Hour 5: Bobby Carpenter + Did Brayan Rocchio save the Guardians season?

Uh, great walkoff win by the Guardians just now, Brian Roqueo, his second home run of the afternoon, the first one was a grand slam, which got you back in the game. And if you're going to tell me that playoff Roqueo is heating up, I'm going to need some time to myself because that is exactly what I want to hear about playoff Roqueo. I mean, you see, he'll hand me one that game, grand slam, walkoff home run. I just went that in the big O'Card today. And by the way, bailed him out from a disastrous start from Logan Allen.

1:02I will have more on this game, but again, great win, Gardos game two with the double header tonight. You can take two of these. We're going to feel very, very good. The pendulum swings back the other way for the Cleveland Guardians, but to go ahead and talk Ohio State is we are within 24 hours of Ohio State ball state on the wise heart. Right. We make it right. Call Kyle right hotline NFL linebacker Ohio State linebacker and 971. And the fan host Bobby Carpenter joins us now. Bobby, welcome to the show. Hey, thanks for having me on guys. It's excited to get some actual football rolling it just about all the levels. We got one more night in a week. What is it? Five or six days until we get a little NFL football starting up here on Wednesday night. We are we're ready for all the football. I was at a, oh gosh, it was a black river north western game last Friday. That's how much I'm jonesing for some football. My brother's also the defensive coordinator's that helps. But I do want to know like Ohio, where are you with this Ohio State?

2:04Where have you set the expectations for this team? You know, I think every year with Ryan dad, like when the big and when he was says, you know, when the big 10 make make the playoffs, when a game or two, like, hopefully that's getting you to second round, maybe the semi final, depending on where you come in and then on, you know, sometimes those special years where it all kind of lines up. Better in quarterback, you stay healthy, that's the continuity on the team. Like then you can maybe challenge and hopefully get us try to win, you know, win it all. And so I think the team is different than last year, probably just as good. And so hopefully better, probably more experienced the quarterback. Different on defense, obviously lost a lot of really talented players. So that's going to be, you know, a tough spot. But the guys that came in really good, not Patricia's phenomenal. Arthur Schmitt is going to do a great job on the offensive side with no doubt. So they have all of the ingredients. Just you need a little bit of luck and you need to stay healthy.

3:06Yeah, I mean, they allowed just nine points per game last year. Three defensive starters returning eight gone. Lot of transfers coming over though. What's the, what's the early perception of how you guys think this defense is going to go? I think it'll be different in last year. Nine points a game. I don't know if we're going to be able to replicate that. And they were historically good last season. They had three guys drafting the top 11. Four guys off the board in the top 40. And they were as good as you were going to get. And in like sunny and sunny was obviously good. Caleb was great. There was expectations there. I don't think people expected our valedict be as good as good as quickly as he was. And the same thing with Kaden McDonald and both those guys accelerated much quicker. I was Kaden Curry who had, you know, double didn't sag last year. So a lot of production is gone. But you brought in some guys that are pretty good. Christian Allegro or a little junior James Smith, Quayers, Sal. Like you feel good. The guys that are there have been developing. I think this defense might be a little more aggressive this year. Last year, one of the things like as good as they were.

4:09There's really forced many turnovers. Didn't really, you know, have a ton of sacks throughout the entirety of the season. I think this this year could be a little different with that where they maybe could be a scene that maybe gives up a little more points, but maybe makes some more impactful plays on the defensive side. Bobby, which games? I know everybody circled the Texas game. I'm not as high on Texas as everyone else. I think they're very talented. I'm not a believer in Sark. I'm probably a little bit more interested in the Oregon game myself. What games have you circled as the one that matchups your most curious about this year, though? You know, I think that Oregon game because they're very talented. I think Texas is really talented too. But Dan Lattie is kind of entering that Ryan Day phase that he was in a couple years ago where you've been ahead coach at a big time program for a number of years now. I think Ohio State obviously has bigger internal expectations, probably than Oregon with their fan base. I think nationally people look at Oregon's, okay, this team they've got Phil Knight.

