Well, hey there, guys, greeting salutations and welcome to this newest installment of our lanterns post game show, talking about all the things that happened in the latest episode of the HBO series lanterns. I am your host, John Campy. Good to have you here joining me. Of course, as always, is Robert Meyer, Bernette, Robert, how you doing today, sir? You know, I'm doing rather well. I'm conflicted, John, conflicted about what we're watching. Oh my God. Well, we'll talk about that and a few things more as we get into it here, talking about lanterns episode five. Now, just so you guys are aware and just so you know, this will be fully open and spoilery in full discussion. So if you haven't seen episode five or, you know, if you're worried about that, just add this video to your favorites list and come back and watch it later. You have been warned.
All right. So Rob, last night's episode. I got to tell you one of the things I love about this show is how they are constantly dropping like I've never felt confused by the show, you know, the show is as you know, the YouTuber, Mr. Noah, all says it. The show plays face up, right? It shows you everything. It hides nothing from the audience. But then every once in a while, they'll drop in something that adds far more context and understanding to something. A great example of that is the opening of the one episode when we hear the ring coming into John's father's room saying, are you afraid and John's father saying, yes, it's like, well, now that explains a lot, right? I last night's episode did the same thing for me to open again back in 2007 with the
sheriff arriving in the town on the run from gangsters. Yeah. That whole scene again, it's nothing that has been hidden from the is it's not like it, it hid an important fact of something we didn't know. But when they reveal that, it's like, will this explains a lot about why the sheriff is there? What her commitment to the town is, why she said a number of things that she said, it just gives that little five minute scene, just pepper so much context of everything. And it gave it, well, number one, it also thoroughly eliminated any doubt that, yes, that woman was a manhunter, kind of eliminated and doubted with that. But also, it just kind of sets the context about not just the sheriff, but it let us understand the town. Like once that happened with the sheriff, then we understood the entire thing about the town as well. And I thought that opening was great.
And I'll tell you what else. So the woman playing the manhunter, she's from this Netflix show called Never Have I Ever. I think that's the name of it. And our friend, you know, our friend Spencer and Laura, Laura was the unit photographer on that show and she knows the woman who plays the manhunter too. And she said, she's great. She's wonderful. But the way she played the line so glib and so casually, like when she's talking to the gangster dude and she's like, okay, so you sell this to your boss. If not, I find you, I kill you and I kill your whole family. And I just the way she delivered it so casually, it's like, I had no doubt. Now, yeah, she was going to do that. I would have been more terrified of that than some huge mobs are going. If you don't do this, I'll find you and kill you and your family. The way she said it, far more terrifying to me. So any, I loved the opening. I totally did.
Although I will say this, you know how at the end of the one episode, I think it was episode one when it fast forwards to 2026. And John comes back into town and meets up with the sheriff again. And she says to him, you have an age at all. It's like, lady, you have not aged like a bit. She looked exactly the same in 2027. I'm sorry, little nose ring did not make her look 20 years younger, but like she looks exactly the same in 2027. She doesn't 2027. Anyway, that aside, you saw the opening of the episode. What did you think about it? Oh, well, that I really, I really loved the opening. And it really established the fact that clearly our manhunter has done something, something like that for everybody in the town, you know, and that's why the town is is loyal and it is what it is. And to the point where people learn, learn the manhunter's language. And I, you know, I thought it was, you know, because it worked like a great crime boss would work. Like here's somebody that you, they will earn your loyalty and there's nothing
you can do about it. You're in a situation where this person's going to get you out of it. The manhunter's going to get you out of it. But you have to have, you know where your loyalty's lie. You can't get out of it, you know, and I loved that because it explained so much. And you're, you're not like, oh, I get it. And you understand why the entire town is rallying behind this person. And I thought it was a great, it was a great bit of storytelling. I can't, let me throw this out there too. Something that I really, that I, it shook me a little bit. Once we understood the nature of the town, it changed our perception, at least for me. I'll just talk for myself here about not just the sheriff and how the town interacted with her, but the guy we saw as the main bad guy, the main rancher guy, I forget his name, the one who's supposed to be her husband, right?
Because you realize everything he said to how and John earlier in the show, about how she protects that, like this person, my benefactor protects this town. My benefactor has benefited this town. We owe our benefactor everything. You realize he wasn't just spouting platitudes like he, he actually meant it. And what that really did for me, and it made me question a lot about how I viewed that character as a whole, was and the end when she gets on the phone with him, it says, are you ready? It's like, he knows she's asking him to die for her. Like it's time. This is what you signed up for. And he was like no hesitation. And he's like, and he even says like, I like thank you for the extra time you gave me. Because remember he revealed earlier that he was dying. He was going to he had cancer.
