3:06the 12 noon segment he was on. And let me just kind of cut to the chase. He believes that the injury at this point to the elbow given that it's happened at least twice and maybe it happened in Minnesota as well. When it was reported that he re-injured the elbow, they didn't say it was dislocated. He thinks that a, the team handled it the right way back last November after the Seattle game because the recurrence rate is very low and the operation rate is very, very rare as well. You typically just put it back into the socket, you let it heal and it usually doesn't happen again. But he said now that we've had at least two instances of an elbow dislocation, he believes what they're discussing right now are surgical options and that more likely than not,

4:07that's the way the team and Jaden's team will go because now he's more susceptible to it since it's happened at least two times that we know of. Maybe three if you count them in a soda game. And yes, he could wear a brace and limit the opportunity to do it again. But if he did it again, the surgery becomes, there's more risk if it happens again with the outcome of a surgery, which now the prognosis would be very good. So he thinks there's going to be a surgery and he's essentially going to miss the rest of the season. That's one doctor, one orthopedic surgeon and he was very good as a guest. I would urge you guys to listen to it. I was hoping that he was gonna say, ah, he just threw a bandaid on the thing and put him back out there. He's gonna be fine. Didn't you hear what Kurt Warner said? But I didn't get that. I was hoping that he was gonna say,

5:08I didn't get that from him. So he thinks that that's the news that is going to be coming tomorrow or Thursday or sometime before the end of the week. That was his guess. And I said, is it possible? They'll just put a brace on it and they'll wait. He said, yes, they could do that. But at this point now, there is more risk in doing it that way. So how are you? Man, for the first home game to have that news break before the first home game, oh my gosh. He, he, he, unbelievable. I mean, he's so crushing. Are you, I can't tell you how upset I was how upset I was to describe my level of just heartbrokenness in the moment when I saw that elbow. I, I, you know, I could tell,

6:10I could tell by your tweet that came later when you were pissed off about the touchdown replay. What did I, what did I, why would you? I don't remember, but just because you generally, you're generally pretty disciplined on your social media during a game, you know, you give your, you have your prediction, you give your half time assessment, and then you give your little assessment at the end of the game. There's usually not much wavering in between, but you were so pissed off that they blew that touchdown replay call. Oh, God. I think that was that, that was part of the pain carried over from, from Jaden. Well, you know, it's interesting about that, and I was talking to somebody else about this. Oh, I was talking to CJ about this. You know, CJ was in Dallas as part of the broadcast team. You know, he produces, and I said, you know, when that happened, I, I borderline kind of felt like the game was over,

7:13the season was over. When I saw that elbow, it was sickening. And you know, what made it even worse, or better, I guess, is that he was literally Jaden Daniels at his best for the first 29 minutes and 57 seconds, you know, until the final play of the first half. And you, you saw and you were reminded just how great he is, just how elite level talent wise he is. And I'm like, are you effing kidding me? A game and a half into this season. And so I almost checked out a little bit, and I felt checked out, and I think that play brought me back to life because I'm like, are we having an impact? Oh, it was a, it's certainly had an impact. Did you see Mike Pereira came out and said, what were they looking at like every, it looks like they blew that call. They completely blew it. I'm, I communicated with somebody this morning

8:16to find out when the team will be, you know, informed of the mistake that was made. And you know, people will say, well, who cares, man, the game's over. I understand that, but who cares for them? But for us, it'll be a conversation. Why not? I want to know that the league, you know, wrote them a note or called them to say we, we totally blew the replay. That was a challenge that should have been, that should have led to an overturn and it should have been a touchdown. Look, the game would have been 17 to 17 in that moment. You don't know what would have happened from that point forward. And I also was pissed because I'm like, look, this Dallas defense and our defense are pretty bad defenses today. And maybe you could steal one because you're gonna need to steal a few until he gets back. But I think in the moment, I wasn't even thinking about him coming back. I was thinking, oh my God, the season's over, which I don't think it is now after taking a deep breath.

