2:05Now, Miami's opponent in this one and I know the game is not expected to be competitive and the result will not probably not be in doubt, but I feel for the Famous Rattlers because they have had to deal with extra adversity throughout the week. We'll talk about it, but let's start with Miami's keys against Famous. The first of these is so obvious. I shouldn't have to say it, but I'm going to say it anyway because Miami does come into this game already. Little banged up, especially in the defensive secondary. OJ Frederick is going to be out for an extended period of time. Mario Christibal confirmed. He's one of Miami's top cornerbacks. Another important cornerback, Jebore Antoine is going to miss some time. Dylan Day at safety. I think he's going to miss this game, but he should be coming back soon from illness. And when I pulled our every day, or our listeners, the number one key that kept coming up was.

3:08Just get out of this game healthy. Please clean game. No additional injuries. And so, you know, it's usually something that I don't say out loud also because I'm a little superstitious. But I'm going to say it out loud this time around because you know Miami, especially in a game that you don't expect to be in doubt. And you're going to win it easily. We think I mean don't don't tell Mario Christibal that because he treats every opponent like it's 2019 LSU as he should. But I'm not Mario Christibal. I know this game should be one easily by Miami, but please get out of there healthy. That's the number one key. And I know our listeners and our every dayers agree with that. The next key. Establish ground dominance. I really want to see Miami's running game get going in this one regardless of who the opponent is. I want to see Miami's ground attack really get going because I maintain. That's one of the best ways to build chemistry with a young offensive line. And they've got some road graders on that offensive line.

4:10Give them the opportunity to pancake to get down field to open up holes for Miami's bevy of running backs. Miami rushed for 121 yards against Stanford, which is a pedestrian stat, but there's context there. You know Stanford was loading the box. They were daring Miami to throw and Miami did throw to the tune of over 400 passing yards and Malachi Tony had 234 receiving a three touchdowns. So challenge was accepted. But throughout the year, you know, we want to see Miami's running game match the sort of success that the passing game had. And you know coach crystal ball, he acknowledged the loaded boxes and everything, but he still said the offensive line can do better and opening up those muddy yards. So I want to see those holes opened up and I want to continue to see whatever the combinations are of offensive lineman tonight because I know they're going to rotate. They're going to get some backups in there. I want to see these guys opening up holes and I really want to see the running game take off in this one.

5:13That's a big priority for me. Huge. Third, penalty free. Right. I'd love to see Miami commit. Let's say three total penalties are less than this one. They were penalized just five times for 50 yards against Stanford. And I think the majority of those were when the backups were on the field, you know, the backups may just be a little sloppier with that stuff than the starters are. So you're going to see a lot of backups on the field tonight. But the thing that I loved about the hurricanes against Stanford was no pre snap penalties whatsoever. There are no false starts, which is that's massive, especially for the first game of the year with a young offensive line. Right. And it wasn't that loud of a road environment. We know that in this games going to be a home game. But if Miami can get through another game, a second game in a row without any pre snap penalties, you show us that week one wasn't a fluke. If you could do it week two and maybe develop a streak, right. And then you can go to the defensive side of the ball.

6:15I'm going to defer to defensive coordinator Corey Heatherman on this one, because Miami's DC told you exactly what he wants to see from his unit in this game. And that's more speed, more violence and more swarming. I think that was something that maybe, you know, you remember last year where they, Miami's defense set a very high bar last season. And then they were swarming to every tackle anytime. Miami would stop a running back for, you know, a zero yard gain or a two yard loss. You had six seven guys in a pile tackling that runner. Maybe didn't see enough of that against Stanford. So we want to see more swarming and keeping, you know, fan use rushing attack to a minimum. Miami gave up just 78 rushing yards against Stanford, which is really good. Like they forced Stanford to be one dimensional. And then they were going to be the first Davis Warren who had a good game, but never got into the end zone. That was the guy they forced to beat them because they made Stanford one dimensional.