5:10They have all the players they need. They should be able to go compete and win a national championship. And I think Dan Lattie has made the playoffs. They have the number one seed two years ago. They've lost kind of in rough fashion, gotten beat up a little bit. When he started looking at how those games went and so people started raising the question, okay, like it is a time. And the question is like, if not now, then when? Like, that's all part of it. So, you know, they've got to deal with that. But that Oregon team is going to be really, really talented. So curious to see how that's going to ultimately go. And you know, part and parcel of that. I think just, it's crazy to say this. Like, you never thought you'd drop Penn State from your schedule and pick up Indiana and it'd be a tougher schedule. But the situation with having to play over Indiana, I think it'll be the hot, most hostile environment in the world. But anytime like you're going to play a team that beat you, the Fending National Chants, I think there's going to be some juice to that. Yeah, six AP top 25 teams on the schedule for the preseason at least.

6:11Is there, is the perception around Columbus that you guys kind of enjoying this? Because last year it felt like a sleepwalking in many ways. Yes, there was Texas early, but there, it just wasn't the toughest schedule. And then you got to the big 10 title game in Indiana kind of knocked you around. But you saw what happened in that game and then Miami, it just kind of felt like it wasn't tough enough during the regular season. Is that the vibe? Obviously, you have Texas week two, but then you look, like you said, the Oregon, USC, Indiana. You've got Michigan on there. It is Illinois, I think it's going to be pretty decent as well. I mean, I was ranked. And so I think that the schedule gets your attention as a player. It got your attention a lot of season. So it allows you to be more hyper focused as you work through that. And like you said, the sleepwalking element, I mean, yeah, you coaches can hype it up. But when you realize it's probably only playing two and a half quarters as a starter, and you get in there and you're dominant, but it's hard to keep that edge sharp when you're not really going through a four quarter football game, except for a handful of times a year.

7:15And this year, maybe you suffer some losses at some point, but you're going to be more battle tested. And I think that that's more important than the in the long run. Bobby, I love stuff like like how fan bases Edmund flow with coaches. Jim Tressel was beloved from that first year in Columbus. And nothing really ever changed that. Urban Meyer having done what he did at Florida and Utah before him and in BG was, was beloved pretty much walking in that door. Ryan's obviously had a different kind of path here. But he went, he went set first national championship. You get the Michigan win again. I'm just curious, what does another natty do for Ryan Day and just his legacy and kind of how he's perceived his, his buck ice head coach? Do you know how many coaches have won multiple national championships at Ohio State? That's the answer. So he would be the second. And as good as urban was, as good as Michael's Tressel, they're putting in the ring

8:18honor, man. I love trust. You know, probably stuck to get only to my father with the influence he's had on my life. But you know, Ryan, if he wins another, I mean, that's a rare fight air. And said he wants to stay here for another 10 years. I was hoping he'd stay for five, just get through his kids. I believe he's younger daughters of a trader. And if he does that, like, he's going to be the second all time winning his coaching program history. And I don't know if there's going to be coaches to coach for 27 years anymore, like Woody Hayes. So, you know, he's got that before me. He's a phenomenal coach. He's a great man. He fans are very lucky. I hope they realize how blessed they are when you have a guy who is as good a coach as he is. Because those guys are rare. You know, if people talk about him not being a real buckeye and everything, like, I mean, he got this job when he was, you know, in his 30s, 39. You know, it's the first time in my life where I was closer in age to the head coach than

9:22the players. Not the function of me getting older. But I've got to watch him do this job. You know, kids grow up here instead. He's like, four. She knew there's nothing else other than the state of Ohio and Duke of Buckeye and he got young kids to go to the North West of Bala and everything through here over the second. And so I think Ryan has embraced it. Winning that national championship helped. The winning beating Michigan last year helped. If you could beat Michigan again, you can flip that record. You're over the next couple of years and get on the pod top side of that ledger. And another national change didn't have 120 wins, 130 wins. Like, it's really an unprecedented run. And unfortunately for him when he came in, like, he was inheriting, you know, 17 years of just utter domination of the Michigan rivalry. And some of those teams weren't very good. And especially in the end part of that urban era, some of them were great in the middle

