Hello everyone, welcome back to the Hemer territory podcast episode 4 6 2. My name is Brad Roland in a celebratory atmosphere on this Thursday evening into Friday. Scott Coleman, the Braves, won a playoff series and they did it while facing elimination. That never happens. How are you? Hello Brad, what a bounce back tonight from the Braves and the vibes were impossibly low after letting game 2 get away. And I think everybody was looking around like, oh man, here we go again, another Braves October heartbreak, but credit to them really from from the very first pitch that they saw tonight from Aranola. They had a great approach all that long. They were patient in the box. They hit for power, which is so important to this team. And this kind of Ragtag group led by the great now Atlanta legend, Ray Kerr and a half
dozen others out of the bullpen tonight covered nine innings. It was just such a well played game. The defense was spectacular just all around a great game tonight in a fantastic home crowd at Truist Park as well. By all accounts, our guy Stephen Tober was on the scene. I'm sure he'll talk about that later on on this podcast, but yeah, awesome crowd, awesome night. As we talked about yesterday on the show, it had been 30 years since the Braves face elimination in a playoff setting and came back and were able to win that series. That streak is now over as of this evening. Scott, playing to discuss what's mixing up engineered by our friends at Fast and All. The Braves also won a playoff series for the first time in five years. Remember the World Series Scott? That was the last time the Braves won a playoff series. It had been a while. Yeah, I know it was best of three. I don't care. They beat the Phillies. We don't like the Phillies. It made it even more fun.
You talked about it for what's going to Ragtag. Ragtag is now like a legendary playoff hero to some degree. I know it wasn't a World Series game, but when a guy who had thrown 70s, two career innings in the big leagues, and it never made a playoff appearance at all, goes out in shoves for three in the third innings, off the top against arguably your biggest rival in your building. Especially when half the fanbase on social media was mad that they were even starting Raker in this game. Some of the replies to the Braves tweet and us and that were very funny after the fact. Shows to you, Raker. Raker, Braves legend. Yes. An immediate legend up there with your Tyler Matt Six and just some of the other unexpected heroes who stepped up. Raker was fantastic. He was peppering the strike zone. It was a lot of strike one working ahead of the count. Really didn't give up any hard contact other than I think Kausch Warburg got him for an opposite field single, but Kausch Warburg gets everybody for a lot of hard contact. Raker was so good, worked into the fourth inning.
When he got announced today, it was like, okay, all right, this is by far the biggest spot of his life. And he answered the call. And it was also just a great moment too as Kerr got a standing ovation coming off the mound in the fourth inning. You know, you could tell he took it in. He took a moment to really appreciate what just happened. Just a special moment and a player who I think he had nine appearances with the Braves during the regular season missed the last year and a half recovering from elbow surgery and stepped up in the biggest way. Knowing the Phillies were going to throw Aaron Nola and Zach Wheeler tonight. And Raker was really the story of the game for this team. Yeah, this is a 32 year old guy, a journeyman who's been everywhere. He's not like he's 22, which would have been a different kind of awesome story, but a 32 year old guy making this appearance and doing that. It's like the how can you not be romantic about baseball kind of thing, right? How cool is that? Just in general. And look, Walt Weiss kind of signaled that they were going to do this last week. And we talked about it on the podcast.
They had this game in Miami that was otherwise not important. They used Ray Curra as an opener and then went to Grand Homes. And as the boys talked about this last night, we did a little bit. You could not possibly ask for anything more from the from the Curr Homes piggyback than five and a third innings with one or run allowed. Like that's the office did his job. We'll talk about that. But run prevention wise. Yes, Chris sale closing it out. Also a lot of fun. We'll get to that. I'll play to talk about, but I mean, five and a third innings one run from Ray Curr and Grand Homes like, yeah, all right, man, we'll take it. Sign me up. That's the good stuff. And when you think about the series, you know, we knew Chris sale and Tyler Malley, but if this guy to a game three, they needed somebody to step up and we know how good sale was in game one. We know how good Malley was in game two. And you tell me, I mean, you just said the stat line for Curr and Homes. I mean, that's spectacular. That's all you can ask for. Really happy for those guys. And Homes also threw the ball. Well, got into a little bit of danger there, but got a big time double play to get out of
it like all night long, man, the pitching staff did its job. We got to see Robert Suarez and then Chris sale the legend himself, Dylan Dodd got into the game finally. So yeah, just credit to the pitching staff. This group won through, I guess 11, absolutely did its job. Other than there was a hiccup or two along the way in the later innings, we won't pick it that scar anymore from game two. But most of the pitching staff, one through 11 did its job and knowing how good the Phillies rotation is on paper. We knew they were going to have to throw the ball well and for the most part, they answered the call. Yeah, and even did your Fentez got to bounce back and maybe get some confidence that he'll be able to take into the next round. Only Dylan Lee didn't have that opportunity and hopefully he'll be used at some point and be more effective in the future. And the offense, look, was spotty, but I didn't think it was more patient. The approach was pretty good. And yeah, three home runs is three home runs and we'd stay it all the time on the pod for years now, like home runs, you kind of need them.
It is what it is. And the playoffs, when you out home were your opponent, you tend to win. The Braves did three home runs. They were big ones. And we'll talk about this more in depth in a second, but Michael Harris just setting the tone right off the bat with a three-point home run. It with the way it ended up, you never know if that was going to be enough on its own. It would have been by the letter of the law because the Phillies always scored two runs. But man, it's hard to describe. I'll ask you, I'm not even going to give my opinion. What did it feel like over there in Arizona, when the Braves are suddenly up three nothing to begin this game? It's like, you and I are similar. We go through all the fear and loathing before one of these games and all the worst case scenarios. And it's like, oh, the Braves are up three to nothing within 10 minutes of the start of the game. That's a nice feeling. That's, I mean, it's over. But boy, it just feels different when you're suddenly in control right away. It felt like it really took like the weight of the world off of everybody. And it was so good to see them get a lead. I wanted to make note of a stat that our great co-host, Sean had in the preview episode.
