This episode is so close to my heart — and honestly, one I could talk about forever. I'm diving into how to become your own best friend, the magic of solo dates, and why learning to love being alone is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself. Whether alone time feels scary, boring, or just unfamiliar, I'm walking you through how to make it feel peaceful, fun, and something you actually look forward to. I'm also sharing my weekly review, current obsessions (citrus season + matcha is back!), goals of the week, an affirmation, and a self-love journaling prompt to close us out.

Hello, my love.
Welcome to the Busy Yet Pretty Podcast.
I'm your host, Jaden Haley.
I'm so happy you're here with me today, because this topic is something that I am very passionate about,
and I love very much, which is how to become your own best friend, solo dates, and spending time alone.
This is something that I feel like we could all learn more tips on,
because sometimes we just want to be with someone a lot, or not be alone.
And that's okay. It's human nature for us to want to be with somebody,
but sometimes it's good to know how to be independent and enjoy being alone.
So, one, you don't have to rely on someone, and two,
so you can actually enjoy spending time with yourself,
because you have you and yourself, your entire life,
you are the only person in this world who's going to spend your day one with you
to the very end last day with you.
You are the longest you will ever spend your life with yourself,
so you want to enjoy it. You're the only person who will, so you have to enjoy it.
But before we get into today's episode, let's go into our weekly review.
So, this week, I have really just been locking into a motivated week,
and this is something that I've been needing, especially for spring around the corner.
I recorded an episode on this, but it was last week's episode,
but it's how to reinvent and rebrand your life.
And I feel like we all have that urge to do that,
and my urge came now.
So, I had that just like reset,
and I'm feeling so much more motivated, refreshed, organized.
It's actually crazy how much organization can just save your life and help you.
So, if you're feeling stuck or in a slump,
I really recommend you listening to last week's episode on that.
But anyways, another thing this week is,
I have just been shopping for some spring wardrobe pieces.
I had a little reset when it came to decluttering,
but I can't lie, the minute I declutter, I love to replenish what I just got rid of,
and it's more of like starting a new era.
And I try to lean into the minimalist mindset,
and I think I do that really well when it comes to kind of like the mental portion,
but when it comes to physical,
I really just do love a lot of things,
and it just makes me happy.
Like, I have a lot of mugs and dishes,
because I get so excited every morning to pick out what bowl am I going to put my breakfast in?
Or what mug am I going to put my watch in?
So, doing that makes me really happy,
which is why I feel like I always accidentally lean into the maxless mindset,
since I just enjoy a lot of beauty and things.
Another thing this week is,
I have been trying to just get in bed earlier.
When you were in bed earlier,
again, you're setting yourself up for success for the next day.
Your morning routine always begins with your night routine.
So, I was just trying to get in bed earlier,
and even enjoy like a few episodes of a show and stuff,
as long as I'm in bed and not out and about.
Sometimes I'm like,
I'm walking really late in stuff,
and I'm on the walking path,
and I'm like, you know,
I need to just decompress and wind down my body,
so that has been really helpful.
Now when it comes to the current obsessions of the week,
my current obsessions right now is citrus fruits.
I just love seasonal spring produce.
It is one of the best seasons of produce in my opinion,
but I have just been really leaning into citrus berries.
It just is so nice,
and then having like a few scoops of coconut yogurt on top.
Oh my gosh, that combo is literally perfection.
It's almost like berries in whip or like berries in whipped cream.
It's so divine.
Another current obsessions right now has been body scrubs
and body lotions.
I love fragrance,
and I try not to use it too much just for my health,
so I really use it sparingly,
but when I do use fragrance,
I really do enjoy it,
and I just haven't really enjoyed some body lotions
and body scrubs lately.
Picking out like a body lotion or a body scrub
to use in the morning or the evening,
whenever you do your shower,
just makes you excited to get in the shower.
It's almost like a little highlight.
And my last current obsessions right now
is matcha lattes with pistachio milk
and then adding vanilla collagen powder.
That combo is another perfection thing
that I have just been loving,
but I am back in my matcha era.
I really tried to lay off of it
when I was having kidney stones,
but I think we're doing better now,
so I'm just back on my matcha kick.
