Even a marching bandwreck up call it 555 and 55 seconds. Hit it! When you need a team that will do whatever it takes on game day, it matters where you stay. Hilton, for this day. This is the Chris Carlin podcast. This is live morning's it in on ESPN New York and streaming live on YouTube. Wednesday, Wednesdays are for winners as we know. Well, in the Yankees of the big winners from last night, even more so Carlin than you and I, everything went what went right for them last night. And Cam Schletler on the mound. If I'm in Boston now, I have such a fear of this guy. He's unstoppable, especially against them.
They didn't have a prayer last night. And you combine Cam Schletler and Ben Rice. And there you go. A nine-nothing easy victory for the Yankees. Here is Schletler on the two of them. Yeah, I mean, we love it. You know, mid-round guys. Ben has excelled very well in this organization. You know, he was someone I knew. Well, I was in the minors of how well he was excelling. And again, it's great to be teammates with him. Have that comtability being from home. And, you know, he's been dominant all season. So it's it's it's very exciting to watch. And I'm glad he can go out there today and get his flowers. The two of them. First of all, with Schletler, I'm just so enjoying the notion about how much he himself, I think, is really trying to ramp up the Yankee Red Sock rivalry and get it back to levels where it should be. It hasn't been at that in a while. And last night is a night where this is someone from up there who is engaging with that fanbase and actively hammering them.
And then backing it up by sticking to them. Like if you're if you're Yankee purist, you can't have a better scenario. We took one of yours and made him ours. He's freaking Kylo Ren. I mean, he made him a bad guy and he's sticking it to you at every turn. Well, it's really their fault because according to Cam, people were talking smack about his family on social media. And in this day and age, that is enough. And I think honestly, I don't even know if that story's made up. It may not be true, but not even be true. Who cares? He's using it as juice. And you're right. He can back it up. I mean, he's just fantastic. It's not the eight scoreless that we saw last year in, you know, the closeout game of the wild card. But I mean, pretty dang close. Six and a third scoreless. Ten strikeouts. The fastball, the curveball. It was all working. The other thing too is it was so important to have a night like that offensively without judge because we sat here for the last couple of days.
Is he or isn't it? And really, he's the one that made that a conversation. I have not heard this, but I do want to catch a little bit of this from Boone. First of all, two different cuts about judge. Number one, on the decision to leave him off the wild card roster. You know, we had a non-conversation last night after the workout. He and I had a couple of the trainers and just I just felt like it wasn't quite ready to, you know, be what he needs to be for us. So hopefully we're able to advance and you know, these are valuable days as he, you know, gets closer to being a real option for us and hopefully, you know, be a part of it at some point moving forward when that is. I don't know, but just felt like it wasn't quite what he not quite ready yet. And it should be funny if Boone came in with like a black guy and a missing two. We had an honest conversation. It was very honest and my face is rearranged. And he's on the roster actually. Yeah, then there's a we sold him the team on the offensive outburst without more confident group.
But it's one game as much as tonight was a special night here in the Bronx and you could feel that energy was electric and so many guys played so well. You know, he enjoyed for a minute, but it's getting right back after it tomorrow, knowing that we'll have a chance to close it out, but it's one win. We got the blinders on and but it's a confident group and knowing that we can, if we play our game, we can beat anyone. I mean, and everything went right. I mean, not only Boone's decisions, the lineup was perfect. You're getting production early on from the bottom of the order. And well is coming in big and then Ben Rice kind of just took it over, but Ben Rice obviously was four for five two home runs, including a grand slam, a six RBI night for Ben Rice and you know, George Lumbard really was the story for a lot of the game until rice hit that that grand slam can ask for a better debut from him. Volpe looked good. You know, everything just Spencer Jones, like they all looked good. Everything about it. You know, they started a med Rosario. He was able to make a nice defensive play. Then they put Mac Man in it was like once they had the lead for defensive purposes.
It just all really worked out perfectly. Now we'll see tonight. Much different type of picture on the map. You know, Cam Schletler is your strikeout guy Max Fried, fantastic picture, but more of a ground ball picture. We'll see if the defense can hold up just before I follow up on that. Can we take a nine nothing game and I know what Boone is saying. Yeah. Can because to me we can't we take a nine nothing game and just kind of put to rest that the offense has to have judge in order to win. I think we can put that aside because as much as they missed him during that 50 game stretch, they did come back around enough. And yes, they're pitching kept them afloat. But when you have a night like last night and you're not treating Ben Rice like he is just a nice complimentary piece and you realize this is a guy that hits 40 home runs and can really change the dynamic of a game together. That's an opportunity to recognize. I had to put it this way. We may not need the guy and it's nice to have many amazing player and all of these things and he's the captain.