9:17And, but yes, that was disgusting. The Terry offensive pass interference penalty was ridiculous. I, the game was, the Hockley group, he's terrible. I mean, that group is truly brutal. You know, someone reminded me this morning when I was trying to find out when the team would find out about what the league says about that call that Hockley was the one that literally almost cost him the game in 2024 against New Orleans when they basically gave the Saints an extra play down there at the end of the game. Remember? Yeah. With, and I'm forgetting the specifics of it, but they were incensed with the way that ended. Yeah, you gotta get that right. But I'm not even sure the Hockley crews in charge of the replay. New York should have said, hey, this is an easy one, guys. That's a touchdown.

10:17It's an easy one. Yeah. Yep. Anyway, all right. So I want to hear what you thought of the game. I did just read your column because you told me to read your column. So I have an inkling of what you're going to say here, but share with everybody your thoughts after one of those games that we're going to remember for a while if he ends up missing the rest of the year. Yeah. You know, what I wrote was, and this was the honest feeling I had watching the game up to that point. He was brilliant up to that point. He was vintage, Jaden in so many ways, but he had to be. Okay, they were 10, nothing in the first 10 minutes. He had to be, for them to have a chance, he had to be that. Right.

11:18And I just, and my impression is he's going to have to be that more often than not with this roster, which I think is lacking in talent up and down lines. And if this is what it's going to take, rushing for 70 yards in the first half, for them to compete, it's too much to ask. That was my thing. Too much to ask. Too much to ask. I mean, he is that. He, what do you mean he has to be that? He is that in the first, in the first half. Josh Allen is that. Every elite quarterback has to carry his team to a certain degree. No, yeah, but some elite quarterbacks carry a team with an infrastructure of support around them. And it's not the only, it's not there only past the victory. It's been that for Josh Allen and Buffalo for a couple of years.

12:19He has James Cook. That's a better player than any skill player. The commanders have. It's been that at times for my homes. I mean, look, I, he has, he has Kelsey, a skill player that's better than any skill player the commanders have. You're not wrong in saying that, but when you say, you know, he had to be that, he is that. He is Superman. He's got to put on the capel when they need him to put on the cape. But they, they, but they need him to put on the cape, I think they'll need him every week to do it. I don't know if it would be every week. I don't think it would be. I don't know if it would be every week. Yeah. But my point is I felt watching it that there only chance to win was for him to do this. And I think that that raised the risk of him getting hurt. He was the way he slid was great. I mean, he was, he was very, you know, very careful

13:23in his runs. But it was just felt inevitable. Now, if you're asking this guy to drag this team up and down the field, it's not week after week. It's going to happen sooner or later. I guess that's why it's happened to Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson. And a lot, I mean, a lot of other great quarterbacks. No, Lamar Jackson came into an organization. I get, I get all that. I know what you're saying. And Joe Burrow has the two best wide receivers in football. I know. And also had the worst defense. What I'm saying, you're not wrong in that there's a heavy burden on a player like Jaden Daniels in an organization like the one they have with a roster they have. But that burden is pretty damn heavy on every elite quarterback. You know, it's true that Lamar Jackson had a better organization

14:24than Joe Burrow's got two great receivers. And Josh Allen, yes, has James Cook in the backfield and Patrick Mahomes has Travis Kelsey. But at the end of the day, those guys carry the same kind of burden to go into the phone booth, put on the cape, and come out and carry the team in a lot of games. A lot of games. I would, that's the part I would push back on. Like he had to be that, he is that. And he's going to have to be that. And so do a lot of quarterbacks in this league. They're get they get asked to do that. But yeah, in that game on Sunday, I don't disagree with you. Like although I did say that if the Deami Brown touchdown stood at 1717 and maybe they're in it, maybe they have a chance, not as much of a chance as they would have had with Jaden Daniels. Obviously, obviously, that games, that games 3835, 3734,

15:27if he's in it, and it's a great back and forth, you know, one mistake's going to decide the game kind of a game. But I was my thought. And then, you know, I don't blame, I don't necessarily blame anybody for it. You know, my position, I've written this a couple of times. I think that Adam Peters and Dan Quinn inherited a really devoid, a roster really devoid of talent. Similar to what Shanna Han had when he came here in 2010. Matthew took over for Vinnie, you know, and all that. And there's so many parts that need to be upgraded. You can't afford to make a mistake in your personnel decisions. And I'm not criticizing him. I'm not saying he's been a terrible general manager, but he's made some mistakes.

