Browns-Jaguars Predictions, Players to Watch & Keys to the Game with Coach Riz and Daryl Ruiter

0:00Welcome back to the 92 three the fan YouTube channel. Darryl Ryder joined by coach Lance Ryzenland. We of course are presented by consumer tire. And now it's time for our week one preview. The Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, of course, Cleveland's coming off yet another disappointing season, a five and 12 campaign that saw Kevin Stofansky and his coaching staff like go, in comes Todd Monkand and his new staff. Meanwhile Jacksonville was coming off a 13 and four campaign that saw them win the AFC South Fun Fact. The Browns have not wanted to vision since 1989. So they got that going for them, which is nice. DeShawn Watson has Ryzen from the dead. He is back. He will be the starting quarterback for the Browns Sunday in Jacksonville coach Riz and Trevor Lawrence going to be on the field there for them their Jaguars. Let's start with DeShawn Watson because obviously we all know the story. It's been a rough go since the Browns

1:00traded for him. No question about it. I don't I don't think that there's a lot of high expectation for Watson and what he's going to be able to do having played just 19 games in six seasons. But I asked DeShawn this week if there might be something liberating there. He's in the final year of that big massive contract that Browns gave him. Todd Monkand has talked openly about hey, I can do things my way. I'm 60 years old. I finally got a head coaching job. I'm not looking for the next one. I just want to do this one well and my way and then we'll let the results fall where they may. So do you think there could be something liberating there for DeShawn? The fact that people like myself don't have high expectations that he's going to be able to do much and based on what you've seen this offseason and camp, is there any hope that he can regain a shadow or semblance of the player that this team gave up six draft picks and 230 million fully guaranteed to? Everything you said is very, very true. Good thing is it should not affect with the new coach.

2:03It doesn't mean anything moving forward. Unfortunately, that's what we have to base it on and he did not play well. Now a couple things you get you excited about a Todd Monkand offense with DeShawn Watson as your quarterback as a 10-year veteran. First and foremost, this idea of operation and getting into the right play, that's a real thing. It's a real thing in terms of making sure you run the ball the right way, making sure you get away from blitzes, making sure you set protection. But the thing I'm excited about when they talk about, you hear the word dink and dump or check down Charlie, all those kind of things, that works if you got two high safeties. So if you have two high safeties, you have to take what's underneath you. You're hoping the run game gets a little better, so they have to bring a safety down. Simple math, less people to cover. The other thing that you like is that I've seen is his ability to get his matchups that he likes. Now that he really has to do it this year. Why? Because he's in that type of offense and there's a little bit more balance from what we've seen. The two rookie receiver ads advertise. Bond's been very good. He's come back, look really, really sharp. I think Jerry Judi and a two and three roles going to be outstanding,

3:03because he's not going to get the best corner. He's not going to get rotations to him. Then the other one is Harold Fannett. Now you have a good running game. You have Samson out of the backfield. You have Harold Fannett. You have 11 personnel with all those guys in. It's his job to get into the right play. The idea that he doesn't have to stress the ball vertically all the time comes down to, if you've got a matchup you like in the slider somewhere that can warrant a short throw, you've got to get yourself into the right play. That will help him. The run game, obviously, Darryl, he's a guy you can win with right now. I'm not sure he's a guy you can win because of anymore. He has to go out and do it. But this offensive personnel around him, the scheme, everything that's involved pre-stab gives him a chance to be successful. He's got to get some early completions. They got to run the ball well. But yes, he can absolutely, I don't think people should look for 220. There's not a lot of quarterbacks who are still playing well that are as good as they were six years ago. He's just got to be very serviceable and make sure he does not lose the game and not turn the ball over because I think this defense and the special teams are good enough to keep them in games. Let's talk about

4:04the matchup specifically here with Watson. Obviously, we know the basics, right? He's got to take care of the football. Can't have careless interceptions. We did see a lot of interceptions from him during training camp, but the caveat there is it's training camp. They are working on things there on both sides of the football. But we look at this Jacksonville defense. What worries you when it comes to Deshaun Watson? Well, first and foremost, they stop the run very well. Again, they have to win first down. Both sides are looking to win first down because what gets you in trouble with a quarterback who is a little bit rattled. There is a confidence issue. It doesn't mean he can't get his confidence back. But early on, you'd like to run the ball. When they're in those run or pass situations at like second and five, when you get the second, ten or third and ten, now these defenses get the disguised their coverages and get exact with their blitzes and do all kinds of stuff that these guys get paid lots of money to do. But if you're in second and third and medium, five around five, defenses have to play regular. So as a quarterback, you kind of get a look, a true picture of what

