1:04Hello chickens, this is the fabulous Edamard Chin and I have a theory. Hello chickens. We are in week five, episode five of lanterns and it feels like if you've just watched the episode, it's finished. But there are more episodes to come. There is a next time trailer if you scroll all the way to the end plus like a making of bit of business, which I didn't watch because he's got time. To talk about lanterns and to find out that all of his theory so far have come completely true, it's Justin Hamilton. You know, it really did feel like episode five of True Detective. Like, you know, they keep making this correlation before it even came out and you know, that that's a first season in particular.

2:04I think the third season as well did the same kind of rhythm and it's like, well, that's the end of the story in the past and now we are going to fast forward to the future. I have to say I was not expecting to get that storyline at the beginning with the share of on the run. Sounds like she doesn't necessarily come from a law-abiding background. No, but you know, we've seen many police shows where they don't come from a law-abiding background and continue to not be law-abiding despite being in law enforcement. Well, she seems like she's been doing the right thing though. Yeah, although, you know, given what the man hunter is meant to do, and I've got to say there were a few little leaps in this that I was like, I'm glad no one had a go and said, oh, can you insert an entire episode to explain this please? Because we see, I'm going to jump straight in, we see one of the most gruesome scenes ever of Garrett Dilla Hunt's heart being ripped out.

3:11And it's like, what is that about? That is a lot and then it's like, human. And then John Stuart does the exact same thing. And we've never had the scene where someone says, oh, you've got to cut their heart out. It's like this great big way. Oh, they mentioned in one of the previous episodes. The man hunters can mimic everything until you see the heart. But it's, yeah, it was not like, you know, you need to dig in and chop the thing out. So, yeah, that was a really interesting kind of like, oh, also things that are just said, you know, in passing, a very different to, please have a whole scene. Explaining in detail what has to happen, which is often the case. It's like, you have to do this and then you have to do that. And then you have to do the other thing. Like having it just like mentioned is great

4:11because it means when it happens, you go, oh, what is that Christmas? And I kind of did love it. It does however ruin one of your theories, however, Justin. Which one was that? That the hell Jordan that's dead in the future is the man hunter. Yes. Although you did say shapeshifter maybe. So maybe you didn't mean the man hunter, but I did think because we've seen a few shapeshifters, that's what I figured. I also, what's, so something that kind of feeds into like a version of that theory is, what did he do when he took something off the ring? Because I've only had an opportunity to watch at once. But he got a knife and he got the ring and he did something with it. And that's what brought up the version of how that had originally spoken to John Schubert. So did he do something by clicking that, that guy is now

5:13running around as well. So maybe it'll be, it'll be him in the future. Yeah. The decoy hell Jordan. Yeah. Which would be devastating because I love Deco Jordan. Yeah, the hologram. I love hologram. He's a hologram. He's great. He's happier. He's more relaxed. Yeah, he's 10 years old. Like he's still young and unjaded. And not as great. Yeah. So I love that they wear the same jacket, but then like the modern one is so faded. Yes. But the other one is like a brand new jacket that's still dark and brown instead of his faded mustardy looking one. Yeah, it's a nice, it's a nice little touch that that gives you a sense of that passing of time. But the, yeah. So yeah, so I kind of seeing, because I, because I clocked that immediately and I was like, what is it like he'd taken the safety catch off or something like that? And so now it made me think the hologram in the future is what has been shot.

6:18Yeah, that would be great. Although I am terrified that the appearance of what looks like Guy Gardner in the next episode is because the ring has gone out sought out and found Guy Gardner as a replacement for Dead Hell Jordan and John Stuart misses out entirely. Well, I'm wondering if I kind of got the impression like this rejection of the ring maybe it maybe it goes straight to Guy Gardner. Yeah. So how's been off doing his own thing? And Guy has been the pain in the ass green lantern all this time. So maybe I have to say I didn't see that coming with John and I thought it was a really good character beat. Yeah, also the fact that he kills the man Hunter and it feels perfectly within his character to accept that help and still turn on her to go, yep, I'm going to, I'm going to kill

7:19you because they're my orders basically to basically protect the earth. It was, it was a great moment where we saw all the, all the things leading up to him taking that action, but we didn't realize that's what was going to happen until we see him up there on the, yeah, with the sniper rifle. Pretty much until how sort of says, hey, if there's anything I know about that guy, you know, he's, he'd do it himself. And obviously, you know, you're being used as bait. I wonder if the moment that he decides that he's going to take her out is when she confesses that even though happens to, ostensibly protected her, it is in the nature and she will do anything and she's, she's blowing up that town and I'm guessing to make Hal Jordan, you know, the battery down. Yeah, yeah, that's what she said. Like, I'm going to run his ring down, then I'm going to kill him.

