Welcome into Lounge. I'm Ryan Mink, here with Garrett Downing. And we heard from head coach Jesse Minner following the very event's first loss in this new era as they fell to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. So we're going to take a deeper dive after hearing from him

as he looked back on the game after reviewing the film and talking with his coaches, following the loss as well as take a little quick look ahead to Brazil in this episode. So Garrett, this is the first adversity that this team has faced on their Jesse Minner. It's been all, we've been all really excited this summer. I'm still excited about this team, but this is the first kind of time that they got punched a little bit and he got a bounce back from that. Of course, we all knew this was going to happen eventually, but now you're dealing with it and it happened in an all too familiar way and earlier than you would have liked, but here we are. Yeah, it's a surprising result and the Ravens did not expect to find themselves in this situation. I don't think Ravens fans felt like this was going to be the result, especially when you were up at that point in the game going into the fourth quarter and you felt good about kind of this team and their ability to hold on to that lead. However, this is a test and I have felt like the foundation has been laid over the course of the last several months

by Jesse Minner and this coaching staff that when they face adversity, they're going to handle it the right way. And so I feel confident that I actually remember when we sat down with Jesse at the start of training camp here on the podcast and talk with him about sort of big picture items setting kind of the culture of the team, setting the direction, the narrative, all that stuff around your team. And one of the things he made a point of is like they want to build a connection and relationships so that when adversity strikes, how do they respond to it? And like that kind of caught my attention at the time because even at that point he was thinking about if there's going to be challenges that they face over the course of a season, you need to be in position to respond to it the right way. I think this Raven's team will, the veteran players really kind of stress that point after the game on Sunday, Rokuwan, Mark Andrews. So I think the Ravens will be in a good spot but they definitely feel like there's plenty of things that they have to clean up and that's what their focus is. I focused on right now. Jesse Minner said,

we'll attack it, we'll own it. We're not in the blaming business. And I thought after seeing his first press conference following a loss, it was calm, cool, collected like we expect from Jesse Minner, but also you felt the standard is high and he was pretty blunt about how they did not meet the standard in that game I thought, you know? And he wasn't in the excuse making business. It was pretty straightforward about where they had shortcomings in this game I thought. And so I thought it was impressive showing. First press conference following a loss. Yeah, this was, I guess it has a different tone to it because up until this point, like there's been no losses. It's been all positive. Everything is felt great. And so it had a bit of a different tone to it, but it also matched what we firt from players in talking about how he has a standard and he corrects things and he's like matter of fact about it and focus on the details, calls it what it is, not too overly emotional, I guess about it, but also calls a spade a spade.

It says like this is an issue that we have to correct and here's how we're going to go about doing that. Yeah, absolutely. So it was our first look at that. And obviously one of the big talking points was the inability to hold a fourth quarter lead, which was something that bled, you know, that we saw too often in the John Harboh era. And like I said, this happens in the NFL, right? But it's particularly painful because it had some of the same elements of past losses. In the fourth quarter, right? You have penalties that are a problem. You have officiating controversy. That's a problem. You have defensive lapses, offense stalls out. You have just turnovers, right? I mean, a lot of the same kind of elements that are troubling. And so Jesse Menter said, look, we're going to find ourselves in this position a lot because I think we're a good team. We're going to have leads. We're going to find themselves in the position of holding, you know, exactly. They don't want to find themselves in the position of blowing leads. They expect to find themselves in the position of having leads.

That's correct. And so we need to play to the standard. We didn't play up to our standard. And I thought it was notable that he said, he felt like players were pressing a little bit. And that is something that, I don't know that we've heard that before said, but this team knows the narrative, right? They know these veterans have been down this road, he said too many times. And trying to make a play as opposed to just leaning on those fundamentals, leaning on what you've worked on all summer and letting the plays happen, that's kind of, that was what Jesse pointed to after the Ravens first blown lead in his tenure. Like, I know that there's certainly going to be a connection made. And he even said it on Sunday after the game that, look, I know it's going to be the story, same old story around this team, given up that fourth quarter lead. I also do think to an element, it's a little bit unfair to connect this coaching staff with what's happened in the past,

