About this episode
LOVE MURDER is made possible by:
“You know, the drawer organization that comes over you in the fall. I got rid of every pair of socks because they were so worn out, so gross, I don't like wearing them, but guess what stayed? My bomba socks are the only ones that made the cut.”From the transcript
Human remains found in the crawlspace of a Big Bear Lake home in 2020 are identified as Jill Maiorca, who went missing in 2007, and her former husband is charged with first-degree murder. In Pennsylvania, a grand jury hears from previously reluctant witnesses, and the man accused of raping and murdering 20-year-old Sabrina Kahler in 2002 is taken into custody. Both arrests came on the same day.
Current Affairs is Love Murder's shorter show about the cases of love gone fatally wrong that are in the news right now.

Our show about the cases of love gone fatally wrong that are in the news right now. If this is your first love murder episode, two back in on Wednesdays for our main full length deep dive episodes. This week we have two cold cases, one from Southern California and one from the shore of Lake Erie in Pennsylvania. The killings happened four years apart and investigators made both arrests on the same day, Monday, September 21st. We start in Big Bear Lake California at about 1112 on the morning of Wednesday, October 28th, 2020. Someone at a home in the 39,000 block of forest road made a suspicious discovery in the crawl space under the house and called the Sheriff's Department for help. Deputies from the Big Bear Sheriff's Station and personnel from
the Big Bear Fire Department responded and found unidentified human remains beneath the residents. Detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department homicide detail took over the investigation in an autopsy determined that the manner of death was homicide. DNA testing did not reveal who the victim was and despite continued investigative efforts, the case stayed unsolved. In 2023, the Sheriff's cold case homicide team took over and submitted the remains for additional investigative DNA analysis. That analysis identified the remains of Jill Mayorka, a 29 year old woman who had been reported missing from Big Bear Lake in 2007. Evidence developed during the investigation indicates Jill was murdered in November 2006 and that her remains were concealed beneath the forest road home without the homeowner's knowledge. Whoa, that is a long time. Such a long time. Through continued investigation, detectives identified a suspect, Jill's former husband, Jeff Mayorka. On Monday, September 21st, Jeff, now 53 and still arrested a big bear,
was arrested and taken into custody without incident. He was booked into the Big Bear jail on a murder charge under California penal code section 187a. The next day, he was formally charged with first degree murder and according to a felony complaint obtained by people, prosecutors believed a knife was used in the killing. Jeff has not yet been arraigned and the Sheriff's Department says the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about Jill's disappearance or murder is asked to contact Detective Malcolm Page or Sergeant Justin Guiles of the homicide detail at 909-890 499-16 and we will put that in the show notes as well. Collars who want to remain anonymous can call or text report to WeTip at 844-909-3006. Our second case goes back to June 2002 in Eerie County, Pennsylvania, where 20-year-olds Sabrina Collar disappeared from her home and was never seen again. She was declared dead in 2009 according to CBS News but no one was arrested.
The case moved forward after the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Colquay section received a referral to review it which led to a grand jury. That grand jury, her testimony from key associates of the man now charged, David Heck. According to the investigation, Heck showed up as the bring this house on the morning of June 24, 2002 and invited her to go swimming. She agreed since he was her boyfriend's cousin and she had hung out with him many times before. The two went to Eglie Park near the Lake Eerie Shore where they ran into Heck's ex-girlfriend. Days later, Heck had been arrested after being accused of assaulting that ex-girlfriend and he was on probation at the time of Sabrina's death. They left the park, stopped in ice cream shop and drove to a heavily wooded area. Prosecutors alleged Heck raped and killed Sabrina there and a fisherman testified the hearing a blood-curdling scream. Douglas Hame testified that Heck called him afterward and asked for help moving and burying Sabrina's body at the elk creek access. Another friend, Terry Kellerman, said Heck was open about murdering a girl and a cellmate said
he had heard Heck's story of raping and murdering a girl. On Monday, September 21, Heck now 50 was charged with Sabrina's rape and murder and taken into custody late that night at his home in Indiana. Attorney General Dave Sunde alleged that testimony from previously reluctant witnesses led to a single conclusion that Heck raped and murdered Sabrina Collar 24 years ago. Because of flooding and changes to the terrain, efforts to recover Sabrina's body from where she was buried have so far been unsuccessful. It's not a day of celebration as we have not yet brought Sabrina home. Sunde said, and the search is ongoing. I'm Jessie Prey and I'm Andy Cassette signing off for Love Murder Current Affairs.