10:26of the meat of it. I mean, he played Michigan's champion. And so they were good schools. Well, 24, 2024, it shouldn't happen. But that probably led to a national championship. And so there's the whole story with it. I think people do appreciate it. All right, Bobby, we got a boogie, buddy. Oh, sorry about that, buddy. We had a little phone break up. We could obviously have some conversations about that. But the thing that's everybody's buzzing about right now is a double home run day by Brian Roqueo. And I think it's a little hyperbolic to say that that win saved the Guardian season. But I also think it's an incredibly important win. And if you then turn around and take the second half of this double header, it really does

11:29with what I think now 21 games to go after the second game, 20 games to go. It's hard to kind of overdo it with praise of what these two games could mean. It felt like a massive one. And it was massive for a couple reasons. Roqueo single handedly win in the game is huge. Also the idea that Roqueo is slumped. We talked earlier about Buzana, maybe not having the greatest stretch here two months of baseball that hadn't been good. And Roqueo had been just as bad throughout that stretch to the point where if we're trying to find a spot for her now, it's I'm sorry. It was going to be Roqueo that was getting replaced. But you have games like this and you're giving yourself a chance if you're Roqueo. Yeah. And what was huge about that? Roqueo two hits, two home runs, five ribbies. Buzana today had two hits before getting pulled for a pinch hitter for David Frye. And now had two hits. Chase the Lauder had two really nice doubles as well. I will tell you though, it was driving me crazy. I am very rarely the guy that complains about the umpire guy. Yeah.

12:30This this home played umpire today was killing me specifically in the big inning where Roqueo ended up teeing off in the fourth inning. Here Montero couldn't hit the broad set of a freaking barn. And this guy was calling every high, high ball a strike. And I get like Guardians fans just go, well, you're going to win those. So just challenge every play. It's like, well, that's not really how this works. No, right? Because there's a chance that even if it ends up being a, or even if it's truly a strike, they don't always get the review right. Yeah. Sure. You do it in basically high, high leverage times in the right opportunities. You can't just be challenging things all game. Now that being said, I do feel like game two was much more of a winnable game given who's on the bump. I, I didn't have any confidence in Logan Allen today. And that was quickly rewarded by a, you have no confidence in me kind of performance. Was this a bogo situation? A buy one? Get one.

13:30You win that game. You guys, especially the way that they did it. You know, and this is something that in the past month or so people have been asking like trying to figure out what is different about this Guardians team than what we've seen, maybe a month or two months ago. They don't erase six one leads two months ago. Yeah. We just watched them play too much. They're not six one two months ago. That's a loss. I'll see you tomorrow. Get, get ourselves to the post game show them doing that putting up the five run spot in the fourth inning is just not, we're starting to see it more and more. We a couple weeks ago we started to see it. Now we're starting to see it more and more. And that's a sign that's a sign that's something good as that. Yeah. And the kind of offensive performance since the trade deadline that you've gotten, sorry, if you've gotten all season long, the performance you've gotten from this offense since the deadline, you might be 10 games above 500. Well, man, it makes sense though. I mean, there's, we have three different players. It's a 30 year lineup is brand new and different, you know, and Adele had been tearing the cover off the ball. We like low, although he, he kind of, he, he, I, you have comments on his appearance. I'm sure. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. He looks like a plumber. Oh, you're going for plumber.