He was going to die and she saved him. And obviously gave him the same deal that she gave the sheriff. Like at some point I'm going to ask you to protect me. And he was like no hesitation. Yeah, I am so grateful to you that what you did, you can, and I'm, I'm not going to be the traditional bad guy. Word now it's time for me to be selfish. And now I'm going to, I'm going to double cross our deal. No, he was totally willing to stand there and die and get his heart ripped out, which by the way, oh, even I got a little squeamish at that scene when he's like cutting his chest open and call me ma. Drives the hand and his chest had to find out. And he pulls the heart out. I was really kind of moved by the fact that I may have to reexamine the whole thought. Process I had of that character of him just being a giant dick, who was the stereotypical evil guy running the town is like. He was really just fulfilling it. That maybe he was a dick before, but I love that it kind of turned that on its ear for me that I had to reexamine how
even looked at that character. And, and the whole town and, and that sort of thing. So that's the part that really kind of hit me the most. If you look at the show looking at it from one big grand picture of the whole episode, what was the moment or scene or sequence for you that was kind of like the standout moment for you that you found yourself thinking about the next day about it. Well, the fact that they actually almost allowed John Stewart to burn to death. I mean, I couldn't believe that. And I think, right. You know, one of the reasons that I had a why I say I have a love hate relationship with the show, I look at started I was loving everything. But the thing that the thing that I was bumping on, I mean, obviously this show, first of all, the show was beautifully directed this episode. It was so well made. But I, you know, the fact that John Stewart, he could have died in that crash.
And to see the green lanterns at odds like this to the point where. Like I don't know if John would, I mean, I guess he would have killed you. She certainly came close to killing out with his bare hands. I just, I found it was just over the line for me to be honest. And I, but when, when the man hunter just stood there, but once you realize what she's able, because she says the beginning, let's, you know, let's get your pinky back. And you, you know that whatever's going to happen and you, you realize that that's what she does. She puts people in these compromising probably she probably it's always probably health related. But I mean, how much pain with John Stewart have been in? And that ultimately was caused by how Jordan, like he didn't even go in and check and I get it. They've, they've, they've, they've ginned up this whole thing to create this almost biblical rivalry between these two, these two men.
But I mean, one's already been a superhero for 40 years and one served his country and is a, and is a great soldier. And it, I mean, I, I don't know, man, I was, it really affected me. I was like really upset watching the episode. I thought the episode, you know, everything that happened kicked ass. But the John Stewart, how Jordan stuff really, I was upset by dude. These are my heroes, you know, and I was, but the way it unfolded, the way you know, they really had this apocalyptic feel and the sirens were going off in the town. And then Paul Ben Victor, that the alien with, when his, when, when, when they first walk into the diner and see the all the dead bodies and I mean, everything in there, it was, it was like all of these people were ready to put their lives on the line to protect the manhunter. And I got the feeling that all of them were living on borrowed time at some point or something had happened. Yeah. And the manhunter had had recruit, which I, I thought, what a great, you know, what a great way to instill like nobody would question the loyalty they have for her.
Or it, you know, it's only taken in human form, but it was, I mean, it was, this episode was hardcore, but I really, you know, it was a long time Green Lantern fan. I'm watching this. I'm like, are they going to kill each other with their bear? I don't like that. But it made sense to me because like they established what they have done with this whole show to me at any rate up until this point is they really established why they would want to off each other. Like, right. Yeah, yeah. The show's gone out of its way to kind of paint this picture that how Jordan represents everything that's been wrong with John Stuart's life. From the moment that his father was passed over to the fact that what that would that caused his life to be like after that point. And then of course that pivotal moment where he spent nine months living under a tree only to have it all thwarted by how he gets kicked out of the military with a dishonorable discharge which that ruined his life.
All of it is because of how Jordan, meanwhile, from how Jordan's point of view, this has been what he has been dedicated to for 30 or 40 years, however long it's been at that point. And then to find out that the Guardians have decided this guy's here to take your whole identity away from you. Yeah, with no pomp and circumstance with no, he doesn't get a gold Rolex. He's just going to be dismissed. It's not just taking away the ring. It's taking away everything that he is because he's given up everything because they had that one part that one bit of dialogue from him. It's about you just got to if you're going to have this job, you can't have anything else. You can't have any attachments. You can't have anything. So understanding from house point of view, he has literally sacrificed everything. To this role and he's made his mistakes for sure. But so now hat or John represents to him not just losing my precious.
It's about losing his whole identity, his whole life is that this guy's here to take that away from me. And then they set up, I think the show has set up beautifully. Why they continue to mistrust each other. Like I do like the fact that when Sinestro is basically painting a picture for how saying, you got to kill John Stewart. And it's like how puts the brakes on that? I am not killing him. All right. I am not killing John Stewart. Even though that solves all of his problems, he goes, I'm not evil. I'm not going to kill him. And then even in the car, he was like until right up that last moment, how realized John wasn't telling him the truth. When he tested him about if he figured out who the identity the manhunter was. And I love that part in the car last week when he says, you know, I really did forgive you. And I was really hoping you were telling me the truth, but I have to take you off the board now. And by the way, he wasn't driving 70 miles an hour into the car, right? Well, he had to survive himself too.
