long and hard to bring it to you. Meanwhile it's two and two to Yaz. He has been equal to the occasion in his career in all star eaves. He is in 303 with one home run and five RBI. What might be the heaviest ticket sale as Whitaker is down the line from third is October the second Sunday in Boston. It's not a game with the anguish. That'll be a game between the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians. And it figures to be called the Strinsky's last game. And I'll bet you time will stand still at Fenway.
The fence will be there in great fans. 3 and 2. On the corner. Tough way to finish it. And he still gets an ovation. Well, he's good. The Yazsremsky with that great smile and Karoo grinning. There's a picture of Karoo and Yazsremsky grinning over a strikeout. Eddie Murray at the point. Ball one. One and only. You talk about ballfers and you can describe his franchise. Here's one. Eddie Murray. He was second to Robin Yowd and the MVP last year got a gold glove.
Rookie of the year in 77. Ground ball to first, fielded by Darrell Evans. Whitaker holding a third. That was a nice play by Darrell. Ball seemed to be taken tricky off and will he see some action? I'm sure he will. Elton down to the same for him. Johnny Bench. Evans played that like it was a big block. It just reached down there. What's his play? Ball is hit pretty sharply and he plays it behind him and hello there. Looking at the American League, the first man who have yet to see service, Cecil Cooper, Bob Boone and Ricky Henderson. And for the American League, we're discounting pitchers in the National League, Terry Kennedy, Johnny Bench and George Hendrick. So despite the one-sided score with that seven-run third,
they have seen a lot of stars tonight. Cal Ripkin finishing up a shortstop for Robin Young. This is what it's really all about. And they come out to see him. They want to see the stars, the marquee people, and Johnny Bench is shrimp. He put them all in. It is an exhibition. And they're getting their money's worth tonight. You don't think George Hendrick is down there holding the press conference, do you? He's on a long distance call to Steve Carlson. Look out, that's got a weapon not far enough and would it go holes a third? Cal Ripkin. The rookie of the year, along with Eddie Murray, he was the only oriole to play every game this year. Three balls and no strikes and as manager coaching the third, you don't think they might turn him loose to see if he can tear out of row seats and left field. I sure would be looking for him this way if it's his pitch.
Joel Tabelli doing quite a job over at Baltimore. Isn't he though? Three and Ode Cal. Ellie didn't have much of a chance to go after that bad one. Ball four. That'll bring off Willie Wilson. You talk about speed, you have to put this fellow Willie Wilson among the top two or three. I think he's the most productive, destructive player as far as the opposition that's in baseball. He gets on it, he makes it rugged. Inside the park home run, the chops and runs, he's exciting. You know what we're talking about? The fact he has 11 of his 14 home runs are inside the park. Can you imagine Bay Bruth hitting an inside the park home run? You know with the big tummy and the skinny legs, 714 home runs. You know, Bay Bruth had 10 inside the park home run. Where was your friend, Grand Canyon?
Must have been all downhill. Henry Aaron hit 755 home runs. You know how many home runs inside the park he had? No, you got it. No, none. Zip, Navi. And there's one drilled into the right field corner of a Wilson. That gets Whitaker home and stopping at third is Ripken. He's 113 American League. Going to game like this, you got to keep digging. I knew when you get the roots home run inside the park you know you're shoveling. It comes wide out there. Did you read out the Scamria? No. By the way, the record for most clubs, one club for most runs. The American League in 1946 scored 12, but they have 11 so far and run as a second and third.
Haswell has gone and there's Sigen at Kymesky. Yes, Eorasco. Four and four, but Eorasco think it gets you 1.3. And he'll be pitching to Ben Oglevy. Oglevy, the right fielder. Let's see, Kendrick and Bench and then you get to LaVelle, Smith and Valenzuela. They're trying to get them all in. Eorasco came to the match from Minnesota, but Jerry Kuzlin.
Oglevy is one of those hitters and keeps that bat busy as we take a look at Willie Wilson, who's down at second base, Ripken's on at third. It's almost like Oglevy, the battery. It's not a self-starting bat. He's got to get it cranked up, pump the handle. He's got a prime, watch him get it going. He's going to the count of Ben Oglevy. Oglevy, you might remember, he just hit a grand slam home run Monday at Cleveland and his first at bat when they said he was going to replace Jackson with that kind of a swing. Out of the way. Interesting. Oglevy has only seven home runs.
