playing What's going on everyone? Welcome to Farsine Vesuigan here with you on Wednesday. The Chief Zone is here. This is a big one. Chiefs Raiders. Chiefs Raiders has always been very exciting. But this is different. 3-0 vs 3-0, these two teams have never been 3-0 in the same season and it just so happens
that the very first time they're both 3-0 in the same year, they're playing each other in week 4. The football gods aligned it just like that's how the schedule all worked out. For these two teams to play each other undefeated in week 4 and listen, nobody expected to. Certainly nobody thought the Raiders would be 3-0. Nobody. And the Chiefs, some thought they could be 3-0 up to this point. I think there were a lot of people that were also downing the Chiefs, coming off as 6-11 season, coming off Patrick Mahomes, knee surgery, the ACL and the LCL surgery and people thought that there was no way that this Chiefs team would be able to recover. Wrong go, both teams are here and this is going to be quite the showdown here. And there, look I'll say this. I know what a lot of people are saying about the Raiders.
The, I brought this up earlier in the week. Their combined record of opponents they beat are 1-8. Now I think the Saints are one of those teams who's, as a team they're better than their record shows. All 3 of their games have come down to the wire. Now the Dolphins, the Chargers, who would have thought beating the Chargers would not be anything impressive. I mean, hell over the years, the Chiefs have beat the Raiders so many times, it's been considered unimpressive. The Chiefs, I mean listen, we in Canterty, we love to brag about the fact that the Chiefs are undefeated, well, Mahomes specifically is undefeated inside a Legion Stadium, including a win in Super Bowl 58 where the Chiefs want to play a Super Bowl in the Raiders house before the Raiders could even play a playoff game there. I mean, how poetic is that? The same year when the Raiders beat the Chiefs on Christmas and they bragged about that, well, I think a Super Bowl win outweighs a holiday win, in my book at least.
And unless I remember a time when Raiders fans used to brag about who had more Super Bowl trophies, you certainly are not getting that from Raider Nation. Now it's, oh, well it took you guys 50 years, well, the Raiders are coming up on 42, 43 years since their last Super Bowl win. So it's been a while for them. This is one of the hottest starts the Raiders have had in quite some time. Now yes, they've made the playoffs a couple of times. 2016 and 2021 both ended badly. The one against the Bengals in 2021, that was not bad. I mean, they had a chance in that one. But overall, they just haven't had much to look forward to. And now with the Raiders, they've got a wild six to eight weeks coming up, an incredibly difficult schedule starting now. And I think, listen, from a chief's perspective, if the chief's win, are there a lot of people who will not be sold on this perhaps, but you can only play use on your schedule.
Because the way people are going to look at it, a lot of people are going to say, well, the chief's speed up on the Broncos, what they're doing better now, but the other two opponents, the Colts, they're kind of off to a slow start. The dolphins are probably one of the worst teams in the NFL this season. And the Raiders, if the chief's to eat the Raiders, a lot of people will say, well, the Raiders haven't beaten anyone good, so that cannot be considered impressive. So you'll have your detractors there who will say those things. Now if the Raiders win, look, a lot of people, one of the popular segments on a lot of talk shows out there, contenders or pretenders. It's always too early to know who's really good and who's not. So the contenders versus pretenders segment, that's very popular this time of year. And when you look at the Raiders, a lot of people view them as a pretender.
I think that's fair. I mean, listen, have the Raiders proved a lot up to this point? Yes, they have. And I think that should be noted. But at the same time, they also have a lot to prove. So we will break that game down between the chiefs and the Raiders, talk about what the chiefs need to do. And I think there is a big weakness in the Raiders defense that a lot of people are not talking about that can be exploited, but Kansas City, their offensive tackles must step up and have the best game of the season. We will get into all of that here and more very excited about this podcast. We've got a jam packed edition of the chiefs zone. We're going to bring in, we're going to have 10 different interviews we're going to air on here. Now, I'm not going to air the entire interview. Just show you clips and highlights. So we will hear from the Rod and Cherry Foundation. Of course, Rod and Cherry, great friend of the podcast. They just had their 34th annual golf tournament.
Of course, they start off their four day extravaganza with the celebrity tailgate on Saturday night. That's always a great turnout. That was a lot of fun on Saturday for those who attended. And then on Monday and Tuesday, they have their golf tournament and they always have a great turnout for this. A lot of former chiefs, royals, some other local celebrities, which they'll say, KU, KC, Mizzou, just depending on availability. Of course, those people come out for this as well. So here's who we will hear from. We will play interviews from, of course, the man himself, Doron, Cherry, T. Tim Gronhard, two guys who will be part of the chiefs on Live By The Way. I'll remind you of that later on. Also Kendall Gamin, former chiefs long snapper, spent many years with the chiefs radio network as a silent reporter and then replace Lendossin as the color analyst, next to Mitch Holtis. Prof. Paul Hall of Famer, Will Shields, Danin Hughes, who's part of the chiefs radio network today, Desmond Moses, who joined the chiefs to save your Andy Reed, joined the chiefs
and also now with KCTV 5, former chiefs, safety, John McGraw, defense event, era kicks, Prof. Paul Hall of Famer and Super Bowl 4 champion, Jan Stenneroon. Man, it's always an honor to meet and talk to anyone who was part of the Super Bowl 4 team because there aren't unfortunately not many of those guys are around. So whenever you get an opportunity to talk to anybody from the golden age of Chiefs football, it truly is an honor. And we will hear from Jan later on. He had a couple of interesting comments that we will air and also former chiefs running back Ted McNight. So those are the 10 guys who we will hear from momentarily. So we'll get into all of that soon. Now somebody alluded to this in the comments, Mickey brought this up. There is some breaking news regarding Josh Simmons. This is perhaps the biggest Josh Simmons update we have received to date. So Andy reached spoke to the media today and Andy chuckled because he realized what
that press conference was turning into when he was getting a lot of questions about Josh Simmons once he revealed what exactly is going on with Josh Simmons. So I'm going to read you Andy's quote. He mentioned Josh is the only one who won't practice today. Now I'm going to quote him work for word here. He's had a bulging disc in his lower back. It's kind of hindered the strength of his leg, but he's working through it. He's here every day grinding away. We didn't have to make any roster moves, referring to the fact that they have a nut to put Josh Simmons on IR, which is surprising to a lot of people. We didn't have to put him on IR. It's all worked out. The positive is he's making progress and getting stronger. We've heard that for a couple of weeks now. And later on, he was asked whether or not because Andy revealed that he's got a bulging disc. This is the first time we have had any detail on this lower back. So Andy was asked whether or not this is something that's going to require surgery.
Andy says I think we're heading in the right direction. It shouldn't happen, but we will see where it all goes. I think knock on wood. We're going to be in a good place here with time. My assume. Now, listen, Andy reads. He says a lot of things and we kind of have to, I guess it's up for interpretation. Sometimes not that. I know people like Andy read the chief's regards that they don't like that kind of thing. But basically, that sounds like he should be available after the by-week. That's how it comes off to me. So, okay, we know what it is. Now what? Okay, everyone's been wanting to know what's going on. Oh my God, why can John, why is Josh Simmons refusing to play for? Why on August the 17th of all days? Why did Josh Simmons pick that day to refuse to play?
Well, he wasn't refusing anything. I mean, listen, we saw a training camp of him in the rehab area and now we know the details. It's a bulging disc. That is a pain in the ass. A pain in the ass in the back. Listen, I had a back injury last year. All be it, it was very minor, but still, back injuries are, they're not fun. They are not fun. We had Eric Warfield on the podcast many years ago and he talked about pushing through with a back injury in his career. I don't even want to know what that's like. There's a lot of these guys put pressures, excuse me, put pressure on themselves to fight through certain injuries. A back injury? Man, I don't know about that one. Jeff says, I'll be surprised if he plays this year. Look, I don't know what's going to happen. I thought Josh Simmons would have played in the first quarter of the season by now, which
we're about to wrap up this week. If you're not on IR, which he wasn't when the 53 man roster came out in late August, my assumption was, okay, he will play on Monday night football or he's got to play at some point right after that. Nope, not even close. Listen, I want Josh Simmons on the team. I also want him to play when healthy. I don't want anyone out there if they're not able to play up to their full potential because then you're doing your team of the service and you're also doing yourself a massive disservice. You're just going to make the pain far worse and it's going to turn what should be something short term into something long term. No one should ever force themselves through an injury. And this is serious injury. If you're missing four games, it's a serious injury. It is Tim Grunhardt, who we're going to hear from soon. He alluded that this is not something that anyone can just play through or push through.
And people were kind of questioning about it. So we'll see. That's all I really have to say. We will dive into the Josh Simmons thing. Let's come back on this exact same topic in exactly two weeks. If Josh Simmons, unless we get anything new until then, if Simmons is not practicing two weeks from now, which is the first practice after the by week, I've got questions. A lot of questions. I already have questions. I already listen, people are asking me am I concerned? Of course I'm concerned. This is your first round pick. The chiefs have had 10 different left tackles start ever since you cut Eric Fisher. Let's do a little bonus game here. Pop quiz. I'll quiz myself here. Who are the 10 guys? I'll try to go in order. And this is not going to be easy Orlando Brown, Donovan Smith, Juan Yemoris, 2024.