5:06you're seeing because of the threat of the run. So the defense is the ability to stop the run is what worries me the most. Obviously, you have to make sure you don't turn the ball over. They've done a really nice job of creating turnovers over the last couple of years. You know, because of the balance, I'm going to stay away from Travis Hunter or especially early in the game to create some rhythm. I'm going to try to find Harold Fanon against, you know, a Luke and because I don't think a Luke is a very good cover guy. He's a tackling machine. So just trying to avoid what they do best, right? Try to avoid always being in now that when it comes out of first down, they're going to load the box. So maybe on first down is when you're dinkered, Duncan, it's kind of treated as a run game. Maybe get Casey conception in the flat. Then you get the second medium, then you could run our pass. But the thing that scares me the most about this defense for DeShow in Watson is that can they can force the grounds into second and third long where he has not been very successful. Yeah. Some news on the offensive line. Tevin Jenkins, a DNP on Thursday will find out Friday, whether or not he will be questionable or play or even ruled out. He's dealing with a back issue

6:10of some sort. That means that Austin Barber, who has come on in recent weeks, who has given Todd Monkin and the coaching staff second thoughts about what to do at right guard there. Look, he very well could have to step in, but this rebuilt offensive line, right? You know, and you mentioned the pass rush of the Jaguars. You know, you look at Josh Heinz Allen, eight sacks, you know, 12 tackles for loss, battered some balls down at the line of scrimmage. So he can finish at the quarterback or he can be disruptive at the line of scrimmage. Eric Armsted, you know, seven tackles for loss, close to, I want to say around five, six sacks last season as well. You know, Travon Walker, the other defensive end opposite Heinz Allen also disruptive in the backfield. So that defensive front for Jacksonville against this rebuilt Brown's offensive line.

7:12Well, you have first and foremost, the good thing about, you know, Allen, Heinz, well, Allen is that Josh, he is a speed rusher. He's 255 pounds. And the one thing that Spencer Fano, it struggles with a little bit right now is that he's a young kid. When you see him with the helmet off, you see he's a young kid, but he's a super talented kid at six foot five, 300, and you know, in that 20 pound ring. And he's got super light feet. That's why he's an NFL ninth pick in the draft because of his feet. That's helpful against Heinz Allen because Heinz Allen tries to beat you with speed. So I think Fano will be okay with that. Now, if he struggles, they got to make sure they chip on him. They got to make sure they run at him early down some body shots. Make sure they wear him down a little bit. Now Walker's the guy kind of, it's not it's not it's equal to Jared verse, but he's the kind of guy gives you that speed to power where he's going to be speed, but he's going to try to bull rush you more. That's where we saw Fano struggle just because he doesn't have that grown men's strength yet. Then inside, obviously, you know, I think the idea of Barbara Plains, okay, because these guys are massive inside, but the key to me is Elton Jenkins at the center because he he's playing the center that really turned out

8:15in their favor because now he's next to Barbara when you talk about past protections and run games and seeing the fronts and seeing where you're going to go. It's helpful having that veteran next you who's also been a guard who can help you between series, even at the line of scrimmage in the huddle, etc. So, Barbara's a super talented guy. I like him at guard because he struggles in past protection. He does not struggle with physicality. He does not struggle with getting off the football. So, you know, get him some success around some gap schemes. He's got Jenkins decks in which he's huge. Fano give him help if he needs it. You know, once again, this is not a super blitz. There's a front four that's really good against the run. They're okay. They're okay past rushers. They do it more as a group, right? So, again, I don't think it's a terrible matchup, but this is a matchup favor. So, because they're veterans and it's a new bunch for the Browns. Let's talk about that Browns ground attack. Quinchon Judkins along with Dylan Samson. And I'm assuming that Rahim Rocket Sanders will also be active on Sunday. And they'll go with the three-headed monster. They're coming out of the backfield. What did you like from them in camp? Certainly from my perspective,