I get what he means, but it doesn't mean it's a debt sentence without him. Well, I would just say this too. I think that the bigger picture is that it doesn't mean that judge is now the one piece that the whole organization has to revolve around. Right. You have power and I just like know the Cody Beliger's the guys who've already established themselves in the league. I'm talking about homegrown Yankee guys who have been consistent and now in the postseason are showing you they can they can do it too. At least for now, but I think there's another part of this. Even if judge comes back. I don't know exactly what Yankee fans are expecting. He's been hurt for most of the year. He came back. It didn't look that great. He got hurt again. It's a calf. Those are tricky. They linger. Touch the Achilles never a great a great idea. Great sign. So I just don't know if Yankee fans. I don't say you've turned the page on judge for this postseason because hell, he could have the biggest moment yet. We have no idea what's going to happen. But I think you're looking at and saying he wasn't all that awesome when he came back. This lineup that they went with and that they're going with now could be good enough.
Here's my point for tonight. Going into tonight following up what you were saying before. And it relates to all of this. So not that they weren't going to be very weary of him as it was. But they obviously made mistakes against rice last night. Are they going to do that again? Are they going to let rice beat them again? My guess would be no. So if that's the case. Are we confident enough that everybody else is going to do enough offensively? I am. And that's why I say like I've seen enough collectively. Yeah, it's not just yes, rice drove in six. I get it. It collectively. It's the positions that they put them in. And if the red socks are pitching around him. And you're relying on somebody else to get it done. There's enough firepower there to get it done without judge. There's enough. I think. Yeah. See you're not even fully buying it. Yeah. You know, it's it's you know, if you're talking about winning. I mean, you're asking me today after they're coming off a nine nothing, you know, told them asking something of the red socks.
Would you if I had asked you that yesterday? Would you have said no? I didn't think so. They couldn't make the world series without him. I think Tampa. Really good. I think this is a temp is not good. Yeah. It's that the Yankees are. I never may have one more regular season games and they want to division get all. Yeah. When you look at a shorter series with the Yankee pitching, that's not. Yeah. Gonna have a positive enough effect to be able to get them through that. No, but at some point you have to score some runs. I mean, this is what we talked about all season. And whether or not the Yankees were going to have enough firepower. And you're right. If you're going to pitch a little more carefully to Ben Rice, then everyone else is going to have to pick it up last night. And everyone got involved. This is why this is going to get very tricky tricky here for me moving forward into the next series. I don't I do not want to let the captain force feed himself down my throat. If I manage it here. And I need to pretend it's for the best of everybody. It's not just for the best of the Yankees.
It was such a big move to me to not let him force his way on yesterday that if he's if he's on in the next round. There are no excuses. There's there's no nothing. I don't want to hear anything about well. He's been out well as timing. So I put no presumably. Yeah. And maybe unfairly, but presumably if he's on he forced his way on by convincing them. I'm ready. Uh, because Maggie if he's on the roster. He's a D H. I know he has to play. He has to play. Yeah, I and I heard you guys talking about that with Michael K yesterday. And it's a good point. Like he can't just D H because that we've already got a log gym. We already have a lot of people there. I don't know. Um, I still think you're going to need him at some point. I just said that he's no longer the son that which the organization, you know, revolves around him. But if you really want getting to the world series, I think you're underestimating what that's going to take because you're acting like the rays don't have great pitching.
You know, it's something got to beat the beat the Red Sox right in front of them. But I don't know. The Yankees took what the Red Sox wanted to run out there and game one last night. And they got him out of the game early enough that they could do what the Yankees in their heyday would do, which was get to your bullpen and punish them. And they kind of let the Red Sox beat themselves a little bit last night. You know, they got to totally but every move the Red Sox made backfire on them and Chad Tracy their manager, even when they lifted toly and then Miller comes in and writes it's the bomb right off of them. It just as nothing was working Roman Anthony got hurt early in this game. He's been dealing with issues. By the way, the picture last night for Boston, Peyton, toly. Yeah. I think some guys can pull off a mustache and some guys that looks like you're wearing a costume. You know, like, yeah. He looks to me like he's a guy who's like doing it ironically or is he. Jim from the office were going up to you to cut a Pope ranks and dressing as janitors with that mustache.
It looks like you know, something Bobby Valentine wore once I try to sneak back into a game. Like it looks like he's wearing a disguise or something like the mustache looks fake. The mustache looks like a Halloween. I just I couldn't come up with a costume. So I'm going to be me with a mustache. Yeah, I'm pickle for a mustache. Yeah, like one year for Halloween. I just wore my normal clothes and I just put hello. My name is a drunk belligerent guy because I had nothing. So that's what Peyton toly is. Yeah, he just it looks like he's wearing like Trent Grisham. That mustache fits. Right. Does it work? Whatever. Give me a percentage. I've had this discussion and I did we have this discussion recently. The percentage of men that could genuinely pull off a mustache. Well, the mustache solo like mustache. Yeah, no, no, no, no, no, beard is out. Yeah, mustache solo percentage of men as a woman that you believe can honestly pull that off. I mean, it's like Tom Selik and that's about it.
