Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots face early-season crossroads as Trevor Lawrence and Drake Maye battle to avoid a 1-2 start. Can Lawrence exploit New England’s banged-up secondary, or will Maye rebound after a rough outing and lead the Patriots to a vital road win? Depth issues, injury updates, and intriguing lineup changes set the stage for a matchup with major AFC playoff implications.

Nick Cattles and Tony Wiggins break down offensive line woes, key positional battles—like Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker against the Patriots’ patchwork O-line—and the chess match between Christian Gonzalez and Parker Washington. Special teams surprises, turnover margins, and strategic game flow take center stage, with both teams under pressure from tough division rivals ahead. Will the winner gain momentum, or will roster uncertainty dictate the outcome in this pivotal showdown?

I mean Nick, I'll tell you exactly what it is. I'm gonna tell you where we're going and where we're going to end up. Not necessarily a prediction, but maybe a game flow and how we believe the game will go and who will win and lose based on certain scenarios.

Then we'll talk about the winning formula and keys to victory. We match up, but we'll first get started with the big story lines. The big story line to me is to ascending quarterbacks, Drake May and Trevor Lawrence, both one and one. Both teams have had a good week, bad week for Jaguars, bad week, good week for New England. How do you think it's gonna go, Nick? I think it's gonna be a really, really good game here and I'm looking forward to it. Yeah, it's an interesting one, right? I mean, you got two coaches in their second year with their programs respectfully. You get two young quarterbacks playing. I think you got two good to really good defenses the way they've played the first couple of weeks. And I know everybody's looking at the quarterback position and I understand it's the low hanging fruit, right, as May watch in New England and what is Drake May going to do in Jacksonville after not playing great the first couple of weeks. I think the biggest story line, Tony in New England is injury. I think it's injury watch and Mike Vrable during the preseason, he came out and said, you know, flat out.

We're not deep. Deep football team. And one of the reasons why we're not playing our starters is because we need those guys to be healthy. And now you look, Tony and after last week against Pittsburgh, that thin 53 man is even thinner. AJ Brown is out. Of course, Michael Wenu starting right guard is going to be out. He was placed on IR. And when you look at the receiver position alone, just to give you an example, you know, Matt Collins, pop Douglas and Kyle Williams last weekend combined for four catches and 37 yards. That ain't going to do it this weekend. No, it's not, which brings me back to something that I featured on Locked on NFL. It's like, I don't know why they trade and keep Sean Boutek. I'm like, you know, that's a pretty decent player. Demario Douglas, however, is a Jacksonville Florida native. So we always like when he does good things. But much like New England, the Jaguars did not play their starters in the preseason at all. They had three joint practices each week. And they settled with that mainly because the offensive line, most of those, some of those

guys were banged up being switched around, moved to different positions. Coles Van Langen really didn't practice until the last week prior to. It was after the 53 was already made up. So he got one week of practice. And then, oh, by the way, you're moving from left tackle to right tackle because Anton Harrison is now our left tackle. And the first week of the matter, much they were hot. They came out the box and beat Cleveland soundly. And then all of a sudden last week played really well in the first half, seeing the run out of gas in that altitude and Denver. So both teams are in now in a position where they're one in one, both were considered playoff teams. We don't have as much down here to worry about because even though we're one and one, everybody else in the division is oh and two. And we still have to play them. Right. On the other hand, you guys got the big blue red, white and blue. I would say blue, red and white, but those are y'all colors too. I call it the red, white, blue, gorilla up in Northern New York, upstate New York that is going to be the team that you have to record with. Yeah. And they're coming up next week. So, you know, if you're the Patriots, we were looking at this when they lost to Seattle,

right? Tough loss. Obviously Drake may melt it down in the fourth quarter. Everybody saw it. And you're saying to yourself, you know, last weekend's game was was a really big game, even though it was only week two because you now have to go on the road to Jacksonville. And then you follow that up by going on the road to Buffalo. Obviously that ain't no joke back to back. So, you know, if you're going to get one out of the two on the road, you feel like this one would be easier than Buffalo's, but the problems. You talked about the offensive line, you know, with Michael Wenu being out for the Patriots, now at right guard Greg Van Roten replaced him last week and he was atrocious. Now I'm going to give him some grace, Tony, because he joined the team very late. He missed pretty much all of camp. So he was thrown into the deep end against the talented defensive line of Pittsburgh, but he's got to play much better. You also mentioned the K Sean booty trade. Look, K Sean booted the Patriots. They saw their receiver room. They said we're deep there. It's one of the only positions that we go six or seven deep. And because of what Mike Vrable said, we're not deep enough.

