About this episode
“This podcast is supported by your Southern California Kia dealers. Around Southern California, it's easy to spend plenty of time behind the wheel.”From the transcript
David and Jean continue their episode-to-episode coverage of HBO's Lanterns with a tightly plotted sixth episode. The fresh takes cover the show's continued strength with character work, particularly the strained dynamic between John Stewart Jr. and his brothers, and a growing unease around Sheriff Carrie and Noah that has Jean on high alert. They also praise the show's grounded, realistic dialogue as a through-line even as the mythology around the Corps and Oa expands. From there, David and Jean move into a full scene by scene breakdown covering the autopsy, the trip to the Fortress of Solitude, and a very large vault the team can't yet open, before wrapping up the episode.
We did some work with Connor M and got his Green Lantern reading list put together on a shared document that everyone can take a look at!

First off, you still have a little time to get in any last minute feedback. We decided to move feedback to its own podcast, which we're going to record. Tomorrow night relative to this podcast. So sorry for the short and window. Part of the short window is that we ran into some technical issues yesterday. You may hear some weird audio issues with Jones recording, some clicking.
Anyway, we were just having a bunch of problems. And I was just pretty exhausted by the end of the day. So we decided to bail and then take a full day break. And then we came back and finished up the podcast. So again, apologies for the delay. And if you want to get some feedback in, you still have time, comics versus at the lorehounds.com. Check the link in the show notes. There's an email address there as well as a link to the link tree. Otherwise, let's get into the episode. Welcome to the comics versus podcast where the lorehounds. I'm your host David. I've never been to an actual autopsy, but I sure do love television version of one. And with me, as always, ready for a three and a half hour podcast. Hi, friend in my zone. What's up?
Yeah, I'm good, man. And welcome to our coverage of season one of Lantern's Episode 6, Bad Optics. Just kidding. We're not going to do three and a half hours. I actually doing the outline today. This is a pretty tight episode of television. It's kind of interesting what goes down. But anyway, we're going to get into all of that today. We got enough feedback this week that we're going to spin off the feedback into its own episode. We're going to record that on Thursday, today's Tuesday. And so if you set in a message of any length of any variety, we're going to cover that on Thursday. And that way we'll just focus in on the episode coverage today. As always, you can contact us at comics versus at the lorehounds.com. There'll be a link in the show notes below. Along with that link, there's a link to the link tree that you can join the conversation
over on our Discord server, our community Discord server. Got lots of good chatter going on over there. And of course, we are an independent podcast. So if you are interested and want to throw us a few bucks or maybe, you know, here's a thing. Throw us a few bucks and then when you write in to correct our pronunciations of names and things like that, we'll actually listen to your feedback. I can't promise. No problem. No problem. No problem. I'll promise. I'm the one that's going to be able to. So anyway, and of course, check out all of our affiliates. We'll shift dust. Alicia is wrapping up her silo coverage. I'm in on about episode five now. And it's like, okay, episode four. Here we go. Finally, like we, episode four, we get answers to things. And it's like, oh, finally. So I'm really excited because I hear nine and ten are pretty hot. Dungeons and do rags as of course, also covering lanterns right now.
Go check out their podcast. They got some spite. You think we're spicy. Get it over and check out those guys. Never mind the music has just started their season three coverage. It's not like that big of a deal. It's more of a season for them because of the way they work. But they just had an episode out on the feeds fresh today about Britney Spears. So it's a very cool conversation. And rings of power is coming up season three and Maryland and Dr. Sarah Brown are doing their analysis of the rituals that we see on screen in season two and doing sort of a full breakdown of episodes and then deconstructing the lore and mythology and relating that to our lives here in the real world. And what ritual means it's a really cool kind of analysis of the show. The first two episodes have dropped. So definitely go check out rings and rituals.
Subscribe. Give them a lesson. A lesson. A lesson. A lesson because they are both academics and we get a lesson. That's a good one. Yeah. I got podcast. The professor. That's right. That lesson. Cool. So again, get you know, if we've got a plenty of enough feedback and we would like more, especially voicemails. So if you feel so inclined, just record it on your voice memo app on your phone, email it to us at the comics versus email address or email us. That's really the best way to get feedback. It's kind of hard for us to grab the the discord comments right now. But you know, we'll take the Patreon messages and the Spotify comments and things like that. And there's a lot to talk about in this show. But first, we're going to get into our fresh takes. Jean, what did you think of episode six? Oh gosh. Maybe it was easier to fly than to stay on the ground.
I hope I mattered. I mean, I mean, yeah, this hit so many great beats for me. The characters stuff that they're doing on this show is really superb. And I think it's really good to have a lot of fun with both how and in junior. Yeah. Just it's just rich. I we actually could spend three and a half hours talking about these two people. And their experiences and how they go through life and how life has shaped them. We could actually do that. And that's a testament to the acting and that's a testament to the, you know, the entire production. Chosen. Yeah. Yeah.
I mean, when I heard his brother call, call him chosen at first, I was like, oh, that's some shit right there. But they kept going back to it. And he knows and he's like, I told you don't call me that. It is so wild because mom is lying. Dad is in a, in some sort of home. Yep. But he's shooting out the windows. And his brothers have taken to calling him chosen. And they're not doing it in a nice way. This family needs help. They've needed help for a long time. And we're seeing all of that play out in this season. Talk about the chickens coming home to roost. Chicken's birds, just birds coming home to roost. Oh, it's, yeah, it's something. Then we have Guy Gardner.
How's your guy? Yeah, as you can say, how's your guy? Guy Gardner was he's just being guy Gardner. He's gardening. He's there. And he's being his. Why does he look like an extra from a rom from a star trek next generation Romulans character with that bowl cut man? I was like, that was weird looking guy Gardner does not care what you think. That's why no, he doesn't. Yeah, doesn't care what you think. It's all about what he thinks. Right. Right. So. And then the last thing that really struck me is that Noah and his mom, Sheriff Carrey, they're both creepy and sus. Creepy. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Okay. The, your sus meters off the chart. I don't trust either one of them. Carrey. Nope. Okay. We got to get in there. There's just something about the way she's moving the way she speaks.
Yeah. I don't, I don't trust her. That's interesting because they were pressing the emotional sympathy. The emotional sympathy buttons for me with her this episode. Oh, you know, they had this sort of, we were talking about it last week too. You know, with the, you know, are these two, do they like each other? Could we see them, you know, shipping? Well, here it is that actually happened. And, you know, she's all broken up about how and how was, you know, we're going to go into it all. But they were getting me with those, the emotional play. That they were setting me, maybe it's just because I like, Carrie McDonald so much. I mean, I can understand it, but her interactions with John, the way she's speaking with him. Okay. You know, and, and thinking about how it's been the entire season just in the way she, she hedges.
It's, it's something, it's always, to me, it feels like, and it, it came through in this episode. It just felt like there's always something being held back by her, even when she's being forthright. Okay. There's like a hint of, for me, there's a hint of, there's more there that she's willing to say. And I just didn't like how in the dinner scene, just how overall friendly, she was with John. Okay. The entire episode just because of how's dev, right, it just felt a little strange to me. Okay. Well, we're going to, when we get into the actual scene by scene, I want you to point out some specifics. Because I, I was not detecting that at all. Yeah. Yeah. Which is, like I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm now anxious for a reveal to know, you know, like, oh my God, John was right all this time.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, these are simply the musings of John. These are not speculations. Predictions or speculations. These are just my musings. Thank you so much. You just hear asking questions. That's it. Just asking questions. Fair enough. All right. So we'll see, we know internet points have been wagered. Nobody get their rings in a bunch if, John turns out to be right or wrong in either case. All right. So super sauce, carry and, and Noah as a duo here. I, what are things I really loved and have been loving about the show is sort of the realism and the dialogue. And especially the way that John is talking to his brothers and the way that he was talking to Hal. You know, what's up Stuart? Sup man. You know, like, it's just very, there's just a, just kind of a realism in the dialogue.
So somebody else somewhere else complaining about how they're, you know, the swearing, the swearing sounds off to them in this show. I was like, no, it's like, it's dead on. It's used in the right ways. It's used in the right places. So I just really like the, the, the ground in this of it because when we get into all the ring stuff and, oh, and guardians and, you know, starfish. It's nice to know that at the end of the day, we're still just kind of still here on earth. And we're still dealing with, you know, human beings. Right. Right. And I found it interesting. The same as you were saying, they're family, man. The family is in a bad way right now. And I found it interesting that John actually seems to have more feelings for a dead Hal than he does for his living father, John senior. He's going out of his way to solve Hal's murder. He's, you know, run and gain.