16:28And the mistakes stand out when there's so much to fill in. So by the way, so I did in reading your column, and we can talk about this now, you did not agree with the decision at the end of the first half to go for the touch. Why? No, I think I think we're, I think it's gotten out of control. This go for it. Mania, you know, it's just gotten out of control. Take the fucking point. Take the point. Who do I want to you to think, well, we're going to, we're going to score, you know, take the points, especially when you're getting the ball back. It's beginning the second half. I mean, you're not wrong about like teams just not really enjoying kicking field goals anymore, unless they're 65 yards in out. But I actually, in the moment, you know, when they got to first and goal the one, I'm like, you got to get a touch down here. Even if it comes down to one play, you have to get a touch down here.

17:31And I was totally okay with the decision. I'm leaned in that direction. But, and I've said this for the last two days, I also would have been okay had they kicked the field goal, because I think, you know, we don't have all the information in these things, right? Like it's, do they have a play that they really like in that situation? You know, they like all their plays, Kevin. They like the shuffle path. I understand that, Tommy. Do they really like the play they have in the situation with the context that they have in that moment? And context matters. You know, part of the context is what you said, you don't want to walk away with nothing, especially getting the ball to start the second half. You can take the lead on the first drive of the second half if you're down 17 to 13. So let's take the three. But the other part of it is, you have seen for the first 29 minutes and 57 seconds

18:32that you're probably not going to stop them very much. And this is going to be a game where the team that gets stopped and forced to kick field goals in the red zone more than the others, probably going to lose the game. And you have the context of that team's been on the field for 15 plays, three straight long drives. And we've got Jaden Daniels at quarterback. So I absolutely had no issue in leaned in the direction, but I don't have a problem with people saying that they preferred the field goal, but I think it was a very debatable decision. I don't think it was a slam dunk either way. And those that say that the call or the decision led to the injury, you people are stupid. Stupid. That was a fluke. That was a fluke. My point about Jaden making himself more vulnerable because he has the drag to team had nothing to do with that play. That was a fluke play. OK, the only risk they put him at was having

19:36on the necessary play. But the play itself, that didn't, I mean, no one can predict that he's going to trip and fall and dislocate his elbow on something like that. Now I have a question for you because you're more well-versed in this than I am. Why not put him in the shot, come for that? Everyone in the stadium knew he was going to throw the ball. Well, I don't think he was going to throw the ball. You knew on first and second down that they were probably going to throw the ball. I actually, and I've always felt this when Shanahan actually did this when he was the coach here and in Denver, is sometimes, and I've seen Andy redo it too, in that situation with no time outs, just a few plays left, teams just assume that on your first couple of plays, you're not going to run it until the final play of the half if you decide to go for it. So you're playing pass on first and second down. I actually think teams should spread the field

20:38and run it on second down because I think more times than not, it'll score. And yes, if you get stopped, you'll get second guess till the cows come home because you didn't get that third opportunity at another play. But that aside, Shotgun Under Center, as you said, they love their plays. And that was the play they had called. Now, I've gone around the bend on this one. And tomorrow, Steve Souter will be in to do a film breakdown. And he and I have already discussed this play. He thinks the play was going to be a trick play. He thinks Rashad White was going to throw a half-back option pass to whom I'm not sure. But Quinn said yesterday it was a sprint option. And with Rashad White as a pitch guy, the problem with that is they weren't blocking.

21:38They were not going down field as blockers. There was a concerted effort for every single offensive lineman to not be an ineligible down field, which is why Souter's convinced on top of the fact that Rashad White was backwards waiting for a lateral, which would have allowed him to pass. He wasn't on that line where you typically are as a pitch option on a play like that. Quinn should never have told us anything about the play, really. But maybe he was being deceptive saying, yeah, it was going to be an option pitch. Jaden keeps it or pitches it to Rashad. Souter's convinced because of the pass blocking and because of the angle Rashad White took, that Rashad White was going to throw a half back option. And look, when you consider this guy, Blau in two games is already called three trick plays. I know. You know, it's a possibility.