Right. It's like I made the argument and this might have been with Bart that more men in the world are actually capable of playing in the national football league that are capable of pulling off a mustache successfully. I think the odds are about 1500. Yeah, there's about 1500 men worldwide where the mustache actually works. I mean, you're right. Maybe like Eddie Murphy in like the 80s. His was okay. Yeah, that's a very specific. Yeah, yeah, Selik was. Selik's hit. Selik's. He's so that was I'm telling three men and a baby. Aera Selik with the mustache. Ray through and Steve Harvey. Harvey. Not mustache iconic. I can't imagine his face without it. Yeah. But Peyton Toli, the starting picture for the Red Sox last night, not only the mustache just the other stuff. Father, you a little too casual. Gonna be honest. Like if he was my teammate and I get having happy go lucky guys around.
Right. But if we're in the Bronx and it's game one of the wild card series and you're all smiles like I might strangle you as a TV. Like, come on. I get it. But like you're also not pitching well enough to be like yucking it up with Adley Rushman as you're walking off the feet. Yeah, that was when he got the double play and they're like, uh, barbs around each other like every inning. Like it's it is a bit much like I look at me. I'm enjoying the moment. I'm soaking it in like I get to see this is who I am. Right. Everybody tells you to live in the now and all that stuff. And here's this kid living in now. Look at me ripping him. Look at us ripping him. And I like it just tells you where our true bitterness comes from. No, it's just out of there's something about maybe it's living in this city and understanding the Yankee way, which is sober. Yeah. Laser focused like no smiles. I think Derek Jeter was smiling. He's not smiling. I think the flip play he was smiling. Is he throwing his arm around somebody after the flip play?
No, of course not. It's not the Yankee way. I know. So red socks. I just I like that. He had a right there. It was like his bobo is best friend. Yeah. I mean, there's just it's just a very, I don't know. I want someone who's more focused and he didn't pitch well. So like listen, if you want to pitch seven scoreless shut out innings far around all you want. Kyle Young on the on the chat. Peyton Tully is a clown trying to cosplay Rod Beck. That's a poll. Did Rod Beck even pull off the mustache? That's hard because he went mullet and mustache and that felt like dirt bag at the time. Yeah. And he was but he was in San Francisco and it's just, you know, like I'm I can kind of live differently when I'm there. Well, it's like alternative lifestyle. No, I mean, just just, you know, everything is tolerated in San Francisco. Yeah. Yeah. It's something about, yeah, the mustache because obviously, you know, the Yankees had the no facial hair except for the mustache for so long my whole life, our whole lives. I don't know.
I think it's not working for me. Okay. Listen, I totally get that and it's nice to see somebody have a little bit of a different look to them with this, but I. It's played out. I think young people that I have to go win these games to an order for you to have that. And that's the other part. That's where it doesn't work. It's always like the person on the ski slope who's got all the fancy gear on. It's like if you're not pulling three sixties off the moguls, get that stupid. That's doing like that. Pizza slice. You know, like just trying to barely stay awake and he's got $5,000 skis on. Exactly. The guy probably at the golf course has got the, you know, $1,000 clubs and. Yeah. T.S.G.s and he slices it into the woods every other time. Yeah. Schlippler. Let's get to Mike and Baldwin next on ESPN, New York. Mike, what do you got? Um, so just really quickly before I get to Schlippler, that was the most, uh, Homer. Uh, analysis of mustache as I've ever heard. I mean, Homer analysis. It's not no, no, no, no, when I initially made this, this, this discussion or had this discussion a couple of months ago, it was not about just that guy.
It just what I'm just kind of tying it in to what made you say. I'm not arguing with your overall point about about my stash is very, very, very few people can pull them off. And obviously Tom Selleck is the only example in history where we all agree. But like of those two guys you mentioned, Frank Risham looks ridiculous with a mustache and Peyton told me if you Google him and look at him without a mustache, the man needs a mustache without the mustache, he looks silly. I don't have any problem above his lip or what? Like, why does he need a mustache? No, he just, he just looks like, no, his face just looks like, uh, I mean, uh, you were saying, or Maggie was saying that she thought that he's not serious enough. Google his face without a mustache. I'm looking at him now. Is this going to be like a level like James Harden without the beard when you're like, oh my god, you're a totally different person. No, no, no, no, he doesn't look like he doesn't look like he's 15 years old without the mustache, but, uh, I'm looking at it now. Mike, strong disagree. If I Peyton, if I'm giving him advice like as a neutral party, I'm seeing his high school photos and stuff here, shave it.
Go back to the origin. I guess it depends on what the goal is. Is the goal to pick up ladies or is the goal to be that always? I'm going to say your entire question there. You know what I mean? Like Rod Beck, you said he's traveling right back. Yeah, I mean, Rod Beck had the crazy food man shoe in the, in the goteen or anything, but it really worked when he came out as a closer with only a wild madman, you know, little Al Herbosky in there or something. I think the food man shoe didn't name us. Namest had a food man shoe and a little bit. Yeah, yeah. What else you got? I think I missed that. That's got to be like spock of the go to where it's like evil name. Hey, am I wrong about that? Zorro Joe, maybe he did it one point. It doesn't ring a bell immediately. Maybe I'm wrong. What else you got? Oh, no, he does. My original, my original reason for calling was you guys are trying to figure out a nickname for, for Camp Slitler. And I think you stumbled upon a great idea because you threw out Kylo Ren, which I don't, I don't like Kylo Ren is the nickname.
