No, usually don't. Listen, you guys. This is a special episode of Down-Dunk. Mirror host Amherst like with the Alex Spears. We just thought we'd hop on here for a quick pod to discuss the findings from this Clippersphere Asuka one that ESPN reported not that long ago is, oh, nothing's gonna happen. And in fact, something does happen. Steve Balmer is gonna choose his punishment. He's gonna choose his own punishment. We gotta wait. We gotta wait to find out what he's willing to take as far as punishment goes.

4:04All those reports were just so strange. And so incredibly wrong. So we got the Nizis afternoon. I'm like picking up my kids. It's just, you know, it's September 2nd. You're just living your life. And I was actually on the phone with somebody. And the news drops. I was like, did you see what just happened? It's like, what? Wait, what do you mean? It's like, yeah. Clippers are gonna lose five first round picks. 30 million dollar fine to Steve Balmer, which we know is nothing. But in the grand scheme of the world, there's a lot of dollars. Suspensions for Balmer, Lawrence Frank and Jillian Zooker, I guess is how it's pronounced. Quite gets fined. 700,000 dollars in rest of the, I guess it's 700,000 dollars in restitution. And then Uncle Dennis is gone. He's already been fired, but he's never coming back.

5:06You'll see it's only five years. It's only pretty good agent. Listen, got his guy a lot of money. You did get him a lot of money. And all you had, if you were to tell me I could get you 50 million dollars. And all you had to do is pay 700,000 on the back end, which you do it. Maybe you do it. This is a, this is a crazy deal that obviously does affect the thunder with thunder. I mean, I think I think I'm going to have to be careful with it. But I think that's one thing I think is that the cliff is unprotected pick swap. And this next draft. But also I see a lot of people kind of framing it as the Paul George, co-I-linear. You know, a deal is now up to 10 first round picks and that it's cost them, which is just a hilarious. But yeah, what, what what hit your brain whenever you saw this? This kind of feels like a bird night. This is a bird's are involved. I am wearing a shirt with a bird on it. Yeah, you are. I was looking at the draft picks like a mock drafts for 2027 to see if anyone has any bird names.

6:10Because you know, in a few months, lottery nights closer than we think, folks. Okay, it's really not. It's actually a far away. But when lottery night hits, that could be a lot of fun. Now, the clippers have let us down before in very similar instances. But they also have given us some pretty nice picks in the in the late lottery. And Andrew has gone. So, you know, for the thunder specifically, I this, this was great news to hear because I was a little worried that nothing was going to happen. And why was going to stay there? And what if he's healthy again? And they're just like a perfectly normal. I think this really opens the door for some soul searching on the clippers part. It's like, what's the even the point? What are we doing? Like that Zubat's deal, great deal. That got them to first.

7:11They should just keep trying to do more deals like that. Like build up the various Garland's value, get some picks. Try to figure out something because the team has currently constructed is going nowhere. And I think you need, even though you don't have any picks, like you have to reset this somehow. And I realize that they are in the process of doing that. But this is like such a death now to a franchise. And I just, if they just kind of play this out for this next half decade, as is with no picks coming in just like hoping that they like land a free agent here or there. But if you're a free agent, like a big time free agent, why would you go to the clippers? The team that has zero assets to make any future deals. They won't. They won't. And one thing they won't go to the clippers. And I'm super interested in, so their picks that they can't use anymore or they're going to be vanished. They're going to be disappeared.

8:1129 through 33. Does that mean that they can't trade 34 because of the Steppian role? That's a great question. And so does that mean that their first pick they could trade, which they can't now, but whenever the it lines up 35 will be 35, which still you have to, is it like seven years out that you can trade a pick? 2035. My son will be 23 years old when the clippers can trade a pick again. Now, on the other hand, we saw with the Joe Smith deal that they initially penalized them five and then they eventually gave a couple back. Much worse than the Joe Smith deal. This is much worse than the Joe Smith deal. The fact that they found like if you go, you can go read the report. You can go read it. It's out there. It's public knowledge. And it's like, this is really bad. And they also end like the summer in their port with like, we have all these findings. All these things happen. We know all these things happened.