The Braves had played something, okay, so going back to the World Series, the Braves had played 12 games. In the first five innings of those 12 games before tonight, in the first five innings, that's 60 innings. They had a lead in three of those 60 innings since the World Series in the first time. Tonight, they had a lead in all five, right? First inning, you go out, you know, it's funny. Michael Harris gets ahead to O and the ball that he hit out was almost bounced. It was one of the lowest pitched baseballs in playoff history to be hit out. I know the great Sarah Langs had some stats about that. So for Mike to get that ball out, it just cleared the right field fence, which was kind of a theme in this series. A lot of home runs just barely ended up in that very first row of the right field seats. It was euphoric. The crowd was already jacked up and it just amplified it even more. So to get that swing to go up three nothing early, it was, you can't put into words how
gigantic of a lift that was. 100% and I was, I will raise my hand. I was still terrified at moments for the next two and a half to three hours, but having the lead early and never giving it back, never being tied even they were in control the entire way does make it easier. Doesn't always make this take all the nerves away, but they were able to go out of wire in this one, which was much appreciated for my heart, honestly. I probably eat too much salt in my diet. Like all these things like a word about my heart sometimes. Today it was a little a little bit easier because they were in control. I tell you what Brad, I was in my living room for this game. I was wishing I was at truest, cheering the boys on. I don't think I sat down for three hours like I was pacing from. I did not sit. No. Whole game. And it's funny where maniacs like there was a spot in my living room where when Aussie homer, it's kind of where I was standing when I was pacing back and forth and I kept going back to that spot because clearly that spot in your living room is the lucky spot. So yeah, I think you I a lot of people watching the game tonight at home.
It was not a lot of sitting in casual viewing because even with the early three nothing lead, even the five nothing lead, I think we've all we've seen some things for the braves in October until that final out from Chris sale happened. I don't think anybody was breathing easily. No, we were not, but in the end again, their first playoffs series win in five years and their first elimination of avoidance and a playoff setting for 30 years. I was 10. You were younger than that when that happened back then. So who that's a long time ago. All right, in a moment, we'll talk about everything from this game. And then even a brief look at what we cannot be upfront about the NDS starts on Saturday. But before we get to the rest of the game, break down for game three. Let's take a look at the current drum roll. Please World Series market.
According to our friends at Calishe, let's just dream big. Shall we? We're going to ask some questions about World Series chances. Feeling good right now. Braves fans are feeling it. Let's take this opportunity to go ahead and look at this on Calishe. Presently, the Braves are currently trading at 8.7% basically to win the series. The World Series on Calishe. That has of course gone up because they advanced from the best of three. They're still not one of the favorites. Part of that, I'm sure they have to face the Dodgers without home field advantage starting on Saturday. It's improved very rapidly in the last few days. And at 8.7% odds, it's $25 trade. Pays out about $267. Yes, $267 in terms of dollars if you're right and the Braves win the whole Shebang. So if you're interested in trying out Calishe, use code baseball and $55. $55 added to your account instantly. One more time that code is baseball. $55 added instantly to your account with our friends at Calishe. Okay Scott.
Let's go through the high points. We've talked about some of this stuff already, but we have more depth and things and observations and what we wasted better today. We'll get into all that. So Ray Curses the tone. Curses the first ending. Allows a single college rubber, but nothing crazy. I have to, not a victory lap, but I feel like we have talked about this right away. I don't know if I said this publicly enough. And honestly, when you got recorded last night, I assumed the Phillies were going to start Zach Wheeler. Because Zach Wheeler is very good. And we said as much on the podcast. Then we're broke this morning that they were going to start aeronol. And I literally I have evidence. I won't send it because it's a private DM that we have the four of us. And I use the word gift to describe what I thought that was non-matically. And I'm not always right. And I was right on that one because aeronol of pitching felt like a gift. And look, Michael Harris still beat him. Aeronol was a good pitcher. I'm not, I'm not trying to say, but he's not Zach Wheeler. And it did feel like, well, they got, they got we or two.
It wasn't like they, we were dominated this game. But I thought that was an advantage that the braves were afforded. And we can credit what wise to. I thought what after some shakiness last night, people, I know we're all the boys and how much they blame what wise for last night. I thought what did a very good job today. And that was an advantage to the brave set. Yes, I agree on all counts. And the fact that they went to aeronol and set a Zach Wheeler is absolutely a gift. And when that, when I saw that early, I'm like, okay, all right, we know the braves are going to be a little unconventional tonight with who they have to pitch. But I'll take my chances against aeronol. I mean, the guy he's, he's been really good for a long time. The braves have seen no a ton and a lot of the hitters in the lineup have really good career numbers against him. Now, they were talking about it on the broadcast. Why they went to no, instead of Wheeler, the only prevailing thought was the maybe the Phillies knew they were going to have to pitch both. And they were maybe more confident in no less starting in Wheeler coming out of the bullpen, whether than vice versa.
