We thought we were done with us in August, but now here we are for another episode of The Early Wedge and it is time for the President's Cup. So we have the regular cast back for a special September episode. Let's bring them in. We have Patrick. We have Sia. We have Sobel. A lot to talk about. Patrick, as always, I start with you. The President's Cup seems like kind of a waste of time. Seriously, to blow out and I have Statsbury does. Hell of a way to start a show, EC. Patrick, when you look at the rocks. You should care about this event, but it's a waste of time. Well, no, you can bet on it. It's great. But here's the thing. It's like you're talking about a pro football team against a college football team is how I look at these rosters. Am I wrong? You are wrong. I think you should give some more respect to some of these guys on the international team. I mean, they're still professional golfers, still high quality players. I don't think you're wrong where, look, it plays second fiddle to the rider cup. There's no doubt about that. I would

3:21be pretty surprised if Brian Rolab doesn't sit down after this year if it's another blowout and think of ways to get creative with this knowing that it's still a profitable tournament in a vent for them, but to inject a bit more juice into it. So I think you're right, Anne, wrong at the same time. Sobel, what can we do to expand the rosters to make this more fair? Well, it's a good question. Is the expansion to make it more fair or is it to make it more entertaining? I've heard the mixed gender event for over a decade now. And look, the PGA tour is not going to seed control of half of their event and cut out half the players who play on the PGA tour. I mean, let's look at this from a logistics standpoint. Like, yeah, okay, it might make it fairer because there are a whole bunch of really good players. But think about the what about is him. Look, I'm going to get myself canceled for this. But if we said, you know what, make the soulheim cup a lot better. Men, if we put Scotty Sheffler against worry back when we're in the soulheim

4:23cup, it would be such a better people lose their minds. I go, that's not what the event is. That's how I feel about this. So I don't like the mixed gender thing. I've thought about an idea where if you play if you're an American who plays the writer cup the previous year, you're not eligible for the president's cup. But again, why would the PGA tour want to say, hey, we're going to have a big event, but we're going to dismiss six or eight of our best players and not let them play. That doesn't seem to make sense from their perspective. So again, I say this all the time, but you can't look at things just from the perspective of a guy sitting on his couch who wants things more entertaining for yourself. You have to look at it from the perspective of everybody involved the rights holders, the players themselves, the sponsors, the PGA tour, and what's good for them as well. All right. See, you are always the voice of reason. How do we fix this thing? I don't know. I mean, I don't really have any answers here. I kind of agree. It does feel like a little Michigan western Michigan-ish, but we do know western Michigan beat Michigan just three

5:23weeks ago. So there is some potential, you know, Sunday scary that might happen, but I'm not the guy to ask in terms of how to fix it. To me, if there's any good betting opportunities, that's great. And if there's any potential drama, that's great too, and we can't absolutely rule that out. So a guy that's able to. Yeah. One more thing. I will say it's kind of weird. We talk about the discrepancy between the two teams. USA is one 10 and a row, 13, one and one all time. We talk about things in terms of betting perspective on the show all the time. Scotty Schifler was the favorite every time he played. We play 18, 20 events this year. He won three of them. We see and go up the favorites often don't win. It happens a lot more than it does that a favorite doesn't win. The fact that the US is won so much. It's not just that they're a better team. There's something to it. And I can't explain it. Scotty was asked about it today. He didn't seem to have a great answer to it, but it's not just an engulf putting together a better team than the other guys often doesn't work out the way you think it's going to. Well, we have no Scotty Schifler picks on this show. I just

6:25cheated and looked ahead. So if you're looking for a Scotty bet, you're in the wrong place, but we have some great picks. That's a weekend bet on this. And it's a way to bet golf. We all love that it's a way to make some money. And we have some really interesting picks for you. So let's start up. So I guess you're the one storyline. Well, they're I mean, seriously, do you is there any possible way? There's any drama on Sunday. Yeah, there certainly is. And I wouldn't discredit the fact that the international go out there back against the lot. The one thing that's a little different about this international team. We hear it every two years. The captain goes, oh, these guys are, you know, there's lots of gatheredness, there's a lot of camaraderie. These guys like each other. This one has sort of a Noah's Ark kind of feel to it. Hadecki Matsuyama is buddies with the oh, Hatsatsune who plays on who's from Japan. And they play a lot of practice rounds and hang out together. Corey Conner's and Nick Taylor probably played more golf together than anybody on the PGA tour over the years. You've got Adam Scott Minnulli. It feels like there's kind of some natural pairings amongst them. And I think that could help. That said, I heard a good story the other day.