And so I like the fact that both house like I ain't going to kill him. And even when talking to the manhunter, he's like, listen, if there's anything I know, about Stewart, he's not a coward. So I like that they did that. I also like that John Stewart was smart enough to go like, yeah, the car a half hour later burst into flames. But like when he's talking on the phone, even John Stewart's like, like I don't think he intended for that to happen. Like I don't think he did. So I'm glad both of them at least have a perspective of each other. But at the same time, how's the one who fucked up his life? And John's the one who's there to take his life. And they are at these impassable odds with each other to the point that it came to blows. And both of them could have killed you. You know what I thought was interesting? During the fight, during the fight between John and Hal at one point, Hal got the ring back on and chose not to use it.
Did you notice that? That at one point, Hal got the ring back on and they're standing there facing off and Hal decided not to use the ring on John. My friend said, well, it's because the ring was depleted. It's like, no, no, no, no, that's not what the ring said. The ring said when he got to the apartment hotel, it's nearing depletion. He still had juice in that ring. He could have swatted Stewart five states over, but he decided not to do that. And I thought that was really fascinating. Well, you know, I don't think that Hal Jordan wanted to kill John Stewart. I mean, he's deeply conflicted, but I think there's a little bit of Jack Sparrow in Hal Jordan in that he's playing. I think that's accurate. You know, he's playing this part. So people are looking the other way. They don't like him and Hal Jordan's a bully and, you know, he's like, hey, Jr. He's pissing everybody else off because he's intentionally keeping everybody off their guard. You know, and he's drawing fire towards him. So he can kind of suss out what's really going on.
And I think that he's done a really good job of that. And the funny thing about him is how Jordan has been, his mind has been on the mission this whole time. You know, he's really, he's really, I mean, until he talked to Sinestro, but he's still going after this man hunter. And, and he still has to deal with the fact that the guardians have here, here, this might be the most important job he's ever had tracking this man hunter down. And the guardians have also put him in a position where he has to worry about what's going to happen to me for a moment to moment. I don't know. And so I thought that that's all very, very, very interesting. There is still, you know, you and I were talking about before we started the show. And first of all, I like we said about his been on mission. There's a bit of a Jack Sparrow to him. But really, at this point, up until this point in the show, he's never been wrong. Like his gut is always right and all that kind of stuff. But here's one of the things that really jumped out to me at the end of the episode was the end of the episode felt like the end of the season.
Like, oh, it's absolutely did. You know, it felt like the conclusion. John has the ring. And he's like, I see what the price tag now is that comes along with this ring. And I don't want it. Boom, drops on the table. And I was telling Rob before the show star. I'm like, I had to remind myself as the credits roll, there are still three more episodes. Yeah. Which brings up a couple of big things. One of the things John said to the guardian at the end was like, it made how break his oath. What did he break? We look, we still don't know that what was the big breaking of what was the big thing that broke the relationship between how and the guardians? What was it? What was the thing that happened that made how no longer want to see his avatar anymore? Because remember in episode one, the avatar was like, he hasn't activated me in X number of years.
Well, I just assumed he had something to do with Sinestro, like he letting him go or doing something for his mentor. I think it's something way more significant. Yeah, maybe there is like one big thing, whether about, you know, when he says to John, like, you know, it's better not to have connections, whether it was, they're going to replace in a Kyle Rainer storyline for him, or maybe he lost a wife, or there's something that made him lose it or whatever. So that's one of the big questions for me is what was the big breaking of his oath? And, and that thing that separated and fracture the relationship between how and the guardians. So that's the one thing. And then the other big question is, at least to me, that grandson is more than what he looks like. There is something going on with that kid. And I don't know if the kid is actually the man hunters offspring and not the sheriffs, but maybe it is the very fact that she says the main job of John Ritter's kid, the lawyer dude, sheriff's husband is to under all
the pressure to protect the kid. There's something there. There's something majorly significant. I totally agree with you. I don't know what it is yet. I don't even have any good theories yet. This episode is brought to you by TickTack. Lay something, get your game on because the TickTack lineup just got a new teammate. Dr. Pepper TickTack. This new double threat puts two of your favorite flavors into one box of mince. And when two iconic flavors come together, the result can only be iconic. Score big. Try Dr. Pepper TickTack today. I'm not the earth.
Digger. See the tree long. Only years until we're second rated are under 17 out of middle without parent. There's something major there. So we've got three episodes left here to navigate. I think a couple things are going to happen to navigate. Whether the beginning of the next episode will be like the beginning of this one, a flashback to 2007 or earlier. And we're going to see in a five minute scene what happened to hell. And that'll set the context. I think that needs to be played out. I think there's going to be some kind of a relationship reconnecting obviously with John and Hal. I think that's coming. I think we got to find out about the kid. I think there's more. I don't think the man hunter thing is done. Because I'll tell you one here's one of my big things. And if it wasn't for there still being three episodes left, I would say I had a problem with this. But because there's still three episodes left, I think this is going to get addressed. So Sinestro says to Hal. If there is still a man hunter out there, it's the second biggest threat you face.