But it's a game three elimination. I mean, that would be the equivalent of Chris sale, not starting tonight for the braves to start a grand home. It's basically right. I mean, no land homes are pitched relatively similar this year on a performance basis. So yeah, it was a gift. They, they got to know that was at the second inning when he ultimately left because they just couldn't risk leaving him in there anymore. So you know, the braves took advantage of the gift from Philadelphia and now the rest is history. Yeah, don't we got five outs and I think it was reasonable to think Wheeler might not be able to go forever because he was not on full rest. I get that. But he threw four innings. And if you, if you told me come into the game that he was even capable of throwing 70 pitches, he would have started for me. But hey, I'm not the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies and I'm glad that's the case on this night. We talked about Michael Harris. But look, that first inning, Baldwin's flyouts opened the game was 101 miles an hour. He hit it really well. And then Noah walks both Akunia and Olson before the Harris home run.
And look, Michael Harris has been awesome this year. Even in game one, he had three hits. He was really good. He had kind of a nightmare game mystery. And in fact, I saw this on Twitter and I looked at it, make sure I wasn't crazy. In fact, if you go by win probability added WPA, it's an advanced stat. I like it. It doesn't mean it's gospel, but I say that because yesterday's game for Michael Harris, where he had two double plays in one game was the seventh worst WPA, would probably be added by a brave player in a playoff game in the history of the franchise. Oh, seventh worst ever. Wow. Because of the double plays and obviously those are killers. They're, you know, just by the math of it's two outs. So I don't know if Michael was actually that bad yesterday. But for that guy who had a rough day yesterday to have to have the immediate redemption and back up, what's been an awesome season for him. That was a, what maybe wasn't as cool of a story as Ray Kerr, but Michael Harris hometown guy, like easy to root for love Michael. And that was a, that was a fun one for him to kind of capitalize on right away.
Oh, yeah. I mean, we saw more emotion out of Mike, was he was running the bases. There's maybe we have ever seen out of Michael Harris. And he was fired up. I mean, he was jacked up. Yeah, local kid. I'm sure he had tons of family and friends at the game tonight. Yeah, just a special moment. And there was no person on earth who wanted to redeem themselves more in this baseball game tonight than Michael Harris. Because if he comes through and either those situations in game two, the brave's probably went and instead it was basically the worst possible outcome. I don't have the exact number in front of me. I think Michael had maybe three double plays the entire season. And he had two of them in game two, which is very much on brand for just weird playoff game stuff. But yeah, so happy for Mike. We talked about it just the weight of the world off of everybody's shoulders. Everybody breathe a little bit easier. I don't know if they've asked Ray Kerr about it yet, but I'm sure for him in the dugout, it's like, all right. Yeah, I want to go be perfect out there. But if I'm not, we have a nice, comfortable three run lead here to kind of give me some breathing room. Really just was a euphoric moment there at Truist Park.
One of the coolest moments we've seen at that stadium. Oh, yeah. And again, the crowd by all accounts was just unhinged. And I'm sure having a first inning home run to take a three nothing lead probably helped the crowd. But even before the game started, it was a, we will not do the rant again about this, but it was a stark contrast and atmosphere from the first two days to tonight. Imagine that also imagine that not playing a baseball game at two in the Fing afternoon. Yeah, you get a little better crowd when the games at eight o'clock and people aren't on Zoom calls at their day jobs and picking up their kids from school. The dumbest thing imaginable, I so help me if we get another out. I don't think so. I think the NLDS schedule is out and there will not be a more two o'clock starts for the braves. But yes, imagine that Brad a much, much, much better atmosphere under the lights and not in the middle of the afternoon. I lied to everyone when I said we wouldn't do the rant again. Scott did the rant again. That's fine. I'm okay with that. Also, we, we ended the show you and I last night with our rant about not knowing what time the game was going to be.
I will say this shouts to the Cubs and Yankees. Padres, Padres and Yankees. Sorry, Padres and Yankees because we're already advanced, the cup of pain to Padres. Yeah, trust the Padres and Yankees for holding up their end of the bargain to allow this game to be at eight o'clock. That made it made it better for everybody. Yes, I didn't want to watch it more after noon baseball. Okay. So in a beautiful way, the second and third innings were pretty quiet. Ray Kerr goes one, two, three and one, two, three again, Schuster recur. Oh man. I thought it was very funny. This is a very quick sidebar. Dom Smith opened this game two for two, which made everybody laugh, including me because he was a controversial DH in the ninth spot today. It didn't actually impact anything because he didn't score it other time or create me runs, but that was a good, good on Dom Smith. They'll probably need them to do something later on. So that worked out well. In the fourth, they kept Kerr in to face Shorburne Harper one more time, which I was okay with at the moment. He did walk Shorburne four pitches. I got a little worried at that moment. And then he got Harper to line out.
It was hit hard. I was a little scared in that moment. I will say, but that was it for Kerr. They bring in Grand Homes. He gets out of the ending and in the bottom of the fourth after the Phillies lightly threatened. Wheeler comes in. We was already in at this point. He walks Austin Riley and then Ozzie Albees. Great series for Ozzie Albees, by the way. Yeah. Much more lined Ozzie Albees. Friend of the podcast beloved. I love Ozzie. I know he has been great this year. I understand that. Awesome series. And that was a tank. I mean, 419 feet with it. And that was left handed Ozzie Albees, not his better side historically off of Zach Wheeler. And like, boy, that was fun. He absolutely and I like baseball. So yes, Ozzie Albees hit a 400 foot homer. But do you know the best part about Ozzie hitting a 400 foot homer, Brad Roland? Oh, I don't. Um, Joey Vato was a hell of a baseball player. This will okay. I've got to go ahead.