You got a lot of guys. Kingsley Suamata, IA Joe Tuni, DJ Humphries. Yeah, see how much six. This is not easy. Josh Simmons himself, Jalen Moore, Khalil Benson. I'm missing one guy. Help me out. Who is that 10th guy? I can't. I can't think of it right now. You get the idea. I mean, there are a lot of different guys. So the reason this is such a big deal is because you've had so many different guys start at left tackle. You were hoping that who am I missing? Oh, he's a Polic. That's who that's who it was. Forget about him. He's a Polic. You've had so many guys start at left tackle. You were hoping this guy would have been the final.
The final guy at left tackle for several years, unless you know you're resting guys in week 18. But man, I don't know anymore. The chiefs might have to start from scratch again. Look, I know people love to crucify Brett. Brett Veech has worked tirelessly on left tackle. He went guys off the street like DJ Humphries before or Pro Bowler just to try something. I mean, they got Kingsley Suo Matiya who Lewis Radeko has considered one of the best analysts today thought he was going to be a Pro Bowl or a left tackle. When the chiefs got Simmons, when he fell, and obviously now there's a reason why he fell to the chiefs. Not one single person questioned it. Every single person said, my God, what a steal. This might be Kansas City's long term solution at left tackle.
Unfortunately, not the case. So we're just going to have to see how things go at this point. We know the cause of it. Specifically, now we just have to wait. How about Andy becoming the winningest coach at Allegiance Hitting Him with a win on Sunday? Andy Reed was asked about it today. He said, I do not care. Which, listen, I think that's more for fans. Listen, by the time these guys retired, like, well, my homes look back and bring after retirement and bring up the fact that, yeah, that was pretty nice to win a lot of Allegiance stadium before finally losing. I don't think the chiefs have lost that so far stadium yet either. So Kansas City loves to win in these brand new stadiums. So yeah, I think that's more of a fan thing than anything else. So we'll see. Listen, a lot of things to get to before we get to the interviews that we got over at the golf course this week. I want to mention this. Patrick Mahomes and what the chiefs are doing with the run game under center.
How much that's really changed? You want to know how much of an impact this is having on the chiefs offense this much. Patrick Mahomes has the highest rate of big time throws on deep passes down field with 62.5%. The next person's player closest is Brock party at 57.1%. Then it's Drew Locke. Drew Locke. Marcus Marriota and there's a gap, a really significant gap between party and Locke and another significant gap between Locke and Marriota. That's how much this run game has changed to the point where you're out there. I mean throwing passes deep down the field. The wide receivers, a listen, the wide receiver, a lot of room to grow, but they are, I think more involved and contributing in a bigger manner this year than before. And that, to me, the most exciting part about all of this and the fact that the chiefs
have K9, it's really helped out. Colin Cowherd mentioned something on his radio show today. He mentioned Patrick Mahomes has the best passer rating when utilizing the play action. And that number is at 134. Yeah. I mean, this is a big difference here. And listen, let's not stop there. There's more we can share from this. Look at, look at these numbers right here. And I apologize. I don't remember. This came from me in Horowitz, I believe. Look at the numbers here. Okay. Obviously the darker blue it is, the better. Lighter blue is light blue and light red. That's kind of mediocre. And then the darker red is pretty bad. Look at 2023, 2024 and 2025. It's all in red. Everything from the Matt Nagy era in his second stint is bad.
I mean, and again, there's only a three game sample from 2026. But guys, it's not an accident. This is not a massive coincidence. And I know it. A lot of you guys are going to say, well, Farzane, it does help when the chiefs have a dominant running back in K9. Yes, it does. But who is your running back in 2022? It wasn't Kenneth Walker, it wasn't Jawale Charles, it wasn't Priest Holmes, wasn't Larry Johnson, wasn't Christian, Nikoie, it wasn't Marcus Allen. I mean, you're running back in 2022 as Isaiah Pacheco. And I don't want to downplay Isaiah Pacheco in 2022 because I thought he did some really good things that year. And it's unfortunate that in 2024, he had that injury and just was not the same since then. But look at the, I mean, less than the chiefs had Pacheco in 2023 and he was still effective very similar to what Pacheco was in 22. But these numbers do not even compare.
They're not even close. This is, this is galaxies apart. I mean, at this point, you cannot call this a coincidence with Eric B. Matt, no, Matt Nagy's not a good offensive coordinator. And listen, I will say this, I think it's going to be tough to judge Matt Nagy this year because they just went and traded for JJ McCarthy on Monday and they're right now really hoping and praying they can make the playoff. So Jackson dark can come back. It's not going to listen. Brian Burns just got lost for the season if I'm not mistaken. This is going to be our long year for the giants. It's not going to be easy. So I don't know if you can fairly judge Matt Nagy on this season, but I can judge him on this data right here with his time with the chiefs comparing it to be enemy. And what do I tell you guys in the off season? I do not want to be enemy to leave the chiefs ever again.
Now do I, that's me as a chief fan objectively? Do I want him to be a head coach? Yes, he should be a head coach. The fact that he got hosed previously, I does not make sense. I do not comprehend that one bit. And I told you guys in the off season, if the chiefs offense can revert back to what it was between 2018 and 2022 when the enemy was here previously, this is alone a good enough case for the enemy to get a head coaching offer. And it looks like it's trending in that direction to where the chiefs are reverting back to what they were from those five years when the enemy was previously here as the offensive coordinator. So listen, firings are going to usually you get a couple firings in college football around this time. The NFL might fire a coach in the month of October. And that's when the rumors start. It just takes one firing for head coaching rumors to come alive.
And Eric BNME's name should 1000% be a part of it. I don't want them to go as fan. I don't want them to go objectively speaking. That guy should be getting head coaching offers this upcoming year because this chiefs offense is looking very different. Yes, this is the best and most balanced. The offense has looked because of K9. What the enemy did before still is no accident because they didn't have K9 back then in that offense thrived. 2022, they didn't have Tyree kill. Who was their best wide receiver that year? Juju Smith Schuster and unfortunately, Juju was not the same guy that year like he was in Pittsburgh. So the chiefs didn't have a true standout number one wide receiver. They did not have this bell cow running back workhorse type of running back that year. And they still finished number one in the league in total yards and points scored and my homes almost won MVP unanimously and won Super Bowl MVP. And he really rallied in that second half to get the chiefs going against the Eagles
and Super Bowl 57 and win. The enemy and naggy. It's like night and day man. It really is. And that is the big change the chiefs desperately needed. And fortunately they have. Alessandro, that's not the only major change you're seeing on the team. I think one going to the defensive side. And like I said, you know, we got to talk about Brett Vichin just what he's done because I think he's really done a good job bringing in guys that need to help improve the defense. And we know the chiefs defense, the corner backs, they're they love to play that man coverage scheme. They play it well enough to where the three best corner backs when it comes to just man coverage. Are all chiefs players on pro football focus grades now take pro football focus grades for what you will. But it's no coincidence that the top three guys are chiefs guys monster Delane the rookie.
I know it's only one game for him, but he's also a rookie. He played three snaps against Denver and one full game against Miami Christian Fulton who kind of had a rough go at it against the Colts, but he's played really well in the other two games. No Williams has been very consistent for you. And the low who's number four, Trent McDuffy, who the chiefs had here for four years. Travis Hunter next on that list. A very talented football player who could play wide receiver and corner back. Veach drafted no Williams left last year. He brought in Christian Fulton last year monster drafted monster Delane this year. This is a damn good corner backs. Room now there is some negatives that come with it. And that is Lajerius Sneed. Now Lajerius Sneed. That's a really good years. His first in Kansas City, though in 2021.
Sneed did struggle and allowing a lot of receptions and yards. This year Lajerius Sneed leads the NFL and catches allowed and yards allowed. And this is him playing at slot corner back. I don't know if slot corner back is really the right fit for him. I know people were making a big deal of that in training camp and in the off season when he returned. slot corner back is not Lajerius Sneed's position. It's not. I think they've got to let Christian Roland Wallace or Jaden Kennedy play that spot because those guys I think are much better suited than Lajerius Sneed is. I think Lajerius Sneed needs to be in rotation with guys like Delane and Fulton more than Williams more than he should be at slot corner back. I know the chiefs want to utilize him a lot this year because of what he's done before. But slot corner back just does not seem to be the position for him. So they've got to look at other areas and get him involved in those spots. And hopefully they get that figured out because I like Sneed. He's great in the open field with tackling, but that's really been his only positive.
He had a great first game against Denver. Since then, he's been picked on a lot and it's been kind of a rough go for Lajerius Sneed this season. Before we go any further, I want to let you know this podcast is brought to you by the Chiefs Zone Live, which will take place on October the 17th at a Maristar Casino. We will be joined by Chiefs Hall of Famers, Doron Cherry, Tim Grunhard Bill Moss. You're going to hear from Doron and Tim very shortly with some interviews that we got over at the golf course this week during the Doron Cherry Foundation Golf Tournament. So make sure you guys get your tickets at DoronCherryFoundation.org. Look for the events tab, find this exact same photo and purchase your tickets. Again, all ticket proceeds benefit the Doron Cherry Foundation. And I cannot wait to see all of you guys there. So definitely looking forward to that. And speaking of the Doron Cherry Foundation, let's start with this year as we play some of these clips that we got from the golf course. Look, I've always said, I get that there are negative things that happen publicly with players. And I think they should be covered. And I also think that it should be covered whenever guys are doing good things off the field, whether it's current players or former players. It certainly does. And we're very fortunate to have such a great relationship with Doron Cherry and his team, Aaron, who's done a great job of running things with the foundation.