Obviously, then talk about Johnster. Destroyers worlds these things. And you'll be taken out with one gunshot to the head. Like like just a human on a water tower with a sniper rifle. That like these destroyer of worlds, eliminators of entire civilizations, things entire quadrants of the galaxy fear. A human on a water tower with a sniper rifle can take it out. So I think there's something. I don't think we've seen the end of that. I still think there's more to it than that that we're going to find out about too. Anyway, sorry, Rob, I rambled there for a bit. No, no, no, no. Look, I also think we're going to find out more about the guardians. You know, how Jordan was the first is the first Green Lantern of our sector. And you know, there's probably this is the first time there's been a succession of the ring issue.
And I think all of this, the guardians have been watching all of this very closely to see where it all goes. Because in terms of the of Oa and their oversight of the galaxy, they, this interaction with humans, they're, Laura Linney is always going, huh, that's interesting. You know, she's always asking these questions and looking at them. And I think that there's a lot more going on with the guardians than what we know as well. Because they've never seen this before. So it's, I think it's all one big test for humanity itself, really. So what do you think as, as you look now at, you know, the end of the episode, this whole conflict, by the way, I thought that was really cool when you was about to blow himself up and, and how just created a tornado to flip him up into the sky for the explosion. I don't know. That was a nothing I have to say. I kind of was disappointed. I wanted to find out more about those aliens. And I think maybe there'll be more something will come into play.
I think you're right. I think there is going to be more shown. Yeah, there's going to be more of that because I love Paul Ben Victor as an actor. And I thought he was great in this role. But then also, how said Greenland and Stone kill? And that looked pretty definitive to me. Well, you know, he was blowing himself up. Right. How didn't blow him up? How just pushed him forward? I get it. He didn't prevent him from dying either. So I guess he could have done it. What could he have done? He had, he had the explosive. There's nothing how could have done at that point. For all we know, he was a living bomb. Like I, they never really kind of, yeah, they didn't explain it went into that terribly much. But I guess so for you though, now moving forward, what do you are some of the big now? Like I talked about how obviously I think we're going to get more about how's background, what fractured that relationship, what was the oath breaking, what broke him? I think there's going to be more about the kid. What are some of the things that you think moving forward or some of the bigger streets they need to go down still as we move into the last three episodes?
I want to see John Stuart tell his parents that he put the ring back. He said, no, my God. Nope. What's his mom going to do? Because it didn't just alter the way he got raised. For John's parents, that was their whole life now. Yep. Their whole life was about doing nothing but preparing John to take the ring. They're not going to be happy. It's like, it's like a parent telling their, you know, trying to prep their kid his whole life to be a doctor and he says, I want to be a songwriter. So I think you're right. I think that's going to be a major, amazing scene. I'm looking forward to that. Come to Mama Jesus moment. I'll tell you, it's going to be bad. But so then, are we thinking? Let me ask you this. On the surface, the manhunter is now eliminated.
The, I keep mispronouncing his name. Atrocious is off the board. If that was him. Yeah. If that was him. The one who kind of taking that, that character's representation at any rate. John's put the ring down. How was left lying in a bunch of rubble? There's no antagonist left. Other than the guardians themselves or that kid or the kid. But here's my question for you. Have we seen the last of Sinestro or does Sinestro come back to play? Oh no, he's got. He has to come up for it. What do you see happening? What do you see happening here? I and if I would imagine we're going to see a scene, it's probably going to be a flashback scene with Sinestro and how working together. A mirror of the relationship that John and Hal had. Working as, because Sinestro was his mentor.
And I think we have to see something like that before the end of the show, don't we? I don't know. Like, I mean, it is possible and conceivable and it works fine for the story. In your flashback sequence. Because we have to know why Sinestro and Jail know that. And, and, and, and do we know? I mean, I think that something that was going on between the two of them. Because that's when, whatever Hal did, that's when he lost favor with the guardians. You know, something went on there. Which is, which is weird because like, according to Hal and according to the guardians, Hal's the one who stopped Sinestro's rebellion against the guardians. Like, he's the one who stopped it. So like, how are they all of a sudden completely on the outs with each other? That's what I mean. I don't tell his own mentor. Yeah, we're going to see, we're going to, we got to see that because whatever happened there is is a reflection of what's been going on.
And I think it's going to, I think whatever that is, it's going to be the same thing we learned how the, because learning how the man hunters seduce the town was a big deal. You know, it really explained a lot. And I think that we need that with Hal and Sinestro. And because Sinestro, to say that John Stuart was more of a threat than a man hunter, there's, there's got to be more something ideological that was happening here. So I'm looking forward to it. Also, I did really like the, I thought it was hilarious when Hal said, you know, the whole joke about, well, did you sleep? Did you sleep with them? And it reminded me of the scene in aliens when, when, was it frost? It doesn't matter whether it's a Victorian baby. You know, and I just thought that was when Hal said that, well, you know, when you're traveling around the galaxy, that cracked me up. Yeah, I, yeah, that episode ended and I was just like, oh my God. So I am really looking forward to however they start the next, remember, we still have to get, we're, we still haven't had our guy gardener appearance yet.
