Debating Jalen Hurts' Role In Running Game

Jalen Hurt spoke yesterday, you I thought he said a couple of really interesting things. Actually, both of them pertained to Sean May. Let's start with the first one. Hugh, you know, we've spoken a lot this summer about where manions going to be on Sundays, right? Is he going to be in the booth or the field? It sounds like he's going to be in the booth. That sounds like the plan. Well, Jalen Hurt was asked about this like if he had a preference and Hugh, I think it's the first time that Jalen was asked or at least this part of it came up because we we've been talking about this in the frame of man. Yeah, he feels about well, here's Jalen and he kind of threw an interesting nugget out there about what he's been used to versus what we might get Sunday. I don't know. We'll see. We'll see. It's been the first a bit of first time a coach has been in the play college, been in the booth since

1:00college. So, you know, I think just again, the importance of building that chemistry and getting hip to hip, where I'm knowing what he's thinking. I each processing things and ultimately, you know, I think the end game chemistry that'll be built, the end game experiences where we have coming soon to be very valuable for us and what we ultimately want to accomplish. So he did go on to later say here that whatever is good for Sean is best for the team. Like if Sean wants to be in the booth, he's fine with it. But that's an interesting angle that I hadn't thought about what Jalen's been used to and he said he hasn't had a coordinator a play caller not on the sidelines with him since college. So, because he was with Lane Kiffin, right? Cause Lane Lane was Lane with him for. He said, I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I know he had a table. He had Mike Loxley for a moment. Maybe he had Lane. Cause Lane was on the sideline because I remember I remember saving cursing him out quite a few times. Lincoln Riley. Of course, at Oklahoma was on the sidelines. So he's saying it's been a while for him to not be able to just walk over to the play caller on the sideline and discuss it. He's going to be on the phone. He could be on that red phone. Well, you know

2:02what? I don't I don't know if it's like that. I think they can talk to him in there here with the helmet. And his helmet. He did mention the phone yesterday. So he did. So I guess they could do either. Yeah. Well, can the can Jalen speak into the helmet? Like, you know what I mean? Like Jalen could hear him in the helmet. Could Jalen talk back? I don't know what they probably had to be on the phone. I mean, probably be on the right. Man, you could get him in his helmet. He could say, Hey, I need to talk to you. Right. And hey, when you get down with this series, I need to talk to you. He could do that. But yeah, yeah, he probably had to be on the phone. It's an adjustment. I didn't think about the adjustment for Jalen. Like, we had talked about it as what's good for Manion? What? How does he see the field? What's where is he comfortable? It's that it is an adjustment for Jalen. Well, I think, you know, it's funny because I think man, I had his conversation a couple of weeks ago. And he was basically giving his his two cents about where he felt like all the coordinators I remember defensively. They're on the sideline, but they were veteran coordinators, right? So maybe that has something to do with it. He hasn't, he wants to see the whole field until he gets comfortable with being out

3:04down there on the field. So it might be one of those things. It's a comfort thing right now. And as he, as he progresses as a play caller, he'll probably move down to the, to the sideline. Cause like I said, I remember defensive coordinators, the ones that I've had, they like, they like, they like to cut you out. They like to, they like to know what you see, what you see. And all players are cut that. Yeah, you got to cut that. I remember the only coordinated I had that was in the, in the booth was Jim Vickarilla. And, and Jim was, you know, he had the coaches on the sideline, they kind of coached whatever, but Jim Joss was on the sideline and Emmett, Emmett was on the sideline. So yeah. All right. Let's go to one more thing. Hurts said yesterday. And I, Hugh, I, I want curious. I want you to listen to this and everyone to listen to this. I wonder if you had the same takeaway I did hearing it. Here's Hurts. Yes. When I asked about his role, running the football, mixed him with this new scheme. Here's, here's John on all that. Yeah. I think for my, um, my career, my approach on it, especially as it's going on and the changes continue to, it's going and doing what I'm

4:09asked to do. And, and really trying to understand what the goal is, what the objective is. I want to execute. So, um, I don't know how things will look. I don't know what the flow will be. But I think I'm excited about, you know, having a North Star and coach, you know, telling us what the intends on doing and how he wants to attack. And so, um, you know, the game can go a number of different ways. I've always played the game to win. And I think all of that is a part of building in game chemistry with the new unit, new, um, a new team, you know, new, new, uh, scheme, everything. Here, the question was about him and how, how much he'll run in this due office. Did you, did you hear it the way I did the way I heard that was, I'll do it if Sean Paul says, if his knee, if his knee did, and specifically what I'm, he said what I'm asked to do. That, that sounded to me like Sean, to Sean, to Sean, if you want me to run, you, you call me to run.

