Some deep dive thoughts on the Texas defense coming your way in segment two and then some injury updates coming out of the win over Ohio State to wrap up today's show. But first three questions that I can confidently say that Texas answered in their 24-23 come

from behind win over Ohio State. And then towards the end of the segment, two more questions that I'm close to declaring as answered, but can't fully do it just yet. We'll start with the three that have been answered. Number one, has Texas fixed the run game? I think the answer is yes. Now, you look at the box score from Saturday's win. 41 carries 141 yards. That's just 3.4 yards of carry. Not incredible numbers. And it won't be the most productive day that Texas will have on the ground this season. But a few things. Number one, you can just tell that there is a difference in these running backs versus the running backs that Texas had in 2025. Steve Sarkies and hit the transfer portal hard in the off season. Obviously made a coaching change, bring an Ninja Barger Luke as the new running backs coach, letting go of Chad Scott after just one season in Austin, but more burst, more juice, more explosiveness, more make him miss ability, more in the passing game and goal to go situations. These Texas running backs brought it on Saturday.

And I think it's interesting despite the fact that the long horns were down pretty much the entire game, they actually ran the ball more than they threw it, which shows a trust in the run game. Texas fans thought Steve Sarkies and abandoned the run too often in 2025. And in there were some cases where the fans were absolutely right. I thought Sark did abandon the run game more than he needed to, even though it was as inconsistent as it was this time around again, even when the game situation might have forced some coaches to just throw the ball on every single snap, right? Panic, oh, we have to pick this up through the air. I don't trust our running backs to pick up yards on the ground. And to get us back in this game, Texas did that and it worked. And then the short yard and stuff I mentioned that earlier, you know, two one yard rushing touchdowns on the last couple of drives of the game that might not sound like much, but for Texas in recent years, that has not always been easy. Hollywood's mother's is a dude. You can let the box score lie to you. 21 carry 74 yards, three and a half yards of carry, or you can actually factor in the

context of his carries. He was and is terrific. Relic Brown made a couple of really bad mistakes. The fumble on the first play of the game, the clock management or just the lack of situational awareness right before half time where you ran out of bounds to yard short of the line to gain in an effort to stop the clock. Those were horrible mistakes. There's no doubt, but he's a dynamic player who had some key runs late average more than five yards per carry. A lot of good from the Texas running backs, give the offensive line credit. I thought they did a tremendous job creating some holes against a very talented defensive front. A lot to like from the way the long horns ran the ball and they did it without Derek Cooper, who is going to be a factor in that running back room as his freshman year goes along. Question number two, who's the left guard? It's not the guy we expected, but the horns have their answer at left guard and that's Dylan Zakorski. You know, I feel bad for Lauren Seymour, right? He got hurt during fall camp. He missed time. He's still not 100 percent, but his injury opened the door through Dylan Zakorski and

Zakorski just busted it down. Now, those two guys split reps at left guard pretty much 50, 50 in the season opener, but against Ohio State, Zakorski played every single snap at left guard and he didn't just hold up. He played really well. He finished with the highest pass blocking grade of any of the five Texas starting offensive lineman. He did really well blocking for the run as well. And again, he more than held his own against one of the best defensive fronts that the Long Morts will see all season long. This was not just, okay, let's see what you can do against UTSA. This was a really big atmosphere against the best opponent you've ever seen in your life. Hey, we're giving you the opportunity to play first. Can you hold on to the job? It's yours if you keep it. If you don't, we've got this other guy. We're ready to bring in off the bench and we're going to keep this rotation going. It's a Korski played so well. Texas didn't even think about going to Lawrence Seymour in that game on Saturday night. There was still a left guard question going into Saturday. There is no left guard question right now.