because none of these coaches, the majority of them, we're not here for those blown leads that happened over that course of time. A lot of the players were. So I get the connection, but he's being connected to something that, in large measure, this coaching staff really had nothing to do with. But I understand that's going to, it's the same team, a lot of the same players. So with that said, he also made the point that, to a certain degree, this defense is looking for its identity. And I found that kind of interesting, because to me, it felt like the identity is kind of established as a defense. Like, they're going to be a team that is, that gets after the quarterback has an excellent secondary, has a lot of heavy veteran presence, has a great play collar in their head coach. So I just feel like the defensive identity is not something I've questioned, I guess, at all. But for him to kind of talk about how that's something that they need to find early in the season, Tray Hendrixson actually said the same thing after the game. I just found that to be an interesting note. Yeah, he said that in reference to a question about Malachi Stark,

so you did not have his best game. And Jesse Miner said, honestly, I think we're all chasing things a little bit. Really need to figure out what our identity on defense is, as far as what we're trying to do. That's my job. I have a lot of confidence in the guys that we have. And so, yeah, that's kind of a striking comment coming from a defensive head coach in the defensive play collar, right? Like, I think we all expect that this is going to be a really good defense by season's end, but it's not there yet. It's a work in progress. And he was pretty open about that, and transparent. And, you know, after the opening drive in Indianapolis, Jesse Miner pointed to himself and said, I didn't do a good enough drive on that opening set. And we were kind of on our heels. You know, after this game, it felt like tackling was a problem, certainly mistack. I think the mist tackles is what seemed to bother Jesse Miner, predominantly in this one. You know, the Ravens forced them into a quick pass kind of game.

And by virtue of their pressures, including Blitz calls. And when they're throwing the ball down quickly, getting the ball quickly, you need to rally and tackle short of the sticks. They didn't do a good enough job of that, including in some critical situations that let the Saints kind of off the hook, including on some third and long, second and long situations. That's a problem. And so, yeah, I think that Jesse is a little bit frustrated with how this defense has played in the early part of this season so far. It's interesting though, because I would say for seven of the eight quarters of this season, I think the defense has been good. They gave it a long drive out of the gate against the Colts, but then they settled in right after that. And they were good for three out of the four quarters in this game against the Saints. And it was that fourth quarter where they had two long drives that they allowed. And so, like, if I look at the season in totality for this defense, I feel really good about it. It's just that it's that one quarter, which like, look, it matters. I'm not trying to wash it away and say like, hey, seven, you know, seven out of eight.

It's not too bad. No, it matters and that ended up costing them the game on Sunday. But I think in totality for this defense, I actually feel like they've played pretty well to start the season. But clearly not good enough to get the job done against New Orleans. I don't think it's up to Jesse Mentor's standard, which is a very high standard for this defense. When you look at what it should be given the players that they have on this defense, given the defensive mind and the scheme and the coaching that they have on this defensive unit, it should be a light style defense. And it wasn't at home, you know, and the Saints have played makers and I thought Tyler Schuck played a great fourth quarter especially. The Ravens didn't play to their standard in that fourth quarter. And he's going to hold that standard and be pretty upfront about it. Yeah. He also talked about, and this was something coming out of the game too, like, the Russian coverage needs to marry together. And that could kind of speak to some of that, the quick passing game. If you're getting the ball, if the quarterbacks get out of the, rid of the ball quick,

then you need to be there to tackle a guy short of the sticks and not allow them in a third and long situation to pick up a big game for yards after the catch. Like that just can't be the scenario that plays out. Yeah, absolutely. Check down routes, like those are all things that like, those need to be stopped for short games. Right. It wasn't the best game for the Ravens safeties. And now, like I was best game, Jalen Hawkins didn't have his best game either. Had an interception opportunity early in the game that he didn't get. That's just what it was. I mean, they had a wide open touchdown in the fourth quarter that on a broken coverage, just left the guy wide open, doubled the wrong guy. And so, you know, they need better play from that. And they need better tackling. That's part of the safety play also is coming down and limiting those short gains. So that's that is what it is. They need to improve on that. You mentioned Malachi. One thing I'll point out there is he was asked specifically about Malachi. He took the question to a little broader. Like you mentioned in terms of the overall defense and team looking for that identity. But on Malachi specifically, he did say, I've got a lot of confidence in Malachi.