That said, I am being aware
and trying to have some coffee
to mix it up and have some balance.
Now for the goal of the week,
I usually just do a sculpt
in Matt Pilates classes or a former classes,
but I really want to try doing more yoga
and not just for the aesthetic of yoga,
because I really do love that yoga girl aesthetic
that people are trying to display right now,
but more importantly,
I'm loving it because
it just really makes me feel so calm
and at peace,
and I think it's a great way to have that
as like a spiritual thing
and a mind-body connection,
rather than thinking of it as a workout.
And it just helps you ground more
and take things slower.
Another goal that we grayed out for me
is cooking with new proteins.
I just love a good protein,
and I would say I eat it quite a bit,
so I want to learn how to make
new different proteins
and even different types of fish
or meats.
I kind of just stick to the same things.
I love a salmon,
I love a turkey,
I love a chicken,
I love tofu,
I love to try to venture out
and try new different proteins.
But with a sensitive stomach,
it's kind of hard,
so it's very much a trial and error process.
My IBS girls,
if you know you know,
another goal that we grayed out
is to declutter my phone apps.
There's nothing I love more
than having a clean, organized phone.
Sometimes it can get so overwhelming
when you just have a ton of clutter,
or apps, photos on your phone,
or messages,
so it's nice to do just a little refresh,
delete things,
and just clear it out
to have what you really need and want.
And now for the affirmation of the week.
I am stepping into the most successful spring,
I've had so far,
mentally, physically, and career-wise.
I love this so much,
and I know I'm very spring-coded,
I guess, even early on.
I feel like this is still winter right now,
but I feel like we're really leaning into spring,
and so are you guys.
So I just had to add that as the affirmation.
Okay, now for the self-love question,
what have I overcome
that I would have been scared of last year?
I love that question
to reflect on growth
and just how you handle things differently.
Now when it comes to the podcast review,
this review says,
I love this podcast so much,
it's amazing when you feel down or near pick me up.
I listen to it almost every morning
while making my breakfast,
and it helped me a lot in my day to day life.
Thank you so much for your review.
I love how you listen to it while you make your breakfast.
It just is like the perfect little morning routine,
but that makes me so happy to hear,
and if you want to be featured on next week's episode,
make sure to leave a podcast review
over Apple podcasts,
and leave a rating over Spotify.
Without further ado,
it is time to get into today's episode.
This is how to become your own best friend,
solo date ideas,
and just love being alone,
and of course romanticizing your life.
Some people may think this is vague
to become your best friend,
or solo dates,
and all those topics
that I feel like have been talked about
subtly the past few years,
but let me remind you something.
Do you really love being alone?
Does spending time alone feel like a chore?
Do you not know what to do when you are alone?
And before we get into this,
let me just preface by saying,
there is nothing wrong with wanting to spend time with somebody.
That is beautiful.
That is a part of human nature,
and it is gorgeous to want to spend time with somebody.
That means you enjoy them,
or if you want to be hanging out with somebody,
or see somebody,
or love having a significant other,
whatever it is, or a best friend,
that's beautiful and amazing,
and you should be doing that.
Human connection and social connection is so important,
but also something just as important
is learning how to spend time with yourself.
So you can do both at the same time,
but knowing you are capable,
spend time alone in an extended amount of time.
It doesn't matter how long,
but knowing you can do that,
and you want to do that,
is something that is so beautiful and sacred,
and you really need to be practicing it
in order to get to that point.
You may be spending time with yourself on solo dates
or doing these things,
and think,
gosh, I hate spending time with myself still.
That is normal, and that is okay.
You aren't gonna love spending time with yourself overnight,
it takes practice, it takes courage,
and let me just say,
going out and having your own date
is not always the most easy thing,
being alone and having a picnic,
or going to a restaurant and saying for one.
Those things may feel intimidating,
but I promise you,
the more you do it, the easier it becomes.
But when it comes to being your own best friend,
let me remind you that
if you are uncomfortable being alone,
that is good,
because you have to be uncomfortable
in order to grow.
If you're always in your comfort zone,
you're never gonna grow,
you're never gonna evolve.
So, embrace it,
embrace being uncomfortable.