9:20look like Quinchon, perfectly fine from the dislocated ankle and the broken leg. You would not tell that he was coming off that devastating injury that cut his rookie season short. But when you look at the Browns run attack, could this be one of those games where they lean heavily in that direction rather than trying to ask Dishon Watson to carry it through the passing game? Obviously, scoreboard will also dictate that if they fall behind by multiple scores. And by the way, they are doubled, I should say, multiple score underdogs, depending where you look in seven-and-a-half, eight-and-a-half point dogs in this game. So, if they fall behind multiple scores, obviously, that means Dishon has to throw the ball more. But is this a game that maybe the running game could be leaned on? Well, the big thing they got to do is they got to get the middle line back or pull you side, Aolukin. They got to get him blocked. He's a tackling machine. He plays great from tackle to tackle. I don't see him with arm set in there really not running between the

10:23tackles. Now, this is a different run game than when Teller but Tony O'Neill thinks that you and I have been used to for the last ten years. It doesn't make it weak. What it makes it is that they're balanced. So, Munkin's going to try to run against a six-man box. The old school Browns, they didn't care how many were in the box. They were trying to knock you down. They're going to give it to a chub. He's going to run over you. This is more of an NFL style where they're going to try to run against a six-man box. They got to get a lukin block. He's a tackling machine. One of those guys, he's instinctual. He just makes a ton of tackles. They get him blocked. They got a chance. Now, the other thing that you'd like to see him do is I think it's 1 in 1 A when it comes to Judkins and Rocket Sanders. What I mean by that, those are guys that are going to pound you. Those are guys that are going to run the ball, the classic run game. What they've done with Dylan Samson is really going to be special this year. I think you and I saw it in Campbell Bunch where he's running back because he's back there. He can do those things but Munkin's asking him to do what he does best in the NFL. That's not pass block. That's not run between the tackles. He can do those things but what he is, he's a space guy and he's a touch guy. Look for him to be a matchup

11:26if they do get the second and third and long. Try to find a matchup with him. Almost treat it like a run game. Extended hand-offs where you're getting rid of the ball quickly in the flats, etc. We saw a ton of that with him this spring and summer. If they're going to run the ball physically, they got to get a lukin block. He's a guy who makes a ton of tackles. He'll be right over the center in that 4-2 look, 4-3 look. Get him blocked. You got a chance. Again, Alan's a guy. It's good as he is and he's really good. It's a really good football player. But at 255 pounds, you got to physically attack and make him tired. Take some body shots for, you know, a third, fourth quarter. So he's a little bit worn down. All right. Let's flip on over. Look at this Jaguars offense going against the Browns defense here. It's Derrera Rider coach Lance Ryzen breaking down week number one, Browns and Jaguars. We of course presented you by Consumer Tire Trevor Lawrence coming off a 4,000 yard passing season over, er, just to say close to 61%, completion percentage, a 29 to 12, touchdown to interception ratio. These are regular season numbers. He had a quarterback rating

12:30north of 90 last year. What's the key to slowing up, Mr Lawrence? Well, you know, he's kind of in that realm, Derrera, where he's at the quarterback. You win with and then the quarterback, you win because of he's almost getting into that like the lead level. I don't think he's quite there yet. He's kind of like that baker where he's really, really good and then he kind of comes back down. Here's the key with them that excites me about this game because I'm all about matchups. Is that the Browns number one matchup that they are that they have in this game on either side of the ball is Mason Graham and Malik Collins against Ezra Cleveland in a manual pregnant on the rookie out of Oregon. They are guys who play high. They're not super in their lateral movement and pass protection. They're good run blockers. That's why they got a win on first down, right? Because they're going to try to run the ball and then it makes it hard on those defensive tackles. But if they can get in the second third loan, that's the Browns best matchup versus against the tackle. There's some other matchups that are good, but that's the key defensively. They got it. They got to win those two. Then I would like to see I would like to see Denzel Ward go with, you know, Tom, I'd like to see him