7:25This goes back to 2017 at Liberty National where I was there at the US team absolutely trounce the international's. There was a moment on Saturday afternoon where if this butt goes in, that butt goes in. The US gets to 15 and a half points and it's over. It's clenched before we get to Sunday. And one of my colleagues told me this story. You have to be staying next to Fred Couples who was an assistant captain this that year and said, you know, that butt goes in, that butt goes in. This is over and Fred goes, oh my god, we can't have that happen. I mean, Fred was rooting against his team at that point just so there was some sort of drama something to play for on Sunday. Well, it's one thing with the Ryder Cup. And you see that everybody talks, the Ryder Cup is so great because the teams are really even. Europe has an unbelievable lineup of no-bet list people. And the US, I mean, it's true. They kind of do and we'll talk about them later on. And the US has an incredible lineup. And you look at this, this, this international lineup and I'm going, there's nothing here. But we are going to try to make you some money. So let's start with the highest, the top US point score and Patrick, a guy that is guaranteed to be on the no-bet list in

8:322027 is who you and see. All right. It's true. You and see your picking him. Why are we going to Sam Burns as the top US score? We got him at eight and a half to one. I think that's a great price on someone who is very likely to play five times. You could say maybe he plays with Scottie Sheffler again. I'm not sure if that's going to happen. Didn't happen at the Ryder Cup. They were paired together today. Maybe they roll it out for four balls. But you have someone who is coming off the best statistical season of his career. He's transformed into a super complete player. And he's just a heck of a putter. He was the only player on the US team to not lose a match in 2024 with three oh and one. And a lot of his bad results, if you look at his win loss columns, it comes from being paired with Sheffler in 2022. And Sheffler was shankin balls at Quail Hollow. And just was not the Scotty Sheffler that we know this day and age. So I think you're getting a little bit of a bargain here for an American guy that's going to trot out every session at eight

9:34and a half to one. And by the way, let me point this out before we go any further. Your article on CBS Sports dot com and sobels at Bette MGM are really helpful in doing research for this show. You laid out all of the records in the president's cup for each member of both teams. I thought that was really good to see kind of and you did it by, you know, four balls, four sums and singles and total. So I thought that was really cool. I just want to point that out. First of all, now you tell me about Patrick and and sobels articles. I could have used that before the show with that said, this is a lot of this is process of elimination, which makes it really easy. There's only six to choose from here. And if you make the decision, well, you're not going to choose Scotty and we treat that almost like a regular tournament where the odds are perhaps too short. And you can make the argument, maybe Scotty and these types of events isn't the same Scotty. But so once you get past that, you could adjust evaluate and try to cross off everybody else. I mean, I think windum Clark is really interesting because he profiles to me

10:38just like Sam Burns, a guy whose dog factor is probably a 10 out of 10, a guy who can close with the putter. But Sam burns certainly probably over the year in better form than, than windum Clark. I actually, I don't know that I could say certainly, but those two would be the two I'm choosing from. Henley and Colin Moore, Kawa, Henley might, we might see him with Scotty. So, you know, maybe that raises his profile a little bit, but it was pretty easy to just cross off everybody, but Sam Burns and then perhaps windum Clark. But I went with Sam Burns at 8 and 1. So, Chris Goddard, at 14 to 1 is a really good price, but do you think he'll play enough to really to get, you know, at least four points? Or is he going to have to go four and a? Yeah, no, look, based on the format of this, I think that you're good players. So you guys who aren't the bottom line are getting at least four matches. If you're playing well, if you're betting a guy to be the top point score, you assume that he's playing well. And if he's playing well, if he gets to 3 and 0, you're going to keep him out there. And I think he gets to five matches. So I'm not too worried about that. As you'll see with my international top score