I don't know if broadcasting is is the right post retirement move for Joey Vato. Because quite literally 90 seconds before Ozzie hit an absolute tank off of Zach Wheeler. Joey Vato in the dugout says, I don't think the Braves are going to get. They're not going to score again tonight. They're not going to get to Wheeler. And Ozzie just launches it. Even CJ and Kowski, who the four times he got to talk all night, he was by far the best part of the broadcast. But even CJ kind of jabbed Joey Vato a little bit and said, Hey, Joey, maybe, maybe don't look at your, your Twitter mentions anytime soon after, after that. But yeah, I mean, it was, I don't know about Joey Vato, but I digress. Um, awesome moment for Ozzie Albees. You said it had a really good series put together some really good at bats. Uh, was pretty patient up there too. Uh, drew a couple of walks in the series did a really good job of making Philadelphia's pictures work. So credit to Ozzie, you go up five, nothing at that point. Like you just keep building that cushion. We knew at some point, Philadelphia was going to try to fight back with their season on the line.
And into the Braves credit, they just kept kept on adding those insurance runs, which are just so, so valuable. Yeah, a free run lead is far different than a fiber on lead. That seems very obvious, but it really is a very different thing. Uh, last thing on Ozzie, Ozzie finish a series. It's only three games with a 1427 OPS. 1.427 OPS in the series for Ozzie. That's pretty good against anybody. Um, the fifth inning, Grand Homes had some trouble, which you alluded to earlier. And with shoreboard, Harper looming not too far away. It was too on and nobody out. And I got a little worried again. But within, I blew up seven pitches. He got a fly out and double play. That was a huge swing in the game. Um, should we take a second right now to shout out Matt Olson, who I think had like six different scoops in this game to varying degrees, either to save, to save errors or to make, I mean, that's always great over there. But uh, people were noticing, including us that that was, uh, it was a great, Matt Olson defensive game.
Even if there was, there was like a memorable Matt Olson play like by himself. But boy, I think he, he, he did some work over there defensively, including on that double play, which is what reminds me now. Matt did a fantastic job. And really the whole team tonight, the boys were playing some defense. There was some really well hit baseball as Mauricio DuBon had a sick play up the middle to stop. It would have been a single and then Matt made that great play to scoop it. Another ball that was rocketed, right to DuBon and he kind of blocked it. I think he ended up ultimately blocking it with like his forearm. Or his wrist to keep the ball in front of him. There was some Bryce Harper. It was hit well. Schwarbo was on first base. So if you don't get in front of that ball, who knows where the inning goes? So yeah, credit to Matt, credit to the defense. Really, I mean, even Grant Holmes had that one play where he had to awkwardly come off the mound. And he kind of bobbled that ball. And in the moment, it was like, Oh no, oh no. Oh no. He's going to bobble this thing and he's going to throw it down the first baseline. But Grant made a really good play to prevent chaos from happening. So yeah, the boys played some really good defense tonight. Throughout the game, they really did.
That was it was pretty much flawless defensively, even with some errant throws that Matt managed to save. So that's good. In the sixth, they let Holmes start the inning against the top of the order. He got Tray Turner out and then he gave it a hard hit single to Schwarbo. And that was time for Grant to leave the game. Were you okay with that at that point? Falling out was probably the right moment. Get him out of there. And they go to Robert's Morris. So Robert's Morris still alive. Good to see Robert. I know he warmed up last night, but got to have gotten a playoff game. He allowed a double to Harper that was an RBI double. It was credit credit it to Holmes as far as the run. I don't think it was awful. A key was I thought I thought Tours looked fine to me. Maybe you disagree, but Harper's going to be just sometimes for a double. It's going to happen. And then it was an RBI ground out that gave up the run. I don't know. I thought I thought Swaras was fine. And they only asked me to get two outs, which I think was probably because they want to be careful with his arm. But what did you make of Robert's Morris as postseason debut? Yeah. The only thing I was really curious is if they were going to send it back out there for another inning, but they're being cautious and careful.
And I think by the actions of Walt Weiss, these first three games, they are still being cautious with Robert. If this game was played in May when he was like perfect out there and unhittable, yeah, we would have seen Robert Swaras probably in the seventh or eighth inning in all three games. But we didn't, you know, I just don't think he's there at this point, but the loss, he looks good. And hopefully now that he's been able to get into three games, yeah, Friday off, we'll see what Saturday and Sunday hold in the NLDS, but hopefully Swaras is able to get back in there and maybe get a little more swing and miss. Cause that's kind of the one thing he has not had a ton of even in a pretty small sample since coming back. Yeah, I agree. But I think give you a little bit of confidence. I thought he looked fine. I don't know. Again, I don't know. We allow the run, but it was, it was okay. Offensively, it got quieter, but I will say with two outs in the sixth, Wheeler walked both Riley and Ozzy on 10 combined pitches. Dom Smith's and Lynn Sanity run did come to an end to end that in the sixth, but I made no to this now, I want to wish what I'm saying.
It about the pages in the lineup, about how we've criticized them plenty for being too freewheeling, too free swinging, not patient enough bad approaches at times. I stand by that today. They saw 112 pitches in the first six endings of the game today. And they didn't score that any for a great example. I think they faced like 20 pitches in that, maybe 25 pitches in that ending without scoring a run. But like, if you, especially as a team in Philadelphia, that basically not madly, Borlai announced with his moves that they did not trust their bullpen at all outside of Durran. If you know that and the Braves, I think had the advantage of the bullpen. I know they blew the game last night. I get it. But like, if you know that, working counts is even more important. Having these these, these Zach Wheeler on three days rest, clearly was not a hundred percent today. Making them throw 70 pitches, like gets them out of the game faster and gets you into the bullpen faster. And like, I just want to say, like, it was notable to me that the Braves actually had a patient approach for most of this game. I mean, they would draw five walks, six walks, something like that.
