CANES POSTCAST: Record-Setting Night! Miami's Stars Shine, Young Canes Emerge in Historic 77-7 Rout

About this episode

Locked On Canes - Daily Podcast On Miami Hurricanes Football & Basketball is made possible by:

No. 7 Miami Hurricanes delivered complete domination in their 77–7 victory over Florida A&M, tying the program’s single-game scoring record while piling up 856 total yards and 42 first downs.

Miami scored touchdowns on its first 11 possessions, rushed for 430 yards, passed for 426 and produced touchdowns from nine different players. Six Hurricanes caught touchdown passes, 16 different players recorded a reception and Miami’s three quarterbacks combined to complete 27 of 29 passes for 426 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions.

Darian Mensah was nearly flawless again, completing 14 of 15 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns. Through two games, Mensah is 41-of-45 for 653 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions. Malachi Toney added four receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown, giving him 16 catches, 330 yards and four touchdowns this season.

Mark Fletcher Jr. rushed seven times for 105 yards and two touchdowns as Miami emphatically answered its questions about the running game. Freshman Javian Mallory broke out with 142 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, including a 52-yard scoring run.

The young Hurricanes took center stage in the second half. Luke Nickel completed all eight of his passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns. Vance Spafford made the catch of the night on a contested touchdown despite interference, while Somourian Wingo and Vandrevius Jacobs also caught long scoring passes. Dereon Coleman became Miami’s third quarterback of the night, and 16 Hurricanes caught at least one pass.

Defensively, Miami limited FAMU to 107 total yards and one third-down conversion in 14 attempts. The Hurricanes are 2–0 and have outscored Stanford and Florida A&M 122–13, although forcing turnovers remains an area to improve.

GRIES and Alex Donno break down the complete domination, Miami’s stars, the emerging young Canes, the resurgent running game, their Players of the Game and X-Factors, before looking ahead to Miami’s ACC road opener at Wake Forest.

Today's episode is brought to you by ADT. Imagine you're watching the game at a buddy's house when you get a call that someone tried to break into yours. In a second, everything can change. That's why there's ADT. ADT security systems help keep your home safe 24-7 with the most company operated monitoring centers in the industry. The ADT Plus app keeps you in control the whole time. The Miami Hurricanes didn't just beat Florida, and they unleashed the entire roster in a 77-7 demolition at Hard Rock Stadium. How bad was it? 856 yards tying a school record. Nine different hurricanes reached the end zone tonight. They tied the school record for points. They scored touchdowns on their first 11 possessions. 400 plus rushing yards, 400 plus passing yards. 42 first downs. What a night for the Miami Hurricanes. They are 2 and 0. They outscore Stanford and Famous 122 to 13. And tonight the star shined. The young Canes emerged. And the entire program showed us what complete domination looks like.

This is your Canes Postcast, and it starts right now. You are Lop Dawn Hurricanes Postcast. Part of Lop Dawn sports Miami on the Lop Dawn Podcast Network. Your team every day. 2 and 0, and I don't know how anything could have gone better these last two games to be honest with you. Jim Grease, Robert Callmigreece, welcome to your Canes Postcast. Lop Dawn Canes on the Lop Dawn Podcast Network. The number one sports podcast network. And of course, this is the top 10 channel, by the way. It's your team, your Canes, every day. 77, 7, the final, right? Miami ties its school scoring record. 856 total yards, 430 rushing, 426 passing. 42 first downs, 9 different people scoring touchdowns, 6 different receivers catching touchdowns, 16 different players catching a pass. The first 11 possessions ended in touchdowns.

Miami quarterbacks tonight. All three of them combined 27 of 29, 426 yards, 6 touchdowns, no interceptions. Miami only one penalty for five yards. Famous, just 107 yards and they went one for 14 on third down. The fourth quarter was shortened to 10 minutes. Coaches agreement. Those are your main stories at your Canes Postcast. Let's get it rolling. This is what you'll be talking about. HSPD, baby, IYK. YK. If you know what I'm saying, Jim Grease, Robert Callmigreece, big one, class of 96. Throw up those news, baby. Miami complete domination. They tie the school records and points in yardage. 42 first downs, 14.7 yards per pass. They averaged and 9.8 yards per rush. So much for the running game struggling. I know, look, it was Stanford last week. Fam you this week, I'm not going to get too crazy and carried away. But for a game like this where I was with all the guys today and all the different Miami hurricanes, media people and podcasters and everything.