11:41pick as well. I'm taking a couple of guys who will chip on their shoulder, guys who are fiery type players. I'm starting with Goddard up here. If you recall, was it three or four weeks ago, Brandt Stenicker named his team the first mention for Captain's pick. And this was not alphabetical order. This was intentional. Was Chris Goddard up? You joined them on the live feed and Goddard up almost immediately essentially brought up his grudge of not making the Ryder Cup team and go to Beth Page last year. I thought he would have been a pretty good asset for that team. I like it him to Cameron Young, who played on that team a year ago and might have been the lone bright spot for the US. I think Chris Goddard up has a lot of really good things going for him. And number one might be the fact that like I said, it's got a little chip on his shoulder. A lot of these guys have been there, done that. They played these things. I think Goddard up is going to get the first T smash it and keep going from there. So I like him this week a lot. I was very surprised that I didn't see a came young from from either of the any of the three of you here because the way he played obviously this season, you know, won the players, you know, won other big events there.

12:44I thought he would be a guy that would be a mention. But Wyndham Clark won three times in the since the end of May and had six top five finishes. I'm going to split my bet here. Go on Wyndham Clark at plus 1175 on half of my bet and then the other half Colin Moracawa plus 1600. Couple guys out on the no bet list this year. So they will not be next year obviously. Since the aggressive nature could be beneficial for Wyndham Clark in this four ball format where he's just, you know, can fire darts and take some chances if he's in the middle of fairway, especially. He was just lights out and especially the putter as well from mid May on. And Moracawa's foreign one lifetime thanks to Patrick's article in four balls, including the rider cup. And I think both play four sessions. So we hope for one to run the table at double digit odds and and cash a ticket. So that's the way I look at it split in my bet. Now on the international side, we're going with four different golfers. I think go ahead Patrick. Yeah. Are you concerned that they will play together? Is that a pro or con in your book? I think it's great because they're both going to it's like

13:47can't lay in Zander, Zander Schoffley. They're going to win most of the time. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Do you think they will? Do you think those two will be paired together? I do. Oh, good. Then there'll be three and oh. And then we'll see him in singles. And hopefully one of them wins and I get four and oh, perfect. I love the dollar number. It's just the back. It's the back, you know, his back is fine. September is back. It's got to be fine. He like still brings it up randomly. That's not great. We don't love hearing that. Okay. We all disagree on the international point score. Patrick, Ryan Fox, after winning the Open Championship, they really do a lot. He hasn't, he almost got it last week. I mean, before that he was stunk. He's stunk in the play, the PGA to replace. He gets up for the big ones. And look, the international team, their path to victory is much more narrow than the USD. I'm not breaking news there. And I think someone like Fox is going to have to be a major contributor for them to even sniff a potential upset here. So I'm going to take him at 15 to one. The guy's playing good golf. We saw it last week at the BMW PGA. He had a

14:50legitimate chance to win that golf tournament on Sunday. He was paired Paul Hudawannick had some of the parents today. Seems like he might draw Adam Scott for some of that as well. I love that with the way Adam Scott is playing. Just finished runner up hasn't finished outside the top 20 since the sky to show up. And so I'll take a chance on the champion golf for the year at a big number of 15 to one on this international team. So, well, Patrick makes a compelling point for Ryan Fox. But Minwule obviously not 15 to one nine to one aggressive player. And you like to see that in these types of formats. Absolutely. Love and aggressive player. And I mentioned Chris Goddard having a little chip on his shoulder two years ago. Now I get it. They were at Royal Montreal in Canada. Taylor Pendrith is a Canadian. Mike Weir was the captain. He's Canadian. Hey, let's go, you know, from the great white North and let's cheer on our guys. That said, Pendrith played five matches. Minwule played in the second match off on Thursday morning in four balls. Played with Adam Scott. They lost one down. They put up a good fight against Moracawa and Saith Thiagol. He did not play

