2:03Miami's offense set all kinds of records on Thursday night. And I know it's FAMU, but Miami has played FAMU many times over the years and never put up the numbers that they put up yesterday. You had so many true freshmen step up, including JJ Dunnigan, who is so proud of his other class of 2020-2016 mates who are out there doing work. And Miami quite frankly dominated every single facet of the game. This one's a lot harder to nitpick than last week. But to help me do that anyway, not really. We're going to be talking about mostly good stuff today. Our good friend, the truth teller, and Bruce Warner has got to help me because I don't know how much longer my voice is going to last. Let's start with the big picture, Bruce. Did Miami accomplish as a team the objectives, physicality, communication, keeping the penalties down again? How'd you feel about all that stuff? Well, it feels great. It felt great to not talk to you at all except when Josh Moore caught the touchdown

3:05pass. We were both excited because he's one of our favorites. But the rest of the game, I just sat back and watched. I just watched in awe of what I saw. And you can't say anything negative except for the fact that they played who they played. And there's something like this going to negatively impact them when they get to Notre Dame because if they smoke everybody that they play, they're not having, there wouldn't have been in a tough battle. Notre Dame's in the same boat though. I keep seeing everybody talk about Miami schedule. Notre Dame schedule is not so great. So that we should both be undefeated going into that game. And that will be the true measure whether we're a national title contender or just a playoff team and that's the end of it. I don't know. But last night, nothing went wrong. I saw a few examples. I'm real walk on fumbling. Yeah, two little walk on fumbling. But he did make the catch and he started up the field.

4:06Then you got, you know, Pringle had a slight ankle twist. So he was limping. He didn't go back in the game. But there was so many positives on both sides of the ball. And again, we played a week from today at Wake and other screw ball during the week game, but it's the weekend. I don't know. I haven't seen Wake play yet. Did they play today Wake Forest? They play Saturday against Purdue. Right. And you could tell that Mario got into their, these guys skulls all week long to make sure that this is not an overlook game that he said at the end of the Stanford game, we got a lot to work on. And he said it again last night. There's a lot to work on. He's not a happy camper. That's just how he is. And I think Sabin was the same way. You couldn't tell Sabin won by 50 or lost by 50 because he had that same stark look on his face.

5:06Mario is happy because the way they accomplished this, everybody competed, everybody played hard. The offensive line, which we were going after them during the week, they looked significantly better with the same five starters, no less. Yes. And that was good. The defense just ran to the ball. They swarmed to the ball. And they got faked a few times. The quarterback was running. But overall, there was nothing to be concerned about. So I'm going to try to watch Wake today or tomorrow if they play tomorrow. It does feel like it should be Saturday right now, doesn't it? Yeah, today feels like Saturday, but it's only Friday. But look, there's nothing to complain about. And yes, you mentioned all those freshmen that contributed and contributed big time. And the guys that we saw, I mean, look, I'll pick JV on Mallory. Wow, is he good? Mark called me up and said he reminds him of some of the big time studs we've had over

6:09the years like Najee. That important was a big dude. Steven was a big dude, but he didn't have that kind of speed, McGuire. So the Mallory kid looks legit that move by Pringle at the goal. I still can't remember. He was breaking ankles on that move. Yeah, I didn't even know he saw that guy when I saw a lot of guys, he's going to get smashed. And obviously he jump cuts to the left and he walks into the end zone. What a move. What a move. And the receivers, the catch that Malachai made. How about the catch by Spafford, too? Malachai. That's next. Yeah. He got it. The ball get in there. I didn't even see any room, but he caught it. I don't know if anybody knows this, but I think, and I'll try to check, I think he's the fastest player on the team. I believe so by like, he ran a sub 430, 430, and some sort of a combine thing. He's really, he's legit. And then you got that re-imensive, which is like he's 41 for 45, 853 yards, eight touchdowns,

7:17no picks. As you say, he's got more touchdowns than he has incomplete passes, which is why the play so many. And I got a really good stat on Mensa that I saw this morning. So Darian Mensa threw two games into a season. He is the first player in NCAA history to start a season with back-to-back games of 90 or more percent completions. Check. 250 or more passing yards and three or more touchdowns in each of his first two games in the season, which obviously the trickiest part of that being 90 plus percent, because who goes 90 percent completions these days? And it's not like he's dinking and dunking like Darian Mensa is going down field and going 90 plus percent. If, if 41 for 45, if he had an open tryout for the NFL scouts, and he was throwing balls to the receivers that were just helping him work out for the scouts, I don't think he would go 41 for 45. Close, but I don't know if he would do that.