Starks. And so I don't think yesterday was Malachi's best game. I do think that he'll bounce back the Ravens feel like he's going to be a really good player. You talk with players on this defense and they feel confident about the player that Malachi can be. And the moments that he's had. So I wouldn't over react to that game from him. I think he can be better. Wasn't his best showing. And I think he will be better. Yeah. A couple of the defensive notes that I want to get to here. Jesse did say that Cheeto Uzia. He had a conversation with him here. Money morning Cheeto only played one defensive snap in this game. He does want to get him more action. It's really predominantly. It's been the Nate Wiggins and Marlon Humphrey show. They played Nate's played almost every single snap. Marlon not far from it. That has not been a rotation on the outside. And Jesse Miner does want to get more from Cheeto Uzia. The interesting thing there is like, so where is that? Because both Nate and Marlon are playing well. It's not like either of them are getting beat consistently. I think part of it's just keeping guys fresh, especially Marlon. You know, that would be my expectation.

I was wondering if that means moving Marlon more into the slot. And then does that mean Kyle Hamilton back at safety? You know, it all maybe. Right. I mean, in the first week, it was Keon Martin predominantly in the slot. Then Chandler Rivers played many more snaps than Keon did here against the Saints. And I thought played pretty well. He had a tackle for loss. It wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good showing for a rookie debut. But yeah, maybe it's Marlon playing a little bit more in the slot and moving Kyle back a little bit more to help with those. That tackling underneath. And the playmaking over the top, I don't know. That could be part of the solution. Yeah, it's just interesting. Like, because I think overall, like the Ravens are getting good play from the corners. And so you're like, so where, if you're going to see more snaps from Cheeto, and I like Cheeto, I think it's a really good play. I was glad the Ravens resigned. But where are those, whose expense are those snaps coming? I don't know. Yeah. Yeah, I think that's a very fair question. And then another one, Trent and Simpson.

I thought he played a really great game and Jesse Minerick concurred. He said that one. Yeah, he said that he told his defensive staff that Trenton in his opinion has been one of their best defensive players. So far this season through both games, Trenton had a particularly good game against the Saints. And really would have stopped that two-point conversion had it not been for a holding penalty called against Jalen Hawkins in the back of the answer. I watched that one by the way. That was pretty soft holding penalty. I digress. And so Trenton is playing great, which now Teddy Buchanan is not far away from returning. But Jesse is basically like, yeah, well, I'm not looking for ways to take Trenton off the field. Yeah. That's a good problem. But Trenton's going to continue to play a lot because he's playing well. Yeah. It reminds me a little bit of what happened with Patrick Queen. That's a little bit of a different trajectory. Patrick Queen was a first round pick here and kind of started right away. Trenton has been in the starting line up out of the starting lineup during his time here. But it's his fourth season. So it's a contract year for him. And it felt like that was the time where I guess you could see the light really came on for Patrick Queen.

He had his best season in his last season here. And what he did so well that year was like he just was a missile. Like he was flying all over that defense, getting in the backfield, making plays in the flat, really sure tackling. And then he used like his great athleticism to his advantage. I'm seeing similar things from Trenton Simpson. And when the Ravens drafted him, like the scouting report read very similarly to some of the things that you would say about Patrick Queen. Like this guy, he just got a nose for the football. He's got great sideline to sideline speed. Great athlete. All those things are similar with with Queen. And so with Trenton, like they've moved him around a little bit. He's played even at some outside linebacker, middle linebacker, weak sideline backer. It's been a little bit of a rotation for him in his career. So he settled into that spot next to Rokwan. And I think made the most of his opportunities early in the year. This is a guy that when we went around the locker room before the season started asking everybody who they break out player of the year was going to be their prediction. Trenton had the most votes among anybody on defense.

Chikobie Lane had the most votes period, but Trenton was the top defensive pick. So this isn't coming out of nowhere. He's been building momentum over the course of the summer and really kind of proven it to his coaches and teammates. Just ask Rokwan. Like Rokwan every time he gets asked about Trent and points out, I think two things. One, this is guys in a contract year and that often can mean you get the most out of a player. Pressures on it. Yeah, pressure's on. Trent has been a highly motivated guy who's been a hard worker throughout his career. I don't know that like, but sure. But I think it's more about Trenton that he's now in his fourth year and the light bulbs coming on. That's more what I think it is. He's just maturing as a player. And yes, it's also a contract. I don't think that the contract is like his driving motivation doesn't hurt. Sure. But Rokwan's made that point multiple times when asked about it and also stressed that like this guy, the athleticism and the way that he's looked this year, like he's going to have a great season. Like, Trent, but Rokwan has said this guy looks better than he ever has. And I think that we're seeing that play out.

