Hello, dolphins, talk fans, and welcome to another episode with Dave Hyde and Marissa Marino. We are so excited to be back to you on this Thursday. We've got a lot to talk about. But first Dave, how are you? I'm good. Ready for week two to kick off. Week one left us a little disheartened, disappointed, I don't know. But we'll see what happens now. Nice, easy game in San Francisco. Oh, the easiest, different time zone change flying across the country, playing against the 49ers who looked incredible week one. It's going to be great, easy. Maybe there's still tired from Australia.
Yeah. There's always that chance. We can bank on that. Well, before we get started, make sure you follow Dave on Twitter at Dave Hyde Sports, and subscribe to his substack for all the latest at Dave Hyde. Before we get into it, Dave, last time when we talked, I had asked you if you had a guess on how many passing yards Malik Willis is going to have against the Raiders. Now, although you didn't win, you beat me because you picked 215. I picked 214 and you thought I boxed you out, but he ended with 220. So that's pretty good. Both of us were pretty close for having really no basis for what he could do in the game. That's both of us did pretty good. We did pretty well. Actually, I had four people guess right on the money, but when it comes to you and I, you win. I want to know. I want to know. Okay, good.
Good. I like to win. I do like to win. There you go. No prize for it, but you won. You get bragging rights. All right, Morrison. I'm sure you've, you've structured the question this time. So you've done a little homework, though. I'm sure. Yes, and we do, I have done the homework. And so like you mentioned, week one didn't go as many of us hoped. I think we were all hanging your hat on that might be our like one win of the season. And we get it out of the way. So while it was not a surprise, it was still disappointing. So a couple of things with that, the O line, do you feel like it was as bad as the five sacks given up suggest or did Malik Willis hold on to the ball on these plays way too long because I actually saw a stat that he had the second most amount of time to hold on to the ball behind Jaden Daniels. Yeah, no, you look at you. Go back and look at those sacks and he's looking downfield to throw to somebody and, you know, the easy second.
Here's my take on Malik Willis's game. You could take it however you want. He made some plays that showed you who he can be, you know, a sideline past to Douglas, over the middle to Douglas, touch past the H and at the end though, the 14 yard run that, you know, we just haven't seen for years with the dolphins. So you saw the plays that he can make. You saw plays that he needs to learn from and, you know, the five sacks, four of them probably are on him to some degree. Now he's looking downfield, obviously not seeing anything. And that gets into a young receiving corps and new offense and all that stuff. But I think those are, those are correctable mistakes, very correctable. And so I look at more of the plays that he did make. Now he had a bad interception. He forced to throw and that sort of changed the complexion of the game.
He didn't take out the steam out of the offense. But the sacks as you bring up, he had a lot of time to throw this game. Yeah, no, he definitely did. It's interesting when he ran in for that touchdown, I called my dad and I was like, to what could never, to what could never. And then literally like the next sequence, he threw an interception and my dad called me and he said, to what could do that? To what could do that? Well, there's, that was a bad interception. You know, that's one you just throw away or there was a check down he could have gone to. He's trying to force something that isn't there. And again, let's remember this was his sixth start. We think of him as been in Green Bay for a couple years in Tennessee before that and he's sounds like this veteran quarterback, but he's got a learning curve to it all too.
And you know, I came out of that game thinking, okay, I'm seeing him make some plays that show you the talents up there. Now can you get rid of the, you know, the plays we're talking about now, the sacks and the interception. And of course, covering it all is a very young receiving core and young talent around them trying to grow up too. Yeah, absolutely. Well, and just kind of touching base on this. And I think some people talked about this after watching week one. Do you think not only the dolphins, but many teams need to play their starters more in preseason because it seemed like a lot of the mistakes Miami made were just not having enough reps prior to week one. Yeah, that's a great point. And that gets to, I mean, it gets to the modern NFL. I mean, how do you want to go into week one health completely healthy and brusty or do
you want to go into it completely ready to play, but maybe you're banged up at a couple of a, and a lot of teams are saying that we'll, we'll learn on the run and it's a long season and we'll use the first two games as an official preseason. Now, if I'm this dolphin regime and I'm looking at the Raiders as, you know, he can take a lot of pressure off you for what's coming up ahead and no one will talk about Owen 17 and, and, you know, you're playing the 49ers. The chiefs, Vikings on the road and the Bengals. I might have had them a little prettier than I would have normally in a, in a, in a normal season. Just, first of all, they're a really young team. They probably need some work. But, but second of all, the opponent I thought might have, get into your point, they seem a young team playing two young at times and maybe the preseason would have helped them.