8:20But he stands in the pocket. He's tough. He ran a few times, got out of trouble. You can't say enough about Shannon Dawson. He's doing an incredible job. Again, the talent at Stanford was better than the talent yesterday. It gets ramped up next week against Wake, and then we have Central Michigan coming here. That won't be any tough game at all. And then we've got to go to Clemson. And that's probably going to be something to look at to make decisions where we really are. Because they're a desperate team. They're at home. They're going to be fired up. Davo could win back a lot of the negativity if he beats Miami. So I'm not looking past this next week against Wake, but you're looking at your schedule. I don't know who's going to even come close. And then we have Florida State coming in two weeks later after the Clemson game. Now I'll say this.

9:20I think we've all got to be well. I just want to watch that game the other night. And I didn't think Florida State played as bad as all these fans are screaming about. They almost won. Yes, yes, SMU almost gave it away. But still, they were right there and they could have won the damn game. So you know, they want to fire him. I don't think they're going to fire him now. And a lot of people have, I know this is the Miami show. A lot of people have comments who's going to take the job. It's not just him. That administration stinks. Yeah, I get it. So I don't really care. But I like this guy being in the coach because they're not being this one. Well, I want to get to speaking to coaches. A coach we both really like Mario Cristobal, some of his comments after the game, including Cristobal shed light on yet another cornerback injury. But you know, that's the bad news. The good news is you're able to move a guy like Bryce Fitzgerald to corner, Exise Versa

10:24will enough to do that. And you can move a true freshman like JJ Dunnigan into the starting lineup at safety. And he plays like a senior out there. You want to keep it locked right here. We're going to talk about individual players who stood out. And a lot of them were the young guys. You want to keep it locked. You're only getting started on this brand new episode of Locked on Cain. Well, group wise, the wide receivers were incredible. The running backs were incredible. They looked great. The offensive line looked pretty damn good. It was significantly better than they were last week. And they were getting making blocks downfield. Whereas last week, they seemed like they were stuck at the line of scrimmage. And everybody had a run past the line of scrimmage. And it wasn't easy with six or seven in the box. I think that if they had six or seven in the box yesterday, or if the team that played yesterday played at Stanford, they would have gotten more running back yardage because

13:27they were that more violent, which is what Mario wants. They were more physical. They were more into it. They were ready for certain things. You saw a Fletcher turn the corner and a great block by Lofton, knocking somebody on their rear end and he took it to the house. Yeah. I saw SJ throw some blocks down in the field instead of like, he looked lost last week. The defensive line looked pretty good. Yeah, did they have one sack? Two. Two. Okay. And then the backers played violently. I'll tell you who I think is violence, that Marceline kid. Oh my God. I love his game. We were texting about him. We were texting about Marceline. Yeah, because he made a tackle in the back. He spun that guy around and slammed him to the ground. And a lot of his tackles are boom. He's just hitting people. Got to like that kid. He's a true freshman too, right? He's a second year softball. No, he was. Okay.

14:27I thought he wasn't there last year. We saw EWOL play a little bit. He was playing corner. He saw, and now I saw Portis a lot. And then I didn't see him anymore. Did he get hurt? Oh, I don't know about that. I was one of those ideas. I was one of those ideas. I was not in there in most of the second half. It might have just been the rotations, I think. I'm hoping. I'm hoping. You got to like, you got to like, don't again, the kid is amazing. Just a man. He had a sack in the back field. Just like we had last year when our DBs were making sacks in the back field. Like he is so like I was just, and I was at the stadium. So I wasn't relying on what the cameras choose to show you. So when Dunne get it was in the game, a lot of times I was just watching him. You know, he started, got his first collegiate start. And Bruce, he, he moves so fluently that at times, and he was in on every, he didn't play that much. That's why he only had five tackles, but he led the team with five tackles. There was so much rotation. And there were times when it looked like there were two 25s on the field. Like he, his range is just incredible.

15:30And the football IQ that it requires to play the play the way that he does. I mean, Miami's got a superstar on their hands and JJ Dunnegan because, you know, some guys they come in as freshmen, they need at least a few games of a learning curve. This guy hits the ground running. Yeah, he's very, very good, very aggressive, very intelligent. I thought Luke Nicholuk really good. He was eight for eight. So it's hard to complain. He had, he had a couple of runs where he took off. We've seen the complete control of the offense. And it's another step for this kid, but I've been saying a whole long, this is one of the most important aspects of this team, getting this kid ready in case or definitely getting him ready for next year. And yeah, this was not a great team. Let's see if he does it against Wake. I think he's going to play it every game this year, unless it's a nail bite or it just can't put him in the game. So that was another way off our, the offense of ours. Yeah. And even Daryon Coleman played really well too. Yeah, I mean, he's got a whip for an arm and he's tights little though, but he's good.