Three up in one game against Boston, but he has three home run games in his career. It's not only the most for any active player. It's just one behind Lou Garry's all time record. The rest of the cup is being that close to a hitter like Garry, but he isn't at the department. Johnny Myers, who's here taking in the Worgan, he holds the all-time record. He had six three home run games and you see Lee Smith and Steve Rogers in the nationally bullpen. I hope that Smith comes in. You'll see some smoke. He really fires it both. One and two. I've come flying down the right field. I'm curling foul. Evans over to the tarp and can't make it. Almost, but not quite. I hope that Harry Wendelstead had a good view. They can have the luck. Evans gives it a good chase. He knows exactly where he is.
He kind of gets tripped up here and sees it that tarp and over he goes and he has a great chase. The man was giving it a chase too. Look at the ball. And Harry Wendelstead right there to see it roll. Good on fire. He sure is. Ogleby got jammed so he had to get another bat. He's one of three players in Brewer history who has tied Reggie Jackson to the American League of Home Run title. George Scott tied Jackson in 75. Ogleby did it. 82. Luke Gorman-Thomas did it. Down he goes. However, the American League heads to Moore and at the end of 7-11 runs 13 hits to the American 3-run 7 hits to the mansion. As we move to the eighth inning, Ricky Henderson takes over in left field and Ron Kettle moves over to right, which is kind of nice.
The fans can cheer him. It's like half time at football just when the other team is going to score on the goal line. They move you around. Matt Young takes over on the mound. Johnny Finch will now make an appearance. We saw a car Gisgrinsky hit for Bob Stanley and strike out. And in a moment now we'll see what's in store for Ben. So the people left Cooper and Boone for the American League. And in the national league, Kennedy and Hendrick excluding pitchers. Johnny Bench saying goodbye. Like Gisgrinsky, he gets a standing ovation. And he has credentials you could read for an hour.
You know, it's interesting to see these two calling it a career. Because of free agent economics. High pop fly on the left side. Brett and Ripken and it'll be Ripken. Almost out of our guest on there. I was thinking though that you know Bench and Gisgrinsky could be. They might be the last great players to spend their entire careers with one team. And we might be saying goodbye tonight to both of them. Right. You don't see that too often. Oh, Darryl Evans coming out. Darryl Evans. He's been picking it as they say very well with that glove at first. He's kind of remarkable in the sense that this is his second all-star game. What's remarkable is 10 years apart.
You don't imagine a guy that would come back 10 years later. But here he is. He was in the all-star game in Kansas City of 73. That was the year he had 41 home runs. Aaron and Dave Johnson each had 40 that year. Matt Yon, certainly one of the outstanding Yon coaches in the American League. What do you hear his name a lot? Evans has really become a tough hitter again. He talks about that upper body strength. He fills it up over the winter with weights, free weights, and he really has been whacking the ball. He's got one more hit.
He's out of the way. 11 runs, 13 hits and two errors for the American League. Three runs, seven hits, two errors for the nationally. The big story was the third inning. The American League scored a record seven times. And Fred Lynn hit the first grand slam in all-star history. He's got seven slashing on the left center field. Dining roll and catch by Wilson. Oh, play by Willie. Telling him he's a good ball player. Here he blows with great speed. He holds on to it. Interesting thing about that, kids. Usually he's got to drive the backhand. He's caught it four times now, so I guess he's got to just use your enemy. He's got it.
Two down. Oh, Willie Wilson coming up with a defensive gem of the night and a Pedro Guerrero who took over for Mike Smith a third and then went on out into left field who's coming up. Strike, one on one. Say Willie and center field, you know, difference in the great play. You don't think of Willie Wilson. You think of Willie Bay? I saw so many great plays by him. I think my lucky stars I was able to see him play at his best. Mad Young working on Pedro Guerrero, one ball, one strike in the eighth inning, 11 to three. Favorite the American League. So the nationals 11 consecutive winning streak got ready to go down the drain. It'll be interesting to see the courts come out of this game.