I have it in front of me now. Yeah, they have five, five walks in the game. You know, it wasn't 10 walks, but like, to me, it felt different. I don't know what that means. Anything, maybe I'm wrong. It felt different. They're a very patient against Nola and Wheeler and the rest of the Phillies bullpen. And that's what, man, that's why I think we were so frustrated, even like game one when they won it. They were so hyper aggressive against Lazardo and it's like, fellas, take a pitch. Take two, you know, like worst case, he's going to, you're going to be down Oh two. And sure you don't want to live Oh two all the time, but maybe throws two out of zone. You know, big, big league pitchers are erratic at times, especially in high pressure, pressure situations. And when they're tired and when they're not on their normal routines. Yeah, so I thought the approach tonight was really strong. They had a great game plan against Nola. I thought even against Wheeler, they did a good job. Very few short ed bats against him. They had the big homer from Ozzie and even when, you know, that you mentioned Dom Smith struck out there, but they, they rallied there and made him work hard. So there was nothing easy tonight for the Philadelphia pitching staff.
And, and I don't think it's a coincidence they were going to get three big homeruns tonight. Yeah, it was a lot of fun to watch that, especially after again, criticizing it. Repeatedly, it's like, oh, they, not that they've listened to us, but it's like, oh, that's, this is, this is much. Let's just say, I'll call it refreshing. That's the word I'll use on this particular night. All right, Scott, there's more to talk about, including another homer, some more bullpen work, Chris sale coming in to close this one out, which made that a lot, honestly, a lot of fun. At the end, we're going to all of that more of your work, more partners on today's show. We hear that football season is here. I expected that to happen honestly at some point but it wasn't 100% sure about it. He threw a lot of pitches, the previous two games, wasn't his best self. But once they got swarrowed out of there after two outs, they kind of had to have puts as pitch because there's only somebody guys who trust down there. And I thought he looked better, good, fine. Like one, two, three ending didn't blow anybody away. But for a kid this young is he is to have a confidence builder. And of course not a lot of run. And importantly Scott, you and I set it over under last night on the podcast of pictures used at five and a half. We took the over. We got that one right. It's yeah, baby. Only I put $10 million on it Brad. We could retire and just do podcasts from I'm not sure that was available to us. That's $10 million on maybe maybe it was. But no, it's serious. Like Fuentes, not that he was the goat the first two games, but it wasn't his best two day period. Allowed some loud contact and some runs. So they're gonna look spoiler.
They're gonna need the fully operational didier Fuentes. I think it's the daughters. So having that ending to put in his back pocket probably helped. I was curious of the three relievers. So Fuentes, Lee and Iglesias, those three pitch games one and two. And I was curious tonight who was going to get in there a third time. If any of them, of course didier looked really good. I'm glad that he had a successful kind of quiet ending was good to see. Of course, no Dylan Lee tonight and Chris sale closed it out. So you did not have to go to rice, I'll Iglesias for a third night in a row. Those things now that we can realistically think about the NLDS, things like that can pay dividend that you feel like you probably have a Glacias should you need him in game one of the next round. So yeah, good to see for didier, confident kid, talented kid. Sometimes you just make one pitch and it doesn't go your way. And unfortunately, the Braves are able to overcome some of the unfortunate moments from didier and Dylan Lee out of the bullpen the last couple days. For sure, the last bit of offense was Matt Olson's two out home run in the seventh to make it six to one.
A similar tank to what Aussie hit a couple of pretty much no daughters from those two guys. That's always fun. Matt capping off a defensive performance with an offensive contribution. They were seemingly going to Chris sale to begin the eighth inning until Matt Olson homer. Sale was alone in the bullpen during the bottom of the seventh. Which I thought was interesting. People are getting excited about it on the broadcast. They go to Dodd. I'll stop here. What did you think of all of that? We'll talk about what sale ended up doing. But would you have you sale in that spot? I know they were up by four. They weren't up by one. What did you think about that whole experience? So before Matt Olson's home run, I was in favor of bringing in Chris sale because the game was closer. It was still, you know, that's a one swing difference in score. Right. You give up a grand slam. The game is tied. But when Matt Olson hit the homer to make it six to one and Shouts to Matt Olson, who has the, I think maybe the best home run celebration in baseball with the disgust on Matt's
face when he hits a no doubt homer. Like how dare you throw me that baseball Brad Roland. I am going to hit this thing 415 feet. But when they took the extended lead, it thought it made sense to go to Dillon Dodd. And today was a normal throw day for Chris sale. So we should probably mention this because I know there was a lot of confusion or uncertainty about sale. So for people who don't know when starting pictures make a start, they generally have a throw day between starts either on day two or day three. And they throw a bullpen session, you know, 30, 35 pitches, you get your arm going, maybe 10, 15 of them are more of the warm up variety. And then you fire like 15, 20 hard live pitches to keep your arm going. That was today for Chris sale. So it was not a total surprise. I would still anticipate Chris sale is going to start game two of the NLDS, which would be his normal rest, although he did not pitch on normal rest very much all year long. I think he only made two starts all season on normal rest. So we'll keep an eye on that.