Nope. We still haven't had Guy pop up yet. So it's going to be, I can only assume now that this is how the ring goes to Guy, that John abandoned the ring and now that's how Guy's going to get it. And that's the only way thing I can guess right now, but I'm sure we're going to find out. And I think we're going to find out in the next episode is where I think they're going to go with that. Okay. Okay. Guys, you've heard Robin I now going on about this for a bit. Let's now go over. I've had the Super Chats open. I forgot to announce that. But the Super Chats were open and you guys sent in a whole bunch. I've now turned them off because we had enough come in. But we're going to hop over now. It's just going to take me a second to load this up. That's not it. There it is. We're going to take a look now at what you guys have been sending in for us to take a look. And let's see what we have here. We are going to start off with, where's the first one? Okay. Our first one comes to us from Jared C. Who writes, did I miss something with the halogram?
What was the purpose of him showing up? Look like he didn't even need him or is that meant to pay off later? Well, Rob, I might be missing something, but I think the whole reason he pulled him up was to do a scan of the city and search for the manhunter, which he later accomplished and reported to how located her. This is where she is. Was there supposed to be more that I missed or was that? No, I don't. That's the way I took it. Just like you said. Yeah. Now again, I think one of the big things to come up is what was it that made guy want to turn off his own halogram? I think that's going to come up. But yeah, as far as the episode of the show, the purpose and summoning him was to do a city wide search for the manhunter and was mission accomplished. So I think in those terms, that's all he was trying to do. All right. Ryan Holman writes, one of two, these past two episodes were great. The slight progression of John and House dynamic, followed by its immediate spiral downward. But I also really like what John came to realize about what the ring was doing to both of them
and him choosing to walk away. Very Lord of the rings vibes. It makes sense of guys upcoming role. Maybe. That's, I would just brought that up. Maybe this makes sense of guys upcoming role. I think it probably does. But yeah, it was also very heartbreaking, Rob, because you saw them making progress in the relationship that, you know, I think how started to actually respect John, I think John started to actually respect how a little bit, even with all their existing animosities. And then something happens and it breaks it. And I thought that was really heartbreaking because I think this a part of all of us, including me, that wants to see how Jordan and John Stewart both with rings side by side fighting off some big baddie together. And I don't know if this show is going to give us that. I don't know if we're going to get that. Do you think that's something that's... Iron Man 2 back to back when Rodeon... Yeah, exactly.
That's exactly what I think a lot of us are hoping to see. But... I think we might see it. We'll see if another ring can come into play here. All right. Robert Presser writes, I'm curious how guys going to fit in the show. I'm guessing he probably knows who shot Hal. Unless he did it, I'm probably 1,000% wrong, but you never know. Here's my guest, Rob. I could be wrong. I don't really think Guy fits into the show. I think Guy is going to be an appearance. I think he's going to be there to serve a story function just of the episode in an expository purpose to sit there and have a conversation with John Stewart. Now, I don't know. Maybe he actually plays a pivotal role in a couple of episodes. My guest is, he's really just an appearance in order to give some exposition and some background, like any other character that would come into an episode and then walk out.
I think that's possibly the extent of it. Or it could be more than that. I don't know. How do you see Guy's role playing out in the next few things? I think it's probably going to be more cameo-ish. Like, a very, an appearance for like 10, 15 minutes in an episode, then probably got, or do you think he's going to play a larger role in this? I think he's going to play some kind. Look, his personality is so different from Hal and John's that I think that maybe the guardians themselves do a pivot. You still have to have no fear. But maybe they decide to look after or look out for a different kind of a human that isn't a test pilot that doesn't have a military background. I don't know. But something that makes them realize that the two men that they picked are maybe not the best. And then it's ironic because we think Guy Gardner is a douche, but the guardians are like, no, he's what we need here right now. So it'll be interesting to see how that all works.
And by the way, the two concepts aren't mutually exclusive. Guy Gardner can be a douche and be completely fearless. Like he, so like he can be both. And you know, that's what, you know, I loved him in Superman too, because at the end of the day, he's like, he's going to ultimately do what's right. He's ultimately a hero. But yet he is still a douche. And by the way, going back to the question here about, maybe he's the one who shot Hal. Obviously, I don't think he's the one who shot Hal. I am still on the train Rob personally. And I could be a thousand percent wrong. I know that I still don't think how's dead. Yeah, I don't either. I still don't think that was Hal that we saw in the state frozen stands. I still don't think I mean, a very well might be, but I still don't think it is. All right, let's keep going here. Next up, we've got again, Ryan, who writes in, also curious to see how John not taking the ring will affect his parents. Rob was saying the exact same thing. And their view of him and if they're love for him over the years has become twisted
and contingent upon his success. Here's the thing. Again, I go back and I reference Mr. Noid all again on YouTube. But I really do think he has, I think Mr. Noid all really does have the best analysis of lanterns. I've seen online. But you know, there was one breakdown of an episode that he was doing, Rob, where he kind of broke out the idea that the are not mutually exclusive things. That number one, John's parents were wrong. And number two, it worked. Right? Like that the whole thing, this all came about out of the episode where it showed how they very abusively raised him. Right. And he was like, I remember him kind of pointing out and I'm paraphrasing heavily here. But it's like, no, it is, they can both be true that they love their son and they wanted what was best for their son and they were totally wrong in how they decided to approach it and what they did.