15:51on Friday in four sums. Okay, that's fine. Didn't play Saturday at all in either session. And then went out Sunday and got a half point against Wyndham Clark. Minwule, I haven't talked to him about it, but I would almost guarantee as a really bad taste in his mouth of not only not really getting a chance to show what he had at Royal Montreal two years ago. I think he's another guy that cannot wait to get to the first tee. And it's absolutely going to start smashing. I think Minwule makes for a good play. And look, I like sun J. M this week. And Patrick was talking about pairings would not be surprised to see Minwule and sun J together. Couple of Dr. Chappinsky's could be really good around those greens. See, yeah, this in terms of when you look at excitement of a player in for this event, Tom Kim brings it. He brings it for, you know, TGL, which, you know, Patrick, when he's going down to Palm Beach, you get to watch Tom Kim go nuts on the on the artificial green. Tom Sim, there you go. But this is an event that feels like it's built for Tom Kim and you have made eight to one.

16:52Yeah, I kind of agree. And I think the international squad's going to certainly choose him among maybe one or two other guys to kind of rally around in Tom Kim's track record is okay when it comes to these events. But what I really love about him is how he's been playing since since winning, he's been playing really well. So I don't really see any let down from him. Love the ball striking specifically the approach play. The putter can come and go. But when you're talking about putting and you're talking about variance and things of that nature, I think in again, I'm making some inferences here. But if he's going to get up for an event like this, if he's going to have his team rally around him, I could absolutely see him, you know, having the good variance when it comes to the putter. I think eight to one's a really fair number of considering who he's up against. Guys, you have great picks. Can't argue with any of the three of them, but I have the winner here. This guy was by far the best player on the PGA tour this season of the international team. Now see who came here at 11 top 10s. He was first in a stroke scheme approach on tour in fifth fifth in stroke scheme total. I mean, only two. He's one of only two international team players

17:56with a winning record in this event. And Jeff Oglevy would be nuts if he didn't play him in all five sessions. So I think this number and I got this one at Ben and GM. That's the best number that I saw for C. Wu Kim. I think this is a great number on the favorite here. I know it's Chucky. I know these guys made compelling arguments. But this guy was the best player by far of anybody on this team. To me, he's going to play all five. I can't go against it. Okay. I'm going to offer a dissenting opinion. I'm going to give you a reason to see it. All right. I agree. C. Wu Kim is the best player on that team and he should be the guy with the lowest odds. That said, I would not be surprised because remember at the president's cup, you can match players against each other. The captains sit face to face and they say, okay, I'll throw out this guy now. I'll throw out that guy. Unlike the writer cup where you just write him down and they match him up draw a line across. I would not be surprised to see C. Wu Kim get big brother, even though he's a year older. Scotty Sheffler in a few matches just because Scotty knows C. Wu cannot beat him and Scotty will go to Brands Nettaker and go, keep giving me C. Wu.

18:58It's hilarious. I'm going to keep beating him and C. Wu is not going to know what to do. He's going to be so frustrated. That might be the reason why I fain't see Wu this one. I'm going to give a dissenting opinion to the dissenting opinion. C. Wu Kim is 2.0 against Scotty Sheffler in the president's cup. Really? Okay. All right. C. A, you're the attorney. Do you have a dissenting opinion to the dissenting opinion of the dissenting opinion? I don't think so. I mean, I do in the sense that I like Tom Kim in this market. Do we agree that all four of these guys are going to play five? I don't know. C. Wu will. I mean, Min Wu probably should. C. Wu will. Ryan Fox, I assume will. You think Ryan Fox will? I don't think he won a major. I don't think he's price see a as if the sportsbooks think he can. That's true. Yeah. That's a good point. That's fair. And I think when you look at the prices, so what would you agree with that? When you look at the prices on the sportsbook, they're pricing that they, you know, Colin Moorak, Colin Windham Clark for the last, you know, segment that we did that they don't think they're going to play all five.