9:12And we think there could be more. Well, it ends. Yeah, I want to say like highly recommend. If you're just an MBA fan, everyone's been following this saga. I mean, so one of my first thoughts was like, man, I remember being at summer league last summer and finding out that the athletic was about to bring on Pablo. Yeah. And like thinking it was cool, you know, I've seen a couple of like Pablo shows at that point. Yeah. And realizing that like his first episode for the athletic was going to be this dude. I yeah, that it was this time of year. Yeah. And I remember getting a call from my boss was like, hey, we're going to. I'm going to send you this episode of Pablo show. And like you can't want to get tell anybody about this. You can't tell anybody this is about to happen. But also like this could this is like a really, really, really big deal. And it was I remember watching it with just like my eyes were just like getting wider and wider. Just like what is about to happen.

10:14And it just took a long time for it to happen. But getting back to this report, highly recommend reading it. It's a quick read. It's 36 pages, but it like flies. It's fun. It's a it's a genuinely fun read. And did there's a there's a the another business that I'm so I'm really sad that. That that Pablo didn't get a hold of this business from the beginning was boy and go wireless. Boingo. Yeah, we didn't get enough. Boy and go. Yeah, we needed a lot of. I mean, could you can you imagine for the last year we could have been talking. Boy and go. Yeah, I think that would have. Honestly though, that might have like turned the story into a farce. Where people just wouldn't have taken it seriously because everyone would just been so focused on. Boy and go. See saying, boy and go. But this report. The thing I think is so interesting about all this is that for a year now, all to talk about the detractors from the detractors, people who are doubting Pablo's reporting. Oh, and there were a lot of them.

11:14And there were a lot. It was where's the smoking gun? Where's the proof that Steve Balmer directly funneled money. And then you get that ESPN report. The subject of which is there's no evidence that Balmer directly funneled money to Kauai. They were very careful in their language of what they were using. And what you learn in this report is that that whole framing of this issue is kind of a side story. Like they do provide circumstantial evidence in this report that yeah, we do think that they were like funneling money to these companies to pay Kauai. But they don't provide a smoking gun for that. The majority of that report is about how they were directly involved in all of these deals, which clearly goes against all of the rules. Which I'll be honest, I didn't realize how big of a deal that aspect of it was. Because I've been so focused on just like, well, Kauai wanted 50 million that he lost from not resigning with Toronto.

12:17And they gave 48 to aspiration. And it's all the money's lining up. But really what they got knocked for was for initiating all of these relationships with Kauai and the sponsors. That's what that entire report is about. And they have damning evidence on that. Yeah. They have evidence that the what was the miss Zooker? Zooker. Yeah. Is the one reaching out to aspirations saying, hey, you should think you should consider doing something with Kauai. In fact, I'll set you up with a business agent to help you draft up a term sheet. Let me review it. I'll give you some advice on it. Then I'll reach out to Kauai because here's the thing you are allowed to do. If aspiration comes to the Clippers and say, hey, we're interested in doing a deal with Kauai, the team is allowed to give the contact information for that player to the sponsor. Okay. But then at that point, they're out. What they're not allowed to do is reach out to a sponsor on their own and ask them to do a deal with the player.

13:20Or if a player asks the team, hey, will you set us up a deal with aspiration? They can't do that. And there were numerous examples of them doing both of those things with Kauai and various sponsors throughout this report. And you could, and they have evidence that they were trying to cover their tracks. Like in a lot of these quote unquote introductory emails, they were trying to make it seem like the sponsor was the one who reached out first. And this was just an introductory, oh, here's Kauai's and Dennis's contact information. You guys have fun. They tried to make it seem that way, but they had all of this evidence leading up to those introductory emails that the Clippers were the ones pulling the strings the entire time. And that's actually what got them this huge fine. And that's what's so crazy because as they bring up multiple points during that report, there's still stuff coming out. Yeah. There was a great little nugget that I posted on Blue Sky of like where they had an insider source.

14:25Because what was happening with a lot of these sponsors is that once they would do a deal with Kauai, they would then sign a consulting agreement with the Clippers. And they talked to some of the employees who are like, these, it didn't make any sense because the consulting that we do is part of what we offer already. It's not something that we would charge in addition to our services. Like think about Dectronics. Like they wouldn't charge them a consulting charge on top of what they're going to charge them for just building the thing. Like it's all involved in it. Yeah. And they had someone in one of these companies, which I assume is Dectronics, because it did seem going through it like Dectronics provided them with the most information. Yeah. They did mention like which of these sponsors were both forthcoming with information. Yeah. But Bongo not so much, which is. Bongo not so much. Maybe that's why we don't know that much about Bongo. But they had this little section where they're saying like this person brought up that these consult, these consulting agreements were like a total sham.