It's not one or the other. It can be both. And I am so, I like Bob went off from me, Rob, when you brought it up earlier. I really wanted to see John telling his parents what he did because to his mom and his dad, who I believe do love him. I think like many parents do kind of live vicariously through their children. And like the dad who never made it as a quarterback in college wants his son to go pro because that validates him. Like I think there's going to be that moment where maybe they look at him. It's like you ruined our lives by not taking that. You just rendered our lives pointless or something. I don't know. Maybe they do that. Maybe they don't. Maybe they hug him and say, oh, we really want for you to be happy, John. Here's your crayons. I mean, I don't know. But I think that's a, that's a possibility here. Okay. Let's move on to the next one here. After I'm, we had Isaac, who writes, I know maybe early, but I think this show is on pace
to be better than Penguin. Kyle Chandler has killed it as this version of how. And you know, Rob and I were also talking about this before the show start. You said that not 45 minutes ago. Yeah. I, I am not ready myself to say that this show is as good or better than Penguin yet. Because we are just over the halfway mark. There's still three episodes to go. And a lot of things can happen in three episodes. Good or bad. I will say this. I, for me personally, I'm only talking for myself as a fan. It is on pace that if the shows last three episodes finishes strong as the first five. I as an individual fan. I'm going to be really faced with a hard dilemma, which one I like more. And now that, again, that's a big ifra because again, three full, we have three hours still
of this show to come. And it can go, it can drop off very quickly. It could sustain. It could descend. I mean, I don't know. So I'm not ready to call that. But I will say it is on pace to create a really big conundrum for me at the end as to which one I like better because right now they're very different too. Oh my god. Yes. There's such different shows. But again, both HBO, both all that kind of kind of and both unexpected. Both unexpected to me. But yeah, so we'll see. We'll see. We still got three episodes to go though, Isaac. So let's not let's not jump the gun too much. All right. Next up, seconds from disaster rights. Lanterns is hands down. The best thing the new DCU has put out. I hope we get more of this unless of whatever super girl was. I can't wait for episodes six, seven and eight. I, you know, Rob, I'm still in the same mind on that as I am with.
Is it better than Penguin? I'm not ready to say to me that this is better than Superman. Like again, we still have almost half the show to go. And I think that I love Superman. Yeah, this, but this is much more focused than Superman. You know, in terms of the story that it's telling it's a very different kind of story. And it, you know, Superman was kind of all over the place. And, and this is much more focused. And I think that this is a more adult, adult story. You know, I'll tell you one thing. This show does make me very a lot more excited for Man of Tomorrow. Oh, yeah. Because knowing that John Stewart is a big part of Man of Tomorrow and that, I think it's going to be a really a far more broader, well, I want it to be the Empire Strikes Back of James Gunn Superman. So we'll see. Well, and it might be. We'll find out. All right. Next up, Porter writes, you do catch the John Stewart British accent slip up.
I'm not going to lie. First of all, look, let me say this. Aaron Pierre is a wonderful actor. And by the one, I don't know if you saw it, Rob, where Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre did hot ones. Oh, I did. That was fun. And I love their dynamic. But as tremendous of an actor as he is, there have been a couple of moments in the show where I've caught his natural. Digger. See the dream on my only years until we second rated R under 17 out of mid without parent accents slipping out just a little bit.
I've kind of caught it a couple to I don't know if you've caught that too, but there just been a couple a little most, you know what, that happens with a lot of British actors. To be honest, I sometimes I catch those a little bit, but yes, I did pick up on that. But it wasn't the first time Porter. I've caught it before. All right, just a couple left here. Mark Sipp writes, I feel like Sinestro still has a bigger role to play. Or am I just inclined to think that given his importance in the comics? I'm wondering that too. Rob, what I said earlier, I feel like if all we got of Sinestro so far is all we get, I feel like he served a very strong purpose. It's a we don't need more of Sinestro. I think he served his purpose and served it great. I thought the scene between him and how the prison was fantastic. But now with the man hunter gone and still this lingering drama with the guardians, if I had to guess, I'm going to say 45% chance that we get more Sinestro in this.
And I'll be thrilled if we do. I'm totally fine if we don't, but I know what you think the chances are. I think we have to. Yeah, because he is, well, maybe not as he is kind of the joker to how Jordan, he's a big foil. Yeah. And one of the big, big runs, the Sinestro core war was a big part of Jeff John's run. So it'll be interesting to see how they work that out. All right, let's get back over to the questions here. The next one comes to us from Gabriel. He says, are you a for John? Are you afraid? I still love that. I really do. All right, second, from disaster rights. What do you think she told her grandson? Again, no idea. But Rob, I still think that grandson is a major key part. Again, the show is being played face up. The kid's not hidden. It's right there in plain sight. And I think there is, I think this kid has a bigger role to play in the final three episodes than Sinestro does.
