And today let my Camarque expect the guys here on a Labor Day edition of afternoon drive taking a calls to what six four seven four 0092 Obviously the big Conversation outside over the college football weekend and what's going to dominate All throughout this season is how the quarterbacks are doing Towers Manning is doing a Talonore sellers Dante Moore Julian say and That that as many different guys as you can name and see we're going to at least consider I mean Michael I found myself looking at guy I was watching a lot of week zero games I actually wrote it right down in my notes at but just like random random games and being like That guy is pretty interesting like the Hawaii Stanford game the Jacksonville State quarterback look good for Yeah, big time You know the US the San Jose State quarterback. I thought looked really really solid. I was watching Georgetown College in Butler

How many different random teams can I name off? It's all gonna be quarterbacks because that's the answer that we all that's the question that we all don't have the answer to and that we haven't had here since Since Bernie Kozak Is there any room left in your brain for anything else with that top overall pick then a quarterback? No, not for me. It has to be a quarterback going away no matter what look and I I understand I saw a lot of This was a hot button topic, especially because of how well Jeremiah Smith played this weekend Give it away already or building them up a little bit you kind of teased it before we got people don't listen sometimes I mean look find Leonard Moore like the quarterback from Notre Dame like you want me to go there like there's it's a really loaded draft And a lot of different positions But when you need a quarterback when you trade miles Garrett to get said quarterback You are doing yourself a disservice if you don't take a quarterback with your first pick Anthony the odds of hitting on a quarterback with your first pick in the top 10 in the top 15 I understand they're still risk attached But the odds of hitting on one are so much higher than they are if you take one anywhere else in the draft and the Browns for too long

I've been putting this putting this in the rear view mirror and saying we'll deal with it down the line They took two quarterbacks one in the third one in the fifth and they took one in the sixth and people like well They've drafted quarterbacks the last three years. Yeah, but not they really haven't until you take the guy in the first round And probably the top 10 you have not taken a swing at quarterback the Browns have not taken a swing at quarterbacks since Baker may feel Then 28th Walt Dishon but like in the draft since 2018 well, what's your what's your top 20? Stat the you throughout to me the other day So this is when I saw on Twitter and I've been saying it pretty much every single time I've been on the air since then And I continue to repeat the Browns have drafted a quarterback in the top 20 of the draft twice since they returned to the league in 1999 that was Tim couch with the first pick that they had when they came back and it was Baker may feel the 2018 not just top 10 top 20 both of those quarterbacks have taken the Browns are their only playoff appearances since obviously Joe Flacco had the one in there But Tim couch got them there he did not play in that playoff game They lost it with Kelly Holcomb and obviously Baker got them for their only playoff win since they came back in

99 the two quarterbacks they took number one overall So I'm just saying the math is there so I was watching the the Ohio State game on on Saturday and again You you always kind of watch it with you know a grain assault in my knowing that it's ball state and obviously the first big test is next week against Texas But it just looked like Jeremiah Smith picked up right where he left off There's not a single step back from him. He's just as fast he feels extra motivated this year too Because I think that he felt he knew that he probably could have been able to go out if it go to the draft last year If they didn't have the stupid rule where it was you know three years in college or whatever I also think that losing in the first round of the playoffs that that totally tore him apart because again He looked like the greatest college wide receiver we've ever seen and he's like how the hell did we not win here? He looks so good that the thought crept into my mind of what would this look like? In a Brown's uniform and then I played out the thought exercise of you take Jeremiah Smith here

And here's the hey, let me let me try my best to not make you come around to the idea because I still believe that they should go quarterback With their top overall pick but just open the door to you You have Jeremiah Smith and you believe that right now he could be an all pro NFL player right right all the favor. Yeah, okay If you get a guy Yeah, if you find your next same Darnell if you find a Mac Jones or if you believe that Kyler Murray is gonna Reclimate himself in Minnesota this year and you give him three to four years on a contract You say you are the starting quarterback We might draft a couple of guys in between here and there but like you are the guy no matter what I believe that a guy like that Could throw to Jeremiah Smith along with all of the other wide receivers that we have and all the other weapons on offense You build up the offensive line how in the world because that not look like a really awesome offense So that we're not Arguing back and forth until kingdom come about competent quarterback play or being the 20th best quarterback in the lead could get you to eight wins