20:01Yeah, but they don't know more than we do right now. Quite honestly. I'm not sure the captain's no. If you ask Jeff O will be right now, hey, are these four guys going to play five matches? I don't know. Ask me after Friday and I'll tell you how they played and I'll figure it out. And I think it should be noted Thursday's five Fridays, five Saturday's four and four and then singles for the sessions. Yeah. So there are more there are more matches in the rider cup. Do you like the the way this format is compared to the rider cup for the four day format? I would throw this entire thing away. Yeah. I will say I am shocked. I've been shocked for years that the rider cup, which is all about money. Guys, by the way, I hate to break it to you. You're watching right now. Everything's all about money. I know we're fans. We like to watch good, entertain it. Everything's about money. I cannot believe that the rider cup has not decided to say, Hey, let's go to four days. We get 33% more TV revenue and ticket sales and everything else. I can't believe it. I was gone the six days. I mean, why would they not expand to the

And when they're two in 12 going into December and he gets a little sprained ankle. And they're like, you know what? Sit it out. There's no point playing. And you're in the playoffs. You're like, cool. I don't have my best player. You may look really smart with that. Sobel, but you also look really smart. And I'm not one who likes to do 18 like parlays, but this is actually kind of an ingenious. No, I'm not see. Only four to six. Yeah. Yeah. He has more. I always do this to start. This is like my opening to kick off college football season week one. I go through. There's there's not like, you know, stipulations and rules this, but general rule of thumb is home teams who are above a touchdown

26:19favorite and not so much, you know, not 40 point favorites. But I were from like seven to 17 point favorites, play them on the money line. Have to be the home team. I might skip a few of them like, I really don't like that one. And you know, it's not like I have to take everybody. But week one I did, I think it was a 17 or 18 leger. And I hit it. It was five to one. I mean, this is not hitting an 18 leger that's going to make me rich or anything. But I went back to it, put more money on it week two. I went 16 for 17. Okay. There's something there. Yeah, it's close. Now we've seen some big upsets already in college football over the first few weeks. So I don't expect this to continue that said, maybe I'll keep doing it. See, if you were to take one college football future to parlay with one of your picks in this show, what's the regardless of the number, what's one college football future you would play off the top of your head? I mean, it would be Miami to win the ACC. Daryl and Mensita win the Heisman, maybe if I want to. Okay, there you go.

Like, are we really going to just give it to the quarterback? Because he's got to always give it to the quarterback. Yeah, it's the quarterback. It's a year that we've seen her. Never know. Okay, let's get to our top US captains picks. I thought this one when I was looking at it. I'm like, man, I know Patrick McDonald's got to pick the guy with the best record on the US team. He's a dynamo when it comes to these events. And he picks a guy that's never played in the in the president's cup or writer cup. And that's Jacob Richmond. The guy just won. The guy just won. Good. Six to one on Sunday. One, the built more championship. It was all over the news. Playing good golf confident. The best putter on the PJ tour. Inside 10 feet, he was making his puts at a 90% clip this year. Granted, that includes all the tapens, but still pretty bonkers rate. And I want to be surprised if he gets

28:25paired up with Goddrup and alternate shot. If they go that route, I think Goddrup needs a good wedge player. That's certainly Bridgman. And I think Snetterker, who was a very good putter in his day, might have a soft spot for him, given how good of a putter Jacob Richmond is. So I think he'll get some run. And he's playing awesome golf. So I'll take the big number at seven to one. And I like Bridgeman. I'll give out a bridgeman play later in the show. See you like Chris Goddrup in this category, nearly four to one. Yeah. I mean, looking at the captain's picks, I think there's plenty to choose from. I just think Chris Goddrup's a really good golfer. And I think Jason, did you already sing his praises? Yeah, you just talked about him. So take a stab at a couple of them and see what happens. And you know, ultimately, even when these things are really lopsided, they fall in a window that's not terribly hard to kind of guess. So USA 17 to 13 seems reasonable to me at 11 to one. That's way more fun than the other three on the board. I'm going 20 to 10. Go ahead. So yeah, speaking of fun, if you start looking at the bottom of that overall score list, you get USA 24 and a half to five and a half at 480 to one. USA 25 to five and a thousand. The short game kind of comes and goes. Caboire has also been playing well has been a good ball striker as well. So Dean and Caboire long shots, but they've really shown that they can pop with the short and long game. So I'm down with that especially in the without market. As far as first round leaders, I've got right in Chicara, Winther and Joe Dean.