16:35And then what's I have on here? I thought the defense was very physical. Yeah. But at the end of the game, Mario says there's a lot to clean up. Now, I don't know exactly what he's talking about, but he's going to spoil our alert. He's going to say that after every game. I know that. He's going to say it. And he should. So yes, Spafford's focus on that catch was awesome. That was great. I mean, I didn't see how the ball got through, but it did. Oh, I didn't either. All I know that there were two guys all over him, which also means it was a really pinpoint throw by Nickel. And Spafford was being held. Like he had no business catching that ball. Right. They called it on that. They called it. All right. So I've got here that Mallory is very special. He's not just good. He's very special. You could just see it. The jump cuts and his ability to turn the corner. He turned the corner on the left side and went down the field. They got him, but still he's like I mentioned, I mentioned, he will play. We saw widely play.

17:35We saw Redding make some good plays. Number 37. He's a hitter. Pringle looked really good, except when he heard his ankle. So my question to you is, will the level of competition somewhere down the line hurt this team? Obviously the answer to that is maybe to possibly yes. Like I can't say no, but I know that the emphasis from Mario Cristobal is going to be put them in such a pressure cooker every day in practice. Right. I mean, the best team that Miami faced this week were each other at GreenTree, not Famu. So if you practice the right way, I think that's the best thing. Like the, you know, to prepare you for Notre Dame's defense, Miami's defense will be the best preparation for that. Not Wake Forest, not Clemson, not Florida State. So I think really, you know, unfortunately you can only play the schedule in front of you and the ACC kind of stinks. So you know, your options for big games are very limited. So yeah, I just think really you have to take care of that in practice.

18:38It's about the way you practice. Right. So, and that's what he does. And I'm sure they already looked at film. They're looking at more film today and they'll rest and then tomorrow they're going to write back to work, but they have an extra day to get ready. So he has to figure out what day is the normal day if you're going Saturday, Saturday, and adjust to that. You know, you don't want to peak Thursday if the game is Friday. But I expect every game to be like the national championship game. And it's not exactly true, but I expect his persona, his personality and the way he does things to make it appear like that because they had two slip ups last year. You know, before they were nine and oh, and they laid in a gig and Syracuse at the last game of the season. Last year, they lost at home, the Louisville, and they didn't play well at all. No. They were always behind the net game. I don't see them being behind anybody this year.

19:39And then they went to SMU and laid an egg completely. I don't see. No, we don't play either of those teams this year. No, so you figure one of the two unless Clemson gets hot because that was a non-conference loss last week. Unless Clemson gets hot, we should play one of those two or three teams for the ACC title. Whether we beat Notre Dame or not, we're going to be in the playoffs, obviously. I just want to beat them and I kind of want to beat them convincingly. Yes. So they don't get a buy maybe and they don't want to play us. I don't think anybody wants to play it. And if you look at this offense, I said average 40 points a game. So what are they averaging now? What's the total? 77 and 45 is what? It's got to be in the high fifties probably. 123 divided by two. They're average in 62 points a game. That's why we're not getting that. That's why we're not getting that. They should average 40 easily, which is what I said. Easily. That's right. No. And by the way, I mentioned this, unfortunately, another cornerback injury has been confirmed.

20:44And a couple days ago, one of our every day listeners asked me, does anything after the Stanford game, like the way they played, anything concerned you? And I said, no, the only thing that would concern me is the possibility of injuries. And again, thankfully, our toughest game against Notre Dame is still almost two months away. But Mario, Christopher confirms yesterday that, yeah, Xavier Lucas is also going to miss some time. So it's Lucas, OJ Frederick and Jibori Antoine. So Christopher said about Lucas, it's being tested. Xavier got hurt last game. He's going to miss approximately a month. And hopefully that will be it. OJ Frederick a little bit more extensive than that. We figured that and we lost Jibori in the preseason. This is certainly not what you want, Coach said. So we are here now and the guys that showed versatility through fall camp and show what we worked on. It showed up tonight and we expect them to be really good players for us. So again, I would take Miami's backup corners over the starters in most teams in the power

21:45four, but still Bruce, let's just hope that the injuries we have right now, that that's it for a while, and we don't have any more. I hear you. I think Lucas will be back. I think Antoine will be back for Clemson from what I'm hearing. And I can't count on OJ. Just can't. We've had guys that were hurt for a long time and they really never came back during that season. I'm not counting on the fact that he's going to be back. And if he's back just before Notre Dame, that scares me. Yeah. Because that's not the kind of game we've come back to play. Yeah. We haven't played in two months. So I'm just thinking, let these kids, like I said, he will play. These guys play. They're all playing. And these are the perfect games to play. Let them get some time to play. Well, when we come back, I have checked the record books. There were some program records and even an ACC record that was broken by Miami last night. So Miami, Miami in that 77 to 7 destruction of FAMU racked up a school record, 856 yards of total offense. So over 30 on the crown, 426 through the air, which is awesome balanced by the way.