15:30And everyone knew it was a sham and it was clearly a way to funnel money to Kauai. This was introduced to us just a week before we wrote up this report. And therefore we are still gathering information on it. Like there's multiple points in the report where they basically say like there's more stuff. There's stuff coming in within the last week. But we had we had felt we had enough to put a report out now, but there's going to be more. This is just so wild. This is just absolutely. But Nana's that this is happening. And like the ripple effect that is good that it's going to have across the NBA too. Like there, like I'm sure teams have introduced players to sponsorship deals or it's just sponsors, you know. And like teams are going to have to be I think this is a good thing because teams are have to be way more buttoned up about everything. Yeah. And like I know for a lot of this year, the detractors would say like who cares like the clippers.

16:34Like they got no benefit from any of this really they got one conference finals appearance. It was because of Paul George. That's like quite even play. But the whole thing is like, okay, yeah, but what if they had won a championship? Yeah. What if what if I mean because going into that first season, I'm pretty sure they were like title favorites or like second favorites. I mean that team was insane. I mean, I was talking with my oldest son about it this afternoon. It's like that clippers team like they were absolutely stacked. And I mean, they had a lot of missteps along the way. But I was like, why it just like he just won the title. You know, and like now you get. And some of it was the pandemic, you know, was like, yeah, and the fact that they didn't want to like when they got to the bubble, they were just like, no, we're not doing this. But they have like, Kauai Paul George, Marcus Morris, Lou Williams, Montreas, Harold, Shamant, Pat Bev.

17:41So they were two bots. This is coming off, as you mentioned, the Raptors championship. They had the best odds in the NBA to win the championship plus 425 Lakers were second at plus 450 bucks were plus 550. They're over under going into that season was 53 and a half. That was only behind the bucks 57 and a half, six or 54 and a half and Houston 54. Like they were the title favorite going into that season. If they if that had come to fruition and then you had something like this, I mean, it would be the biggest story in the NBA in our lifetimes. As it is, it's still one of the biggest stories in the NBA in our lifetime. But I think that they, I'm saying all that to say that like they had to make a statement with this. Because if you do let it go eventually, there will be a team that is successful and does this. And if if you set a precedent that you're just going to give a slap on the wrist to the clippers in the future when it's, you know, team X who does this and they actually benefit from it and win championships.

18:50Then it becomes a just like a much more difficult issue to deal with. Yeah, I also think that okay, maybe like versions of this are going on around the league. But the entire point of the most recent CBA was so that these rich owners didn't have to spend more money. I don't think they liked this. I don't think they liked the idea that there was an owner out there who was potentially funneling tens of millions of dollars to players outside of the cap to try and taste them to come to their team or to stay with their team. I don't think I firmly believe that the added silver was confident enough to do a ruling this strongly because he had the owners on his side. And I think that the 700,000 to Kauai while it seems low, I think that was deliberate to get the players association off their back. Because I think if it would if they hit Kauai hard, the players association would have done something.

19:52And I have a feeling they're not going to do anything because he's going to be able to play this year. He's going to be playing on a new team. It's going to be a few hours. Yeah, that's how much money. If you had both Balmer and the players association coming against the league, like maybe that becomes more difficult to deal with. But as it is, it seems like it's just Balmer and by all reports, like all the teams agreed to when something like this happens and the NBA makes a ruling, it's final. Yeah, they can. There's not an option for arbitration. Yeah, there's not. His so wild, like all the SPN stuff to the fact that Balmer had them in his back pocket this whole time. From the jump. Dude, he went on national television and spoke to Ramona Shelburn who then like continuously throughout this whole process. ESPN has been like on the side of like, well, we don't really think anything's going to happen here. I mean, like the guy has that much power where he can like sway reporting from the biggest sports news entity on the planet.