But if you lean into the whole dark side thing, you know, I mean Larry Lucino called them the evil empire back in the day. I was living in Boston at the time and full disclosure. I'm not a Yankee fan. I'm a met fan. But I love the idea of him being Darth Vader. So I think that's the way the interior march really comes out to the mound. He raises the dark side. He left Boston, which, you know, they styled themselves, believe me, I know I lived there at the time. They styled themselves as the good guys and the Yankees are the bad guys who just lean into he's leaning into it anyway. So it might as well go and and if you think about it, you don't need to include the name. Matt Harvey was the dark night has nothing to do with the name. It had to do with the persona. So I think calling him Darth or Darth Vader or Vader or something like that would be beautiful. It's not bad. I love it. I just wonder is it at this point Star Wars has been around since the 70s. Like I know it's still iconic, but is it like Kim Schiller wasn't even born with when Darth Vader was a thing. Does that matter does it feel like it's a little played out little old? I mean, like I'm sure that's it's got to be somebody who's within his frame of reference.
And I don't know that Darth Vader is within his frame of reference. I think like Darth Vader will always be a, you know, you know, short hand for villain, right. But can we come up with something a little more current? Hmm. I don't know. Arturo checking and Dennis Ecclesley had a wicked stash. Did Dennis Ecclesley pull it off? Yes. I think he did. I agree. And this I know why now I thought of Joe Namus with the food man, too. It's the cover of sports illustrated. He's got it. Oh, he does. Yeah, iconic photo here. Turn around here. This is great for the audio only audience. This one. Yeah, yeah. No, that's not that's not that's not great. The joke. I'm here to do anything. Yeah, you can't well know you for the ladies. I would have always loved to be in that position socially or in society. Right. And do or wear or say whatever I want in women will just fall all over themselves. And not even Brady. That's that that's a that's what we call that's what a Brady called the time.
That's a Brady. Yeah. Like who's the like I'm just trying to think of like who else right now would be that kind of guy like for a while Clooney could have done whatever the hell he wanted, but he was always very put together. Clooney pit. Yeah. Well, like pit pit could dress like a dirt bag not shower for a week and a half. And it be the new thing. Yeah. No problem. Yeah. And then everybody starts not shower. And then we got a much bigger issue. Bob and Wayne is next on ESPN, New York. Bob, what's going on? Dude, how are you? Hey, I'm good. Really enjoy listening to the both of you together. Um, you know, yesterday watching the game in my opinion just further, you know, gave me the idea of like the Yankees have enough at D.H. Right? Like I thought Gold Schmidt, obviously he was playing first, but professional at that. Rice, obviously he did what he did, but even Garcia. Smoltable up the middle, great play by the Red Sox. So like to me, if Judge comes back, it has to be playing right field. So my question for you guys, because I haven't heard it really mentioned is Nick theories, you have the potential of three to the five games being played on turf.
And for what we know with calves, first games back on turf, rushing an injury, like I don't know, makes me nervous, you know, curious what you guys think. Listen, I get that and I think it'll be a factor. I definitely think it'll be a factor. I think it's a fantastic point. And he's right. Nobody is talking about that. Yeah. The stadium down there is just got awful. Yeah. They're getting a new one now, but everyone hates that place. Yeah. Everybody hates that place. And the Yankees have thought about this before with judges history years ago when they're like, well, he's coming back from injury and it's Tampa and the turf. They have thought about this before. Yeah. And I would think that this is this is definitely something that we haven't talked about enough that probably will be discussed at the end of the week. This is why like he's going to force his way in, man. And it doesn't go well. Or he tears he kills. He's going to get the blame and he should. He's going to get the blame because to me, if he if he's playing, it's because he forced his way back in.
Okay. Can I give you a scenario? What if tonight Yankees get chill? Mm hmm. What if something happens free to either re-injures himself, Rodon comes in, not effective. Well, just say as bad as it went for the Red Sox last night, let's just say the Yankees of a bad game. A million things could happen could go wrong. Are you going to feel the same way? Like, are we going to be so cavalier about judge take them or leave them? You know, if they get bombed tonight and then you got Garrett Cole with his history against the Red Sox, although to be fair, his history really was, you know, what's his face with the San Francisco Giants now, but they traded away. I got nothing. No, you know, the guy from, uh, come on. Who would talk about third baseman one? Oh, yeah, thank you. I don't know why I would just like blank down that. He really had a diverse problem. Yeah. Devours owned Garrett Cole when he was a Red Sox. Mm hmm. So maybe it's like not as bad overall as we like to think. But if there's a world where the Yankees lose tonight, I think people are not going to be so well judge take them or leave them.