We were ready. We knew we were going to do it. And then Quizan Berry who will say, caught it's cheese. That's right. Also said, nationally, who's using the left. Left side of the brain and that's why. One and two. Now back. Guerrero last year was third in the national league's most valuable play award. Dale Murphy won it. Lonnie Smith was second. And then Pete, as they call it. One and two. Got him looking. The Guerrero is caught looking. Well, we saw Willie Wilson make that sensational play. Let's turn the clock back and look at 24. Fuck Willie Mays. Willie Mays was among the most heroic players in all star history. Just asked the Yankees whitey for in 24 mid-summer appearances. The giant star hit over 300 and dealt it three home runs.
In the field. Well, Willie was stylish as always. Willie Mays say head. I. You think you guys back there in Chicago were digging for something you talk about. You should see us back here in New York looking for good pitches. Well, Matt Young provided us with a perfect one here. And one that I found in the America league since I've been over here to be thrown a lot. We call it a back door slider. He throws it almost like a spiral on a football. Starts it off off the plate. Breaks it over the corner for Pete Guerrero. It looks outside. Breaks over like a curve ball. And what can you do? He can't take it. He can't swing at it. Back to you guys. Back door slider. By the way, the MVP in tonight's game will also be the NBC Miller High Life Player of the Game. Miller High Life will be happy to present a check for $1,000 for the Special Olympics in his name. A player to be announced later on. Well, the big guy is out on the hill. Six feet, six, two hundred and thirty five pounds standing out like a beacon near in Chicago's
Commis B. Park. Lee Smith. He's got to be about an eight on his size of a graph to me. Uh, he's the one who said that he had a dream last night that he was going to strike out Dave Winfield in the game tonight. But of course, Winfield's long gone so he can do his best with George Brett Lam's parish in Ron Kittle ball. Cecil Cooper is out on deck. So that means we will have seen him all as far as except Bob Boone in the American League. He's got a pair like that in the clubhouse up at.
He gets confused which is for the left and which is for the right. I'd say that's candy endorsements a bit too far. They're on a different shoes. The baddest buttons. It's called a split account. I see. Well, you know, since in any year they were going in arbitration. They wanted to wear special shoes so they could get some money and I don't know the outcome on it. It's going arbitration. Still in the shoe box. It is 11 to 3 American League here in the eighth inning. Big Lee Smith 66 to 35. He's got to have a birthday on Monday Tuesday Wednesday. Look at that earn run average 1.3. Bound away. I wish we had a gun on his vent. He is really throwing hard. Lee Smith threw a wild pitch that hit in front of the plate and bounced into the wriggly field stands. That's throwing pretty hard.
Three and two. Ground ball up the middle but there's Hubbard and he can't backhand. And Brett will make a turn go for two. The throw in the thaw and he's in there. What X-Hus in 11 to 3. That's why you like George Brent so much. It's not just his fat Hubbard. It looked like he was going to be able to backhand this fall. It goes under him. He just didn't get it and he stays right with it. You see him chasing to the outfield and he's watching to see what happens to Brett. But George, he doesn't get any help. The coach he did it on his own. There's the slide and he's safe. Good husband boy. So he have not yet flashed whether it was a hit or an arrow. But apparently those two shoes helped. Come on, lefty, come on, righty. And now here's Cecil Cooper. The only Bob Boone yet to get in there. And it will be ruled a double.
A double for Brent. The George has had a double, a triple, and a scoring fly ball. And here's Cooper. You know, since last July 8th, that means 66 appearances. Lee Smith has allowed two runs in an appearance only twice. He's never allowed three. He just will not allow that. It is. 11 to three American League in the eighth inning. The Cooper hitting for parage. By the way, the American League. Now with 14 hits.
That's the most since an action league at 14 hits back in 1954. So Cooper hits for parage and Bob Boone will go behind the plate. And then all of the American Lakers will have gotten in the game. Excluding pitches. Bound away. Harvey Keane. Along with a very happy American League team that has pounded the national league. 11 to three. Snapping an 11 game losing streak. And snapping the absolute domination. 24 out of the last 26. And that's lined on the official. The British to third and they will hold him in the throw.
It's over Madlock's head. And Benedict. And now here comes Ron Killow. And Ron Killow had the infield signal to shortstop in the seventh inning. And with Ron as it first and third. And two great first, red and third. Here's Kiddell. And after Kiddell comes Blue Whitaker.