14:32Yeah, it's a blue collar job, maybe an HVAC guy. Yeah. Like that's a guy who works 75 hours a week and doesn't complain. I was thinking like a Ouija type thing. But Friday night he goes out to his, his, his barn slash workshop. Can you get a second job? Yeah, yeah. He kicks his feet up uncorks. Well, I'm going to assume he's maybe a PBR could be a course light. I'm hoping it's a course banquet. But he, and he just puts his feet up and he goes, I got it made. Yeah, he does a good playing. That's the point. He lives life one beverage at a time. Yeah, but appreciation for that beverage. And because he's earned it. He's not, well, he has. He worked hard. It was 75 hours. Work hard. As a gig economy and a man, by the way, 75 hours, that's, that's before we get to the, the woodworking side hustle. He just, he didn't just barely make it to Friday. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, he had more in the tank. And he's ready for tomorrow. Yeah, that's what the annual low looks like. He's going to party tonight. He's ready for tomorrow. Yeah, he gets right back up with the crack at the end. He honestly, he doesn't see a difference to, you know, work in and party. I mean, you, you know, what's the, the store with the owls or fly with the eagles?

15:35What's that one? Give me some help here at 615 on a Friday. I can't do the Nathaniel low. I can't, I can't, I can't pull it off. Listen, I think you, you know what line I'm going for. Isn't it, isn't it, is it who with the owls? Who with the owl? The store on the eagle's, you don't know anything. No, because you've messed it up. So anything that happened today really should be under the banner of I probably should have realized how late it was going to be out and scheduled a day off and scheduled a four day weekend, like a month ago. I should have seen this one coming, right? No, everybody else worked today. Why would you have taken off? Because I'm special. Ken and Anthony showed up after being out wait later than you. I mean, she's even on the Ken's bath. Alignment was out until the Colorado game end of last night. That was like midnight. I left Lima and Owen at the bar. And I thought one of them won't make it. I just were heavy. It was Lima, but I was like, you know, I don't know if Owen was there to look after Lima or if Owen was also getting deep in the booze train. I don't know how it went, but I knew it probably wouldn't go well, but they did well. They actually got great. They both showed up. Like I could not have been me. I think Ken was a little jealous that he wasn't able to hang out even later with them

19:39because he also had a long drive back. That's how he traded on the air. I don't know. I will tell you when he said hotel, I was like, why didn't I think that I could have done a hotel because I would have liked to, you know, like everybody wanted to buy you a drink. I couldn't. I had a 50 minute drive home drive. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fairness can piece out way earlier than any other host, not named Jeff Phelps or any basking. Oh, did he? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, he had a long drive back. I get it. It was what it was. I, it's almost surprising. David Buster's wasn't like let's just put you up and you can sleep in the, maybe the Ghost Busters game. He ball or something or other big arcade that the human clock arcade. You can just sleep in there. Sleep on all the balls. Yeah. Well, there was, there was more like, like, 40 devices was the prizes. Oh, that's right. Yeah, yeah. It depends on, on which human crane that you go to there. Well, no, because the David Buster, you know, what I mean is the David Buster in Canton has, has more ball shaped objects.

20:39Oh, is that right? Yeah. I know because I was there a year, a year and a half ago with my kiddos. This one only had a quotation device as the way, but it was like specialty, it's a quotation devices. Now, the funny thing to me is, because I've heard the story told the Dishon Watson card issue. I don't think it's properly been told on air. Okay. I'd like to hear your version of it. I've heard the morning show four different times describe it. So I'd like to hear your version. So the bomber sports card team there, it comes up and they've got a very funny bit. 2022 Dishon Watson signed card and then a Dishon or Shadour card also signed. Yeah. So one of these cards is something I would be interested, but there might be Brown's fans who want the Dishon card, right? Bounce back. I didn't even know that Dishon was signed. I thought that Dishon one was just numbered. I know. I think they were both signed. Okay. I looked at the Shadour one. That one was definitely so. But so initially, we think, all right, Dishon, that one's going to go first. And so I reach in, pull out the first, the first submission and, you know, read out the numbers.