It's better to feel than to feel nothing at all.
And let me just say that again,
it is better to feel uncomfortable
than feel nothing at all.
Feeling and feeling emotion
and feeling uncomfortable,
sad, scared,
like that's being alive.
We want to feel those things,
because that reminds us,
oh, we're alive on this earth.
How beautiful is it that we get to experience these emotions?
Okay, now I've gotten a little deep,
but let's just go back to what I was saying,
but stop waiting on a text,
or stop waiting on the plans,
or noise,
or somebody to reach out
to finally feel like you're excited to do something.
Start doing it yourself,
and learn,
you don't need to wait for anybody else
in order to go on that trip you want to go on,
or go shopping.
Do anything.
Take yourself to that restaurant
that you've been wanting to try.
It's all in your hands.
You were just like somebody else.
When you ask your friend,
do you want to go to that new cafe
or that new bookstore?
And they say,
no, ask yourself.
Jaden, do you want to go to this bookstore
and this cafe
and have a little day out of it?
Yes, you do.
So don't wait on somebody else
in order to go do it.
Do it with yourself.
Also, another benefit of being your own best friend
and learning to love how to be alone
is you stop chasing the wrong people.
You stop feeling time
just to avoid assignments
and you start building a life
that you actually like.
When you're emotionally independent,
you're going to make better decisions
and relationships for your friends,
that you're significant other,
your family, everything.
You're going to make better decisions
and know,
do I really want to be doing this today?
Do I really want to be hanging out with this person?
Or am I just trying to fill my time?
Or do I feel like I just need to be hanging out with them?
You're going to be less reactive to loneliness,
so you're not going to start feeling lonely as often.
You may be alone, but not lonely.
And lastly, you're not going to tolerate things
just to avoid being by yourself.
A lot of times that we put down our boundaries
and put down our standards
to have that company to avoid us being alone and feeling lonely.
So you would be choosing people for fulfillment
and actually because you enjoy being with them
and not from emptiness.
There is nothing more powerful than knowing
that you are capable of being alone with yourself.
Also, there is nothing to be ashamed about
if you do feel disconnected
when you're alone or you're craving validation
or you feel just unwanted.
There is nothing wrong with that.
And that's the most normal feeling to feel.
When someone's not texting us or not calling us
or not making plans with us,
it's human nature for us to automatically feel sad
and not wanted.
And we're like, why are we not hanging out
or why are you not making plans?
It is so normal and it's okay if you feel lonely.
But that's why these things
are going to just help you feel more peaceful, spacious,
and grounded,
and knowing that you're capable of being alone.
So let's talk about how to become your own best friend.
So first up, which is one of the most important things
and I always say this, everything stems from your mindset.
It really does.
So you have to talk to yourself like someone you would respect.
If you are looking at yourself in the mirror
and thinking, gosh, I'm so ugly, gosh, I hate myself,
or you're constantly being so hard on yourself,
being so negative towards yourself,
would you say that to your best friend?
No.
So if you're trying to become your own best friend,
you can't be rude and negative
and so disheartening to your best friend.
Because I know someone you love
or one of your best friends, your significant other,
whatever it is,
you're going to be talking to them like you love them
and with love and care and respect.
So why are you disrespecting yourself?
Even if you're just thinking it to yourself, stop.
Rewire your thoughts and start talking to yourself
the way you would to your best friend.
This is something that I think is one of the most important things
which we briefly touched on,
but start doing things without waiting for someone.
This is where solo hobbies and solo dates come in,
but you have to start doing things
that you actually want without waiting for the company.
Be your own company.
You are more than enough.
It's going to feel uncomfortable at first
and like you're lost and confused
and how does this work?
But I promise you it'll soon become peaceful
and it'll become so easy that you don't even think about it.
You're going to think, oh, I'm just going to go
take myself to a coffee shop and read a book right now.
I'm going to go to the new restaurant that I've been wanting to try
and take myself to dinner.
These things that seem so imaginable
and hard right now for solo dates
and doing things alone become so easy
after you continuously do it
and put yourself in this position
where you're not the most comfortable.
And if you're worried about what the people around you are thinking,
let me just tell you,
nobody's thinking about you being alone.
