Here is David Quadrali. He is the host of now West Coast Conversation, name change there from Kinox Convo, and of course, DFO Vancouver, Editor, and... That sounds like a collegiate conference. Name change there as well from Washington's playing in the WCC this year. He joins us from the South O'Kennog and Event Center, the SOEC in Pentect in ATKinox Training Camp. How are you, fella? Great. You read my mind with the fire in the whiskey. I really became a whiskey drinker over the offseason. That's my big offseason update. Really started to enjoy the whiskey, and I got an outdoor fire pit in my front yard, and I use it all the time, and I'm the whiskey. It's great. You guys got me salivating with that ad read. Go get a bottle of bear face. Absolutely. And of course, David spent most of his summer at NAPLE Stadium in line to get all of the giveaways on two stays and other days that were a giveaway. He's making a man cave filled with Vancouver Canadians. Giveaways. You got to follow him on Twitter and on Insta to see
the quadrally man cave. Okay. Kennog's camp day two. They're on the ice, but you had a standout from day one, Mr. Quadrally. Who was that? I mean, I'm always interested to see how the young guys are going to fare. Right? Like last year it was breaking the coutes, and what we saw from coutes was puck carrying ability. The shot was good. The skating was good, and he was excelling on all these rush drills. But where he started to kind of show some works and say, okay, this is an 18 year old kid, was when you watch them go into board battles with NHLers. Right? And they do a lot of battle drills at these tents. And that was kind of where he and even admitted this afterwards that like going up against an NHLer like a Brock Festware guy is super strong on his stick, along the wall. Going up against that guy takes a lot out of you. And you can see with breaking the coutes that that was going to be his area of struggling. And then yeah, we saw it in the three NHL games that he got to play. Thanks to some injuries creating roster spots for him. So that was the coutes thing, right? Like I always like to watch the young guys and see how they fare.
How they fare. Coutes did a good job. And then he made the team. He only made the team because there was those opportunities available. Those opportunities don't look like they're going to be available for a guy like Adam Novotny, Brooks Ryosuke certainly, further along the Novotny. But Novotny, this guy who we kept hearing about pro-ready frame, pro-ready frame, pro-ready frame when he was drafted. So I see him in his first step. And what do I see? I see the elite shot because we've heard about that. I see solid skating. And I see a guy going up against NHLers in the board battle drills and looking right at home. And I'm just thinking to myself, like this guy's going to play in the OHL this year. Like I can't wait to see what he's going to do in the O. But man, like you, you, you see him up against these NHLers. And I'm like, okay, this is going to be a guy who, if not at the end of an OHL season, comes here is going to get some pro games in a hurry here. Because he, I heard about the pro-ready frame and I've seen it with my own eyes. Do you think there's a chance he gets kept on the final roster and gets that NHL look
see before being sent down to junior David? I've been trying to map this out since mid-August, right? I'm like, okay, what's Adam and Novotny's path to making this roster and doing the goods? I brought it up. Brave and Cooz made this team partly because there were injuries. Teddy Bluger, right? They weren't going to send onto your O. down on waivers. So now you look at it, their wings and they're pretty loaded on the wings. And to me, like, I think the only path barring an injury, right? Like barring an injury for Novotny to make this team. To me, the only path is if Jonathan Lechermacky just puts on an absolute stinkfest every time he has eyes on him and he gets sent down because he's waver exempt. But this anti-yo-yoing stuff that Ryan Johnson's talking about, which I like, by the way, would kind of suggest that they would love to give Lechermacky just a solid run at the NHL level and that he's ready to go and he's going to play a bunch of games at the NHL level. He's skating on an NHL line at training camp. Hasn't looked out of place. He's actually on the ice right now. His group B's on the ice first today.
And I don't see that path because unless, unless Lechermacky, like I said, puts on a stinkfest and gets sent down to the minors, I just don't see any path for Novotny to make this roster. And that's not a slight against him. It's just that it's crowded and it's not the same opportunity that Kooz had last year. If they give Lechermacky the run, David, do they have to give him the run in the top six or could you see it working on a third line, say, with Philippe Edel? Well, this is a team with three, fourth lines, basically. Right? So just put them on any of those. Give him a shot on, like, if you're doing your line-com, it was like, give him a shot with Philippe Edel as a center on the, yeah, I guess third line because you got PD and Rossi, one, two, third line. Yeah, that's fine. What I really don't want to see, guys, is his ice time dropping below eight minutes a game and going to the press box. And then he's back in the lineup and he's playing on the first line. And then it's 15 minutes a night. And then he's back down when he starts to screw up, like, let guys make mistakes.