But whenever Dodd came in and gave up a little bit of foot traffic on the bases, I have been scored. You have been scored. We have all been scored by the most impossible bad scenarios for this team over the last 35 years in the playoffs. It's like, yeah, let's bring in Chris sale here. Yeah, I mean, Dodd, it's crazy. There were so many seemingly routine fly balls to write field in the series that became trouble or became home runs. I mean, there was the one that became a home that was a deciding home run yesterday. Hill hits this triple off Dodd that everyone thought was a flyout. Like everyone thought that. And it just kept carrying and carrying and run, run, rolled had a weird jump at it and didn't quite couldn't quite pull it in. That ball had a 130 expected batting average off the bat. And then the wind just carried it forever. It seemed like, I don't know, regardless. Dodd didn't panic. Got a sack fly. No problem. But I'm kind of with you. I was okay seeing sale come in there.
Dodd Niggit Schwarber, which is a big out. I have to say Schwarber's terrifying. I love to see that. Bring in sale. He only gets four outs. Importantly, sale for only 21 pitches. So that's right in line with what you said. You know, I have jokes about it. Yes, you're about sale starting for one inning on the podcast. But it's even a shot. It's like a suit like, you know, it made it just made total sense. Like if you need, if the two guys and the Phillies that you're worried about are left handed, you have the best one of the best five pitches in the world on your team. And it's this third day. Like it makes so much sense to have Chris sale pitch in this game. Like I know people don't be like, wait, what's going on here? I'm like, well, you know, it did make sense. And he threw and threw very well. And we're probably just talking about this now. Like just end the game, I guess. Yeah, well, I was going to say, if this was a best of seven and it was one to one, I don't think we would have seen Chris sale tonight. I think you go, Darn. I agree. Yes. Madero is maybe he's reading like, yeah, maybe you have sale ready. If like if it becomes a one or two run game, maybe he is like,
but no, if you're up five, if you're up six to two and you're, you know, yeah, and gave three of a best of five even or a best of seven, he's not coming to the game. Yeah, I don't agree. But tonight I did not blame Walt Lice whenever Dodd, you know, if Dodd would have gotten the first two outs, no drama and then gave up like a two out walk, then then maybe you just ride Dodd for another hitter or two and see where things are at. But yeah, I had no problem with it and as long as this did not put sales game two in jeopardy and I would sure imagine they had a lengthy conversation with Chris before the game today. I'm like, Hey man, if you throw 20 pitches tonight or you conflict, you can go and game two for us on your, your standard rest. I would sure like to think the answer was, yeah, I'll be good before they made the decision to bring in Chris tonight. Well, and I also thought there was a chance because it was Harper, his first batter was Harper with two outs in the eighth. I know there was a chance he was going to get Harper and come out. And they would have maybe gone to a glaciers. Like I thought that was the least possible.
But it became very clear right away if you were watching Chris sale on the broadcast. Oh, he wasn't coming out. He was, he was not going to come out. But I just thought in the moment, I'm like, okay, it's going to be a one batter or a rest of the game. And I wasn't sure and it was the rest of the game. So I would think number since we'll go ahead. Yeah, I was going to say sorry, and on the Chris sale and the one move on. But yeah, I would imagine too. They probably had a number in mind for sale. Like if things got funky in the ninth inning, I don't think he would have gotten up to like 40, 45 pitches tonight. I think you would have seen rice, eliglacious or somebody else. If things got hairy in the ninth, thankfully other than a Alec Bome single that was pretty harmless. No other damage. I'm sick of Alec Bome. I'll tell you that right now. Sick of me too. But hey, guess what? One of them for a while. Couple of fun numbers and nuggets on Chris sale. It was sales first relief appearance since he closed out the 2018 World Series for Boston. That's eight years ago. Also, he became the first pitcher in MLB history to throw both the first pitch and the last pitch
for a team in a postseason series since he did it in 2018 for the Red Sucks. Also, I'm sure you've seen some video like I have Scott. Some of the crowd pop for sale coming in the game in the eighth inning. Oh, baby. My event is loud as the home run pops. Which is crazy when you think about it. It wasn't like a swing in the bat and everybody pumps their fists and goes crazy. Like you could hear it rumbling on the radio broadcasts on a TV broadcast. Some of the videos like people love Chris sale and Scott so do I, to be honest. But it was like that's probably the moment I wish I could have been there for the most, which might sound crazy. But like having a crowd kind of organically like, oh, that's Chris sale. We're going to go. Yeah, that's right now because that's our guy. That was fun. Yeah, the roar in the crowd. I want to talk to Steven who made the drive over today to the game. I mean, just to hear his perspective, I know there were a ton of people who made who bought tickets today with it being the eight o'clock start.
You know, just the roar of the crowd was awesome. So great, especially when they put him up on the video board. It's like, yeah, baby, that's what the playoffs are about. Your best Chris sale, a future first ballot Hall of Famer against Bryce Harper, a future Hall of Famer. My best, your best, let's go. Let's see what happens. And you know, credit to Bryce Harper for not running. I don't think he knew that Drake Baldwin, the ball got away from Drake, which was fortunate because Drake didn't know where the ball was. So I think Bryce could have gotten to first if he immediately ran and didn't know about it. You know, the crowd also probably played a part of that because it was so noisy. I'm sure people in the Phillies dug out were screaming at Bryce to run to first base. And he didn't hear them because of how noisy the park was tonight. So that can be, yeah, it's just, it's a big advantage of how jacked up the crowd was tonight. And then actually one more note on Chris sale. So they're interviewing Walt Weiss right now, Wiley Ballard. And they talked about pitching Chris sale in the game tonight.