It's really been great just kind of getting to know them and working with them. And here's Doron talking about his 34th annual golf tournament for his foundation. You know, I would have never thought that we'd get to 34 years and now we're getting, we're at 34 and looking forward to 35. So it's like, wow, this is amazing. And you know, you can't do it without the support of sponsors. You know, we've got tremendous sponsors. Allied is stepped up and been tremendous and Anisah Bush and of course, the University, KCU are major sponsors. So, and then we had a new one that came on this year, ECA, which has just been tremendous. So when you have sponsors like that and all the other team, whole sponsors that we were able to get, you know, that's why we can last for 34 years. So it's really a tribute to, you know, what those sponsors believe in what we're doing
on mission and our vision and how we're trying to help our community in the best way we can. The awareness number one and, you know, just the fact that we've had some tremendous volunteers and people who have stepped up and looked for different opportunities that we could support. And I think that's been the difference, really. We started with one group and now we branched into two other charities that are main charities, but we're also branching out and doing grants to a bunch of other non-for-profits. So we're trying to connect the dots in the community and when you connect dots in the community, it just seems like, okay, you're reaching out, you're touching other folks that want to help and support you. And for the most part, that's what's really happened is that we branched out so much and now we're getting to a situation where we're getting more faces, newer faces, more people, more organizations and so it's helped us expand tremendously.
The reason you hear people laughing, there was a robot lawnmower. It's like, think of like those remote control cars, but bigger. It just suddenly stopped right behind me. And as soon as I was done interviewing Doran, everyone was trying to get my attention and they were like, hey, do not walk backwards. So that's why you hear so much laughter in the background. That thing moves very, very slow. I've never seen one of those things before. Anyway, great stuff from Doran. And we'll hear from Doran again because I did ask him for his opinion on the chiefs and I definitely want to get his thoughts on the defensive pass and a fear and controversial one on Sunday night football, given that he played safety in the NFL. But you know, it really is. One thing I like about the Doran Cherry Foundation is that they do a lot with a lot of different communities, organizations, charities, camp quality, answering the call, score one for health. I know there's another one I'm forgetting off the top of my head. I don't have that in front of me.
But they really do a good job of helping out with these foundations. A lot of you guys know my buddy Jackson, I've got his unique trading card right there. If I quit moving in the wrong direction there, right there. Doran had the opportunity to meet him at the Ronald McDonald House and just things like that. He's been doing things like that in the community for 34 years. Listen, Neil Smith has done a tremendous job as well with his foundation, him and Derek Thomas, family and Oderian Thomas, who is a super nice guy. Either way, if you guys have never met him, Daryl and that as well as Neil. They've done a great job in the community for such a long time as well. You don't see it very often where there are former players who are still connected with the teams that they played for. But with the communities, that is a huge deal. And for Doran to do that for 34 years, I know Neil's been doing it for 30 plus years as well. That's really tremendous. And that really speaks a lot about who they are. Great players, but even better people off the field. So that's awesome.
Always great stuff from Doran Sherry. So big congratulations to him and his team on a great weekend. Let's hear from Doran Sherry again. Now I'm going to play clips from Doran Sherry and John McGraw. And I asked him about the whole defensive passing of here in controversy on Sunday night football. Here are their thoughts on that. We're always getting a bad head and there's a stick. It seems like on the defensive side. I mean, I think the league has to address it. And I think from my vantage point, you watch the replay and everything is different when you see the replay because you really see what the truth is. And you can see the receiver grabbed the defender and hold the defender off and literally grab him, push him away from him. And then act like the defender was holding him, which was not the case. My thing is, why can't the officials get together on a call like that? Because there's a front official that's looking at the play and the back official doesn't
see everything that's going on, literally, and he throws the flag. So I think the league, that's one of those situations where if you can reverse something else and you got guys up top and they can make a quick decision based on other factors that go on in the game where they can change the call immediately, they could surely do it for pass and a appearance like that because that totally was not pass and a appearance against the defender. You always want to make sure that the integrity of the game stays in place. And for me, that was a game changing decision. That gave them the ball. That would have been an interception, clearly an interception and possibly the game would have been over, it would have been in the Rams to control the outcome of that game and not the Broncos because they get a favorable call on a play like that. So the league can do something about that. I think hopefully they can address situations like that.
And I mean, it's easy to do. We have the technology now to be able to do that. So let's take a look at some issues like that. Okay, so that is from Doron Sherry. Let's also hear from another former chief safety. And that would be John McGraw. Here is what he had to say about the defensive pass, just defensive pass and appearance in general. It's extremely difficult, right? And I think it was even worse back when I was playing just the bias towards the offensive player. It's gotten better, but still referees are going to see the game through the lens, the bias of the offensive guy gets the benefit of the doubt and the defensive guys guilty until proven innocent kind of thing. So as a defensive back, you have to be great. You have to be a league, you have to be perfect, right? And if you're not perfect, then the chance call is going to go against you. But it pains me to see defensive backs play perfectly. That was cool. I play perfectly and still get penalized for it. That's really hard to watch, but at the same time, it's just the nature of the game.
Refs are doing the best they can. It's a hard job. Because those calls are normally really pivotal points in the game and have such huge consequences on the game, I think it should be part of replaces. If you're wondering what that was, a bird landed on my arm for half a second. That's why he got a little distracted and the camera could kind of shook a bit. So yeah, that's ever happened to me before, but there's always a first for everything. They're both right. Listen, I love the idea of replay assists. Whoever came up with the idea of replay assist deserves a raise. However, whoever idea it was to limit on how often replay assist should intervene. Why? Why is there a limit on what replay assists can and cannot do? I know a lot of people are going to say, well, if replay gets assist and throws a penalty on everything and I know holding is the one thing because holding happens on every play,
then we're going to have longer games. I'll continue to say this. I've said it many times. We can't bitch and moan about long football games and then cry when there are penalties that just completely rob a team in the waiting stages of the game. But no one ever cares about a miss call in the first quarter. But when a miss call or a bad call happens in the final five minutes of a game, that's when everybody's talking about it. Listen, they're both right. Like they have the technology, we have cameras on pylons for crying out loud. The NFL loves to use, we have cameras from every angle. The entire sideline can be seen at once. There's a camera for that somewhere out there. The all 22, I mean, listen, there's no reason why it can't be fixed.
It's on the NFL to get that figured out. All right, let's get away from NFL talk and go back to the chiefs here. I wanted to ask a couple of these guys on their thoughts on the chiefs in their 3 and I'll start after bouncing back from last season. Let's go to Tim Grunhard, one of the guys by the way who will be at the chiefs on live was great to see Tim. Haven't seen Tim in person since, since he was the offensive line coach at KU. Always love talking to Tim. Tim's a great guy and always great listening to him on the radio. Tim mentions that this chiefs team, as good as they are, still trying to figure some things out. Here he is. Not everything's been perfect. The great thing is, is there winning football games and you can get some teaching points and get some work done with the guys and make sure that they're getting better and better. I think Spags talked about it a little bit. It takes about a month to know what you have. It's nice to have three wins while you're still figuring out what you have.
Running game looks good. Patrick being healthy looks great. I think the defense is starting to gel a little bit with the younger guys. So pretty good start for the chiefs. All right. Let's go to another former chief. This time, Dan and Hugh, who is part of the chiefs radio network. He feels like the chiefs have yet to play their best football far from being able to play their best football. The coolest thing is that we're three and no and we haven't played our best football. I think that should be the most encouraging factor to bounce back from a 6-11 season. We were one in nine in one score games last year. The previous year, we were 12-0. So the difference and the margin comes down to that factor. I think just yesterday there were 11 games of 15 that were one score games. So it's about being a team that can win tight games and you're going to play tight opponents. It's face it. Everybody still feels that when they play the chiefs, they're playing a Super Bowl game.
Miami, that was their Super Bowl. And they played well and we still won by 14 points. So I think that's where I get encouraged from because there's still so much left in the tank. There's so much meat on the bone left for this chiefs team, offensively, defensively, and special teams. So getting wins now, still staying at top of the AFC West is key. The first four games, all AFC opponents actually have first five games. So we're three and all right now, which puts us ahead a lot of people. Yeah, that's a really good point. All AFC teams and you're undefeated so far. And if you can win these next two games, you will definitely be way ahead. Winning your divisional games matter, winning the conference games certainly play a big hand. And that will help you win a lot of tie breakers in these situations, something that chiefs certainly need. Listen, he has an interesting point. They've yet to play their best football. I thought that you everyone will play your best football. You never want to not play your best football. But if you can find a way to improve as the season goes on, I think that's important.
Like the chiefs, they looked, they got it through a little bit of a slow start. I mean, yes, they got the interception and then the touchdown immediately don't start the game. But after that, it was a little bit of a slow process to get things going. And I mentioned for a while, if that's going to be Patrick's first game, might be, you know, a little rust there. But Patrick on that first drive looked great. A couple drives after chiefs kind of took some time to figure things out. But man, the day not wear out that Broncos defense, a great Broncos defense with the run game in canine. Yeah, absolutely. And that I think is what the chiefs needed to kind of just elevate their game and just beat the Broncos the way they did that night. And you're hoping there's going to be more of that. Obviously, some struggles against the, against the, the cults, especially on the defensive side. Look, the chiefs and Damon mentioned something very interesting. As you can tell, he said yesterday, obviously this interview is from Monday.