5:09Otherwise, I, the way I heard it was, he's not going to run just to run. If they call a quarterback design run, he will run the play. But I, I don't know if we're getting as many off schedule scrambles as, as we used to, what, what did, how did you hear that? You know what, Joe, when you, when you say like that, I, I get what, I pick up what you're putting down. It's, it's, and I guess I look at it differently than the way you're looking at it. It's like, I feel like, and I want to put words in my view, you're looking at it more so that he's not going to improvise. You're almost like, his running will, if Sean wants him to run, call, I run, call a quarterback running, I'll run. But if you don't call it, I'm not running as much. But see, I look at it more so him trying to play initially in the structure of the offense. Because that, that right now, that's what we're talking about. We're talking about the fact that Jayla's learning a new offense and he's trying to learn a new oasis of this new offense. So in order for him to have success, maybe initially you run it the right, the right way. You know,

6:11you run it the way that it's, it's designed. Now, I think that there's going to be some opportunity there as the season progresses for him to improvise a little bit. But I think initially, had to be able to run it the right way. Yeah, I, I, I, that's one of those. I, I don't know how that looks until we get to Sunday. I, I, I just, I mean, we're all recklessly speculating at this point. Yeah, I mean, I could picture the offense and the kind of the bones of it because we see so much like it in the NFL. But I, I'm struggling to picture how often and how effectively Jayla will run. I hope it's, you know, pretty often. And I hope it's obviously very effective because he used to be great at it. And last year, he just didn't do it much. So we'll say that, I just found that answer really interesting. Let's go to Marcus who, um, Marcus on the board, it says, can I talk to Ike about Jayla and her? What's up, Marcus? Hey, how you guys doing? What's up, man? I'm just, I'm getting a little sick of this, uh, excuse this thing for Jayla and her throughout the time. And I'm gonna be wrong. I'm a, I'm a big Philadelphia Eagles fan, right? And Ike, you play, and I had a question for you, right? Because I heard you guys tone in on, you know, he's, he has to get

7:16adjusted to the play call or calling plays from not on the sideline, right? Ike, when Doddovan was playing, right? The Doddovan just adjust to, uh, you know, to the game flow or how did that go? Because I just feel like we, we sometimes we tend to get Jayla and excuses to not play good. And last time I checked, that's what he gets paid for, right? So it's just and be our leader on the field. Totally, but there, there isn't adjustment period. There's an adjustment period. But he gets paid very well. He gets paid handsomely and that, that's the thing that, that a lot of people, you know, they don't, they don't understand gets paid way more than Ike did. Yeah, he got, he, a listen, I was a beast. Well, guys, it could be that. So I, so I, my question really quick though is that, that don't even have to adjust like at what point and like, I asked that. Hey, this is just a thing. I asked that. I asked that. When you asked it, yes, he had the, there's an adjustment when it comes to NFL. And especially when you talk about the fact that Jayla's running a new offense, that's not an excuse. That, that's the fact. That's the fact he's running a new offense. There's new nuances in his offense. And he has to adjust to the nuance. Yeah. Well, and there's 21 teams with new coordinators this year, right? So it's, when more than half the league has a new coordinator, good call Marcus and good question right there. Yeah. It definitely, it throws that whole, that excuse, reason, whatever. It doesn't hold the same. Nobody wants to hear. Like, you know what it is, man? And this is where I respect fandom. It's, it's, it's, it's not based in logic. I mean, that's, that's the fact. It's just not, sometimes it's what not. No, it's not because for the most part, most fans feel like

9:27you make the money that you make, you should be able to do this that a third. It doesn't work like that. Well, okay, but that's, it is, isn't that a reasonable expectation? You're paid to be one of the better players. Well, it's, it's, it's illogical in the sense that there's an adjustment period. And that's fit, that's fair. There you see, you know what I'm saying? There's an adjustment period. But people feel like, because Jayla makes $60 million, that $60 million automatically makes you should know the offense, like right away. It shouldn't, but by the end of the year, yeah, yeah, you should see some progress. Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's crazy to ask by the end of the season. His performance compared to the other quarterbacks be somewhere in line with his seller. I do not disagree with that. What were you see? Probably now, you think he's 11, maybe 10 to 12 in salary for quarterbacks. Something that range, right? So, do not disagree with that. So he, to me, he needs to look like one of the 10 to 12 best quarterbacks by the time the season ends. And if he's 20, we have a problem. Yeah, I mean, I do not disagree with that. But it's one of those things where it's still an adjustment, but in fans mind, it's like, hey, you make such,