22:39I've looked at that place so many times. It is a possibility. It's a possibility except nobody looked like a pass receiver. And he said, well, maybe Jaden was going to be the pass receiver after he lateraled it. And I'm like, oh my god. Well, maybe who knows. But in terms of why not shotgun? I don't know. I mean, this was the play they liked. I mean, I typically, by the way, on an option, you'll see the quarterback in pistol or in shotgun. But maybe that was, maybe that's another indication that it really wasn't going to be an option play, that it was going to be a trick play. Yeah. What it was was a nightmare. It was a nightmare as it turned out. You know, I was thinking, I mean, for those of you, I know I'd like to think that much of the audience listening to this podcast. And maybe this is a bit gratuitous.

23:39Maybe it's a bit self-promotional for both me and Tom. But I'd like to think that most of you, like the large majority of you, or let me just say, every single one of you that are listening to this podcast, that nobody actually believes that the call or the decision to go for it is the reason Jaden Daniels got hurt. Like I just said, you got to be stupid to think that. I don't mean to be that harsh, because a lot of you guys called me stupid on the internet yesterday. After you... Oh, oh, oh, oh. Did you see that? Did you see that? Oh, I saw it. I said, wow, he's walking in my neighborhood now. Well, it was so ridiculous. I've got a couple of emails and tweets to read on that. I'll get to that in a moment. But I mean, there are people I know, because I've heard from some of those people on social media

24:40that legitimately believe the decision to go for the touchdown is why Quinn should be fired, because he's the one that caused Jaden Daniels to get hurt. And I have to say that it's the same people that if they had missed the field goal, or if they didn't score to take the lead on the first drive of the second half, would have been saying, how did they not go for it at the end of the first half? It would have been the same exact group. But oh, yeah. So yesterday, as I was doing the radio show, and I was, everybody was emotional yesterday, and I just can't believe that this guy is hurt again. I mean, I know that some of you were convinced that it would happen. I just didn't think it would happen the way it happened. That's by the way the other part of this, right? The one issue that people like me who loved Jaden Daniels and wanted him to be our quarterback before the 2024 draft, the frame was like, yeah,

25:43I could see that frame being an issue if he takes too many hits at the NFL level. But he stayed up right in college, played 52 or 54 games, rookie year, played an all 20 of their football games, which included three playoff games. And what's ironic, Tommy, is what people thought might happen, or even after last year, the narrative of his injury prone and he's gonna be injury prone, it wasn't about having your foot stepped on and then dislocating your elbow on a non-contact injury. The thought was this guy's gonna get hit too much, he's gonna take on too many hits and he's just not gonna be able to hold up physically. That hasn't happened yet. The two injuries of note are injuries in which his elbow dislocated in a very freakish, flukish way. Now, this Seattle game is unforgivable

26:44that they ran that play down 38 to seven or whatever it was in the fourth quarter. No one's ever confirmed this with me because I've gotten after them for sure. I think that's one of the truly more irresponsible play calls in a while. I don't care if he's in the game, but if he's in the game, he's handing off or throwing quick bubble screens. You don't run an RPO on a condensed field at the five yard line. That just made no sense. You put him at risk. It wasn't a read option play. I understand that. It was a RPO run or pass, but because it was such a condensed field and the pressure was so immediate, that had to be in your mind as a possibility. I blame them for the first one, but still it was flukish. He's not losing games because he's taking a battering to his frame. Now that may be what comes next.

27:46But anyway, so yeah, so. Yeah, let me make something clear. Because I got some pushback on my column. My criticism was not of changing. I mean, I think everyone knows why I think of Jaden. And just because he got hurt, I haven't changed my mind as to how great he is. And his ability, I'm not saying he shouldn't use his ability to run. That's not what I'm saying. And his ability to be mobile is part of what is greatness. I know, like you said, it's superpower. But I just, you know, my position was, this is the way they're going to have to win most of their games. And it's too much to ask. But my criticism was not of Jaden. No, I got that from reading it. Yeah. Yeah, of course. And your criticism wasn't of Quinn either for going for it.