I think Trenton's also again looked really good. His all he's always looked like. He's been great shape. He's just a rocked up dude. I think it's mostly in his head. I think he's kind of figured it out better now. I also think that these Ravens coaches and Jesse Minner and Tyler Sanseucci are both great coaches. And they've kind of found a good role and a way to kind of tailor what they're asked, you know, the playing to a middle linebacker. Right. They're playing to his strengths and the defense is clicking with him more than. Yeah. And he's making the most of the opportunity. So he's been kind of a bright spot. I would say for sure for this defense early in the season. A couple other things that want to mention related to the game, kind of big talking points of storylines coming out of it. A lot of conversation around the offenses, third and one, deep shot to Chris Moore, then the punt at that point on fourth down. So let's go through both of these things. Jesse Minner was asked about that. Kind of the question was, do you say to Declan Doyle, the offensive coordinator and play caller,

hey, this is a two down situation. This is a one down situation. Before, before third down, do you say if we don't get this, then we're going to go four down, so know that. So like you might take a shot knowing that you're going to run it on fourth down, for example. Right. And Jesse said those conversations are ongoing. He didn't specify whether before that one, he said, hey, we're not going for it here. And also made the point that it felt more like a one and a half situation there than a one. Yeah. It was a long one. A long one. And so that that factors into the decision making process as well in terms of where you, whether you go for it there. Also, he said that overall, he felt like his defense was playing well. They'd just given up a touchdown drive. Yes. But he felt like that was the anomaly. He didn't see another one coming on the heels of that and didn't want to give them a short field. He basically was saying, yeah, if we don't get it, give it to him here. You know, and then we go for it on fourth down and get stuff. We're giving them the ball at 35 pun it. Make them go the distance of the field again on our defense. Now they ended up doing that.

But he thought that the defense was playing better than that, that they weren't going to allow that. Well, they only he was right. I mean, that was the first touchdown they had all game. So you're not thinking, all right, they're going to come back and do it again. Yeah. Exactly. And so that was that kind of speaks to my point earlier that like I feel like this defense has been playing well again, fourth quarter aside. Now he didn't also say, of course, there's plenty of fans that are saying, and that situation third and one, Derek counter just gave Derek counter to the ball, get another set of downs, move the chains, and then keep the clock moving and then just live to fight another day rather than take the deep shot, try to get it all back in one play. You could go that route that like I totally understand that didn't work out. I think Jesse's he didn't go through the individual kind of play calls and say, yeah, that was a bad one. This was a good one. Yeah, he's he doesn't want to play revisionist history. That's what we all do. And he's basically, I don't see the point of that. It doesn't service us. It's not going to change the game. I don't really see the point of like questioning play calls. Every time you have a loss, people nitpick every call and they go through,

well, I didn't why did Derek and really have five runs in the second half or whatever, right? That's going to happen. I can just tell you right now after Jesse Metters first press conference, he's not going to want to really play ball. Also, like I think that those conversations can happen behind closed doors, not on a press conference setting of just questioning play calls. Absolutely. He missed that. I don't think that's really like the way that you want to operate is after your first loss of saying like 100% bad call there. I don't think that's the right way to go about it. 100% yeah. So I mean, look, all this stuff and we've said this many times in years past two, there's a lot of factors that go into this, right? Like if you look at the second half play scripts, it wasn't like there are a bunch more opportunities to run Derek Henry. Like penalties that put him in first, second and long, third and long. Like not, you're not going to be running Derek Henry in those scenarios. I think the third one that's a legitimate play to call play call to say, should we have run Derek Henry there? Totally, that's fair. Like, you know, and they maybe they would have picked it up.