It's going to be like, oh gosh, get this guy back in the line. I can't get enough of this today. And I just want to play a little bit more of it real quick. Oh, more sunny gray. Oh, yeah. So this one I have not heard. But there are a couple other ones that you haven't heard that you're going to want to hear. This is sunny gray. And I'm just fascinated by the title on why things didn't work with the Yankees. It's a one minute clip. So let's settle it. It should be good. There was a lot of outside this outside that unfamiliarity with with with me and in my situation and my family. You know, it just kind of like is it's kind of like one of those things that you know you have a snowball or whatever right. And there's a snowball that kind of starts rolling down a hill. And if you don't if you don't ever stop it, then the snowball just gets bigger and bigger and bigger. And it picks up traction and it just gets more snow. And it just continues to go down this thing. And then the bigger the snowball gets the harder it is to stop it or to take a step back. And for me, it just took me to get away and get myself into a different environment.
And then reflect on those things, right? Like reflect on what was good, what was bad, what didn't work. You know, and that took some time. But I do know that that playing here made me a stronger person, made me a better man, a better husband. Ultimately, it made me a better pitcher, a better baseball player. And that's kind of what I take from my time here, right? So that is what it is like to be mansplained. I did not realize I was going to include the whole snowball effect. Yeah. I think we know what the snowball effect is. Like you can just say that. We all kind of get it. Listening to that made me really hope I never get seated on a plane next to sunny gray. Like, oh boy. Yeah. You're still talking, huh? Exactly. Now, listen, I'm not trying to be disrespectful. I think, you know, there was the story at the time is that the Yankees wanted to change, like they wanted him to throw more sliders or was it more breaking balls? And he wanted to, he wanted a pitch in a different way. I just think it never worked. And maybe the Yankees has sort of blamed New York, but it was more about he disagreed with the Yankees analytics.
I'm just thinking about the times I like to think of myself as somewhat self-aware. And I'm just trying to think about the times where I've had conversations in the middle of them. I just said to myself, wow, you really sound like a nozzle right here. You really, you are mansplaining. You are the blank in this, you know, like, get, stop talking. And I have physically stopped myself from talking and actually made that observation. Wow, I sound like a blank. Wow. What was that like in the third quarter of a rockers game or something? Like the latest ones was driving on the Miami Dolphins. The latest one was like last year when I was having a conversation with someone about they had recently gone through something tough. And I started talking about something that I went through and realized, oh yeah, what I'm going through is, or what I went through is not even in the same stratosphere of what you're going through. And yet somehow I'm trying to make that correlation. And in the middle of my thought, I said, I looked at the person I just said, I'm going to stop talking now because I sound like a jackass.
Well, first of all, that's amazing. But that's when empathy goes wrong. You're trying to be empathetic to the person. Hey, you had this terrible thing happen. Well, I also have a blister on my foot. So yeah, that was basically that. That was the extent I have had to walk around through airports all week with a broken wheel on my suitcase. And it is the worst. So I know what you're losing your mom is like. This is I'm not going to lie. This is what all women kind of feel when men talk about pain and women have been through childhood. It's like, but I have this paper cut. It's like I pushed to who it out. I'm going to take the rest of the day off. It's like, oh, but these shoes are a little tight. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I'm crowding. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. No, you didn't. Because we all need it. We all need to get really slapped in the face every once in a while. But that's that's something that I try to pride myself on. Do you realize what you sound like?
I'm being able to say that to myself mid thought. You realize what you sound like. Wait, quick, quick recap. Shut up. You know, not to make this another quick childbirth thing. But when I was pregnant with my son, Sonny Gray was pitching in New York. And people asked me, are you thinking about Sonny? And I'm like, well, the guy sucks. He sucks here. He's been terrible. You all hate him. So yeah, I'm going to name my kids Sonny Gray. Yeah. Can you name him? He's re-battered. He's good. Do we name kids Sonny anymore? I don't know. I'm not opposed to it. It's a little Godfather, right? Yeah, I guess that's fair. That's fair. That's fair. Yeah, that is fair. Because you want to model yourself, your model, your kid after a hothead. Who met a terrible fate? Right. Speaking of Marlon Brando and the Godfather, different kind of mustache. But certainly kind of pulled it off. That's like an old school, right? But he pulled it off in 1971. It's Brando. And it was, but it was also, was it also based on a little bit earlier?
Yeah. We're talking about iconic moustaches and whether Peyton Toly's mustache looks like he's wearing a disguise. And again, the percentage of people actually alive who could pull it off. And I once again contend there are more people in the world capable of playing in the NFL than successful to pulling off. There are more people in the hockey hall of fame that can pull off a mustache. There are more people in the hockey hall of fame. Certainly in the basketball hall of fame. Yeah, I'll know how much I'm gonna really shine here, but I'll try my best. That's why I do everyday. So, that's readily apparent. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. So, let's start with some giant stuff.