7:17You're going to want to do that and we'll talk more about that with fam you with the adversity they're going through. But make fan you one dimensional. I want to see Miami giving up, let's say under 50 rushing yards tonight. I would look at that as a very realistic goal anywhere between zero to 50 yards, a maximum on the ground. And even higher standard on that statistic that I do. And okay. Get some takeaways in this one. That was something I mentioned right off the top because you know, Miami got close a couple of times to an interception or two against Stanford just couldn't quite, you know, get the the timing right to get on those footballs. I really want to see the first turnover of the season and it would be great to get that at home, you know, whether it's Bryce Fitzgerald getting an interception or maybe our Mondo blunt forcing a fumble and just in Scott picking it up a scoop and score would be awesome. But that was something Miami didn't do last week in Zechariah Poiser.

8:17We had a chance to talk with star safety at Miami about this on I think it was on Tuesday and Poiser said quote. I felt like I had several opportunities to take the ball away in that first game and coach will Harris coach Terry Jefferson those are the DB coaches. They are always emphasizing takeaways to me. The ball is where the money is Poiser said the most important thing is putting myself in position. It was the first game and I think I'll create many takeaways as the season progresses. I think I'll continue improving so that's something we want to see more of and the tone of every Miami player who has spoken to the media this week has been very similar. We can get better we weren't satisfied with our performance, you know, we talked earlier this week. I thought it was a really cool quote from Marquis Lightfoot who you know objectively played very well against Stanford had said 5 out of 10 is how he graded himself he was not satisfied and that's how I want every player to be. And I don't want Zech or I a Poiser even if Poiser gets three interceptions tonight. I don't want him to be satisfied with that.

9:23I wanted to keep improving that so those are my primary keys, you know, I put it out there to our every day or club. We got one from Richie though who said allow our quarterback. I don't know if he means just one quarterback to throw. Yeah, Mensa allow him to throw seven touchdowns before he aching him from the game. That dude 239 said execution balance business mindset have fun and finished the game 1 to 0. I also got a comment from somebody which I thought at first was a really good point.

10:23Not to say it wasn't a good point, but then I remembered they changed the rules on something which is a good thing. So one of the comments said, hey, please no targeting penalties with the thinking that that would be a suspension that would carry over to the next game. The NA actually thankfully changed that rule right because obviously you would say we don't want any targeting against fam you because that would be a really petty game to lose a guy, you know, for the first half against wake forest. But the NCAA is no longer going to suspend first time offenders for the first half of the following game. So you still don't want any targeting penalties. I don't want any, you know, fam you players getting hurt at the hands of Miami players or anything like that. But they no longer the NCAA no longer suspend you for the next game if it's a first time offense. So thankfully that rule was tweaked because I think it needed to be. But those are my keys to the game and when we come back folks. Fam you you talk about a week that really no college football team, especially an FCS team should have to have a turnaround like this and they have extra injury adversity.

11:31You want to keep it locked right here. It's game day. I'm also going to talk about which players I want to see more from tonight. You want to keep it locked on locked on Kings. You know you're keeping it locked to Cal. She my friends the season has kicked off and everyone's making predictions who wins the division who makes the playoffs who's lifting the trophy at seasons end. Well on Cal. 14:02Thank you for making locked on canes your first listen. All right, so you know, fam you, you know, again, I'm not going to pretend that the result of this game should ever be in any doubt. It's just a completely different level of football Miami's a top 17 in the country, fam you as an FCS team. But I just man, I really feel and you know, I don't think fam you or Miami are the ones who chose to put this game on a Thursday night. I think that has more to do with the TV networks doing the scheduling. But fam you had to do a Sunday to Thursday turn around for two road games. I guess first one a neutral site game. And then a road game against the number 17 in the country. Now both of those games being played in Miami. So fam you their school is in Tallahassee. They stayed in South Florida for the full week, which probably racked up their travel expenses, but that was the most convenient way to make this happen.

15:05You think about like in the NFL, they make teams occasionally do the Sunday to Thursday night football turn around. But NFL teams hate that they hate it. College teams are usually not made to do that because it's just it's really not safe. And fam you Sunday game was like a late night game. I think it was delayed for a while and they have to play Thursday night. So that's just brutal. Like it's brutal for them that they didn't have extra time to prepare for the number 17 in the country. They had less time. But then the other part of it is, uh, fam you starting quarter back was injured in their opening game and it was revealed late in the week or midweek that he's going to be out for the season. Unfortunately, that's Isaiah Knowles, their starting quarterback broke his thumb in the third quarter of the South Carolina state game. They lost 30 to 13. He's out for the year. So they're back up quarterback, who's, you know, he's older. He's a grad student, Dustin Fletcher, not a whole lot of experience. Though he's going to take over. He took over in the third quarter of that loss. He went six for 10 for 68 yard zero touchdown zero interceptions.