20:59Like that's like that's the kind of like money power this guy has is that. And ESPN looks so bad today because of it. And I think specifically like Baxter Holmes and Don Van Nade, Van Nade, Jr. Because those two guys have been on the bylines for like a lot of important sports stories over the years. Yeah, I mean Baxter Holmes reporting with the Phoenix Sons was like a big deal. Mm-hmm. Basically got Sarver out of there. Yeah, as part of his reporting. Yeah. And to attach your name to that article, which like if you want to look in the most generous light, it's like, well technically the main thrust of that article was correct. Because as I talked about like the report, the walk down report is more about how the clippers initiated all of these sponsor, quiet relationships. But you look back at that report now for me, ESPN. And it's clearly like they were just trying to create a narrative to deflect blame from Steve Balmer.

22:08They were they were offering you like a very small sliver of the overall story, just trying to off you scape everything else that was going on. And then you read the full story. And it's like you didn't think any of this was worth mentioning. And I think the part that is so important to understand, which they bring up at the beginning of the walk tell report, is the clippers specific history involved here. Yeah. Going back to 2015 with the Andre Jordan, which was a very similar scenario of them introducing him to a sponsor. Then going through 2019 when co-I first came to LA and Uncle Dennis was asking a bunch of teams for stuff. And the raptors reported it, the Lakers reported it, the clippers reported it. And then the NBA came in doing investigation because he did eventually sign there. And as part of that, they came up with these rules. They came up with the rules that the clippers would eventually break. And they provided specific training to the clippers.

25:17And then they went ahead and did it. To me that just strengthened the whole case that Wachtell was presenting because they were showing that this was a repeat offense. And they specifically designed rules after 2019 so that there wouldn't be any guesswork again. So you know exactly what you can and cannot do. Yeah. Well, Adam Silver, who by the way, like, Skeets put him on the pressure draft and he must have listened. He did. That's right. That was the tipping point for silver. But they handed him this report and the NBA decided what to do with it. Yeah. And they decided this is the worst case of cap circumvention that we've ever had in the history of the league. And it needs to stop now. And we are going to essentially give the clippers the death penalty when it comes to team building. Like they have, I mean, being stripped of five first rounders is insane.

26:22So between now and 2033, the clippers have a 2027 pick swap, which will be Denver. I think it's like the worst of Denver, OK, see Toronto. And then a 29 pick swap. A with Philadelphia. 2031 via the Raptors and 2033 via the Raptors. If that trade doesn't need go through. And that's it between now and 2033. I mean, it's, it is, it is really bad for them. And I don't know how you recover from this. I mean, they need somebody that's on the roster right now to become a superstar in the league. Or they need to, like you said earlier, trade all their guys for draft picks. Because they have essentially no way to build a team. And do you think that any agent outside of maybe Jonathan Caminga's agent is going to steer their client to the clippers?

27:22Yeah, they're going to get a lot of players like Caminga. I just can't imagine. I mean, listen, they're in LA. They have a great stadium like by all accounts like a very good franchise to play for sure. So maybe they'll be able to grab a guy here there. I'm just thinking like for the top of the top guys, which to be honest, they don't really come. They don't really become free agents. Yeah, you have to trade for them anyways. And as we mentioned, the clippers assets are pretty limited right now. Yeah. Yeah. So I think they'll get some of those like C tier guys. Maybe they get like occasional B tier. It's going to be. They're they're they're littered with those guys right now. Like a bunch of guys that like really aren't going to deliver much for you. They really need wuggler to hit. They need wuggler. They got so lucky getting that pick too. Considering everything that's happened now.

28:23Yes, because like they're not going to get that other the 29 pick. Yeah, the 29 Indiana pick is just evaporated. Go on. Yeah. Yeah, it's they got they got so lucky. I know did just have some honestly. What they did the past year. Yeah, kind of is what you would do if you thought this was going to happen. Yeah, also firing Lawrence Frank is something that you would do. If you knew that all this is going to happen to you. Didn't they give him an extension? I thought they fought. I mean, didn't they let him go? Oh, did they really? Yeah. They let him go in the middle of the season. Oh, okay. I mean, there was no, he's still on their team, right? I didn't think so. Because he got suspended for six months. As part of this deal. Am I am I losing my mind?

29:23Google AI is sending me to kfoward.com for this. No way. Okay, see, local news is on this. They're on it. No way. I think he's still there. But yeah, I don't know what they should do. I mean, the only good things I've heard. I saw a clippers fan post. They need to immediately like lower season ticket prices, lower concession prices. Like they have to do something for the fans. Yeah. Because I mean, I was about to say going back literally for all time. Gotta be one of the worst fan experiences in the NBA. I mean, it's them. It's them in the Kings. And the Kings have been incompetent.