Most likely they would have the way they're running. But also they had a pretty darn good shot at a big play there. You go back and watch that. Rashad Bateman was popping open wide open too. If Lamar had a quarter of a second longer to hold back that throw, Rashad Bateman was going to be wide open for a 20 plus yard gain. Right? And Chris Moore was one on one deep versus a cornerback. Like had a step on the guy. He made a great throw, D.B. caught up and made a great play to break it up. Like it wasn't a bad play call. It didn't work. But we can have the debate. We can see both sides of it. Yeah, I agree with you that I don't think that I think the whole Derek Henry second half carries situation is not really a viable discussion after this game. Correct. I know there's been other games in the past where it has been. Exactly. And like this ain't at the top of the list. This is not because I only had four drives in the second half. And the last drive, you're not going to be handing the ball off there when you got to go the length of the field in a minute with no time outs left to score touchdown.

Exactly. And then the other one, you're way behind on the six because of penalties. And you, by the way, threw the ball. I think you, you ran it. Right. Had a penalty, ran it through it to Derek Henry. Try to get him in like a screen. Yeah. Got a penalty call back. Now you're in that long behind, you're behind the chains. You're not going to run him in that situation. Yeah. Exactly. And then you ran him on the other one. And then you ran him on the other one. That's the third and one. I know. Exactly. So again, I think you're talking about one play there. Literally, you're talking about one play there. Now that could have opened up more opportunities. But I just don't put too much stock into the stat line that people are sharing out there today. And of course, if you hit the third and one. That's the same. You get more chances. Well, no. What I was going to say is if you hit that, which you came extremely close to, then I think you're going to have to go back and get the ball. Well, no, what I was going to say is if you hit that, which you came extremely close to, then everybody's holding, patting everybody on the back today of, man, deck and oil, they're so aggressive. Yeah. I love it. They go for the jugular. Man, I love this.

Right. You know what I mean? Like, that's what all the conversation would have been. It's like, back on their heels, just gave up and touched down. And you go for the jugular with a shot and hit it. Wow. Yeah. And you're probably honestly like a couple inches away from making that play. Yeah. And then you get this hand in there at the last minute. And if he's not able to do that, I think that's a completion to Chris Moore for a huge game. Yep. Completely. So, um, final point coming out of the game, uh, from, from Sunday, is he did talk about special teams. And that wasn't an area where the Ravens had some miscues. Tyler, Luke missed a few goal, uh, got deflected on that miss. Um, and also they gave up a big return right before half that led to three points for the Saints. Six points swing between those two plays. And Jesse was really focused on that return on that on right before half. And a consideration there, and this was the question that he was asking today. Like you just kicked the ball out of the back of the end zone. The Saints get the ball of the 35 there. Would that have been a better way of going about it? At that time, the Saints had all three timeouts.

And so he made the point like, yes, you could just kick it out of the end zone. And then give him at the ball of the 35 and maybe they just. They run it out and to go to the locker room. But with three timeouts, they're probably trying to get about 20 yards to give themself a feelable shot. You don't have to go very far if you're already at the 35. And the hope is you, you kick it back there run five six seven seconds off the clock on the return. Pin him inside the 30 and you've already run down some clock at that spot. Maybe they just take the ball into half time and call it a day. But the Ravens gave out the big return. And then of course, the Saints are able to get a few extra yards and kick the feel goal. Yeah, yeah, not a good series. And then on the block feel goal, they had just too much penetration up the middle on that one leads to a block. Which that was a big momentum swing right there. And Ravens kind of had, they had multiple chances within this game to extend the lead or kind of finish the game off. And they just didn't do it. Yeah. So. And then lastly, the final series there for the offense, the interception that Lamar through at the end of the game.