28:47You didn't agree with the call, but that's not what you were criticizing. Yeah, no, you're the gist of it is what you said that if he's going to be asked to be Superman every week with a roster that's limited, then this is what you're going to expect. And I would just push back and say, I think they're going to be even with a decent roster. They're going to be many games where for them to win, he's going to have to be that guy. You know, he's, you said he had to be that. I think there are going to be a lot of games because Josh Allen has to be that. Patrick Mahomes has to be that. Lamar has to be that. Burrow has to be that. The great ones have to be that, even if they have a supporting cast on a lot of occasions. But anyway, so yesterday on radio in the midst of, I don't know what made me think of this. But as I was talking about, you know, the elbow injury and him being gone, perhaps for a long time,

29:51maybe the rest of the year, I just thought about that stupid flag football game that it was played in Saudi Arabia. Let me read a couple of the quick emails real quickly. This from Joe Z. Kevin, I'm disappointed in you. My guy every day from 10 to 1 and then another hour on your podcast. Hey, Joe, thank you for listening so much. But if you really think that a flag football game in March led to Jaden Daniels being injured in Dallas in September, you've gone to the dark side of hot take radio. I won't listen if this is where you're headed. Sorry, but it's how I feel. I hope you'll take it back from how how wrote. Please tell me you didn't blame the flag football game in Saudi Arabia, LOL for his injury in Dallas. And then this from Wu me.

30:54How is playing in a flag football game more than five months ago? How does that affect you in a game today? I can I can understand if it was a hamstring. But the only reason any of this happened is because he got stepped on. Yes. Yes. This is one of those things, Tommy, where the radio station puts out, you know, the YouTube video cuts and then labels it in a way that makes it sound like I said, the flag football game in March caused his injury in Dallas. I'm not the most brilliant, but trust me, I did not say that people. I never said that. I said, can you imagine if that stupid flag football game, which we criticized, you know, which we talked about, we're like, and by the way, the team was holding their collective breath. They didn't want him to play in it, but he got a lot of money to do it. And you can't begrudge these guys for trying to make as much money as they can.

31:55By the way, especially with a guy that might be injury prone for the rest of his career, but we talked about how the optics of it was not good coming off the season. And then in that game, he was running around juking people, playing receiver for part of it. And I just, it occurred to me as I was already on like, can you imagine in that stupid flag football game that he played in if he had gotten injured in that flag football game because it was a possibility that he could have been. And we talked about it. Can you imagine if he put it at playing receiver juking people, if he had put the left hand down to try to keep his balance? And he had dislocated his elbow in that game. Can you imagine if that had happened? That's what I said. I didn't say that the flag football game caused the injury in Dallas.

32:56But yes, I got a lot of heat for that because I guess it was labor. I think the video was labeled the flag football game. She upset it with the flag football game because it caused, you know, it led to the injury in Dallas or something. No, I never, I never actually said that. Of course, I wouldn't say that. That's absurd. But anyway, I think what are your kids think? You talked about your one son told you that he sent it. He sent me. He sent me. He goes, Dad, you're making some, you're making some new friends today on Twitter. And I said, what are you talking about? He sent me the funny thing is the first one he sent me. I'm like, well, everybody seems to agree with me because that was the first one I read. So we'll read this one. And then there are people that clearly saw, I guess, two different slugs to the video, I guess one of them sort of led people to believe that I said he got hurt because he played the flag football game.

33:58But let me just tell you for those that wonder about this, I know for a fact that there weren't a lot of people in the building in Ashburn that were very happy after the season he had last year that he was going to go play in this flag football game. And then when they saw it, they were even more angst-ridden because he wasn't just throwing the football as a quarterback. He was running around and played a little receiver in the game as well. Now they said the right things publicly, although Adam Peters did admit that they were, they kind of were on pins and needles holding their collective breath, making, you know, hoping that he would get through it without any injury. But they couldn't keep them from doing it because they got paid a boatload of money. I have no idea how much, but obviously it was a lot because that thing was supposed to be in the UAE, right, to begin with or something like that. And then the Iran... Yeah, it's not up in LA.