We're predicting the final scores. And I'm going to throw mine into and I said 65 nothing. And as I looked at it, I'm going, man, that's 65 might not be enough. And we're at not for a very late scoop and score on a fumble. Would have been a shut out too. But Miami outgain, Fam you are you ready for this? 856 to 107. Miami's 2 and 0 with a beautiful performance at Stanford. And then one tonight that you expected. But in a game like this where you know you're going to blow them out and you're thinking, like 45, 55, zip, whatever, no, how about 77 points? How about the backups playing like stars tonight? Those are the things we wanted to see. Alex talked about it all week. We wanted to see the young guys go in there, not only get their chance so they don't hit the portal, some of them, but so they can ball out and we can see what we have for the future. And man, we have so much. Alex is going to break it down all week. We only have 19 minutes on this show. They're being super strict about it. Last week we went 45. We're going to be on all kinds of different new platforms. So we got to keep it moving. But the stars shining tonight for Miami.

And of course we have the turning point. We have the X factor and the player, the game. And then in the second segment we'll be joined by the one, the only Alex Donnell right here on the channel on the house, that Alex built. Darian Mentsow picked right up where he left off against Stanford. I wonder if he's going to play a full game anytime soon, right? 14 of 15, 252 yards, three touchdowns, no picks, 16.8 yards per attempt. And through two games. Now you ready? Two games. The Mentsow Highsman campaign is rolling, right? 41 of 45, 653 yards, eight touchdowns, no picks, 91.1 completion percentage. I can't wait to watch Arch mess everything up for Texas tomorrow and take himself out of the race against Ohio State. One of those guys is out saying our arch. We'll see. But and that's Saturday, not tomorrow. But Malachi 24 catches 96 yards in a touchdown. Plus he had a 22 yard punt return. 24 yards per catch. He's got 16 catches on the season 330 and four houses. Mark Fletcher, Jr. So much for the running game struggling. Seven carries 105 yards, two touchdowns.

His night ended very, very early 15 yards per carry. Look at all the miles that Mama Fletch shot out Mama Fletch driving all the way back from Palo Alto. Barely got back for the game too, man. She was in Phoenix a couple of days ago. But man, eighth career game with multiple touchdowns for Fletch lives. You know what I'm saying? 28 to nothing before the first minute of the second quarter had elapsed. And then the young guns came in. And by the way, Barcai had another touchdown too. But how about the young guns? How about Luke Nichol? Eight of eight, 144, three TDs, a perfect passer line for Luke Nichol tonight. A beautiful job after the pick last week that really wasn't his fault. It was a great defensive play. How about Javian Mallory? Ten carries, a buck 42, two houses. What a run on the second 150 plus for the freshmen scoring his first career touchdown. A long touchdown run tonight as well. And how about Vance Spafford? Beautiful catch in the end zone with a pass in her face with his arms being ripped down. Don't know how he caught the ball. It's got to be top 10 on sports center. Three catches, 53 yards. Unbelievable on the 21 yard touchdown catch on the throw from Nichol, who was fantastic.

Tonight, eight of eight with three TDs. As I said, how about Samaritan Wingo, two for 59 and a 47 yard touchdown? How about Ranjavius Jacobs, two catches 38 yards and a 33 yard touchdown? How about Coleman, 506 for 30 yards, four carries for 25 yards? White House looked good at the end of the game. We had like six running backs, seven running backs going in there. Five carries, 57 yards for him. Paris had two catches for 19 yards. And I mentioned the running game and it bears repeating and I'm going fast because we got to be fast tonight. But look, after the running game failed to take off against Stanford when they stacked the box, they said, we're not letting the running game beat us, right? You know what I mean? Four carries, 430 yards, 9.8 per carry and five rusting touchdowns, Mallory and Fletcher, 247 yards combined for touchdowns on only 17 carries tonight. And unbelievable. Miami return 98% of its Russian production. But looking more and more like that early 2000s backfield, is it not every single game? And I know it's FAMU. I'm going to hold my horses a little bit there. But how about the defensive standard? Still no turnover is forced and I'm just going to lead with that, but they dominated

again tonight. They did not give up the seven. It was on a scoop and score. So FAMU, 170 yards, 37 yards on the ground. They went one for 14 on third down. Seven of their first nine possessions were three in outs and I stopped counting after that because really, I mean, you know what I'm saying? But unbelievable. Two sacks, four tackles for a loss and unbelievable. It was just a tremendous performance by Corey Heatherman's defense. But again, no turnovers, no defensive scores. And I'm being a spoiled brat, but I can be because we're that good. Miami has allowed only 13 total points in two games. Only six of them allowed by the defense. And before we hit the break, I am going to hit one thing real quick and then we're going to bring in Alex Donnell. Time to reveal where the game was once or last. It's the turning point. The first four minutes of the game, Miami's first possession lasted only three plays, all handoffs to Mark Fletcher, Jr. The 46 yard touchdown caps it off after another defensive stop. Mensa finds Joshua Moore on the deep ball. 55 yard touchdown for the Teradacto on the very next play.