We got to go out and make some moves and add to this roster. And part of that was Jalen Reed. So you fast forward to this weekend. Craig Woodson did not practice on Wednesday. He had a sling on Sunday, but apparently according to reports that sling is now off. So maybe Woodson plays maybe he doesn't, but he is. He is a very good football player. So Craig Woodson at safety, he might be out. Del Pettis, their third safety to start the season. He was placed on IR with a high ankle sprain. So now you've got Jalen Reed. And that's why you made that trade because you needed more depth at that position. And going to be a lot of pressure on Jalen Reed on the back end this weekend if he has to play because again, the booty trade happened on August 24th. So he's been in New England for about a month. And he's going to be put out there against Trevor Lawrence in company. Yeah. And the receivers, even with Brian Thomas Jr. struggling, the receivers might be the best unit on the Jaguar team. But you have to be able to get to that last week against Denver.

They weren't really able to get to it because their offensive line had problems. But when the locking Denver and when the best part of your team is the part that needs time to get in and out of their routes, stack, release and all of that stuff, you got to wait and get the ball to him first. But if your quarterback is under the rest and Trevor Lawrence is under the rest a couple of times, not all game, but enough that it forced him into a couple of mistakes and early throws that led to drops because Brian Thomas Jr. wasn't ready for the ball. All of these things kind of work together like clockwork. And I know you guys, you guys do have one player though, Gabe Yackeus, that we were very, very happy with him in the pre-draft process. But the Jaguar chose to go the other way. So go ahead and tell us man how good he is because I, yeah, for me and John Levin used to go back and forth about him. John Levin, you're wearing a very high on, I said, I don't know what you looking at, man, I like him. He looks like he has all the goods, doesn't he? Yeah. Yackeus, you know, when you look at what he did in the pre season, he was a disaster.

Joint practices, pre season games, he was a mess. No discipline, no awareness, completely lost on way too many plays. Tony, he's been a different guy since the beginning of the regular season. And he might be one of those cats. You and I have seen this before, right? When somebody might not be the practice player, might not be the joint practice player, definitely not the pre season player because they're not necessarily game planning for those teams, those weeks, whereas when you get into the regular season and you get a rhythm, you get a full week of preparation and an acus might be one of those guys that just his, his confidence and his ability on the field is awareness is so much different and better when he has that full week under his belt because he has looked like a completely different guy last week Pittsburgh went after them. They went after him early. It didn't work. They tried to kill him on a play action bootleg and he stayed right there on the edge. He dropped against our now Washington at one point in that game and Rogers kind of, you know, was bootlegging and trying to extend the play and bring acus, I think up and

acus stayed with Washington the entire time and it ended up being a throw away play for Aaron Rogers. So he has been a completely different guy and I'll tell you it's only they need that. The Patriots need that because their edge position was a big question coming in to this season. Elijah pondered by the way, he's been terrific. He was the best player I thought on the field last week for that defense. He's been good. Accus has been good and they might even have to be better because Dremont Jones left that Steelers game last weekend with an injury. We don't know if he's going to, if he's going to play this weekend. Didn't look like he practiced at all on Wednesday. Then we found out that Quintavia's Hutchins who was their fourth edge player on the game. He is also hurt. So last week they put Milton Williams on the edge for a few snaps. That's something that they might do again on Sunday and they also sign Jose Ramirez. If you know him, good luck to you. No, I don't. He's an edge player from a small school.

I think it's central Michigan, Western Michigan, one of those Michigan's and they're going to sign him to the 53 man roster. That defensive end position might be another problem. Oh, and by the way, I got to throw this out there because you brought up the wide receivers. Carlton Davis missed last week with the neck. He was back at practice on Wednesday. It looks like he's probably going to be good. But man, oh man, if Davis takes a step back at practice this week and you're going into this weekend with Craig Woodson, Carlton Davis, Dremont Jones, those guys out and not playing on that side of the football could be a very tough challenge for that Patriots defense. The way you described that has given my Jaguar listeners here. Okay, now Wig, they don't have no reason to not win because Nick Cattle just said half 15 is the walking wounded. And the other thing is you said, y'all can say necessarily practice players, a game player. They want Travis Hunter to play 120, you know, he's coming off of an injury. He needs refinement. He's learning two things at once. They say, just put him out there.