16:15So fam use also down to their backup quarter back. So I just want to say like gutsy for those guys. I full respect to fam you. And they, they do have their marching 100 band with them, which is a, I mean, that halftime show at Hard Rock. That is going to be a party. If you haven't seen the marching 100 in person and I'm speaking to the people who are going to be at the game tonight or maybe you haven't decided, get some tickets to the game. The halftime show is going to be lit. The marching 100 does such an incredible job. They don't always come down here because the whole travel expenses thing can be tricky and usually be the team hosting the game has to pay for that. But they are going to be here. I'm told for this one, which is going to be a lot of fun. And I'm really pumped for that halftime show. But go back to the Miami Hurricanes. You know, this is a game that is likely going to give Miami an opportunity to give extended playing time to some younger players, players who are maybe currently second or third on the depth chart who have an opportunity to climb.

17:21And these are the names that I'm really pumped to see more of tonight in the defensive backfield. JJ Dunnigan. And I start with DB, by the way, because that's the most banged up position group right now. JJ Dunnigan. We saw the preview of him against Stanford, the true freshman out of Manhattan, Kansas. How they're going to line him up at multiple spots because he's so versatile and he's so athletic. He might play some corner. He's going to play some free safety. He's going to blitz. Like there's so many things you can do with JJ Dunnigan because he's a hell of a football player. And I don't want to get that way to see what he does tonight. And there's a couple of young corners that I think are going to get opportunities to play like Camden Portis and Jalen Waters who can develop each of them into important depth pieces this year. If Miami does have continued injury woes at that position, hopefully they don't. But still you want to develop your young talent and get these guys ready.

18:23And for last year, you know, Jibori Antoine who's he's banged up right now, but last year is a true freshman Antoine had to come in and play an important role, especially when Xavier Lucas was suspended for targeting for the first half against Indiana. So he got called up in the nati he I mean, there's no bigger, no bigger moment than that. So you have to be ready for all that on the offensive line. Right. A couple of the names we've been talking about for days, weeks, months, of course, Jackson, can't well, who I think is going to be a starter, you know, before the season is over, whether that's tonight or not, I don't know. But we want to see more from can't well who played quite a bit of reps against Stanford, continuing to develop, continuing to work on his past protection, Ben, Kongden, same thing, could very well be a starter or close to it by the time the season is over. And I've had another one who I'm a big fan of who I think get a lot of PT, another freshman offensive lineman Reese Woodrow, you know, Reese who I think is now Miami's backup center, didn't really play center in high school learning that position for the first time.

19:31And rep he's going to take is super important Reese is impressing his coaches out there. And we definitely want to see him kind of continue to polish up his snapping because I know, like even Ryan Rodriguez, the starting center had issues with some high and wild snaps last week. So your starting center all your backup centers, we want to smooth out the snapping and I'm looking forward to watching reach Woodrow tonight. JV and Mallory are running back. I mean, I don't have to tell you why if you saw the second half of the Stanford game, how explosive Mallory is more PT for him, please. Same thing with Samorian, Wingo, a wide receiver, he was doing some work late in that game and Wingo, Wingo is one of these freshmen who doesn't look like it or play like it, like he's beyond his years. In the quarterback spots, right, we know Darian Mensa is going to start this game, think how long Mensa plays is really going to depend on like how big of a lead Miami jumps out to early. I think we're going to see a lot of Luke Nichol. I'd like to see probably two quarters from him, at least, but it's hard to say that though, because you want to you want to give nickel enough reps for him to really polish his game.

20:43But also not too many reps where you'd risk him getting injured. So if we do see three to even four quarterbacks, Darian, Coleman, Judd Anderson, it'll be interesting to see which, if they get to quarterback three, which one it is, because I, you know, we don't know Mario's not putting out depth charts, so we don't know who's quarter back three or quarter back four. And obviously Coleman being a true freshman with crazy arm talent, we want to get a look at him. Linebacker, Kellyn Wiley, Jr. looked fan-freaking, tastic, late in the Stanford game when he got in, give me more Kellyn Wiley. I think he's going to be a stud here. And those are most of the names that I'm looking at. A shari Charles at defense event. I'd like to see him get in, get some PT. And the other thing to note for tonight, my am is going to be wearing their most traditional home uniforms, which again Mario and I agree with Mario on this. He's a traditionalist.