And this is what Walt Weiss said. Quote, Chris was going to have to initiate that. And literally as soon as I stepped in my office today, Chris was sitting in my chair. He said, I feel unbelievable. I'm ready to go. And quote, that's a dog. That is a that is a capital DAWG dog. That is, Chris sale is the ultimate gamer. I love Chris sale. What a trade. One of the greatest trades in Atlanta Braves franchise history. He is just a maniac. I love Chris sale. The day he no longer throws baseballs for this team will be a very, very sad day. Yeah, one of the best trades in baseball history. I mean, the other reason why it's not like a top 10 trade in history baseball is that it's just how old he is. And it won't be one better go forever. But I mean, what a ridiculous transaction. Anyway, yeah, I don't have much to add else. It was fun to watch him torture Harper. I mean, you mentioned in the cabinet running, he absolutely destroyed Harper in that play.
Oh, yeah, he threw four sliders. He basically made Harper look silly. And that's an extra bit of fun for Braves fans to hit rice Harper, etc. So that's all the game stuff that I have. I mean, we can talk about we'll save some of the other stuff. Like it was a rough week for Drake Baldwin. Not the time to talk about that right now probably, but he had a rough one. You know, some of the other things that happened. Do I want to offer for today? Harris redemption. We talked about that. I don't know. We can leave it there for now. It is one of this. Scott, anything else you'd like to add before we do a quick look at the upcoming series? And by the way, what's your second right now? I believe the boys, Sean and Steven are going to record a dedicated Dodgers preview episode that will go up sometime on Friday evening. Ish, Steven and I think is driving somewhere between Atlanta and Alabama right now. So I don't know when that's going to come. But that's the plan. We will have another episode in your feed before the game on Saturday, which is game one at LDS.
And they'll just add and then we can look at the Dodgers a little bit. Just one more gigantic tip of the cap to Ray Kerr. What a great story. One day, you know, the Braves do the alumni Sundays. One day, Ray Kerr is going to come back and I hope he gets a big time ovation. And people shake his hand and say thank you for at least for the first one. He threw a three and a third, three and two third innings tonight, putting the team on his back. He did his job. The last thing on earth you want after you get that early three, three nothing lead from Michael Harris is if Kerr would have gone out there and given it right back. All of a sudden you lose the vibes. The momentum has shifted. Kerr was so good. A massive moment. I don't think anyone would have blamed him if he was a little too amped up and couldn't find the zone because his heart was going a million miles an hour. He was just locked in from the very first pitch. And did a fantastic job. A massive reason why the Braves were able to advance tonight. For sure, Ray Kerr three home runs and a hall of fame were closing the game out as a
nice little formula on a Thursday evening to beat the archer. I will fill it up the affiliates. We definitely enjoy that one. We'll forget it. And it does. I have to say Scott and we'll save some of the takes for later. It lessens a little bit of the little bit of the pressure against the Dodgers. Obviously you want to win the series. You want to win the whole thing. But the fact that they beat the Phillies in that way does make everything else feel a little bit just settled just a little. Absolutely. A little bit stuttles. Yes. Some of the some of the real downside outcomes are off the table after the. After 2022 and after 2023, if they we just we could not lose. I said it on the preview show. They could not lose this series to the Phillies again. Losing three straight postseason series against your division rivals cannot happen. Quaid to the Braves. It was not always pretty. I think a lot of cardiologists in the greater Atlanta area and the greater southeast are going to get phone calls on on Friday because of all the stress of the last 72 hours. But yeah, they found a way to win. Game three was a ton of fun.
And now you can kind of enjoy it. I know they're set to fly on Friday across the country to LA. You have a little bit of time to enjoy it like the next 12 hours. But then lock in because you have a chance to to throne the back-to-back champions. And at the end of the day, if you want to be the best, what do you got to do? You got to beat the best. And you got to let it fly. It's been their mantra and that will be I'm sure the mantra heading out to Los Angeles. Oh, by the way, blind squirrel. Braves in three prediction right here. Braves in three. Only half this podcast said Braves in three. I'm just saying only half of us had Braves in three. I did not look for it in three. I wonder Braves in two. I was thinking for you. That's because I am an eternal optimist. I never think anything bad is going to happen famously. Eternal Optimist. Braves in two. Should I just Braves in three in LA, right? Like I'm just. Yeah, four home Braves in three. Three of the Dodgers. Call right now. There you go. Okay, so very quickly for people that may not know everything. The NDS is a best of five. So this is best of three.
Just finish that out. Best of five in LA against the Dodgers. Beginning on Saturday. Game one. Is it four PM Eastern time? That's a tough start time. It's a one o'clock start locally in Los Angeles. Obviously you're competing with college football. From the looks of it is the only game, however, that Fox has on Fox, like big Fox broadcast network Fox, which I believe is probably why that game is a four o'clock on Saturday. Yes. Go ahead. And this, I don't know if a lot of our listeners are going to know this. This is insane. In Los Angeles on October 3rd, which is Saturday. The high temperature is 102 degrees. It is like the hottest time ever in Southern California. Yeah, I heard about this earlier today. My brother's in San Diego where it never gets hot. And it's like 95 in San Diego. It's going to be 102 degrees for the day game on Saturday in LA.
You know, if you want to be optimistic, the Braves are probably a little more attuned to playing in the extreme heat. The fans in LA, God knows I'm not sitting out in 101 degrees out in those bleachers and making a lot of noise other than maybe begging for some water. So that's something to keep an eye on. I think Sunday night is or Sunday's game is a later game. So it'll be a little bit cooler. But it is going to be impossibly hot in LA in Southern California over the next few days. Yes, Sunday is game two is 8 p.m. Eastern time, which is still five o'clock local. And it's going to be warm still to your point. Maybe a slight Braves advantage there. Not like you're still on the road, but the Braves are used to playing in that heat. Like it's 100 a lot in Atlanta around the summer. And not so much in LA. So it's all margins at this time of year. We'll let the boys handle the pitching stuff. I think game one is going to be an adventure. The Braves don't have Chris sale or Tommy Malley for game one. So we'll see what's going on with that. But that'll be a bullpen game of some variety who will be on the roster.