Let guys make well-intentioned mistakes. And a guy like that let him get his confidence because his game relies so heavily on that confidence. And I just think that's kind of the, that's kind of the path. He's like, I don't really care where he plays in the lineup. As long as it's a steady spot and a steady role. I don't want to see him go-yoing. I only talked about five on five lines. I don't want to see him bouncing on an offer of power play too or power play one for that matter. Like, let him find a spot on that power play and let him make his home there because that's going to be a big part of his production and his ability to carve out a role for himself at the NHL level. This is the first season where I'm going to preface questions to David by saying things like, you've covered this team for a long time now, David. I think we've reached that age with David now that we can, you've reached that threshold. You've covered this team for a long time now. How different is it to see a head coach speak about utilization, deployment of players so openly and freely because he knows he's not going to be held to account for wins and losses. Previous years, coaches, when they get young players put in a voice
in front of them, they've got to walk the dance here of, yeah, it's a nice player. I'd like to help develop him. But, you know, I'm not going to cost my Tuesday night versus the predators because of it. Mayma Holtzher doesn't have that anvil hanging over his head. So we could see some different things here this year, right? Yeah, I don't know if you guys can hear Manny yelling in the background. As you're asking that question, that was a lot of time for two days running. David, we heard him two hits yesterday and today as well. This guy's going to lose his voice, fellas. Like this guy's going to lose his voice by the end of the day. But your question, Blake, yeah, it's so funny because everybody talks about all the vibes are high, the high vibes. And RJ pointed out like I've been trying to point out as much as possible. We were saying the exact same thing about this team last year that all everything's fixed, the vibes are high, the vibes are high. The vibes were not in fact high or maybe they were, but then of course that goes to crap by November, right? So let's let's relax on that. But the one thing I'll save like two year to your point and to your question is that
there are so clearly different expectations for this team. And yet it's intense. Like yet it's intense out there. Yet the guys are being pushed to not play losing hockey. And that's been a huge point of emphasis. We heard it from Shen. We heard it from Julian. We heard it from De Bruce. And of course we heard it from many Maholta on Wednesday that they know losses are going to come. But this team has played a lot of losing hockey where the effort isn't there. And the reason, again, you hear all these players talk about the vibes at the end of the year and why fans were cheering on a 30 second place team and why the building was full. You know what guys? At a certain point, they just started to give a crap again down the stretch of last season. And we didn't see that for all of the season. We saw it down the stretch and that's what these players are referencing. And I hope that they recognize that that's why the fans were supporting them. That's why the fans were coming out and that's why people were cheering them on was because like they're a bad team on paper. But the effort was there. And I think that's going to be the emphasis for this team. So it's a completely different mindset. Like it's a completely different mindset than we've ever seen before.
Again, from a coach, from a management group. And again, the alignment, we've talked about alignment in the past. But it really feels like it now that, okay, everybody is on the same page here with this team and their expectations. I also like the fact that the young players before we close it on the young players. They have a different expectation too. Like I don't think Novotny is under any illusions that he's playing in the OHL this year. Might he get the intentional few game carrot just to show you what it's like? Yeah, he might, but it'll just be for that. Like he's not making the team, making the team. And Brooks Rogowski has no intention of making the team. He's going to school next year. And to me, the fact that the players are on board for the long game. That they know that they've got it puts everybody I think at ease in the organization of the greater good here, the long-term vision. Everybody's on board with that. Yeah, absolutely. And like one last time we could say that, right? You heard people seem like they were kind of in that camp.
And those people are quickly exiled. Then you hear people, or you see kind of coaches toy with their line combos a little bit and say, okay, I want to give this guy a shot. And then it's over in a matter of moments because the players, the young player naturally makes mistakes. Like this alignment is going to be so important for these guys. And again, like I said, I'm sounding super, super positive right now. It's day two of training camp. It was positive at this time last year. As well. So now it's about, okay, let's see how they make good on this. What does it actually look like when they play losing hockey or when guys start to make mistakes? How are veteran players treated compared to young players? When the veterans start to play losing hockey, what happens then? Like these are all questions that are going to get answered throughout the year. And could have different kind of finishes. Yeah, a seven-game losing streak might change the math a little bit. Oh yeah. Yeah. Manning in the coaches doing bag skates yesterday, David. Absolutely love it.