Again, we covered this in the post game podcast or shot Bateman and Lamar Jackson both talked about it after the game. It was the right route. And there's a lot of question of like, was that the wrong route? Was there confusion on that play? I think there was not confusion. Lamar got pressure from the right side there had to get rid of the ball. You're trying to move the ball down the field and kind of take a shot there because you need to pick up some chunk plays. They needed to touch down. They're trying to move the ball down the field. Lamar got pressure and put it up and ended up getting intercepted. He had to throw the ball sooner than he wanted to. Yeah. And that led to an overthrow before the receiver was in the area where they were trying to hit it. Yeah. Is basically what happened there. Right. And again, the Ravens had, you're running out of time and you need to get seven points. And so they're trying to move the ball down the field there at the end of the game, again, to the end zone. All right. We'll take a quick break. And when we come back, we'll share some more thoughts on the upcoming game of Brazil. ZF hours didn't play Ronnie Stanley didn't play the fourth quarter. Trey Hendrixon play but deal with that finger injury as well as some other injuries coming into this game. Nom de Matabique is still waiting on his debut. And so the Jesse Mints are shared some positive updates on that going into this game in Rio. Yes, said that they feel like there's a good chance that those guys could come back for this game. It almost feels like this game was kind of circled on the schedule. And so for that, I think ZF hours, the names of pop in my head would be ZF hours Nom de Matabique and Teddy Buchanan. I mean, the other guys are playing. I think Ronnie, I think it's a good sign that maybe he'll continue to play with this toe that they're not going to shut them down. That would be my read of what he's saying. Trey is going to continue to play with fingers. But I don't see Trey shutting down because the finger is going to keep it wrapped until it doesn't need to be wrapped seemingly. But to me, I think ZF hours, it wasn't a serious injury. The reports were they, if it were a playoff game, he would have re-entered this game.

Of course, you want to be safe. So they gave him a game off against the Saints. Rashad Bateman stepped up and played, I think, delivered on the number one role. But there's no question that this offense was different with ZF hours in it. Just look at the first half of the Indianapolis game versus all of it since. It's a different offense with him in it. So getting him back against Cowboys would be huge. And then, of course, the debut of Nom de Matabique and Teddy Buchanan, I think that would really help boost this defense, specifically on the defensive line with Nom de. I mean, Matabique feels like he's been knocking on the door here for the past couple of weeks. We've gone into basically the end of each of those weeks feeling like this could be the week. And the Ravens have ruled him out on Friday on that final injury report. Something to watch with him is whether he gets any full practice. Yeah. Laws any full practice? That when the injury report will be an interesting one. If that one comes out with a full participation by Nom de Matabique, it looks like all systems go. Yeah. So hopefully he's able to get out there and play the word that now this was an overall description of the injuries.

And Jesse's had this positive trajectory on those guys. So hopefully Matabique is in that camp and able to play as well as they flowers, like you just mentioned. Now, this game is in Brazil. Ravens got a long flight ahead of them playing in Brazil in Rio against the Cowboys. There was some conversation this week about the field conditions in Rio. And Jesse Mitter was asked about that. He made the point that, look, we're both playing on the same field. Feel confident about the NFL and their ability to get the field ready to play. And so it's all systems go for this game in Rio. The Ravens are excited about the opportunity to play there to have this international game. And so there's going to, you know, there's a lot of eyeballs on this game. And it seems like the Ravens are fired up about the opportunity to go down there. Jeff Sriebick of the athletic talked to NFL field director Nick Papas, who said he has, quote, no concerns about the conditions. At Mara Cona Stadium in Brazil ahead of the game.

And feels like, look, this isn't any different from a week three game in the NFL, you know, on a grass field that's seen two games played on it previously. Of course, it's not a big pristine maybe, but it's a field and it feels like there's no concerns ahead of this game. So I think that story is kind of behind us. I mean, just it seems and just for Ravens fans, you didn't know what the team's travel schedule is. Jesse Menter talked about that at the start of his press conference. The Ravens will be flying down Thursday night. It's a red eye overnight flight. The land Friday morning. Then they will go to a practice on Friday. And then into a traditional Saturday play on Sunday. And then they'll fly back immediately after the game and get ready for the week four game here in Baltimore against the Tennessee Titans. Yeah. So that's the travel rundown. We actually talked with Ravens team president, Sashi Brown about that. That episode is going to come out Wednesday morning. And so we kind of dove into all of the logistics and everything that happens behind the scenes to get an NFL team to go on the road and play in that kind of an environment.

Just a fun conversation with Sashi. The international expansion has been a big talking point in the NFL. There's been more international games literally all over the world. This is certainly a growing trend. So we talked about all of that with Sashi. And again, that interview is coming out on Wednesday morning. That's right. We'll be on the on the flight to Brazil. We'll be getting you ready. And we'll be taping a podcast from Brazil. So make sure you stay tuned all week long for lots of updates through the week. It's a big game as the Ravens look to rebound against Dallas Cowboys. Thanks for listening as always. You can reach us at the lounge at Ravens. NFL dot net. Sorry. We don't get to every email.