You're arguing for Kyler Murray or Mac Jones throwing to a future All pro whatever Jeremiah Smith is gonna end up being because you're still not answering the quarterback Question like putting a band-aid on it with a temporary starter does not fix the problem. So What it okay, I'll go one step further what if later on in said Band-aid approach you do what really Talented organizations really put together organizations like the Packers and like the Rams have done and taking a first round quarterback when your team's already set and forget Because it feels like we have enough of a core around the team We just need that quarterback quote unquote, but if I can put him you know kind of piecemeal it together with I'm gonna keep saying Mac Jones Just because I like him a lot and I think that if you give him an opportunity like yeah, I argue with it You've heard this spiel plenty of times That if you give him literally the best weapon coming out of the draft this year along with all the guys that we have he's going to be

Good. It's not just gonna be competent Look, this is just This is the easiest way I can put it like when the Browns traded Miles Garrett this off season They told you exactly what they're going to do like there's no change in the plan. They did not trade Miles Garrett for Jeremiah Smith That's not what they did Miles Garrett was the final piece of the price that it took to first of all from the disastrous to Sean Watson trade They're trading Miles Garrett for a franchise quarterback and in their belief That's what they're doing because I Think with how good they're gonna have to be I think they're gonna have to take both first-round picks move up to get their quarterback I don't think they're making two first-round picks this year. I think they're making one I think they're trading up and I think it'll take a quarterback. Yeah, but trading up to who you know, I mean like The jets aren't gonna move off the cards are gonna move off the season play out But what I'm saying like is if you can get I think the Raiders are still gonna be pretty bad They're not gonna take a quarterback again after taking one number one overall. That's not gonna happen like Miami's gonna be bad. I don't think the league will stop them from taking a quarterback

The jets have three number one picks so they could trade up the Cardinals We'll see how it goes with Carson back I don't think Carson back prevents them from taking another one He certainly doesn't but we'll see how much they like him There's a lot of teams out like Tennessee's another another interesting one They just took him word number one like last year so like if they're bad do they take a court? Do they do that? I was also a different coaching staff so this coaching staff might want to get their own you're right But like again, it's only been two years so like do they stick it out with Kim Ward like who knows what teams are gonna be up there for you to go trade with I just And I know this sucks for a lot of people to hear especially like Cleveland fans because look We all watched the buck eyes. We watched Jeremiah Smith You know, he's he's an absolutely phenomenal player and it it sucks to have to take a quarterback in a year where the draft is So good elsewhere, but the draft is also really good at quarterback like we're not we're not saying hey This is the Kenny picket year where you have to take Kenny picket because you need a quarterback and you're passing up on all these other players That's not what this is the quarterback class is going to be loaded

You've just got to get the right guy you've got to get the guy you want the Browns have all the ammunition that they need to get anywhere on the board Counterpoint close your eyes Think about how for how many minutes today we've been arguing about how you feel like this team is too talented To only win four or five games this team is closer to 500 than they are the number one overall pick You already have the team built up and then you just swap out charge you to do a Jeremiah Smith You go get who's a bridge quarterback, but who is that gonna be Anthony Mac Jones? Mac Jones isn't available The diners aren't willing to part way you're gonna give up a second round pick for Mac Jones if I if he's the final piece to a Damn good offense. How many people were saying that the Seahawks were Idiots for signing Sam Darnold how many people have said for bridge quarterback after bridge quarterback that this is a bad idea Hell we're the team that signed Joe Flacco and and we ended up going to the playoffs on a team that was super talented

Elsewhere you don't need a if you're not gonna have Patrick my homes or Josh Allen or one of the tippy top guys You got to find other ways to win in the league So I go back to the 2020 draft with this because and I understand it's not the same I understand how talented Jeremiah Smith is 2020 draft chase young was considered like the slam dunk number one prospect There were there were good quarterbacks in that class But everyone's like chase youngs the best player. This is a generational led rusher You know what the bangles did they stuck to their guns and they took the quarterback. Yeah, how's that worked out for them? They made the Super Bowl. How's it worked out for him since when they didn't build the rest of their team look But they got to March a year later, but you know why do March ace works because Joe burrows there Have they taken to March ace with Andy Dalton the quarterback? That's not the same team you can't win without the quarterback Anthony I'm sick and tired of putting the quarterback in the rearview mirror. I I don't want this organization saying Hey, look we need to be patient at quarterback. They've taken two quarterbacks in the top 20 since I've been alive Oh, and once since I've been alive, but two since they came back in 1999