So, I'll mention this because we only got into it over the last five minutes of yesterday's show with you in Grasza. The Giant's, of course, saying bye-bye to Odell Beckham Jr. Hopefully on good terms, like, he seemed like a good locker room guy, but it seems like the Giant's really just weren't using him, so maybe no big deal there? I don't think it's much of a big deal. I am curious if they'll try to bring him back if he would sign in the practice squad or not. But this was gonna be a problem because of Braxton Barrios when they're elevating him, and you can only do that three times. Yeah. And keep him on the practice squad. They had to sign him for the act of roster, and when Odell doesn't play any special teams, and he, how many snaps did he play? Did you play ten snaps? I don't know that he has. What's the point in keeping him around at this point? Can I make a suggestion? Maybe he should go play for the Jets. I mean, the Jets have suffered a couple of injuries in terms of their offensive weapons with 80 Mitchell. Would you rather have him or Sterling Shepherd? Well, that's what I'm saying. Sterling Shepherd caught that massive two-point conversion to them.
Whoa, Sterling Shepherd. I don't know. Maybe there's a spot for him across town. But I don't hate that. You know, it seemed like... The Addeni Mitchell thing people are not talking about it. Okay? I'm telling you, that Finger is broken. And I said it last week, Finger is broken. I'm wondering, you know, for Odell, it kind of seems like he's buried the hatchet with the organization. It seems like there's all good vibes and good feelings there, and unfortunately, he's not good enough right now. And luckily, you know, the Giants have a lot of injuries, but the White Receiver Corps not so much, so they just don't need them. Yeah. Can he play quarterback? He actually can. He actually can, but I wonder if he would have been the emergency. He usually is, isn't he? Yeah, I think so. He was the first time around. He's throwing a couple passes in his career. I'm feeling like, am I remembering this wrong? Did he throw a pass in the Super Bowl when he played for the Rams? No. In a playoff game, no. I don't think so. Ah, whatever. Anyway. Facts don't matter. Back up, Giants. No, but listen, with Odell Gone, I'm not terribly surprised by it because they had to die. I'm not really surprised by it because they had to do something.
And when you're just kind of limited in what you are right now, it doesn't help a roster like that. So what are you going to do? That's your big blue report. It's brought to you by King Zawayan. How about that time? Big blue report brought to you by King Zawayan. King Zawayan? You're the best slider in football. All right, Tom. Throw me off the good game, getting the sponsorship in. I appreciate it. I know. I usually don't do it without being beat over the head with it. I don't know if you knew this. King Zawayan. They have the best sliders in football. I just said that. They have the best sliders in football. I just said that. Yeah, because they do have the best sliders in football. Okay. Hey guys, guess what? King Zawayan? Best slider. Really? Go ahead. What have you got? Anyway, let's move on. Tim Haselbeck made a very interesting comment that you took note of Chris this morning on DPHR in Rathenburg. And this had to pertain to Jamis Winston. And whether or not his struggles had to do with, let's say some of his extracurricular activities that he did in the offseason. And here was Tim's answer. Listen, I think I got signed by the Giants because Jesse Palmer was a contestant on the bachelor. That's a little bit of whatever it was.
I do think you signal things with, yeah, decisions you make, how you handle the offseason. I mean, people know. It doesn't mean they're unhappy with them or anything like that. But, you know, I don't know that, you know, being a World Cup correspondent necessarily endeers you to, you know, what the grind is, what people in the building think the grind is to be the starting quarterback for an NFL team. So, do I think it's part of that? Yes. Do I think the age is part of that? Yes. I think there's a number of factors that probably play into it. And also, you just look at the roster, how they've rostered the position. I mean, you need to be ready to try to win games. There's a lot of football left. Look, I think. Yeah, I mean, that's a pretty direct shot. And I don't disagree with the idea that what does get me though is they just gave me the extension. We call it out the side hustle. Oh my God. What do I mean? Of course, Bond. Um, but, hey, okay, a couple things. You're right.
If the Giants actually thought that James was being pulled in too many directions or that he was gone Hollywood or whatever, because, you know, he's talking about Jesse Palmer in the Bachelor, then why did they give him the money? Why are they keeping him around? I think they kept him around because he's a positive vibes guy. Good energy guy. Players like him a lot. Yeah. I felt like he could throw the ball all over the lot. He did a good enough job when he filled in last year. He might be the best backup quarterback in the league. Here's a tip. The best backup is not somebody that you want playing 16 games. And so I think that's where this comes from. So they made the trade from McCarthy. I'll be curious to get your take on it. I don't know that it terribly means a whole lot. But I would just say that, um, for James. I think James is just perfectly comfortable being a backup. And like that life of pay me $3 million. And I'll be over here doing my thing. Yeah. A little shaken hands, kiss of babies, give him pump up speeches and being a world cup.
Suck on your fingers. Yeah. Eatin' W's. Yeah. Yeah. No, I'm sure he wasn't expected to get thrown in week two against the Rams and have to take it the rest of the way. And quickly, yeah, you're eating W's. Yeah. Quickly, I mean, I do not like the J.J. McCarthy trade at all. I think the giants were, I think they're delusional. I get being optimistic or glass half full. This to me feels like delusion. The fact that Minnesota gave up on him so quickly, Carlin. He hasn't, he started 10 games for them. He was the 10th overall pick. And they were more than happy to ship them out. Oh, come on. I think it's a stretch. I think it's a stretch, but I don't, I, I think there's a very little downside. Oh, I disagree. See, I think there could be some downside also because you need to do the J.J. McCarthy. You'll be a giant next year if there's real downside to this. Well, I don't, I don't know, probably not, but here's my thing about it. You need an actually like great backup if Jackson Dart's going to be your guy. That's what you've proven, right? Whether it's James or whether it's going to be James.