Number three, and this is probably definitely the most important question that got answered on Saturday night. Can't Steve Sarakesian beat the best of the best? The answer is yes. Look, five of the last 10 games that Steve Sarakesian has coached have been against top 10 opponents. And before Saturday, he was three and one in those previous four games. But beating Oklahoma, Texas, A&M and Vanderbilt, it's not the same as beating Ohio State. OU and A&M are chasing Texas. The long ones have been ahead of those programs for a while now. Beating them is always fun. Don't get me wrong. It's always an accomplishment. But expect Texas to win those games. Vanderbilt, I know they were really good last season, but it's Vanderbilt. Ohio State's a different beast. We all know that. They'd been a thorn in the side for Steve Sarakesian in his last couple of years. I said it last week. This game was important for a lot of people. It was more important for Steve Sarakesian than anybody else on either team or either coaching staff. His legacy, his reputation, everything was on the line for him. I know it's a regular season game.

I know which week two. And I know when Stark loses his next big game, what people are going to say, people were ready to dig his grave and then shovel a bunch of dirt on it if they lost on Saturday. And after a disastrous first half, there were people already with their shovels. Check Twitter, check social media. People were dunking on Steve Sarakesian. The first half was terrible. What in all his fault? He can't catch the ball. He can't throw the ball. But we know how this works. The head coach gets the blame when things don't go right. Well, everything Steve Sarakesian did in the second half went right. He had the Midas touch in the final 30 minutes. He went out and took that game. They calling the fourth down decisions, the stones he had on some of those calls, including one in the third quarter deep in Texas territory, the clock management late, right? Scoring with only 25 seconds left, not giving Ohio State enough time to march down the field and potentially kick a game winning field. Everything he did was money in the second half.

Huge for him. A lot of doubters were silenced by Steve Sarakesian's performance in that win over the weekend. We now know he can win a big game against one of the elite programs in college football. So I mentioned three that were answered. Two that are close. The two that are close number one have the long horns fixed their penalty problem. The reasons these two questions are in this separate category is nothing to do with the 2026 season. I'm just so scarred, so ridden with UTSD, like two games into this year, not enough for me to say that these things have been corrected. Because these weren't just problems in 2025. These have been problems that have faced Texas for the last few seasons. So that's why I kind of need to see more than just two games. But in these first two games, Texas has six total penalties. They averaged eight and a half per game last year. They've got six in two games. Point of emphasis for Steve Sarakesian in the off season to this point that has clearly worked for penalties against Texas state in the opener, none on the starting offensive

line. They were the biggest culprits for the massive penalty problem that Texas had a season that go. None through two games for them. And again, just a total of six last year, Texas had six penalties against Ohio State alone, which was triple the amount that the buck eyes had. He lose the game by one score. Penalties can be the difference. They played a big role in the long morts coming up short in the shoe. So far two games in so good. And then number two, the question that I'd love to be able to say is that Texas has been the last four games in the last four games in the last four games in the last four games in the last four games in the last four games in the last four games. And then number two, the question that I'd love to be able to answer that I just can't yet, but golly, it's been really good so far. The red zone offense huge issue the last few years. Ohio State, Georgia, playoff games, you name an in big spots. Texas has not been able to punch the ball into the end zone from inside the 20 yard line. And then number two, the question that I'd love to be able to say is that the red zone offense

in the fourth quarter on three consecutive drives when Texas needed every single point. Massive against Texas state in the opener, seven trips into the red area, six scores, all touchdowns. The other the archmaning interception in the end zone, not great, but everything else has been money. 11 trips inside the 20 yard line for the young season, 10 scores, nine touchdowns. 82% touchdown rate. That is as elite as it gets. And again, it's not like you played to nobody's like a lot of other teams have or to Jones, junior highs to use the example Steve's arch Asian keeps bringing up. You just played the number one team in America, four for four in the red zone with three scores, three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Yeah, I want to say it's fixed need to see a little bit more, but what a great start in terms of penalties and red area offense for the long hordes in 2026. So there you go. That's what's been answered for me through these first two games of the season. Would love to hear from you. I'll do you agree? Do you disagree? What else would you add to that list?