21:45You know, my am is going to mix up the uniform combos probably a little bit this year, but first home game home opener, Miami's going with orange jerseys white pants, the most traditional look, and I'm about that. All right, so, you know, I don't know if they've made an official call to the fans for what color to wear. I'm breaking the rule. I'm wearing green right now, but I'll be wearing orange at the game tonight. So where orange match the team would be my suggestion. And let's all have a good, a good time tonight. We'll talk about what Mario Christobal learned about his starting quarterback, which really opened my eyes. 25:12And crystal ball on Pat McAfee. He was asked what he learned from Darian men says week one performance now at the firm. I'm going to cut out part of the answer because crystal ball did the thing he does so well where he made it really about the entire team right what he learned about his entire group. He really liked to single out individual players, which is I think a good strategy as a head coach, but he did not immediately, but he did get into the men's a thing and he said about Darian, who threw for 401 yards 27 for 30 90% completions five touchdowns, no interceptions. Crystal ball said quote, it's what we saw in practice every single day elite talent elite human being awesome leadership skills precision pocket presence accurate balls right can extend plays and just improvise and his juice is awesome. I love that I love being around this guy man, he brings so much energy to the table, he impacts those guys around him. So all in all, just a very positive step and the best part, the guy can hear hungry as leap to get better. So we love that.

26:22And yeah, those were my first impressions of men's a you know watching him in spring, getting a chance to really meet him for the first time in July at ACC media days. It's personality is electric. He's got a lot of gravitas to him, players love being around him and he's all about the work ethic. Even even when he's not playing football, he's playing football if that makes sense, like when he's not doing official practices, he's doing off schedule throwing sessions and it really is, it really is a lifestyle for him. And Darian Mensa did rack up a trio of honors after week one. Now notably an honor that Mensa didn't get because the ACC is going to do what they do. He was not named ACC quarterback of the week. That went to put up tremendous stats Mason Heinschel of Pittsburgh. Now Pittsburgh played against they played against Miami, but the Miami Ohio and you know Heinschel through for seven touchdowns and over 400 yards. So he put up amazing stats.

27:28You know, I don't I don't think Heinschel like got the attention of America the way that Darian Mensa did, but the ACC they went with Mason Heinschel for quarterback of the week Malakitoni did get receiver of the week because they couldn't completely snub Miami as much as they may have wanted to do so. But Mensa did take other honors. He was named Senior Bowl offensive player of the week. And by the way, this info comes courtesy of Miami's athletic department. They sent me a nice press release about this senior bowl offensive player of the week. He was selected to the Dave Yolbright award great eight. So I guess he's eight among the eight finalists for that. And he was named a Manning Award star of the week over arch or did arch maybe arch was also named a star of the week, but it would be hilarious. And I think that's a great thing to do with Mensa got the meaning star and arch didn't I don't know maybe arch got what as well, but that's a cool trio of of recognitions from Mensa and I know Darian if he was here right now would say whatever man, I just want to just want to keep going to want to know every single week. So I appreciate that. And heart for those for those who are out there tonight.

28:38Definitely if you're walking around the stadium, especially if you're anywhere near the south side do look for me and the WQAM radio crew because I'm doing pregame this year on a 104 3 WQM we're going to have a setup is the flagship station for Miami. Now it's going to be the Kachak brothers both of them. Matthew Kachak who also represented Miami college game day last year. He loves the canes and I love that about Matthew the way he embraces this community and his brother.

29:42And so Matthew and Brady Kachak will be in tandem sounding the hurricane alarm before the game tonight. I think it's a really cool way to bring a couple of important South Florida sports teams together and kudos to the Kachaks because it'd be very easy for them you know and their and their hockey thing to kind of ignore college football but the way that they embrace it is so freaking cool. So let's get a heart rock stadium tonight. Let's wish for no injuries. Let's wish for clean execution. Let's wish for a trillion rushing yards tonight and a half a billion takeaways and a million sacks this evening and we'll talk to you all next time on another episode of Lockdown Cains.
