Bobby Carpenter: This Ohio State team is probably just as good as last year

The first one was a grand slam which got you back in the game. And if you're going to tell me that playoff Roqueo is heating up, I'm going to need some time to myself because that is exactly what I want to hear about playoff. I mean, you see the handling won that game. Grand slam walkoff home run. I just went out in the big O'Card today. And by the way, bailed them out from a disastrous start from Logan Allen. I will have more on this game, but again, great win, Gardos game two with the double header tonight. You can take two of these. We're going to feel very, very good. The pendulum swings back the other way for the Cleveland Guardians, but to go ahead and talk Ohio State is we are within 24 hours of Ohio State ball state on the wise heart. 1:03won the fan host Bobby Carpenter joins us now. Bobby, welcome to the show. Hey, thanks for having me on guys. It's excited to get some actual football rolling it just about all the levels. We got one more night in a week. What is it? Five or six days until we get a little NFL football starting up here on Wednesday night. We are we're ready for all the football. I was at a oh gosh. It was a black river north western game last Friday. That's how much I'm Jonesing for some football. My brother's also the defensive coordinator's then helps. But I do want to know like Ohio where are you with this Ohio State? Where have you set the expectations for this team? You know, I think every year with Ryan dad, like when the big time when he was says, you know, when the big time make the playoffs, when a gamer to like hopefully that's getting you to second round, maybe the semi final, depending on where you come in. Then sometimes there's special years where it all kind of lines up. Better in quarterback. You stay healthy.

2:03There's some continuity on the team. Like then you can maybe challenge and hopefully go try to win, you know, go win it all. And so I think this team is different than last year, probably just as good. And so hopefully there's better probably more experience to quarterback. But on defense, obviously lost a lot of really talented players. So that's going to be a tough spot. But the guys that came in really good, that Patricia's phenomenal. Arthur Schmitt is going to do a great job on the offensive side with no doubt. So they have all of the ingredients. Just you need a little bit of luck and you need to stay healthy. Yeah, I mean, they allowed just nine points per game last year, three defensive starters returning eight gone. A lot of transfers coming over though. What's the early perception of how you guys think this defense is going to go? I think it'll be different than last year. Nine points a game. I don't know if we're going to be able to replicate that. I mean, they were historically good last season. They had three guys drafting the top 11, four guys off the board in the top 40.

3:04I mean, they were as good as you were going to get. And even like sunny and sunny was obviously good. Caleb was great. There was expectations there. I don't think people expected our valedict be as good as good as quickly as he was. And the same thing with Kaden McDonald and both those guys accelerated much quicker. I was Kaden Kering about, you know, nobody's a sack last year. So a lot of production is gone. But you brought in some guys that are pretty good. Christian Allegro or a little junior James Smith, Quayra Sal. Like you feel good. The guys that are there have been developing. I think this defense might be a little more aggressive this year. Last year, one of the things like as good as they were, didn't really force many turnovers. Didn't really, you know, have a ton of sacks throughout the entirety of the season. I think this this year could be a little different with that where they maybe could be a theme that maybe gives up a little more points, but maybe makes some more impactful plays on the defensive side. Bobby, which games? I know everybody circled the Texas game.

4:05I'm not as high on Texas as everyone else. I think they're very talented. I'm not a believer in Sark. I'm probably a little bit more interested in the Oregon game myself. What games have you circled as the one the matchups you're most curious about this year, though? You know, I think that Oregon game because they're very talented. I think Texas is really talented too. But Dan Lading's kind of entering that Ryan Day phase that he was in a couple years ago, where you've been ahead most of the big time program for a number of years. Now, you know, how the state obviously has bigger internal expectations, probably than Oregon with their fan base. I think naturally people with an Oregon's, okay, this team, they've got Phil Knight. They have all the players they need. They should be able to go compete in the national championship. And I think Dan Lading's made the playoffs. They're the number one seed two years ago. They've lost kind of in rough fashion, gotten beat up a little bit. We start looking at how those games went. And so people start raising the question, okay? Like, is it time?

5:06And the question is like, it's not now than when. Like, that's all part of it. So, you know, they've got to deal with that. But that Oregon team is going to be really, really talented. So curious to see how that's going to ultimately go. And you know, part and parcel of that. I think just, it's crazy to say this. Like, you never thought you'd drop Penn State from your schedule and pick up Indiana and it'd be a tougher schedule. But the situation with having to play over Indiana, I don't think it'll be the hot, most hostile environment in the world. But anytime, like, you're going to play a team that beats you, the Fending National Chance, I think there's going to be some juice to that. Yeah, six AP top 25 teams on the schedule for the preseason at least. Is there, is the perception around Columbus that you guys kind of enjoying this? Because last year it felt like a sleepwalking in many ways. Yes, there was Texas early, but there, it just wasn't the toughest schedule. And then you got to the big 10 title game in Indiana, kind of knocked you in, knocked you around, but you saw what happened in that game and then Miami. It just kind of felt like it wasn't tough enough during the regular season. Is that the vibe?