Comment below with your thoughts. All right. Little more post mortem, if you will, from the long hordes big win over Ohio state. Let's talk more about the defense. What changed in the second half that allowed Texas to shut down the high powered buck guys offense? We'll dive in next unlocked on long haunts. I'm a first to shout out to our friends add fandall. All right, welcome back blocked on long horns your team every day. You know, as much as it was a tale of two halves for the longhorn offense on Saturday. It was every bit of that and then some for the Texas defense against Ohio State. A couple of minute football was not existent for the long horns for the first 30 minutes of the game. I give the following defensive numbers knowing that the defense isn't entirely to blame for these stats being as bad as they are Ohio states average starting field position in the first half was their own 46 yard line. So naturally the defense had some things stacked against them because of the struggles from the Texas offense and special teams in the first two quarters but saying that it's still safe to say it was not a fun first two quarters for Will Mushchamp's group either. And there were plenty of people in the stands around me at DKR TMS Saturday night asking at halftime if Steve Sarkiesian had maybe made a mistake bringing coach boom back as the defensive coordinator.

This was his first big game as as the new Texas DC and Pete Kowski's defenses had done a pretty good job against the buckais all things considered in the two previous matchups. It was an ugly first half for Texas on defense. How about these numbers for Ohio State's offense. They scored 20 points. Julian saying a 12 of 16 192 yards and a touchdown no turnovers Jeremiah Smith six catches 110 yards and a touchdown. The buckais rain the ball incredibly effectively between the tackles. Ohio State was on pace for 500 yards of total offense and 40 points. They had five first half possessions. They scored on four of them. Now granted one field goal was a gift that was after a league grounds fumble on the first play of the game. The only longhorn stop there. I mentioned it was four or five buckais drives that ended at points. The only stop came on a turnover on downs at the 12 yard line the Texas 12 yard line. So it was bad. Texas would not have had a prayer to come back in this football game if the defense didn't figure some things out at halftime.

To say they figured some things out would be an understatement. There wasn't like one specific thing that Texas did in the second half to turn it around. It was kind of a few different things and some of it was just better execution. I know every coach says that when their team plays bad. I was just execution. Some of that was really the case on Saturdays and I like will much champ reinvented the wheel at halftime. He called a lot of the same things. Texas just did a better job in the second half. But I did say there were a few things that actually did change. Couple of them worth bringing up personnel wise Texas stopped running three defensive and fronts and they stopped stunting inside it as much. They brought in bigger bodies more defensive tackles that slowed the run game between the tackles. Terrick Williams Jr played a lot less in the second half. Unfortunately for him that helped the passing game. He has not had a great start to this season. I'm still holding out hope. Bowmasco the Rutgers transfer. I thought he struggled a little bit against Texas state in the season opener. He was really good in the second half. He played press coverage against Jeremiah Smith on multiple occasions. Now they always gave him inside help.

So he wasn't totally on an island. But he played great in those spots despite a serious size disadvantage. He had going up against Smith. I mean four targets when mask was matched up against Jeremiah Smith. Zero catches crazy and when Ohio State tried to rediscover its offensive urgency down the stretch when they realized oh Texas is making this a game. Maybe we better go back to Jeremiah Smith. Bowmasco was ready for the challenge. He was fantastic. Texas didn't like totally dominate the game in the second half defensively. They just stopped allowing explosive plays and they started to get off the field like they started winning on third and fourth down. Julian saying one very good. He was five of 16 for 86 yards in the second half. He kind of switched roles with archmaning arch struggled in the first half. Then he took over. Saying was great in the first half and then he totally fell apart. He missed a wide open touchdown over the middle when the game was 20 to three that would have put things completely on ice.

Now the buck guys actually had some quality drives on the first couple of possessions in the second half. But the horns defense they bent they didn't break. They only allowed three points on those drives and then from then on they pitched a shut out. And I said there wasn't a ton of dominance. There was some dominance in there too. For guys that I want to give some love to for the way that they played. Look a bunch of other guys had moments, but I think these four were a step or two ahead of everybody else. I want to start with Grayson littleton. I love this guy man. Started as a true freshman on the road week one in Columbus. He was tested often in that game and he held up this time around. Obviously more proven more experienced. They tested him again. He more than held up the unheralded hero of the Texas defense. A terrific P.B.U. early in single coverage against Jeremiah Smith. That prevented a touchdown. Only 16 yards allowed in coverage for Grayson littleton. The highest graded defensive player by pro football focus too, which makes me feel better about what I saw. He was and is an absolute stud. I mentioned Bomasco earlier. Look Jeremiah Smith had his way at times against a few different guys in the longhorn secondary. He has his way with a lot of people around the country. He's that good. He didn't torch. He didn't even burn.