34:58Because of the Iran situation, yeah. But no, I did not trust me people. I've lost my mind on occasion, but I did not say that the flag football game in March caused the injury on Sunday. I just said it was stupid going in, and can you imagine if he had gotten hurt in that game? All right, well, what else? I've got something else from the game on Sunday that I haven't mentioned this week so far. But do you have anything else on Sunday or Jaden? Not particularly, no. So, you know, it's two games in, and still two games does not make a season by any stretch of the imagination. But did you guys know that the offensive lines pass block win rate according to the ESPN

36:00win rate stats that they are eighth in the league right now in pass block win rate? I actually like this, and I refer to these stats, these pass block win rates. They also have run block win rates. They have, you know, rush win rates, pass rush win rates, and run stopping win rates as well. And their pass block win rate with this Doomsday offensive line currently through two games is eighth in the league. Now, I think they've done a pretty decent job. I really do as a pass blocking unit before I saw that stat. I said last week, I thought they did a good job in pass pro, and I thought they did a decent job in pass pro on Sunday as well. Now their run block win rate is 28th in the league. I do think that their run blocking hasn't been great. I think the backs have gotten what they've been able to get.

37:02And I think Jaden was a big part of the success that Rashad White and Bill had on Sunday running the football because he was a potential runner on a lot of those plays. A lot of zone read looks several of them, you know, few of them anyway in the first half. I saw that just a little while ago, and I think that again, two games, I'm not saying that the offensive line, I told you the end of the summer, I'm not going to sit here if they have a great day week one, a great day in the first two games that you guys were totally wrong about it. But the offensive line through two games, they've done a decent job as a pass blocking offensive line. And the advanced numbers suggest the same thing. But anyway, all right, what else? Anything on the game? Yes, it helped. I mean, I feel like we still have so much to talk about.

55:05and Kirk cousins is still an effective quarterback I'd say why if Kirk cousins was here right now as you're back up I'd say you still got a season oh yeah a hundred percent so a hundred percent yeah I I don't think the season is over but that is contingent upon you know what the doctor on the radio show didn't say which is they don't do surgery and they throw up a brace on that thing after it's healed over a few weeks in these back I mean Kirk Warner put a brace on and played the next week so part of me really does just say come on man put the brace on let's go I mean when the seasons over go get the surgery but you know it's not your throwing arm you can hand off with your left hand with with your right hand it kind of be

56:10hard when the running backs to his right but with a brace hopefully you can still hand it off you can't stiff arm anybody probably with the brace but um I don't know man could this be could moving forward and and how to proceed on this could it be a source of contention between team Daniels and the football team oh I thought about that I can't believe I haven't brought that up I'm so glad you did I was thinking about that with the doctor when he was saying this is going to be surgery because I was thinking what if one side says they don't want it and the other side says you need it I also thought about I also thought about this I thought about from Jaden standpoint now okay you know let me let me let me just get to to this real quickly Jaden Daniels is going to get a contract extension I don't care if he's out the rest of the season

57:13I promise you he is going to get a contract extension in early 2027 I know some of you are like well you can't give him a contract extension now uh you again and by the way you better you're going to pick in the top three or four you better take a quarterback in April of 2027 I'm going to tell you right now I'd be shocked if he doesn't get a contract extension now that's contingent on him being out the rest of the year with the elbow him having surgery it being repaired and then thinking all will be well if he actually comes back and plays poorly or gets injured again over and over again and plays in six games check back with me now I'm going to tell you this he's going to eventually get a contract extension whether it's this upcoming off season or the off season that follows the you know worst case they pick up the fifth year option next May um and he'd be here for two more seasons but Jaden Daniels the talent that he has people this is very rare the

58:19league knows it they'd be in line to pay him if he ever became available which you Adam Peters is not ever going to let him become available unless he gets injured seven times this year and six times next year and it's clear that he can't have an NFL career because he's you know just can't stay on the field but um I mean Joe borrows missed half of his career so far yeah he got paid but I wanted um yeah what what was that in answer to you would say something at one point I wonder if this could be a source of contention right as to how to deal with the elbow between team Daniels and football team well how do you think it would break down team Daniels doesn't want it to team does or it couldn't be the other way right now unless Jaden's inner circle says