And I love this rationale, right? Like we're not going to ask them to do anything that we're not willing to do ourselves. I mean, that must have been a trip because I've covered a hell of a lot of NHL practices with a hell of a lot of coaches. I have never once seen the coaching staff get on the line and bag skate with the fellas. Only you will love you when a dug a little deeper. Oh my gosh. If coaches are on the side. But yeah. Well, Carmen reminded me of a story yesterday on our show of Whistler training camp. Bruce Boudre was the head coach and they did their bag skate. And I don't know if you guys remember, but Bruce on skates. It was evident that Bruce didn't go for skates very often. And at the end of the bag skate, when everybody was doubled over and the famously and pretty great shape, JT Miller was just skating around talking to everybody. Quiet, arena and Whistler. You hear JT go to Bruce and go, are you next? You hopping on the line next and everybody just died laughing. People were, that really brought some levity to it. But yeah, the whole trust. So he jumps on the line yesterday and I think it was really funny because,
you have all the people on Twitter, like circling which players are behind Mani Maholtrich. Luke Shen, the veteran who feels like he can speak a little more freely, of course, made it clear. He's like, look, we even did a battle drill right before. The coaches come out fresh and make us look like the flow ones. So that's important context. But I loved it. I loved it. It was great to see. I loved it. It was good. Rob Brindamore is in the gym room with this team. Yeah. His brand of work could actually outskate some of this Stanley Cup champion. So I'm going to show you. Yes. Yeah. The city is racing up the grind with all the prospects. I hope they still do it. They didn't do it this year. Like they didn't do the grind this year at all. Yeah. The death camp, they didn't do the grind. But I'd love to see the scenes get back up. The nutURE Presidents of hockey operations will participate in that. But I like it. Okay. Now to the big story. David, how did the Lewis Patterson look? About the same as last year. Like if I were a betting man and you were, well, you guys asked me like, oh, just like he's poised for a bounce back on day one of camp. I'm not going to lie to you and say, oh, yeah, for sure.
What's going to matter, guys, is what happens from well, preseason games? But team action. Like I want to see the guy in game action, of course, right? But so far at camp, I wasn't looking at him. He was like, oh my gosh, he was ahead of everybody in the bank. He said, oh my gosh, like not a single puck has been involved. Oh my gosh, he hasn't lost a single puck battle. This guy looks like he's just on fire. And I'm not saying that about anybody. I'm just saying that you're asking about a Lewis Patterson. And I'm just going to say that, yeah, I've seen this player before. Like you said, Blake, I've covered the scene for a long time now. I've seen this Lewis Patterson before. And he just doesn't look any different to me. And I'm not trying to say that in a positive or negative way. I'm just saying that it's not like I'm sat here day one of camp and said, this guy's woefully out of shape. He looks terrible. But I'm also not saying, oh, yeah, this guy looks like he just was ready to go and just going to be about fire in the belly intensity. I'm going to lead the group by example. There was none of that. And your gameplay is going to ultimately decide. But guys, looking good on day one of camp is easier
than looking good in gameplay. Like showing a little hutspa in drills. That is, that's easier, isn't it? Then scoring a national hockey league goal. Yeah, I mean, okay, what are we looking for? Like, what are we looking for? Because is he trying in the drills? Yes, he is. He is absolutely trying in the drills. But he was doing all of those things last year. Like, that's my point. To me, like, this isn't going to translate. What I'm seeing right now isn't going to translate to whether he's good or bad this year. But in the season, he's been bad. It's looked a lot like it's looked this year. And even when he was a, you know, on the point player, there was obviously a couple training camps where when he was younger, we were talking like, oh my gosh. This guy's just coming out, shot out of a cannon. Like, he's a veteran player. I just, you know, I, I, veteran players are always interesting in camp. But yeah, with PD, I'm just, I just, I don't have much to report to be honest. So, okay, so let's be clear on what you're seeing. He's not dogging it. It's just not a neck. You're not seeing a new gear. Is that fair?