It was 14 zipped with 11, 11 remaining in the first quarter. The outcome was settled almost immediately. Still to come to play or the game. Still to come. The X factor. Still to come. A look ahead to wake for us. Still to come. Alex Donnell on the other side. This is your Cain's post cast on Locked On Cain's Live on YouTube right after the game. the first takeaway the season we have to wait a little longer for that it seems but the running game really came alive and it was so many different players getting it on the action you had Mark Fletcher doing three carries and a long touchdown in the opening drive you know JVM Allery was awesome in this game Luke Nichol I so and Darion Coleman as well by the way who was both of them were awesome so seeing the backup quarterbacks and anyone concerned about Nichol's accuracy because he missed a deep ball last week Nichol was throwing dimes tonight Greece and he's he has an opportunity potentially to be Miami's quarterback in the future so does Darion Coleman so to see both of them out there was great I know people are disappointed that it wasn't quite a shutout but when you get walk-ons into the game like you have to understand things can get a little sloppy so there was the fumble given up in the scoop and score other than that it was pretty much a perfect performance and Greece Andarian Mensa he now has twice as many touchdown passes as incompletions

on the season eight TDs for incomplete passes it's like watching AI out there he doesn't make mistakes yeah and they were two short ones on the deep balls it was early in the game when he's getting used to the ball but he's been unbelievable the running game of course very deep looking like that early 2000s is very early in the season Alex but real quick before we get to the X factor of the player in the game and all that just want to get your thoughts on overall on the on the offensive line tonight because we had running back after running back going into the game and just before they'd even have anybody near them they'd be five or six or seven or eight yards down field yeah I mean you can only play against who's on the schedule and I know it's like you can only say so much when fam used D line is really small but Greece don't we none of us should undervalue the importance of that O line getting another game together to continue to build that chemistry I thought the communication looked great I think we're starting to get closer to that five men one

mind thing and you know another game they don't give up any sacks in this time around you know and of course several different offensive linemen collaborated for 430 rushing yards which is exactly you'll probably not see that again this year but that's exactly what Mario Christobal wanted tonight nine players scored touchdowns from scrimmage tonight which is unbelievable just incredible eight hundred and fifty six yards of offense that's Alex Donald locked on canes wherever you're watching us are hearing us right now unless you've been you know hiding somewhere under a rock on God's orange and green earth you know where Alex is every day day in and day out bringing the whole fam together but Alex we have time for the player of the game I don't even have the X factor graphic yet but the player the game is the important one so let's roll that in now we each have our own and I'll have you go first right out of the out of the yellow this is the walk done player of the game I could choose any of like 40 different players but I'm going to go Luke Nichol Greece you know considering how important it is for him to build experience in this one and Luke you know he

technically has the best stat line of all the quarterbacks today because he went eight for eight hundred percent completions hundred forty four yards throws a really pretty deep ball three touchdown passes I'm going to go nickel for my MVP for this one to Wingo Jacobs and Spatts Afford and I'm going J.V. and Mallory Alex 10 carries a book 42 two touchdowns I mean just a couple of highlight real runs the first touchdown he slammed on the brakes change direction like Marcus Allen in the Super Bowl second one he houses it from 52 yards out so I don't think we could have I mean we could have picked a hundred guys to be players of the game it's not you know it's nice is that this is probably the only time this year or one of the only times this year where we'll both pick backups for players of the game the fact that they're able to do that you know usually it'd be a mencer or Tony or Fletcher or somebody like that so props to them and I want to get your final thoughts of about a minute and a half to wrap the show but if you could give me in 30 seconds or less what you expect coming up at Wake Forest because so far everything we thought we'd see from this team and then some is what we've seen yeah yeah I'll be watching Wake intently on

Saturday they take on Purdue and you know Wake a team we've talked about it they they did better than anyone realizes they did last year they won nine games which for Wake Forest seems off but that really happened it's going to be a bigger test grease than it was this week obviously for Miami but Wake can't stop Miami's weapons Miami just has way too much firepower you know I think the defense playing together for another week and having to replace some injured guys in the secondary I think today was really important so I think Miami's going to score a lot again to Wake Forest grease I think it's going to be another maybe not quite as comfortable as 77 to 7 today but I I don't I don't see Wake having an answer for all of Miami's weapons all right that's Alex Donnell hate to rush you out but I got 40 seconds man thank you so much for your time thanks for all your great work on the channel and we will see you and hear you right here on Lockdown Keynes go grease and go Keynes all right Alex Donnell the one the only Alex Donnell that's going to do it by the way