I'm sick of it. I'm sick of them not prioritizing the position because plain and simple That's not what they've been doing I'm not saying that they're gonna totally neglect the position and again I don't know Kyle Murray is probably I don't know if Minnesota is gonna keep him long term And then there's gonna be guys are did we think that I know two is like washed at this point But did we think the two was gonna be available this offseason? Did we think that Kyler was the year that say again? We'll keep going back to San Arnold like Jimmy has them is the one that mentioned to Sean Watson being our own same Darnell as a potential for this season Well, why don't we go get a guy that's actually still got something left in the tank what I'm gonna give you two scenarios And you tell me which one you'd be more upset about you draft Jeremiah Smith, but you miss out on archmaning And he is he turns out to be a franchise quarterback top five quarterback in the NFL or you draft Arche Manning and Jeremiah Smith turns out to be a top five receiver in the NFL Which one are you more bummed about? I mean you're obviously more bummed about the long term 15 year quarterback exactly that's all that needs to be said

That's how significant this is so you are just like absolutely not Jeremiah Smith could score four touchdowns every game for the rest of the season Also, anything I don't think they're gonna be nice. They're not gonna be nearly bad enough to get Jeremiah Smith Because like you're not gonna be able to trade up for Jeremiah Smith Like the way if the Raiders are the worst team in the league this year with Fernando Mendoza and they get the number one overall pick What do you think the Raiders are doing? They're either trade they're probably trading out, but they're gonna trade out to a spot Below the quarterback threshold where they can still take Jeremiah Smith as the first non quarterback off the board Or they're just staying at number one and taking Jeremiah Smith. Yeah, see that's in my thought exercise Jeremiah Smith for Nana Mendoza that's what they're gonna say in my thought exercise It was like you know the first four picks or quarterbacks off that you know you get the Cardinals the dolphins the jets They figure things out and the net number four Jeremiah Smith goes He's probably the first non quarterback. I think quarterbacks micro number one two three maybe even four this year Like that's how good this class is and a lot of teams need one I just the Browns have to be one of those teams like they think we can't keep pushing this down the road If even if you've got Tyler Murray or Mac Jones in here it's like a two-year fix

Guess what two years you have Jeremiah Smith and then we're back in quarterback hell well That gives you still don't have anybody that gives you two years to get your first round pick on On another quarterback just like type they just did with Ty Simpson just like uh Jordan love a couple of years ago. Ty Simpson He played one good preseason game against third string players. Okay, Jordan love. Uh, Jalen Hertz was a second-round pick They didn't start him you're talking about outliers. You're not talking about patterns like Jalen Hertz Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy are the three outliers. I didn't say that I didn't say the last two names I said Jalen Hertz was a high in second-round pick and uh, Jordan love and Ty Simpson's the most recent one this year And also it was still tough 15, but if I'm in a mirror yeah, but exactly if I'm in a mirror Really good organizations then I think that's a that's a already had a franchise quarterback's in place when they drafted him Though Anthony they had Matthew Stafford there they earned Rogers in green Bay and we'll have Mac Jones And we will have Mac Jones to what's something wrong with you two one six four seven four double a 92 just for the record I would like to take a quarterback first overall that's that's my plan

I'm just trying to see if Michael has any room in his This is the why I'm fascinated that this is the one thing where you're like But I don't know I can see both ways. Nope. You this is the this is the one marker where you're not Switzerland Very interesting and this comes from the same guy I wanted to drive say one Barclay number one over on 2018 and take the quarterback Let's just dumb you don't take a running back first overall I thought it was different because we had the number one and the number four pie We could have taken Barclay and Josh Allen. How much better do you think we'd be right now had we done that? Josh Allen would have ended up like Johnny Mansell here on the field not off the field That was a wild statement You know, I don't know a quarterback that was exciting college that didn't I don't know you have a better comp for him Not Johnny Mansell like if you want to say Brandon Wheaton okay, but like sure No, all righty. Brady Quinn Brady Quinn Connor Shaw all right Then when we come with I don't even know where T's and X. Oh We'll talk a little bit more should or Sanders and just Sean Watson and looking ahead at this upcoming season Anthony