He's doing investigations. He's putting himself in danger in a lot of ways. He's really, he's jeopardizing this big deal that him and his brother, Marcus have set up. So he's putting, he's investing a lot into figuring out what happened with Hal. Meanwhile, his father, his flesh and blood, he's having a, you know, a serious problem is adapting to his new living situation. His mother, right, is, you know, now, you know, who knows what the state of their, their marriage is. But he's like, let consequences be consequences. That guy, you know, right, he's going to send air now for him. But still, like, that's, that's an interesting weight, right. Where am I going to put the weight of my energy, the bulk of my energy? I'm going to put it into this dead guy who never told me that he really, you know, he never verbalized. What did Carol say? You know, he, he probably never said it. He probably liked you, but never said it.
Yeah. Yeah. And so the, again, what you're saying is with the, with the character works that they're doing in this show is, is pretty incredible. And it's kind of, I don't know, it's kind of a lot of fun because they're putting these into these really weird positions. I really want to talk about the diner scene with Howling just a minute, too, and like the setup that was going on with there. I do have a little bit of a theory. And I've got a sound clip when we get to that scene, and I'll have a better sound clip when we get our feedback on Thursday. But I'm pretty sure that a certain someone is involved in a certain something, and we'll talk about it on the other side of the break. But I have audio evidence. I'm bringing some receipts. Wow. I've got a working theory. Okay. But I need the rest of everyone to, you know, help me see if they, if they hear it too, if I, if I'm right.
And we can get played Reddit detectives here. No, this is good. Well, since we don't, we're not doing the feedback this time. Let's just go ahead and take a look. Oh, before we take our break, however, and I will put this in the show notes, like not in the link tree, but just straight up in the show notes. It's also on the discord. We have one of the channels on the discord is resources, like links to other pages and to like the show tracker and things like that. I corner, we took corners reading list for Green Lantern, like reading order. And we turned that into a Google, a nice clean Google document and put that on to the public share side of our, our Google site. And so you can go and see what corner has put together for us. It's really amazing. It's really amazing. That's, that's, that's shit is amazing. Like you, you know, kudos and bravo because to take the time out to do that, just, you know, really says something about the type of community that we have.
100% that for you to do that, that really, really goes above and beyond anything that we could ever expect from folks who listen to us. So thank you. A thousand times over because really intrually, some of the list is really good actually. Yeah, it was really good. Yeah, no, no, the list is pretty good. So you've read a lot more Green Lantern than I have. That's was started. But yeah, the some stories are, yeah, this is, this is great. Here's a little pro tip to when you go to look at the document and you're like, oh my god, it said pages long. I made it one of those infinite scroll documents to it doesn't have the fake or the page breaks because like, why do you need page breaks for a digital document? Anyway, there's an index. So it tells you sort of an order you can sort of know what's on the thing. We use the headings. So if you have that, the document tab heading thing open on the side of the Google Doc, you can see all of those and jump right to them.
And then the very last thing at the bottom of the document is this compiled required reading order for the blackest night sub story feature, right? I don't know what the blackest night, what that actually means. But he's got 26 of the stories that are the sort of core boil down required reading. Like if you want to get into this one sub story called the blackest night, it's there and just sort of, you know, gives you a shorter list as opposed to reading all of the other stuff that he's lifted there before. And then if you have any questions about it, you know, obviously hop onto the desk or or give us an email and then we can, you know, forward that to to corner. But yeah, thank you again, Connor for doing that. That's very cool. And I'll make sure to put a link directly. You won't have to go to the link tree or anything. It'll just be right there in the show notes. Just pop over, check it out. So Google Doc, you can download it as a PDF for yourself or make a copy of it over into your own Google thing.
It should be open. And if it's not, then just give me an email and I'll make sure that you get a copy one way or another. All right. Let's take our first break. And then when we come back, we will get into the scene by scene. This podcast is supported by your Southern California Kia dealers. Friends, that sunset is theτί come to be. ige people. Now at disown dot com. All right, we're back in 2006, John, is it 2016? No, 2016, I'm sorry, I'm mistyped there, right? It's 2016, right? I think it's, no, I think this is 2026. 20, I think you're right, man, I'm, no, this is 2026. 2026, yeah, yeah, okay, it's right there. I just scrubbed the scene. All right, my bad. In 2026, John pitches his idea to build a series of 40 arcs, ginormous panic rooms that can house 20,000 people at a time. After a successful presentation, he receives a call from his mother who tells him that how
Jordan wants to apologize. John drives to Rushville and meets Hal at the diner. They argue and John strikes him and then leaves. This is a pretty interesting and complex scene. There are some lore things that I want to touch on really quick because there seem to be, I don't know if you want to call these Easter eggs or links out to the wider DC universe. But the first thing I saw, I thought was Midway City. Is that like an analog for Chicago or Detroit or something like that? Midway. I mean, the name is Midway, right? No, it's for Chicago. Midway. It's Chicago. Okay, cool. Yeah. Got it. And so that would make sense. Then if he's driving to Rushville, I did do a Google map check. It's like three to four hours. If it's Detroit or Chicago, but it's drivable in the time. Yes.
Of the show. And I know some people were like, oh, is this some John Snow jetpacking? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, they were, they're actually playing it straight. We hear about a giant starfish, which I believe refers to star-o, the conqueror. Yes, yes, yes. Can you, that was in, is that the suicide squad? Yes. That was the last suicide squad movie. Yes, yes. So, it was 2016 or something? Oh, gosh. I'll look it up. You talk about it. It might have been a row. So, star-o is all over DC Comics. Sometimes, most of the time, a villain is like a giant starfish that wants to take over the universe, take over the galaxy. Okay. So, the inclusion of that character from the movie is definitely tying in. This DC, you, that James Gunn, is building to what came before certain aspects of it.
Okay. So, they want us to see, I think, the links between those guardians, I'm guardians, so, gosh, those suicide squad movies and that universe, and I understand that we are inhabiting the same one and not, you know, the Robert Pattison Batman universe or not, definitely not what came before the Justice League universe that Snyder did. So, that was the 2021 movie. Okay. For a suicide squad. And then they mention Colonel Drake Hott. Is that a name we should, I mean, we should track. Does that have historical, not a DC character. Is it original to the show, I believe. Okay. Right on. Great. So, what I thought was really interesting about John's pitch is that it was, it's an exposition dump disguised as a business pitch because, you know, we obviously, we learn about how
being locked up, we learn about star, we learn about, you know, John wanting to be an architect, both the pitch and the phone call with Bernadette are these really big exposition things because basically we ended part one of the season last episode. And so we're in a big reset here. And so we've got to reset the playing board, the, the pieces on the playing board. And, you know, so we learn about, you know, how's dad. So obviously there's some separation there. We learn about Bernadette and how talking, we learn that how was locked up. We learn that John is this architect now that he's built this business with his brother, Marcus. So it's a really interesting construct, the way that they were able to get a whole bunch of circumstance and set up in this sort of very efficient pipeline of the pitch and the phone call.
And these are like do these arcs have any relevance to the DC story world or okay. But what he's building it for does because he mentions metropolis, which is from the Superman movie of last year and the destruction that happened in that film. And also what happened in Russia. So they're building upon what happened before what we've seen in the DCU and also what's happening now just to show where John currently is without the ring. Right. He's still trying to save people. Right. Man, good point. That's actually a really good point. I was thinking though, trying to move 20,000 people, which is about 800,000 if you can build for you from trying to get them down in the arcs, 20,000 people. That's a lot of people to feed. I mean, yeah. You got to be living down there already. You can't like run there in an emergency situation. David David. Am I getting too realistic?
This is too sciencey for me. You're right. Come on. Nine months of sniper missions. I just know. Yes. Yeah. We could move 20,000 in a blink of an eye teleportation. We could teleport 20,000. That's what we're talking about. Did you find it interesting that John took Bernadette's word about assuming that how wants to apologize because he drove. He got off the phone and he drove the three, four hours that it takes to get there without question. Okay. I found it interesting that he said hello Bernadette and my mom. Right. So that's number one. It's the hello Bernadette that got me like, oh, distance because in, and you know, black households, you not calling them. You're not calling them on first name. You're not calling somebody that comes visit your mom by the first name.