25:50Miami set an ACC record for first downs in a single game with 42. No one else in the ACC has done that. And Miami tied as you probably know they said it a thousand times on the broadcast. Miami tied their school record with 77 points scored at the game. I really thought we were going to get to 80, Bruce, but you know, you start getting the guys who aren't on scholarship into the game and they sped up the fourth quarter as well. They went to 10 minutes. They couldn't kick the field goal to make it 80. Mario did not want to rub it in. He would have gotten negative press. So just 77 is bad enough. He still may get negative press, but I don't think he cares. He accomplished what he wanted to accomplish for yesterday. So you had a short week and oh, actually, was it was it a short week? It was. Yeah, it was Friday Friday Thursday. It was a half week. It was Sunday Thursday. But he got his points across in practice.

26:50And that's what we all wanted to see. And now we got to go on the road again for the second time out of the first three games. And Wake is not a bad team. They're not an explosive offense. They're not super talented with four and five stars. They're well coached. They're very disciplined. They can cause a little bit of a problem at the beginning because they may change some things, but we're still going to beat these guys. They're not that good. But again, you want to see the progress. So all we're going to play with the same physicality, the same violence, the same reluctant mentality. No one was making mistakes. Not dropping balls. False starts, things like that. They did really had a very clean game for, and I think Mario was complaining about they didn't have that many offensive plays. I guess they. They didn't need them. I they didn't need. I mean, they're opening drives were like 59 seconds, eight seconds, 55 seconds.

27:50Yeah. All good, but it's time to close the door on Florida A&M and look ahead. So we from today, we're playing, it's a night game again. The Friday game is a night. Yeah, it's a 630 star. You're right. At one start time. Yeah, it's an odd start time. But we'll be ready for that. Then, then we come home. We have an extra day to get ready for Central Michigan. And that's going to be the 1991 35 year reunion of that national championship team, which I said on the show Tuesday, all my buddies are going to be there. I know marks coming here. You know, I forgot which zone, the former hurricanes, party is the pregame activities, but I'll find out for Mark and I could put it on the air next Friday. So people want to go down and see a lot of these guys. I mean, Mark, and whoever else, all these guys that are there that are my friends, some of you guys can come in.

28:50You know, Jeann Gino's going to be there. You know, Steven will be there. Leon will be there. Kelvin will be there, of course. I don't know if Claude's going to be there. He's a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland. But he might. So I'm pretty sure. I don't know if Jesse's going to be there because I have the Giants play the next day, but he might. Yeah, you know, he might. Well, let's see if we can get Smith to be there. Oh, yeah, for sure. And yeah, so, so this was, I mean, it's great to have good stuff to talk about 77 to seven, just a destruction. Miami is really good at football. We're going to have a lot to talk about throughout this next week on Locked on Cain's and Bruce, before we run, you know, today is September 11th. We are now exactly 25 years from that defining day in American history. I think we all remember where we were. I was in junior and high school. We happened to be in an assembly.

29:51And then we, you know, one of our administrators came in and explaining what happened. It just, you know, I felt like my life changed that day. And something I hadn't realized even I hadn't remembered until yesterday because on our WQAM pregame show, we had like an audio tribute to that. And that was obviously the same season where Miami greatest team in college football history. Also in 2001. And like after, you know, the towers came down, college football paused for 19 days, right? The 19th where just America was focused on what was going on in the world. And it's like looking back on that man, it's like, I didn't even remember that the season was paused for almost three weeks. And I don't think I thought about it because our minds were on so many things at that time. But I was so happy when football came back, Bruce, because it was like, you started to feel like your life was getting back to normal. Yeah, I remember also the Yankees were in the World Series. And I remember both throughout the first pitch and that that was, that was the very

30:52bad. I was on my way to work in a law office that I worked in for maybe a year and a half. I always worked by myself because of my son's illness. So I'm driving and I hear what's going on. I was going to the Howard Sternies describing what's going on. I got to the office. I said, I got to watch. I went to Brandsmart, bought a TV, bought it back in the conference room. We all stood around and watched it because it was riveting. You couldn't take your eyes off of it. No. Wow. Yeah, just the horrible, horrible tragedy. I had a friend that died in there. Yeah. Yeah. I just like, the kid that was friends with my cousin back in New Jersey, how he cast them down. He's glory is on, but he's gone. So it's awful. It's awful. Yeah. So we wanted to say something on this day and God bless everyone who has served and God bless all the first responders, right? I mean, risking your lives, you know, to try to save people incredible.