Late Michael Markock 92 to do the fan Anthony late Michael Markock spec with guys here on 92 through the fan They're gonna keep the air show in town like once Burke goes away, right You're asking the wrong guy Okay, where would they put it in don't you work at a place that would know this Maybe what where would it where would it go? Um The hell of a point. I don't know so you ask a question Look I just stupid answers. It's so much fun to see this week And like at the other place coming out of commercial breaks we were Showing the air show they're doing loop deloops. That's a lot of fun. I don't want that to go away The loops loop doll loops. Yes. All right two one six four seven four 0092 Todd Munkin named his captains today for the entire season no just for game one they are not doing season captains

Why why is this normal? Is this something that normal teams do hunkin? I think said this is what he prefers Why does he prefer it though? Because he knows that in in two weeks in three weeks Dishonel Watson is gonna get benched and they already gave Dishonel Watson to see I think that's part of it I mean, remember last year Joe Flacco was named captain and he played four games And then we didn't have a quarterback captain the rear trade is the quarterback I understand people get mad like oh your quarterback doesn't need to be captain Yes, he does like your quarterback has to be a captain on the team Lucky you Michael Dishonel Watson is one of your four or five captains And I believe the quarterback will be whoever it is will be the captain every single week I think this is just the way of yes as you said avoiding Not naming Dishonel captain for the year when he may not actually be around the team in the back Part of the year and we can just say the quarterback is the captain. It just depends on who the quarterback is Well, I mean this is the same player who hit the backup quarterback in James Winston was doing pre-gain and post-game speeches He seemed like the leader in the locker room. Obviously. We've talked at nauseam about the leadership void

That has been in this organization This is also the same team different coaching staff that gave him a game ball after he likes stunk in his first win with the Browns So and Nick Chubb had you know a hundred and fifty million rushing guards and they didn't give it to him I I just I don't So you don't you don't really care that Dishonel Watson's a captain I mean I knew it was gonna happen your quarterback needs to be a captain. I don't think he needs well I think he does. I think what it's Dishonel Watson again It's just another indication to me that that Todd Munkett doesn't really care about what is his fans thing Okay, but again, if we're talking about a season in which Dishonel Watson probably is gonna start 17 games If Dishonel's a captain when Shador is playing quarterback, you can't have that. I don't know I'm not saying that move the captain C. Yes, like you can't do that I would love just do the weekly captain thing where he gets named captains every week and the quarterback will pretty much get named every single week And then once it shifts just shifts to Shador Shador is captain or if Dylan Gabriel starts Dylan Gabriel's a captain or like whatever your quarterback needs to be a captain

That's just I guess I'm old school. I don't even know what to think about it It's the same way college look at all these college teams the quarterback is always captain. He has to be captain Yeah, but the quarterback in many college programs isn't booed relentlessly before they even take a step on the field and It kind of seems like they're working around the idea of him getting booed when he comes out at Huntington being field Okay, if you had two offensive captains and you're not gonna need me quarterback captain Quinchon Judkins I'm not named Quinchon captain. Why? I mean for I Why would we name with Quinchon Judkins a captain because he's one of the bright spots That's really good on the offensive side of the ball and he's not a rookie part of the reason that people don't like to Sean Being named captain is the off-the-field stuff do we remember last summer with Quinchon Judkins? No, I get that but I mean You know we're gonna name Jerry Judy captain like Harold fan and fine, okay? Harold fan and an offensive lineman promise none of your offensive lineman and have ever been here before Harold fan and and Spencer Finoe and then on the defensive side Carson Swaystinger I would rather name rookie and I would rather name rocket standards as a captain then to Sean Watson

Because he's going to be one of the players that goes out on the coin toss. It's just another Spotlight where the entire world is looking at you and only you in a Browns uniform. I don't love that any Attention on this guy. I don't like whatsoever the team loves them though And like the team does view him as a captain I and look I can't say anything for how the team is and I get like we discussed Jerry Judy's probably a big fan of him And I know they have to rally around the starting quarterback, but like as a fan though the captains are supposed to be the guy You want to talk about old school? The captains are supposed to be the guys to me that everybody on the fan base can rally around that Those are the guys that you buy jerseys of that you know They're gonna be consistent parts of this team Community leaders to Sean Watson has been none of those things whatsoever. It just feels like they're just giving him the captain See the the sea on his chest because he's the one that beat out should or Sanders. They're naming the quarterback captain That's what they're doing with the weekly quarterback thing because then the moment should or stepson should always gonna have to see