8:20Yeah, so, you know, like for someone who profess to caring about the town, et cetera, in the end, she is, she is what she is. Yeah, yeah, which is, and, and that moment between Paul Benvickter and Garrett Dillahunt, where he thinks it's the manhunter. And obviously, he'd been in a relationship with her. He had been that character that had kind of let her take over the entire world and kill everyone, as is, I guess, that, that the manhunter's, you know, been built for. But yeah, it was, it was interesting because it's like, you go, well, was she going to eventually destroy the whole world? Or, I guess she must have, and I love, I have to say, I loved that speech about being an outsider is the best way to find out what a society is like, which is how do you get

9:24treated if you're an outsider. And that was really kind of affecting, because, you know, here she is talking to someone who also feels like an outsider. And especially after that moment of, am I going to come out one? Yeah, yeah, what a funny line. If I was, if I was John Stuart, that would be the first question I'd make sure was going to happen. But yeah, there were two, that, that whole speech, I'm not saying these are similar, but they had echoes in, for me, in two of Nolan's recent films. One is the Odysseus returning as a beggar, because you can get more of an idea of a man from below. Yeah. And also it had echoes in, when the protagonist and Neil break into that place to speak to the arm's dealer and it's the woman who's been hiding in plain sight, because it's easier

10:25in a man's world. So, I think those three things are kind of cousins of each other. Yeah. Yeah, I particularly enjoyed that as well. Like, it kind of, it meant a lot of people could probably dismissing her while she was the one with all the power. Yeah. And immediately from the beginning we meet her and we're like, oh, she's naughty. She's, you know, cheating on her husband and she's looking up with Green Lantern or Green Lantern in training. And it's all fun and, you know, she's, well, whatever. And then she turns out to be, as you guessed very early on, the main person that we're looking for, I did love that we got lots of Lantern in this episode. Yes. We got some shields. We got some bubbles. We got a well, well, we're, oh, I love this. It was great. It was great. Tornado for explosion. Yeah, right. Great. And, you know, the great big dark cloud, which I love that we got the dark cloud. And the last episode and now we're like, oh, we're weaponizing the dark cloud.

11:28It's a, it's a, it's a fun, exciting bit of space weaponry. We had one blast from the sky and now we've got hundreds of them. It's, I really enjoyed it. And I love that we tied up a storyline. Because sometimes you get to the end of a first series of something, episode eight or ten. And you're like, you've barely gotten through one storyline. You've gone, done one character's arc. And now everything else has left open. And this is like, no, no, no, man, Hunter's done. This town's pretty much done. Although now we've got the new mystery that we got an episode one. And also how much more is Kelly McDonald implicated in whatever's going on. Like what is her further? Yeah, if hell came back for her, why is that? Yes. Yes. Well, you know, I wonder if there's something going on with the grandson. Yeah. You know, is there some sort of succession plan or something?

12:29You know, because otherwise, why would you bring him back? You know, like, she's kind of teaching him, isn't she? Why? You're sort of saying, you know, she kind of encourages him to eavesdrop. And what were you? So what did you learn? So was, you know, there was that speech that the man hunters were wiped out by the guardians. And for some reason, she stayed alive. So maybe this was, maybe she was using that town to build more. Yeah, maybe. Yeah. And also the fact was that she kept saying, you know, she appears altruistic, but everything she does, immediate, it's like, now what are you going to do for me next? Yeah. So, you know, she's not as a space-godfather. She's the space-godfather. She is. She is. I'll call on you for a favour one day. By the way, I have to say Carl Chandler, who is already one of my favourite actors, just

13:33the moment when he sort of says, yeah, yeah, the man hunter compromised John and the man Hunters make it. And he's like, oh, that's strange, because normally they take a female role and, and, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, quite us. And, yeah, normally, normally they go for the alpha and then it's like, then he goes, oh, well, you know, we had a bit quite us as well. And then, and then it just that, just that's for anyone who's read the Greenlands and comics, it like you do get the impression that Hal Jordan has banged anything he finds in the cosmos. And I did enjoy that kind of reference. The, any holes a goal attitude of Hal Jordan was very much on display. It's been a while when he's like, mate, when you've been had into Galactic Six, gender doesn't really meet that much. Yeah. Anyway, all of the acting on, on his face as he's trying to think his way through his plans