4-1. Evans Hubbard, Pawn, Madlock, Guerrero, McGee, and Durham defensively. And there's Kiddell Country. And Lepeo. And it gets away from Benedict and down a second base goes Cooper. He just hand-cuffed him. Bruce didn't get a chance to shift on the ball. I would think it would be a pass ball. He just throws so hard. He's one of the tough things when you've never caught a pitcher. He's under suppression. And it's all start game. Watch the pitch. It doesn't. It just hand-cuffed. He didn't move and hit him right in the heel. And under advances pass ball. Please, I think. Sorry to call it. 2-1. The count. 11-3. American League. Bottom of the end. Infield is up.
3-0. It'll be a pass ball, Joe. 2-1. The count. Harry Wendelstead. Taking a little heat. The boy he would love to bust one. What makes it great is to cross down rivalry. The cup versus the socks. Boy, to come back from a spinal fuse. And playing the big leagues. You really have to be thrilled for it. Billy Pierce gets a lot of credit for it. Doing two. Go down goes Kettle. At least fifth. Punches him out. And now the battle will be a little Whitaker. Whitaker. Whitaker. I think he's going to have to do it. He's going to have to do it.
He's going to have to do it. He's going to have to do it. He's going to have to do it. Whitaker tripled in the seventh inning. The American League now 11 runs 15 hits. The record. The 54 American League club hits 17 hits. It's been a record. Seven run third inning. And the American League has also had the first grand slam home run in ball star history that by Fred Lynn. So it has been quite a night. Bowed away. Bowed away. Oh and one to count to Lou Whitaker. On deck.
Ricky Henderson. There he is. High twisting foul out of play down the left field line and carries upstairs. Each side scored in the first inning. The American League got a run in the second to lead two to one. Then they scored seven into third and broke the game wide open. It's now 11-3 American League bottom of the eighth one out. But the end field up and run as it's second and third Cooper and Brett. High fly ball to left field Guerrero going back on the track in the corner back in and drafted it's a fair ball. In comes Brett Cooper stops it third and it is 12 to three American League.
So Guerrero on outfielder who converted to third base goes in the outfield in the all star game and drop one. And that's exactly what he did. You'll see it. He's got a beat on it. Looks like he's going to make an easy play out of whoops. Getting right to middle of the club. He bumped his head as he went in there. Although it's added. I tell you unpredictable. Goblins are out then. It's a little bit like a fat man's picnic. That's what it is. Put a keg of beer at first, keg of beer at third, skins against the shirts and let's have some fun. It's a sacrifice blind so no ad ban and RBI and an error. I've got the jackpot didn't I? Got everything but the keys to the city. Here's Ricky Henderson ball one. With 12 runs at ties the record in the all star in 1946, the American League scored 12.
Would you like to have a baseball clinic and say well we're going to show you young people the all star game. This game played by the best in baseball with what they saw. Looks like something that the marks brothers would be managing. Ricky Henderson is really an oddity. He is the only all star as you can see commission acute might be calling to what he thinks he's doing calling for an editor. Talk to each other. Oh, that's a short distance call. That's right. Hello, commissioner. Yes, don't turn around. But Ricky Henderson bats right handed and throws left handed. And that is odd. You see a lot of left handed throwers who bat right handed. But very rarely do you see this combination. You don't think it's President Reagan going to congratulate the winning team? No. It might be a George Bushball tonight.
He played first base for Yale. You can understand this kind of a game. 12 to 3 American League. It's out of like a busted bad ground ball to thawed over to Darryl Evans. Scoring is Cooper. So Henderson grounds out but he gets a run batted in. And it is now 13 to 3. It's a new record for all star competition. I use that word competition advice. Okay. Okay. And let's see. 16 runs. 22 hits. Five errors. And here's Eddie Murray. So they have plenty of highlights. Whoa. Ah, the highlights. Tillman 11. So Blue Woodenker's second base, ground ball, backhanded by Evans, overhand stood big Lee coming over.
It's like crossing the ball to the Colossus of Rhodes on the move. And they finally get the out. So head to the eighth inning. And in this little gem through eight innings, American League 13 nationally three. Sure, Don. Women on the catcher for a pass. Oh, yeah, all right. Shootout. There is Bob Boone who becomes the last of the American Lakers to get in the game other than pitchers. And on the mound Dan Quizz and Barry. This telecast is presented by the majority of Major League Baseball and may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form without the expressed written consent of Major League Baseball. I think this way you could do it out of written consent. There was somebody on the phone with the commissioners.