10:29such a amount of money. You should be able to do that. That's that the reality. Agreed. I agree. Yeah, we should have asked that guy's thoughts on Hugh Douglas. Damn, sure. It's like, you know what? Pretty good player talks to hosts. He's no like Reese Spartan dog. Sparty. I, you know, my favorite part was that we got through the whole call. He talked to us. 11:30damn dog, I ain't later in the day. Right. Once in a while this happened, I pull an eight hour shift. No, not even that once in a while. This happens at like 130 and you that you kind of say, you kind of see that, but it's a left turn. Yeah, it's, it's the morning and neither one of us work an eight hour shift. So what do you talk about? But it's cool. I mean, I didn't, I didn't have a problem with that. Now to be fair, you both played defense for the Eagles. Like, there, it's not like it. There's no connection. No, that's some connection. Like, you were teammates on the Eagles defense. When you see man, I think together, you don't look like him at all. We do not, because I'm wider and I like much taller. We look like what's that? The, uh, what's those ghost? They used to be with Casper. The friendly ghost with a dad, the tall skinny ghost. Then they had the roton. That's what it looked like. What were their names? I forgot what their names were. I haven't thought about the, but you remember Casper? Yeah. One of the things that they want to ask you guys, and I could be wrong, which is why I want to ask, did it give you kind of hesitation about the Eagles defense? Because it seemed like the Patriots offense

13:31during the joint practice and stuff did pretty well against the defense. And yesterday looking at him, I'm struggling. I know it's a game versus joint practices, but kind of wanted to get you guys thoughts on that. It's a good question. So I didn't think of it last. What did you say now? Say it again. So he's saying that the Eagles defense seemed to struggle against the Patriots offense in the joint practice. But last night, the C-Ox defense shut down the Patriots offense. Does it give us any pause? So, Glenn, I didn't think about it last night. I did think about it during the joint practices. I just, I think we just have an assumption that Eagles defense will be great, great. And it will be very good. I mean, Vic Fanzio, they're going to have a good defense. But I, I think you could be on a something, right? We have a question mark at linebacker with Nicobie not here. And we'll see how good Jihad is, you know, in, in filling in. And he was, I think safety is a major question. I mean, it is, it's, we'll see how good McCubes. They lost playing the chip. They're going to start apps. And then the other thing, Glenn, I thought last night is, you know, we're excited about Reek Wollen. It doesn't seem like the C-Ox misrequollen at all. Like they let him go and they didn't, they don't, it doesn't matter to them.

14:32Well, the reality of it is this, it's, it's matchups, right? At the end of the day, when you talk about certain teams, they match up better with other teams. And, and I think that what you're seeing last night is the fact that familiarity, I think kind of played into that game a lot more, even though there was new pieces when you talk about dubs and AJ being out there. The defense align for the C-Ox, it's fairly intact. And they had a game plan that they probably were familiar with with the way that Drake may play. You, you see what I'm saying? Because the last game they played in was the Super Bowl, right? So now they're going to probably take some of that game plan from the Super Bowl and implement that into this game. Not a whole lot, but, but, but probably the majority of it. So what you actually saw last night to me was a little bit more familiarity with that team as opposed to another. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, that can be true. And I do think the Eagle defense is going to be good. It just gave me a little hesitation. I know it's different. It's been game practices.

15:32And go where you're talking about previously. My only main concern is, and he, I think you may agree with me on this end, is that what Joe and Doug Struggle, again, it's learning new offense, but that puts a lot of pressure on the defense. And I think the worst thing for defense is being on the field too much, because then causes a lot of more chances for errors and miscommunications, everything. Oh, I agree. That was the playoff game last year, right? Against San Francisco, we couldn't get up, we couldn't sustain dry. It's got good call, Glenn. But I will say this, with this defense, knowing what they know, that they're probably, they're probably gearing up to play a lot, because the offense is going to struggle. I mean, you kind of like as a defender, you kind of know what's probably going to be the case. You know what I mean? So they're preparing for it. All right, to our caller's point. And I don't think he's sounding the alarms to the defense will not be good. It will be good, right? With Vic Fangio, with Carter, Davis, the corners, they're going to have a good defense. But I think we just have set out loud a lot, like almost like a reflex, one of the best defense in the NFL.