You know, so that's not happening. So this is the level of what you say is distance, right? It's just shown here by the casualness that he's using that name and she is answering to it because it is what it is. He's used to him a reference. It is what it is. You know, there's no pushback. Right. It's 10 years probably of Bernadette. Mm-hmm. I'm not calling him mom anymore. It's Bernadette. That's where we're at. Super efficient storytelling. Yeah. Because right away we know that there's this distance between them. And then the house that like, okay, well, what's happening? Right. Exactly. Yeah, exactly. And he says, why don't you know John? And not John. But you know, has been not John. He specifically says how's dad and refers to Bernadette, his mother as Bernadette. So there's some blame being assigned to different parties here by John.
Julie. And I heard another part of a conversation to about, and I can't remember it now. It was basically like why John chose her to shoot the apple off of her head because there's some anger in there as well. Right. There's a lot of, she was the driving force behind his education training, whatever it was. Yeah. It was really horror. They were in it together, but I said, yeah. Your point being, yes, they were in it together, his parents, but who was the driving force, as you said, it was Bernadette. And I think he recognizes that his mom was the one who was really, you know, going all in on, restraining and unrelenting about it. And perhaps that he just saw his father as someone who was just going along because he remembers
his father, you know, I'm sure his brothers have told him about the trauma that his father had. What they, but he's not willing to, he's not willing to sort of take care. Well, I mean, he does send Aaron eventually, but you know, if there's going to be concert, he lets his father suffer concert. Yeah, there's levels, there's levels. There's levels. Right. And he's not just like whatever, he did call Aaron. He did say you got to go deal with this. He could have just said whatever sent him jail, sent him to psych. I don't care. And I think um, was I surprised that he listened no because it wasn't about her. It was about him and how. But that's what I'm saying. Okay. That's that too. I guess I'm saying both of those things because he took her word that he that she's representing. First of all, like, wait, you're talking to how I'm like, that's weird.
But then that he took that for truth, that some kind of truth, that how wants to have some kind of interaction with him. So Bernadette is not a, she's like, can could he, could he actually believe what she said? I guess she's never, has she ever lied? She's never actually lied to him. So I guess maybe there's on a, on that level, there's not a breaking of the trust. There's more of a breaking of the trust. Like you're my mom. You're supposed to be the one person in the world who unconditionally loves me and makes sure that I'm safe. But you were shooting apples off my head and dropping me off in bad parts of the neighborhoods. So I guess there's not a violation of trust of truthfulness. It's more a violation of trust of you have a duty to care for me. Yeah. And I also think that he, he needs, junior needs. And he hears that how wants to apologize, wants to say sorry. Yeah. I think that's something that he needs to hear from how in order to move on.
Because, but what is he cares, see, that's the point is, there's like a why does he does, because he does care. He does care. And I think that's the whole point of the last five episodes. He does actually care about this entire thing, right? He wanted to be the green, the green lantern. He built his entire life around becoming the green lantern. And you know, it didn't happen. And I think he, you know, blames how Jordan for it and that happening just like, you know, his parents blame how Jordan. So for him, I think he needs that in order to move on. It's like a closure of a chapter in his book. Is it a closure though? I actually have an audio part of it. No, that part of it. Sure. There's a part of it. That's the relationship is ended. But that we can't get to another side until he hears those words, some contrition for
what he feels that how put him through. What he feels that way. But why does he care what how he thinks about that? That's the question I'm asking him. Like, oh, he cares what how thinks about him. Even though how treats him like shit and you know, they go to jail and all this stuff, he actually cares what how has to say. Because if he didn't care, he just move on with his life. You know, no, I don't think he cares what how thinks of him. I think he wants an admission from how that he fucked them over. But why? What good does that do him or anybody? I think that recognition that I can somebody that's me harm in my eyes and doesn't mean that I forgive you. Doesn't mean that, you know, all of a sudden we're best pals, but it's like, okay, you're acknowledging the harm that you cause me. I think that's in any sort of situation when you perceive someone as causing you harm
whether directly or indirectly, it goes a long way for your own personal journey to hear that person express their contrition for what they may have caused you to go through. So it's not a complete, unfeeling person, which I realize. Right. I mean, like say, say somebody, a true narcissist, right? Not just in a self-centered, but like somebody who, and I don't want to misuse the terms because I know sociopath, psychopath, these are the definite things. And I don't have the definition straight in my head. But there are people who just don't have empathy and the ability to understand what another person is feeling. If that person's like that, then it doesn't matter what they say. They're going to say whatever they're going to say because they're never actually going to feel that. They're never actually going to have the potential. Right. But it doesn't mean that you don't want to hear it from the person that caused you harm. That you feel caused you harm.
It doesn't mean that you don't want to hear them be contrite for the role that they've played in your life being the way that your life is. Right. There's an interesting audio clip that I was going to save for the very last scene. But I think it's really, it's actually as we're breaking this down that it creates a really interesting book end with this opening phone call from Bernadette to have this final snippet from the phone call with Marcus. So let me do this. I, I, I, what about we? Was that what you just saying to pitch to make good for everything you got and I didn't? Hey, listen, please, I'm not going home. You never came home. You've been stuck in Rushville for 10 years and you ain't leaving until you finish whatever the hell it is. You and how motherfucking Jordan started out there. I just pray it don't kill you like it killed him. Marcus calls it out straight. You never came home.
You never left Rushville. Right. And I think if, in another universe, if hell doesn't die, but they leave on those terms, I think John can close the book. This chapter because he's not going to ever get the act of contrition that he's looking for from how and then he could put this behind him. Right. But because hell dies, now it's a whole other thing that Rushville has on him. So what's interesting then too is that how plays the fool does his usual thing with John treats him rough, dirty, right? And it is kind of just a big jerk to him. But then after John strikes him, he's how was like really scared.
There was a kind of a fee like this like a don't tell any way you were here. Don't say anything to anybody. Keep it the secret. How was like a free like there was a groveling ness to him, a kind of a, you know, please don't, you know, and the whole thing, you know, the whole conversation from beginning to end to the moment John walks out, it's almost like one long con that how is running on him in a way to do what, to set John up because I think how knows that he's marked, that he's not going to like he, whatever he'd been working on. So he wanted to get John there because he knows that the only person who can solve and bring closure to the whole actual situation, whatever's actually going on here is John
Stewart. He trusts and knows John so well that that's the guy and he's going to be, he needs to be the green lantern and he needs to figure out what's going on really here. So do you think that the punch in the nose reset, reset how like tapping the ring resets the charge? Because he was changed after that punch. Right. And that's when he got really kind of freaked out. And I think and how says I can't believe I'm dead, right? Like, you know, even the halacram was like, oh, shit, God, you know, he says in his, his eulogy, like I can't, I can't actually believe I'm dead. So that's an interesting point because after it was a slap or a punch, I kind of punched him. He punched him. Okay. But that wouldn't cause the cotton necessarily in the same way.
So that's interesting because then he really does change. He's afraid of dying. He's not afraid of John. No, no. He's afraid of whatever is about to go down. And here's this thing that I want to play for you. And I'll have a better clip of it for feedback and I'll have more evidence. Because we hear this sound two other times. And I got those audio recordings. I just couldn't get everything stitched together and sounding nice. Okay. Do the comparison. But listen. You're afraid. Absolutely fucking tear. Okay. Did you hear that? You hear me play together? Yeah. Right here. Yeah. What is that sound? Somebody flying like somebody flying in either coming in or leaving. Somebody coming in. Somebody's coming in and we hear the sound twice more very distinctly.
And I'll bring the receipts on Thursday. Nice catch. I was like, I was like, because I heard that and I was like, oh. And and why did I I replayed something because I miss it? Because I got like distracted or something. And I just, and I was like, wait a minute, that sound like I kind of accidentally caught it. So yeah. I think, and of course we get more of this great exposition about the pandas and the the construct doesn't have to be that green. That green. But yeah. I think whatever is going on, Guy Gardener is deep, deep, deep involved in this. Hmm. Okay. Who else makes that sound? We hear Garry. Garry twice. Yeah. We hear twice more in this episode. God. When the semester did escape. Sinestro did escape. He was jail broke.
So. Uh. Yeah. I have. I think this guy. I. I'm. I'm. I'm saying. Uh. I'm not. Am I speculating here? I'm saying he's involved. I'm saying he's more involved than he's letting on. Did he pull the trigger? Who? Who's going to, who else would have done it? Why would they have done it? I mean, that's the, I mean, we're going to find out in two episodes, hopefully. Uh, who and why? But yeah. I. I don't know what else to make because we hear the sound very distinctly twice more in this episode. So they're laying. They're laying breadcrumbs out for us to pick up on. All right. Next scene, John returns home and receives a call from Sheriff Kerry about John. He drives back to Rushville. And we pick up from where we left off at episode one. We learn about how moving back to Rushville after he was released from prison.