Do you understand, even if you go eat at a restaurant alone,
nobody's thinking, oh, look at that pork girl alone at the restaurant.
Oh, why is that girl alone at the restaurant?
Nobody's thinking that.
They are in their own heads and thinking about their own problems,
their own life, their own plans for the rest of the day.
So don't think so much about what other people are thinking about.

First spring, one of my favorite things has been my nails.
And one of my nails are done
because sometimes I just don't have time to go
to the nail salon to do my nails.
So I'll do them at home.
The funny thing is I actually bring the same nail polish
to the nail salon
because it's just that good and I swear by it.
I do the Olive and June gel polish and LHG
and then a gel top coat.
So I use the Olive and June Manny system.
Everything you need in one box
for a salon quality manicure.
I love how it doesn't chip
and it lasts for seven or more days.
Not only that,
it comes down to being only $2 per manicure,
which is a lot more affordable
than going to the nail salon.
But it has just been my current spring of session
because it just makes doing your nails at home so easy.
So if you're looking for a new manicure routine,
I really recommend it.
You can visit oliveandjune.com slash pretty 20
for 20% off your first system.
That's O-L-I-V-E-A-N-D.
.com slash P-R-E-T-T-Y-2-0
for 20% off your first system.
Now let's talk a little about the aesthetic side
of being alone and doing things fun with yourself.
Because like I always say,
for me to do things that challenge me,
I always have to tie something aesthetic to it.
It just makes me enjoy it more and inspired.
Like when I wanna achieve something,
let's say I have to really do and buckle down
on a full clean in my room,
I will go and put on YouTube videos of Rose Cleaning,
or I'll go on Pinterest and look at clean room and Spowe.
Those things, I'm surrounding my environment
of what I consume for things that I wanna reflect
into my own life.
So you have to realize you have to start consuming
what you want your environment and lifestyle to look like.
So maybe start looking on Pinterest more
instead of scrolling on Instagram or TikTok
or only following people on Instagram and TikTok
that actually feel that motivation
and keep you inspired.
Maybe start replacing some music with podcasts.
Just surrounding yourself and the environment
that you wanna have in your life
is one of the best things to do for motivation and inspiration.
And I'm telling you that's gonna really help your journey
of learning how to become your best friend
when you watch videos of girls doing solo dates.
I even started doing like a solo date series
on my TikTok and Instagram of me doing solo dates.
And I talk about a lot of those ideas on the podcasts already.
But sometimes seeing other people do it,
it's gonna be easier for you to start doing it.
Okay, back to what I was saying about the set aside of being alone.
Some examples of things that you can start
by doing things alone, which aren't even solo dates.
These are just enjoying how to take things slow
and enjoy things that you do with yourself.
So it's not even going out having a picnic
or going to a restaurant, going to the movies.
These are just everyday things that you can do from home.
So in the morning, something you could do for yourself
is have a set routine.
That could be having your match out or your coffee
and then journaling while drinking it,
opening your windows, stretching outside,
getting that morning sunlight, make a pretty breakfast bowl,
maybe some oatmeal or some Greek yogurt,
and then go on a little walk.
I find having a set routine for yourself
can be one of the best ways to begin introing
at solo dates to yourself because you're spending time alone
but it's from home and just doing things where it's like,
okay, you know, this is for myself.
I'm doing this because I enjoy it for me.
Now when it comes to a little evening time with yourself,
maybe you do your shower and you do your body care,
find your body scrub or your lotion
that you love and look forward to using
and that can be like a little highlight.
And then maybe you want to light a candle,
you can maybe brew some tea.
Even just like picking out the tea you're going to have
that evening can feel so special.
And of course, we love a little dessert bowl,
so maybe you want a sweet and little savory bowl
and then something that you could do,
it just get like one of those little bedside tables
or a little like bed tray.
And lay it all out, your tea and your dessert and your book.
And it just is so nice and calming.
You could do some journaling, some needle pointing,
something that I have been loving to do right now
is water coloring.
It is so fun.
It's like painting but it's like the little water colors
and that can be a little fun thing that you look forward to doing.