Yeah, I 100% agree with that. So, this was an interesting thing to me, Devon Hane, halfly had preached in the offseason. He was even quoted to say like, Devon's going to have 40 to 45 touches, which is a little egregious, but in all, I have to carry him back to the locker room at the end of the game. But, what were your thoughts on his playcalling? Devon only had 11 carries and he was targeted only five times in the passing game. Yeah, I think they played, I mean, they played the score a little too much of, of, of, we're behind. We got to, we got to throw, we got to get the ball into your best player's hands as much as you can. And, and 11 carries for him and that game was, was too little. Yeah. And, and, you know, he went to get 36 yards so, so you could say, well, the running game wasn't going well, get it going, you know, there's the, there's the guy who's proven, he's really the one proven playmaker you got and, and, and I, I would think the, the
fear would be overusing him, not underusing him. And, and, and I, and I think they probably came out of that game and they look at, um, their game plan and what they want to do and what they actually did. And I think they were chasing the score a little, they were playing the score a little too much when, when they should just stuck to their gun and said, um, we wanted him to have 20 touches again or whatever, whatever the number is, I would guess around 20, 20 to 25 that 11 carries is, is too few. Yeah. Well, hopefully we'll see more of him against the 49ers. You know McCaffery is going to be showcased for sure. So we shall see, before we move forward again, Dave, time to pay the bills, go to cowsheet.com and use promo code Dolphinstalk, a new football season, bring some big questions who makes the playoffs, who wins their division, who takes home the title on cow she America's number one prediction market platform, it lets you trade those predictions in a live market. All right, bills are paid back to business. Dave Caleb Douglas was a nice surprise in this game and he played very well.
Actually, he was listed as an option for best rookie opening game. What do you think of Douglas and some of the other Miami Dolphins rookies like Rodriguez, Proctor and Johnson? Yeah, that's in that way. You want to see if you're the Dolphins. You know, they're obviously building with youth lay in the foundation with this thirteen member rookie class and you want the production. You want you don't want like last year, we're going to play them a lot and they play them a lot, but you never really saw anything that said, okay, this guy can be really good. One of the few of these guys right off the bat you're seeing, okay, they're producing now and down the line they could really develop into something special and Rodriguez 14 tackles and Douglas, what in the first half was five catches for $90,000. Yeah, yeah. You go down the list and Proctor had some really nice plays and some plays he's going to
learn from a couple twists in there. The Raiders got him, but that's part of being a rookie and playing on a line especially. Half had an interception. I mean, there is enough production out of the rookie class right at the start that you said, okay, this could be a really good rookie class. Yeah, I think it is definitely shaping up to be that. So we had a couple of things that were a little alarming. I think we knew, but alarming to you, what was more of so Miami special teams overall or their defense overall? Yeah, to me, the defensive line, the middle of the line, or well, you throw in the edge rushers, I didn't, they got problems there. They don't have an edge rusher and you knew that coming into the season. That was sort of the one place where they're scrambling, trying to, they're signing people
and hoping somebody rises out of the, you know, the nothing of the positions offering right now. But the surprise to me, the surprise disappointment to me was they got run on pretty well. Really, the tone of the game was set by the Raiders running game and their offensive line and Gentry being able to do what they wanted. I think the Raiders averaged 7.6 or 7 yards of carry in the first half. And you know, considering, you know, you got Jordan Brooks run regas, you got, you know, not a proven defensive interior, but guys who played last year, you know, I thought, especially on the defense, where you don't, you don't know what you have in the secondary or at the edge rush. I thought the strengths would be the interior of the defense and it won that a game one. Yeah, it'll be interesting because the stats that I saw, you know, going up against the