His attempts to make amends and his relationship with Kerry. So going, going back to episode one. And we were all like, oh, he's checking the ring. What's going on? He's got to go T and all. There's just no way. I don't know about you, but there's just no way that I could have predicted this story to end up this like this is wild, man. No way, no way. Didn't I see this happen? Yeah. Why did he check for the ring? That's the question that I do have. Why did he look at his hand? Did he want to just make sure that he wasn't wearing a ring? That is because he hasn't had a ring in a long time. He was in prison. He was in prison. And then he had to get him in prison on earth. They took that ring away from him.
So why did he check the hand? And that is, I hope that gets answered because it just can't be like a function. Let me just double check. You know, I don't think it's that. I don't think it's a double check. Just to make sure I don't think so. Right. Right. I thought, okay, so this is a, this is a weird little tangent. You know, hats are very idiosyncratic. Like, not only does the hat, a hat have to fit your head and kind of match your style. You as a person need to inhabit that hat in a way that you and the hat, like it's an extension of you and you're an extension of it. Like, there's a, there's a relationship between somebody wearing a, I mean, you can throw a baseball cap on your head, whatever. But to wear a big ass white hat, like, carry does, that's a big fucking hat.
And, and she rocks it. I'm sorry. She just absolutely rocks that hat. So I've, I've just got to get myself, I just got to get my, my, my hot take off on there. And it's interesting, too. It's a white hat. It's not around. I'm telling you. I'm telling you. She's suspect. And of course, we were shipping the, shipping these guys a little bit and sure enough there we go. They had something going on. And she says to, and the show, man, it's crazy. It's always laying tracks and she's like, use the back door. It's like, why? It's like, oh, well, we find out why later. Anything else that, so on the suspect, Sheriff Kerry, like, what? In this conversation was tripping your wires. It's not the words that she's using.
It's just, and I don't think it was much of this conversation because this conversation was really about him. And I felt the genuineness in that. But as she's, as they're working away and she's like, come for, you know, stay at his house. Right. You know, I have the key. It's, why, why does she want him to stay? Okay. Well, he's ready to go back home. There's, you know, he's not involved in the murder as far as she knows. Right. He's not a Green Lantern. He's not a cop. He's an architect. He's not going to help with the solving of this murder. Why is she asking him to stay? And not only stay, you know, you can stay at house house. Do you think what about this?
Did Hal and Carrie have kind of a plan or some contingencies? Did they discuss like was she aware of what Hal was working on? Because I don't think he was just there to mow people's lawns. It doesn't seem that way though. It doesn't seem to me that she was prepared for his death in that moment. And he even, and John even later calls it out. She, he's like, you're too real to throw a fake cry at me. Just throw some fake tears at me. And that's another thing. I'm like, is she though? Is she too real to, though, fake cry? Mm-hmm. Now why even say that? To throw us off the track. To get me to sympathize. They're like, we know David. He's going to sympathize with Carrie. And he's like, I'm going to go to the airport. At that point, wait, why even say that? Because she's like, I could be the murderer. Yeah. And he's like, no, I think it's a really good, it can't be you.
No way. I think it's a really good, I think it's a really good red herring, isn't it? To throw us off the scent. So yeah, just and then when she invites him to, I guess when she invites him to dinner. Yeah, well, no, hold, say that for now. I was just curious about this scene. Okay. I was tripping your wire. So it was just, you know, I, yeah, he's not involved and any of the shamanigans. Let that man go home to his life. You already know that he's hated in this town. But he came to hear how he's apologized. She doesn't know. She wasn't privy to that. I mean, he doesn't, but then, okay, all right. Because he just, he wants to find out that's what I was saying before about the diner scene is that how was planting that was like doing some manipulation to get John invested back
into the dynamic because he knows that if he didn't survive, whatever was about to happen, only John could be. John is the only one who's going to care about solving his murder. But he didn't care. He was ready to go home. He did go home. Until he got the call. Yeah, right. So, okay. There's a shot of how on the bleachers, and Carrie and Junior are walking out of the field. Yeah. And you just see how in the bleachers become less and less and less as they walk away from the body. That just stuck with me for, I don't know, for the last day and a half.
Interesting. Just that scene because I really felt in the diner, the diminishment of how Jordan. And watching them walk away from the body and just seeing the body becoming golfed in darkness in the snowstorm or whatever. Right. And the point where you don't even, it's a silly what almost, you know, but the opposite is actually happening in the show. How is getting bigger and bigger? Yeah, I know. I know. That's what I'm saying. That's why it's stuck with me. Right. Because how in no way in the context of the story is diminished. Right. But how himself in the context of their lives looks to me. A shell of himself. Interesting. And that moment that he's in the, in the diner. So yeah, that's just something that stuck with me. Okay. Cool. Well, let's take another quick break and then we'll pick up with a scene again and go
from there. And we're back. We did not take a short break, which was almost a near 24 hour break. We ran into some technical issues last night. And then I think I was kind of crashed out. I had a long day. You know, we do this on this is not our full time job. So, you know, we have our full lives and then we do this when we do this. And so yeah, I think yesterday I was, I was a little punchy when I was, yeah, you crashed out, bro. Yeah. You out of it. You were done. You were done. What's the tech company? You were done. Oh, my God. You know, and that's the thing that tech issues can just, oh, they just sap your energy, create a vanity and we're ready to roll. We're going to hit up with scene three. This is a little bit of a combined scene at dinner. Sheriff Kerry talks to Maggie who covers for John.
Wait, at the diner. Did I say at the dinner? Sorry, at the diner. I can read my own notes. Sheriff Kerry talks to Maggie who covers for John. Kerry deputizes John and they head for the morgue to discuss the autopsy results with Bitsy, the medical examiner and then head for the story. Where they find a very large vault in a storage container. That's interesting. That's like one of those M Escher things where it's just sort of recursive that they're unable to open. Kerry invites a now omnivorous John to dinner. So we got a lot going on here. A lot of set up. We got Maggie. I was talking about Maggie, I guess real quick. Yeah, good. I knew it was her. I knew like, you knew who she was. The watch girl. Yeah, yeah. I knew it was the watch girl. I don't know. I just knew it. And they made a point of John and at the end of season, episode five, picking up that
watch and then giving it to the young girls. And there were two girls there and then I thought for a second, maybe it was the other girl who shook her hair or whatever, but really it's about the watch because later on, it connects up with the fact that it's easy to watch. I just suppose I would. I just, this is the, this has to be one of the kids that was in that scene. So I kind of knew. And then just the conversation, I was wondering why John would not tell Kerry that he punched how, right, that he was at the dinner with how, right. And what was that about? What was his calculation with that? Is he just as untrusting of Kerry as I am or is there, how does he have other reasons? But it's, I think it's in this scene where, you know, they're talking to them. I'm kind of throwing off a little bit by, by Kerry here. And, you know, the combination of the scenes, especially when she just invites him to dinner.
There was something like, I don't know, there was something this, she's working hard at being friendly. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I don't know if I agree with you, but I got you. No, I know you don't agree with it, but it's just like, I think what you just said is exactly what I was thinking and was struggling to say. She's working too hard at it. Right. And it's given me pause. Which is funny. Yeah, go ahead, grab. No, go ahead. I was just going to say I was really loving the playful interaction and on, not only the character vibe, but that Aaron Pierre and Carrie McDonald's, they're working really with their on-screen chemistry. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Really good. Forances. And I was just loving the playful thing like the whole deputizing thing. I think I got that audio quote here. Let's. I mean, it needs me at the morgan. Oh, you want company?
I love an autopsy. That's very thoughtful and weird, but you're a civilian. Go ahead and deputize me right now. By the power vested in me, you're fucking deputized. Boom. That would have piece of shit. Just that there's this like, there's banter, there's this playfulness, there's this ease between them that I just. I from a just a viewer standpoint, I'm just digging their, their energy and it's interesting that you find her that same energy is sus. But you said the same thing about her banter with how? You guess. Okay. All right, calling me to call me out here on. No, no, but I'm just saying it's the same energy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you're holding me to account here. You're not letting me ship my position. No, you know, both of these guys is the same type of feel, right? Sure.
So what's real and what's not? That's interesting. That's what's got me thinking. Okay. All right. No speculation. Just questions. Those are my musings. That's it. The musings of John. Yes. So, and I think, well, I was thinking about why it doesn't, he say anything about being at the diner and why he just sort of lets it slide when Maggie Wingsett him is because how said tell no one, like keep it absolutely secret. And that was, that's what's interesting is is that how so in that moment, he's so afraid. He's not afraid of John or having been struck by John. But I think it's like you said yesterday now that the punch kind of reset him a little bit, got him off of his asshole protein routine. And in that moment, he was like really authentic.