Again, these are like little practice things
that you can do that are intentional
and that really just help you set yourself up for
enjoying time with yourself.
Now if you're someone who has been doing this for a while
and already kind of like are familiar
or comfortable with solo dates.
So starting off with outdoor ones
because I've been really loving just being outdoors,
especially for spring, this is perfect for springtime.
Go to the farmer's market.
Farmers markets, I'm sure there's one in your area
and just walking around the farmer's market.
It is the most comfortable thing to do
as like a first solo date
because nobody's looking at you.
You feel like you just won, Den,
and it actually makes you have a little activity.
Okay, what am I going to make for dinner?
What am I going to make for lunch?
And you can gather this produce
and it just is a really nice thing to do.
Another thing is go on a walk.
So you can go on a walk or a hike
and if you're going to hike alone, be cautious, of course.
But go on a walk, have a podcast
and maybe a matcha in hand or walk by the beach.
Another thing you can do is have a picnic in the park.
So maybe bring your book or bring some music,
do something where it just plans a little date for yourself.
Another thing you could do is do some outdoor yoga.
You can literally just go in your backyard
or the front yard outside anywhere,
lay out your yoga mat and just sit with yourself,
do some stretching, do some yoga,
and it's so grounding
and also just being away from your phone
and not scrolling or feeling tied down to something
feels so refreshing and nice.
I honestly feel like it just clears my head so much
or when you eat your meals, okay, sorry.
This is actually separate then solo dates.
But when you eat your meals,
stop going on your phone or watching TV.
Of course, it's fine sometimes if you want to just eat in bed
and I love like a dessert in bed and I love doing that.
But sometimes when we are just always eating
with our phone in front of us
or watching TV or entertainment,
it can kind of feel like we're not even knowing
what we're eating or we're rushing or we're not thinking.
So it's nice to just be present with yourself
and be with your food, be with yourself
and enjoy it as is.
Let that be activity alone
and then let almost everything be in activity independently.
So eat your food and then go after watch your TV
or watch your movie.
So everything doesn't blend into one.
That also is great if you feel like you have very repetitive,
broken record days like you're having the same thing,
you wake up, you go to work,
you eat dinner and you go to bed.
Having things kind of separated if you can
so when you get home, don't go on your phone
and have things playing all the time
while you're doing your workout or eating your food.
Try to have things separate.
So it makes you feel like you got the most out of your day.
Now when it comes to the creative aspect of soludate,
it's something that you can do which I love is pottery class.
Or you can do a painting pottery class.
There's a lot of like painting ceramic spots
and I'm sure there's one in your area.
Another thing you could do is go on a color walk.
So when you're on your color walk,
you can kind of pick colors out and think,
okay, I'm going to look for the color yellow.
Find everything that looks yellow.
It just helps you be mindful and to find a little game
that you can play with yourself.
Another thing is journaling at a cafe.
And maybe you can even challenge yourself
when you go to the cafe is journal with no music,
no headphones, and just be present with yourself.
Something else you can do is go to the thrift store.
I feel like thrift stores are so fine
because they're so entertaining with all different things.
And let's be real.
It's a much better prices than retail therapy
from shopping online or shopping at stores.
When it comes to relaxing things
you can do independently with yourself.
You can have a spa day at home
or you can go to get your nails done
or have a spa massage date with yourself somewhere.
But it's nice to do it at home as well.
So you can do a little spa day
and get like some cute little flower petals
and put them in like a little foot soak bath.
You can put some like Greek yogurt cucumbers.
Do the whole thing for yourself
to just make you feel very Pinterest-esque and enjoyable.
Like literally plant a spa day at home for yourself.
Make your cucumber water, make your lemon water,
and just it makes you so relaxed.
And it just is a fun little thing to do.
You know your younger self would be thriving if you do that.
Another thing is have a bath and a book.
Put some pretty floating flowers in your bath
or add some coconut milk in your bath.
Something to soak in and then get your book.
Have a candle lit and like a nice fragrance going.
Something just to get you really relaxed in the bath
and that can be such a nice thing to do independently with yourself.
And with that maybe try a new tea.
It's so nice when you have like a new set tea
or something you can have after dinner
that just is so relaxing.
Start doing daily stretches.