Yeah, there were a lot of one score games on Sunday. The chiefs covered the spread. Their game was relatively boring compared to a lot of other games out there. So I, and I say this because like I said with the Raiders, sure, the three teams of Raiders have beat have a combined record of one and eight. I remember in 2024 when the chiefs were coming out with these narrow victories, just squeezing out all these weird ugly wins. But they're winning. Yeah, sure, it might be a little bit of a miracle that the Raiders weren't paying attention and fumble on a snap or that Isaiah likely with a toe was out of bounds. The, the rookie defensive act for the Bengals, a committee pass interference on fourth and forever to give the chiefs a first down and essentially put them in a field goal range. But you don't ever apologize for that. I mean, those are still things that you need to lock down and make sure you, because you
have to stay in bounds for that touch on account. You have to not commit passing or appearance for that to be a turnover on down. You have to make sure everyone's paying attention and have a proper snap for things to, to go the way that you want it to go. So listen, tough games are going to happen. I remember when the chiefs were bad from 07 to 2012 and they had some very close games against great teams and you thought, wait, they might pull off an upset here. And those great teams still want to do good things they never apologized for barely beating the chiefs back then. Here is former chiefs running back Ted McKnight, always going to talk in a Ted McKnight and he weighed in on some of the things going on with the chiefs and their run game and how much that's taking pressure on Patrick Mahomes. I think you've taken a lot of pressure off of Mahomes. Are you giving them weapons that he didn't know that he hadn't had in a while? You've got great running backs that are really just eating it up. Walker is just having a record setting season to this point. And I think what it's really done is it's also given the young guys behind him great
incentive because their thought is if we don't perform, we're not going to get much play in time. And I think that that's helping them a lot. I think the offensive line is really performing up to a great standard. And I think that obviously the tight ends, Kelsey and the tight ends are doing what they need to do. But the defenses is holding their own. So right now, I'm really positive. I think that getting past the Raiders, someone predicted they could go 4-0 the first part of the season and come Sunday, they can find out. Yes, and we will find out on that this week. And I'll get into what some of these guys had to say about the Chiefs Raiders game coming up very soon because a lot of people have their minds on that. I still want to talk about what some of these guys had to say about the way the Chiefs have started off. I want to go to Desmond Moses next because I mentioned when telling you guys who we're going to hear from. I mentioned that Desmond joined the Chiefs in 2013, the same year Andy Reed got here. That's also the same year Travis Kelsey got here. So Desmond has been around Travis Kelsey and knows the thing or two about him, especially
with just how he started off with his career. And I asked Desmond with people bringing up Travis Kelsey's age, not being as dominant as he once was and even people accusing him of being distracted because of his relationship now marriage, Taylor Swift, just kind of what his thoughts are on the fact that he's looking like the way he played prior to these last couple of years with a offense that just wasn't very good under Matt Nagy. You know, they keep counting him out every year, man. And I, we did this show last week. We talked about the Taylor Swift effect. And I think just being married, having that balance in your life, man, he looks a step quicker. He looks a little leaner. You know, that turnover, I seen it on that long run. He looks like old Travis Kelsey. And if he can, you know, kind of maintain this form for the next 16 games, 17 games, I think Kansas City will be very proud. Yeah. And listen, what Travis Kelsey doing is remarkable.
And I said this last year, I didn't think Travis Kelsey had a bad season last year. Now the year before, where Kelsey had an awful lot of the numbers just to be exact here. But in 2024, Travis Kelsey was averaging eight and a half yards of reception. That's the lowest of his career. Yet eight or 23 yards, 97 catches. It's a lot of catches. But the yardage wasn't as high as it should have been three touchdowns that year. And I think that same year was the year he either tied or passed Tony Gonzalez for most touchdown receptions in chief's history. I don't know if I can remember if I was touchdown or so. Yeah, it was touchdown receptions because any eventually surpassed presomes for total touchdowns as a chief. But anyway. His numbers went up. He had fewer receptions last year, but slightly more yards and more touchdown grabs. And his average was much higher at 11.2 yards per reception. Now still, that's much slower compared to the rest of the seasons he's had. But it was a big step up from 2024.
And look right now, it's a very early, but he's averaging 16 and a half yards of reception. That's the highest of his career. But again, that's only on a three game window. So we can't really use that much right now. But my point is Kelsey, what he did, so what he's done so far in three games, it's the best three games start he's had since 2022. And again, I don't think it's a massive coincidence. That was the last time Eric Biennium was here in Kansas City. Fourteen catches 231 yards, two touchdowns leading the league and yard after the catch. He's one of the best tie-ins in the NFL. And look, go back to 2024 for a moment where he had the eight and a half yards of catch. He was top five that year among tight ends and yards and receptions, same thing last year. So no, he's not lighting it up like, or at least the last two years, he was not lighting it up the same way he did in 2022 where he had over 1,300 yards or in 2020 where he had
1,400 yards. 2018 where he broke the record for receiving yards by a tight end in a season and then George Kiddell took it from him in 30 seconds and then Kelsey got it back in 2020. Like Kelsey's doing a lot of things that we just haven't seen at the tight end position. And he's doing it all over again. He is turning back to the clock. And that's great to see. This run game is really helping out with that. If you have to listen to the wide receiver still have room to grow. Like I said earlier, they're still contributing, I think in a better manner this year than last year. And hopefully that, you know, this is not it. This is not the ceiling here. We're going to see more from them. But I think if defenders get, if defenders focus more on Kelsey, then not all open things up for Rossi Rice, the Taiko and Thorne Xavier were the Jalen Royals. Eventually, Cyrus Dallan, a lot of you guys have been wanting to see.
And I think we will at some point. So that's great to see from Travis Kelsey. Let's go to Will Shields. He weighed in a pro football Hall of Famer, also on the Hall of Fame committee. And he talked about the run game. And listen, if there's anyone that knows a thing or two about a great offensive line and having a great run game, it sure as hell is Will Shields because he was here when the chief said that's stout offensive line with Presolm's and Larry Johnson. They put some things together. I think, you know, the great thing about it, they made some changes, fixed some things, but then on the other hand, you still got guys that are hurt. So you're still trying to get them everybody healthy and see what that looks like and see if that's either better or worse. But we're excited about it. They're playing well. You know, they're doing things which they need to be done and shoot, you know, the addition of Walker is unbelievable. Well, I think they've done a great job. I think that's what makes a difference. If you can keep your quarterback out of harm's way without him having to feel like he has to throw the ball every down or do something spectacular to make things happen, that makes life a little easier. That also gives you a bigger playbook to use.
Yeah. And he's right about all of that because that is something that this chief's team has tried to improve is protecting Patrick Mahomes. And listen, it hasn't been perfect. Any alluded to, you know, Josh Simmons not being back yet. Listen, we already talked about it at the beginning of the podcast. So we'll have to see. But you know, that's one of the concerns right now on the team. Another concern is Harrison Bucker. He has missed two field goals in the first three games. And listen, in the preseason, he had some inconsistency. He had that 69 year field goaler and field goal. And then could not make a PAT, could not make another field goal. Like people were just throwing off by his inconsistency there. And right now, I don't think people really know what to expect from but you're moving forward. He's yet to make a field goal of 50 yards out.
Here's Jan Centaurude, Profit Paul Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion who weighed in on butler says he's not worried about Harrison butler. He is very good. He's only 32 jobs in the world. So all of them are really good. And of course, they practice more now. They have better fields, better conditions, better getting so good. And he's not that easy. He's a hard job, he's a pressurized job. And he is really excellent. He's excellent. He said, every kicker in the world, I made some kicks that they should have missed. But he is one of the very best in the league. It's a nice young man to go with it. So I'm not worried about it. Listen, has Harrison Bucker struggled recently? Yes. Now compared to the rest of the NFL, he's still one of the better kickers in the league. If not Harrison Bucker, then who? That's my question. Listen, I've said this before, I'm a not consider myself a more patient fan.
I know in the social media area, which is, you know, it's fun to see the reactions from fans and even the media, former players, especially those who are part of the media, just their reactions in real time. Some of these guys do live streams reacting to things. I know Barstool Sports is very popular with their live streams during sporting events. But here's my thing. If not Harrison Bucker, who? Because I think what the social media area has done is we want that instant gratification so badly that whenever someone's not getting off to a hot start, like Peter Woods, people start panicking and they're wondering is he a bust? Whenever a team with a new head coach or a new offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator, what have you, whenever they're gone off to a slow start for two games, oh no, fire that coach. You got to slow down with that man. Again, Bucker's got to be better.
He's played, he's been much better than this. But to want him gone and I know some of that might be politically driven, which I don't give a damn about personally, but I know that's a thing. I'm not going to ignore it. I'm going to pretend like that's on out there. That's nonsense. Again, I'll ask this question. Because whenever you want someone fine or you want someone to get cut from the team, you better bring someone that's going to improve that position. And I don't think you can do that right now with your kicker. I just don't. I'll reiterate. You can't replace him. But he should be better. He's still, in my opinion, one of our kickers in the NFL. I think a more serious concern has to be the defensive line. The chief's defense as a unit overall defense. They got 25 pressures and four sacks on Bowen X.