And I don't think John had ever seen him like that before. That disturbed by something. And I think, like I was saying before, that's all the kind of play that how was trying to make to get John invested to stay and to do the investigation. And so I think the implicit promise. Is that John is going to tell no one about that he was involved. Now, where I question it is, why didn't he say anything about Billy and the other town, you know, residents who beat, you know, who they get in a fight with around the beacon. Because that's obvious. That has nothing to do with how's murder. That's just some, you know, people being roughions, right? You know, and he defended himself. Yeah, I would have spoiled dinner, but he shouldn't have kept that secret. That's the one that confuses me. I mean, I don't know if he fully trust Kerry. I think I think John's, I think how's message is was basically trust no one.
He didn't save that. No, yes. But the implication is no one is to be trusted. Period. You know, he's not trusting this all white town, whether Kerry, whether Sheriff Kerry was cool with them 10 years ago or not. Right. You know, he's not going to be true. Well, you don't believe Maggie that they're not racists. You know, no, I don't believe her. So, so he's not, you know, he, I don't think him not telling Kerry that he beat up her excursion in some local towns folk. Wasn't surprising to me because I'm not telling no cops what I did. You know, saying, right. So I think that, yeah, it's just, I don't know when, when she and Hal started their relationship while Hal was in jail, according to her, right? Because we don't have Hal's version of this.
We have her version of this. So allegedly they started this relationship while he's in jail, writing each other blah, blah, blah. And then he comes to the town for her, right? But then we find out from her that he's doing all this other stuff that's not particularly for her. Because he's actually, he's engaging the people of Rushville trying to make amends for what happened, right? Yeah. And that to me is a little bit sus because we have about how? About how? Because when John shows up and says, okay, you know, hit me, like you know, not hit me, but like, okay, you give me your apology. And he's like, what a apology. What are you talking about? He's his usual sarcastic, sardonic self. And I'm like, oh, this is not the behavior of a changed man who's done his time and he's seeking penance and trying to make recompense, you know, with the townsfolk. This is how doing how? And I don't wonder if his, can I mow your lawn?
Can I carry your groceries home? Wasn't deep cover investigation? It could have been, but notice both Bernadette and Sheriff Kerry are saying that he's a changed person. Do you believe it? I don't believe them because again, you don't believe how can change, well, we know how can change because I know how to change. Yeah, we know that how I Graham is like a marker of difference between character. How can change? But the way that there, that both of them have spoken to John about how, how himself is like, I'm not there yet. He's telling John this basically like apology. I got nothing to apologize for you for. I did 10 year, I did a 10 year bid for you. I took the fall. Yeah. You know what I mean?
So I don't think this change and how is, yeah, I don't buy it. I don't buy what they're selling either Bernadette, obviously Bernadette. Now we know Bernadette was lying. I'm not buying Sheriff Kerry. There. I'm loving this show. I'm loving the track that they laid down with Sheriff Kerry and how just the lightest hint of their kind of into each other and there's kind of a vibe. And then they're able to pull that thread and then create this whole other relationship that they have after he gets out of, you know, starting from prison and whatever. And it just see, it's like, oh, yeah, that kind of makes sense. I mean, that is just really nuanced writing and just deaf character play portrayal by the actors. And then just these complexities of the politics of personality, not politics as in government politics, but in like how you're fronting and how people are reacting to you and how
are you trying to get them to kind of do this or that in your actions and your behavior. I like I'm loving the dynamics of the show at this granular level. It's a very satisfying show in that regard. Sorry, I just had to geek out for. No, yeah, yeah. I had to glaze a little bit. I glaze the show a little bit. So we go over to the morgue with Bitsy, who's just like what should I care about? Why the load of sunshine, Bitsy is. Oh, I can't wait to grab a cup of coffee with Bitsy. Well go Huskers. The Skurs as Hal says later. The Nebraska Corn Huskers football team, this is basically religion for I think this part of the country. Third NCAA, a division one football team representing University of Nebraska at Lincoln in the big 10 conference. I guess they've played every home game at the Memorial Stadium since 1923 and sold out
every game since 1962. Like it's crazy. And they've got like, I don't know, eight all time victories among their division or something. I'm going to get in trouble with the football people. Hey, we're not the right spot. They're going to come to you, bro. They're going to come. I can miss pronounced glad. Yeah. I can talk. We can talk. Yeah. Hey, yeah. I got this. Let me just say, let me just say the Nebraska Corn Huskers. Have fallen off the face of theirs as a college football team. Last time they were relevant was when Lawrence Phillips was in the backfield. And so let's just let's move on. Move along. All right. Fair enough. Fair enough. They go over to me. You did at me. Anybody can act me about that. We don't have a we don't have a sports affiliate podcast in the Lorehounds network. There's there's plenty. There's more sports podcasts than we can even imagine.
So we're going to just move along with that. They go over to the the what do we call it? The fortress of storage. I love John too. He's like, well, we could hack his phone, trace his movements. Or we could just do like good detective work, right? Just look at the obvious clues that are in front of you. Exactly. That's funny though. It has the bird on it, which is interesting. But they find this very large vault, which we had an experience of a small one. So we understand the mechanics of this thing. But it's ginormous. So what the hell is going on? How did he get it? Where did it come from? How did he get it delivered? So yeah, I mean, talk about mystery. Talk about introducing a mystery. Any particular thoughts? No, I just want to know what's in the vault. Okay. What is he safeguarding? He's safeguarding something. Is he safeguarding it or is it?
Does it have one of those? Is it a bag of holding? Is it like one of those train fold space portal whole things where you can store stuff? Or is it a yeah, because that's where that's where John got the lantern from the first time. Right. But that was like a little one. I know. That's why I want to know what's in this vault. I want to know what's in that void. There's something there. Gotta be. So they try to use the voice trick. And I just love how it plays out. But first of all, we have to talk about Buttercup really quick. We all know this song. It was like Buttercup. And I googled it. It was like, what? The heart part about David's joint right there. I can see David.
You can't. And David is swaying. I don't know why he's swaying a minute. There's been a while since I've seen you sway. It's hard to pull audio clips because you just want to like, oh, wait, this is the good bit. Where do I cut it off? You know, I can't run like super long clips. So that was a little frustrating. But obviously we all know that song, 1968, the foundations, Colin Young singing league vocals, big hit number one on the top 100 in the billboard top 100 in 1969. Certified gold and really quick and blah, blah, blah, blah. Fun song. But obviously he that's what he tries to give Carrie for her pet name, which is cute. But the obviously the vault is like, no, dude, no, just no. And I think it is the first vault. How was actually on the speaker phone?
He was actually alive. So the vault was able to understand that that was an actual live communication, not a playback recording. So that's kind of, you know, that's that's some serious AI in that in that vault. No, I think the first vault was wasn't activated on house voice. It was strictly like the password activated. This this vault has an extra layer that is not going to open unless it's house voice that opens it. So again, you think the hologram will work? Yes. Okay. Because the because I think what the vault is looking for is like actual interaction. Yeah, I think that has a limited AI. It's like, oh, okay, you are you there? Yeah, I'm here. Oh, okay, cool. Like what color is what color my eyes? You know, whatever, like you can actually have a back and forth with you. Validate. No, I think hologram will work. Okay. At least that's what junior is counting on. Junior is counting on the hologram working.
He juniors like already a couple of steps ahead of me. I didn't even think it's really. He worked guy to get the ring. He's just, yeah, he's all up. He's all about it. He's actually pretty good. Well, let's move on to scene four while buying beer. Remember, don't forget the beer. John gets a call about his father who's just been moved into the comfort cove facility. And then John is confronted by a standee of Guy Gardner. This is our first on screen for the show picture of Guy Gardner selling some, what was it? Oh, where is it? We had some pictures of it in the discord. People were making fun of it. Whatever that drink was. And after John activates the beacon, he has a little play time with some of the locals bringing new meaning to the term Fafo. Those guys. Anyway, at dinner, we'll talk about it here. At dinner, we learn that the secret son of the man hunter is interested in politics.
I'm not sure he can't. Kerry gets a call that John Jr. was actually in an altercation and then proceeds to throw his ass in jail. Oh, they heard his electro punch, power punch repeat. We peep. Jim teacher. Oh, I'm sorry, athletic director. Yes. Oh, man. Yeah, go. First of all, this whole don't forget the beer. Like again, sheriff Kerry, like, what is that? Don't forget the beer. Does John Jr. looks like a person that's going to come to your home and bring you some beer? I know she's calling back to when they went to make it work. Oh, that's right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, I get that, but it's just like because how brought the beer that time?