59:24we don't want you to go out there and play with a brace because what if you don't play as well what if you get hurt again now we're impacting the five hundred half billion dollar deal that you're in line for in January February March of 2027 rather get the surgery so we can just say we fix this problem which has been really the only serious injury right the only that's the only injury that's kept him out for a lot of games I know that you know he had the knee in green bay and missed a couple of games that's true um and he had the ribs which didn't cost him any games in 2020 2020 for excuse me but from Jaden standpoint you could say this is the issue that's costing me the most games a surgery takes care of it makes it a non-issue moving forward maybe they'll come to that conclusion even though you know the kid wants to play football yeah

1:00:26yeah back to um the idea that the season is over or if you agree with me it isn't over the other thing that it's contingent on for me Tommy and this is going to be a stretch for me after what I witnessed on Sunday but the defense has to be improved you cannot you know kind of hang in there oh okay I know you got to what what do you mean by that the defense and the defense has to improve up for what we've seen so far or what we saw last year the no the defense has to be good enough to keep you in games with Marcus Mario to quarterback it's got to give you a chance last year it gave him no chance for the most part and so what do you think that's going to happen well I don't know because I think in two games we saw a game in which there was promise and then a game against a much better offensive football team that's veteran where they looked

1:01:27like last year and by the way it was worse than what I even thought after watching some of the all 22 and I'll wait for suitor tomorrow Steve will be on tomorrow but man the miscommunications in some of the zone coverages it's you can see that they are still trying to figure out Dorontae Jones's scheme by the way that that makes sense right it's a brand new coach 12 new 11 12 new players like it should take some time so I guess what makes me believe that is that I I'm hoping it I'm wish casting it because you can't what we saw Sunday is not sustainable you have no chance like even if jaden were healthy like that's the best case is 8 9 9 and 8 with a defense it's going to play that way during the course of a season like but with Marcus Mario to quarterback you need you need to to help him I mean they gave no help last year I looked I looked something up that was

1:03:35second highest qbr game of his very brief career and as I've said they made him look like Joe Montana in that game but defensively I mean some of these performances are just absurd like they held they held green bay to 121 yards they got six takeaways against Detroit in a late season win when Detroit still had faint playoff hopes they beat Dallas last year forced Dallas to go two for 12 on third downs and then hearing they they took a team that scored 59 points in week one and held it to three in week two the weather was a factor for sure but man Brian floris's defenses are something else and I bring it up because Durante Jones is a disciple of Brian floris and the truth is

1:04:37Minnesota's personnel defensively is nowhere near the best in the NFL it's middle of the pack upper third maybe they don't have Philadelphia's personnel they don't have the Rams personnel defensively I mean they just brought back Harrison Smith who's like 50 years old at this point to play safety so where does the wish casting come from that Durante Jones the scheme the 12 new players that you know yes there they're appears to be a major flaw on the back end of corner in particular but maybe they get better and maybe they turn into a good defense it's early maybe they do I doubt it here's something else that I thought of and that is Dan Quinn's future being tied to something we talked about this before the season started and I've changed my mind on it and I will tell you

1:11:56and the performance at as the offensive coordinator because dan's not an offensive guy and if blow wasn't the right elevation even though the entire organization agreed with this um it's not going to be a good season if they're not good offensively and he's going to be gone you know more likely than not and i've now changed my mind on this i think that d'arante jones is the one that's going to save dan quince because can you imagine after what you saw sunday if they end up having another dreadful defensive season and defensive football team and he is a defensive head coach and when he took over last year tome when he took over the defense was better it didn't have players because any of the good players were hurt but the defense was definitely better coached