49ers, Christian McCaffrey had a hell of a game, but he wasn't even their top producer at running back. Their number two guy was. And so between the two of them, the amount of yards that they did and what you said of the Gentry would happen. I mean, it leaves a little cause for concern. I posted on my Twitter the famous quote of our defense was as useful as a screen door on a submarine. It's kind of what it felt like everything was getting through. So to be determined how they ship up a shape up for the next game, but Miami versus San Francisco this weekend, it doesn't get any easier. Even if Miami loses versus the 49ers, what do you need to see Sunday to come away believing that this team is moving in the right direction? Pro football is back. You mentioned the special teams. They gave up a 45-50 yard kickoff return where the Dolphins kicker had to make the tackle. Both of those set up Raiders touchdowns gave them great field position set up. Start there, certainly on an individual basis. Again, the rookies you're looking at, the young guys, can they build off what week one was about? Now, they're going up in weight class too. The Raiders, as we all said, could have been their best chance as an opponent for a win. The 49ers might have had the best win out of week one, whipping the Rams as they did. Now, that was a little odd being in Australia and the different traveling that each team took, travel ideas. But I think the 49ers might have come out of the week as everybody sat up and said,
okay, they could be a lot better than we thought. I mean, I'm looking for progress. I don't... This isn't a game you're going to say, a boy they better win or else. Progress could be competing and progress could be just looking at individuals and say, okay, this guy looks like he's getting better. Yeah, absolutely. Do you have a score prediction for this game? You know, when you were talking earlier, I'm really pretty... I'm kind of stayed away from thinking about what the score could be. Because anyway, if I... I'm off top of my head, I'm going to say 36 to 14, 49ers. What do you think? What do you think? Is that too... I mean, I was going 31-10, so I can... Same idea. Yeah.
I don't have much, too much faith. I mean, again, love my team, but realism is where I try to live in the re-out, that re-out. Let's face it. Well, think about it, Marissa. The week one, as I said, the 49ers might have been the surprise winner of the week. From a standpoint, they blew out a team everybody's picking to the go. And who was the... Maybe the second surprise was achieved so the dolphin gets next and beating the Broncos. So our scores, I think, are reflective of not just where the dolphins are, but the teams are playing, too. Oh, 100%. Okay, so you talked about it, but we're starting this week. We are about to enter a brutal stretch until the end of October. Do you think... Do you see anywhere a win before Halloween with knowing we've got 49ers, chiefs, Vikings, bangles, jets? All those different questions and looks here.
There it is. There's your landing spot. The jets will be favored. This one's in the metal ants, right? Yeah, so the jets are going to be favored, but if of those opponents, I mean, look at it. I mentioned the 49ers and the chiefs. The Vikings came back to beat Green Bay with Carson Wentz's report. And then the bangles took care of Tampa Bay. You can't pick the dolphins to beat any of those teams. So the jets won, too. Now they beat a bad Titan team, but they won. And I think of 2019. The dolphins got blown out in their first four games. The total was like 163 to 26, something like that in points.
And we were all like, where are they ever going to win a game? This team is going relentless. And then they ended up winning five games. So it'll be interesting to see how this team holds together and how half-leak can he keep developing them to the point in the second half of the season? Or somewhere, maybe week five, but they keep developing. Yeah, yeah, they're going to need to. It's going to be a long road, Dave. So it's kind of a different topic real quickly. Another one of our people on Dolphins Talk actually mentioned this. OJ McDuffee today on his Twitter. There's been a lot of changes to the Hall of Fame process made this week. And now there's only 28 voters. Every city won't have a representative. And there's just many changes. What do you think of these changes? Or do you think it's an over-reaction and too much change too fast? Well, I didn't like the policy before.