6:06Yeah, I think it's the schedule obviously you have Texas week two, but then you look, like you said, you know, Oregon, USC, Indiana, you know, you've got Michigan on there. It is Illinois, I think it's going to be pretty decent as well. I mean, I was right. And so I think the schedule gets your attention as a player, got your attention all off season. So it allows you to be more hyper focused as you work through that. And like you said, the sleepwalking element, I mean, yeah, you could just get hyped up, but when you realize it's probably only planned two and a half hours as a starter, and you get in there and you're dominant, but it's hard to keep that edge sharp when you're not really going through a four quarter football game, except for a handful of times a year. And this year, maybe a suffer some losses at some point, but you're going to be more battle tested. And I think that that's more important than the in the long run. Bobby, I love stuff like, like, like how fan bases Edwin flow with coaches.

7:07Jim Tressel was beloved from that first year in Columbus. And nothing really ever changed that. Urban Meyer having done what he did at Florida and Utah before him. And in BG was was beloved pretty much walking in that door. Ryan's obviously had a different kind of path here. But he went, he wins that first national championship. You get the Michigan win again. I'm just curious, what does another natty do for Ryan Day and just his legacy and kind of how he's perceived as his buck ice head coach? Do you know how many coaches have won multiple national championships at Ohio State? One. That's the answer. So he would be the second and as good as urban was, as good as my coach Tressel, they're putting in the ring on her man. I love trust. You know, probably stuck you know, only to my father with the influence he's had on my life. But you know, Ryan, if he wins another, I mean, that's rare fight air.

8:08And said he wants to stay here for another 10 years. I was hoping he'd stay for five just get through his kids. I believe he's younger daughters and a trader. And if he does that, like, he's going to be the second all time when he's coaching program history. And I don't know if there's going to be coaches to coach for 27 years anymore, like what he has. So, you know, he's got that before and he's a phenomenal coach. He's a great man. If fans are very lucky, I hope they realize how blessed they are when you have a guy who is as good a coach as he is. He's also as good a man as he is because those guys are rare. You know, people talk about him not being a real buck guy and everything. Like, I mean, he got this job when he was, you know, in his 30s, 39. You know, it's the first time in my life where I was closer and aged to the head coach than the players, not the function of me getting older. But I've got to watch my kids grow up here.

9:12Or she was nothing else other than the state of Ohio and you know, okay, and like young kids. I'm going to go to Northwest and ball up and everything through here over the same. And so I think Ryan has embraced it. Winning that national championship helped win a beating Michigan last year helped. If you could beat Michigan again, you can flip that record. You're over the next couple of years and get on the pod top side of that ledger. And another national change didn't have 120 wins, 130 wins. Like, it's really an uninteresting run. Unfortunately for him when he came in, like, he was inheriting, you know, 17 years of just utter domination of the Michigan rivalry. And some of those teams weren't very good, especially in the end part of that urban era. Some of them were great in the middle, the meat of it. I mean, he played Michigan champion and other people. And so they were good school. It's gone 24, 2024. It shouldn't happen. But that probably led to a national championship.

10:12And so there's the whole story with it. I think people do appreciate. All right, Bobby. We got a boogie buddy. Oh, sorry about that. Buddy, we had a little phone break up. But we, uh, we great stuff, buddy. Really appreciate you. You have a great weekend. Okay. Bobby. Nice. You guys have to go on. We can obviously have some conversations about that. But the thing that's everybody's buzzing about right now is a double home run day by Brian Roqueo. And I think it's a little hyperbolic to say that that win saved the Guardian season. But I also think it's an incredibly important win. And if you then turn around and take the second half of this double header, it really does with, well, I think now 21 games to go after the second game, 20 games to go. It's, it's hard to kind of overdo it with praise of what these two games could mean.