13:32cover the best receiver who that, you know, if it's Parker Washington, whoever that may be, whoever they classify as the number one guy, get him get Denzel Ward on that guy who's ever hot. And then obviously crowd the ball online. It's going to win first down. If you can win first down, then your matchups come a little bit more prevalent, right? Because then you can pass rush. You got man coverage against guys that I think, you know, Brian Thomas, good player. I think Ward's better. Take him away. Parker Washington is a good player. I think the Browns can double maybe put, you know, because their other corner is so good too. Right, Tyson Campbell is so good. Maybe they can help on Parker Washington in the slot with the safety. So there's things that that Routenberg can do, but it all starts with getting Trevor Lawrence office spot, you know, that A and B get pressures where you do that to a quarterback. All quarterbacks are less quarterbacks when you get pressure right in their face quickly. That's what the Browns got to do to beat this team. All right. Obviously the ones looking to apply that pressure, Jared verse, Mason Graham, Carson Swessinger, Quincy Williams, you know, so you look at this, this front four, the Browns,

14:37obviously Williams added, verse added, but it still, it still feels like the same attitude, scheme, alignment goals, you know, I know Mike Routenberg is trying to put his own flavor on this defense, but it almost kind of feels like the Browns are just going to try and pick up right where they left off, even though they swapped out a few key components. Well, yeah, and you know, we haven't been talking about I think Carson Swessinger is on the verge of like a Luke Keekley type of career where he's going to be a lead top guy at the NFL, at the Mike Limebacker. And that's huge. But you talk about guys that not only that front four, but you think about a guy like two guys that, you know, middle the second quarter, middle the third quarter when people get tired, Aiden Huntington, Mike Hall Jr. Can they create some pass rush when they're fresh and those guys, they, it's going to be hot there. Can they, you know, can they use their reps to get some, you know, get some pressure on these guys up front, but you're right defensively. The big difference in the philosophy is the same. The big difference that we're all going to see, and when you and I

15:38were talking to him, he was a ball of energy. But what you want to see is what is he going to call situationally? We knew what Schwartz was going to do on second and long, second and short, third and medium in the red zone. That's where Rutenberg, he might do an outstanding job. He's just never done it before. So that'll become the test. What is he doing in those situations where we knew Schwartz was going to do? He was outstanding. When I liked most about Rutenberg talking to him, as he said, I'd be stupid not to take what we did well and use that. And I thought that was key in saying, Hey, listen, I'm not, you know, I'm not rebuilding the, I'm not rebuilding everything here. We're good. We're just going to put some of my own spin on and some of that own spin will be a little bit more to safety. I'm passing down sometimes. You're going to see the skies, even though a lot of the time it's going to be one safety deep pressure and, and swash injury Williams trying to make the tackle after the defensive line screws everything up. That's really the philosophy. It'll stay the same. I look for this defense. If the Browns got a chance, they got to create good field position, short field for this offense. I'm looking forward to it. That again, Darryl, that matchup inside with those offensive guards is the key to this game for me. All right. Let's

16:40talk about Travis Hunter. Came into the league was supposed to be a two way player. Obviously, the Browns are right in the middle of that trade. Jacksonville moving up to number two. Cleveland bumping down to number five. Browns ended up with Mason Graham. They took Travis Hunter second overall. Unfortunately, his rookie season got cut short due to injury. Certainly sounds like his role on offense is going to be minimal. They're going to focus more on him on the defensive side of the football. But he certainly has the talent. 28 catches close to 300 yards. A couple of touchdowns before he did get hurt. But just in the defensive side, he did break up some passes. He showed a lot of talent there. Just what do you make of Hunter and how do you think the Jaguars will try and deploy him? Well, I think Parker Washington, the slot receiver and Jacobi Myers, they're veteran receiver. Those guys scared me a little bit more. Parker Washington's the guy that scares

17:43me because he's going to be in the slot. And how are the Browns going to handle the slot? When Hunter comes in, obviously, there'll be a lot of decoy with him when he's not as detailed in his route running. I don't worry about him as much as offense. Now he's outstanding. The thing that I like about where he's at, if you say to me, he's going to go against Boston. Well, I think he's better Boston right now or if he's going against Casey conception. I think he's a little bit better right now. That maybe not six weeks from now than all the Browns receivers. But I don't think Brown and Braswell and Jordan Lewis are better than the rest of the Browns guys. So if you say to yourself, this is what you're hoping. You can see the picture. It's still got to be painted and they got to go do it. But you can envision what they're trying to do. Okay, Hunter's going to take away Boston then Casey and the rest of the guys got to do it. If they say we're going to put him on fan and are we're going to put him on Judy, then the rest of the guys got to do their part as well. So I think Hunter is an outstanding elite DB. And I think he wins a lot of the matchups. And I think Boston, if he puts him on Boston, you'll see Boston lose a lot of those matchups because it's week one. And he'll get better and better from it. But then Judy and Bond and Casey, Concepcion and