I told him football doesn't work that way. I don't know. Y'all can just show up and play well when the game starts. Jaguar fans might think that that's what Travis can do too. We're going to talk about some more of these key matchups. I want to focus specifically on the offensive line from my standpoint, the offensive line against the Jaguars, Ed Rushers and their interior. We'll get to that in just a second here on the cross over on Locked On. Jaguars and Locked On Patriots. All right, today's show is sponsored and brought to you by Fandall. Running it down here with Nick Cattle from Locked On Patriots. Keep matchups winning formulas. All of those things. For me from the host team's perspective, I'm going to go with the Pass Rush duo of Josh Allen and Trevon Walker setting the edge but also getting to Drake May. Last week the Denver Broncos were able to get the ball out really, really quickly on three

step drops. And even when he didn't get it out quickly, Bo Nix has a getaway car and you know, he can get away from whoever he needs to and he was able to throw the ball away. Drake May also has a getaway car in his feet who can also run. How's the Patriots offensive line played despite those injuries? The rookie from last year Campbell, how's he doing? Is he doing a little bit better? What do you say on the edge of that line? Well Campbell's been much better. You know, I know a lot of people outside of New England just watch the playoffs and they just watched the Super Bowl and look, Campbell, you can't put lipstick on that, pick the way he played in the postseason, but he did have an injury and he told people and there was a lot of, you know, talk about how injured he was, how injured he might not have been. He's looked like a completely different guy, Tony, from the beginning of camp. He's put on a little bit more weight and muscle. His frame is better. His anchor is better. His technique is better. He has more versatility with that technique. So he's been much better and you know, the fact that he's played against the two defenses

he's played against and the fact he's played pretty well make me even more bullish on how he's done because it's not like he's beating up the, you know, a junior college football team, right? I mean, you play against the Seahawks, you play against the Steelers, those are no jokes when it comes to getting that to the quarterback. So will Campbell's been good? Elijah Veritucker was terrible in week one. He was much, much better in week two. So maybe he knocked the rust off and he's ready to go. Jared Wilson at center really was the biggest problem last week in past protection. That's his natural position. He's a little light in the took us and so certain matchups might give him some issues, but he and past protection. I thought run blocking. He was really good, by the way, past protection though. He's had some problems. Greg Vanro and right guard as I mentioned in the first segment replacing Michael Wenu. That could be a big issue. And Morgan Moses is just steady at right tackle. He's not. He's not great, but he's not bad. He's going to give you some steady play. So that's how the olions looked.

If you're going to get this offensive line, most of it's been through the interior so far. Yeah. And that's good for the Jaguar fan base because the interiors where they struggled last week. And it was one of the biggest offseason things that they don't feel was properly addressed. Even though they did make a trade for Rooka Roro from Atlanta and they drafted Albert Regis. And they got Eric Armstead back healthy, which he wasn't last year through two games. They haven't really gotten what they want in that area. The Jaguars are still very, very good against the run. They were able to pop some things late in that game to sort of burn the clock. But that's because at that point, the Jags, I think, were affected a little bit by that altitude early in the season and the fact that you had the altitude to the fact that they didn't play much in the preseason. And then they didn't have to rotate a lot during Cleveland, the game against Cleveland because they were winning a lot. I think a whole bunch of things. Murphy's Law just kind of caught up with him in a lot of ways. And then I don't want to shake a stick at Denver. There was a pretty good football team.

So yeah, those things can absolutely happen. From your perspective, what are the things that you're looking forward to or not looking forward to in this matchup? You know, I'm fascinated by what the Patriots are going to do against Parker Washington. Christian Gonzalez, obviously, is their number one guy. He's been absolutely unbelievable to start this season. He is playing like an all pro. He is playing like arguably the best corner in football. You can put him with Patrick Sartana early on. Maybe a couple of other guys, but he's been that good Tony. I mean, he has been terrific. Last week, the Patriots played 48% man coverage, which is a very, very high number in 2026. And that was without Carlton Davis. And so Christian Gonzalez has been terrific. Their coverage has been mostly terrific. And so I wonder, you know, will they say, hey, look, Gonzalez is going to shadow Parker Washington. You know, will that be his assignment? Will Marcus Jones get Washington from time to time? Because I feel like, you know, he's the heart of that offense with the passing offense,