No sacks these last two games. And I know some people have said, and we brought this up on Monday's podcast. Malik Willis is an athletic quarterback. He's one of the more athletic quarterbacks in the league, one of the more agile Cubes out there. Yes, he is. But he was also sacked nine times the first two weeks, including four or five times against the Raiders. So other teams have been able to get to Malik Willis. Why not Kansas City? That's a concern. I talked to former chief's defense event Eric Hicks. And I asked for his thoughts. And he said this defensive line. They need to ramp it up and start playing better. Yeah, you have to be careful with that. If you don't get four men pressure and Steve Spegnolo has to send too many blitzes, too many times. And obviously expose those corners and safeties to routes down the field. So we definitely want to ratchet up the pressure with our four men. Hopefully Peter Woods can get in there. Chris Jones could do his thing. And we'll see what happens. Look, the chiefs do have an opportunity with that looking at the Raiders interior offensive
line. And we'll get into that very soon. But and by the way, Matt, you raise a good point talking about the the cap. If I'm not mistaken, he, well, he's no longer the highest paid kicker in the NFL. I think two other guys have surpassed that. And obviously that's like with my homes. He's the highest paid now, but that'll change also very soon. That's just the way it all goes. Um, yes, got to be hard to do. But no, I think, you know, I mentioned this many times. The chiefs have invested so much financially and with draft capital for their defensive line. For them to not have consistent pressure on Cubes is pretty annoying right now. I spoke to John McGraw. Let's bring John McGraw back in here for a moment. And I asked him about the young secondary. No Williams was drafted last year. The chief drafted Jaden Hicks a couple years ago. Shamari Conor drafted one year before this year, you drafted Jaden Kennedy and, um, and monster Delane. Uh, you brought in some veterans in Lajerius need who's familiar with the system, but is
struggling and also a low heat gillment. So I asked John McGraw, how long can it take for a new secondary with so many young guys that are getting a lot of playing time that they've never had in the NFL before? How much time can that take for guys to gel? You know, I feel like in general defenses tend to gel a little faster than offense, just because of the complexity of it. I usually I'd say a good whole season before a secondary really comes together and is on the same page and communicating well. Now, I think that's accelerated with great coaching, right? Like we have. So, um, you know, maybe by halfway through the season, there's really just on the same page and you don't even have to really signal because you're seeing the same thing at the same time. That always takes a little bit, um, a little bit longer to get there, especially with the younger guys. Um, but again, I think that the coaching is so elite defensively for the chiefs. Of course, the whole staff defensively that it should accelerate. You know, both John McGraw and Eric Hicks mentioned coaching, um, Eric Hicks mentioned, Spags name, um, McGraw obviously eluding two Spags and also Dave Marrett, who's one of
the best secondary coaches in the NFL. I would imagine at some point he elevates and becomes a defensive coordinator somewhere in the NFL unless he just wants to wait around and see if he's got a chance whenever Steve Spagnolo either gets a head coaching job if he does get another opportunity or just retires. Um, but he's right, you know, with with Kansas, by the way, I mentioned it earlier. I'll show you again, look at the highest rated and take it for what you will. I know people don't like PFF grades, but the highest graded cornerbacks in man coverage this year, the top three guys are chiefs players. The fourth guy is a forward chief. So there's a reason for that. I mean, Kansas City does a good job with their cornerbacks and getting them ready in man coverage. I remember in 2022 when the chiefs had Trent McDuffy, Josh Williams, Brian Cook, so many young guys they drafted that year with the defensive backs. And I thought man, I'm a little concerned because the chiefs don't have a lot of veterans at the quarterback position. And what do you know those cornerbacks excel that year.
They really did. And I think it showed you that coaching does matter and not just with your head coach, not just with your coordinators, with your position coaches as well. And I think they've played a really big hand and has done so in recent years with helping these young guys get off to such great start in their careers. Let's keep this trade rolling here. So I'll have some clips to play. Let's go to Tim Grunhard. He mentioned an area where the chiefs offense needs to improve. There isn't a big list of that, but there's one that he's pointing out. And I think it's an important one to keep an eye on. Listen to this. Everything but the shortyardian goal line has been good. You know, I think their first down run has been great, which really helps out Patrick. You know, more of the play action stuff. I think Andy talked about it that the run game is really helping the play action game, which I think is going to be big for this team. You know, one of the things they've struggled with over the last couple of years is against the big play down the field. And I think they're going to start seeing some of those who are incredibly worried about K9 running the ramp.
They've got against the men first and second down. They got a little bit better in the goal line situation. It's funny. They can get four or five yards of crack on first, second down the middle field, but then they get down to the goal line. It has some issues. So maybe it's something with the scheme. Maybe it's something with K9. You know, he wasn't really a goal line back with Seattle. So maybe they'll figure that out, but so far so good. Yeah, that's interesting. Obviously that's an area where the chiefs were dominant in last year with Karimhan. I think the only time, and I'm sure I might be forgetting another one, the only time I can recall Karimhan getting stuffed on fourth and short was in week two last year when the chiefs played the Eagles. They went for it on their own side of the field. That was quite risky. And they just could not get anything, no, no push, nothing on that play. So I'm curious how the chiefs can improve on that. At some point do they bring back the QB sneak?
I mean, look at case kingdom, 38 year old case kingdom. Is that is age right? On Monday night football, you guys have in the chat, I see you guys talking about Monday night football and how that went. Kingdom just took a snap under center at the goal line and just with ease gotten for a QB sneak in the end zone. If the Eagles have so much effort that they put into a push push, case kingdoms, QB sneak was, he made that look so effortless. I don't know if that gets brought back for the chiefs to solve their goal line. Himmiss haps? Well, let's see. Obviously, Grunhards, the big one he's alluding to is the Colts game where the chiefs got, they stuffed K9, I'm sorry, not the chiefs, but the Colts stuffed K9 three times. The chiefs went for it on fourth down, tried to throw off the Colts and got that near the corner of the end zone to Jalen Royals. So hopefully they can get that figured out because those are certainly going to play a
big hand. Let's go back to Yon Center, and just his thoughts on how the rest of the season might go for Kansas City. I've got a room to live for me and I felt pretty tough. It's not easy to win. And as long as we have Patrick Maholms and Andy Reed, I think we're going to be a content of strong content this year. I think you're going to be really good. It was a new season start, that's your, been over that. And it's just looking for a championship here. It can't look. You learn from the mistakes that you've made before, but once you get the camp, that's all forgotten. That's, that's, I think, happening more. All about the new season and we're in the, being that tremendous coach of the years. I bet they, they're positive. They work hard. Great leadership. I really, really don't have a great year. Yeah, I mean, listen, they're off to a great start. And I think that. Listen, a lot of people were not sure what the chief's going to look like against Denver. Nobody thought the chief's were going to win that game the way they did 31 to 10.
I mean, who expected a blowout? If, if you were told before the game that, hey, this game's going to be a blowout, you know, bet how you will, I think more people would have been inclined to pick Denver to win that game because people just weren't sure what Kansas City was going to look like. I mean, I had Denver fans commenting, oh, this is not going to be a good start for Kansas City. No, no, what? I mean, listen, Denver's two and one. And by the way, Denver fans, I know you guys are listening. Don't act like you're not. How does it feel to get that referee narrative? That's not fun, is it? I'm seeing Denver fans scramble on social media pushing back on these narratives. Oh, I know what that's like. I know what that's like. But yeah, I mean, listen, the chiefs humiliated the Broncos. And listen, obviously we get lots of overreactions from week one, but my goodness.
People had their concerns for Denver wondered, is this a sign of things to come or is it just one game? So far, Denver's proven it's just one game. I mean, they can compete with the rest. And let's give them credit for the Rams game because they came back when the Rams looked like they were in full control. Now, let's move forward. And let's talk about the chiefs and the Raiders. What must the chiefs do to beat the Raiders? Here's Sim Granthard's answer. Well, first of all, they've got to control the deep. That's why the Raiders, they're really good. Genties of hell, they're running back. Cousins, this is a quality veteran guy who's not going to make a lot of mistakes. It's going to come down to once again, like always. You know, they can't turn the ball over. And all these are a key, especially in the special teams. You can't find yourself about a 35 or 40 year old line. And then obviously, you've been mentally and you're backed down your 15th, that's a 2013 year penalty. You can't have those things happen. But listen, they just got to play their football, brother ball.
I hit some big plays down the field. And once again, penalties turn over. They're going to be key. Yeah, I got a little windy there. Perfect timing. But he's right, though. He's right. And all starts with that Denver pass. I'm sorry, the Raiders pass, we'll get into that very shortly as we'll break down the game here. Let's hear from more guys. We haven't heard from Kendall Gaming yet. This is the clip I want to play from Kendall Gaming. I asked for his thoughts, being the analyst that he's been for so many years. Did it for the Chiefs Radio Network still doing it on multiple radio stations in Kansas City? Here is what Kendall Gaming had to say. When you look at Las Vegas, it's really a stale environment. There's probably a B about the wildest that they've played in there. And it won't be like the old call of seeing that we used to play in that dump, by the way. But I think they've got to withstand the emotion that's going to be out there for the Raiders. Listen, the Raiders haven't been like this for quite some time.