I think that's what you've been doing. That's what you've proven, right? Whether it's James or whether it's going to be someone else. And J.J. McCarthy has not shown that he can play the position. I don't care what you did in college. You're not playing UNLV this week. Like, it's different. You're playing the Arizona Cardinals. This is a totally different thing. I don't think McCarthy is an NFL quarterback. Next. One other giant snow. I will just gloss over Brax and Barrios now on the active roster for the giants in the wake of the Odell Beckham Junior. Some quarterback news to close out. Side line to sideline. This one, of course, we knew that Baker may feel will be out three weeks with his injury that he suffered on Sunday. The Buccaneers have also placed wide receiver Jalen McMillan on injured reserve. And the backup quarterback now will be Brett Ripon for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And over in commanders land, it looks like Jane Daniels may or may not be playing on Sunday. His status is still up in the air due to his elbow injury. Of course, if Marcus Marriota is going to play, I think they'll do just fine against the cold sun Sunday, but still no word on Jane Daniels.
Whether or not I can imagine he's going to play this week, but then I think we probably start talking about it shortly thereafter. No, but you already got your good Marriota game. Yeah, you get one. Exactly. You just got it again. Really good backup. Not somebody you want playing for an extended period. I'm going to be honest, this Tampa situation could go downhill really quickly. And I think old friend Todd Bowles might be the one. It's not his fault. The Baker keeps getting hurt. But ever since they gave Baker the extension, it seems like things have not gone right. And Bowles made pay the price. It's Carlisle Maggie at 800 919 3776 M.I. The nozzle. I did not listen last night and me being the jerk that I am and I should have. I didn't sink it up last night.
This is K on ESPN radio last night. The Ben Rice Grand slam. Bale deals. Driven P to right center field. That is better than a triple a grand slam for Ben Rice and the Yankees blow it open. What a night for rice as he jogs around second. He's slowly making his way to third. And he has put together an extraordinary night here in the playoff game. Yankees waiting for his whole plate and this place is up for grabs with the Ben Rice Grand slam. It's cool. Very nice. It's a big deal. But wait. Can I nitpick something? Sure. We talked to Michael K when he was in last week. We're talking about how he's going to do the national broadcast. Right. Are you still going to do see you? And he said, yeah. But maybe he's he didn't want to jam it in there when sometimes on a call like that. Yeah. If you're not quite sure if it's going to go, you might feel at the last minute like you're you're horse chewing it.
Let's see what he did earlier on the other rice. One and one two outs and nobody on bottom of the fifth. Hit the center field and deep. Raffi Ella back. Still back. Still back on the track at the wall. Leaps. Yeah. A whole bunch of monument park. Dead center field. Lefty against lefty and rice is floating around the base as he touches third high five's Rohan and heads to the plate. And when he steps on the plate, it is two nothing games. All right. Glad we got one. Yeah. So I. I get that. I think there are there are times if you're not quite sure if it's going to go or not. Yeah. You don't want to horseshoe something in there just to you know. Never stop sterling. That's what. Well, I love John. That's. That's a recipe. That's John. Like I love John. You know, line drive. It's a bullet. It is high. It is hard. And it's just. It's a wall scraper. John and it's 10 feet off the ground. Oh, I miss them. Yeah. I know. Maggie, my darling. Maggie darling.
I love it. Did he ever fail to call you darling? And I appreciated it. Like there was. It was always just felt like such a throwback. Like, oh, darling. It was like. It was like he was a movie star from the silver screen. It was always wearing the scarf. The scarf. Absolutely. Yeah. All right, Tom. Am I the nozzle? It's not even just me this time, but we have a very, very interesting nominee. Let's have it. There are two sides to every story. Everybody need to keep a cool booty. Okay. We are here to judge. I pleaded to fill. Am I right? A door. Am I the nozzle? No, no, no. All right, Thomas. What do we got today? So Iowa, I don't know if you've heard of it before. It's a wonderful place. And it's got this university called the University of Iowa. And they have the Hawks. And Atlanta is also a wonderful place. And they've got this team called the Atlanta Hawks. So you've got the Hawks versus the Hawks.
There's a big difference there. One of them has eyes at the end of it. And one of them is from Iowa. I don't know if you could tell. Those seem to be the primary differences. Yes. Yes. How about others? Yes. It seems very basic, but apparently there was a certain politician who was not aware of this. So I don't know who was who. I believe this was Eric Schmidt. Eric Schmidt was using the two as correct. And this is on C-SPAN. He was questioning Jack Smith going to a game, I guess, during a political event. I couldn't tell you because politics are for a letter word to me. And let's also be clear. This is not a partisan nozzle here. No, it's however, this is more about the moment itself. Yes. And you also hear Amy Klobuchar's voice in there as well because we got to give everybody credit. So this is from C-SPAN Hawks versus Hawks. Guys, this was a five minute rant. I narrowed it down to a minute and 17 seconds. If this is the correct basketball game, I recall going to a University of Maryland basketball game where Caitlin Clark was playing right around that time. And the Marshall Service was there with me.