right? Jacobi Myers, you know, MIA, Brian Thomas Jr. Still very up and down, which I'm still surprised by. So when you, when you look at this offense, it's like if, if you can bottle up Washington, you feel pretty good about limiting that, that passing offense. But if he gets going, now you're worried about the other guys on the outside and all of a sudden, it rolls down hill and you can have a problem. The other one I'm looking at, by the way, for the Patriots on the good side is their interior defensive line and Christian, Barmore and Milton Williams and what they can do possibly against the Jaguars interior offensive line. Because, you know, I saw, I've watched three quarters of the four quarters against the Broncos and they had some problems on that offensive line last weekend. That's a problem with Zach Allen. So if I'm Milton Williams, I might be looking at my chops. Yeah, they did have problems. And to me, that's all the moving around, you know, they believe in versatility. The problem is with moving guys around this year, it wasn't just like to say, so it wasn't

like the five or six guys that they were going to play. They started moving around early. They're moving around late because dudes were getting hurt and weren't coming back from injury. So that's the part of this. It's not just the new familiarity with the new position. I call it cohesion, chemistry and all of those things that that lineman have to have. It's also, you ain't practice there very much. So Liam Cornie mentioned some of the things that they need to improve on. They have to show those things first and practice. Travis Hunter's probably going to get a heavy dose. I know he's going to play more on defense. At least that's what it sounds like. And then they're going to find some spots on offense. I mean, we've been reminded of Jack Warren for three days. This is the long game with him. And he's coming off of a major injury way. He didn't do anything for eight months. So part of this whole thing with Travis is it's about whether or not the team wins, not necessarily whether or not they showcase him as the best two way player to ever play the game. We'll get into him. Some other people that would be key contributors to this game and we'll do it in just a second here on the

crossover edition of Locked on Jaguars and Locked on Patriots. All right. Today's show is sponsored and brought to you by Kowshi. And people will be trying to buy you out of your position on Kowshi. You're trading against peers in a live market. Meaning there's no house. And today's show is sponsored and brought to you by game day health. That is right, man. It's all about you being healthy with game day health. Let me tell you how you do that. You don't do it by taking the quiz on your phone. And you don't do it by box just showing up at your door. It's not a clinic when it comes to men's health. Things like energy, sleep, drive, and how you feel day to day. It takes more than the questionnaire to get to the bottom of that game day.

Men's health is a real in person men's health clinic with more than 430 locations across the United States and Canada. Men can meet face to face with a licensed clinician. Get labs drawn in the office and receive initial results in as little as 15 minutes. Game day looks at the full picture, your symptoms, your labs before developing the treatment plan. And then because they continue testing and evaluating care can be adjusted over time based on your personal data. Get yourself checked out book your complimentary test and consult at game day men's health. That's one word game day men's health dot com to consult. Get after it man. Game day men's health. All right. It's time for us to talk about how the game is going to go like when the coaches sit over there all week and work and put together a game plan.

It's going to be what it's going to be. And I think this game is going to be very, very physical. Both coaches believe in physicality. They believe in establishing the dominance trying to assert themselves that to me. The first thing I think about is Milton Williams. The second thing I think about is Gonzo because he absolutely can shadow Parker Washington. Now according to true media, I believe Parker Washington was only guarded for 15 to 16% of the time by Pat Surten. This is a whole different team with a whole different concept last week. It was a Jacobi Myers that drew Pat Surten. This week it has to be probably Jacobi Myers to take the heat off of Parker Washington a little bit and Brian Thomas Jr. Has to get rid of those yips or whatever it is is making him drop balls as soon as he has contact. To me, the key is that turnovers trying to establish the run getting to the point where you can dictate and run when you want to. Not just when you have to.

It's going to be the key for the Jaguars. The thing that they have to do though is what the Patriots did after week one. You got to shake that hangover off and get right back on the horse and let that game be gone and move on to the next one. Yeah, it's how about running the football and I feel the same about the Patriots. You know, I think the Jaguars, they'll play some too high safety. And the Patriots have to prove they can run the football against those alignments against that scheme. And that's been a big part of the problem. Defences are telling Drake May we're not going to give up the deep all against you. We're going to force you to dink and dunk. We're going to force you to be patient. We're going to force you to make maybe some tough throws underneath. And we're going to force you to run the football and the Patriots they knew this was coming. You know, during the offseason, they signed Julian Hill from the dolphins are really good blocking tight end. He got hurt for the year. So he's done and they brought in Reggie Gilliam from Buffalo, full back, who has been one of the best fullbacks in football over the past few years. But he has not been very good Tony early on in this season. So they need Reggie Gilliam to be better. They need to run the football attack the two high safeties that helps you with down in distance.