And this is not to get on them, even though I don't mind doing that. But a lot of those kids there that are playing players, they don't know how to handle this, honestly. If the Chiefs can come out and hit them in the mouth a little bit, I think that'll be a good thing. But either way, it's a good game. I don't know if we know what we have from the Raiders yet. So it'll be interesting to see. I don't think anybody had Raiders and the Chiefs on the Bingo card is being three and no. And I think last time the two teams were undefeated when they played, was in 95 September 17th, I think, where they were both two and no. And I think that was a James Hasty pick, six, to go the distance and win the game for the Chiefs. I hope it's not that type of game this this year with the exception of the Chiefs winning, but either way, looking forward to seeing a good one. I love the jabs from Kennel game in there, especially the same part. Because I remember, I think it was Kennel game and who posted a picture of the Raiders, they got like a large cup from a McDonald's it looked like. And they taped it to the ceiling to cover a leak or something.
Yeah. That new stadium is nice, man. And I hope the Chiefs can learn from the chargers, the Raiders. Obviously, the Chiefs spent a whole week at the Raiders practice facility going into Superl 58. And they've been inside a Legion Stadium many, many times and I have as well. It's a great facility. I've also been behind the scenes at a Legion Stadium a couple of times. Do that stadium is nice. I mean, listen, error has great null. But that's more for environment reasons. I know people have their opinions, but anyway, not to get away from all of that stuff. So what he said, but yeah, I think those are the kinds of things that you got to get ready for with the Raiders. And Kennel is obviously not really on the Raiders bandwagon yet. And I not that he will ever be. But his point is he's not a believer in the Raiders 3 no start. Some people have that right now. That's why I said, if the Chiefs lose to the Raiders, anyone that called the Raiders
pretenders, you got to rescind that. And I hope it doesn't come down to that. I hope we don't have to do that. But if the Chiefs win, especially in a blowout, a lot of people are going to be questioning what's going to happen to the Raiders the next six to eight weeks because there's a lot of that people will start asking about the Raiders and whether their 3 no start was true or not. Here's Ainin Hughes, who will be on the call this Sunday on the Chiefs Radio Network. And he offered what the Chiefs must do on the offensive side. He has kind of an interesting comment there. Listen to this. I think we got to go out there. We have to protect the football. We had an interception this past week. Patrick Stone, two interceptions. I don't blame him for both of them. I think the wide receivers are at fault for that. But the fact remains is Max Crosby, you know where he's coming from. You know where he's lining up. He's going to wreak some havoc and try to disrupt Patrick. So we got to account for him. And we got to make plays. We got to make deeper plays down the field. I feel like we got away from scoring more touchdowns.
We got to score touchdowns and not lean on Harrison Butcher in the field goal game. And the defense has to be able to get their offense off the field. That's going to be the key is that they can keep their offense on the field and keep out defense stagnant on the sideline. Then this is going to be a long day for us. Yeah, he's right. I thought that was an interesting, uh, oh, oops, apologies. I thought that was an interesting thing he said there where, you know, getting more deep plays down the field. They got away from that. He's right. Let's utilize more of that from Ty Quanthor. And look, let me just say this about Xavier Worthy because I know a lot of people have been getting on Xavier Worthy and his slow progression since he's been drafted. I thought last year when the chief's, you know, uh, passing down the field when that was not there, the connection was not in sync. Worthy was beating defenders. He was torching them. It's just him and my homes could not connect down the field and the same with Ty Quant Thornton and my homes down the field. You saw Thornton consistently beat defenders worthy did it as well, not as often as Thornton,
but did it more times than not. And my eyes at all off season and even last year that if you bring back Eric B. Enemy that it will help improve the connection down field, well, they brought back Eric B. Enemy and so far, you're seeing the big plays come more often than it did last year in the first three weeks. Those were big. Those were big for Kansas City. And I think in this game and we'll get into the breakdown very soon, we've got one more clip to play as a matter of fact. We will break down that Raider's secondary. Yes, the Raiders defensively do a lot of great things, but they also have some glaring holes that nobody has been able to exploit just yet. So we'll get in that very shortly. Here is the final clip. This is from, hey, perfect person to end this with. We started these clips by starting off with the Ron Cherry.
Let's end it with him who by the way had a fantastic weekend, 34 years with his foundation. Again, go support it. By the way, my call to action to you guys in addition to our supporting our fellow sponsors, the Chiefs on Live and SeatGeek go support the Ron Cherry Foundation. Okay, just search the Ron Cherry Foundation on Facebook and Instagram. If you're on both search for them on both, give them a follow. If you haven't already, you must do it because they do a lot of great things in the community. And obviously if you haven't been able to tell, we've been collaborating with them a lot of these last year and a half I want to say. We got to know them a couple of years ago, just kind of introducing ourselves having a deron on the podcast, but we've really gotten to know DeRont and his team over the last year really. And they've been supportive of us. We've been supportive of them. And I want you guys to show them a lot of love. Go follow them on Facebook and Instagram. Let them know you came from the Chiefs on Podcast.
Let them know that I sent you. Show them some love and be supportive of the things they do in the community because in my opinion, listen, there are other former chiefs that do great things in the community as well today. But in my opinion, I don't think anyone's been more active among former chiefs in the community still to this day than DeRont. And we're very honored to have partnered with them and do all these great things. So, ending it with them. And here is DeRont's keys to what the chiefs must do this Sunday. You get off to a three and a half star. That's what this team used to do, right? It was a custom to do. So, I like where we are. They're going to have a tough game this week because the Raiders, I'm sure, they're feeling good about themselves. They're three and no. They haven't been three and no for a long, long time. With the new coaching staff, I think he's in still a different sense of belief in those players. And so, it should be pretty good. I'm looking forward to it. They got to control the ball. They can't make mistakes because they're away from home.
So mistakes can play a big part. You know, you got to play really, really well on the road in all three phases, offense, defense, and of course, special teams. So, I think if we can control the game, run in the ball, and then Patrick doing what Patrick does, I think we should be okay. All right. So, a big thanks to Daran once again. And yes, he makes some good points, you know? I think Patrick, and just taking advantage of that run game. And I think that's actually going to be a very good one against the Raiders. Once again, big thanks to Daran Cherry Foundation. If you haven't already, and I'm serious, go show them some love on their social media. Just search Daran Cherry Foundation on Facebook and Instagram. And tell them you came from the Chiefs. Don't tell me that I sent you guys and support them and everything they do. Even sharing their content really does go a very long ways. And again, I mentioned this earlier, and I'll say it again, the Chiefs don't live. All the ticket proceeds for that benefit that are on Cherry Foundation.
So we're not able to do our live podcast, which the two live shows we've done have been in collaboration with Daran and his foundation. All the ticket proceeds benefit his foundation. So if you haven't already, make sure you get your tickets over at DaranCherryFoundation.org. All right. Before we move forward, let me read some comments here. I know we played a bunch of clips right there from all those former Chiefs. Oh, by the way, a big thank you once again to Daran Cherry, Wilchields, Tim Grunhard, Kendall Gammon, Dating Hughes, Desmond Mosos, John McGraw, Eric Hicks, John Cinterude, and Ted McNite. So being able to talk to those guys, certainly in honor, and they did a great job offering their opinions and views on things. So if you see any of them on social media, hey, show them some love because they were great to us and all of this. Eric says follow, create and try on the sneak. Yeah, sounds obvious. That's the, that's what he should do. So we'll see if they, if they ever make use of that. Hurtcraft from Denver Peeps before the game and nothing since then. Yeah.
Perfect sense. Uh, cousins is a good quarter. I've always liked Kirk cousins. I know there are a lot of mixed opinions on him. I think look, he's done a good job with the Raiders and I know he's gotten kind of like the, he got, uh, he got the wrong end of the, of the stick in, in Atlanta. That was, that was weird. I'm all for teams doing whatever they need to do to improve and get better, but I felt like they kind of screwed him over there. Um, make he says, what are the chances Tyree kits to feel this year in a chief's uniform? I, who other than the chiefs like who are people predicting that Tyree kill will go to? Not saying these predictions are always right, but it's just like, what other situation makes sense for Tyree kill? And I know he tweeted earlier this week, we went over this on Monday's podcast that he says the time to get off the couch and go to work. He also tweeted today, you know, he's ready for cold weather.
Cold weather after spending all the, all this time in vice city. Yeah, we'll see. Uh, Bob says, Bowers is back. Yeah, Trey Tucker is playing well. Should be a great game this time. Yeah, certainly should be. Uh, blue shirt says, what kind of workload do you think worthy can get Sunday? I do have him on my fantasy and wondering if I should put him in my flex or keep him on my bench. Well, I'll give you my opinion on worthy now. In terms of fantasy football advice, I listen, I appreciate your guys comments and questions, but I'll say what I always say, do not ask me advice for fantasy football. I, I know nothing about fantasy football. I don't like it. I'm not a big fan. I played it for a little bit. Just wasn't out my thing. But hopefully with, um, with my breakdown today, maybe you'll get your answer and you'll know what to do with your fantasy football team. Uh, D line has to do a good, a better job and get past rush. Yes, 100%. Uh, I see the Raiders as being a dangerously team. Kobe, Ak has them believing. Absolutely. Um, Kobe, Ak is as someone that's, that's certainly got them in the, in the right mindset and
the right direction. Tyree going to Denver. You saw Tyree go, you see Tyree going to Denver. I don't think. I mean, I could see it. I think that's what you meant to say. Uh, standard is from your hometown of Montana. Yeah. Awesome. Awesome guy. Very cool. Uh, cousins is decent, uh, a decent person, hard to say anything negative about it. Yeah, especially when you watch that quarterback series. And again, as a chief fan, I watched it for Patrick Mahomes, obviously, but, uh, I came away with that relating more to him than I did. Mahomes and again, this is not anything against my homes. Mahomes lives a luxurious and lavish lifestyle. That guy flies privately. He's got bodyguards. Like he doesn't, it's almost like he doesn't put on his shoes the same way as I do. I mean, he does, but you get what I'm trying to say there. Like his lifestyle, the way he goes out and about is very different.