30:23The clippers have just been awful in new ways. They have like, they're coming up with new ways to be awful. Yeah, I can't not imagine what I mean, you got to go find another team. Yeah, I saw some people, some clippers fans saying that they were done. You absolutely have to go find another team. 33:25As he's going to land very hard. You know, maybe that's what I'm thinking of. Yeah, he got. Yeah, he got an extension, which was seen as like a way to soften the blow almost like a gift to him. I mean, maybe that's why I thought of it. It's like a firing or a departure because it was like, we know things are going to get really bad. And so we're just going to just float you a boatload of money because we know that you did a lot of this for us. He was the executive of the year in 2020. Okay, so a lot of people have talked about these picks. They're going to be gone. So as of now, pre-expansion, there would be 29 first round picks instead of 30. I'm sure you've heard some ideas of what they should do about it because some people don't like the idea that like, you know, you're. It's a salary. It's a salary slot that would exist. And one college player is just who would have been a first round pick.

34:27Yeah. Keith Smith suggested giving a first round, the 30th pick to the in-season tournament winner. Here's my idea, Andrew. Yeah, that's not going to happen. Teams can bid on it. And it's also called the NBA Cup. Respect the cup, please. Sorry. I believe I got that wording directly from whatever post I saw. Well, but I apologize. Respect the cup. What if teams could bid on the 30th pick? And the obvious outcome here is that Balmer would just pay for the 30th pick every year. And we could just take more of his money. And we know that they wouldn't draft anybody good because they've had a late first every year. And have never drafted anyone good. Maybe Yonic Neeter House or maybe he's going to break the mold. Yeah. But we can just take more money from Steve Balm. That would be really funny. And other owners can drive up the price. So that he's paying like eight million. Yeah, the 30th pick in the draft. And all the money. Hey, all the money goes to charity.

Maybe it's maybe it is bad, but I'm looking at the heights for all these guys currently projecting the lottery. Yeah, seeing a lot of six seven through six nine. You know what? That's what they need. They could use a player like that. And watch them take Jordan Smith, Jr. out of Arkansas, six foot two, 200 pounds. I think was that Derek Parker that just posted a video on him?

38:29I haven't watched it yet, but yeah, D.P. is already already rolling. Yes. But yeah, this will be, I mean, obviously this will be fascinating. The center of three first round picks. This next draft. I just, I just have a feeling that thunder are going to be changing things up. You know, in the coming year, because I just, what are you going to do with three first round picks? Yeah, I mean, that's why it's so important to find out what you've got from these four young guys. It is important. You've got to, yeah, they need to show some some shine, some shines, some signs of life, especially Topic, because he's going to cost a lot next year. Yeah, yeah, yeah, this option. 39:29As a Thunder fan, we have made the Clippers suffer so much and they're going to just suffer some more at the hand of Sam Brezdi and really at their own hand. The last thing, let's very last point. Winning a championship in Oklahoma City was always going to take a perfect storm of luck. Yeah. And it almost happened the first time and that perfect storm was those three drafts, those three consecutive drafts. And this time it was the union of Kwae Leonard and Steve Balmer. That's truly when you read through this report and you're just like kind of understanding both of these parties. It's like, this is a perfect. This was always going to end at an extreme. They were either going to be the team that everyone thought they were going to be and win a lot of championships or this was going to happen. And it truly was a perfect storm of luck for OKC. Yeah. I mean, the timing was perfect. The overly ambitious Steve Balmer, which like he was overly ambitious with that trade and then way overly ambitious with what he had to do to get Kwae under the table.

40:39It was the perfect storm because there's not many teams that would have given up all that they gave up to get PG totally in that moment. That was that is a. It is the worst trade ever in the history of the NBA and just like like a one time only like a Sam will probably never make a trade like that ever again. No, it's a saying it's equivalent to like the net Celtics trade where it's just like these ones in a generation trades. Yeah. Yeah, you just got to you in it. And again, with that situation, it was an owner that was just way over his keys on what he thought he could do. You know, and these guys that are like so rich and powerful, they just feel like they can just do whatever they want and create whatever they want. And that's what they tried to do in both those moments with the nets and with the clippers and it was a complete disaster because like when you're building a team in the NBA, it takes.