There's less pressure on Drake May and it opens up the play action more often, which, you know, theoretically will get Drake May going. And you mentioned it. I agree with you. You know, physical nasty. That's the tone that this game. I think each coach wants this game to feel like. And so which one imposes their will at a higher level. And I also noticed that bone X was able to run on that defense a little bit with some design run. So I just have to wonder the Patriots haven't done a lot of it. But maybe just maybe we see a couple of Drake May designed runs on third down this weekend to mix it up a little bit. Yeah, and see that's the dangerous part. Everybody does their job. And then all of a sudden in the process of doing that job, if the sticks are third and four Drake May is definitely somebody that can get to those sticks. And that negated the past rush for the Jaguar's last week too. I think another key to this game is the Jaguars can't look at who's not there for New England because it sounds like I honestly sound like we work at an insurance company with the way to all those names that you were listening to the picture.

I was like, well, who's going to show up? But the problem is is I hope that they don't worry about that. The other part of this that I hope that they cannot do and not afford to do is start looking ahead because just like you mentioned, you guys have Buffalo. We got Cincinnati and Philadelphia and then Houston. Yeah, this is so it's almost if there's a so called must win game in week three for two teams that have high aspirations. This might be it, bro. I mean, when you look at the absences, you say, look, don't overlook the Patriots and Mike Vrable was known in Tennessee to get the most out of his team into win games that he wasn't supposed to win with so many injuries on his roster. So, you know, that's something to keep in mind. But I think it's also defensive communication, right? Like Liam Cullin is going to throw a lot of stuff as a defense. He's going to throw a lot of formations, a lot of different personnel, motion. He's going to do a lot of different things.

And so if the Patriots do have young guys, new guys, dudes that are being thrown in, you have to communicate. You have to communicate because, you know, one or two mixups can result in one or two explosive plays in one or two explosive plays can be the difference in this game on Sunday. So, if there are going to be a lot of changes, like if Dremont Jones is out and what's in his out and those other guys are out, can you communicate and execute but first communicate because if you get lost against Liam Cullin's offense, it could be a long day. You're going to give up big plays and you just can't afford that if you're the Patriots. No, you can't. So the Jaguar's went from week one looking terrible on kickoff covers. They fixed that somewhat last week in Denver. But last week, it seems like every time it was an opportunity for something to go bad in a second half where they got out scored 17 to three. That's what happened. My key to victory here and not really a score or game prediction.

If the Jaguars are going to win this game every single time they cross midfield, they have to come away with points, even if it's three because the kicker is normally very sure. He owns the NFL record for field goals. He missed one in Denver last week that would have kind of been like the spurs hitting a bucket in the fourth quarter against the nicks in one of those games that would have at least held them off for one game. It's like every single opportunity that the Jaguars had to stop that momentum last week just went out of the window. So they have to take advantage of all of the things that are presented to him. Use the fact that it's the home field because they're not going to be back here for a while. They're going to be three or four weeks before they come back here for another game. That's what I think the keys are. The keys are to take advantage of everything that you get and don't make a whole bunch of mistakes. Yeah, the final key for me for the Patriots is take care of the football. And I know it's cliche and I know it's easy to say, but the Jaguars, you know, you look at their turnover differential. They're plus two through two weeks. Drake May has turned the ball over way too much.

He obviously has the four interceptions. And I would say all four are bad. They're just their bad interceptions. They're bad decisions. A couple of bad throws mixed in as well. So you've just got to be able to take care of the football because Jacksonville, you know, they've created three turnovers. They only have one giveaway. So they've done a really good job of protecting the ball. I don't know what Trevor Lawrence was thinking last week with that pick. Maybe he's just like, hey, Riley Moss. I'm just keep throwing it at him and you know, he'll drop it. But I don't know what that was all about. It was not a great play by Trevor. I thought he was really good through the three quarters that I've watched outside of that play. But yeah, you got to take care of the ball because you're on the road. You've got these injuries. I don't know if you're going to be able to explode for a bunch of points against this defense. So you've got to value those possessions and you can't have your quarterback huking on himself. Because if that happens, the game's over. Yeah, no doubt about it. Either way, I know after the game, man, we're going to have a lot to talk about.

And I'll do the post game show for here. I know you'll get on yours because your post game show after the first week, man, was one of the best shows I heard in a long time. And I told you that too, man, I said, Kato killed that thing, man, but the reaction after Drake made almost out of similar reaction when Trevor Lawrence threw that ball last week. But it was, you know, I didn't want to be trying to look like I was in Timothy. I'm imitating you and all of that stuff. And then, man, it was, it was good time.