Her cousins, he's literally walking his dog with his wife in the neighborhood they live in. All in that Netflix series. And his wife said, hey, we get our clothes from Target. Like, okay, I think a lot of people can relate to that. A lot of people shop at Target. So, um, in less than again, Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, they earned what they have. But I am seeing Brittany whenever she's promoting something, it's, it's, uh, it's an expensive product. I mean, I don't know who's all buying them, but she's getting paid for those good for her. That's what you're supposed to do. Um, it's just not relatable to me. Whereas it is with, um, with, uh, Kirk cousins and, uh, just his family. When am I leaving to go to Las Vegas? It will be this weekend. Yes, I'll be flying out this weekend. And I got my tickets for the cheese raiders game in Viva Las Vegas. Thanks to my friends over at Seekig. Do not forget my promo code Farzine at checkout to save 20 dollars when you purchase your tickets. All right, let's read a few more comments before we break down this game here. KUBIK has changed his play calling tendencies. He is hard to scheme against because his play calling has been top notch.
I played a big hand in what they did last year for sure with Seattle. Yeah, playing baseball, yeah. That was nice to see. I don't know the backstory to that. What that was all about if that was a team or if that's just him, hey, let's just go play in the rain regardless. But that was cool to see. Maybe he wants to be with Waddle again, possibly. I thought about reuniting with Mike McDaniel in LA, but I don't think he's going to an Owen 3 team. And I guess, you know, reuniting with McDaniel is not something that was ever in the cards to begin with, but you never know. So we will see. All right, let's get into this game. You guys have all been waiting for this. I told you guys earlier this week, I'm picking the chiefs to win. And I do think it's going to be a close game. I don't think it's going to be high scoring. I've seen some of the predictions out there. I don't think this is going to be high scoring like a lot of people anticipate, but I do think the chiefs will win. This will be on CBS. Now, if you're wondering whether or not you will get this game,
I will show you here on the map. If I can pull that up here on my end, yes, there it is right here. So there is the viewing map for this game. If you are anywhere on the East Coast, you are basically getting this game. Now, this is where things start to get a little tricky. And we got some complaints here. Dallas Fort Worth area. You're getting Denver versus San Francisco. Same with Minnesota, Wisconsin, most of Michigan, the Chicago area also getting the Denver 49ers game, as well as most of the mountainous region, as well as a majority of California. And then the green, that is Chargers Seahawks. So you can see the appropriate coverage there, parts of Arizona, Southern California, and then the majority of that Northwest region there,
with most of Oregon, parts of Idaho and Montana, and obviously all of Washington, going to be dialed in on that game. So that's the coverage map for you. It can change. At some point during the week, I'll update you if anything does change, but hopefully you're on the East Coast because that is a guarantee you will be getting chiefs raiders and a lot of people are going to be keeping an eye on this game. And we know that because this is going to be announced by Jim Nance and JJ Wat. It's so weird to not say Jim Nance and Tony Romo, Tony Romo, not released yet. This is, this is JJ Wat temporarily filling in for now. We don't know what Tony Romo's long term future looks like. By the way, let me address this real quickly here. Mickey says, am I going to do a live show? If yes, where it will be in my hotel room? No, you guys are not invited. You guys are not invited. Now, I will say this, although a pregame live chat, there will not be a half time live show because I'll be at the game. There will be a post game podcast. I don't know when.
I mean, I'm going to be escaping the arrowhead. I'm not arrowhead. A legend traffic, the Vegas traffic, just like everyone else that'll be trying to leave. So I do not know when the podcast will begin. But as soon as I get into my hotel room, we will start. So just stick around social media. Make sure you have notifications turned on, especially on YouTube, because it will notify you when we go live. So make sure you've got that locked in ready. That way you'll know when we go live, because it is going to be more sudden. Whereas normally we go live as soon as the game ends. Referee for this game is Brad Rogers. The last time he did a chiefs game was the chiefs Jags game on Monday Night Football last year. The chiefs opened up as five and a five and a half point betting favorites. That has now dropped dropped to four and a half. There are minus 225 money line favorites, whereas the Raiders are plus 185 underdogs. The over under for this one is 47 and a half.
I told you guys, I don't think it's going to be a big shoot. I like some people. Thanks. I am taking the under on this one injury report. I mentioned the Josh Simmons situation already. He did not practice obviously. And a serious need was limited today due to a knee injury. Clint Kubiak, you guys have already mentioned. Of course he's the head coach. Son of former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak. Of course was the Seahawks offensive coordinator last year. That led to the Seahawks winning the Super Bowl. The Saints year before was the offensive coordinator for them. Also has been with the 49ers twice with the Vikings twice with the Broncos. He was also the wide receivers coach for KU back in 2015. So former Kansas J. Hawks wide receivers coach now getting his first head coaching gig with the Las Vegas Raiders. Let's go to the Raiders offense, which is coordinated by Andrew Janico, who was the quarterbacks coach for the Seahawks last year. Also was the quarterbacks coach for the Saints the year before. You notice the pattern there. Janico and Kubiak, they've been together the last two years in New Orleans and Seattle
and now in Vegas. So they've spent time together many, many times, including even in Minnesota, where Janico was there from 2015 to 2021 coaching offensive line wide receivers and quarterbacks. And eventually now in his first gig as an offensive coordinator. Raiders offense rank 19th, rushing the ranked 19th exactly 100. Brushing Arts per game on average. There are 16th exactly middle of the pack passing the football. They are seventh in point scored per game scoring just over 29 points a game. They have the 14th best third down conversion rate at 41%. Remember Casey allowed eight of 16 third down conversions last week against Adolfins. That was not good. Fourth down the Raiders ranked 10th. They've converted 66% of the time. Small sample size two of three conversions. Casey's offense also has a 66% success rate, but more sample size there. Four of six.
So take that for what you will. Red zone, the Raiders ranked 14th, scoring a touch on 61% of their red zone trips. Carcazza mentioned their quarterback, former Redskins, Vikings, Falcons, Kubi. He's got the record for most game winning drives and fourth quarter comebacks in a season with eight did that in 2022 tying Matthew Stafford's record from 2016. If you're wondering what his stats are for the season 661 passing yards, nine touchdown passes. That is tied for the most with Brock Purdy. He threw two picks in week one against Miami. One in week two against the Chargers was sack twice in that game. Did not turn the ball over once as yet to fumble the football this year. He's thrown three touchdown passes in every game. That's how we earned his nine touchdowns on the season. He was 22 of 33. Most completions so far in a game this year for 248 yards was sack three times though. Did not get sacked in week one, sack twice in week two and was sack three times last
week against the Saints. The running back Ash and Gentie, the sixth overall selection from last year at a Boise state. He has 10th in rushing yards this year with 206 yards. However, he has the sixth most attempts with 63. He's actually right behind K9 who is tied forth with Jummier Gibbs at 65. He's averaging 3.3 yards per carry though. That's not good. No touchdowns, no runs of 20 yards or more, no big runs. He has nine first down pickups on the season. So I'm really curious with the chiefs being as successful as they have been against the run, not allowing a lot of 100 yard rushers and games. They allowed to last year and then one the year before and that year was Lamar Jackson who did it. So we'll see if the chiefs can do a good job of keeping Ash and Gentie in check because if they do, that will force second and long and third along situations. But I also recognize that the Raiders are going to be studying Kansas City's woes in stopping
the run and trying to see if the Raiders can use that to their advantage. So this will be very interesting to see what kind of a game Ash and Gentie will have. He ran for 102 yards in week one against Miami. 104 yards in the last two games combined, averaging less than three yards of carry in the last two weeks. By the way, you guys in the chat, comment below with your score predictions because I will read those once I'm done here. Wide receiver Troy Tucker been around for a little bit there in Vegas and he is done a really good job this season. 11 catches for 189 yards. Five of those catches and 119 of those yards and that one touch on. He's got this year came against the chargers. He was targeted four times against the Saints last week and he caught all four of those passes. Four 43 yards. Their next best wide receiver is Jalen Nailer, Las Vegas native, also a former Viking. He's got five catches for 52 yards so they don't get a lot of activity from their wide
receivers. You know where that comes from though. Their tie dance Michael Mayer got to talk about him because he filled in for Brock Bauer is the first two games. 12 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown score against New Orleans and then Brock Bauer's who had a minor knee injury. It was a meniscus. He came back last Sunday against the Saints. Oh boy. 10 catches. He had a hard in 16 yards and a touchdown. Last year he had 64 catches for 680 yards and seven touchdowns and I'm playing the whole year and then his rookie year two years ago. He had 112 catches for nearly 1200 receiving yards leading the NFL and both categories among tight dance as a rookie. And he had five touchdown grabs that year. The Raiders employ a great two tight end set. And Kansas got to be ready for it. There's also Derek Young, one of their special teams returners who came from Seattle to be a part of this Vegas offense. So that's even though he hasn't done much offensively, that's a guy you can never discredit