Bomasco. I mentioned four targets to Smith when Moscow was his primary cover zero catches zero yards. Masco a monster in the second half. Justin Crier. Juice Crier. Really good. He's a great player. I don't think Biles had that great of a game on Saturday. Now he did have to play all 65 snaps that the Texas defense played. It was hot. Maybe he was tired. Maybe that contributed to it a little bit. But Texas got a better game from juice Crier at the other linebacker spot and he played 63 snaps. He was needed his role incredibly important. We talked about it once to Anthony Smith got dismissed. How big he was going to have to be for this defense. He led the long horns with nine tackles. He was all over the field. He's not the most athletic player Texas has, but he plays hard. He knows where to be. And then Collins Simmons last but not least. Not the best box score. I'll ever have just one sack to TFL's two total tackles, but he made some huge plays. He had the pressure on the third down early in the fourth midway through the fourth quarter. Oh, how stage striving. It's a one score game.

He's a third down in four Simmons gets a pressure forces an air and throw from Julian saying it becomes an incomplete pass. The next play was the missed 45 yard field goal. Simmons doesn't get that pressure or how state converts the first down. Or probably talking about a Texas loss here. Collins Simmons also drew that hold on the final drive. He drew about five. Well, he was held about five or six different times. He didn't draw those penalties because the refs have to throw the flag for them to actually get called. But Simmons really good in big spots, especially in the second half. Those four guys deserve their flowers. Thank the Lord. They let us play two halves. Just like the offense, not a lot of good from the Texas defense and half number one. They up their game and half number two. None of Steve Sarkeesian or Archmaning Saroaks would have been a damn thing if the Texas defense didn't elevate. Would prefer more turnovers than just the one they had on the very last play of the game. There are things that need to be cleaned up. There are some personnel decisions that have to be adjusted based on what we saw kind of a learning experience for Will Mushap with this defense. His guys in their first big game.

Some things will change. I feel good about the Texas defense. But again, don't forget about them. They were really good in the second half when they absolutely needed to be. And they're a big part of why the long horns are now the number one team in college football. Alright, one segment to go on a Tuesday show some injury updates. One player left the game with an injury and then a few updates on some guys who did not play on Saturday against the buck guys that's coming your way next unlocked on long horns. Built for those who want better, the Dell XPS. Built for you. All right, final segment Tuesday morning show locked on long towards your team every day. Some injury updates coming out of Saturday's game and coming out of Steve Sarcussion's Game Week press conference. He might have been asked one or two questions about UTSA, but the vast majority of what Sarc talked about yesterday was about the win over Ohio State and rightfully so that was a huge one for Texas. But unfortunately, Texas did suffer an injury in that game and there are a few guys recovering from some injuries and we got some updates from the head coach and also just some other updates from what I've been told surrounding some of these long towards will start with Nick Townsend who left the game on Saturday in the third quarter did not return to the game. He was asked about him yesterday didn't give us a whole lot. He said, quote, I would say right now he's got a knee injury.

We're going to continue to evaluate him to see when we can get him back. How long that will be I don't know end quote. So look, Sarc, no injury reports. We're still not into SEC play. We're not going to have won this week ahead of the UTSA game. I would be very surprised if we saw Nick Townsend suit up against the roadrunners this weekend bigger fish to fry. You've got three other tight ends that you feel really really good about been told it's a bone bruise for Nick Townsend so similar to what Trevor Gooseby had two to three week timeline perhaps. Hopefully that's what it is and it's nothing more. But again, you're just fine against UTSA. You've got other guys at that position. No need to rush Nick Townsend back Texas. I think we'll very much get him back. I think we'll very much air on the side of caution there. Justice Terry did not play against Ohio State the former five star defensive lineman in his second season. That was a bit surprising to me. Considering the camp that he had and how he looked in game one against Texas state. I was there sitting on the Texas sideline on the sideline, but on that side of the field in the stands and Justice Terry was there. He was in uniform. But he did not play. I'm thinking, alright, I get it. He's a sophomore.