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, because he's, he's, he's looked fine at, he's looked fine at all these camps. Like, he looked fine last year. Fine, yeah. That's all I'm saying. It's, he's just like, he's, same, the same guy I saw last year. Just like, he was the same guy, the Jake Milford, right? Like, it was the same guy, same body language, all that. It was the exact same. So, that's all I have to say. He's just the same. Same start. Time to ask your nation gear poll question. David on paper. Are they the worst team in the league? I hope so. I really hope so. Like, this team, this team is the worst team on paper this year, next year, and maybe the year after that. Actually, if they want to actually win a Stanley Cup, when we talk about alignment and actual goals, if you're trying to build a team that's going to win the Stanley Cup, yeah, you're going to need some more top picks. You're going to need some more great shots at a number one overall pick. And you're going to need not only are you going to need a number one overall pick, but you're going to need like one of those top three picks to be a real difference maker. Like, the San Jose Sharks aren't where they are without Mac and celebrate you, right? The Chicago Black Arts obviously aren't where they are without Conor Bernard. And the Black Arts aren't even that great.
Like, the Black Arts still have so much work to do, and they've had these volume picks. Like, think about how many picks a team like Chicago has made in the first round over the past five years, right? Think about how many they've made and where they're still where they are. It's going to take some patience and it's going to take some more hydrophics. So yes, I only do I hope they're the worst team. I think if they're like even knocking on the door of a wild card spot by December, like I think they have to get really serious about some sort of sell off of, not obviously not your young guys, but like what is what can you get for an olpironic midseason? What can you get for like Marcarasi? You have to get serious. You have to get serious about making this team worse on paper to the point that they can get that first overall pick, get the best odds as a verse or a big. Now that being said, I think they're already there. I don't think you have to do a big midseason sell off. I think this team is worse on paper, but I think now that they have a competent head coach in Maddie Malhotra, it might make things a little interesting.
I don't think they're going to come out and exceed expectations dramatically or anything like that. All I'm saying is that I hope the worst team, and if they're not, they need to make sure that they are because they've misidentified what they are because this team needs these picks. And these guys know it. Okay, buddy. Big crew up there yourself. Jay Pat, Tyson Cole, Jake Fraser. I know you got plenty of content and coverage coming up. Give us a preview of what's coming up on the DFO Vancouver and of course West Coast Conversation. Yeah, so you can go, it's still Knox Army.com for January, but Daily Trace Soft Vancouver's last Knox Army.com. You can go there live notebooks, tons of different features. We've got a lot of written content going up on the site. And then, yeah, West Coast Conversation, Harmon and I live at 2.30, depending on how late media ends up going here. Yeah, that's going to be today. And then actually, Jay Pat tonight tomorrow will have coverage of the scrimmage because we're going to be watching that and then we're going to go live for a special edition, a special Saturday
edition of West Coast Conversation on Saturday. So I'll be fine. And buddy, how about this? Like starting a week from Monday, Alfred and Brough in the morning, we're at noon. You guys are at 2. And then of course, Rankwide Vancouver with Jay Pat and we'll be Jamie Dott a whole lot on Knox Game Nights. That starts on the 22nd in the pre-season. Not the first pre-season game, which is coming up this weekend for having tomorrow for having six. We got a pre-season game, but the 22nd Rankwide returns covering the pre-season gaming game. A full day of programming, huh? Coming up here on the nation network. Very exciting. It's what fans deserve, right? Like, it's what fans in this market deserve. And I'm talking about this in Jay Pat, like, there's a few people like, you guys are just trying to recreate 1040. It's like, yeah, that was the best product that this market has seen in such a long time. Like, I mean, that's not like I grew up on 1040. I was an avid avid listener of 1040. I was listening to
Alfred and Brough. So having those guys back in the morning, again, like you said, having all of us back, having everybody under this umbrella, like, it's great. It's awesome. And it's, I think it's a great time to do Vancouver Sports Ben. If you guys do karaoke night, we're going to need video. Oh, I want to see Jay Pat singing Creed or something. Make sure it happens. Okay. I'm going to do my best. I'm going to do my best. Also, I need to track it's a great time to be a Vancouver Sports Ben. I need to retract that officially from the record because objectively, it's not. Wow. Listener. Listener. Viewer. Maybe that catch. Why catch Lions have a chance here. See, see, use one of the championship, actually. Yeah, that's right. That's right. You're seeing your seas baseball David. I just love the fact that you grew up listening to Blake Price. You know, the Blake Price experience, the pre games, the post games, the evening show, the morning show, a different lifetime. Whatever Blake was on the dial, David was earnestly listening, grow it up in town. Appreciate this, buddy. Have a good weekend. Catch up soon.