given his speed and what he can do for the Raiders. Now let's talk about the offensive line. Colton Miller very good. That's who George Carloft is. This is going to be facing a lot in this game. But their left guard Spencer Burford. He struggled this year. He has allowed six pressure. He allowed six pressures last week. He has allowed 12 on the season Tyler Lindembaum. Their center hasn't been it has been good against the past, but not so good with his run blocking right guard Austin powers Johnson and looking at the injury report. He did not practice today due to a groin injury. The other person who did not practice was a backup QB aid in no conno, but that was for personal reasons. So the only person that did not practice due to an injury was Jackson powers Austin. And you got to wonder what's going to come out of that. That's something we'll have to monitor and keep an eye on because if and as much as he struggled with trying to stop the run or I'm sorry trying to help with the run, that's
something that Kansas City will definitely try to exploit anyway going up against him. So keep an eye on that. We'll see how that goes. And then their right tackle DJ Glaze. Run blocking has been an issue for him. Colder Miller's a great left tackle, but man that run blocking throughout that offensive line just hasn't been very good. By the way, one important thing to note Spencer Burford is tied for most pressures allowed by an offensive guard this season. So Eric Hicks mentioned earlier in the clip we played Peter Woods, Chris Jones, I'll throw in Kyrie Stongas name in there. They've got to play they've got to step it up because this is a chance for them to really get in the pocket and disrupt the run, disrupt car cousins reads and all of that. They've got to do that in this game. And I think Spencer Burford is going to be their key to possibly doing that because that
interior offensive line has weaknesses. And that's how Kansas City can keep action, genty and check and they can try to prevent car cousins from having another three touchdown game. So that is the Raiders offense in a nutshell. Let's go to the Raiders defense coordinator by Rob Leonard, who was the Raiders defense of line coach promoted to defensive coordinator, former dolphins Ravens and giants assistant. The Raiders defense that's really been their strength so far this year. 11th and total defense. 19th in trying to stop the run. They're allowing 116 yards per game. They're 22nd and yards allowed per attempt with four and a half. That's huge. That needs to be noted. Their 10th against the past. They're 28th and points allowed. That's not good. Third down defense ranks 18th, fourth down defense ranks first, a 0 of two fourth down conversions
allowed and their red zone defense ranks 27th near the bottom, allowing a touchdown on red zone trips 78% of the time. Now, some areas where they really do excel, they are plus nine in the turnover ratio. That is the best in the NFL. The second closest is Carolina plus seven. They've got four interceptions that is tied for most and they've got five fumble recoveries, which is the most also 10 force fumbles also the most no surprise there. They had three force fumbles and got four takeaways against the Saints last week. Now they are tied fifth in defensive penalty so far this year with 24. So that is something that could work out for Kansas City in this game. Obviously, the Raiders defense starts and ends with Max Crosby. He has fifth in the NFL and pressures with 17, one and a half sacks so far on the season. All of them came in week one. Malcolm Coons, another great player on that defensive line. Many first in pressures with 11, two and a half sacks for him.
Another defensive lineman pay has a sack and a half. Nikobe Dean, one of the better linebackers in the league, also has a one and a half sacks on the season outside of Crosby though. And I brought this up earlier, the Raiders defensive front does struggle against the run. And you look at some of their defensive tackles, Foley, Fato Cassie and also Tonka Hemingway. Those guys are going to be going up against Creed Humpfri and Trace Smith more times than not. And I think that's the area where Kansas City is going to try to attack the most to get K9 going. A lot of K9's big runs have come to the outside. We haven't seen too much of K9 between the tackles. And I'm curious to see if this is the game where that changes. Try to say it away from Max Crosby, go opposite of him and see what you can do against this Raiders defensive line that in general has not been very good against the run outside of Crosby. I mentioned to Kobe Dean 27 tackles for him, three and a half tackles for a loss and three force fumbles. One of the league leaders in that category, safety Jeremy Chen, he's got the most force
fumbles this year among safeties with two. Also as a sack of good cover safety. We got to talk about their, their rookie fifth round pick, Ezekia masses. What a season he's having. He's the early front runner for defensive rookie of the year. Three picks. That's the second most and he's got 67 yards returned from interceptions. That's also third most. Sorry, second most on interceptions, third most and interception return yards. He's got four pass deflections now. As good as those numbers are, he has had his moments struggling and coverage. So that's something to keep an eye on in this game. Terran Johnson, former Buffalo Bill, solid, nickel cornerback, one of the better nickel cornerbacks in the NFL. This is where the chiefs can really exploit things from the Raiders and their secondary. Because, and I've seen Raiders fans complain about this on social media, there are two guys in their secondary that Kansas City can absolutely take advantage of and exploit here.
Let's start with their cornerback, Eric Stokes. He wears number five. So be aware of that when you watch this game. These allow 10 catches on 17 targets for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterbacks have a passer rating of 118 when they throw an Eric Stokes direction. Isaiah Polamau, he's allowed seven catches for 90 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterbacks have a passer rating of 153. That is damn near perfect. Polamau wears number 20. So if there are two guys that Patrick Mahomes needs to target and pick on the most, it's the cornerback number five and the safety number 20. If Patrick Mahomes can do that, I think Kansas City's pass game will be good. Now in order to do that, you've got to block Max Crosby and Malcolm Coons. Don't let them win and get around the edge.
Because if they do that, then Patrick Mahomes is not going to be able to pick on Polamau and Stokes in this game. That to me, I think is the big secret key for the chiefs to beat the Raiders. Those things right there, the blocking, it's going to come down to that. And I know that with the chiefs, Calil Benson's allowed three pressures in every game so far this year. And they'll probably face Max Crosby often at the line of scrimmage. It's going to be him as well as Malcolm Coons, Quitty Pay. I mean, you've got some guys and pay is a first round draft from 2021 out of Michigan. So there are some guys to just be aware of with this defensive end position group for the Raiders. And listen, we know Crosby's elite, no question about it. Gentlemen Moore's done a good job this year.
And the chiefs have been able to mask some of his struggles by utilizing the quick pass. But Benson hasn't necessarily been the most consistent with his past blocking. So that is something that I'm curious to see if the chiefs are the Raiders match Max Crosby up against Benson. And if they do, man, can't say they better have a chip block already because Benson could use that help kind of like what they do it did with Derek McKinnon in the 2020 2022 postseason. That is absolutely necessary in this game. Raiders special team coached by Joe DiCamilles. First year with the Raiders was the special teams coordinator at South Carolina last year. Also been the former special teams coordinator for the Rams in 2021 to 2022. Also the Jags Broncos and Cowboy special teams coordinator in the past. Their kicker is Matt Gag. He has six of six on the season. He made a 59 yarder against the chargers. AJ Cole is their punter. He is number one in average punning and net average punning.
So obviously you're doing a great job for them this year and their kicker turner running back Dylan Loeb and also a wide receiver Derek Young. I mentioned Young coming over from Seattle. They handle the kicker turn duties and their punter turner Malik Benson. He is ninth in punter turn yard so far this season with 64 off for punter turns. All right. I said I want to hear your guys score predictions. Let me see if you guys have been commenting with that. If you haven't already comment below with your score prediction because I will read those very, very soon. I don't think there's going to be a big high scoring game. I think Kansas. He will do some good things on offense, especially with the run game. I think the Raiders will as well. But I think Kansas City can find ways to stop action genty. I believe that. I know they struggling against the run the last couple of games, but they have found ways to improve in the second half. And that I think is where things can be a turning point. The most important thing is take advantage of the weakness that the Raiders have with the
middle of their defense, which is run the damn ball down their throat in the middle. Just keep it away from Max Crosby's direction. That's the most important thing. You're allowed to not go in Max Crosby's area. That's what you're supposed to do. And I do expect the chiefs to do that. And I think if you do that, you'll control time of possession, you'll control the game. And I think more importantly, that will allow the chiefs to open up the past game. Something we've talked about all off season. That will wear out the Raiders defense. And I think that is where my homes will pick on the safety pull of Mau and the cornerback stokes. You do that in this game. You're winning. I don't have it being a high scoring game. I'm going 20 to 17 Kansas City to win. I think the Raiders are going to push the chiefs to the limit. I think they'll get to my homes. I think the chiefs will get to Carcassans in this game.
It's going to come down to which offense can step up and make the fewest mistakes in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter. So 2017 Kansas City is my pick to go for now going into the by week. Jeff says 31, 24. Jennifer also says 2017. Great minds think alike. 24, 21 from Bob 34, 17 from Lewis. Kyle is going 30 to 24. Okay. I'm not I'm not going to be score so far. 27, 17, 30, 23, 24, 17, 30, 24, 24, 21. Buckerbiss is an extra point. Okay. We're predicting that now as well. Seems like we're all in unison that the chiefs will win this game. Scores are kind of all over the place, which is interesting, but I do think the chiefs will capitalize on some of the weaknesses that the Raiders have, which is the middle of that defensive line on also that secondary. And I think there are offensive line, which has not been great run blocking. They'll force a lot of second along and third along situations.
And with Kansas City, how good they've been and man coverage this year, I think they'll find ways to limit Kirk Cousins and not allow him to go off for another three touchdown performance. All right. That's it. That was my prediction. Hey, huge thanks to all the the chiefs alums that we had. We had interviewed this week and put plate down some of those clips on the podcast.