And I'll, I'll make this guess, which by the way, I make totally recant after the next episode. If Hal Jordan is dead, I think it might be that kid who kills him. Because remember, Hal is the one who pointed the alien hit squad towards his grandfather. If that is even really his grandfather, I mean, I don't know. But I, again, I don't know what it is. I don't know if the kid is alien in nature. I don't know if the kid is artificial. I don't know if the kid is truly just a kid that everybody likes. I have no idea. I have no theory. But I am damn sure I don't think we've seen the last of that kid. Yeah. You know what'd be interesting? What if the kid is none of their actual biological kids? What if that kid is just like everybody else in the town? A kid that the, the man hunter saved at some point. And maybe his parents died. I mean, I don't know. They're very well-being. I'm going way off on that. Somebody in the live chat is saying crazy theory.
What if he is abinsur? Yeah, I don't think that's the case. I don't think that's the case. But again, nice wild theory there. Okay. Next up, we've got my five rights, not on board with Hal Jordan having an innocent man killed. Okay. Okay. I was just kind of brought that up about, you know, he's the one who pointed them. I don't think Hal Jordan at all thought he was having an innocent man killed. No, I think if you look at the show and everything that happened in it from Hal Jordan's eyes, not the things Hal Jordan didn't see that we as the audience did get the opportunity to see in here. As far as Hal Jordan understood, this guy is completely in with an intergalactic terrorist. This guy is a militarized arms bearing oppressor of this town serving the manhunter.
And he just pointed the squad towards one of the manhunter's guy. I mean, I am starting to think that guy was more innocent than we all, including me. Initially thought, but there's no reason on earth for Hal Jordan to think that or believe it. There's really nothing that was fed to him in terms of information that would lead him at all to believe that he was anything but a big, huge co-villain in this town along with the manhunter. By the way, also the guy who had Hal shot. Yeah. He also had Hal shot. So let's not forget that. But he also knew that how could probably be fixed. Maybe. But it could have killed him. That easily could have killed him. Anyway, okay. Next up Gabriel writes, John, how come Marvel has never come close to this quality for besides for one division? Well, I mean, to be fair, DC hasn't come anywhere near close to this quality other than Penguin.
I mean, if you're talking television, and so hitting the, hitting the level, here's the funny thing Rob that always strikes me about. I think we're guilty of it too. And our fellow fans are guilty of it. Everybody thinks making that level of excellence is easy. Everybody just thinks it's easy. Oh, why not just make a great movie? Oh, really? Why didn't we think of that? And I think we're all guilty of that. Myself included. But making a show to the level of Juan division is exceptional. Making a show to the level of Penguin is exceptional. It very rarely, very rarely happens. And so, and by the way, you can't discount the fact that this is HBO. I mean, HBO is just the, we've talked about all the time, Rob. HBO is the gold standard. They are it. They are the gold standard of excellence
in the medium of television storytelling. There's just nobody who does it as good as HBO does. And so I don't think it's a coincidence. When you're talking about maybe the best stuff they've done, talking about Penguin and maybe lanterns. We'll see how lanterns turns out. It's not a coincidence that they're both happened to be HBO shows, which is part of the reason why I'm really believing, even though I'm not a potterhead, that this Harry Potter series is probably going to rule. But I don't know, Rob, what would you say to that? Like, why do you think we don't get more consistency with that level of excellence that say, Penguin lanterns, Juan Division has been? What do you think the biggest hurdle to that is? I think the easy answer is that it's really hard to do well. And the funny thing about this, when this started, everybody was really complaining about, well, it's not a cosmic super cop show and set the universe. And now, I mean, to me, I find it to be sort of a really interesting meditation on the whole Green Lantern mythos.
And there's a lot going on in this show that has to do with being a human being. And the idea of being old and past your time, you know, John, I worked for a director a long time ago who made a minor league baseball movie that was wonderful, called Past Time. And in it, it's about a over-the-hill white pitcher who has a young, black phenom getting ready to replace him as the pitcher on this minor league baseball team. And I, it was a lot like lanterns. Well, I know, right? And it was a wonderful story. And Noble William, the character actor, plays the coach of the team, call him a guardian, if you will. And he says to the pitcher who's going to get replaced, he says, look, it's one of my favorite things I've ever heard in any movie. It doesn't matter how good somebody else is. It doesn't make you any better or any worse.
And I always thought that was such a profile. That's why I actually wanted to go to work with that director. I work with him as his director of development for a while because of that line in that movie. And I, the idea of being, of getting old, which is something we're all going to have to deal with, some sooner than others. And being replaced by the young upstart is such, it's so, it's such a pattern of nature in humanity. And I think that having the underpinnings of that to build a show around is something that you don't often get for superheroes. And the same way that that penguin could lean into the, to the criminal empire as opposed to being, you know, the penguin is a larger than life foil for Batman. You really got to dig into the criminal underworld of Gotham and Christian, Christian, Melody. I mean, she was, her turn was incredible, Melody.