21:39Nobody shots out. And then I say a female's name. And it was like, well, that's just not great. Unfortunately. But they weren't there. You had to be on site to get this prize. So I go out of the hopper. Here's another one. Here's the six digit number there. And then we turn it over. And once again, it's a, it's a female's name. And you're like, all right, do they, are they actually there and they just don't want it? Yeah. Or is it, you know, are they really just not there? And so at this point, Daryl's heard me go, oh, later twice, twice, twice. And then I'm like, all right, I can't, I can't do it a third time. So then I go clearly, this won't happen again, pull out the third one. Oh, later. And it's a lady. Yeah. So now three and we're over three. Yeah. And so now it's very, very funny. And I was like, all right, and then Keith is like getting frustrated because it's slowing down the whole bed. And so Keith's like, come on, let's do one more. So we do one more. And it was also a lady. Nice. And so the idea that Dashaun Watson's card to pull for that specific one, we got four

22:45straight women. I don't mean to break this to everyone, but usually at these fan events, not stockpiled with females. You know, they had to sign the thing though, right? No, I'm saying like typically though, like if you, you know, in case anyone wasn't aware, it's usually, it's usually a male prevalent than female prevalent. So the idea that we pulled out four ladies is statistically, that is going to be incredibly small. And then we just all broke down laughing and then we just kind of are like, well, who wouldn't love the Dashaun card with the Shador card? And then immediately we got somebody to win it. Yeah, that was nice. And that guy had actually been there for the duration of our show for the most part. I mean, like three hours of our show then he hung out for another couple of hours. So it was good that he won it. Now I have a very strong tennis take here, all right, wait. By the way, I dig it out. I email. Christy says I did have the pop of shot high score. Yeah. Is that me exclusively the email? Yeah, oh, only you. And by the way, Kudos to Lima, I came in third, I believe, and Lima came in second.

23:45I want Jacks to talk about what he thought about Andy Baskin's pop shot is what I want. That was a real treat. I mean, probably one of the funniest videos I've seen. So, I like it. Living and dying with each shot is what made it for me. Oh. That's a great. What Andy Baskin' video you watching over there? Are we sure we got the right video? Not the workbook one. Okay. All right, just making sure. He's a talking pop shot. Well, and the funny thing is, like, listen, I don't look like a paragon of athleticism. All right, I am obese. I am, the body's breaking down at this point in my 40s. But it looks like I've shot a basketball before. You, sir, you look like you shot a basketball before. Lima. I didn't know he had shot a basketball before. Lima, look like somebody who had hooped at least once. Didn't he play high school basketball, Lima? You did he? Maybe he was like, he's so slender. I think maybe he went out for his high school team and didn't make it. Maybe that's what that is. That's right. That's a lot of us. I don't know.

24:46I think that's more the story. I thought he played high school hoops. But, we've got the big calves guy, you know? You could have played basketball while in high school. Yeah, just not for the high school team. Yeah, just not for the high school team. Yeah, maybe that's it. But, Baskin' looked like it was the first time he picked up a basketball. And I just, and I don't want to shame a man. So good. Because clearly I have no room to talk about a lack of athleticism. But I was just, and so you pair the, I don't know that you've shot a basketball before. With then the, so Reena Williams, I will tell you, I don't think that helped the, well, okay, it helped me because I left my ass off watching it this morning. I didn't see it. Any of the, I didn't see it last night. I saw Lyma's last night. I saw obviously yours last night, mine last night. I, it was the first thing I woke up today and it put me in the best mood. That's good.

25:46Despite really being tired because I'm a real grinder. Really enjoyable. I do think by the way, you had a clear thing up with Christie. Why? He was not pleased with you. It felt like. What was that? Well, you said on the air and you said something effective like how I was such as a big diva or something about the pop a shot or something. We're trying to make it seem like a big deal that I had to go over there and do that. And she came up and she's like, I, I didn't tell Nick any of that. I, I know it's Nick. He's just messes with people. It's fine. But then I think that I think I'm getting the email. I think it's based off of that. I think she, nope. I think she, I think she's a little, she's a little peeve. No, we talked after that. Oh, you did. Okay. You're actually really good. Yeah. Okay. That's good to hear. Yeah. I'd hate to have that happen for you guys. No. What a hate to have that happen. Yeah. I'd listen. You're already my work, Boo. It's a married woman right there. But if her and her husband could be like work, booze, is it whatever, whatever like, I'm just saying like them together. All right. Tell me you tend to stay. All right. No. I'm just saying like if there was something different than work booze that you could use for a couple.