1:13:01after after joyt jr was demoted and he had an opportunity to say you know that thing that i learned when i was in a head coach about delegating more and you know uh being more of a cio kind of a coach and not you know handling one side of the ball he had a chance to change his mind on that and say i'm a defensive head coach i'm a defensive coordinator i've got to do that for to be right i've got to do that you know and he didn't do that and not only did he not do that he went out and got a coordinator that he runs a system that quince not really familiar with he hasn't run a system like the brine for a system if this defense because he picked arante jones he decided not to become the play caller and the game planner as a defensive head coach like mike mcdonald and others better that are that are in that role if they're terrible on defense again and then a top of that

1:14:03jaden doesn't play enough and there are three and fourteen team picking second or third in the draft he's gone now i'm not predicting that at all i i kind of have some some good vibes about d'arante i mean sunday was alarmingly awful and and it was but then again it's week two lot of new players new scheme and you were facing you know one of the best offensive teams you're going to face this year but to rante jones in this defense better be significantly improved it has to be for dan quince wow you know once you get past the front the front line of the defense i just don't think they have very good personnel uh i don't think their linebacking core is very very talented i think their defensive backfield uh well obviously i don't have to mention

1:15:06the defensive backfield that that that's destroyed them is in the first two games i just don't see this as a learning process i see this as a personnel problem but the personnel's all new i agree with you when it comes to corner right now like san re still appears to be a problem he's not a cover corner certainly not an outside cover corner but the truth is they're in zone like 80% plus of the time plus of the time here in the first two games which by the way a lot of teams play you know majority zone but i i can't weigh in on it yet because there are so many new players and by the way a player they were expecting a lot from on defense this year franky louvue you know they need him they need him uh he is he's different than chanel okay i think they believe that both

1:16:08in coverage as a blitzer as a runstopper but i mean chase on and settle and oh wait i think has looked good actually um styles obviously i think that's why you get past the front line i make robertson actually i think's been the most impressive defensive back although jeremy reaves is just such a big hitter and probably their best tackler and i think nick crosses look good although he got hurt the other day i i just i don't know how you would an internal injury i know that put him in the hospital yeah what do you think that was some sort of organ right yeah bruised organ of some sort um that's my guess i i don't love their personnel on the back end right now i don't i can't speak to whether or not i like their personnel in their front you know in their front seven i will say this kinlaw is good um he but he got banged up the other day uh and i think always pretty good

1:17:09but and i think louvue is really good i i we need i i could see this defense improving and becoming you know i'm not discounting the possibility that it ends up being a decent defense this year that's what i'm saying because it's it's too much of an unknown to say that for sure what we saw sunday is what it's going to be i'm not saying that you've said that but right i don't know i just think they've got personnel problems but back to what i said about when i do it if the defense sucks again and dronte jones was truly his pick i mean blow was the organization's pick basically they didn't want to they didn't want him to leave but if that defense is bad again and dronte jones has guys running around not communicating well and they end up with a losing record that's that's it what was this seven thirteenth pick seven thirteenth choice right who

1:37:39you know coaches to interview or have on shows players the same thing they'd love to see more coverage of their programs I don't want this to sound the wrong way but I guess there's no way for it not to sound the way it's going to sound for some of you but for a lot of us that are in sports media or in what I do kind of the long form daily shows I don't need to talk about Maryland I do because it matters to me but it doesn't move the needle for any of us now would that change if they were ranked in the top 10 and they were playing Ohio State or Michigan you know for a spot in the big 10 title game and maybe a playoff game sure you know if they were an upper tier team in the big 10 I think it would be a big deal but like every other team in town that isn't the football team there is basically a bandwagon element to everybody else and that includes you know the college

1:38:46teams of note now Maryland basketball a little bit different you know Maryland is a story in basketball but they can become a non-story pretty quickly during seasons like last year you know that is that can't continue and I think Buzz Williams is going to have a good season this year but Maryland basketball is I mean look Maryland is a basketball for school it always has been and it's a bigger deal and it always has been than football and when Maryland is really good in basketball there is a lot of media attention but it's different now it's just different than it once was like I said it's more of a pro sports town than it used to be and there's just a lot more competition for attention I personally would make it easier for media to cover the teams if I were out there not harder I mean the football stadium I mean let's be honest Saturday night is a once every few year scenario Virginia Tech sold out most times that stadium at best is half full