And when you can, when you can delve into human nature, the truths of humanity and what it's like to live as a human being within the context and, and WandaVision had that because it was all born out of Wanda's tremendous grief and sorrow. And so when you, when you couple that with a superhero story, that's when you get gold. And it's hard to do, which is, you know, part of the reason why I think Wonder Man works so well. Same the same, you're absolutely right. Same thing that I can't believe they're not going to make a second season that show. Oh, I was, I mean, again, we understood all the, the entire time it was meant to be a one season only show. But man, once they announced they were doing a second season, I'm like, well, yeah, of course you got to do another season. I'm so heartbroken. They're not doing another season on that. Yeah. Anyway, okay, let's get back to it. We got one question left here. And it comes us from seconds from disaster and says, when Zoe said she was going to force Hal to deplete the ring,
notice how she neglected to tell John how my jaw dropped when she started the attack. Listen, I'm so glad you brought that up because Rob, this was one of the points I wanted to make and I totally forgot about it. I love the complexity. There's no simple answers in this show. This show could have gone the way of, oh, no, you don't get it. This, this man, Hunter, is just misunderstood. It's actually a good guy. Oh, look at how she saved the sheriff's life. Oh, look, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. The show doesn't let you forget. This thing is totally willing to kill every man, woman, and child in that city, in that town to save itself. And even when the sheriff is talking to Hal, it was a dual thing. One loyalty and I owe her, but the second thing is, was fear. That man, Hunter, will kill everybody if we don't do what it
wants us to do. Like, yeah, it saved all of us. We owe it. It's protected. But at the same time, show wipe us out without a second thought. Like she will kill all of us. And I love the fact that they don't, the show doesn't pick aside. Like, I think there are parts of the man, Hunter that truly feel. I think the parts of the man, Hunter that really did have affection for John. I think there are parts, although it could have been manipulative, who knows. But at the same time, the show doesn't let us don't get confused, though. This is still the thing that kind of wiped out entire civilizations. This is the thing that is there to serve itself. And it can say it loves all these people. But if it's a difference between slaughtering 20 children and giving itself a five minute head start, it'll slaughter the 50 children or 100 children or whatever. And I love the fact that it does not let us forget that. And, but it doesn't, so it doesn't make it a mustache twirling villain. It shows us some things that we can have some empathy for, but it doesn't let us
forget what it truly is. And I really love that about it. I thought that was great. I really did. But yeah, man, when she starts calling down fire and like literally blowing up these people who are trying to protect her, all for the sake of just a strategic move to try to get how to deplete his ring. That was pretty ruthless, man. I mean, it was smart, but it was, it was pretty ruthless to it the same time. So and the story, by the way, somebody brought it up to in the live chat, the story about her killing end. Like, I keep wanting to say, and Sabanore, which is a totally different character, Abinsur, um, about, oh, yeah, Abinsur even saved my life and showed mercy on me. So I had to kill him. Like, oh, I mean, it sucks. I had to kill him, but she killed him. At least we think she did, but we'll, we'll find out later on. All right, Rob, uh, that, that wraps it up here. Final thoughts as we're getting ready now and we're heading straight into
episode six. Any final thoughts or predictions? What we're getting in episode six? Uh, I, I, I think we're going to find out how's not dead. You think they're going to reveal that in episode six? Yeah. Because this, this show is, it's, it's, we're on the downside. It's, it's amped up the pace. Maybe we'll have a little quiet before the storm, but we're going to find out more revelatory information about how Jordan, that's going to probably pull the rug out from undress again. Yeah. And I think that I think next week is when we get a guy, gardener. I, I think now that we've, how does it have the ring? John give up the ring. There's a ring absence right now. I think that opens the door now for them to bring in guy gardener and to kind of close that loop. Now again, how big of a roll that's going to be? We'll figure it out. We'll find out, but we're, we're heading into it. So all right, guys, that will wrap up this week's lanterns post game show. Thank you
so much for coming along. As we talked about lanterns. Good to have you guys here. I'm not going to lie. I'm loving the show so far. We're heading now in episode six, three episodes left to go. I'm very excited. I want to, of course, thank Robert Meyer, Bernette for joining me here. We will, I guess we'll talk to you tomorrow on the John can't do show tomorrow. Yes, sir. See you tomorrow. And hopefully we'll see the rest for those of you just joining us for this in case you don't know. We do a daily one and a half to two hour live movie discussion show called the John can't be show. And hopefully you guys might want to come along and join us for that as well. All right, guys, that'll do it for us for now. My name's John Kampy. Thanks for love for being here guys. And until next time, my friends. Bye bye. Mr. President, my company formed the explosion on our rig along to per second.
Causing massive water displacement and triggering the tsunami. They all heat the blame on me. Tom Cruise is diggered on us into the specimen and digger is gonna dig us out. From the director of bird man and the revenue. What would happen if I stop? You stole, you freeze the death. That's what? With great power comes great deniability. I'm not the earth, daddy. Digger, see the Traylon law. Only in years until we're second rated under 17 out of mid without parrot.