But I also don't really like I mean there's I don't do you need an offensive captain like is that a hard and fast rule in the NFL or Is that just like the way things are you can name as many as you want? I think the Rams named like seven captains Oh, I did see that also a captain, but like They have like seven captains so like there's no limit Most teams do two offense to defense in a specialist like that's normal like five team captains That's in but for almost every team the quarterback is one like cam wore last year was a rookie number one overall pick He was named captain because he's the quarterback well because he was going away to start and again I I don't love how quickly you're just excusing all the outside noise with to Sean Watson Like I get that they don't have to worry about that. It's why do they care what the fans think about their captains They clearly don't and that's the thing is that this is just another indication that they do not care what you think Todd monkey is said at time and again since he named just Sean Watson the starting quarterback that he don't care What the guys in five thirty five thing he does not care what the guys on ninety two three the fan thing He cares simply about what's going on in the locker room But I there's been no olive branch extended to the fan base. Well, what's so ever about hey man

We understand the pain in the anguish you have gone through since this guy's been here in 2022 But we just don't give a damn well and look and this is one of those topics that like As much as it would be nice to you know have a fan base that gets listed to the moment that an organization starts listening to the fan base They should fold I'm not saying to name it you shouldn't be making decisions based on what your fan base wants like in terms of the on field product like that The moment you do that you should fold what does it want is putting a C on a guy's on a guy's chest Or giving a game ball after a horrific performance because we need to boost the guy's ego that's already making $230 million and as a wife and his entire life set up for him travels God knows where in the globe the second that he gets out of Cleveland Which is the second that he wants to why do we need to continue to appease that like what is the point? I think that's the point for me. It's just this added frustration that Whether or not it actually needs to be there. I don't know But it's just something it's just another tiny little

Twisting of the knife that to Sean Watson's not only going to be the starting quarterback But he's going to be a captain and we're going to continue to feed this idea that everything's okay Everything's not okay the fan base basically booed him off the field the last time he was over here They're starting him part and parcel this Todd Munkins words because they're starting this season with two road games I just don't get it so but So we started this conversation by saying why are they having weekly captains If you want an olive branch, I think that kind of is because what Todd Munkins telling you is to Sean Watson's not a permanent captain We're not having any permanent captains. Okay, so just Sean Watson's not a permanent captain He's just a captain for this week He might I mean he will be a captain as long as he's the starter because the quarterback will be a captain But he's not a captain all year And I think that kind of is that kind of reading the room and being like hey We can't name to Sean Watson a full season captain also consider that he's not going to be on the field the whole year Well, are they doing that as an olive branch or because they know that there's a big question mark as to whether or not

He's going to be the starting quarterback every year You're never getting the answer so we can speculate on it either way But like if you want if you want at least something to grasp on to he's not coming out saying hey DeShaw Watson's a permanent captain and everyone else is weekly captains like you know he's saying we're having weekly captains Chosen on by the coaches DeShaw Watson is a captain this week doesn't making his quarterback next week He will be but it's weekly captains then when Shador is the starting quarterback guess what? Should her standards as a captain because he's the quarterback and that's just what it should be like again Call me old school call me all this stuff stuff It's a bad bad look when your quarterback is not a captain I mean, you know Somehow function for how many you know years since the shaw's been here where he isn't been the captain Yes, he's been the captain every single year. He's been the starter. Okay. Well, that's that's the case It's true last year. He wasn't because he wasn't available to play and the first year he was here He's not named captain Judge Kobe resett was because Kobe resett was starting quarterback the starting quarterback Is always named captain like every team in the NFL? Okay, it's just the way this goes like I I understand people can get upset about it Guys, it's a sea on his chest. It matters to the team. It doesn't matter to you. I think it does

Because he's the he's the first like representation of the Browns when they go out for the coin toss. Oh wow It's a coin toss like it's a sea on his chest Like I understand for a lot of people lack of fan understanding is upsetting me I what I'm saying is I don't know why you guys thought he wasn't gonna be named captain like on what planet because this is a brown We're gonna name him a captain here for the last how many years and I'll get no I know that you were in Michigan, but like this is the guy that's caught us how much crap I'm trying not to swear and the guy that causes so much angst he I'm sorry He basically called you out after we booed him which we as fans are allowed to do And then they went on and named him the starting quarterback and then they gave him the sea They are not there. They are discounting everything that has happened. Yeah, I gotta break two one six four seven four Double a ninety two we'll be back in five