Yeah, that's just a deep cut. There's too much of a deep cut for me, Kane. I'm not trusting you at all. And then your son is creepy. You know, as a creepy ass boy, you got living in your house. And it's not even a boy. That's a grown ass man. Tell me he's a teenager, like 17. That kid is at least 35. And no big. I don't. I don't like it. Something creepy about him, just the way that he was sitting at the table. Oh, you know, I know, Ma, you don't have to tell. I know about you and we know you know, I already knew that you knew. And before you open your mouth, you just sitting there just like, well, he probably deserved it. Talking about his father. Right. Right. That was in the little scene, but it was funny though. He's like, you beat up my dad. Oh, yeah, he probably. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, sorry about that. Yeah. No, no, no, but it's a delayed response. It's a delayed thing because at first he's like, wait, you beat up my dad. And then later, yeah, when he gives me a suit.
He's like, yeah, it's positive. I don't know where he about it. He's kind of a jerk anyway. So yeah, I don't, I don't trust the people in that house. And you know, let me just say one last thing before I give it off, get you go. nào, Kat who Weight Dance and Shadow overseas director, serys. And then, and then and then it's a scorpion. You remember? That was soعป I pay hard earned cash, put it down on the table to go watch. His black man kick ass like that. You know what I mean? That's what I appreciated that scene. And the thing about it is Guy Gardner putting up a green lantern signal. In the middle of the Russian.
You could do. Like my gosh man read the room. But the point of of guy is like I don't care. I don't care that you blame the green lanterns for this. I wasn't that green lantern. So I don't give a damn what you think. I'm going to put this here. Your feelings might be you know heard about it. You might feel the way about it, but one you can't do anything about it. That's number one. You're not going to do anything to me. And number two is like get over it. And that is Guy Gardner just unflinchingly. A egoist not even taken for a moment to think about. What that would mean to the people in that town to have that thing. In front of the memorial. Right. It's crazy. It's crazy that he did that.
Okay. He's a he is he what movie is he in that there's a man. So which one? Why last year Superman the Superman David Quarance at Superman. Okay. That was the one. The first DC you. DC you. Is that the one that Alicia did the the hope punk thing out like she took some music. Yes. That was that's for a whole punk. Okay. I bounce out of the movie I think somewhere I don't know somewhere it's very beginning. I just I just didn't you know Superman has never been my Superman and Batman just were never my jam. So it's whatever. What can I say? Is this the same actor? Yes. Nathan. I love the continuity and same uniform the whole thing like it's everything is the same. This is this is the connective tissue of the show. The same that we are happening the same universe is that you are now witnessing across
different shows and movies actually. And what works is that I didn't finish that movie. I have no connection to it. And yet I don't feel like I missed out on anything. I they played this straight and they played this just played it through. It's like, Oh, okay, that's that's guy Gardner. Yeah. Right. And whether I knew about the movies or not, it doesn't matter. And I think that's very smart. Like you don't have to you don't have to see all of these other things to understand what's going on in this. And I think that's a very smart play for this kind of show. To not turn fans off by this. But you like, Oh, I have to go see this. And one last thing I'll say about sheriff Kerry Kane here. Yeah. Why does he have to continually remind us that she's trying to gain the trust of these people in the town. That's a good right, right?
Because she says something about it again, like trying to keep people say, right, I got a reputation up hold. Yeah. La la la la. Yeah. She's an outsider. But how long though? Mm hmm. How long is she an outsider? For how long? Yeah. When do you when do you cross that threshold? But we keep keep saying it. Hmm. Why? And she, you know, the earlier she kept saying, Oh, it's not that kind of relationship. My like my my my union with Billy. It's not like that. What does that mean? Right. So yeah, there's some there's some missing pieces for sheriff Kerry here. And how can she hack so well? She was like cracking into NSA databases and stuff tracking satellite, don't her ships. That's some pretty high like not your average Midwestern sheriff has that kind of skill set. Right. And she didn't even like, how did she become sheriff? Like that that she went from.
Don't make sense. It, you know, going from the the offspring of somebody who was a criminal and was killed by sort of a mob style, you know, thing. But I think he was it was in prison and they took him out because they didn't want him to sing. So it kind of makes sense. You swing towards law enforcement. It makes sense. But like she's really dead. I'm sure it's only put her in that position. She couldn't have had that position without Zoe's backing. I'm sure Zoe put her in that position. Yeah. The question is why? And do you buy that she's trying to keep John safe by locking him up because the absolutely nice. So he should have given him his car keys and told him to go home. But then what's the purpose of keeping him in jail? That's my point. That's my point. I'm going to slow him down slow down investigation. I'm trying to keep you safe. Just let me go home if you want me. If you want me to be safe. Nobody from Rushville is coming to Midway City looking for me.
Right. I did like the graffiti on the beacon though. So I mean, a little fallace and all that stuff on there. It was pretty funny. All right. Let's move along. Gardener arrives in a rush bell and wakes up John who then subtly baits him into getting the ring from Oa. Gardener tells John that Sinestro got sprung. Gotta let's hear. Let's listen to this audio clip real quick. I asked him because it was a classy thing to do. If you had any wisdom to important, you know, he said to me. No, it is. Go climb a rope. Because you're a gym teacher. No, because he's a shit fuck and I was an athletic director. Sorry. Well, guy athletic director. That shit fuck is dead. The show is the right. It's so funny. Athletic director.
So good. I like how John also drops the hammer on Gardener here. And just straight up says, everything you have was mine. And the only reason you have it is because I didn't take it. And that really does. I think does a number on Gardener said that's why he goes to Owen. I think it's the ring. Like there's something there that he guy is self reflective enough. If he was really completely like, I don't care about you. And you say what you want to ever say. I'm not going to respond to it. But there's something about that that gets you an under guy's skin. And he's very sensitive to what people think about him. So I just really liked that. The way that John pressed him like that. I got another clip here too, but the funeral quick. We're going to have a funeral tomorrow afternoon.
Jordan should be buried in his uniform and rain. That's not a thing. What's not a thing guy? It's the whole uniform brain thing. That's military shit. I just don't do that. He's the first lantern from Earth. We can do whatever the fuck we want. They forged you a new ring. Right? That means Jordan's is the commission. Yeah. And the guardians got that shit locked away on. Oh, I can't fly in there and grab a green. Oh, why didn't you just say you little nervous? You're going to get in trouble. It's okay. Fuck you. Motherfucker. You owe me. He just plays him so perfectly. And you owe me. And then he puts the hammer on him. It's so good. Anything else? I've also there's a whoosh sound here when he flies away. And I'm going to play. I was able to line up the clips of the three whoosh sounds. The three times we hear it. So we'll listen to that tomorrow and we do the feedback episode.
So when he's talking to to John and talking about the ring and what how imparted and all this whole thing, right? But then Guy taps the ring on the cell twice. Cause I had to go today and get the whoosh sound or whatever. And I was watching that scene and he taps it. And times and I was like, you know, is there is that a subtle like dual? I don't think guy knows that. I don't think he knows that the trick. I think it why? Why? Because you don't think how told them of what? How would never tell him that kind of stuff? And I think I don't know. I tap my ring on stuff all the time. I kind of clickety clack things here and there. And like if I'm my wedding ring and I'm out in the way he did it
deliberately twice. They showed us twice twice. So I don't know. I don't know what that was. Maybe it was. Yeah, but they're so good at laying these little bits and pieces. Like the watch with John giving it to the little girl. Like you're like, oh, well, that's what was that? Oh, it comes back later. So I don't know because John asked him to go get the ring in the uniform after the tap. Do you know? Do you think that's what triggered John's memory? He was like, Oh, can I get him to do this? Maybe I have to look at that scene to see in the sequencing of that. I think it's after the tap. Okay. Okay, that's interesting. Well, we'll see with anything because I don't think guy. I don't think how would ever tell guy that.
I just don't I just don't see him giving in that kind of insider information. Okay. And it's a different ring. So is that going to work on his on guy's ring? Because that's a different ring. It's a it's a different ring. Yes, it may not. I mean, how's. Yeah, I think how's ring was house ring. Yeah, maybe it may be happenstance. It may be, you know, something to jar John Jr's memory, but I just found it like, Oh, okay. Okay. Yeah, no, it definitely triggered me though. Yeah, I was I was with I'm with you on that. All right. As John leaves the jail, he checks his messages. He speaks with his brother Aaron to pick up their father back at house. He has coffee with Maggie who is keen on watches. And then they're interrupted by Noah who's bringing John a slightly ill fitting suit. To where to the light. And we're in a speed.