That's right. I get written consent. Okay. We won't fool around with it. There may be some people want to retransmit this one. Well, here's Bruce Benedict. He's all smiles. He's finishing up behind the plate. Terry Kennedy and George Hendrick are the only two national leagueers other than pitchers and all of the American Lakers have not been in it. And there's a line drive in the right field face at Preventer Day. Kimmel gets the ball back in. Don't forget next Saturday 2 p.m. Eastern daylight time 30 Rock. The latest news in the world is sports then in California. You'll travel to Boston to meet the Red Sox or the walkie brewers play the Chicago White Sox. Check your local listings to keep in your area on the home of baseball and DC sports. Time out Terry Kennedy who had been down in the bullpen as making that overnight hike to the dugout.
Here he comes. And the last of the Mohicans along with his George Hendrick. Leon Durham. He's trying. That's some delivery by Klaisenberg. I was in Detroit for a trotty-carrying gear of air and the Eldon Hawker was there and I mentioned to he too like that. Eldon Hawker was his submarine. That's his right. Oh and two. Winsonberg throws a sinker because he throws that way. He has a rising breaking ball. It's like a big roundhouse back in the lead to curveball. And he throws him that ball. You know what Winsonberg says? He says the last time the American lead won an all-star game. He was working in a fish restaurant in Southern California. That's what he says. I maybe. He does say strange things. He's a perfect relief man. Nothing faces him.
Oh Leon Durham strikes out against Winsonberg. He wasn't at something. And the one that they have trouble hitting. Look at this delivery. It's the knuckleball. Here it is with two strikes. And he just runs over it. And now here is Willie McGee hitting on the number eight slot with Dicky Thon batting nine. One out in the ninth bounce your foul. It's 13 to three American lead. Friends the 1983 all-star game has been brought to you by Miller Highlight, the best beer for the best time of the day. Welcome to Miller Time. By Ford and your Ford dealer have you driven a Ford lately? By Sharp Electronics Corporation from Sharp Mines, come Sharp products and by Gillette Atreuser, the twin blade razor that tibits for a close comfortable shade. High fly ball into right center field. Wilson and Kiddell and it will be Wilson.
Though the National League now down to its last hour, Dicky Thon will be the batter. Dicky Thon had a base hit back in the fifth inning, but the ball game was just about all over. By that time, thanks to the seven run bird and it fouled away. So in essence, then the American League is on a snap and 11 game losing streak. They had lost 24 out of 26 and we'll go back to the opening remarks if you look at Benedict at first. The American League had won only one all-star game since Kennedy was president, since Pete Rose had broken into the major leagues, since a Washington Senator was on the American League team Frank Howard.
Though it has been a long time, and it has arrived. Big chopper to third, Brent goes down to second, and this one is history. The totals again for hardy team, and it is McClure's, like you know, like a 13 runs, 15 hits and two airs, and then actually three runs, eight hits and three airs. And the lights of Kamiski Park, we're at all again in 1933, China a little brighter tonight, because the home of the American League has come up on top. We'll be right back. Friends, the MVP in tonight's game will be the NBC Miller Highlight Player of the game, and that will be Fred Lynn, whose grand slammer in the third inning, the first in all-star history. The Miller Highlight, happy to present a check for $1,000
to the special Olympics in the name of Fred Lynn. What a tremendous thrill for him. That was for Fred Lynn, as you see him rounding the faces, and he really reacted to it, and he can hardly blame him. Jim Rice had in the home run that same minute a lowline drive, as we look at Lee McFale, and McFale has to be a happy man, Dick Bumper, who's in charge of the farmland. Well, you know, next Saturday, our game of the week coverage continues with the star-studded California Angels and Mr. Fred Lynn at the boycott, or the Milwaukee Brewers here at Kermiske Park against the White Sun. Check your local listings, and now stay tuned for the tonight's show, starring Johnny Carson, following local news, except on the West Coast, and most mountain times on station where it will be seen at a regular time. But Joe Garajola, this has been Scully, wishing you a very, very pleasant good evening, on the 50th anniversary, from Kermiske Park, where the American League beat the National League,
hurt the American League, and the National League, 13-3.