You could check if that was the exact date. It was Maryland playing Iowa. You could check that out if that's what we're talking about. Could it then be that University of Iowa's the Hawkeyes? Could that be it? And maybe before we show this kind of thing. But if he was at an Iowa game, is that correct? It was because Caitlin Clark was coming to Maryland to play. That might be the confusion over the names of the team, but perhaps you should have looked at it more carefully. Who's questioning is this, by the way? You are using your time, Senator. Is this what this is? Are we just having like an open session here? I have to open my questions. I just, I just, I just, I just, I'm glad you're trying to rehabilitate the witness, but it's not your time. I think you are calling a witness a dirt tag. I presented him with text messages about him wanting to meet with people that could have obviously been related to the prosecution. That was coordinated with his office in Atlanta. Well, I'm going to begin my questions now, but I think that people should have their facts straight before they have used someone. I'm going to be a dirt bag and not get the team's fault. I'm seeing by that statement. Who sees what your question is.
Thank you. From the state of Minnesota, where we have the go first. So there's not a lot of confusion. There's not a lot of professional teams with those names. So to be clear, he was accusing Smith of being at an Atlanta Hawks game against the Golden State Warriors on this particular date, which was the date after I guess they had some issues with the Georgia prosecutor. Yeah. And he was accusing him of a perjury. Like, were you at this basketball game? I think you've heard your yourself already. Yeah, he goes, no, I wasn't at this basketball game. I think you were. Yeah. And now you have these text messages. Yeah. Holds up the big board. His staff holds up the big board with the text messages. And he keeps accusing him of being at the Hawks game, but he was at an Iowa Hawke eyes game in Maryland. He's trying to place them in Atlanta when he was actually a Maryland watching Kaelin Club. Oh my God. Play the Terrapins. And in the process, as he was questioning him, called him a complete dirt bag.
This is what I've always thought. This is by the way, this is a nozzle Hall of Fame because this senator Eric Schmidt from Missouri. And this could be Democrat Republican. It doesn't matter, but he presented this evidence like it was slam. Oh, I'm about to. Yeah. I am about to embarrass you. Look at look at these cameras. It was like Tom Cruise against Jack Nicholson. I mean, just like, do you have the truth? You can't handle that. I mean, he was setting up for like this courtroom drama. And then it turns out he just had the totally wrong basketball game. Wrong city, not NBA women's college hoops. This is why I've always said, Carl and politicians need sports consultants because they make dumb mistakes like this all the time. Do you think that somebody got fired today? Oh my God. That had to be a staffer that made the mistake and put it all in front of them and laid it out. We're going to get this guy. And here's how what's ashamed we can't fire the senator. Right. He's the one who went out there and said it, but they get elected. I did see like a camera following the senator outside.
And it's like center. You want to tell us what just happened? What are you talking about? I played her all day. There's no nothing. Yeah. Oh my God. Oh, yeah. People people confuse the Atlanta Hawks of the Iowa Hawkeyes all the time. Oh my God. That's amazing. That is absolutely. There's no discussion about who's the nozzle and that one. That was fantastic. Do we even need to have another one right now? I don't know that we do. I got another one if you want. It's a global affair this time. All right. Quickly. Let's go. All right. This global affair is up in Canada because Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Let's just say he made some dumb comments on a podcast episode. And this is in reference to his slumpier. He opened up about it. They, the blue Jason pay me to hit 40 every year. Home runs. They paid me for what I already did. I want people to understand one thing. The money they gave me wasn't for what I'm going to do. It's for what I already did. They didn't pay me because I'm going to hit 40 every year. They paid me for what I already accomplished. People are confused about that. But I think the same the same way they do. Like sometimes I even say to myself, bro, they gave you all that money and you're out here doing nothing.
I try. You know how it is with fans when you're good. They're with your 100%. But when you smell like you know what? Like we like to say here nobody supports you. The ones who support you are the ones who stay with you. Those are my fans. Those are my family. And his dad, his family, by the way, told him, yeah, you might want to reverse that. And he did. Yeah. Okay. Now do it and spend it. No. Yeah. I love ways like no, no, no, you don't get it. I was I was giving all this money for what I did. It's like no, no, Vlad. You don't get it. No, no, Vlad. Those were the Iowa Hawkeyes. That's exactly what that sounded like. You may want you at no wrong game. Wrong game. Wrong game altogether. Wow. That's not a curse. That is tone deaf. I think is probably underselling it a bit. Well, at first he doubled down on the comments. And then I think it took his dad or somebody getting in his ear and saying, no, you're wrong. They're paying you for what you're going to do. Thanks for listening to the Chris Carlin podcast. I want my enemies to burn and hell.