So maybe you work from home or maybe you work somewhere
whenever you get a break or a moment when you can.
Go outside in the sunlight or outside whatever weather it is.
And just start stretching and take the time away from your phone.
Get some fresh air.
And that can be one of the perfect fuel to just get your day going again.
I honestly feel like sometimes the perfect energy drink
is a green juice and going outside and just getting fresh air.
Another thing is cooking a new recipe.
I said I wanted to start doing more recipes
and trying out new like proteins start cooking with.
So maybe pick a maybe buy yourself a new recipe book
and treat yourself and find a recipe that you want to try doing.
That's another really fun thing that you can do with yourself.
Okay, this is one of my favorite things to do when it comes to errands.
So we all have errands and chores we have to do during the week.
But these are the perfect ways to romanticize them
where it makes it like something exciting to do with yourself.
When you go grocery shopping, put on a podcast or put on some music.
So don't forget to bring your headphones
and maybe have a matcha or a coffee with you.
It just makes it so much more enjoyable.
Next is if you get yourself weekly flowers,
maybe go find different flowers.
It can be from outside or if you go shopping for them.
Get the flowers and make yourself a little flower bunch.
So make it like a bouquet and make it exactly how you like it.
Bunch them together.
You can get actually like a treat or Joe's back
or any like paper grocery bag and tie it together
to make it literally like a bouquet for yourself.
Now when it comes to organizing your space,
again, get your matcha put on a podcast, light a candle.
But also prior to doing that, look on Pinterest
and try to find what you want your room to look like
so it's going to inspire you to clean your room.
And then put on like a YouTube video
or someone cleaning the room.
So it just makes you feel like excited to do it
rather than feeling like a chore.
Same thing when it comes to your car.
Look at pretty cars and like how put together they are in organized
and that's going to inspire you for ideas for your car.
That's why there are no excuses
into learning how to romanticize your life
and to loving alone because we can even turn our chores
and errands that we have to do
and to fun events with ourselves.
You don't have to be going to a five star restaurant
and spending hundreds of dollars on new clothes
in order to have a fun date with yourself.
It can literally be your chores
that you have to do in between school and work
or it can be the things you have to do at home.
Even when you do your homework,
putting on a podcast,
putting a lighting a candle,
or having a nice body lotion on,
making whatever event or chore
or thing you have to do an enjoyable time.
So think to yourself,
if you had a whole day alone,
would you enjoy it?
And if the answer is no,
think about what is missing.
Is it a hobby?
Is it a routine?
Your environment?
Having movement?
Creative outlets?
What is it that you need to add to your routine
and to your life to start enjoying being alone?
Your life should be something you enjoy participating in.
This is one of my favorite things that I've heard before
but think of your life as a portfolio.
Instead of everything being around relationships,
productivity and work,
you also want to have in your life hobbies,
creativity, movement, slow time,
and having quiet moments,
and learning, exploring,
and having lessons.
Having a well-rounded life
and having balance is so much more beautiful
and a well-fifilling life
than just having work, relationships,
and productivity.
So remember,
when you start doing things alone and independently,
it may feel awkward at first,
you may reach for your phone
or you may text a friend,
but you have to remember,
if you feel uncomfortable,
that's good because it means you're growing.
Being alone is not a punishment,
it's a freedom.
And it's a way that we can be capable
of loving our life independently.
Another great quote you can remember is,
if you can become your own best friend,
you carry a sense of home with you wherever you go.
And that is something that nobody can take away from you.
Remember, you were the only person
who's going to spend day one
and the last day of your life with.
So there's no better time than now
to become your own best friend.
I love you so much
and I hope you enjoyed this episode
as much as I did recording it.
It just made me feel so inspired.
And now after this,
I'm going to go take myself
on a little self-care day
because we are our own best friends.
So please feel free to tag me
in your TikTok,
your Instagram stories,
your Instagram posts,
whatever it is,
feel free to tag me
of you listening to the podcast
or how you take yourself on a solo date.
I would absolutely love to see it and repost.
And I hope you have the best day.
I'm so grateful for you
and every day is a chance to come
with your own best friend
and do not forget to stay
a busy yet pretty.