But I thought he was good enough toward the coaches would trust him in this game. What's the deal? Well, Steve Sarkiesian told us yesterday that he is also banged up. Quote, Justice kind of hurt his foot in pregame warmups just didn't feel like he could push off the way that he is capable of. And that hurt because we had a plan for him in this game. We were counting on him and football sometimes that happens and you just deal with it. Hopefully we get him back sooner rather than later because he is performing at a high level. We definitely need to get him back going. So Sark basically told you, Justice Terry was going to be a big part of the defensive line game plan. Heard himself in pregame warmups. I was told turfto did not play at all. Same thing. You don't need him against UTSA. You'd like to have him week one in SEC play against Tennessee one week from Saturday. That's a bummer though that opportunity for him to really showcase his skills and introduce himself to the rest of the country. I'm sure he didn't get that chance. Derek Cooper, another guy who did not play against Ohio State. No surprise. Got hurt in the first half in the season opener.

Left the game against Texas State in a walking boot. He did return to practice midway through last week. There were some reports about this being a game time decision. I told you all later in the week that I didn't think Derek Cooper was going to play. He didn't even if he was 100%. I feel like that was a game the long horns were going to rely more on Hollywood smothers and relief brown because of their experience. But yeah, no Derek Cooper. Perhaps some good news. His family came in town for the game. Maybe they would have come in down even if like Derek Cooper was seriously seriously injured. But I think that's a positive. And I will say this again UTSA this weekend. I love Derek Cooper to play just to get some actual reps and some confidence going into conference play. Like yeah, you can beat UTSA without him. But you want to see what you got from your freshman tail back before the going gets really, really tough. So we'll find out as the week goes on. We'll hear from Sark again on Thursday. We'll report throughout the week here unlocked on long horns. I hope being Derek Cooper can give Texas something this weekend. I want to see what he's got. I'd also like to give Hollywood and relief brown a little bit of a breather as well because they've got a big load coming their way after Saturday.

Lauren, see more a couple more quick updates here. Still don't think he's 100% but Dylan's a course. He was so good against the buck. I'm not sure it's going to matter when Lauren, see more is 100% what a moment for Dylan's a course. He was fantastic. Look, depth matters. Maybe Dylan's a course. He has a bad game. Lauren, see more experience. He can come in and help. Obviously if somebody gets hurt, Lauren, see more can come in and help 60er player. He's still going to be important for this Texas football team this year. But I just don't think he's 100% right now battling that lower body injury that he suffered in fall camp. Two more quick ones. David or Phil Sime has not played yet. He did practice some last week. That's a former five star versatile piece on the Texas defense. You could play a couple of different spots. He's going to help the secondary when he's fully ready to go. Another guy monitoring this week. Again, you want to get him some run before conference play, but maybe you keep him bubble wrapped for one more week and make sure he's good to go for that game in Knoxville one week from Saturday.

And then Trevor Gooseby is so back. I just I wanted to talk about Trevor Gooseby for a second and the bone bruises fine. He was the highest graded offensive player for Texas in the winover Ohio State. He looked every bit. The all American that he is. He looked every bit the top 10 NFL draft pick that he is going to be in April. He's a stud. He's awesome. Sark raved about him for like two minutes yesterday. Rightfully so I could spend 30 minutes talking about how damn good Trevor Gooseby is awesome, awesome player. And obviously it's awesome that he's basically 100% good to go. He's playing like his 110% right now. What a performance by him. He's scary to think that he might not have been fully healthy and he still did that against that team. Dude's ridiculous. All right, so there you go. Some injury updates more good than bad, but obviously some unfortunate happenings coming out of the big win over the buck guys, but that'll do it for this one. If you made it this far, number one, God bless you. Number two, please remember to like subscribe, share, leave a comment, rate five stars, all of those great things.