18:47Fanon and Samson out of the backfield. And if they go nickel to try to help, then you got to run the ball. You can see that you can see it envision what the Browns offense could be if these guys play up to their level. But yeah, he's an outstanding talent. But that's what bounce does. It allows you to go, you know what? He is good. Let's stay away from him a little bit. All right. Let's talk some special teams here. I know you've been you've been waiting for this. You like talking. You like talking special teams. The kicking advantage. Okay. I think I'm going to give it to Jacksonville here. Cam Little's just got an absolute cannon for a foot. 50 to 51 on PATs last year, 30 to 34 on field goals. He can kick from 60 with his eyes closed, right? I don't think that that's something Andrei Schmidt can do. Andrei, very reliable. Had a very good off season. Obviously had a good season last year with the Browns, the 25 and 26 on PAT tries 24 of 27 last year kicking field goals. Also pretty good from 50 plus. But I kind of think here, field position is going to be so critical

19:54in this game in a big reason why not so much because of Cory Borhorquez or Logan Cook, the punters, but because of these place kickers. Well, I'll tell you this. So you're absolutely right. So when you say just kicking, you would have to say Jacksonville has the advantage, but that's a great thing because the Browns kicked the ball well last year. Let me talk about punting and kicking. Where the Browns have improved is their ability to cover because the roster has gotten faster. So they're going to cover kicks. They've worked on it tirelessly, individual group, teamwork, day in and day out. They worked at it. So they made it important to these guys. Then you have a big time punt return in case he concepts you know, maybe flip the field a little bit. They're covering better. They're lane integrity. They're mechanics. The the enthusiasm on these teams. So even though the kickers, I think, are better. What the Browns can do now is they can make it a wash. And what I mean by that is in the NFL, you don't always win special teams, but you can never lose them. And what I so it's got to be a push. And last year we saw that wasn't a push. Most of the time, they lost that phase.

20:54And I don't think they lose that phase this year. I think it's a push or they win it. And that gives them advantage with field position for both the offense and the defense. So special teams, you know, obviously I love talking special teams just because how much they valued it and how much people will see the Hedgen Yardage and the big returns and covering, you know, covering kicks and things like that. They've taken a lot of pride. I'd be shocked if it's not really good on Sunday. We're waiting for the Browns explosive return game to appear. It feels like you got to go back. I mean, yeah, we Travis Benjamin. There was a little spark there, but you got to go all the back to Josh Cribs. Yeah, since the Browns had a consistent return man, I think they're really hoping that Casey concepts. Yone is going to be able to take on that role Malik I Corley. We've seen him returning kicks along with Dylan Samson, Isaiah Bond. Probably going to be in the the return mix. Jacksonville themselves. You know, they've got some some pretty strong return ability on that team Parker Washington. They're outstanding wide receiver. Handles a lot of puns. Titan handles

21:58some kicks. Allen as well. Who do you think's got the big advantage in the return game, which again, going to be pretty critical when you're talking about trying to establish that field position and setting up the respective offenses? Well, I'm going to say it's a push, but I think eventually, Casey conception will be this will be a really a big strength for him. Obviously game day, live bullets. It's going to be faster than anything he's ever seen. So that they'll be a learning curve there. Parker Washington's a good punt returner too, but I think the Browns cover puns better than Jacksonville. Now, we don't know that this year, but ask when you see, unless Jacksonville worked on it, which I don't know, we don't know, but let's you see them working on it. I see the the ability, the Browns to cover and make sure he stays inside and the Browns have guys who are they're using Malik I Corley and Bond and all these guys as Gunners. So they're using speed. So the punt return for me is going to be a wash. Both are really good and both teams have to watch. Tutan is the guy that scares me a little bit because kick return is all about getting vertical and taking your risk and you might get a kill shot. You might get absolutely blasted, but that's