14:36and try to work out how he's going to do it. Everything his plan was to send them to fight Makenslots so then he could bring out the manhunter. And it's interesting as well because the sheriff says, you know, if you leave everything will be fine, which is not 100% true, but it's also not 100% incorrect because that tale does get wiped out. Yeah. I mean, this is the thing. It's like we're dealing with an existential threat that we've seen no evidence of, which is manhunter's destroying the world. But then, you know, when this guy turns up and he's like, you know, we're the last of our kind, everyone else is destroyed. You're like, oh, well, that is obviously a thing that happens. And you kind of want to go, well, yeah, but we haven't seen it with our own eyes. But then she starts blowing up the town to draw out Hal Jordan and exhaust his battery and you're like, yeah, no, we're saying it now.

15:38Yeah. We'll just do whatever needs to be done. Yeah, it's, I do wonder about the, I think maybe you're onto something with the kid because there was that discussion where he asks about what were the names of our children and makenslots like, oh, we never procreated. We couldn't. And it's like, oh, is that like, you know, there's that whole adage of writing. Don't reveal anything if it's not integral to the plot. Yeah. And why have that conversation like what is that particular diet bit of dialogue about unless there is more manhuntering going on? Is there a possibility because, you know, earth is considered a backwater in this version of the DCU. How Jordan's the first earth person to be a Green Lantern? And maybe she tried to procreate with old kaboom and that didn't work. And then maybe she tried to procreate with abinsur and that didn't work.

16:41And maybe Maiken was the first person that, you know, maybe there's something about humans that they can kind of, you know, procreate and, you know, start the lineage again. Like, you know, there's still a lot to be explained like that abattoir is way too spacey. There's just way too way too. I abattoir, you know what I mean? Abattoir 3.0. Yeah. So, you know, there's still, there's still a lot of meat on the bone, but also just as just as I'm sorry to say about an abattoir. I guess. Yes. Coming from a vegetarian, this is a very odd metaphor. It's a, it's it's it's fine as a metaphor. It's only been a, it ends up in front of me that I don't go. But yeah, there's still it's interesting. It feels like it put it put to end a lot of storylines and, yeah, you know what? Like John Stuart rejecting the ring while his parents are fucking got him on speakerphone

17:46and harassing him and always trying to get shit done. Like this is the first time that he's had an opportunity to really actually make a choice for himself. Yeah, because it's it's almost like, ah, I've done one of, and because he's gone straight from his controlling parents to the military and now the guardians and he's finally questioning all of that authority, his questioning authority going back, you know, all of his entire life and, and I think that is because of how like he's meant to do what held teaches him. He's meant to respect how and how is just not being that person. He's not being that authority figure. He's bucking at it. He's, he's being egocentric. He's being, you know, very capricious. He's not, he's not being who John has been following orders from all this time. So it's, it's almost like that.

18:47That has given him the opportunity to look at who he is and what he does. Like it's a really, it's kind of a really clever use of character building to go this guy that you don't have anything in common with. This whole oil and water situation is exactly what you needed to not do what you told. Yeah. Well, you know, also in the course of five episodes, we've had three lessons from it. One is his dad shits the bed, his, his wife is furious about it. And they make him go through everything because of their unfulfilled ambitions and dreams. Right. So secondly, he joins the army. They send him off. He says, I'll get in touch when I finish the job. Nine months later, he's Jeremiah Johnson with one of the greatest bids you've ever seen. And just as he's about to go to work, how Jordan comes in, fucks up everything. And then when he goes back, he gets in trouble because, you know, he was just fulfilling his job and he has to take,

19:48you know, an honorary full, yeah, full for it. And then three, if, if the guardians were just being upfront about things, that town doesn't get blown up because, you know, that, you know, you could have had a much more honest conversation about John Stuart being a backup. Maybe how Jordan takes an on board. And then they're not saying we're not replacing you. And then they both report that there's a man hunter there. Yeah. And do you know what I mean? So we're seeing three lots of authority, family, you know, governmental and space cop who have all led him down. So when he leaves the ring there, it's a, it's a really bizarre moment of triumph that I didn't see coming. Yeah. I thought the needle drop was a bit on the nose. Oh, rings within rings within rings. Yeah. I, you know what? I was a bit, I heard that lyric and you know what I did?