And I haven't talked to anybody at the Hall of Fame. Actually, I'm calling up someone from the Hall of Fame when we're getting here on a different matter. But maybe I'll talk to them about it. They had to do something between the whole Bella Check controversy of him not getting in last year. And then there's some of the things make no sense to me. For instance, in Richmond, when you look at his portfolio. And compared to some of the guys who are getting a vote at above him, it makes no sense. Now, if you want to say Richmond was in a Hall of Fame or then take that argument. But, his credentials are better than some of the guys who are ahead of him right now. And so, something had to be done. Hopefully, this takes care of some of the problems. They shrunk it in half, basically, right?
The number of voters. I got to see an action before I can really pass judgment on it. Because it is one of the more secretive Hall of Fame. They'd get in a room and they talk. And I mean, the baseball Hall of Fame is like a thousand voters. Yeah. And everybody's very public about their ballots. The basketball hall, everybody gets in the basketball Hall of Fame. Name me the most controversial person not in the basketball Hall of Fame. I mean, everybody gets in it. So, the football Hall of Fame has done it differently. And now they're going to a smaller group, which, you know, I got to see an action to talk to some more people about it. But they had to do something. They've done what they think were remedy it. So, let's see how it plays out. We shall see.
Well, before we wrap up, just outside of the dolphins, I know you talked about, you know, what Kansas City was able to do, 49ers. Were there any other teams around the league that impressed you kind of the most this last week? I mean, for me personally, I know that it was against the Panthers, but the Bears, I mean, the numbers that they put up on there. I think the Bears are going to be following up from last season, something special, this season to look at. But any team that stood out to you? Well, it was stood out to me in a different way as New England. You know, Drake May didn't have, now he's going to get Seattle's defense. And so that would be one. The other one that, I don't know if they stood out, but Buffalo, going to Houston, Houston was supposed to have a great defense and game ones can be weird. So, I'm not making any conclusions. But Buffalo looked like the exact same team to me as last year,
or year before, in the year before, a lot of offense, a lot of offense, and the defense set, you're going to say, okay, can that win? A lot of Josh Allen. Now, DJ Moore had a nice game for them, and I thought they overpaid for him, but maybe they had to overpay if he can deliver that. And then the defense made a play at the end of the game to win it, okay? But I'm sort of curious to see who Buffalo is this year. If you're Buffalo, you say, we had a nice game one win. We go to Houston, took apart their defense, made a play at the end of the off, on, yeah, made a play at the end of defense to win it, and our new guy, DJ Moore had a nice game. So, we'll see if Buffalo's different this year. Yeah, well, we will find out tonight with them playing the Lions at their brand new stadium. I said earlier when you and I were talking off air, I wish them nothing but the worst.
And I hope I stand by that statement. All right, Dave, well, this has been great. Before we get out of here, any final words on this upcoming Dolphins 49ers game? Patience, I think that's what we're going to say a lot this year. Rarely do you hear a coach say it's not about winning and losing, but you understand where half these coming from on weeks like this where it's not about winning and losing? Yeah, really is about. I mean, I was talking to my dad about it. I said, really, he's like, I think, I'm going to turn probably at half time, put Red Zone on, because I'll be so frustrated with this team, I'm sure. And I said, yeah, for me, I'm just trying to go into it, looking at, you know what, I want to look at player development. I know we're probably not going to win, but I want to see, like, how are we progressing? Because I feel like all of us at this point, that's what it's about, right? Try to leave the frustration on the side and say, okay, are these players developing,
looking at Jacob Rodriguez again, what he happens, what he'll end up doing, seeing how Malik progresses and all of these players. So I guess that's really where we're all sort of at at this point is just because. Yeah, I mean, you were yesterday. Yeah, Malik, I mean, he's the number one question, right? No matter how you address the season, he's the number one question. And do they get to the end of the season, say they got someone special, do they get, we got a quarterback who can take us to eight and eight. They're going to have to make a decision on him. So to your point, every game or every, you know, what I usually do is I break the game into four quarters, just like a regular game. I break into four quarters. Okay, the first quarter, how they play, second quarter, third quarter, fourth quarter. I got that from Pat Riley who would break NBA games into 20 game clumps and before making any conclusion. And that's where I'm going with this.
How will this look after the first quarter of the season and does he improve each quarter after? Yeah, absolutely. Well, we appreciate everybody for watching again.