I was not that it was not a well fitting suit at all. Not when we just saw him in that gray turtle neck. Earlier, my man was looking good. I was like, Oh, that's a fit. And the knee gets into that that suit. No. But it's father suit. Basically, yeah. I'm sure he did the measurements. I checked the measurements. But how do you know my measurements, bro? Right. How do you know John Jr's measurements? What is going on with this Noah kid? What's happening here? And then somebody drives by and they're like trying to get Noah to say like who's he's going to pick because he's this town star. Right. There's a lot of pride and reputation. From rush Phil, that's invested into this kid because he can throw. Of course, John is part of Noah's journey. In terms of giving him that little piece of advice to help him, you know, yeah, that's I mean, you know, Noah put in the work.
But John did give him that one tiny little piece of advice way back when that, you know, has a part of his journey, has a part of it journey. But yeah, little towns like this. It's a big deal when when somebody gets a big ride and is looking like they're going to be a big star. So I was interested that Maggie uses the word reparations. She's a racist because in our because in a and we're not a political podcast, we're an entertainment podcast. But that is a word that elicits a lot of strong reactions and emotions. If you bring it up in a modern political context. And so it's interesting that the writers chose that word. It wasn't like you owe me or that's whatever this reparations in the amount of 314,536 dollars and 27 cents. And I'm sure.
That's high. It is fine. 314. Damn it. Somebody was saying something on the discord. Who was it the other day? It was a phenomenon. I think it was phenomenon was like, oh, I went that dollar amount itemized. So specific and then Zatoichi said it's the first few digits of pie. I think. Okay. I did. Yes. 314. Yep. 159. Yeah. 159. So it's a little it's a little this off after the 314. But yeah. 314. 5. Yeah. Were you in here? Okay. Well, like is that the writers just being tricky or is that something specific to something? I don't know. Yeah. That I don't know. Okay. Right. And then his brother Aaron.
He and his brother Aaron chosen like he keeps calling you know, he keeps, they keep both poking at him. Marcus says it. With a less of a sting to it, but Aaron was definitely putting some spin on it. And then how has to bite his tongue a little bit because he starts off to say the N word to call him his brother that and I was like, oh, that's like again, from a writing standpoint, the writers are this is a very grounded. Like this is this seems very real to me. I'm telling you something as a black man. Yes. That shit happens every day. Right. I can't phone with friends. Yeah. Right. Hey, yo, please. Right. But there's a word that comes up before that please. I'm just letting you know these are the facts. So it was very true to like I felt
like wow, they get it. Yeah. They get it and they're using it and they're using it in ways that are not, you know, it's just I don't know. It's just so well done and interwoven into the concept of the show that when you see it and you say they get it, it's like, why can't more people get it? Mm hmm. What can we just have more shows where the writing is just sort of real like we don't have to dance around it or lean into it like this is just a very re yet. It just it's refreshing because it's so normal. I don't know is that like a good thing or a bad thing? I don't know. I don't know how to how to how to parse this. It's just like, oh, thank God these writers are smart and and playing this the way that they're playing it because it shows us that
it can be done. You don't have to be weird about it. You don't have to get all in like weird one way or the other about it. You can just these are the stories. This is how people talk. Lay it out that way. And I think it's just not gratuitous. It's just not. No, you know, that's how you know, right, you know, saying, throwing out words because he feels like it's edgy and cool and catch a to do that. No, you don't, bro. That's number one. You know, what may have seen edgy and cool when you were 19 because you didn't know any better, you know, as a middle age senior citizen type of person, you know, is now is, you know, like crazy, you know, to still be pulling on that same, you know, thread. Right. And this is not that. No, this is just very again grounded and I can even the way that he bit
the word off in the middle of his frustration because he tried to not lose his cool. Yes, that felt very, you know, I wouldn't call my brother that obviously I don't have the context for that, but there have been times with, you know, family members where I've had to like, you know, you want to say something and you know, it's not going to add to the situation. You know, it's actually going to push the situation in a bad direction. And you're like, good. So I think this was written by nothing. It was Justin Brick Gibson. Oh, he wrote. Yeah. That's what I think to me. Yeah. And along with Lindorff, I believe as well. Okay. Contributed to this, to this script for this episode. So just, just really well done. All right. I think this is our final scene. Gardener brings Hal's ring for the funeral.
He, John then speaks with Marcus. Oh, right. So then we have the few wait. Oh, I get my notes are out of the way. Oh, you know what I missed a scene in this. Anyway, we got the funeral and no, here it is. He speaks with Marcus and then Carol Ferris. Sorry. Who asked John to read the U.L. is he written by Hal himself? John attempts to close the later. John attempts to close the deal by phone, but the Colonel is an interested. And John junior digs up Hal's body, gets the ring and activates the hologram. Can you tell us a little bit about Carol Ferris? Yeah. So, drawing history in the Green Lantern comics, she is Hal Jordan's main, I would say, love interest in the comics. She owns Ferris Industries where Hal Jordan was a pilot. They have on and off relationship, you know, in the comics for many, many years.
And at one point, she also obtains the power of one of the spectrums, love. And she becomes a holder of a ring as well. I think it's the violet ring if I remember. Okay. And so it was not, uh, it was very much for people who know, yeah, I will say that. Right. You know, like if you didn't know, if you didn't know the name drop, it was just like, who is this person? But if you knew the name drop, you're like, Oh shit, like me. I was at home. Shit. It's so cool to incorporate that history into this show because they didn't. And for those, and for those who don't know, like me, I was like, Oh, well, obviously this is a person who had a relationship with Hal. And she's working this executive, executive or sort of fashion for his estate, his will, whatever. So it made sense. Again, you know, that double layer situation they did.
Also, a gardener says that if he got in trouble with the guardians, he'd be on the first beam to the phantom zone. Hmm. What is the, what's a beam and what's the phantom zone? That's where the Kryptonians sent their criminals. Okay. So that is a direct call to Superman and the Superman lore. From the movie that we had just from Superman period, period in general. Okay. Got it. Right. Do you remember this first Superman, the Christopher Reeves Superman movie? Yeah. We're died. Mm hmm. Yeah. And the great copy of this mirror universe. Yeah. Yeah. That's the phantom zone. Okay. What they broke out of God and okay, cool. Okay. That makes sense. And what's a beam like I know they just stick you in a like a by frost thing. Yeah, basically.
Okay. Basically. Yeah. You sort of beam you there. Do you got it? Okay. Cool. Um, of course, how I wrote his own eulogy, which when there's only three people there. I know. It really is so much more. Yeah. Matt. He really wanted so much more. He wanted so much more. But then he said he drops that line, which you referenced earlier, which is. Yes. Yes. Can you do you remember it? It was like a long time ago now that I remember it was. Oh, though. I hope I made me or something. Yeah. It was maybe it was easier to fly, man to stay on the ground. I hope I mattered. And that was the end of the eulogy. That was cool. That was his final words. Those were his final words. And that really, you know, that's somehow. You know, that's how when you have Carol saying to John junior, you know, he must
have really liked you. And I bet he never told you. Yeah. Yeah. We talked about that earlier. Yeah. How, yeah, the impact of that. But then you, you, you hear him in his own words. Say that, you know, it was easier for me to be up in the skies. Hmm. You know, then to make connections with people. And then he just hopes that in the end that people cared that he cared. You know, it's an interesting contrast with John Stewart. Then because John Stewart has this John Stewart in this television show. Has this life of preparation borderline child abuse, right? Like I think we could get a ball of green on the craziness of this family. But you know, he excels and he, he's worthy of the ring. He chooses not to take the ring. He goes on then to have another life as an architect builds, obviously, a successful practice.
And seems quite wealthy. I'm sure he'd be more than able to pay the reparations of $314,000. Johnny Payneau Dan reparations. No, I'm not saying he is. I'm just saying he could. He's saying could. He's got the cash. He could, he's that's like, that's easy for him. America has the cash. Still no reparations. Johnny Payneau reparations. If John pays reparations, nobody's saying that. Nobody's saying that. I'm just saying, right. He's, he's liquid like that though. Yes. Yes. So, um, now you got me out of my point. What was that? The idea that, oh, yeah, he's lived this other life. And so when I assume in the course of things, he eventually becomes the Greenland turn.