23:02where you split through the line, especially with this new kickoff return. And that's what kind of, that's how he runs the ball in the backfield too, where it's vertical one cut and then just go as fast as you can. That's how you return kicks, especially at the NFL level. So Malik I Corley has not been super at it, but he has the right body type and maybe now that he's the six receiver and this is how he can impact the game. Maybe he's looking to be making, you know, this is how he makes an impact. It's not going to be the six receiver early on. He can make a big impact on special teams. Hopefully he, you know, you've heard him talk about it. You know, once again, you hope it's going to be a wash. Both special teams are very good. All the kickers are very good. This should be a not you after the game. You should not, if we're not talking about him at all, the Browns did better. All right. Let's go with matchup of the game. I'm going to go with Jared verse going against Anton Harrison. I think that that's an opportunity for verse to really announce his presence with authority here with the Cleveland Browns. What's your favorite matchup you're going to be watching on Sunday? I'm going to go Malik Collins, Mason Graham, but I'm going to really go Malik

24:04Collins with his past-row style. If he gets matched up, I'd love to see them get him on a manual pregnant on the rookie out of Oregon. First and foremost, he's an outstanding player, but when you're a rookie inside, there's some learning curve. And Malik Collins is a veteran who is fast and is super past-rush. He's got a big, big book of moves he can use. That's the matchup that I really like. I like Ezra Cleve, but he's a veteran, so he'll have some veteran techniques and some savvy in there. Browns got to take advantage of that rookie, even though he's good in the run game. Win first down, making path protect. They could beat that kid. All right. It's prediction time. I am going Jaguar's 23 and the Browns 17 in a tight one. The Browns at least cover again, the spread's seven and a half. I do think it's going to be a little more competitive game that a lot of folks want to say that it's going to be, what do you think's going to happen there on Sunday, Coach Rist? Well, everything, so especially this game, points don't mean anything because no one knows. No, the other startters play. We don't know

25:05anything. So I'm just going to go with that. You know what? You know what though? I'm putting it out there. I'm giving you a score. I am just going to lay it on the line. 23 17, boom, there you go. And I admit, I don't know. I don't know what the points are going to look good. I'll give you mine then. I'm going, I'm going Browns 21 17. I'm going Browns 21 17. I think they get themselves out of this rut. I think, once again, the only way they can do it is they've got to go out and do it. At some point in time, they're going to turn the corner. And I'm going to say, Monkin is six years old. He's going to let it hang out a little bit and let it go. So I got the Browns and I don't think it's a huge upset because of the fact there's some favorable matchups, even though the Jaguars Rosser is really good. It's a really good football team. Some of these matchups really favor the Browns. Again, though, they got to go out and play. You did mention this before we get out of here. So I'm going to, I want to ask you about Todd Monkin. Do you think he just lets the Sean let it fly on Sunday like a, you know, a very loose

26:06vertical passing attack or at least try and get real vertical with this passing attack and try and generate some explosives right out of the gate. I mean, no one, I mean, I think you're the only one that's picking the Browns to win this game. So congratulations to you. And if they do, you're going to be a genius and everyone's going to love you for that. But in all seriousness, do you think that this is one of those, hey, no one picking us to win anyway. So why not? Let's just air this thing out. See what the Sean can do. Let's take these young minor receivers for a ride and some of the other receivers and see if we can get vertical and generate some explosives. You got him scoring three touchdowns. I don't know if they scored three touchdowns in a month last season. So, yeah, good for you. But in all seriousness, though, do you think that could be Munkin's approach? Just let it fly. Well, here's the thing I like is that it's not necessary to let it fly Darryl. But with this offense being a matchup offense, it depends. Do they do they do they say, hey, listen, we're going to put that safety in the box and we're going to play one high hat. Well, then in this offense, as compared to the previous offense, that's what he's going to have to do.

27:10What's great about this offense, if they go to state these and play and play the pass, he's got to check it down and they got around the ball. If they go, if they bring it down, you got to find your best matchup and it might be a vertical. Is there safety help over top? Well, if there's no safety help over top in the corner's tight, you got to take a shot deep. If there's no safety help over top with the corner's 10 yards off, you got to check to a hitch and throw it and get six, seven yards. So it comes down to him not only pushing the ball vertical, but taking what they give them and everybody, you know, the check down Charlie or or Dinkin dunk, that's a good thing if they're giving that to you. What the change is and what killed Don Gabriel last year is what they say, you know, what we're going to take that away. Now you have to push it vertical.