26:46Yeah. Like a like a work and a uncle. Yeah. That doesn't sound great. No. Cause they're not that much older than me. They're really not. I'm just digging a hole here, aren't I? They're really not. Yeah. I've mentioned I'm tired. I'm real tired. I've been in a long couple of days. I really did. Yeah. All right. Tell me your tennis deck. All right. Anyways, I'm already, you know, I'm already one foot out the door when it comes to tennis. Anyways, little one thing the desk and the desk and could do when we were co-hosts is mention tennis. 27:47I'm now hot on the trail because the US opens going on. I just found that out today. Arnia Sabalenko stopped the match today and said it complained to the judge. Someone is smoking weed. Do you mind because it's so strong. This is why people don't like professional tennis players. There is no way you can be hot boxed at the US open. It's opens in the name. Yeah. All right. You can have the kind of stuff that would send Snoop dog to the moon, which is like the equivalent of like the weed equivalent of heroin. And I'm going to tell you in an open situation, it will not affect you at all. This is a real diva move from Sabalenko. You know, I've been a team Sabalenko. I'm out there. Yeah. I do feel like they've had a real problem with the US open with influencers this year. It's kind of like they have a big ban on influencers. They've kicked people out for just being on their cell phones and not watching the event.

28:49But everyone in New York goes to the US open just to who's who. That's what it is. It's turned into a who's who. It's not even a real sporting event at this point. It's just a who's who who post everything they possibly can. But again, I think that's a response to that though. I think that the party culture, the Instagram culture is taken over the US open and Sabalenko is just pissed about it. Yeah. And say thank you for being interested in this sport. I think what it's there's always been interest in the US open. They've always been able to sell out. Now they're just selling out to people that they don't want there. They don't want the influencers there. They want assuming they're charging more for it too. Oh, up the you know what. And by the way, you know what? That's why I said you know what. But I don't know what. Because you know what? Could you specify? If I applied when I say you know what, what? Up the you know what is. That's the idea. Those honeydews is like 30 bucks a piece. Yeah. Yeah. It's insane between that, the food, all of it. Yeah. It's turned into Instagram culture and which is what you can do.

29:50And the real tennis. They're in the real tennis knobs are pissed about it. Yeah. Then retire. They wanted to go back to 1995. Complaining about weed and an outdoor again. I got the same issues in the golf world too. I don't have them. I like that the culture is taken over in the in the golf world. That's boost. And it's kind of made it a little bit cooler. But like if you go to a gust of for instance, there's decorum that is supposed to be met there. There's a line that you can and cannot cross. And in the US open, that's their Augusta. And so they feel like that line has been crossed. The the hot boxing has commenced and they're pissed about it. Mug on Twitter. You're a professional athlete trying to perform at your best. You want to inhale that during your sport? It's not going to do anything to you. It'll you there. They're 20 feet away, 10 feet away. They're it's deluded. And hail what? There's it's it's air. That's all it is. It's scented air. Yeah. You're a professional athlete trying to do your best. Good Lord, Mug tell us you don't know how to hang. I think it was easy win for her in the tennis community. And I think she took it.

30:51I think you know what? This proves I think she took it. I think it's an easy win. Quite frankly, this proves why we'd all be better off if professional tennis wasn't professional anymore. Just take the money out of it. Take take all that I just play for free. Do it for the love of the game. Do it for the love of the game and no spectators will show up. So you aren't possibly bothered by a hint of the guys. It's the funny part about it. It is an event that just turned too cool and too to invoke.