16:32Yeah. Or we, and again, this matters to an extent of how good the offense is, right? If they're the seventh best defense, that's really good. But if they're the best defense, that's a different level. You know what I mean? That's like, yeah. Are we sure they're a top five defense? Let me just throw this at you. Texans, they look like they're a top five defense, right? Seattle's, we just saw it last night. They word that last year. Denver, the Rams, the Rams, the Miles Garrett, the Ravens, I'm just, I think the Ravens defense would really good. So here's what I'll say. I think that you know who might be sneaky good. Dallas. That good though? That's right. Dallas might be a top 10 defense. Okay. I think I'm very confident he goes well with top 10 defense. Top six. Two years ago, they were the best. That there is, we saw it in the playoffs last year. There is a difference between that defense two years ago, and the defense last year. The defense two years ago is not letting Brock Purti and the zombie nine are scored 27 points. They just wouldn't. That's not me. I mean, they were the zombie nineers. No, you know what I like about this defense,

17:35and it's gonna sound strange, is that there is, when you think about the guys that potentially can put pressure on the quarterback, you don't know. And I think in some odd way, that's an advantage because think about the last couple of years of this defense and how well they played with not consistent edge pressure. And maybe, Jaylic's about to take a big lead. Yeah, it feels like he is. And it feels like Jaylic's hunt, the way that he's locked in is gonna be that dude, that's gonna be that consistent pass, Russia for you. So I'm excited about that. I'm excited about the fact that Jaylic's hunt, when you listen to him talk from his first year to now, his confidence has jumped tremendously. So you look at him and what he was able to do, he led the lead, he led this team in Saks and Intercepts last year. It's crazy, so when you think about the type of player that big fan's year wants or wants on the field, it feels like Jaylic's hunt fits that mold. And he's gonna allow him to, you know, he's gonna lie in the play,

18:36then do his thing. I agree, I mean, there's a path where there are a top one, two, three defense. I mean, they have that chance. But there are some questions. Linebacker, I have a question about Nicolby and I think safety's a major question. And the recoil thing, I don't know, I mean, we'll see. We'll see how good recoil. And it is interesting, Seattle's like, yeah, whatever. I mean, recoil has gone over just as good. Tanner in fillies up, what's up Tanner? Cool, what's going on guys? Tanner, what's up man? Oh, nothing much. I was a generational hate watch last night. Drake may need to work on his subway to order taking skills after all the meatball mariners and ham grinders and turkey subs all the way all down the field. That was beautiful. Oh my God. Now, I won't, I'm not gonna, watch an AJ go down. I didn't want to see that because I don't watch injuries on any players. But like, I wish he stayed in the game,

19:37but kept the 28 yards and sat through that. Like watching his face all last night was funny. Watching him on the sideline, just having a state calm and collected because you know he was seething that whole game. Watching JSN move. Oh, of course he was. And he was supposed to be the story of the game. And then by the end, he's not even in there. And the quarterback he wanted to play with is throwing up all over himself. That was awesome. That was awesome. It was, it was beautiful. And Matt Collins being the first former equal to get the first catch of the game at rather than AJ Brown. That was the highlight of my night. Yeah, that was great. It was as good of an opening from a hate loss perspective as we're gonna get. Do you have an update for us, Tanner, on your, on your Madden franchise with Hugh Douglas? Yeah, I haven't been able to call in for the last couple of days because I've been in the war room because Hugh Douglas has decided he wants to ask for more money because he's unhappy with his contract.

25:43when Netflix, it's a Netflix game, opens it up tonight. Hugh, what do you think of what each team did? So the Niners have been there for a week trying to get themselves acclimated, all that. The Rams just got there yesterday. The Rams are considering this a business trip. They're in there out. And there's actually some science behind it in their mind. They apparently sent some staffers over to Australia last year to kind of gauge this. And they think they can almost avoid the jet lag by getting in day of and playing and getting the right out of there. What do you think? And who did this right? The Niners to get there a week ahead? The Rams to get there yesterday. You know what to your point? I've heard people say that before. It's like because it takes your body a while to adjust to the time change. So that's smart because we were talking about when we get ready to go to London. We probably won't be messed up with our time change until that what we get that we leave Tuesday. Right Tuesday night. Yeah. So it probably won't be to win the authority where it really affects us because the time that we go to work is different than the time we normally go to work. So you think it's going to benefit the Rams? Just going to lay? I think so. I think so.

29:47Well, and statistically, last year they weren't good. They just had a lot of turnover. So they were able to get off the field. But the team is moving the ball in them the whole year. So I mean, you might be right. And they lost CJGJ. And every time a team loses that guy, they seem to get worse. And then he goes to, seems to get better. So I could see that. All right. So bold predictions. You didn't go as bold this year as you usually do. I will say that. I mean, it's pretty bold. I think you kind of talked your tail this year. Yeah. No, I mean, I think that.