20:51Tune it out. Yeah. That's a, that was, that was the misstep for me in that episode. I was like, no, I get up. Absolutely. Yeah. It's like it don't, yeah, we've understood everything up to this point. You don't need to rub our noses in the soundtrack. I play, you know, you know, what would have been better? Play a ring of fire. Give us that. They're probably saving that for the last episode. That's my next theory. That would be the last song for the last episode as the credits are rolling. A burning ring of fire. I've always known as too much pepperoni on your pizza. Um, not you, because you're vegetarian. Yes. You're, but I did have food poisoning recently off of glass noodles and, uh, and leaves and, um, yeah. Too much chili. No, no, it was absolutely food poisoning. And it was, um, it was an exciting moment to have cheekbones for 24 hours until I finally had a glass of water and they have disappeared and be dearly back to the hamster.

21:53Back to the hamster. It is, it, food poisoning is no fun for anyone. Um, so before we kind of wrap up, I want to know what are your thoughts about why how has come back for Kelly McDonald's character? Like what is it, is it to do with her shady past or because he looked her up and she was on the police force. Remember? Yeah. Yeah. Like was that a, was that an implanted thing or is that again, how bullshitting to maintain her cover with, with John? I'd like again, everyone's, everyone's bullshitting to everyone. This should be called green bullshitters. Um, yeah. Bullshit lanterns because everyone is lying in this show. Everyone is lying about everything. So I don't know how to feel about what, what we know about anything at this point because it all feels like it's up for grabs. But, uh, yeah, why does she say he came back for me in the trailer?

22:58Yeah. And I wonder if, uh, you know, she obviously, I think we'll go looking for him after he's been left in that motel. Yes. Uh, nice use of the, oh, of the motel looking like, that was a nice little move. See, that's how you do, subtle, do you know, rings with their rings? Just do it that way. Yeah. Um, but, uh, I wonder, yeah, my, you know, we kind of discussed it, but my guess is, I think there's something going on with that kid. Yeah. And I think, uh, things will progress and, you know, it's almost like, um, what she was doing was, um, you know, there's a possibility she knew that she wasn't going to get out of this as well. Yeah. So, you know, just make sure that the last lesson I've taught you, yeah, when I, when I go off and maybe he, he's kept an eye on things and he clocks something and he's gone back to get her out.

23:58Um, but, uh, yeah, my money is now on the, you know, we've seen, we've seen, um, things exist without the ring having to be focusing on it. Oh, and reminded of that by the bird that turns up. Yes. So I just wonder if, whatever he did with the ring, like, I, look, I don't know if I'm overthinking that part, but it just seemed a very specific thing. If he took off a safety catch of some sort or took something out, he's been in lantern for a long time. So, you know, these things. And, uh, if his, um, if his, uh, he'll a grant has been, uh, you know, out in the world all this time. Yeah, yeah, and still doing work and, you know, maybe there's a part of him who thinks if I can, uh, take down this child man, Hunter, then maybe I get reinstated as Green Lancer. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You did have that very emphatic moment, uh, where he's like, I'll, you know, I'll just get you and your, your son and we can go and she goes, I'm doing this for my son and

25:01you're like, but that would be doing something for your son. It's like, Oh, what are you doing for your son? Yeah. So it's, uh, yeah, it's, yeah, I think you're on to something, Justin. Maybe interesting to find out if you're right. You know, the, the, the great thing about these kinds of shows is I'm wrapped if I'm wrapped. I know. I'm saying, I like theorizing and a few rumours. I'm like, Oh, and if you're right, you're like, Oh, all right. So we will continue this, uh, next week with episode six of eight. I can't believe there's still three more to come. Like it feels, it feels so complete already. But even though there's a couple of dangling threads, uh, I, I feel quite satisfied with this. I'd be happy if it was just the five episodes and we went home and we didn't have this dangling, uh, saga, but I'm glad we do. I'm glad there's, there's more in the tank. I'd also be happy with another five episodes. It's like, um, it's, it's, do you know what I mean? It feels like a, um, it feels like a well-made meal. Yeah. If, if another plate comes out, excellent.

26:03And if it doesn't, I'll have a glass of water and I'll be fine. And also, I love that they, even though we had the grossness of the heart being ripped out, we didn't have the full grossness of the hand being torn off. Yeah. And we get out of the, the handcuffs, because we see it in that weird green light and it just looks like, oh, that's a cartoon. That doesn't matter. Yeah. I did love all that night vision stuff. Like it's a really well. I told you on the weekend. Yeah. I told you on the weekend that I just did a re-botshow at Silence of the L.A.S. and I was getting some, uh, some pretty cool feeling vibes of that. Yeah. Yeah. I thought it was a, uh, a visually, uh, ingenious, uh, episode overall of, uh, you know, entertainment. Yeah. It was so much fun. All right.