11:16It felt like a massive one. And it was massive for a couple reasons. Uh, Roqueo single handedly winning the game is huge. Also the idea that Roqueo is slumped. We talked earlier about Buzana, maybe not having the greatest stretch here, two months of baseball that hadn't been good. And Roqueo had been just as bad throughout that stretch. To the point where if we're trying to find a spot for her now, it's, I'm sorry. It was going to be Roqueo that was getting replaced, but you have games like this and you're giving yourself a chance if you're Roqueo. Yeah. And what was huge about that? Roqueo, uh, two hits, two home runs, five ribbies. Uh, Buzana today had two hits before getting pulled for a pinch hitter for, for David Frye. And now had two hits chased a launder had two really nice doubles as well. Uh, I will tell you though, uh, it was driving me crazy. I, I'm very rarely the guy that complains about the umpire guy. Yeah. Uh, this, this home played umpire today was killing me, specifically in the big inning where Roqueo ended up teeing off in the, the fourth inning. Kaira Montero couldn't hit the broadside of a freaking barn.

12:19And this guy was calling every high, high ball, a strike. Yeah. And, and I, I get like Guardians fans just go, well, you're going to win those. So just challenge every play. It's like, well, that's not really how this works. No, right? Because there's a chance that even if it ends up being a, or even if it's at truly a strike, they don't always get the review right. Yeah, have to make sure you do it and basically high, high leverage times in the right opportunities. You can't just be challenging things all game. Now that being said, I do feel like game two was much more of a winnable game given who's on the bump. I, I didn't have any confidence in Logan Allen today. And that was quickly rewarded by a, you have no confidence in me kind of performance. Was this a bogo situation? A buy one, get one. Yeah. You win that game. You guys, especially the way that they did it. You know, and this is something that in the past month or so, people have been asking like trying to figure out what is different about this Guardians team than what we've seen. Maybe a month or two months ago. They don't erase six one leads two months ago.

13:19Yeah. We just watched them play too much. Like they, they're not six one, two months ago. That's a loss. I'll see it tomorrow. Get it. Get ourselves to the post game show them doing that putting up to five runs spot in the fourth inning is just not. We are starting to see it more and more. We a couple weeks ago we started to see it. Now we're starting to see it more and more. And like that's a sign that's a sign that something good is happening. Yeah. I mean, if you had gotten the kind of offensive performance since the trade deadline that you've gotten. Sorry. If you've gotten all season long, the performance you've gotten from this offense since the deadline, you might be 10 games above 500. Well, man, it makes sense though. I mean, there's, we have three different players. It's a third of your lineup is brand new and different, you know, and Adele had been tearing the cover off the ball. We like low, although he, he kind of, he, he, I, you have comments on his appearance, I'm sure. Oh, yeah, yeah, he looks like a plumber. Oh, you're going for plumber. Yeah, it's a blue collar job. Maybe an HVAC guy. Yeah. Like that's a guy who works 75 hours a week and doesn't complain. I was thinking like a Ouija type thing. But Friday night, he goes out to his, his, his barn slash workshop.

14:21He's got a second job. Yeah, yeah. He kicks his feet up uncorks. Well, I'm going to assume he's maybe a PBR could be a course light. I'm hoping it's a course banquet. But he, and he just puts his feet up and he goes, I got him made. Yeah, he does. He's a complain. That's the point. He lives the life one beverage at a time. But appreciation for that beverage. And because he's earned it. He's not, well, he has. He worked hard. It was 75 hours. We're tired. As a gig economy in the man, by the way, 75 hours, that's, that's before we get to the, the woodworking side hustle. He just, he didn't just barely make it to Friday. No, no, no, no, no, no. And that man worked. He had more in the tank. And he's ready for tomorrow too, by the way. That's what the Daniel Low looks like. He's going to party tonight. He's ready for tomorrow. Yeah. He gets right back up the crack. And he honestly, he doesn't see a difference to, you know, working in partying. I mean, you, you know, what's the, the store with the owls or fly with the eagles? What's that one? Give me, give me some help here at 615 on a Friday. I can't do the Daniel Low. I can't, I can't, I can't pull it off. Listen, I think you, you know what line I'm going for? It's who, isn't it?

15:21Is it who with the owls? Who with the owls? It's sort of an age. You don't know either. Because you've messed it up. You, you put too much, you put too much salt in my stew. I screwed you up. Okay. That's what's happened. This is the salt and the stew all over again. He can't put with the owls at night and sort with the eagles in the morning. So yeah, I did know what it was. Yeah. Uh-huh. You were just butcher. We're getting real time. I could put it in me. I've put it. It's so bad. It's like Mike and Mark turn off all over again. Hey, hey, that was a simpler time. Two and two hours. Two and four. Yeah, simpler. Yeah. It was. It was a lot simpler to our, what has changed? The two hours. That's what's changed. Time has changed. Yes. Constantly evolved. I've got to walk you through everything. This, this flat, this flat, you know, called earth. Honestly, you're my work group, but you're making this real hard on me right now. Is that right? Yeah. You're really testing our work. If this is what it takes, get rid of work, boo. And I think we're good. That was very close.