I can tell you right now, there'll be more than 11 pictures on the roster. There's only 11 pictures on this roster for the three games here. There's a lot more than 11. Will we see Smith-Shawver? Will we see J.R. Richey? Will we... is there any chance of someone like Bryce Elder or Martin Perez being healthy up to play? Who knows? Lane Thomas. All eyes on Lane Thomas. Can he play? That would really help against left-handed pitching, especially when you face Terrick Scubal at some point. So questions to be asked and answered in the next 36 hours or so. I assume, as you told me earlier, I think you were the one that put this in my attention first. Some order Terrick Scubal and Yamamoto in game one and game two. They're pretty good. So we'll find out. Yes. You have the Braves, man. They drew the short stick because they are seeing some ridiculously good pitching they just saw. I mean, three between Wheeler, Luzardo and Sanchez. Those three are as good as anybody. And now the Dodgers with their unlimited payroll, unlimited budget, all the talent in the world. They have a great pitching staff.
They've also had the advantage of resting everybody for the last week and lining things up. So yeah, it's going to be a challenge for sure. Hopefully the Braves riding high, they have some momentum. There's always this time of year, the rest versus rust. The Braves have been on the wrong side of the rest argument. If you want to call it that, maybe they can go into LA with some momentum. And I mean, even if you can split those first two, I mean, you would love, love, love, love to split those first two games and then get back home and see what happens. I agree strongly. And look, this is not the downplaying. The Braves are going to be underdogs in the series. That is what no one's picking the Braves. Like the Dodgers will be favored. There's nothing wrong with that. That's the Dodgers, they're playing at home. They have the rest of it. They had a better record this year. This is still a winnable series. I'm looking at Calshire right now. The Braves have a look, guess what's got. The Braves have a higher than 0% trading margin at Calshire right now. It's a winnable series for the Braves. Like a winnable series. Are they saying?
Yeah, there is, I mean, this isn't even that. I mean, it's probably 40%. Like it's not a situation. This is baseball guys. There have been plenty of series that I've covered in basketball where one team has like a 1% chance to win the series, like legitimate coming into the series. This is not that. Baseball and if the best of five, the Braves, it's probably 40, 45, 46, something like that. Go in the series. Still, but look, I think it's still game one. If they can still game one without a pitcher that they even trust on the mound and you're facing, I'm not saying it's going to happen, but hey, you're right, go split and we'll see what happens. Again, we're not going to do a preview before you and I can do a preview before game one arrives. I feel okay. I feel pretty good. I mean, it's not like you can't be in a commanding position, but with the vibes that they just had, with the way that the bass kind of woke up at times, the patience that we showed today, etc, etc. I feel about as good as I could have possibly felt right now at midnight on Friday morning,
heading into, based on what happened yesterday, you can't feel better than this and roll it into Saturday and beyond. What's that? Right, baby. Covering baseball. Yeah, let's have some fun. I don't want to say it's house money. I don't want to pretend like we're now just laying down. You take care of the Phillies. Now you have a day off to travel and then get right back after it. Let's see what can happen. How sweet would it be if the Braves could be the team to finally de-throne the Dodgers with their billion dollar payroll? They've won the last two world series. They've won what? Three of the last six if you want to count the COVID year in there. There's a lot of history, playoff history between these teams. It'll be the fourth time they will meet in the postseason going back to 2018. See what happens, man. Go out there. Work the count like you did tonight. I think it's going to be imperative against Yamamoto and scuba. See what happens. Keep hitting homers. Maybe the heat plays a factor with how long the starting pictures can go.
That would also probably benefit the Braves. It's going to be real hot at Dodger Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. Just see what happens. Leave it all out there. At least for one night, though. Let's enjoy this series win over the Phillies. There were a lot of highs. There were a lot of lows. Three games, it feels like we've all aged about 15 years. But it was just a really well played even series between these two division foes. And I'm really, really happy the Braves. We're able to find a way and exercise some of those demons. Yeah, you and me both. It was a lot of fun. And look, it's different players. A lot of them. But five years ago, I'm the one of the world series. The Braves beat the Dodgers. Beat the 106 win Dodgers in the 2021 NLCS. Just saying. That's, you know, that happened five years ago. All right. All right. It's got let's get out of here. Thanks for listening, everybody. Please follow Scott Coleman's musings. At Scott, Scott, hole 55 on Twitter. Just firing. Just absolute takes just in a zone right now on Twitter. You are unlocked in, baby.
After 162, I've got the reps. My thumbs are good. You know, I'm ready to fire off those tweets. But man, I tell you what, Braves country. I know Braves country is big and vast. And there's fans all over the place, right? All over the country, all over the world. Man, I mean, this fan base was just so locked in the last three days. All time, we're at Truist Park tonight. Just a lot of fun. So shout out to everybody for checking out the show as well. I want to thank you again. I know we did it at the end of the two of the game, too show. But thank you, thank you. Thank you for watching this show. Brad said it a moment ago, but Steven and Sean are going to have a series preview with the Dodgers. I want to hear all from Steven about his experience at the game tonight. Sounded like it was just an absolute madhouse at Truist. So a lot of good stuff on the horizon. And hey, we wake up on Saturday and the Braves are still going. That's right. So please, please, please take a second right now.
