She was a close friend in my heart, but she was also family. She was my sister-in-law. She unfortunately passed from a car accident, so it wasn't something that we were prepared for. Shortly after we got the news, I was put in charge of helping with the funeral arrangements and everything, and just looking at the overall cost, it didn't feel right for me to ask the family that's grieving for money. That's what made me go to GoFundMe,

and it just became a network of people that were willing to come together to help. GoFundMe is the world's number one fundraising platform trusted by over 200 million people. You really do miss out on the opportunity to help people if you don't ask. When you actually put your heart, your soul into it, and you're like, this is the reason I'm doing it, it helps a lot. Start your GoFundMe today at GoFundMe.com. GoFundMe.com. News talk breakfast with Anton Savage. In association with air. You stand for keen. I found you're a pay gap. I ease with me in studio. What's your first job as a public facing? It was. I was a Christmas temp at a well-known shop. OK, very good. So you got to see people when they were really stressed. People at 11.59 trying to buy the candle last minute because they've knocked out the Christmas present on Christmas Eve. You bet. Was it a valuable experience? That actually was.

And similar to yourself, you see the best and the worst of some people. I can't like to apologize in advance for any soup that has spilled this weekend. He's probably in bed. So I'm probably getting away with that one now. Without getting any blowback on it. Some of the stories that are knocking around this morning, Jennifer, the ban on the use of e-scouters by Andre Jean's is in force now. Yes, well, I mean, so just four weeks after the regulations on helmets and hyvids, now there's a ban on under 18s. But transport ministry says compliance with the new measures is very low regards to the helmets and hyvids. So I guess it remains to be seen whether under 18s really stop using them. Well, I mean, I laugh at this because it was a fellow scoot who'd pass me when I was driving in this morning fully dressed in black, no lights, no hyvids, no helmet, no, so. So are you terrifying when you see it on the roads, isn't it? A particularly, as we're heading into winter now, and it becomes more of a challenge, policing this is going to be the issue. They're not going to police this, are they? It's going to be very, very tough. I mean, they're already very stretched with a lot of road policing. This is another thing to police.

There are the seizures of e-scouters has risen last year on 2024. But there's a lot of them out there on the roads, and it still remains to be seen whether people comply. They're already not complying with the helmets and hyvids. So why would they comply with this? Well, hopefully, if they're under 18, that means there should be a parental influence and parents should be doing what they need to do there. The topic of discussion in our editorial this morning, normally there's one item that kind of stimulates us and gets us going. But it was the issue of the Asian Hornet Nest in Cork, and it was more to do with the fact that there is an Asian Hornet somewhere in Cork right now with a little backpack that is tracking him in the hope that it'll bring him back to where the Asian Hornet Nest is, always like effectively as spy trying to track it down. If it wasn't so serious, we'll be going to funny. Yes, it will be fascinating to think of like tiny robot Asian Hornet bringing the researchers back to Asian Hornet. With a Cork accent on this. But it's actually quite terrifying, something I didn't realize until I started

reading about this myself. It's not that they're competing with the bees for food, so that they're actually praying on the bees. They're eating the bees. They're eating the bees and other pollinates. You can watch it on video. They sit at the edge of the hive, and they decapitate the bee and bring the rest of the body back to feed the queen, which is nice for the queen, but not good for the bee. Absolutely, terrifying. One nest can eliminate 11 kilograms of pollinator insects. Can you imagine how many bees, another pollinator insects that is? Terrified. It's really important they go and find the nest because it would have a huge impact on crops, on bee products, on anything that's pollinated by bees or other insects. It's critically important. Insects love to sting me. I am considering driving to Cork and offering myself up as additional specialized bait. It might be the key idea. It's down in the ring as giddy areas. I do keep an eye out for either the interloper bee or indeed anyone else who can find it because they're really keen to make sure that the female does not survive the winter.

A total ban of commercial sunbeds, which is something that's been talked about for a long time, would breach EU rules the government has warned? Yes, under the low voltage directive, which is a pretty interesting angle to take on it. So freedom of information request by the Sunbed Association, which is an industry lobby group, found that a policy advisor brought up this directive. So it's a directive that regulates electrical products, make sure they're safe in a number of ways, including radiation, funnily enough. So it caps the radiation at, or the UV radiation at a certain level, but that level is equivalent to the midday Mediterranean sun. So it's still pretty high. Yeah. And the Sunbed Association is saying, you can't ban sunbeds because of this directive. So the government are now saying, we may be trying to restrict this provision of the services rather than the devices themselves. So obviously, you have to look at the reason why we're doing this. People with skin cancer on the rise, we know that there's a lot of people who get very seriously ill, some of them die from using sunbeds.

It's kind of an interesting take on the law. I suppose they're trying to protect their industry, which they say is regulated. And both at the same time, as the person who is the sunbed at home, are the person who uses the sunbeds irresponsibly. They're the ones that need to be targeted. Absolutely. The HSE warns that using a sunbed before your 35 increases your risk of melanoma by 75%. And we know the skin cancer is one of the fastest growing and most common cancers in Ireland. There's precedent for these sorts of bands. There's some countries that have banned them. Australia, for example. And they did see reduction in melanoma, reduction in other skin cancers, thousands of lives saved, and importantly, millions of health care costs saved as well. They take sunscreen, sun care, very serious skin care over there, and they're getting the results on it. Finally, sometimes you'll see a story like this coming out of the UK, and it's there as red meat. It's Elf and safety go mad. But they're banning, are they've cancelled the extreme conquer competition?

I wasn't aware of it, but why should I grab a pitchfork and get angry over this? Yes, so a no-hold barred conquer competition has been told actually you've showed bar some holds. They haven't anything goes approach to conquer, so apparently rassling your opponent to the ground, stomping on their conquer with your feet, even using your teeth to destroy a chestnut, which seems impossible, is permitted under these drills. This is a bit extreme, literally, by the title. I mean, the conquer, can you have it in your hand? I'm doing a visual thing, which doesn't work on radio. But you flick your conquer at your opponent's conquer, and if your conquer breaks, then I mean, biting is really fair, isn't it? Well, I mean, the last person who defeated the reigning champion did so by rassling into the ground and apparently allegedly chipping his tooth in the process. So they really mean no-holds-barred. The conquerors are just an accessory to everything else, it seems. Yes, attempting to crush your conquer, which your feet is called stompsies. Today, I learned. Yes, it's a good word to use, and we should use it in general discussion later on. That's been banned as well. So when they say it has been banned on the grounds of health and safety, do they say whose health and safety rules are being implemented?

Because it just sounds like they're trying to get a bit of publicity for their silly event. Well, now, there are other events that were also kind of cancelled due to health and safety red tape, as it were. So you have to evade liaises with a bunch of people. Police, fire, ambulance, transport authority, and a safety advisory group. And so some other local events that have run afile of these things as well. This is a country that allows you to roll a wheel of cheese down a hill and follow us. I mean, I think that it's a... It's a country of extremes. It is, but not extreme conquerors this year. Not extreme conquerors, certainly not. Well, anyway, look, we forgot to bring the conquerors so that you and I could have a game, which would be... The shame. It's a shame, because again, that would make for brilliant radio, Jennifer... I'll beg after that. Thank you very much for joining us. Newstalk Breakfast with Anton Savage In association with air.