He will have lived this full and complex life of complex family relationships having to be cliche loved and lost, right? To have friends, to have goals and aspirations that are, I'm not using the word mundane in the sense of small, just mundane in that, that they're, that what we all have. We all want to build the lives for ourselves to find self expression, to find fulfillment in the work that we choose, you know, whatever work that we end up doing, to find meaning and connection in that. Whereas how went from sort of crazy test pilots to the Greenland turn? Part of his life, he didn't get to have a fullness of it. And then it was always within the bubble of the Greenland turn, which is the more people get close to power, the more that their lives are in danger.
The more dangerous it is for somebody to love me. And I'm guessing Carol had the wherewithal. Obviously, she became some sort of ring bear in the future. She's an extraordinary person in that. So she could withstand the, and understand the pressures of, of what that role of being a Greenland turn means. And then you're the only Greenland turn on earth. So there's no role models. There's nobody else you can hang out with. There's no other human beings that you could talk nuances with. All the other Greenland turns are, are various aliens of some kind. So they're, they're responses to things are going to be very different. So you know, define somebody that you could actually really connect with. So it's kind of telling that how it's interesting that how's alone. But then I think he's also speaking to John from the grave in some way. Why? Because John wants to matter as well. Not in the sense of an ego like I need, you know, but I want to make a
difference in people's lives. Why is he building the arcs? He wants to make a difference in the lives of other people. And it's, it's some level. He and Hal are connected. There is a vitality in their relationship, no matter how abusive it is on the surface. There's something that binds them both. Hmm. And I think some of the words of his eulogy were not intended for John, but that John was there to not only read them, right. But to hear them. Right. And I think from here on, like John's going to double down. Hmm. You know, because then, then Marcus is, you know, I already played the clip. I can play it again really quick since we're sort of you and I, at least you and I are so far from when I played. I, I, I, what about we?
Or is that what you're just saying to pitch to make good for everything you got and I didn't? Hey, man, listen. Please, I'm going to come home. You never came home. You've been stuck in Rushville for 10 years and you ain't leaving until you finished whatever the hell it is. You and Hal motherfucking Jordan started out there. I just pray it don't kill you like it killed him. Marcus speaking some truth to power there. You never came home. You've turned the ring down, but you're in your heart. You never let it go. Not even you turned it down, but you got to finish whatever you started. Hmm. Because turning it down didn't finish it. Right. Okay, turning it down didn't finish it because it's about more than just a ring. It's about you, it's about how Jordan's about Bernadette. It's more than just a ring. Yeah. Yeah. Like you're still embroiled in this story and you can't really start your
next chapter until you close this one. And his next chapter is actually becoming the Green Lantern. That's because I think what that this this we've talked about this before about what this television show is about is John's origin story. Origin story. Yeah. Yeah. And hopefully we'll get some more Aaron Pierre is the Green Lantern and yeah, your shows. Well, they're already talking about a movie. So okay, I'm there. Whatever, you know, I'll put put Aaron Pierre on a screen and I will watch it. That's that's all I'm saying. That is all I am saying. You got anything else for us? No, I'm you know, yeah, this this was just a really good episode of deviling into these characters and just such a great way to move the story forward. You know,
because last week we left it off in episode five, 2016, that could have been a cliffhanger of an episode for a season two. Yeah, you know, and that they are now pushing the story forward in this way was really, really well done. So yeah. So you and I are going to reconnect tomorrow. Mm hmm. We're going to go over the feedback. I'm going to try and get this podcast out ASAP. So that's going to be a short under for folks to get any additional feedback in if they want, but you got a window. You definitely have a window because I'm going to have this out in a little bit. So if you listen to this tonight and you got some time tomorrow, send us a quick email, comics versus at the lorehounds.com. Sometimes people are sending us some stuff on Spotify or through the Patreon. I know definitely one use there's one user who's using the the Patreon message a bunch because something's wrong with it.
Whatever, it doesn't matter. You can get us to that way. I'm not really scanning the discord for that. We usually have Nancy helps with that because it's hard to pull messages sometimes out. Right. Right. But there is a lot of good chatter going down. Marilyn is catching up on the. Yes, you know, lorehounds and she's having amazing. Some comments. I'm glad that she's enjoying the show. And so yeah, the discord is a great place to have conversations. What else do we got going on? You and Alicia are getting ready for your vision. Yeah, not for vision quest. Yes. October 14th, the first episode drops. So okay. Yeah. Do we have a pod in your ear drums? Really soon after that. So right. And then we're going to probably going to do weekly coverage on that. Sweet. Yeah. And I think I'm so glad that Marvel's. Oh, you know, has green lit that end. And we actually get a conclusion to that three part story. Like that is.
Yeah. That is significant. That's like kind of a really important thing because you all the way that they're playing silly buggers with follow up seasons is like really. I'm really surprised that they cut the cut the check for that one. So. But I'm that makes me happy. I'm very excited for it. We're also going to be doing the clay face movie. What's the key point? I don't know what clay face is a Batman villain. Okay. Get in his own. Don't at me. Don't at me. I'm not a DC person. I just I just have it's not it's not a it's not a condemnation of DC. It was just never my thing. That's the start Galaxia and Star Wars. It's the 23rd and it's it's horror. So fits in. Okay. How to go. So we'll be covering that Alicia and I as well. Okay. Cool. And I know Alicia is working on getting the last of the silo coverage done. She's been hammering tongs at that. Stay listening to wool shift dust. Especially if you're catching up on the season season.
I'm finally it's like, oh, okay. So episode four episode five. Like, oh, no, I'm interested. And she's got a big. Yeah, there's there's a big episode coming in the pipeline. I was while her her her surprise, but it's going to be it's a very cool. I was very excited for her when I came through. Nicole and Mark just started their season three series of never mind. The music and they have Britney Spears. I think I talked about this at the beginning of the podcast too. Rings and rituals is back episode two just dropped. And now we're going to be on a weekly cycle with them until we start rings until rings of power starts in November. And then we're going to be doing episode to episode coverage for that. Even though it's a weird release schedule. We're definitely going to have coverage on that. We got a bunch of other things bubbling here and there. So definitely stay tuned. Make sure to hit up the link tree link in the show notes because that will take you to all the affiliates. Take you to the discord subscription options, all that kind of stuff.
I won't go into the whole. Please support us with your subscriptions. I mean, if you want to, you know how to find this, you know, where to to hit us up. Otherwise, let's give a quick shout out to our community volunteers. Nancy, hand of the pod. Peter Oh, H captain of the Polherum. Oh, I should say really quick. We just did our Catherine O'Hara into the West podcast. That's where we're going to. Yeah, that's on it. I saw that. Yeah, where we memorialize it. We have this whole other podcast where we just talk about people who've passed and we sort of do. We either do these little short form things or we do these double episodes where we review their life and history and and their filmography and pick some films. And then we do a vote. And then you get to pick a movie that we then watch and then we do a, like a full on regular breakdown. And so that poll is live. If you go to that episode, there's a link directly in the show notes. So you don't have to go to a link to a link to get to it. It's right there. Or if you're on the discord, you can find the link as well because I posted it in the
into the West thing. So that will be fun. So yeah, that's why I was saying I was thinking Peter Oh, H because he, he does all that poll. He sets up all those polls and stuff for us sub zero who keeps the show tracker fresh and full of good content for us. If you haven't checked out the show tracker, definitely do that. It is a curated list of movies and television shows and a notion database. It's accessible through the website. It's just a really great way to see what's coming up and especially at the end of the year when we do our end of the year review things. It's a great way to see like what was out there. We have a blog, Lorbury and Brighton 80 63 keeps that in does all the editorial work for that and gets things published. And then of course our discord moderators Brian 80 63 Aaron K. We have discord server boosters Aaron K tiller the thriller do 71 Athena Angelay a list to Nancy M goes to partition radioactive Richard and Andre on. They all throw a little something extra.
So our discord has like player and a permalink and all kinds of other good stuff. You know and it was great about the lore house communities like it's a whole bunch of people doing stuff for the community. They're not doing it for me. They're not doing it for you. They're doing it for the community. No, no. I was like, I like I paused the recording and I said, I said, what are you doing tomorrow? Like you, John was just like, Oh, okay. Yeah, we're done. Yeah, he he read the signs. He knew exactly. It was like it's a wrap. It's a wrap. It's a wrap. Let's roll out. I didn't it's no fun when you're out of gas to try to podcast because then you're scraping the barrel and it does. It just comes off weird and you save me stuff and people at you and yeah, it's funky. So I appreciate everyone's patience as we dealt with our technical issues yesterday and we got podcasts out today and we'll we'll be back in your feeds after that
with some feedback and hopefully some more cool conversation for the school show. All right. Peace out. Thank you for listening to the lore hounds.
